Chartering Your Own Yacht - The Complete Guide

Thinking about whether you should charter your yacht here's everything you should know about it..

Buying a yacht for private use is a great investment - in your future adventures, in your new lifestyle, in your mental and physical well-being. You get to explore the unexplored, spend quality time with your friends and family, or party like a celebrity. It's an experience of a lifetime and a dream come true for many.

However, even though you try your best to maximize your time on board, there are still weeks or even months when the boat’s unused and the crew ‘underutilized’. When your boat is just sitting in the marina, it’s just costing you money.

That’s why you should consider putting your yacht in a charter fleet. It can not only offset your expenses but even generate profit. Most importantly, it guarantees that your yacht is fully maintenanced and in top shape for when you decide to set sail on another vacation.

The benefits of chartering your yacht

Chartering your yacht is a great strategy for making some money off your yacht when you’re not using it. But there are also a number of other advantages - here are the main ones:

Reduced operational costs & additional income

A busy charter yacht can cover a significant portion of your operating expenses such as dockage, maintenance, insurance, and other incidentals. Additionally, charter yacht ownership produces an income that you otherwise as a private owner wouldn’t have, providing a faster return on the investment.

Increased yacht reputation and value

A yacht that is marketed for charter has a better market profile. On top of that, If the yacht is active and has a proven success record of providing high quality experience to its clients, it will attract both charter guests and potential buyers in the future. In the long run, chartering is a sound strategy for increasing your boat’s value which would otherwise depreciate with time.

The yacht stays in top-notch condition

It may sound counterintuitive but yachts that are part of the charter fleet are usually more regularly and better maintained. Frequent cosmetic and mechanical maintenance that chartering requires can extend the life of your yacht and preserve its resale value.

More experienced boat crew

Charter yachts attract the best caliber of crew that will maintain their service at the highest industry standard. That also means you can enjoy the same quality of service whenever you decide to use it for personal plans.

Earnings and expenses

As a yacht owner, you can definitely earn a profit by chartering your yacht and offset your costs. Here’s the breakdown:

The price of the charter depends on the market, the size, model, condition of your boat, the number of cabins, etc. The expenses which you must take into account as the boat owner include:

  • registration
  • ship maintenance
  • crew salaries
  • charter equipment (water toys, bed linen, towels, shampoos, etc.)
  • professional photography

Even though there are many factors that influence the boat price, we at Magnum always try to set a competitive price that’ll make you stand out on the yacht charter market.  See the prices for the luxury yachts in our fleet here.

How many weeks can I charter my yacht?

For luxury yachts, you can expect your yacht to be booked for a minimum of 6-12 weeks a year, depending on the season.

The average number of weeks is higher for chartering sailboats and catamarans, usually about 14-20 weeks.

What to expect of a yacht charter management company?

With the right agency for yacht charter management , you can reap all the benefits of chartering your own yacht - offset operational costs, keep your crew sharp and your boat in top shape, as well as build a brand reputation.

The role of such a company is to provide consulting, support and help you achieve maximum booking through thoughtful promotion.

Here’s how that works in the example of Magnum:

Once a yacht owner decides to partner with our agency, we both sign the Central Booking Agreement. It states the rights and obligations of the owner, as well as the rights and obligations of us as a central agency. In it we also define the price list according to which the charter service for a particular vessel will be charged.

The agreement can be signed for a definite period (1 year) or for an indefinite period and can be terminated via written notice (from either party).

Bookings, promotion & payments

Once we sign the Central Booking Agreement with the boat owner, we focus all our efforts on promotion and positioning the boat on the market. It takes some time for the yacht to become "recognized" on the market but since we have access to a large global booking system through which we receive inquiries (YACHTFOLIO), this process doesn’t take too long.

A central agency for yacht charter management will help you to achieve more bookings through top yacht promotion. (Image source: Shutterstock)

After receiving an inquiry from a potential client, we send them a detailed offer with the price and presentation materials (brochure, crew profile, etc.), to give them a complete and better impression of the yacht. If the client confirms the booking, we sign the MYBA contract. The contract is signed by all the parties involved in the booking process - the client (charterer), broker, stakeholder and the yacht owner.

Payment to the yacht owner is made in such a way that half of the amount to be paid to the owner is paid on the day of the boarding, and the remaining amount on the day of unloading (or the first working day, if unloading day is during the weekend).

The responsibilities of the yacht owner

If you decide to charter your yacht, here’s what’s expected of you as the owner:

  • During the term of the Central Booking Agreement, the yacht owner is not allowed to enter a business partnership with another yacht charter agency and is obliged to refer all agents who may contact him to his central agent.
  • The yacht owner mustn’t promote his yacht independently or without the consent of his central agent.
  • The owner must deliver professional photographs of the boat to the agency.
  • The owner is obliged to invoice his charters in accordance with the regulations of the Republic of Croatia.
  • The yacht owner is obliged to ensure the registration of the vessel and to have valid insurance policies.
  • The yacht owner must provide other documentation and take actions that precede the provision of accommodation services on board.
  • The yacht owner is obliged to provide an adequate crew in accordance with the size of the boat and the uniforms for all crew members.
  • The yacht owner is obliged to sign the charter agreements on time and report any problems or delays to the agency as soon as possible.
  • The boat must be adequately prepared for chartering - that includes cleaning, equipment procurement, as well as accommodation, uniforms & training for the crew members.
  • The yacht owner must have a registered company and be able to issue invoices.

Is Owning a Yacht for Charter Profitable

Is owning a yacht for charter profitable.

Yes, owning a yacht for charter can be profitable but owning a yacht will rarely “pay for itself.” Chartering your yacht presents some unique benefits that can lead to opportunities to make a profit off of your investment in a myriad of ways, including offsetting the cost of owning a yacht , selling your yacht for a profit, and even making a profit (if you’re among the lucky few who have the know-how and the right vessel).

Welcome to the yachting lifestyle.

Offsetting the Costs of Owning a Yacht

Chartering out your personal yacht to offset ownership costs..

One of the greatest benefits of chartering your yacht is making some money from your investment when you’re not using it. It’s a simple way to offset the cost of something that would otherwise sit and cost money. It also gives you more to work with as far as keeping the yacht up to date.

Keep in mind, the service and maintenance of a yacht is expensive but also a primary factor in whether or not your yacht will continue to retain value or even exceed value. Since routine refittings and redesigns are often unavoidable and cost up to 10 percent of your yacht’s value each year, this option offers you the added benefit of maximizing profits as well as your enjoyment each time you decide to set sail on another vacation.

Yacht charter management is a strategy to not only maintain your yacht, but also pay less in the long run when it comes to costs of docking, maintenance, insurance, and other operating expenses for your yacht.

Selling Your Yacht for Profit

Gaining a positive reputation among a network of yacht enthusiasts..

Net profits from a yacht charter are a faraway dream for most, but not impossible for some. Having a company to manage your charter within a flourishing network of yachters will help maximize your return on investment. There are some makes, models, and routes that are much more popular, and it pays to know where to best place your investment from the start, as unlike the trend with most types of cars or boats, not all yachts immediately begin depreciating in value.

Opening your vessel up to a network of yacht enthusiasts also increases the likelihood that your yacht will gain a positive reputation, thus more value among buyers or anyone interested in a yacht charter, making it much more desirable for both charter guests and purchases—that is, if it is a well-managed operation. It’s much more likely a prospect looking to buy your yacht will take it for a spin before purchasing.

Built-for-Profit Vessel

Some yachts are specifically designed to make money..

Having a yacht that is custom-built for charters or, put simply, turning profits, is the best way to go about using a yacht charter solely for investment purposes. It’s not impossible to make money with a yacht charter, but it also takes a good amount of experience and skill to get the job done right.

There are so many dynamic factors that are involved with running a successful yacht for charter operation, and one of the main things to keep in mind is the quality of service you’re providing your customers. This will be a factor in determining how much your vessel is worth to your yacht charter guests.

Owning a yacht for charter is profitable in more ways than one, but getting all the moving parts right requires some know-how and expertise with yacht charters. Remember, you can offset the cost of owning your yacht, sell your yacht for a profit, or design a yacht for money-making purposes—the dream is possible with help from experts.

Be it profit or pleasure, a yacht yields a lifetime of happiness.

How Do I Start My Own Boat Charter Business?

Table of Contents

Last Updated on May 19, 2022 by Boatsetter Team

Have you ever thought about starting a charter business ? As a boat owner, you might have found that the costs of owning a boat can add up quickly. You might not have quite as much time as you used to for boating now, so it might seem that your boat goes unused for much of the year. Likewise, there’s been a lot of talk in the last year about the “Great Resignation”—people quitting their jobs out of a desire for something better. Fascinatingly, many Americans have turned to entrepreneurship.

For many, starting their own business has meant joining the rapidly growing sharing economy (think the Airbnb, Uber, and Turo’s of the world). Believe it or not, you can do the same thing by listing your vessel as a boat charter, or even just as a basic boat rental. So, how do you get started? Easy—you can start your own boat, yacht or fishing charter business right here on Boatsetter .

Before we dive in, let’s take a closer look at the various types of charters you may be interested in running, and some tips for success as you get started.

How to Start a Boat Charter Business

  • Determine the type of charter you’re interested in running—bareboat boat, captained, fishing, or luxury yacht charters.
  • Use a peer-to-peer boat rental platform to list your boat(s) or fleet.
  • Easy secure peer-to-peer or commercial boat insurance , for peace-of-mind to protect yourself and your boats from potential damages and liability.
  • Create a listing for your boat(s) or charter(s), including price, location, images, description, and other relevant details.
  • Manage your charter business (bookings, schedule, payment, reviews) directly on the peer-to-peer rental platform.

Types of Boat Charters

Firstly, boat charter is another way of saying “boat rental.” As the owner, you make your vessel available for other cruisers to book. They can do so for as little as a few hours. Additionally, you’re typically providing just the boat. Therefore, the cruisers are responsible for navigation and provisioning—although there are exceptions.

For instance, with some charter boat businesses, boat owners provide a customized itinerary and necessary provisions. They may provide a professional captain, too—these are called captained charters . This is especially helpful if the interested parties are unfamiliar with the waters. It’s also important for novice boaters. In fact, it’s common for newcomers to use boat and yacht charter as a way to “try before you buy.”

Two types of charter boat businesses that definitely include captains and custom itineraries are fishing charters and luxury yacht charters.

  • Fishing charters are exactly what they sound like: a few hours on the water pursuing different fish, with an expert guide. The boat owner supplies the fishing gear, along with safety equipment, of course, and niceties like bottled water.
  • Luxury yacht charters , meanwhile, offer more white-glove service. They’re typically up to a week in a highly desirable location, ranging from the Bahamas to the Caribbean and to the Mediterranean. The yachts come with full professional crews, too, like a chef, stewardesses, and deckhands. All meals are included, with menus tailored to your tastes. The same is true for activities, like using watertoys.

Finally, bareboat charters are when cruisers rent or lease out a vessel for a certain period with time, with no crew or provisions provided.

Advice & Tips for Success for Starting Your Own Boat Charter Business

Use a peer-to-peer boat rental marketplace to list, manage, and advertise your fleet.

So, what exactly does starting a charter boat business entail? First, you should use a peer-to-peer rental platform, like Boatsetter !

Here’s how it works… Our team walk you through the process in getting started, and we’ll provide support each and every step of the way—from sign up, to listing your boat, connecting with potential renters, managing your boat’s schedule, and of course, getting paid!

Learn more about the process by visiting Why List with Boatsetter.

Understanding Insurance For a Boat Rental Business

Since your boat is a valuable asset, you need to be sure that it is safe if you decide to offer it as a charter rental. There are good reasons that you need good boat insurance , such as protecting yourself and your boat from expensive damage. Luckily, Boatsetter is the only peer-to-peer marketplace in the US that offers peer-to-peer boat insurance , thanks to our exclusive partnership with GEICO/BoatUS.

This Peer-to-Peer Boat Rental Policy is the primary policy that covers you during the Boatsetter rental period and it doesn’t require you to change anything that you already have with your regular boat policy. Each Boatsetter rental covered under this policy comes with significant liability coverage, and is ideal for owners who are interested in chartering because the insurance costs are very low.

Create Your Detailed Listing to Ensure You Stand Out from the Rest

Once you have adequate insurance, you’ll still need to find people who want to rent your boat. Here are some really easy ways to make your boat more attractive as a charter rental when listing on Boatsetter (take a quick look at this list too).

Check Out Your Competition

Be sure to browse how owners of boats similar to yours list them. How do they describe the amenities? What types of photos do they include? What rates do they charge? Use these to determine the best way to show-and-tell your boat, as well as the experience cruisers can enjoy.

Include Great Images—and a Strong Description—and Keep Them Updated Regularly

In general, when listing your boat as a charter rental, keep your listing as current as possible by updating your images constantly.

Weigh your options for how and when to offer your boat for charter. Do you want to provide a few hours on weekdays during spring, summer, and fall in your home waters? Are you open to both weekdays and weekends during peak season? Or, do you chase the sun and therefore want to offer charters in different states at different times of the year?

Always Provide Good Customer Service

Always respond as quickly as you can to queries about your charter rental. Make sure you obtain reviews from previous satisfied customers. Finally, make sure your price is competitive and comparable to the cost of other similar charter rentals.

If you follow those suggestions, it should be easy to list your boat as a charter rental. Once you’ve signed up your boat on Boatsetter and successfully listed it as a charter rental a few times, you might want to invest in a few more boats. Luckily, listing your boat on Boatsetter is a seamless process. Our expert team is available to walk you through any questions you might have.

The Boatsetter Difference

Since you’re already here at Boatsetter , you may know that its peer-to-peer rental platform makes starting a boat charter business pretty simple. In fact, Boatsetter’s co-founder, Jaclyn Baumgarten, created the company because she believed that boats should be as accessible as Airbnb rental properties. Simultaneously, she believed that boat owners should be able to earn money to offset upkeep costs.

While Boatsetter lets you respond to booking requests and messages, it makes your listings—and time—more workable in other ways. Boat managers are at your disposal to handle these tasks, plus update your calendar and edit listings.

Of primary importance, though, Boatsetter is the only insured peer-to-peer boat rental platform in the United States. GEICO Marine Insurance Company underwrites coverage, created from scratch as a standalone policy covering the period of time the boat is under rental. And, for even more safety and peace of mind, on-the-water assistance comes via TowBoatUS.

All that’s left to do now is to list and lease—and love how you can earn.

WHY DYNAMIQ?

Forward thinking design, innovative naval architecture, highest engineering standards, top-quality steel & aluminium construction, ocean-going range, smart pricing.

Forward thinking design

Dynamiq's unique exteriors look impressive and fresh and express the sporty, chic soul of our yachts. They not only look great, but also perform at the top of their class and lend owners a sense of exclusivity and pride.

Innovative naval architecture

Dynamiq’s high efficiency is based on innovative technologies in modern naval architecture: fast displacement hull lines, the Hull Vane under the stern, and Sleipner curved fin stabilizers. Completely drawn by leading naval architects in the Netherlands, all Dynamiq yachts feature a round-bilge shape for remarkably low resistance and low fuel consumption, while providing seaworthiness and comfort with long waterline length and low centre of gravity.

Highest engineering standards

Each Dynamiq yacht is by definition safe, comfortable and environmentally friendly in accordance with the strictest RINA and BV Commercial Class standards, prestigious Comfort and Green Star Plus notations, Large Yacht Code 4 (LY4) compliancy and manning standards. This not only makes our vessels ultra-safe and almost silent, but also means they can be chartered to offset the cost of ownership.

Top-quality steel & aluminium construction

Only certified marine-grade steel, aluminium and Sealium are used for Dynamiq hulls and superstructures. In comparison with composite hulls, they are much quieter, easier to repair and have higher trade-in value due to the fact that they have a very long service life.

Ocean-going range

Dynamiq yachts are designed with an ocean-going capability in mind, which means owners have the opportunity to enjoy multiple seasons during the year (say Mediterranean and Caribbean) and visit remote locations with no re-fueling infrastructure. Equipped with high-capacity marine fridges and freezers, cold garbage stores, separate laundry facilities, plenty of storage space, generous fresh water tanks and powerful water-makers, Dynamiq yachts provide autonomy at sea in complete comfort.

Smart pricing

Combining Dutch engineering with production facilities in the one of the biggest Turkish shipbuilding hubs of Antalya Free Zone means Dynamiq can offer North European standards and quality craftsmanship at significantly reduced prices. Being pioneers in the superyacht industry, Dynamiq also has an Online Configurator where clients can customize their yachts in a few clicks and see in real time how the price and delivery times vary.

The Cost of Owning a Yacht: A Detailed Breakdown

  • by yachtman
  • August 26, 2023 June 22, 2024

grow your own yacht

Yachting is a luxury and exciting experience. But have you ever thought of the cost of owning a yacht ? Let’s take a dive into the details and explore the financial part of owning a yacht.

As you start your yachting journey, there are various costs to keep in mind. The purchase price of a yacht can range from hundreds of thousands to millions , depending on its size, brand, and features. Plus, there are annual maintenance charges to keep the yacht in tip-top condition. These include insurance fees, dockage fees, regular maintenance and repairs, and crew salaries if you hire one.

Fuel consumption is also a major expense for yacht owners. The bigger the vessel, the more fuel it needs to sail the waterways. Fuel prices change all over the world and can affect your budget significantly.

You also have to think of mooring or berthing fees . They depend on your location and whether you want marinas or private docks. Marinas with great facilities usually cost more than basic dockage options.

Pro Tip: Make a thorough budget, including the initial purchase cost and ongoing expenses like maintenance, fuel, insurance, and berthing fees. By planning in advance and considering all costs of owning a yacht, you can avoid any financial surprises.

Owning a yacht is a luxurious and prestigious thing. But, it’s important to be aware of the financial commitment. With proper preparation and a good budgeting plan, you can enjoy your yachting trips without worrying about money.

The allure of yacht ownership

A yacht is alluring. People from all walks of life are drawn to the promise of luxury, adventure, and escaping land. What makes yacht ownership so tempting? Here are 6 points:

  • Explore: With a yacht, you can explore the beauty of untamed waters. From coves to islands, it’s a world of opportunity.
  • Status: Yacht ownership symbolizes success and affluence. It grabs attention.
  • Comfort: Yachts are designed for ultimate comfort for owners and guests. Cabins and amenities make it luxurious.
  • Adventure: Owning a yacht opens up thrilling experiences – like deep-sea fishing and water sports.
  • Privacy: Aboard your own yacht, you can escape the world and enjoy privacy. It’s a sanctuary.
  • Memories: Host unforgettable parties or share intimate moments with loved ones against a stunning ocean backdrop.

Yacht owners have the chance to customize their vessel. Plus, there are networking opportunities and investment potential. But remember – maintenance, crew salaries, and fuel expenses can add up quickly. Think about your financial abilities before taking the plunge.

The initial purchase cost

To understand the initial purchase cost of owning a yacht, let’s delve into the factors that influence the cost. Additionally, we’ll explore the average price ranges for different yacht types. This will provide you with a comprehensive breakdown of the expenses involved in becoming a yacht owner.

Factors that influence the cost

Different elements can hugely vary the cost of a purchase. Materials, production techniques, transport expenses and extra features or customizations can all affect it. Businesses must take this into account to accurately work out the initial cost and make wise decisions.

To better understand these elements, let’s look at this table:

Factors Description
Material Quality and type of material in the product
Production Manufacturing process techniques
Transportation Costs associated with transporting the product
Additional Features Special components or improvements to the product

By studying this, firms can figure out what elements are important for the cost. This allows them to choose appropriate pricing and financial planning.

Other details can also influence the purchase cost. These may relate to the demand for a product, currency exchange rates or laws in different countries. Companies must be aware of these things to adapt their pricing strategies and make profit.

It is clear that careful evaluation is necessary to make informed business decisions.

Size and type of yacht

The size and type of a yacht is a key factor in its purchase price. Here’s a table with examples :

Size (ft) Type Price (in millions USD)
40 Motor Yacht 1 – 3
60 Sailing 2 – 6
80 Expedition 5 – 10

Other details, like engine power, fuel capacity and navigation systems can greatly affect the initial cost and long-term expenses.

Believe it or not, yachts have been used for leisure since ancient times – evidence from ancient Egypt! (source: maritimehistory.org)

Brand and quality

Brand and quality have a big impact on the initial purchase cost. Reputable brands with good reliability can be pricier, but they often offer better durability and performance , which can save money over time.

Take a look at this table:

Brand Quality Price
A High $100
B Medium $75
C Low $50

Higher quality products from reliable brands are more expensive . They invest in research, development, and manufacturing to ensure their products meet high standards.

Low-quality brands may be cheaper, but they often come with poor durability and performance . Eventually, the frequent replacements or repairs can make them more expensive in the long run.

To decide on the right brand and quality, consider these tips:

  • Read customer reviews : Check what other customers have said about the product before buying it. This will give you an idea of its durability and performance.
  • Compare prices : Look at different brands offering similar products. You may find some less popular brands that offer great quality at a lower price.
  • Think long-term costs : Think beyond the initial purchase cost and look at factors such as warranty coverage, maintenance requirements, and potential repair costs. Spending more on a higher-quality brand may save money in the future.

It all comes down to finding the balance between upfront costs and long-term value. Research the product and consider all aspects of performance to make a decision that fits your budget and quality expectations.

Features and customization

Features and customization have a big role in the initial cost. These things decide the product’s functionality and how well it fits a person’s needs.

  • Features: A product with lots of features can make it more valuable. Customers are often willing to pay more for products with new and interesting features like tech, better performance, or extra functions.
  • Customization: Being able to change a product to what people want is appreciated. Customization lets people adjust the product to their needs, leading to more satisfaction and loyalty. It includes things like color choices, design variations, and personalized settings.
  • Flexibility: Products that let people switch features and customize are popular. Flexibility lets users change the product as their needs change, so they don’t have to buy a new one or upgrade. This adds more value and lowers costs.

Research has also shown that features and customization affect customers’ buying choices (Smith et al., 2020). Companies can use this information to create products that match what people want while still making a profit.

Average price ranges for different yacht types

Considering buying a yacht? It’s useful to know the average prices of different types. Check the table below to get an idea:

Type of Yacht Average Price Range
Motor Yacht $500,000 – $10 million
Sailboat $50,000 – $5 million
Catamaran $200,000 – $5 million

Keep in mind these are just general ranges. They could vary depending on size, age, brand, and features. That’s why you should factor in these things when deciding the cost. In addition to the purchase cost, there are other expenses such as maintenance, fuel, insurance, docking, and crew wages. Make sure to budget for these too. To make the best of your investment, here are some tips:

  • Research: Take your time to investigate different yachts and their costs.
  • Consider pre-owned: Buying used can be more affordable. But get it checked by a surveyor first.
  • Budget: Plan for ongoing costs. Have a clear understanding before buying.
  • Consult: Speak to experienced brokers or yacht owners. They can offer advice and help pick the right yacht.

By doing this, you can manage the purchase cost and later expenses better. That way, you’ll have a pleasant yacht ownership experience without any unpleasant surprises.

Ongoing expenses

To manage the ongoing expenses of yacht ownership, you need to consider various factors. This includes maintenance and repairs, docking and mooring fees, insurance and registration fees, crew and staffing costs, as well as fuel, maintenance, and other operating expenses. By understanding these sub-sections, you can better plan and budget for the financial obligations that come with owning a yacht.

Maintenance and repairs

Regular maintenance is key to preventing breakdowns, reducing downtime, and avoiding costly repairs. Timely inspections can help spot potential issues before they worsen. A tailored preventive maintenance schedule can help reduce unexpected breakdowns and extend asset life. Investing in quality materials for repairs results in more durable fixes and fewer recurring issues.

Maintenance not only saves money but also promotes a safe working environment. It reduces the risk of accidents and helps comply with safety regulations.

To optimize processes:

  • Create a maintenance plan that fits your specific needs and requirements. This includes scheduled inspections, routine servicing, and protocols for handling repairs.
  • Train employees on proper equipment handling and basic troubleshooting. This can prevent major breakdowns or delays.
  • Establish relationships with reliable suppliers who offer quality parts at competitive prices. Having access to replacement components quickly can minimize downtime during repairs.
  • Outsource certain maintenance tasks to specialized professionals who have the expertise for complex repairs or intricate machinery.

By approaching maintenance and repairs proactively, you can reduce risks, costs associated with extensive damage, minimize downtime, enhance workplace safety, and extend asset life.

Docking and mooring fees

Ongoing costs for a boat? Unavoidable. One of these expenses is docking and mooring fees . These fees pay for securing your boat at a marina or dock. Plus, you get essential services.

Let’s check out the costs:

  • Annual Contract Fees: Get 1-10k per year from marinas for annual contracts. It depends on the size of the boat and the marina’s location.
  • Daily or Weekly Rates: Short-term stays or occasional trips? Marinas offer daily or weekly rates. Varying prices, depending on season, location, and amenities.
  • Extra Services: Some marinas have extra services for extra fees. This could include electricity, water, Wi-Fi, laundry, showers, waste disposal, and security.
  • Seasonal Discounts: Marinas offer discounts during quieter months. This could save you a good chunk of cash if you plan your trips well.

But remember, certain locations have restrictions which could affect availability and fees. A sailor I know once visited a coastal town. He found out that the marina had recently doubled their fees due to peak summer demand! That was an expensive lesson in researching local rates.

These fees are important to manage expenses. Stay informed about costs and make informed decisions. Then you can enjoy your boating without it hitting your wallet too hard.

Insurance and registration fees

Insurance: Car insurance is necessary when owning a car. It offers financial protection in case of accidents, theft, or damage. Your premiums depend on driving history, age, car type, and coverage options.

Registration fees: Registering your vehicle is essential. This involves paying a fee for road maintenance and costs. The fee varies based on the vehicle, value, and local regulations.

Renewal frequency: Both insurance and registration fees need to be refreshed often. Insurance usually lasts a year or less, while registration fees may be yearly or bi-yearly. Remembering renewal dates is key to avoid gaps in coverage and fines.

Cost-saving measures: Compare quotes from different providers, go for higher deductibles, or bundle multiple vehicles together to reduce insurance costs. Look out for discounts and incentives to save money on registration fees.

Pro Tip: Review your insurance periodically. Reassessing your needs can lead to savings without weakening protection.

Crew and staffing costs

The table below outlines the breakdown of crew and staffing costs:

Category Amount ($)
Salaries 50,000
Benefits 10,000
Training 5,000
Uniforms 2,000

This data showcases the amount spent on salaries, benefits, training and uniforms . Investing in staff is vital to the success of an organization.

Cost-saving measures can be implemented without compromising quality. Job analyses can help identify roles that can be merged or outsourced. Additionally, training programs can be optimized to equip staff with necessary skills.

Organizations must aim to strike a balance between financial prudence and employee excellence. Doing so supports operational success and values the contribution of all individuals.

Fuel, maintenance, and other operating expenses

Let’s take a look at the breakdown:

  • Fuel costs $500,
  • maintenance $300,
  • operating supplies $200,
  • insurance $150,
  • and licensing fees $100.

All this adds up to $1,250.

Fuel can be a large expense for transport-based businesses. Maintenance keeps equipment running. Operating supplies, like stationery and raw materials, are needed daily. Insurance and licenses protect your business.

The amounts may differ depending on your business and industry standards. You should keep track of these items for budgeting and cost reduction. Monitor these figures to stay financially stable and to grow your business. Keep an eye on fuel, maintenance, and other operating costs – they affect your bottom line. Proactively assess these expenses to ensure your success!

Hidden costs and unexpected expenses

To better navigate the hidden costs and unexpected expenses associated with owning a yacht, equip yourself with knowledge about depreciation and resale value, upgrades and renovations, taxes and legal considerations, as well as safety and security measures. These sub-sections offer valuable insights that will help you make informed decisions and mitigate potential financial surprises.

Depreciation and resale value

Check out the table below. It shows the decrease in a vehicle’s resale value caused by depreciation.

Year Purchase Price ($) Resale Value ($)
1 20,000 16,000
2 19,000 12,000
3 18,000 8,000
4 17,000 5,000
5 16,000 3,000

It’s clear that depreciation leads to financial losses. Don’t forget to consider other factors too like mileage, maintenance history, and market demand.

Let me give you an example. My friend sold his 1-year-old car that he bought for $30k . But he only got $24k for it. That’s a big drop in value in just a year. He was not expecting that extra expense.

Upgrades and renovations

Unexpected costs in Upgrades and Renovations can shock any homeowner. To make sure you enjoy your dream home without any financial worries, prepare a special emergency fund for unplanned expenses. Ready for surprises? Then you can have peace of mind during the renovation process.

Structural issues, fluctuating material prices, contractor delays, permit fees, fancy finishes and appliances, and hidden complications behind walls can all unexpectedly drive up costs. Be wise and set aside some money – you’ll be prepared to tackle any surprise!

Taxes and legal considerations

Let’s delve into a table that shows key points on taxes and legal considerations:

Tax Type Description
Income Tax Levied on earnings
Sales Tax Applied to goods and services
Property Tax Imposed on real estate
Corporate Tax On profits of businesses

Legal compliance means following the laws.

Each jurisdiction has different rules on taxation and legal requirements. It is important to know the nuances. John , a self-employed person, found this out the hard way. When he started selling handmade crafts online, he didn’t understand his tax obligations.

John was surprised when he got a notice asking for backdated tax. He hadn’t accounted for income or sales tax from his online transactions. This cost him expenses and stress. This story reminds us how essential it is to be educated on taxes and legal considerations.

Safety and security measures

Conducting regular risk assessments is necessary. Identify risks, assess them and figure out the level of harm they may cause. This will help ward off potential vulnerabilities.

Robust access control systems must be set up. This will limit access to authorized personnel only. Technologies like biometric authentication or RFID cards can take security to a higher level.

Emergency response plans and procedures are a must. Train employees about evacuation protocols. Also, set up communication channels and rehearse drills often. This will help to reduce harm and disruption.

Moreover, safety audits can be done to check safety measures and find areas for improvement. Independent professionals usually carry them out. They look into compliance with standards and best practices.

Financing and ownership options

To better understand financing and ownership options for yachts, delve into the following sub-sections: buying outright, fractional ownership, and chartering and rental opportunities. Discover how each solution offers a unique approach to yacht ownership, giving you the flexibility to choose the option that aligns with your needs and preferences.

Buying outright

No installment plans? No problem!

Immediate ownership, without a worry of interest or financing terms.

This can be great for those with the funds to buy outright.

But, remember! Carefully consider your budget and ensure enough funds for other essential expenses.

Fractional ownership

Features Benefits
Shared Ownership Cost sharing & lighter financial load
Access to High-Value Assets Chance to invest in otherwise inaccessible assets
Professional Management Professional management & efficient resource utilization
Flexibility Ability to quickly sell or transfer ownership
Variety of Assets Variety of assets through owning fractions of different assets

Plus, fractional owners get other special privileges like access to exclusive amenities, potential tax benefits, and the reward of capital appreciation. These extra perks heighten fractional ownership’s overall appeal as an investment.

Pro Tip: Before entering any fractional ownership agreement, be sure to carefully review all legal paperwork and consult a financial advisor who is an expert in this field. This makes sure that you understand your rights, duties, and all the potential risks linked to such investments.

Chartering and rental opportunities

Here’s a breakdown of some key points about chartering and rental opportunities:

Opportunity: Boat Charter.

Description: Cruise the open seas with friends or family on a rented boat.

Opportunity: Car Rental.

Description: Rent a car that fits your needs and travel easily.

Opportunity: Vacation Home Rental.

Description: Get the comforts of home while in a new place.

Description: Gain access to specialized equipment for business operations.

The flexibility of these opportunities means you can try them out before committing. Plus, no need to worry about maintenance or ownership costs.

Pro Tip: Read the terms and conditions before entering any rental or charter agreement, to make sure you know your rights and responsibilities.

Other considerations

To make informed decisions about yacht ownership, you need to consider several other factors. In order to address “Other Considerations,” such as yacht clubs and memberships, location and cruising grounds, as well as lifestyle and time commitment. Let’s delve into these sub-sections to get a complete understanding of these additional aspects.

Yacht clubs and memberships

Yacht clubs provide lots of advantages. These include:

  • Access to top-notch marinas with modern amenities.
  • Chances to cruise with other enthusiasts, creating friendship.
  • Invites to regattas and special events hosted by the club.

Members also get benefits such as:

  • Coaching and training for those who are starting out or want to improve.
  • Social gatherings like themed parties, galas, and networking evenings.
  • Discounts on boat rentals and charters.

Some yacht clubs are special, with a link to maritime history. They are living reminders of the past and help people make connections with others who share their love for sailing. An example is the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes. Founded in 1815 with a royal warrant from King George IV , it hosts races like Cowes Week . Here, sailors from around the world come together to be part of sailing history.

Location and cruising grounds

Sailing on your journey? Greece’s sun-kissed coasts and islands have a rich history and charm. Or feel the Caribbean’s warm embrace, with coral reefs waiting to be explored. Each place offers lots of exciting things for sailing lovers.

Weather, facilities, and rules matter too. In the Mediterranean, ‘Meltemi’ winds can be tricky even for pros. While in Pacific Northwest, rain showers can surprise you.

I sailed across the South Pacific and found French Polynesia. Crystal-clear lagoons and vibrant marine life filled me with wonder. A pod of playful dolphins left me breathless. There are so many wonders to explore in the seas!

Picking a place for sailing is hard, but it’s worth it. Let the wind take you to a unique adventure.

Lifestyle and time commitment

Leading a fulfilling life and managing time well are essential when considering any commitment. There are several factors to keep in mind that can affect your experience. Here’s what to consider:

  • Flexibility is key: Before you commit, think about if the lifestyle and time needs match your flexibility. Some require more rigid schedules, while others have more freedom. Knowing your availability and likes helps make sure it’s a good fit.
  • Prioritization is important: Everyone has unique priorities. Check how the commitment matches your other obligations and goals. Prioritizing activities by importance and impact helps you use time wisely and avoid feeling overwhelmed.
  • Mindful self-care: Commitments can be great, but don’t forget to take care of yourself. Make sure you have time for rest, relaxation, and renewal. Self-care practices can help you be productive and stay well.

Remember, everyone’s lifestyle and time management needs are different. Some thrive with structure, others with more flexibility. Find what works for you.

When considering commitments, find people or mentors who have dealt with them before. This can give you helpful insights for making the best lifestyle choices.

To manage lifestyle and time commitments:

  • Prioritize tasks, deciding which are essential and which are lower priority.
  • Establish boundaries and learn to say no when needed. This helps protect your time and stops overcommitment.
  • Use time management techniques and tools. Calendars, planners, and apps can help you schedule, remember, and track progress.

Owning a yacht is an indulgence requiring thought. Let’s recap the principal points of this article:

  • Acquiring a yacht has initial expenses like the purchase cost, taxes, and registrations.
  • Maintenance and repairs can be costly, from regular cleaning to engine work and hull upkeep.
  • Berth fees depend on the marina and location.
  • Insurance coverage is essential for yachts.

Also, owning a yacht lets you experience unique leisure and exploration. Contrastingly, chartering or fractional ownership may be better for those not wanting a full financial commitment.

  • Look for dealers with good prices.
  • Think about joining yacht clubs or shared ownership.

charter business

By Sophie Lorre — 2 Sep 2021

charter boat   grow your business

Updated April 2023 – Running your own charter boat, fishing, or yacht business? You’re living the dream of many as you spend your days by the water. But growing sustainably within the charter industry can be a unique challenge. How should you invest in marketing – and how do you identify promising areas for growth?

Whether you offer charter fishing trips or private yacht cruises, here’s the guide on how to run a charter boat business while focusing your efforts and scaling up with smooth sailing.

So, you’ve launched your charter boat business. What now?

When it comes to increasing sales in the travel industry , most charter businesses will set aside an ongoing budget to cover various areas that are key to growth. This includes:

  • A professional website with 24/7 online reservation service capabilities
  • An effective guest management solution
  • Reseller relationships with local travel agents and popular online travel agencies (OTAs) such as TripAdvisor, RedBalloon, and Adrenaline
  • Social media and website updates to grow organic engagement with followers
  • Marketing across channels such as social media, paid search, radio, and print
  • Capital outlays in new guest experiences or infrastructure where relevant
  • Follow-up marketing after the guest experience, and more.

While every business is different, many operators allocate anywhere from 5-10% and upwards of revenue towards their growth and marketing strategies. As time goes on, it becomes easier to gauge and grow the best returns on investment.

Marketing tips for charter boat operators

owning a charter boat business

1. Find your niche

Who would be most interested in your charter or boat services? Understanding where your business sits within the market is essential to successful growth. Make the most of your booking system analytics , particularly when integrated with Google Analytics, to identify your charter business referral sources and potential new markets. For example, if you’re noticing:

  • More family bookings, you might create and market family-friendly packages around key holidays and events.
  • A growing local market, you might set up a loyalty program for repeat bookings.
  • Google Analytics tells you your customers’ interests include gourmet food, you might offer treats from local providers on your charters.

2. Create a strong online presence

Charter companies use a raft of marketing measures, including:

  • Search engine optimization (SEO) to encourage organic website traffic
  • Connecting with the OTAs that are widely popular, such as TripAdvisor and RedBalloon
  • Paid search or social media advertising, and more.

It’s wise to start small, set a marketing budget, and continually refine your campaigns based on results. Be sure to build a marketing calendar of seasonal dates when charters might be important to your customers, so you can promote around high-demand dates such as Boxing Day, Easter, long weekends, public holidays and New Year’s Eve.

3. Leverage social media

Social media has become an essential tool for increasing sales in the travel industry, and owning a charter boat business is no exception. With the majority of people using social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram , and Twitter, it is imperative for charter boat operators to establish a strong online presence to attract potential customers.

Using social media platforms, charter boat operators can showcase their boats, services, and the beautiful destinations they operate in. By doing so, they can reach a wider audience and attract customers who may not have been aware of their business otherwise. Additionally, social media provides a platform for operators to engage with their customers, respond to inquiries, share valuable information about their services, and can even be used as another channel for bookings .

4. Develop a referral program

Networks can be essential for growth, and few charter businesses go it alone these days. Outside of other charter or boat operators, some of the most valuable partnerships you can forge are with resellers: whether this be local travel agents, online travel agencies (OTAs), or both. If you want to connect with key resellers and offer live availability for 24/7 bookings, Rezdy Marketplace is ideal.

Other partnerships might include working with restaurants, dive clubs, photographers, and other local businesses, to drive cross-referrals and enhance your customer experiences.

5. Respond to inquiries promptly

As a growing charter boat business, responding to inquiries promptly is crucial to building a positive reputation and establishing trust with potential customers. In the travel industry, customers are often looking to book experiences quickly and efficiently, and delayed responses can lead to frustration and missed opportunities.

By responding to inquiries promptly, charter boat operators demonstrate their commitment to customer service and create a positive first impression. Quick responses also provide an opportunity to engage with potential customers and answer any questions they may have about the business or services offered.

6. Offer personalized experiences

As a growing charter business, offering personalized experiences can be a key factor in attracting and retaining customers. While the beauty of a charter boat experience lies in the stunning scenery and activities offered, it is the personal touch that sets one business apart from another.

Personalization allows charter boat operators to tailor their services to the individual needs and preferences of their customers. This may involve customizing itineraries, offering unique experiences, or catering to specific dietary requirements. By doing so, charter boat operators can create a more memorable and enjoyable experience for their customers, which can result in positive reviews, repeat business, and referrals.

7. Ensure safety and comfort

As a growing charter boat business, ensuring comfort and safety for passengers should be a top priority. A comfortable and safe experience is essential to creating positive word-of-mouth recommendations, building a loyal customer base, and ultimately, growing the business.

Comfortable accommodations are a key component of a charter boat experience. Passengers should feel relaxed and at ease during their time on the boat. This may involve providing comfortable seating, clean restrooms, and amenities such as food and drink. In addition to providing comfortable accommodations, ensuring the safety of passengers is equally important. Charter boat operators should take measures to prevent accidents and emergencies, such as conducting regular safety checks, implementing emergency procedures, and creating liability waivers .

8. Encourage customer feedback

Customer reviews are another invaluable source of insights, highlighting both strengths and weaknesses. Understanding your customer journey can help you optimize the entire customer experience: from initial awareness to online booking, to follow-up messaging.

Managing operations for charter boat operators

9. Maintain equipment regularly

Boats and equipment are essential assets that enable operators to provide a safe and comfortable experience for passengers. Regular maintenance ensures that boats and equipment are in good condition, reducing the risk of breakdowns, accidents, and delays.

To maintain boats and equipment, operators should establish a regular maintenance schedule that includes routine inspections, cleaning, and repairs. This may involve tasks such as checking the engine, changing the oil, replacing worn-out parts, and cleaning the interior and exterior of the boat.

10. Understand safety regulations

Safety regulations are put in place to protect passengers and crew members, and failure to comply with them can result in fines, legal action, and reputational damage.

Operators should take the time to understand and comply with all relevant safety regulations, which may include local, state, and federal regulations. These regulations may cover a wide range of areas, including crew training, emergency preparedness, passenger capacity, and equipment safety.

For example, the U.S. Coast Guard sets regulations for commercial vessels, including charter boats. These regulations cover everything from required safety equipment to crew training and qualifications. Operators must also comply with environmental regulations, such as those governing fuel spills and waste disposal.

11. Streamline your operations

As the business grows and expands, operators need to ensure that their operations are efficient and effective, allowing them to meet customer demand and maximize profits.

Streamlining operations can involve a variety of strategies, including automating processes, optimizing schedules, and utilizing technology. For example, operators may invest in a booking system such as Rezdy that allows customers to easily book and pay for trips online, reducing the need for manual booking processes.

Apart from your bookings, you also need to streamline your internal operations. Rezdy offers automatic manifest updates to ensure a smooth internal operation so that the entire time is informed of the latest booking updates. Furthermore, some operators may choose to use additional services for effective team communication such as Trello and Asana, along with  Asana alternatives  like Monday.com.

12. Develop a pricing strategy

A well-designed pricing strategy can help operators maximize revenue while also ensuring that customers are satisfied with the value they receive.

When developing a pricing strategy, operators should consider a variety of factors, including the costs of running a charter boat business, competitive pricing, and customer demand. They should also consider the value proposition of their services, taking into account factors such as the quality of the boat and equipment, the expertise of the crew, and the level of customer service provided.

Thank customers for their positive feedback and address any concerns raised in negative reviews.

Here are the most important things to know when you are starting your charter boat business:

  • Location — Choose a location that’s close to the ocean, sea, lake, or river. Also, make sure the conditions of these water bodies match the offers you are listing such as fishing, sightseeing, or watersports.
  • Buy boats — Your charter business will need different types of boats. Decide if you want to invest in new or used boats, and consider different financing options, such as loans and leases tailored to maritime assets . You can usually find the best deals from boat dealers, boat shows, private sellers, and auctions.
  • Licenses and certificates — In many places, operating a charter boat requires a boating license or a more specialized captain’s license such as a USCG Captain’s License . If your charter operates in navigable waters, it might need to be inspected and certified by the Coast Guard or equivalent authority. If your charter involves fishing, you may need a license to fish in those waters, and your customers might also need to obtain fishing licenses.
  • Niche — Stand out with specialized offers such as fishing charters, eco-tours, luxury cruises, adventure sports, event hosting, or cultural tours.
  • Register your business — A limited liability company (LLC) is the best legal structure for new businesses because it is fast and simple. Form your business immediately using ZenBusiness LLC formation service or hire one of the best LLC services on the market.
  • Insurance — Make sure you have liability insurance, hull insurance, and other policies to protect your business.
  • Legal business aspects — Register for taxes, open a business bank account, and get an EIN .
  • Maintenance — Set up a routine maintenance schedule, perform regular inspections, and use software to track all maintenance activities and repairs.

Step 2: hone your idea.

Now that you know what’s involved in starting a charter boat business, it’s a good idea to hone your concept in preparation to enter a competitive market.

Choose a Location for a Charter Boat Business

When selecting a location for your charter boat business, it’s essential to weigh various factors:

  • Market demand — Research the local and tourist demand for charter boat services in potential locations. Look for areas with a high influx of tourists, especially those interested in activities like fishing, sightseeing, or water sports.
  • Access to water bodies — The proximity to and accessibility of suitable water bodies (oceans, lakes, rivers) is crucial. Consider the types of activities your charter will offer and choose a location that supports these activities (e.g., deep-sea fishing requires access to the ocean).
  • Marina facilities — Evaluate the quality of marina facilities. Good mooring spots, maintenance services, fueling stations, and customer amenities are essential for the smooth operation of your business.
  • Weather and seasonality — Consider the climate and weather patterns. Areas with longer seasons of good weather can potentially offer more business days. However, also prepare for off-season business strategies.
  • Customer accessibility — Look at how easy it is for customers to reach your location. Proximity to tourist hotspots, hotels, and transport hubs can be advantageous.
  • Economic stability — The economic stability of the location can impact your business. Thriving economic areas with higher disposable incomes can be more lucrative.
  • Local partnerships and networking — Explore potential partnerships with local businesses such as hotels, travel agencies, and event planners. These partnerships can provide a steady stream of customers.
  • Scenic appeal and unique offerings — Areas with natural beauty or unique marine life can attract more customers. Consider what unique features your location can offer that others can’t.
  • Safety and security — Ensure the location is safe for customers and your business. This includes both on-water safety and the general safety of the area.

Why? Identify an Opportunity

Research charter boat businesses in your area to examine their services, price points, and customer reviews. You’re looking for a market gap to fill. For instance, maybe the market is missing a charter boat business that offers dinner cruises or snorkeling and diving. A location with fewer existing charter services might offer more opportunities but consider if the low competition is due to poor demand.

grow your own yacht

You might consider targeting a niche market by specializing in a certain aspect of your industry, such as fishing or late night party cruises.

Your services will depend on the type of charters you decide to offer. Those can be fishing charters , diving charters, late-night cruises, local boat tours, and more. You can also offer food and drinks.

Read our interview with the founders of Catamaran Guru to gain invaluable insights on building a successful yacht sales and charter management business.

How Much Should You Charge for Charter Boats?

The average price for a day charter is $700. You should check prices in your area to make sure that you’re competitive. You should aim for a profit margin of about 70%. Once you know your costs, you can use our profit margin calculator to determine your markup and final price points. Remember that the prices you use at launch should be subject to change if warranted by the market.

Who? Identify Your Target Market

Your target market will be broad, mainly tourists. You should spread out your marketing to include sites like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook.

Step 3: Brainstorm a Charter Boat Business Name

Here are some ideas for brainstorming your business name:

  • Short, unique, and catchy names tend to stand out
  • Names that are easy to say and spell tend to do better
  • Name should be relevant to your product or service offerings
  • Ask around — family, friends, colleagues, social media — for suggestions
  • Including keywords, such as “charter boating” or “charter fishing,” boosts SEO
  • Name should allow for expansion, for example, “High Seas Charter Services” over “Scuba Diving Charters”
  • A location-based name can help establish a strong connection with your local community and help with the SEO, but might hinder future expansion

Discover over 310 unique charter boat business name ideas here . If you want your business name to include specific keywords, you can also use our charter boat business name generator. Just type in a few keywords, hit Generate, and you’ll have dozens of suggestions at your fingertips.

Once you’ve got a list of potential names, visit the US Patent and Trademark Office website to make sure they are available for registration and check the availability of related domain names using our Domain Name Search tool. Using “.com” or “.org” sharply increases credibility, so it’s best to focus on these.

Find a Domain

Powered by GoDaddy.com

Finally, make your choice among the names that pass this screening and go ahead with domain registration and social media account creation. Your business name is one of the key differentiators that sets your business apart. Once you pick your company name and start with the branding, it is hard to change the business name. Therefore, it’s important to carefully consider your choice before you start a business entity.

Step 4: Create a Charter Boat Business Plan

Here are the key components of a business plan:

what to include in a business plan

  • Executive summary — A brief overview highlighting the key points of the charter boat business plan, summarizing its objectives and potential
  • Business overview — Detailed information about the charter boat business, including its mission, vision, and the problem it aims to solve in the market
  • Product and services — Clearly defined offerings, specifying the types of charter boat services, packages, and any additional amenities provided
  • Market analysis — An examination of the target market, identifying customer needs, market trends, and potential growth opportunities for the charter boat business
  • Competitive analysis — Evaluation of competitors in the charter boat industry, highlighting strengths and weaknesses to position the business effectively in the market
  • Sales and marketing — Strategies for promoting and selling charter boat services, including pricing, advertising, and promotional activities to attract customers
  • Management team — Introduction of the key individuals responsible for running the charter boat business, emphasizing their expertise and roles
  • Operations plan — Details on how the business will operate, covering logistics, maintenance, safety protocols, and any partnerships necessary for smooth operations
  • Financial plan — Projections of the charter boat business’s financial performance, including revenue forecasts, expense estimates, and break-even analysis
  • Appendix — Supplementary materials, such as charts, graphs, or additional documentation, supporting, and enhancing the information presented in the charter boat business plan

If you’ve never created a business plan, it can be an intimidating task. You might consider hiring a business plan specialist to create a top-notch business plan for you.

Step 5: Register Your Business

Registering your business is an absolutely crucial step — it’s the prerequisite to paying taxes, raising capital, opening a bank account, and other guideposts on the road to getting a business up and running.

Plus, registration is exciting because it makes the entire process official. Once it’s complete, you’ll have your own business!

Choose Where to Register Your Company

Your business location is important because it can affect taxes, legal requirements, and revenue. Most people will register their business in the state where they live, but if you’re planning to expand, you might consider looking elsewhere, as some states could offer real advantages when it comes to charter boat businesses.

If you’re willing to move, you could really maximize your business! Keep in mind that it’s relatively easy to transfer your business to another state.

Choose Your Business Structure

Business entities come in several varieties, each with its pros and cons. The legal structure you choose for your charter boat business will shape your taxes, personal liability, and business registration requirements, so choose wisely.

Here are the main options:

types of business structures

  • Sole proprietorship — The most common structure for small businesses makes no legal distinction between company and owner. All income goes to the owner, who’s also liable for any debts, losses, or liabilities incurred by the business. The owner pays taxes on business income on his or her personal tax return.
  • General partnership — Similar to a sole proprietorship, but for two or more people. Again, owners keep the profits and are liable for losses. The partners pay taxes on their share of business income on their personal tax returns.
  • Limited Liability Company (LLC) — Combines the characteristics of corporations with those of sole proprietorships or partnerships. Again, the owners are not personally liable for debts.
  • C Corporation — Under this structure, the business is a distinct legal entity, and the owner or owners are not personally liable for its debts. Owners take profits through shareholder dividends rather than directly. The corporation pays taxes, and owners pay taxes on their dividends, which is sometimes referred to as double taxation.
  • S Corporation — This refers to the tax classification of the business but is not a business entity. Either a corporation or an LLC can elect to be an S Corp for tax status. Here, income is passed through directly to shareholders, who pay taxes on their share of business income on their personal tax returns.

We recommend that new business owners choose LLC as it offers liability protection and pass-through taxation while being simpler to form than a corporation. You can form an LLC in as little as five minutes using an online LLC formation service. They will check that your business name is available before filing, submit your articles of organization , and answer any questions you might have.

Step 6: Register for Taxes

The final step before you’re able to pay taxes is getting an Employer Identification Number or EIN. You can file for your EIN online or by mail/fax. Visit the IRS website to learn more. Keep in mind that, if you’ve chosen to be a sole proprietorship, you can simply use your social security number as your EIN.

Once you have your EIN, you’ll need to choose your tax year. Financially speaking, your business will operate in a calendar year (January–December) or a fiscal year, a 12-month period that can start in any month. This will determine your tax cycle, while your business structure will determine which taxes you’ll pay.

grow your own yacht

The IRS website also offers a  tax-payers checklist , and taxes can be filed online.

It is important to consult an accountant or other professional to help you with taxes to ensure you’re completing them correctly.

Step 7: Fund Your Business

Securing financing is your next step, and there are plenty of ways to raise capital:

types of business financing

  • Bank loans — This is the most common method, but getting approved requires a rock-solid business plan and a strong credit history.
  • SBA-guaranteed loans — The Small Business Administration can act as a guarantor, helping gain that elusive bank approval via an SBA-guaranteed loan .
  • Government grants — A handful of financial assistance programs help fund entrepreneurs. Visit Grants.gov to learn which might work for you.
  • Friends and family — Reach out to friends and family to provide a business loan or investment in your concept. It’s a good idea to have legal advice when doing so because SEC regulations apply.
  • Crowdfunding — Websites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo offer increasingly popular low-risk options in which donors fund your vision. Entrepreneurial crowdfunding sites like Fundable and WeFunder enable multiple investors to fund your business.
  • Personal — Self-fund your business via your savings or the sale of property or other assets.

Bank and SBA loans are probably the best options, other than friends and family, for funding a charter boat business. You might also try crowdfunding if you have an innovative concept.

Step 8: Apply for Licenses and Permits

Starting a charter boat business requires obtaining a number of licenses and permits from local, state, and federal governments.

The US Coast Guard requires boat owners who run a charter to have a captain’s license. You can find information on getting this license with Maritime Professional Training . You may also need a fishing guide license.

Federal regulations, licenses, and permits associated with starting your business include doing business as (DBA), health licenses and permits from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration ( OSHA ), trademarks, copyrights, patents, and other intellectual properties, as well as industry-specific licenses and permits.

You may also need state-level and local county or city-based licenses and permits. This includes licenses, safety regulations, fishing limits, and environmental guidelines. The license requirements and how to obtain them vary, so check the websites of your state, city, and county governments or contact the appropriate person to learn more.

You could also check this SBA guide for your state’s requirements, but we recommend using MyCorporation’s Business License Compliance Package . They will research the exact forms you need for your business and state and provide them to ensure you’re fully compliant.

This is not a step to be taken lightly, as failing to comply with legal requirements can result in hefty penalties.

If you feel overwhelmed by this step or don’t know how to begin, it might be a good idea to hire a professional to help you check all the legal boxes.

Step 9: Open a Business Bank Account

Before you start making money, you’ll need a place to keep it, and that requires opening a bank account .

Keeping your business finances separate from your personal account makes it easy to file taxes and track your company’s income, so it’s worth doing even if you’re running your charter boat business as a sole proprietorship. Opening a business bank account is quite simple and similar to opening a personal one. Most major banks offer accounts tailored for businesses — just inquire at your preferred bank to learn about their rates and features.

Banks vary in terms of offerings, so it’s a good idea to examine your options and select the best plan for you. Once you choose your bank, bring in your EIN (or Social Security Number if you decide on a sole proprietorship), articles of incorporation, and other legal documents and open your new account.

Step 10: Get Business Insurance

Business insurance is an area that often gets overlooked, yet it can be vital to your success as an entrepreneur. Insurance protects you from unexpected events that can have a devastating impact on your business.

Here are some types of insurance to consider:

types of business insurance

  • General liability — The most comprehensive type of insurance, acting as a catch-all for many business elements that require coverage. If you get just one kind of insurance, this is it. It even protects against bodily injury and property damage.
  • Business property — Provides coverage for your equipment and supplies.
  • Equipment breakdown insurance — Covers the cost of replacing or repairing equipment that has broken due to mechanical issues.
  • Worker’s compensation — Provides compensation to employees injured on the job.
  • Property — Covers your physical space, whether it is a cart, storefront, or office.
  • Commercial auto — Protection for your company-owned vehicle.
  • Professional liability — Protects against claims from a client who says they suffered a loss due to an error or omission in your work.
  • Business owner’s policy (BOP) — This is an insurance plan that acts as an all-in-one insurance policy, a combination of the above insurance types.

Step 11: Prepare to Launch

As opening day nears, prepare for launch by reviewing and improving some key elements of your business.

Essential Software and Tools

Being an entrepreneur often means wearing many hats, from marketing to sales to accounting, which can be overwhelming. Fortunately, many websites and digital tools are available to help simplify many business tasks.

You may want to use industry-specific software, such as Sedna , Starboard Suite , or Stellar , to manage your bookings, scheduling, invoicing, and payments.

  • Popular web-based accounting programs for smaller businesses include Quickbooks , FreshBooks , and Xero .
  • If you’re unfamiliar with basic accounting, you may want to hire a professional, especially as you begin. The consequences of filing incorrect tax documents can be harsh, so accuracy is crucial.

Develop Your Website

Website development is crucial because your site is your online presence and needs to convince prospective clients of your expertise and professionalism.

You can create your own website using website builders . This route is very affordable, but figuring out how to build a website can be time-consuming. If you lack tech savvy, you can hire a web designer or developer to create a custom website for your business.

However, people are unlikely to find your website unless you follow Search Engine Optimization ( SEO ) practices. These are steps that help pages rank higher in the results of top search engines like Google.

Here are some powerful marketing strategies for your future business:

  • Local SEO — Optimize your website to showcase your charter services, boats, and unique experiences, improving visibility in search results for charter-related terms. Regularly update your Google My Business and Yelp profiles to strengthen your local search presence.
  • Professional branding — Ensure your branding captures the essence of adventure, luxury, or relaxation offered by your charters, reflected in everything from your logo to boat decor.
  • Direct outreach — Partner with local hotels, travel agencies, and tourism boards to integrate your charters into travel packages and exclusive offers.
  • Social media engagement — Use Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube to share captivating images and videos of your trips, highlighting customer experiences and the beauty of the destinations.
  • Sea adventures blog — Publish posts about local marine life, fishing tips, and scenic routes to attract enthusiasts and inform potential customers.
  • Video tours and guides — Create engaging video content that provides virtual tours of your vessels and insights into the charter experience.
  • Open boat days — Organize events where prospective clients can tour your boats, meet the crew, and learn about the services offered.
  • Local event participation — Showcase your services at waterfront festivals, boat shows, and fishing tournaments to connect with the community and attract customers.
  • Business collaborations — Form referral partnerships with local businesses, like seaside restaurants or hotels, to offer enhanced packages.
  • Loyalty rewards program — Develop a rewards program offering discounts or upgrades to frequent customers to foster loyalty and encourage repeat visits.
  • Targeted digital advertising — Place ads on travel and tourism platforms and local online boards to specifically target individuals interested in charter services.

Focus on USPs

unique selling proposition

Unique selling propositions, or USPs, are the characteristics of a product or service that set it apart from the competition. Today’s customers are inundated with buying options, so you’ll have a real advantage if they can quickly grasp how your charter boat business meets their needs or wishes. It’s wise to do all you can to ensure your USPs stand out on your website and in your marketing and promotional materials, stimulating buyer desire.

Global pizza chain Domino’s is renowned for its USP: “Hot pizza in 30 minutes or less, guaranteed.” Signature USPs for your charter boat business could be:

  • Fishing day trips to reel in the big one!
  • Dinner cruises to view the sunset in style
  • Tour the local scenery while relaxing on a luxury boat

You may not like to network or use personal connections for business gain, but your personal and professional networks likely offer considerable untapped business potential. Maybe that Facebook friend you met in college is now running a charter boat business, or a LinkedIn contact of yours is connected to dozens of potential clients. Maybe your cousin or neighbor has been working in boats for years and can offer invaluable insight and industry connections.

The possibilities are endless, so it’s a good idea to review your personal and professional networks and reach out to those with possible links to or interest in boating. You’ll probably generate new customers or find companies with which you could establish a partnership.

Step 12: Build Your Team

If you’re starting out small from a home office, you may not need any employees. But as your business grows, you will likely need workers to fill various roles. Potential positions for a charter boat business include:

  • Charter boat drivers — driving on boat trips
  • General manager — scheduling, accounting
  • Marketing lead — SEO strategies, social media

At some point, you may need to hire all of these positions or simply a few, depending on the size and needs of your business. You might also hire multiple workers for a single role or a single worker for multiple roles, again depending on need. Free-of-charge methods to recruit employees include posting ads on popular platforms such as LinkedIn, Facebook, or Jobs.com. You might also consider a premium recruitment option, such as advertising on Indeed , Glassdoor , or ZipRecruiter . Further, if you have the resources, you could consider hiring a recruitment agency to help you find talent.

Step 13: Run a Charter Boat Business — Start Making Money!

What could be more fun than being the captain of your own ship and sharing the joy with your customers? You can make good money while spending your time in the sun on the water. You’ll need to make an investment to get started, but you’ll be stepping into an industry that’s growing fast. You’ve got the knowledge you need, so now it’s time to go ahead and launch your boat and your successful new business.

Sea Occupation: Steps To Starting Your Own Charter Boat Business

  • Business Ideas & Tips
  • Finance Your Business
  • Market Your Business
  • Keep Your Business Compliant

charter boat

What is a charter boat if you can’t enjoy it at sea and get paid for it at the same time? Read this boater’s guide to starting your own charter business.

1.4 billion people  participated in international tourism in 2018. That massive number was reached two years earlier than experts had predicted.

With the rise of tourism has come a lot of money flowing into tourism-targeted businesses. One of the biggest beneficiaries of that influx of cash has been the boating industry.

Think about it… If tourists are traveling to warm-weather destinations, what’s one of the top things that they’ll want to do? Get in the water!

That leads many tourists to ask “What is a charter boat?” and eventually book one’s services.

If you’d like to cash in on tourism-driven charter boat demand, keep reading. Below, we step prospective boat entrepreneurs through broad steps on how to start their own boating business!

1. Ensure That Your Market Is Right

If you live in an area where the weather is bad for nine months out of the year, a charter boat business isn’t going to be viable. The same is true if you don’t get any tourists in your area.

There are, of course, exceptions to this rule.

For example, boats are chartered in Antarctica to see cold-weather features like glaciers. Boats are also chartered in non-tourist towns if boat travel is required to get to certain areas where locals work or collect resources.

Bottom line: Make sure that your area stands a reasonable chance of getting customers that are interested in boat travel for the majority of the year before proceeding.

2. Write a Business Plan

Suspecting that you can run a successful charter boat business isn’t the same as actually running one successfully. To make sure that your suspicions are reasonably accurate, you’ll need to draw up a business plan.

Your business plan should include things like all of the expenses that are involved with running a charter boat business (gas, insurance, boat payment, maintenance, etc.) and how much you’ll need to charge per hour in order to offset those expenses and claim a profit. You’ll also want to survey other boat businesses in the area to determine what they’re charging, how much business they’re doing and what you can reasonably expect.

Do not skip creating a business plan as you launch your venture. A little bit of homework can save you a whole lot of money and heartache down the line.

3. Decide on the Style of Your Boat

There are a lot of different charter boats out there. Which one you choose is going to depend on what your projected customer looks like and how much money you have.

If you think that the majority of your customers are going to be people going out on fishing trips, you’ll want to make sure your boat has features like fishing rails, tanks for caught fish and other fishing necessities. If your intention is to charter 100+ people that want to enjoy corporate outings, your boat should be outfitted with sprawling decks and a commercial kitchen.

Understand what your core customer’s needs/wants are and do everything that you can to accommodate those preferences with your boat.

4. Weigh Buying vs Leasing

Your boat payment is going to be one of the most expensive aspects of your business. You’ll have to determine if it makes more sense financially to rent or buy your vessel.

Boat loans  can be taken out to buy a boat which should prove to be cheaper and more flexible than leasing over the lifespan of your business. On the other hand, leasing allows you to run your business with a lower commitment since you don’t actually own your boat. It could also get you into a nicer vessel than you could afford to buy.

5. Get Your Business Registered With Tax Authorities

Like any small business, before you’re ready to set sail, you’ll have to let Uncle Sam know what your intentions are. The best way to do that is to head over to the IRS website and register your company.

Starting out, you could register your charter boat business as a sole-proprietorship which is the simplest form of business classification. Be aware that sole-proprietorships do present certain liabilities if you’re sued. For added protection, talk to a business lawyer or your accountant about how to register as an LLC and if that’s an appropriate course of action. In addition by choosing the best registered agent you can have a way to receive very important notifications for your business while staying legally compliant.

6. Pick a Dock

With your company registered and your boat purchase in-progress, you’ll want to have a dock picked out where you can keep your boat and pick up passengers. To ensure that you’re able to attract as many customers as possible, you’ll want to select a dock that’s liable to attract tourists. That might mean paying a little bit more but believe us when we say that the extra money is well worth the investment.

Some docks will offer discounted rates if you lease long-term as opposed to renting a slip month to month so be sure to inquire about special rates before committing to anything.

7. Start Marketing

You’ve done the hard stuff in getting your boat, dock, and business ready to set sail. Now it’s time to start attracting customers through marketing .

There are a ton of ways that you can let customers know you’re open for business. You could take out Facebook ads, put up posters around your dock, write blog posts that answer common questions like “What is a charter boat?”, “How much do charter boats cost?” and more.

Just be sure that building a website and allowing people to book your services online is part of your marketing to-do list. A charter boat company without a website in today’s world is one that’s not going to stay afloat for long.

What Is a Charter Boat Business’s Value to Your Life? That’s for You to Decide!

You now know how to launch a charter boat business. With that education in place, ask yourself, what is a charter boat business’s value to your life?

If you think that running a boat business could make you happier and more financially stable, set sail! If you’re not sure, keep your aspirations anchored and keep thinking.

6 Ways to Market, Protect & Grow your Boat Charter Business

6 Ways to Market, Protect & Grow your Boat Charter Business

There is never a shortage of tourists who want to rent boats or yachts. Whether they want to explore the ocean, fish, or just rent the boat for a special event, they are willing to pay a pretty penny for such services. This is why it could be a smart idea to start your own boat charter business. However, just like any other business field, it can be hard to set yourself apart from the competition and increase your profits, not to mention that the boat chartering business comes with its own set of risks. Understandably, you might feel like you are way in over your head, but no need to fret over it.

We’ve got you covered with the following 6 tips that will help you grow, market, and protect your boat charter company.

1. Discover Your Niche

First things first, the best way to set yourself apart from other boat chartering companies is to find your niche. You might think that all boat charter businesses have the same niche, but this could not be further from the truth. While some companies focus more on renting their boats for fishing trips or provide captains for  fishing charters near Orlando , others offer more tourist-oriented services like dolphin-watching excursions. Moreover, you can also rent your boat for the soon-to-be-wed couples who want to have a unique wedding and enjoy the elegant flair your company can add to their special day. In any case, figuring out the area you excel at is key to kick-starting your business and attracting customers.

2. Follow Safety Regulations

Despite our best efforts, accidents happen all the time. Notably, boating accidents are always on the rise, and this is why you need to ensure that your business values its customers’ and employees’ safety. So, start with fixing your boat and upgrading it, making sure that it is 100% functional and reliable. The Texas-based offshore injury attorneys at https://www.treybartonlaw.com/personal-injury/houston-offshore-injury-attorney/ point out that you are completely responsible for any injuries that happen to your boat due to negligence. They add that you need to make sure that your equipment is safe and that your crew is adequately trained. Moreover, you can get insurance to stay on the safe side. This way, if worse comes to worst and an accident takes place, the insurance company can cover some of the damage.

3. Upgrade Your Boat

If your boat has seen better days, then chances are that you will not attract many customers. The more luxurious and functional your boat is, the more income your business can generate. A simple way of upgrading your boat is to hire a crew to operate it because boats that come with professional crews usually have higher hourly rates, which can help you boost your profits. Moreover, think of expanding your business, meaning that you should consider purchasing more boats and yachts. It might cost you a bit up front, but it is a sure-fire way to expand your company.

4. Forge Strong Partnerships

6 Ways to Market, Protect & Grow your Boat Charter Business

Although you can skip this step, flying solo is not always the best option in today’s business world. Due to the current market disruptions, you have to partner with other companies that work in your field. For example, you can look for businesses that offer diving lessons in your area and partner with them. Similarly, you can look for professional photographers who are willing to lend you their services if you want to offer your clients more inclusive packages.

5. Set Up a Business Website

This tried and true marketing strategy is sure to make clients flock to your business. If you want to expand your reach and customer base, you must create a business website through which your customers can book their trips. To do this, you can hire a professional to make your website look sleek. This will help you utilize effective SEO strategies and boost your website’s ranking. Also, do not forget to make the website mobile-friendly , as many people use their smartphones to browse the internet nowadays.

6. Have a Strong Online Presence

If you want to grow your boat charter business , creating a professional-looking website is not enough. Currently, most people rely on social media platforms to find services. So, you can harness the power of social media websites by creating business profiles for your company on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat. You also need to post attractive pictures of your boats and yachts to entice more customers to hire your services.

Starting a boat charter business can be a great idea if you are a seafarer. Yet, you need to work hard to expand your company and ensure a steady flow of income. By following the 6 tips above, you can grow and protect your company without any undue effort. Just remember to follow your state’s safety regulations if you want to offer your clients the best possible experience.

Design Your Own Yacht

grow your own yacht

When designing your own yacht, you have a few options, from commissioning a custom new build yacht construction project through to refitting an existing yacht. When deciding which route to take, it’s helpful to know some of the pros and cons of each approach.

grow your own yacht

Option 1: The deluxe, no-holds-barred, fully custom yacht.

Experienced yacht owners and charterers often dream of one thing: the day they design their own yacht from scratch. A fully custom new build project is the pinnacle of the yacht ownership experience, as it allows you control over every aspect of your yacht’s design, from technical details like hull form and noise-dulling technology, right through to you designing that split-level master stateroom with private terrace or beach club with spa. Designing a fully custom yacht ensures that your yacht is the realization of every yachting dream, tailored perfectly to how you use your yacht. However when designing your own yacht, this luxurious bespoke option comes at a price, and the build time tends to be longer than with semi-custom models.

grow your own yacht

Option 2: The freedom and efficiency of a semi-custom yacht.

If you want to design your own yacht, and want to give your input in the design, but want to take advantage of efficiencies in build time and budget, you can opt for a semi-custom design, whereby the yacht’s hull form and design is part of an existing series of yachts. Building on a proven platform, the yacht owner gets to design the yacht’s décor, and depending on the builder, amend parts of the interior layout. The degree of freedom to change elements of the yacht will vary depending on which yacht builder you go with. A semi-custom yacht can have very different décor than other yachts in the same series, but the exterior design (and sometimes interior layout) is clearly part of a series, which will not appeal so much to yacht owners who crave a unique look to their yacht design.

grow your own yacht

Option 3: Buying ‘off the plan’ with a production yacht

This is the quickest and most cost effective way to buy a new yacht, as production yacht builders buy materials in bulk and put their yachts together quickly due to repetition of process. You can often purchase a yacht that is already under construction, meaning that time to delivery is slashed and you can take possession of your yacht much sooner than if you buy a custom yacht. This option has a lot less room for owner input on design, although some décor choices are normally left open.

grow your own yacht

Option 4: Refit an existing yacht

If you’re not in the mood to wait for several years for a brand new yacht to be delivered, refitting an existing yacht is an excellent option that can dramatically change the look of your yacht, while also providing the opportunity to update the engineering and onboard systems. A quality refit with a great design can deliver a ‘like-new’ yacht, and will normally significantly add to the resale value and charter potential of your yacht. However, major yard periods run the risk of going over time and over budget, so planning your yard period well is imperative.

Deciding between fully custom, semi-custom, production yacht and refit depends on how you use your yacht and how much input you want on the design process. If you would like to design your own yacht and want to discuss these different options in more detail, please contact our yacht construction team directly by sending us a message by using the form on the right, or give us a call by using the phone numbers listed in the footer of this page.

How to Launch Your Yacht Brokerage: A Step-by-Step Guide

Bill Michaels

Introduction

Launching a yacht brokerage business doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With the right knowledge and a well-thought out plan, you can be up and running in no time. Start by researching the yacht industry, obtaining the necessary licenses, and creating a sound business plan.

Location, and website setup will follow, and you’ll be able to build a client base and market your business. With a little forethought and dedication, you’ll be well on your way to success.

Overview of Yacht Brokerage as a Business

Yacht brokerage businesses act as intermediaries between buyers and sellers of yachts. As a broker, you will work with both parties to negotiate a suitable sale price and complete the transaction. The money you make comes from the commission you earn on each successful sale.

To get started, you will need to do some research in the yacht industry, get licensed, and develop a business plan.

You’ll also need to secure financing, find a business location, create a website, and build a client base. Once you’ve got your business up and running, you can focus on marketing and managing it for success.

It’s important to remember that running a successful yacht brokerage requires dedication and hard work. You’ll need to stay up to date with trends in the industry, have an eye for detail, be a great negotiator, and have excellent customer service skills. You should also have a good understanding of the financial aspects of the business, such as pricing, contracts, and insurance. With the right approach, you can launch and manage a successful yacht brokerage business.

Steps to Starting a Yacht Brokerage

Starting a yacht brokerage business can seem daunting, but it can be done with the right preparation. Begin by researching the yacht industry to get a sense of trends, the current market, and what your competitors are doing. After that, you’ll need to become licensed, create a business plan and secure financing.

Then you’ll need to decide on a business location, create a website, and start to build a client base.

You’ll want to develop a marketing plan to get your name out there. You’ll need to stay organized and on top of your finances in order to manage your business successfully.

This can seem intimidating, but it’s totally doable. Make sure to stay up to date on the latest industry news and trends, as well as your competitors. And don’t forget to use your relationships to help you build your business. Networking is key to making it in the yacht brokerage biz.

Researching the Yacht Industry

It’s important to do your research before launching a yacht brokerage business. That includes researching the yacht industry: what types of boats are popular, what trends exist in the market, and what your competition is like. Knowing this information can help you make informed decisions about what types of boats you should specialize in and what strategies you should use for marketing your business.

It can help you keep up-to-date on the latest industry developments. Researching the yacht industry doesn’t have to be a daunting task.

Start by talking to local boat owners and industry experts, including yacht brokers and boat dealers. Attend boat shows and other industry events, and read up on industry publications. Once you have a better understanding of the industry, you’ll be better equipped to make decisions that are right for your business.

Becoming Licensed

Becoming licensed is an important step to starting your own yacht brokerage business. Yacht brokers are required to hold certain state and federal licenses in order to do business.

Look into the licensing requirements for your state and in the surrounding states in which you plan to do business. It’s important to understand the regulations and make sure you meet all the criteria in order to stay compliant.

It’s also a good idea to invest in any additional educational requirements, such as a boating safety course. This can help you get the necessary certifications and boost your credibility as a broker.

Make sure you research the different courses and certifications available to you and make sure you enroll in the right ones. Be sure to do your due diligence and research the laws and regulations in your state. Make sure you understand what is required of you in order to become a licensed broker and that you are fully compliant with all the rules and regulations. Taking the time to understand these things now can save you a lot of headaches down the line.

Developing a Business Plan

Creating a business plan is an essential step in launching a successful yacht brokerage. It provides the structure and vision that will guide the business and help you stay on track. When developing your plan, be sure to consider your target market, your competitive advantages, and the financials of your business.

You’ll need to make assumptions about the future, such as what the market will look like in five years and how you’ll adjust your business plan if certain conditions arise.

A good business plan should be comprehensive yet concise, and updated regularly. Start by setting SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound) goals and objectives that you can use to track and measure your progress. Include financial projections, marketing plans, and operations plans, as well as an analysis of the competitive environment and legal requirements.

Make sure to include a risk assessment that outlines potential pitfalls that may threaten your business. With a thorough, well-thought-out business plan in hand, you’ll be ready to launch your yacht brokerage!

Securing Financing

When you are starting a yacht brokerage business, it is important to make sure you have the necessary financing. To do this, you should consider seeking out venture capital, angel investors, loans from banks or other financial institutions, and other forms of private equity. Make sure that you have a good understanding of the different types of financing available and how they could benefit your business.

It is important to have a financial plan and budget in place to help you stay on track.

It is also important to research any potential grant programs that are available to you. Many grants are designed to help small businesses, such as yacht brokerages, get off the ground.

You should also explore government loan programs that may help you get the necessary capital for your business. It is important to network with other entrepreneurs and business owners who may be able to provide you with advice or financing.

Reach out to those in the yacht industry who may be able to provide you with guidance or insight into starting a brokerage business. You should consider attending networking events to meet potential investors or lenders. By taking the time to research, network, and explore the different financing options available to you, you can ensure that your yacht brokerage is successfully launched.

Finding a Business Location

Finding the right business location for your yacht brokerage is a critical step. When looking for a spot, consider the size of your business and the amount of space you’ll need to accommodate any staff you plan to hire. Also think about the visibility of the location, its proximity to your target market, and the availability of parking for customers.

Don’t forget to factor in the cost of rent, as you’ll need to make sure it’s within your budget. Once you’ve narrowed down your options, it’s important to take the time to visit and inspect each location you’re considering.

During this stage, pay attention to the condition of the property and its proximity to other local businesses.

You’ll also want to check out the public transportation options and determine if the location will be easy for your customers to access. When it comes to signing a lease, be sure to read the fine print and understand the terms of the agreement before putting pen to paper. If you’re not comfortable negotiating the terms of the lease, you can always enlist the help of a real estate attorney who can make sure you’re getting the best deal.

Creating a Website

Creating a website is an important step in launching your yacht brokerage business. With an up-to-date website, you will have a great way to showcase your services and a platform to reach potential clients.

To create a successful website, start with a good design. Use visuals, such as pictures and videos, to attract attention. Your website should also be easy to navigate, with clear menus and search options.

Make sure the website is optimized for mobile devices.

Once the design is ready, fill the website with content. Include services you offer, contact information, and a blog section. Remember to keep the website updated with fresh content on a regular basis. This will help ensure that your website remains relevant and interesting for potential clients.

Marketing Your Business

Marketing your business is essential for its success. Here are some tips for successful marketing of your yacht brokerage:

Start by developing a good marketing strategy. You’ll want to look into options like social media, email campaigns, and even print advertising. Make sure your message is clear, concise, and focused on the value that your brokerage provides. You’ll want to be sure to have a clear call to action in every piece of marketing material. You should also take advantage of networking opportunities. Whether it’s attending trade shows, joining business associations, or even just meeting with local yacht owners, networking can be one of the most effective ways to grow your business. Don’t be afraid to be proactive and make contact with potential clients. Don’t forget to make use of referrals. Word-of-mouth marketing is one of the most powerful forms of advertising and can be a great way to get your brokerage in front of potential customers. Make sure to thank existing clients for their referrals and offer them incentives like discounts or special offers.

Tips for Successful Yacht Brokerage Management

Successful yacht brokerage management requires careful planning and focus. Start by researching the specific yacht industry to understand the dynamics and competitors in the area.

Develop a comprehensive business plan with comprehensive objectives, financial projections, and marketing strategies. Don’t forget to become licensed and secure the necessary financing before launching your business. When you’re ready to start your yacht brokerage business, make sure to find the perfect physical location.

Create a website to reach new potential clients and showcase your services.

Make sure to build a complete, diverse client base by actively marketing your business. Don’t neglect the operational side of the business: make sure to stay organized, comply with all industry regulations, and provide excellent customer service. By following these steps, you can ensure that your yacht brokerage business is a success.

Start with strong foundations and be prepared to pivot and adjust to changes in the industry. Above all, focus on building long-term relationships with your clients to guarantee a successful yacht brokerage business.

How To Build A Yacht? (Step-By-Step Guide)

grow your own yacht

Do you dream of sailing away in your very own luxury yacht? Building a yacht may seem like a daunting task, but with the right resources, it can be an achievable goal.

In this step-by-step guide, we will provide advice and tips on how to build a yacht from scratch, from choosing a design plan to fitting navigation and safety equipment.

Whether you’re an experienced boatbuilder or just starting out, this guide will help you get started on the journey to creating your own unique yacht.

Table of Contents

Short Answer

Building a yacht requires a great deal of knowledge, skill, and experience.

Most yacht builders start by creating a design plan, and then they obtain the necessary materials and tools to build the yacht.

The actual process of building the yacht includes the construction of the hull, fitting the electrical and plumbing systems, and the mounting of the engines and other components.

Finally, the yacht is painted and weatherproofed to provide a finished, high-quality product.

Choosing a Design Plan

Choosing a design plan is one of the most important steps when building a yacht.

The plan should be chosen carefully, as it will determine the size, shape, and features of the yacht.

It is important to consider the intended purpose of the yacht, as well as the budget and the skill level of the builder.

When selecting a design plan, researching various plans and builders is essential.

Look for plans that have been tested and proven to be successful, as this will save time and effort later on.

It is also important to consider the materials and tools that will be needed for the project, as these can vary greatly between plans.

Once a plan has been selected, it is important to carefully read through all of the instructions and specifications to ensure that the builder understands all of the required steps and materials.

Some plans may require special tools or materials, so it is important to research and gather these items prior to beginning the building process.

Additionally, many plans have helpful illustrations and diagrams that can provide guidance throughout the building process.

With the right preparation and research, anyone can choose a design plan that suits their budget and skill level, and will ultimately create the perfect yacht.

Gathering Materials and Tools

grow your own yacht

Gathering the right materials and tools is essential for building a successful yacht.

Before starting any construction, you need to source the best materials, tools and supplies.

This includes wood, fiberglass, and other materials necessary for the hull, as well as rigging and electrical components.

You may also need to purchase or rent tools such as saws, drills, and sanders.

When gathering these materials and tools, it is important to consider the size and complexity of the yacht.

For larger yachts, you may need to source the materials from multiple vendors to ensure that you have the right quantities and quality of materials.

Additionally, you may need to invest in more advanced tools and machinery for larger projects.

For the best results, it is important to make sure that all materials and tools are of the highest quality.

High-quality materials are less likely to fail or degrade over time, and good-quality tools will last longer and make the job easier.

When sourcing materials and tools, it is also important to shop around for the best prices, as the cost of building a yacht can quickly add up.

Once all the materials and tools have been gathered, it is important to create a safe and organized workspace.

This includes ensuring that the space is well-ventilated, has proper lighting and is free of hazards.

Additionally, it is important to have all the materials and tools within easy reach to reduce the risk of injury or accidents.

Finally, make sure to store all tools and materials properly to reduce the risk of theft or damage.

By taking the time to gather the right materials and tools and create a safe and organized workspace, you can set yourself up for a successful yacht-building endeavor.

Preparing a Workspace

When it comes to building a yacht, having the right workspace is key.

The workspace should be large enough to accommodate the design plan, materials, and tools needed.

The workspace should also be well-ventilated and properly lit, with plenty of room for maneuvering.

Depending on the size of the boat, the workspace may need to be outside, in a large garage, or in a dedicated boatbuilding facility.

If youre building the boat in a garage, youll need to make sure the floor is level and the ceiling is high enough to accommodate the height of the boat.

If youre building outdoors, youll need to consider the weather and make sure the area is sheltered from wind and rain.

When setting up the workspace, its important to make sure its organized and free of clutter.

Its also important to ensure that all the tools and materials are easily accessible.

To ensure safety and efficiency, its best to keep the workspace clean and well organized at all times.

Its also important to make sure any combustible materials are kept away from any heat sources.

Finally, be sure to wear appropriate clothing and safety gear such as gloves, goggles, and a dust mask when working in the workspace.

By taking the time to properly prepare a workspace, anyone can ensure that the process of building a yacht goes as smoothly as possible.

With the right workspace, the right materials, and the right tools, anyone can build a beautiful, seaworthy yacht.

Constructing the Frame and Hull

grow your own yacht

Constructing the frame and hull of a yacht is arguably the most important step in the entire yacht building process.

It is time-consuming and requires a great deal of precision and skill.

The frame and hull must be constructed according to the design plan chosen in the first step, and the materials used must be of the highest quality to ensure a seaworthy vessel.

The frame of the yacht is the skeleton of the boat, and it is made from strong materials such as steel or aluminum.

The frame must be accurately measured and cut to the exact size and shape of the yacht, and then welded together to form the structure of the vessel.

The hull is the outer body of the yacht and it is typically made from fiberglass or timber.

It is important to get the measurements of the hull exactly right, as this will determine how well the yacht performs in the water.

Careful consideration must be taken when constructing the hull to ensure that it is strong and durable, and that it can withstand the rigors of the sea.

Once the frame and hull are constructed, they must be fitted with the necessary fixtures and fittings.

This includes the deck, cabin, windows, doors and hatches, as well as any interior and exterior decorations.

The fixtures and fittings must be securely attached to the frame and hull to ensure that the yacht is structurally sound and safe to use.

Finishing the Interior and Exterior

The final step in building a yacht is to finish the interior and exterior.

This can be one of the most enjoyable parts of the project, and there are plenty of options to choose from when it comes to styling and decorating the yacht.

If the interior is to be finished in wood, it is important to seal the wood properly and use the right products to ensure a long lasting finish.

If the yacht is to be painted, the right primer and paint must be selected for the job, and the surface prepared accordingly.

When it comes to the exterior, the choice of material will depend on the desired look and the budget.

For example, fiberglass is a popular material for yacht hulls due to its durability and low maintenance requirements.

If a more luxurious finish is desired, metals such as aluminum or stainless steel can be used.

It is also important to choose the correct type of paint for the job, as this will help to protect the yacht from the elements.

Once the exterior and interior of the yacht have been finished, it is time to fit out the interior with the necessary equipment.

This includes navigational and safety equipment such as life jackets, a compass, charts and navigation lights.

It is also important to install the necessary plumbing and electrical systems, as well as any other systems that are needed for the yacht to be comfortable and safe to use.

With the right preparation, anyone can build a beautiful, seaworthy yacht.

With careful planning, research and the correct tools and materials, building a yacht can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

Fitting Navigation and Safety Equipment

grow your own yacht

Fitting navigation and safety equipment is an essential step in building a yacht.

Before taking to the seas, the yacht must be outfitted with the necessary equipment to ensure a safe and enjoyable voyage.

Navigation equipment such as a GPS and compass should be installed, along with communication devices such as radios and satellite phones.

Safety equipment such as life jackets, fire extinguishers, and a flare gun should also be included in the kit.

Additionally, the yacht should be equipped with a first aid kit, emergency food and water, and a tool kit for repairs.

In order to ensure that all equipment is in good working condition, regular maintenance and inspections should be conducted.

By taking the time to properly equip the yacht with the necessary navigation and safety equipment, you can ensure that every voyage is safe and enjoyable.

11 tips to increase profits from your boat or yacht business

If you own a boat or yacht, you will know how expensive it can be, especially after you've paid for insurance, maintenance, and tax. But how about actually making money out of your hobby?

Whether you own a boat or already have an established tour or charter business, here are twelve of the best strategies we know to offset running costs and develop additional revenue streams.

1. Get a license and run charters and trips

If you have a well-equipped boat in good condition, why not share your boat with keen seafarers who do not? Once you have the required licenses , a whole host of options open up to you, be it chartering your boat or running tours. If you've already ticked this off the list, read on for ways to make money from your boat...

2. Be imaginative and find your niche

With your boat you could run fishing charters, whale and dolphin watching trips, oreco-tours... or develop your own niche. Nurture your creative entrepreneurial streak and provide your local tourism industry with what it needs!

3. Provide personalized cruises

Boat trips in popular destinations sometimes get a reputation of being packed with tourists, meaning you have to jostle for the best photo angle and, well, feel like a bit of a sardine. If your business offers personalised cruises for small groups, you can provide a welcome alternative.

Integrate TrekkSoft with your website and allow guests to create and book a custom package that's perfect for them.

4. Run photography tours

If your customers take loads of photos on your boat tours, why not offer a dedicated photography trip? Take your boat by the most scenic spots in your region, and offer plenty of time for photo stops.

If you're a talented photographer, you could even provide a quick masterclass at the start of the trip and provide tailored advice for guests as you go.

5. Partner up with diving companies

Is your region popular for diving as well? You could think about cross-selling your tours with diving companies, partnering up for trips, or offering package deals.

6. host special events such as wedding cruises.

Another option is to offer your boat or yacht as a special venue for events that deserve a bit of celebration. For instance, you could host an afternoon wedding cruise with a few canapes on offer from your local catering company: a luxury option for your inventory!

7. Offer sailing lessons

Are you an exceptional sailor? Do you have a teaching qualification, or could that be a goal for you? Happy customers of your boat trips might be intrigued by the option, especially if they want a gift for a friend or to tick off a bucket list goal. It can be a lucrative revenue stream for you too.

8. Your customers expect to book online

Once you've found your niche and created your business plan (our blog can help you with that) , TrekkSoft provides the booking, rental, and payment software to take your boat or yacht business to the next level.

You can also cross-sell your activities with local companies on the Partner Network, and build a transactional website from scratch using our Website Builder.  We'd love to have a chat with you about your business!

9. Consider peer-to-peer (P2P) rentals

If you own a boat or yacht, there are now a range of P2P boat rental websites you can sign up for, such as   Boatsetter.com . You have the boat, they have the distribution platform, insurance and marketing.

10. Partner up with Airbnb hosts

Increasing numbers of travellers are opting to stay in alternative accommodations using platforms such as  Airbnb  and  HomeAway  on their vacation. Since this trend shows no signs of stopping, tourism companies shouldn't ignore its potential!

We've compiled five ways for tour and activity providers to work with Airbnb hosts , including offering them a referral commission and offering their customers special deals.  Another option is to...

11. Offer your boat as a unique rental experience

Some of the most appealing options on Airbnb are the most unconventional. There are treehouses, castles, and of course: boats. If your boat has a fantastic interior and living space, why not rent it out for overnight stays while it is docked in the harbor?

10 Tips for Increasing Revenue to Grow Your Boat Marina Business Rastrac Team | Aug 4, 2022 11:00:00 AM

Managing a boat marina business comes with several unique challenges that can hurt your profitability.

One of the most notable challenges is ensuring that your boats are well-maintained and in good working order. This can be a costly operational expense because boats are expensive to repair and maintain.

What’s more, when it comes to developing and implementing an efficient marina business plan, you need to consider how you stand out from the crowd. With nearly 10,000 marina businesses in operation in the U.S., according to marina industry research , there is a lot of fierce competition.

This is why your marina business plan needs to include ideas for generating revenue through various streams that solve for the specific pain points and goals of your customers.

10 Marina Management Tips to Increase Your Revenue

Diversifying how your marina organization serves your ideal customers through various marina services can take a lot of time and planning. But with a clear roadmap and a list of what you need to do to hit your business goals, you can act fast and start generating revenue now.

marina-business-min

Follow along with these tips for improving how you manage revenue operations for your marina:

1. Prioritize Customer Service

This may seem obvious, but several organizations fail to adopt a “customer first” mentality. Some leaders don’t know how to turn this idea into a reality.

Marina managers should prioritize customer service by creating a welcoming and helpful environment, addressing customer concerns promptly, and always striving to improve the quality of service. By providing excellent customer service, marina managers can deepen relationships with their customers and ensure that they keep coming back.

Creating a positive, transparent culture is the first step to providing great customer service. This means that employees should be friendly and accommodating, and that the physical space should be clean and well-maintained. In addition, customers should be able to easily find the information they need.

If a customer has a concern, your team should address it promptly. This shows that your business cares about the customer and is committed to providing a superior experience. Make sure your team is following up with customers after addressing their concerns to make sure they are satisfied.

You can also distribute customer surveys to collect feedback from all your customers quickly and efficiently. These insights can show your leadership team how to train their employees to improve specific areas of customer service.

By providing great customer service, you’re not only able to retain your customers, but you can also build a positive reputation in your community. This can lead to referrals so you can gain new customers by delighting your current ones.

2. Keep Your Marina Clean

A clean marina is important for both aesthetic and safety reasons. It's vital to keeping customers happy and coming back, as well as attracting new business. A well-maintained facility also helps protect against liability issues.

There are a few key things to keep in mind when it comes to keeping your marina clean.

First, regular trash removal is a must. All debris should be promptly removed from the docks and parking areas.

You also need to have a plan for dealing with spills and other accidents. Spills can cause slip-and-fall accidents, so it's important to have a system in place for quickly cleaning them up. You should also post signs warning of potential hazards.

Additionally, it’s important to have a regular maintenance schedule for your docks and other marina infrastructure. This will help prevent problems before they start and keep your facility looking its best.

3. Enhance Marina Safety Measures

Safety is of the utmost importance in a marina. There are a number of potential hazards present, from slip-and-fall risks to exposure to harmful chemicals. It's important to have strict safety protocols in place to protect both customers and employees.

Some tips to keep your team and customers safe include the following:

  • Establish and enforce strict safety rules.
  • Educate staff and customers on proper safety procedures.
  • Inspect docks and other marina infrastructure regularly.
  • Establish documented schedules for preventative maintenance for your watercraft rental fleet.
  • Install safety features such as railings and lighting.
  • Post signs warning of potential hazards.
  • Have a plan in place for dealing with spills and accidents.
  • Train staff in first aid and CPR.
  • Conduct regular safety drills.
  • Keep the marina clean and well-maintained.
  • Have a clear evacuation plan in case of an emergency.

Creating a safe environment is essential for building positive relationships with your customers and your communities. This supports long-term growth for your business.

4. Invest in New Amenities

Most marinas provide a few basic amenities, such as restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities. Some also offer more extensive amenities, such as restaurants, bars, swimming pools, dockside TV, and tennis courts. Others may even have their own grocery stores or gas stations.

Look at your competitors in your area and find what you can offer that sets you apart from them. Additionally, you can use customer surveys to better understand needs they have and find ways to provide specific marina services and amenities that fit those needs.

5. Expand Your Marina Services and Products

Many marinas offer a wide range of services to their customers, from boat storage and repair to charter services and more. Look at what you currently offer and listen to what your customers are saying.

Customer feedback is key because they can tell you exactly what marina services they're looking for. If you're not meeting their needs, a competitor in your area might.

Depending on what your customers want and what your company can provide, here are some ideas on new marina services and products you can provide:

  • Transient Dockage
  • Annual Dockage
  • Dock Side Pump Outs
  • Mobile Pump Outs
  • Launch Services
  • Winter Storage
  • Bottom Painting
  • Fiberglass and Gelcoat Repair
  • Mechanical Services and Repairs
  • Electrical Services and Repairs
  • Sailboat Rigging
  • Interior and Exterior Detailing
  • Canvas Cleaning and Repair

Another common service that can increase your revenue involves watercraft and equipment rentals, as outlined below.

6. Rent Out Equipment

Provide customers with the opportunity to rent specific items, including marina safety equipment or other useful products to provide them with a positive experience. This might include renting dock carts, ladders, and dock lockers.

This provides a lower cost investment for customers who may not need to purchase specific pieces of equipment.

Additionally, you can rent watercraft items, like boats and jet skis. Just be sure you have a system in place for protecting both your equipment and the renters using your equipment.

For example, GPS tracking helps you keep boat operators safe while protecting your watercraft inventory. You can use software tools for tracking where your rentals go to prevent theft and use geofencing to help boaters avoid dangerous waterways.

GPS tracking software for marinas helps you protect your investments and maximize the lifespan of your fleet. This helps maintain a good profit margin on your products and services.

7. Host Events

Providing fun events is a great way to keep your current customers engaged and happy, while also attracting newcomers! Marketing your event is really important so you can get the word out and attract the right people to your upcoming events.

Some marina event ideas include:

  • Sailing Races
  • Charity Events
  • Fishing Tournaments
  • Wakeboarding Competitions
  • Children scavenger hunts

Use these events to showcase your marina's top notch customer service, and be prepared to connect with people who may be interested in your marina for future services.

8. Become Location Experts

Educate your team on local attractions and fun ideas that they can share with your customers. Conduct ongoing training to keep your team up to speed on all the fun local things to do.

Be prepared for customers to ask your team for advice on where to go and what to do. You can build a library of content specific to your local attractions and provide your customers with access to these pieces of content. This may include formats like digital brochures, physical copies of pamphlets, or social media posts that your customers can share.

9. Focus on Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Using SEO best practices ensures your boat marina shows up on search engines when your target audience is searching for services or products you provide. For example, if boaters search for "marinas near me" or "boat dockage services," they will either be finding you or your competitors.

Effective SEO strategies focus on solving for a searcher's pain point by creating helpful content. So if your marina's website is not optimized and it fails to target the right keywords, you need to invest in updating your digital presence.

While SEO takes a lot of time and consistent effort, the presence and authority you build is great for building brand awareness and trust for your marina business.

10. Establish a Social Media Presence

Social media continues to grow, and certain channels are great for building your brand. Depending on your target audience, you can focus on creating helpful and engaging content on specific platforms.

It's a good idea to test and evolve your social media marketing strategy over time. To get started, check out what your competitors are doing or take notes on how other marinas in different regions manage their social presence.

Drive Revenue With These Marina Management Insights

Following the tips we covered will set you up for business growth. Make sure you keep your entire organization aligned with the direction of your efforts as you move forward.

3deluxe VY.01 Superyacht

It’s not exactly easy to grow your own fruit and veggies aboard a yacht, but one design studio just sprouted a novel solution.

3deluxe recently unveiled a new superyacht concept at the Monaco Yacht Show that looks to be a gardener’s dream. The design, known as VY.01 , is practically a floating garden fit for the high seas. Billed as a “paradisiacal biotope,” the vessel comes complete with a greenhouse and vegetable garden that allows budding green thumbs to cultivate their own produce on board. Fresh fish can also be captured from the ocean, allowing seafarers to be entirely self-sufficient.

The superyacht itself appears to be just as green as the verdant plant life. The studio says it is equipped with a hydrogen fuel cell system and electric propulsion for cruising sans CO2 emissions, noise and vibrations. The streamlined silhouette, meanwhile, ensures minimal resistance to the wind and waves for greater efficiency and seakeeping. Elsewhere, the vessel sports rooftop solar panels to generate clean energy for things like the seawater desalination system that provides additional water needed for the plants.

3deluxe VY.01 Superyacht

VY.01 comes complete with a greenhouse and vegetable garden.  3deluxe

The eco-friendly ethos even extends to construction. According to 3deluxe, the materials could be supplied by a selection of pioneering steel and aluminum manufacturers in Norway and Germany, who use renewable energy throughout production to reduce emissions. The studio also says the actual build could be optimized in a similar fashion to keep it as sustainable as possible. In an ideal scenario for the studio, the future-proof workflow would be adopted by the entire industry to reduce the environmental impact of superyacht builds.

Even without its eco credentials, VY.01 is still one luxurious superyacht with what sounds like a lot of Feng Shui. The wheelhouse has been unconventionally situated at the bow to allow the open sundeck behind it to flow seamlessly through to the spacious interior. With greenery aplenty, the open-plan living space encourages guests to move from inside to the outdoors seamlessly. The exterior is no slouch, either, since it features a sizable saltwater pool and accompanying marina with direct access to the sea.

While VY.01 is just a concept at this stage, it appears to have the potential to be a game-changing vessel.

Growing food on your yacht: Everything you need to know to become self-sufficient

Yachting World

  • November 16, 2020

Self-sufficiency is a goal of many liveaboard cruisers who sail the world’s oceans, generating their own water and power, writes Erin Carey

growing-food-on-boats-herb-garden-credit-Rick-Moore

With limited space and the obvious challenges of salt, wind and motion, many would never entertain the idea of growing their own produce. Yet it can be possible: we spoke to cruisers who are successful gardeners to learn more about the possibilities of growing fresh herbs and vegetables on a yacht.

Scurvy, the illness that historically dogged seafarers, is caused by a lack of Vitamin C, traditionally associated with long passages at sea without fruit or veg. Thankfully scurvy is not something most sailors need to worry about these days, however, fresh greens still only last a few days in most boat refrigerators, often suffering bruising from the movement.

But with a garden on board, no matter how small, pasta with fresh basil or a crunchy salad is no longer limited to shore bought provisions. Many herbs are also known to have health benefits, being rich in vitamins and anti-inflammatory properties.

Rick Moore grows aloe vera, herbs and veg aboard Sophisticated Lady

With plans to sail across the Pacific Ocean , long-time cruiser Rick Moore, and his first mate Maddie, a chef, decided that an onboard garden was a necessity for their Jeanneau 52 Sophisticated Lady .

“Recent times have highlighted the importance of self-sufficiency on a yacht, not only in terms of power and water but in every form: energy, food and health,” explains Rick. “The choice to start constructing a small organic vegetable garden seemed, to us, the most sensible decision for our boat.”

Get started

Growing a garden on a boat does require some planning and dedication, with challenges that are unique to life afloat. “In the initial stages, the seedlings have to be protected as much as possible from seawater. For that reason, we try to grow shade-loving plants like aloe, oregano, chives, tomatoes, chillies and mint, under the dodger, where they’ll be protected from the elements, sea spray and have less sun exposure”, explains Moore.

Three hulls, one planet: Neel 51 owner explains how he went self-sustainable

Bluewater sailing stories usually start with someone who has been around boats all their life. But not this one. A…

Your location will also determine what will thrive and what will perish, and this requires a bit of trial and error. Sending a few plants to their watery grave, especially in the early days, will be common. Living on a boat requires patience, and gardening on a boat is no different; it takes time. However, according to Moore, your dedication will see you reap the rewards after a few short months.

He recommends starting with cheap seedlings from the local market or seeds from the supermarket. “They’re cheap and perfect to start experimenting. You can even grow the seeds in the trays that meat comes in, and transplant them once they have sprouted,” he added.

“By using rectangular pots with a low centre of gravity and less soil than you would usually, it will make the pot less likely to topple over and create less of a mess if it does. Also consider choosing plants that are happy to share a pot, such as thyme, oregano and rosemary, which all prefer very well-drained soil, or mint, coriander and lemon balm, which prefer more moisture. This way you will maximise your space and increase variety.”

growing-food-on-boats-lunch-credit-Rick-Moore

Adding home grown herbs to lunch on Sophisticated Lady

Long rectangle planter boxes are often ideal, especially if fitted neatly under the dodger. While some plants need well-drained soil, Moore tends to use pots that don’t have holes in the bottom of them, or fills them with disposable fibre, simply because saucers of muddy water on a moving boat are not something you want to deal with.

If your plants do take on sea spray, rinsing with a freshwater spray bottle can help rejuvenate them after a long passage. It’s also important to train your plants, which means clipping them to encourage a lower but wider growth pattern. Tall, top-heavy plants will be less likely to remain upright.

Of course, the biggest difficulties arise when you decide to go sailing, especially if living on a monohull at a 45° angle. “One solution we’ve found is to wrap the pots in aluminium foil, leaving only the plants exposed. This not only contains the soil, but it also contains moisture and prevents the soil from drying out,” said Moore.

“Another option is to store the pots in wooden crates that can be stored somewhere secure down below. When you’ve encountered an unexpected squall or rough seas, the last thing you need to be dealing with is a soil covered saloon,” he added. Other solutions to secure your plants while underway include bungee cords, blu-tac, or heavy-duty Velcro, depending on the size of the pot.

Fed and watered

All of Rick and Maddie’s plants are fertilised with homemade compost, created with the organic waste from food scraps such as vegetable peelings, coffee and tea remnants, eggshells and prunings. They also treat their garden with natural insecticides, so as not to contaminate their foods with chemicals.

The irrigation system is provided directly from seawater, desalinated on board. While watermaker water is generally fine to use, it is recommended that you test with a small pH kit (similar to that used to test swimming pools) to ensure the right acidity for your plants. That may mean adding a small dose of white vinegar to balance the acidity. Another option is to collect rainwater, which is often easy enough to do by capturing the runoff from areas such as the bimini and solar panels.

Hydroponic gardening aboard Chasing Eden proved fast and productive

If you’re in a remote area and buying soil from the supermarket is not an option, you can often ask locals for some rich soil from their gardens. Most people will be happy to oblige, but remember that you do not want to introduce a population of new critters to your boat. If feasible, one solution is to freeze the soil for a few days to kill off any bugs.

Gardening on a boat can be an enjoyable hobby that is challenging yet rewarding. According to Moore, the simplest and fastest plants to grow were basil, oregano and chilli peppers. But he also grows a number of flowering shrubs and tropical plants, as well as aloe vera, which can be used to treat sunburn and insect bites.

“I get a lot of enjoyment from my plants, so much so that I often give them names. They add a sense of calm to our home, are aesthetically pleasing and cleanse the air. They also give me a sense of purpose, and after they have travelled with me for many years, I feel like they become part of the family.”

Hydroponics

Kyle Brereton and Hayley Cook live on an Australian-built catamaran called Chasing Eden . Besides growing succulents and tropical evergreens on board, they have set up a hydroponics garden under the davits of their boat.

“What led us to the hydro system was that it was lightweight, clean, and yields a much quicker crop. For life on a boat, everything needs to be very adaptable and productive,” explains Brereton. “We initially tried our veggie patch in soil, but we ended up with tiny, shrivelled little plants which had taken up all of our aft deck space.”

The couple experimented with a hydroponics system and found it was easy to deliver the adequate nutrients straight to the plant, enabling them to grow healthy and strong much faster.

One issue was pollination. “We soon realised that there weren’t too many bees keen to visit our boat in the middle of the ocean,” Cook recalls. Gardening websites have tips on how to self-pollinate your plants using a small brush.

Sally McAdam of Clearwater Cruising also has a hydroponics system on her boat. “We’re using hydroponic nutrients to grow basil, kale, Chinese cabbage, chives and amaranth. This came about because it was very difficult to find good growing soil for pots (in our case coconuts) on sand atolls and in island communities.

“We’ve made hanging gardens out of plastic bottles that gimbal with our movements. They hang from the davits, but in big seas we take them down below.”

The Boat Building Process

Boat Assembly

Building a boat requires a systematic approach that involves several essential steps. Whether you’re embarking on a DIY boat construction project or assembling a pre-made kit, understanding the boat building process is crucial for ensuring a successful outcome. In this section, we’ll guide you through each step, from setting up the backbone to the final assembly of your boat.

1. Setting up the Backbone and Framing

The first step in boat construction is setting up the backbone, which includes installing the keel, stem, and sternpost. These components create the structural framework of the boat. Once the backbone is in place, you’ll proceed to frame the boat, adding the ribs or frames that provide shape and support. This stage requires accuracy and attention to detail to ensure a properly aligned and sturdy frame.

2. Planking

After the framing is complete, it’s time to attach the planks to the boat’s frame. Planking can be done using various methods, such as using plywood or traditional wooden planks. Each plank is carefully fitted and fastened to the frame, creating the outer skin of the boat. This process requires precision to achieve watertight seams and a smooth finish.

3. Fiberglassing

To strengthen and protect the hull, many boat builders choose to fiberglass the boat’s exterior. Fiberglass provides additional durability, water resistance, and improves the overall structural integrity of the boat. This step involves applying layers of fiberglass cloth and resin to the hull, followed by sanding and finishing to create a smooth surface.

4. Interior and Exterior Finishing

Once the hull is complete, attention turns to the interior and exterior finishing of the boat. This includes installing bulkheads, cabinetry, flooring, and other interior components. On the exterior, you’ll apply paint or varnish to protect the boat from the elements and enhance its appearance. Finishing touches such as adding hardware, windows, and electrical systems complete the boat assembly process.

A superyacht captain shares 3 things people who want to charter a luxury vessel should know

  • Vacationing on a superyacht may sound like it's all Champagne and sunbathing.
  • But before boarding a luxury vessel, superyacht captain Kelly Gordon advises keeping certain things in mind.
  • Yachting is a summer pastime with risks and nuances for clients and crew.

Insider Today

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez soaking up the sun. Travis Barker and Kourtney Kardashian's wedding . Beyoncé's carefree jump into the ocean.

One of these images is likely what comes to mind when you hear the word "superyacht," a phrase generally used to describe a yacht over 80 feet in length.

While ultra-luxurious vessels are associated with all things carefree, tragic events such as the sinking of the Bayesian superyacht off the coast of Sicily on Monday is a reminder that yachting is a pastime with unique risks and nuances. It's unclear what the protocols were on the Bayesian.

For those keen on the idea of chartering a superyacht, captain Kelly Gordon, 42, told Business Insider there are a number of important factors to consider before hopping on board.

Gordon fell in love with yachting after she stepped aboard a yacht for the first time in her mid-20s.

Hellbent on reaching captain level, Gordon quickly worked her way up the chain of command. She's spent most of her time sailing the Bahamas and the Caribbean and is now based in Florida, where she works as a captain on a 108-foot-long privately owned vessel.

Gordon, who has over 12,600 followers on Instagram , shares three factors to keep in mind before boarding a chartered superyacht.

Think of the process of chartering a superyacht as buying a house

One of the most important things to do when chartering a superyacht is to work with a charter broker, Gordon says.

"The charter manager's job is to No. 1: find you a safe boat," Gordon said, adding that in her experience, "Not all programs put safety as high up on the list as it should be."

She also likes to equate charter brokers to Realtors in that they take on the role of finding you the best option for your taste.

Related stories

"You find one that you gel with really well and has a good reputation, and then you discuss with them what your budget is, where you want to go, what your activity levels are, what your personalities are like," Gordon said.

Pairing clients with a crew that aligns with their characteristics is a huge part of a charter broker's job, Gordon said.

"If you think about it, you're living with that crew for 24/7, around the clock," she said. "You're not going put someone that just wants to sit and read books all day with a crew that's extremely active."

Find a crew that is competent and prioritizes safety

Charter brokers also help match clients with a competent crew that prioritizes safety.

"I don't know that many people realize just how much their life is in our hands when we cast those lines and we go to sea," Gordon said.

Part of that is having a safety briefing, which Gordon carries out every time she welcomes clients onto a chartered vessel before leaving a dock.

A thorough safety briefing includes informing clients about the location of safety equipment and lifejackets and the procedures for events such as a fire, a person falling overboard, or the boat sinking.

"You should have a safety briefing, and if you don't get one, you should ask for one," Gordon said.

The process, she added, can be different on privately owned yachts, where passengers may be familiar with the vessel.

The Bayesian is a private yacht owned by tech tycoon Mike Lynch; it's not yet known what kind of safety protocols staff and guests were trained on.

Make sure there's a member of the crew on watch 24/7

"A lot of charter guests think when they go to sleep, the crew goes to sleep," Gordon said.

But that shouldn't be the case, she added. "You want to be on a boat knowing that someone's up, because if the weather changes or the anchor starts to drag, you need somebody that's up and ready to go and get everybody else to handle it."

Among the biggest weather risks are tornados, which can be extremely difficult to predict and prepare for whether you're on land or at sea.

"I'm from the Midwest, where tornados pop up," Gordon said. "It's hard to see a tornado coming, and if you do see it coming, the tornado goes where it wants to go."

Most often, that leaves people near the weather event with just minutes to ready themselves, which is even trickier "in the middle of the night."

While rapid changes in weather are tough to contend with, Gordon recommends researching the areas you are sailing in beforehand, like you would when visiting a new country.

"It's no different than if you're going on vacation on land," she said. "You want to know where you're going. Don't put that just all on the crew."

While the research doesn't have to be as extensive as the crew should be doing, it's important to still be "responsible for your own self as well as your family and your guests."
