Boat of the Week: The Elegant 295-Foot Superyacht Will Transport You Back to New York’s Art Deco Period

The 295-foot Phoenix 2 is a heavily stylized design by Winch Design with an art-deco interior.

The principal owner was heavily involved in the boat’s design. Though he passed away a few years after taking delivery in May 2010, the yacht has remained in the family. Phoenix 2 was his second Winch-designed yacht, but his first new build.

The former, also named Phoenix , was penned for a different owner who had requested a Parisian art-deco theme. Phoenix 2 was the boat that he wanted to build, and New York was his art-deco city of choice.

“The owner was a powerful businessman and very proud of it,” says Dixon. “He wanted Phoenix 2 to reference the boom time of 1920s New York—the art-deco architecture and that period of industrialization. It was much stronger in character than his previous yacht.”

In a subtle nod to the Big Apple, the external side decks are large enough for two people to comfortably walk abreast, and the New York skyline is outlined in polished stainless-steel on the upper deck bar stools. A more overt example of the theme is the plated stainless-steel Phoenix sculpture on the bow, which is a direct representation of the eagles on the Chrysler building.

“The owner wanted his yacht to be longer than his friend’s, so we welded and bolted on a 16-foot phoenix figurehead on the bow,” Andrew Winch told Robb Report . “It’s absolutely enormous, weighs 5.5 tons and gave the owner the extra 16 feet he was looking for.”

The interior keeps to four main colors—black, cream, gold and burgundy—with high-gloss macassar wood and gold leaf used to reflect 1920s glamor.

Adjacent is a round room with a reinforced floor where a custom black-and-gold Steinway piano sits. Designed as a one-off, it has a phoenix emblazoned on its side and took two years to build. The crew of 28 include a pianist and guitarist, as well as a massage therapist and chocolatier.

“The owner was a consummate host and Phoenix 2 was all about dining, music and entertainment,” says Winch. “He liked to think that his dinner guests became the orchestra, while he was seated at the head as the conductor.”

The yacht also has a spa, gym and hammam for relaxation. A wine cellar is stocked with the finest Italian and Bordeaux wines. The owner’s love of art is evident in the yacht’s prized collection, including a Modigliani in one of the guest suites.

The art-deco theme continues in the lower-deck cinema. On the top deck is a second outdoor cinema and a swimming pool with portholes in the floor to allow natural light to fill the staterooms below. The forward master suite is spread across two levels.

On the main deck is the bedroom, dressing room and ensuite, with another elaborate mural and a vanity table with refrigerated cosmetic drawers. A private spiral staircase leads to the owner’s deck with an observation lounge and office where a desk made from high gloss macassar and mother of pearl inlay takes pride of place.

The 295-foot Phoenix 2 is a heavily stylized design by Winch Design with an art-deco interior.

“The owner felt the panoramic views would be wasted on a master bedroom where he wouldn’t spend as much time,” says Dixon. “A private lounge gives him another level of privacy and is the room the family enjoy spending time in the most.”

One of the few changes made since the original design is an extension to the swim platform. Though the principal didn’t live to enjoy his yacht for as long as hoped, his family has cruised Europe and the Caribbean. “The yacht crosses the Atlantic every year,” Captain Ian Howcroft told Robb Report .

For sale for $134 million with yacht broker Burgess, Phoenix 2 is ready to rise from the ashes and give a modern Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan a chance to foxtrot around the high seas.

Quick Enquiry

"I once had a client who told me, “I will put your name on the side of my boat if it’s good, but if the boat is not good, your name will appear three times as big.” We were brought up with the sense that it is a very personal obligation for the family when we sign a contract to deliver a yacht that the client expects. I cannot go to a client and say “One of my guys made a mistake.” He would say “Is he Mr. Lürssen, or are you Mr. Lürssen?” But a successful delivery is also a great reward. I take the relationships of my clients very personally." - Peter Lürssen of Lürssen Yachts (courtesy SuperYachtTimes)

Billionaire Jan Kulczyk, owner of superyacht Phoenix 2, dies at age 65

Billionaire Jan Kulczyk, owner of superyacht Phoenix 2 and Poland’s richest man, has died at age 65. Jan Kulczyk died in Vienna, Austria from complications during surgery.

According Forbes magazine, he tops the list of Poland’s richest people, with his wealth estimated to be $4 billion.

Jan Kulczyk owned the 90 metre Lürssen superyacht Phoenix 2 , launched in 2010, which is designed inside and out by Andrew Winch . Phoenix 2 features an art deco inspired interior and a unique bird-shaped bowsprit. The first Lürssen superyacht  Phoenix (now re-named Aurora ), launched in 2004, was also built for Jan Kulczyk. Though the 60.97 metre  Aurora  was also designed by Andrew Winch, she features a more traditional exterior profile and white hull and superstructure, making a striking contrast to the sleek, dark-hulled Phoenix 2 .

With capital from his father, Jan Kulczyk started his first business in 1981. He grew his first car dealership into a $3.9 billon holding investment firm that it is today.

Jan Kulczyk earned much of his wealth as Poland transitioned from Communist rule to privatisation, investing in a wide array of industries, from energy and telecommunications to brewing and oil and gas. A sometimes controversial figure in the country’s ever-increasing move to privatisation, Jan Kulczyk was questioned by a parliamentary committee in 2004 regarding his involvement at Poland’s biggest refinery, PKN Orlen, as documents showed he had a larger impact than just his five per cent investment in the company.

He is also a noted philanthropist, and one of his most major charitable donations in recent years include donating $5.5 million to build the Museum of the History of Polish Jews, though Jan Kulczyk was not Jewish himself.

Jan Kulczyk is survived by his two children, Dominika and Sebastian. Jan Kulczyk’s son, Sebastian, took over as CEO of Kulczyk Investments in 2014.

It’s reported that Jan Kulczyk split his time living between Warsaw, Luxembourg, London – and travelling and spending time on board his superyacht, Phoneix 2 .

What a great boat!

A very comfortable cruiser featuring a large salon, a huge galley area, and a very large cockpit this boat is great for entertaining friends or just kicking back and watching the world go by.

Accommodation includes a large master cabin as well as a guest cabin. A couch in the salon also folds out to give a further king size bed.

Built very much like a Bertram the Phoenix boasts one of the widest beams in her class giving enhanced stability and control in all conditions as well as a classic offshore hull which rides very smoothly indeed.

The tuned 485hp Detroits really move this boat along with a 20 knot cruise making short weekend trips up the coast easily attainable.

Please call Jeff Crowter at (604) 329-6591 to book your viewing today!

Specifications

Phoenix Marine was established in 1977 where it soon earned a reputation for innovation. The founders background was with Bertram yachts and this heavily influenced their designs for the Phoenix line. Hit by recession and luxury tax the company closed in 1994, but was resurrected about 10 years ago by former Bertram CEO Carl Herndon as the Phoenix Yacht Corporation.this venture eventually was merged with Jupiter marine also run by Herndon.

The Phoenix was designed by Jim Wynne and Fred Hudson as a fast convertible sports fisherman with sleeping for six and superb fishing accommodations.  she has an 18 degree pronounced convex section deep-V with prop pockets and an 18 inch keel.

“See Ya” was originally a Florida boat brought to the Pacific Northwest in 2008 by ship transport.  The current owners purchased her in 2015, but an expanding cadre of grand kids are forcing them to a larger craft.

Accomodation

Forward is the master cabin featuring a large double island bed, with hanging lockers and storage on both sides as well as large drawer at the foot of the bed. Air conditioning and sound systems are wired in, though the current owners never used the a/c.

To starboard is the private access to the large head which features a scalloped basin and toilet, and a separate stand up shower with seating and a privacy curtain.

Opposite the head is the VIP guest cabin which feature two wide bunks, hanging locker and small vanity area.

The main salon is large and bright. Forward leads down to the cabins and features some beautiful carved woodwork and a wine rack just above the companionway. To starboard there is the music entertainment system and a very comfortable couch. Behind this are multiple storage cupboards. To port there is the food preparation area which features what must be one of the longest counter tops you will ever see on just about any boat! Below this is a freezer and a brand new fridge which has never been used. There is also a large sink and three burner stove. At the back of the cabin on this side is a small recess very nice with a glass cabinet, and the electrical panel is housed in another cabinet upon which the Toshiba TV stands to face the couch.

There are two large hatches to get access to the top of each engine and another hatch with a ladder leading down to the engine room.

  • 1 1/4″ sturdy aluminum pulpit with welded stanchions rails extend aft almost to the cockpit.
  • Convenient hand railing leading into the cockpit.
  • Fender holders
  • HD electric windlass
  • 40 lb. Danforth anchor which fits snugly into the bowsprit
  • Self tailing electric windlass with foot switched and remote control from helm
  • 190 ft. 5/16 galvanized chain
  • Two good sized foredeck cleats

“Sea Ya” is obviously a very substantially built machine as can be witnessed by the heavy grade guard rails and robust fittings throughout. The electric windlass feeds out a substantial amount of 5/16″ chain attached to a Danforth tucked neatly under the bowsprit..

Generous walkarounds lead back to the vast cockpit where there is a large freezer on one side and a fish cleaning station on the other.   In the center of the cockpit is a live bait well as well as two fish boxes on either side. There is a large hatch allowing access to the Kohler generator which has ~2390 hours on it. There are also two access hatches to the exhaust and steering systems and another giving access to the back of the twin Detroits.

The owners have used this yacht primarily as a comfortable cruiser to explore and enjoy the BC waters as opposed to fishing on it. However at its core this boat is a true blue ocean fishing machine.

Aloft is the helm which has fully enclosing canvas. From the two helm seats vision is excellent in all directions and just ahead is wide cushioned couch for guests to enjoy the ride. Around the helm are several generations of navigation equipment which are used as back up for the more modern variants.
