Cruise the Mississippi River To Experience Iowa’s Natural Masterpiece

Iowa offers unique riverboat cruising experiences on the Mississippi River with options like the Celebration Belle and Twilight Riverboat.

Written by

Iowa offers a few tempting options for riverboat cruising. Experiencing the Mississippi River from a giant cruising vessel is a completely different experience from seeing it only from the shoreline. Go for a day cruise or spend a few days on the river. Either way, cruising the Mississippi on one of these beautiful boats is a unique way to experience Iowa's natural masterpiece.

The Celebration Belle is a 750-passenger paddlewheel boat made for cruising the beautiful Mississippi River.

alt

It's the largest non-gaming riverboat currently cruising the Upper Mississippi. This giant boat offers two observation decks, two enclosed climate-controlled dining decks, a gift shop, five fully-stocked bars, two dance floors, a full galley, and is four decks tall.

It's officially spring sunset season, in Iowa.

alt

The Celebration Belle has three boarding locations in Iowa. You can hop on in LeClaire, Muscatine, or Dubuque.

During the Captain's Narrated Lunch Cruise, passengers learn about the history of the Quad Cities area while enjoying a delicious meal.

alt

The Dinner Cruise includes an amazing full meal, of course. After you dine, a fully stocked bar and live music from the Celebration River Cruises band awaits. Feel like dancing? Go for it.

Themed cruises, overnight packages, and group events are also options with Celebration River Cruises.

alt

The Mississippi River is by far one of the best displays of nature Iowa has to offer. It's one of North America's richest environmental resources and is home to about 40% of the migratory waterfowl and nearly 20% of the nations' duck population on this continent.

The Twilight Riverboat is a Mississippi Cruiser that offers one or two-day river experiences between Dubuque and LeClaire. You can even go on a short 1.5 hour cruise.

alt

The longer cruises include gourmet meals on board, historical narration, and the best up-close and personal view of the wildlife that makes the upper Mississippi River their home.

The upper Mississippi River is home to many bald eagles. They are plentiful here year round.

alt

This magnificent river is home to more than 400 species of wildlife. From the upper decks of a river-cruising boat, you'll be able to see the marshlands, islands, and palisades of the upper Mississippi River in a way that you can't from the shore, or even a small plane.

The two-day tour leaves from LeClaire and includes an overnight stop at the riverfront Grand Harbor Resort.

alt

After spending the morning enjoying the city of Dubuque and the Mississippi River Museum, you'll enjoy lunch and dinner onboard the Twilight. The boat returns to LeClaire at approximately 7:00pm.

Taking a riverboat cruise is all about relaxation.

alt

The crews of both of these gorgeous vessels are famously friendly and accommodating. Boarding one of these river cruises is the best way to see the Mississippi River and all of its wildlife.

Are you ready to go? Check out the Twilight Riverboat Mississippi Cruise website for a one or two-day cruise. The Celebration Belle website offers specifics about how to get tickets for a narrated lunch cruise, Captain's Dinner and Dance Cruise, or overnight cruise.

Here Are The Best Times And Places To View Iowa’s Fall Foliage In 2024

Discover the best spots in Iowa to witness the stunning fall foliage in 2024.

Summer has sung its last song, and fall is upon us - and that means a dazzling new display of colors on the trees. I don't know about you, but I look forward to fall all year. The cooling weather, the wonderful outdoor festivals, and the build-up to holidays like Halloween and Thanksgiving are all great - but nothing beats nature putting on its own stunning display of color, as the leaves transform into a rainbow of red, orange, and gold.

Across the Hawkeye State, the trees form a palette of beauty every year, and 2024 will be no different. So when do leaves change color in Iowa? SmokyMountains.com has us covered, with its annual Fall Foliage Map - and we have you covered with the very best spots across Iowa to see the colors in their full glory!

The Fall Foliage Prediction Map is the best way to see when the fall colors will be most spectacular in your state. For Iowa, the colors will be at their height starting in early October and continuing through the month. A bike ride through Pinicon Ridge Park is an amazing way to see the colors -- we love Pinicon Ridge Park for its hiking trails, waterfronts, and the signature bike trail which offers some amazing views of the park's fall colors.

A hike through Yellow River State Forest will take you among the trees to see them as they were meant to be appreciated. Yellow River State Forest is one of Iowa's largest state forests located in Iowa's Driftless Area. It has more than 45 miles of hiking trails, which provide countless amazing views as the leaves change color.

For maybe the most spectacular view in the state, take in the fall colors from the heights of Hitchcock Nature Center , which is surrounded by dunes that make for amazing hiking terrain, and the nature center itself has an exhibit gallery and observation tower.

If you're looking for a relaxing fall foliage cruise, Scenic City Empress Boat Club is setting sail with specialty rides along the Iowa River. Meanwhile, a ride on the Scenic City Empress also passes by a hidden waterfall, and the rates are affordable. The boats can also be hired for catered private cruises.

For those with a lot more energy, why not take an extended bike ride along the Iowa Great Lakes Trail as the colors are changing? The Iowa Great Lakes Trail is 14 miles long and passes through Iowa's Okoboji region - which means you'll be passing through some of Iowa's top attractions and water destinations.

And of course, a scenic drive across Iowa - like on Iowa's historic Route 6 - will provide incredible views of the state at its most beautiful. Route 6 starts in Council Bluffs and passes through small towns like Atlantic and the major metropolis of Des Moines, with many peaceful views on the open road along the way.

alt

What are your plans now that you know when leaves change color in Iowa? Tell us in the comments section! The SmokyMountains.com website can be viewed with up-to-the-minute predictions for this year's fall foliage season at any time. If you're planning to see the foliage in Iowa's many state parks and forests, you might want to subscribe to AllTrails Plus , which offers benefits like interactive trail maps.

Everyone In Iowa Should Take This Underappreciated Scenic Drive

The Loess Hills National Scenic Byway in Western Iowa offers a nearly 200-mile journey through unique and breathtaking natural formations.

When you think of stunning natural beauty in Iowa, most of our minds wander towards the east. The Mississippi River Valley is so overwhelming and impressive that it's easy to forget that Western Iowa is home to one of the Midwest's natural wonders — the incredible Loess Hills. Come along as we show you what is arguably one of the best scenic drives in Iowa . You will be amazed!

The Loess Hills National Scenic Byway runs up the western portion of the state, taking visitors along for a nearly 200-mile ride.

alt

The stunning Loess Hills are among the most unique formations in the Midwest. These rolling hills of forest and prairie are absolutely stunning in the fall.

alt

Follow the winding roads to Waubonsie State Park, where you'll find trails and overlooks.

alt

The road seems to go on forever, but you'll be in no hurry! The views along this route are breathtaking and unlike anywhere else in the world.

alt

Be sure to stop by Hitchcock Nature Center in Honey Creek, where you can climb an observation tower for sky-high views.

alt

You'll pass through dozens of towns along the 220-mile route. Visit Akron, Council Bluffs, Hamburg, Le Mars, and more as you get to know the breathtaking Missouri Valley.

alt

If you were to do a search for "scenic drives near me," this drive would most certainly appear near the top of the list!

You can find a full list of lodging options and restaurants along this journey by visiting the Loess Hills National Scenic Byway website, but the route is so vast that you'll have no issues picking restaurants and hotels along the way. I would highly recommend stopping by one of the many vineyards you'll drive by, too! Bodega Victoriana Winery and Keg Creek Brewing Co., both in Glenwood, are some of the best wineries in the state.

Absolutely perfect in all ways!

My Friend and I went on the Riverboat Twilight and it was the most perfect/awesome adventure! From reserving our trip to our final walk to our car after the two day cruise, all was perfect! Staff are amazing, from the Captain to the servers, to the musical entertainers. The food is suburb and generous! Everything is very well organized, from our luggage/hotel in Dubuque/seating for meals, free shuttles in Dubuque, etc! The scenery and info along the way from the captain was wonderful! This was an absolutely perfect two day cruise, and we are going again in Mid October as we loved it so much!!.

Karen V • Pella, Iowa

The service by all involved was first class all the way!

We were very impressed by the personal service we received by the staff and everyone involved. The trip was very nice from a sightseeing perspective, interesting from a historical perspective and very relaxing overall. Plus the food was plentiful and excellent. We highly recommend this cruise to everyone!

Denny F • Morgan Hill, California

Wonderful relaxing two days....

Extremely enjoyable trip. The cruise itself was delightful as you slowly moved up and down the river enjoying the wildlife and listening to the Captain explain the view and history. Unless you are a very big eater you have to be selective as they feed you FIVE times a day. Not only is the food plentiful but it is also very good. The Grand Resort in Dubuque was a nice stay as we had a view of the river. There was adequate time to explore some of the sights In Dubuque. I think we will do this trip again in the future…….

Ron S. • Tipton, Iowa

Fort Madison IA cruise port

Region Canada and USA Rivers

Local Time 2024-09-08 21:55

Fort Madison is a Mississippi River cruise port and city in Iowa USA's Lee County, with population around 10,000. Another "Madison" cruise port is Madison in Indiana (on Ohio River).

As cruise port, Fort Madison IA is included in the schedule of the USA's largest cruise line company ACL-American Cruise Lines .

Next is listed ACL's "Upper Mississippi River Cruise" itinerary that visits Fort Madison.

DAY 7
DAY 8Arriving in

The 7-night/8-day voyage (from St Louis MO/Alton IL to St Paul MN) is operated by the paddlewheeler American Heritage and the Modern Riverboats American Melody , American Serenade , American Symphony .

ACL offers two complimentary excursions in Fort Madison - the "Lee County Agritourism Excursion" (bus tour visiting two working farms - Hinterland Dairy Farmstead Cheese Farm, and Harvestville Farm) and "Historic Fort Madison Exploration" (bus tour to the military outpost site/1808-1813, and to the Iowa Territorial Prison/1839-2015).

In May 2019, city officials announced they are considering the construction of a new dock to serve river cruise ships. In April the city came to terms to fund and complete the Depot Project (including the new cruise platform) in the renovated historic depot. The new cruise facility will allow Viking River Cruises USA to include Fort Madison as a port of call in the company's Mississippi schedule thus annually bringing thousands of tourists to the city.

In the USD 1,5 million project, Viking invested $0,5 million. Fort Madison was included in the Viking Mississippi ship 's schedule/the boat's inaugural season in 2022. However, for now, the city is visited via an optional bus tour (from Burlington Iowa ) which also visits Nauvoo (Illinois).

In 2022 was initiated the USD 12 million "Fort Madison Marina Improvement Project" for increasing public access to the waterfront for economic and recreational and tourism purposes.

Most of Fort Madison's tourist attractions are in the Downtown Commercial Historic District and in the Park-to-Park Residential Historic District, both having well-preserved buildings representing various architectural styles. Annual activities that attract numerous domestic visitors to Fort Madison IA are the Tri-State Rodeo, Balloons Over the Mississippi, RiverFest, Mexican Fiesta, Central Park Art, the Parade of Lights (with lighted floats).

The settlement (as Fort Belleview) was established by the Army in the early-19th-century (1808) as Upper Mississippi's first permanent military post. It was constructed to control the region's trade and pacify the Sauks and other Indian tribes after the Louisiana Purchase (Louisiana Territory's acquisition in 1803) from the Revolutionary France/French Republic (1792-1804). The post was abandoned in 1813 and the reconstructed fort site is now a historic landmark (1973-listed in the US National Register of Historic Places). Fort Madison as a town was founded in 1835. It is named after James Madison Jr (1751-1836) who was the USA's fourth President (in office between 1809-1817).

The city is famous for the Fort Madison Toll Bridge (1927-opened) which is 2-deck/on 2 levels - the upper carries a 2-lane road (for vehicles) while the lower deck carries a 2-track railway (for trains). The bridge connects with Niota (Illinois) and is the Mississippi's last operational as well as the world's largest double swing-span/movable bridge (length 1 mi / 1,6 km, swing span 525 ft / 160 m).

The Bridge is owned and maintained by BNSF Railway and according to the USCG's regulations, the river traffic (cargo barges and cruise ships) has the right-of-way over the land-based traffic (vehicles and trains). Curiously, the bridge annually opens 2000+ times (or ~5 times daily) with openings lasting for ~15-20 min.

Amtrak's train station in Fort Madison is the only one in Iowa and is approx 2 mi / 3,2 km to the west of the bridge.

Fort Madison is Mississippi's crossing for Amtrak's long-distance railway service Southwest Chief (1974-established) linking the Great Lakes with California ( Chicago - Los Angeles /route length 2265 mi / 3645 km).

Mississippi River Cruises – Everything You Need To Know

Julie Green

| December 29, 2022

Thinking about what options you have for Mississippi River cruises? These are fantastic adventures and are really a lot of fun. Fact is, people have wanted to travel up and down the Mississippi River ever since Mark Twain wrote “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” and “Life on the Mississippi.” This river has been one of America’s endearing symbols of America’s waterways ever since. The romance of this cannot be truly appreciated unless you take a Mississippi River cruise. The river is 2,320 miles long and goes from Lake Itasca in upstate Minnesota to Pilottown, La., before emptying into the Gulf of Mexico. Wouldn’t it be fun to take a cruise on this historic river?

Those wanting to experience river boat travel on the Mississippi have several companies to choose from. However, two major ones stand out: the American Queen Steamboat Company and American Cruise Lines. These are also the only two that offer journeys lasting more than a couple days as their trips take at least a week to reach their destinations.

The American Queen Steamboat Company returned to the Mississippi River in 2012, and it now offers various cruises between New Orleans and St. Paul, Minn. The company promotes its cruises as some of the most sedentary vacations one can sign up for. Passengers will enjoy their trips on a 436-passenger American Queen boat that possesses a beautiful Victorian décor. Cruises cost from about $2,100 and up. This cost includes all meals and entertainment.

The company offers 10-day cruises that depart St. Louis and head north to St. Paul, Minn. Nine-day cruises travel the same route in the opposite direction. The stops that last from 4-9 hours vary depending on which direction the boat is traveling. These places include Hannibal, Mo., Burlington, Iowa, Davenport, Iowa, Dubuque, Iowa, La Crosse, Wis., Winona, Minn., and Red Wing, Minn.

There are also round-trip journeys lasting eight days traveling from St. Louis to Memphis, Tenn., and back. Stops on these routes also depend on the direction taken. These cities include New Madrid, Mo., Paducah, Ky., Cave-In-Rock, Ill., Cape Girardeau, Mo., and Chester, Ill. A nine-day trip from St. Louis to New Orleans stops in Memphis, Tenn., Natchez, Miss., Baton Rouge, La., and Burnside, La.

Nine-day single-way trips in both directions are available between New Orleans and Memphis, Tenn. These trips stop, depending on direction, at Vacherie, La., Burnside, La., Baton Rouge, La., St. Francisville, La., Natchez, Miss., Vicksburg, Miss., and Helena-West Helena, Ark. There are also journeys scheduled that start in New Orleans and head north before turning around and finishing back in the Crescent City. These stop at Vacherie, La., St. Francisville, La., Natchez, Miss., Vicksburg, Miss., Baton Rouge, La., and Burnside, La.

American Cruise Lines utilizes the Queen of the Mississippi riverboat for cruises along this great river. The boat can accommodate up to 150 passengers. The company offers a variety of seven-night cruises with a cost that ranges from $4,200 upward. That cost includes food and entertainment. This company, like the American Queen Steamboat Company, offers service on various routes between New Orleans and St. Paul, Minn.

The cruise from St. Louis to St. Paul, Minn., like the identical trip on the American Queen Steamboat Company, stops in Hannibal, Mo., Burlington, Iowa, Davenport, Iowa, Dubuque, Iowa, La Crosse, Wis., Winona, Minn., and Red Wing, Minn. The trip from New Orleans to Memphis, Tenn., makes stops in Vacherie, La., Baton Rouge, La., St. Francisville, La., Natchez, Miss., and Helena-West Helena, Ark.

Cruises from Memphis, Tenn., to St. Louis stop in Alton, Mo., Cape Girardeau, Mo., Paducah, Ky., Columbus, Ky., New Madrid, Mo., and Tunica, Miss. There are also trips that start and end in New Orleans that make stops in Natchez, Miss., Vicksburg, Miss., St. Francisville, La., Baton Rouge, La., and Vacherie, La.

Many of these stops have interesting features to them.

Hannibal, Mo., is where Mark Twain grew up and where many of his stories are based. Dubuque is Iowa’s oldest city and its largest for much of the 1800s. Winona, Minn., is home to the popular Winona Steamboat Days every June. Davenport, Iowa, is the largest city of the Quad Cities, a metropolitan area that is home to 383,000 people. There were more than 1,000 earthquakes from 1811-12 in New Madrid, Mo. Some are estimated to have reached or surpassed magnitude 8.0.

Cape Girardeau, Mo., is home to the beautiful Riverfront Park. There is a 900-pound Popeye the Sailor Man statue in Chester, Ill. Cave-In-Rock State Park is located near Cave-In-Rock, Ill. Paducah, Ky., is actually just off the Mississippi River at the confluence of the Ohio and Tennessee Rivers. Natchez is the former capital of Mississippi and home to an impressive collection of antebellum homes. Louisiana’s capital city, Baton Rouge, is home to Louisiana State University.

The Houmas House Plantation and Gardens may be found in Burnside, La. The Oak Valley Plantation is in Vacherie, La. More than 140 buildings on the National Register are in St. Francisville, La. The Southern Cultural Heritage Center is in Vicksburg, Miss. Alton, Mo., was the site of the last debate between Stephen Douglas and Abraham Lincoln in 1858. Columbus-Belmont State Park is in Columbus, Ky. The Civil War’s Battle of Belmont also took place there. Tunica, Miss., is the site of a growing gambling resort area just south of Memphis, Tenn.

There are several companies that offer day cruises along the Mississippi River.

Riverboat Twilight offers two-day trips in addition to its one-day cruises. This company’s boats travel between Le Claire, Iowa, just north of the Quad Cities, up to Dubuque, Iowa. It stops at Fulton, Iowa, and Bellevue, Iowa, on the two-day cruises. Its costs range from $399 and up for the one-day cruises and from $419 and up for the two-day cruises. The prices include meals and entertainment.

Spirit of Peoria offers several cruises. However, only one of them is primarily on the Mississippi River. This is a nine-hour trip that consists of a cruise north from St. Louis to Grafton, Ill., and a coach ride back to the Gateway to the West. Grafton is a city of 674 that is located about 37 miles driving distance from St. Louis right where the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers come together. The Spirit of Peoria is a 487-passenger boat. The cost for this journey is $140. Live entertainment and stops at the Chain of Rocks and Mel Price Locks are included.

Two companies, Natchez and Creole Queen, offer cruises lasting from 2-3 hours that depart from New Orleans and feature breathtaking views of this beautiful city. Many of the journeys include live jazz music and focus on the history of the area. The cost for these trips ranges from $25 and up.

Whatever cruise that you choose, a voyage along the Mississippi River is one you won’t soon forget!

While onboard the vessel and when making use of our food and beverages services, children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
