Luxury 80ft sports yacht sinks off Florida coast triggering coast guard rescue

The US Coast Guard rescued two people this weekend after their luxury sports yacht sank off the Florida coast.

The operator of the Atlantis, an 80-foot yacht. alerted the US Coast Guard on Saturday morning that the boat had struck an object and was taking on water.

The yacht was three miles off the coast of the picturesque city of St Augustine, Florida when the call came in.

Pictures showed the stern of the vessel sinking beneath the waves before it finally tipped into a vertical position and sank further.

St John’s County Fire Department rescued both people on board, according to the US Coast Guard.

An alert was subsequently issued for nearby mariners about the partially submerged yacht, which was still in the water as of late Saturday.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to St. John’s County Fire and Rescue for their invaluable assistance during this case,” Senior Chief Petty Officer Ricardo Santacana, from the US Coast Guard, said in a statement.

“With the weather improving and mariners heading out onto the water, it’s imperative for everyone to verify the presence of all necessary safety equipment aboard their vessel.”

“This ensures that responders, as demonstrated in this case, can swiftly locate you and render assistance when an emergency arises,” he continued.

Sports yachts of a similar size to Atlantis are typically worth upwards of $1m, according to International Yacht Sales .

The Independent has contacted the US Coast Guard for comment.

Earlier this year, a pod of orcas managed to sink a sailing yacht near the Strait of Gibraltar. However, that vessel was much smaller, measuring roughly 50ft.

The March incident was the latest in a string of orca-related yacht sinkings in the region. Marine experts at the time said they believe a subpopulation of about 15 orcas known as “Gladis” is carrying out these attacks.

The 115.76m/379'9" classic yacht 'Atlantis II' was built by Hellenic Shipyards in Greece at their Skaramangas shipyard and she was delivered to her owner in October 1981. This luxury vessel's exterior design is the work of Caesar Pinnau.

A General Description of Motor Yacht ATLANTIS II

This 116 metre (380 foot) luxury yacht was developed at Hellenic Shipyards in 1981. Motor Yacht ATLANTIS II is a colossal superyacht. The naval architect who actualised this yacht's design with respect to this ship was Maierform and Prof. Cesare Pinau. Her initial interior was the work of the talented Michael Sumner. Luxury yacht ATLANTIS II is a handsome yacht that can sleep as many as 26 passengers on board and has a total of 17 crew members.

Motor yacht Atlantis II is a sister ship to the older yacht called Issham Al Baher, which was originally called Atlantis, built in 1973 which Stavros Niarchos gave to King Fahd. Atlantis II remains in the hands of the Niarchos family and is often tied stern-to in Monaco’s Port Hercule.

Build & Naval Architecture with respect to Luxury Yacht ATLANTIS II

Maierform was the naval architecture company involved in the technical superyacht composition for ATLANTIS II. Also the company Maierform and Prof Cesare Pinau expertly worked on this project. Interior designer Michael Sumner was commissioned for the internal interior ambience. Greece is the country that Hellenic Shipyards completed their new build motor yacht in. After formal launch in 1981 in Skaramanga she was passed over to the owner after final finishing. A impressive area is achieved with a total beam (width) of 14.45 m or 47.4 ft. With a 4.27m (14ft) draught (maximum depth) she is fairly deep. The material steel was used in the building of the hull of the motor yacht. Her superstructure above deck is fashioned from steel.

Engines & Speed On M/Y ATLANTIS II:

For propulsion ATLANTIS II has twin screw propellers. The engine of the yacht produces 4800 horse power (or atlantis II kilowatts). She is fitted with 2 engines. The combined output for the yacht is thus 9600 HP or 7064 KW. With respect to stabalisers she utilises Vickers.

On board Superyacht ATLANTIS II She has Passenger Accommodation For Guest:

Providing cabins for a limit of 26 welcome guests spending the night, the ATLANTIS II accommodates everyone in luxury. Normally the vessel uses circa 17 proficient crew to maintain and sail.
