The owner of s/y 'rox star' discusses his yacht’s unusual gulet-inspired design….

Delivered from Oguz Marin shipyard in Bodrum, Turkey in 2015, the 40m  Rox Star blends classic gulet lines with a modern twist. By drawing on Turkish influences, the owner wanted to build a yacht that filled a niche in the charter market.

“Gulets are popular charter yachts because they have very spacious decks, but they are not known for their sailing performance,” Rox Star ’s owner explains. “We wanted to take the spacious element of gulet design, but combine it with sailing performance to get the best of both worlds.” This concept certainly achieves the desired effect in terms of creating space:  Rox Star ’s broad foredeck offers an expansive area for sunbathing.

Reflecting on the decision to choose little-known Turkish shipyard Oguz Marin for the build, the owner admits that his desire to be very involved in the design of the yacht was the main factor. “It was very interesting working with Oguz Marin,” he recalls. “The Turkish come from a very long boat-building history, so they build very heavy and strong boats with a lot of comfort.

 “At the beginning of the project the yard team produced some original hand drawings, which were obviously very influenced by their experience building traditional gulets, but we knew exactly what we wanted and they were very open to our wishes. Of course we were aware of the Turkish reputation, but we showed them the way things are done in Europe and the United States and they were really good at listening and modifying their habits.”

Rox Star ’s interior is almost as unique as its exterior, which incorporates a rock and roll twist. As a result, she has certainly been a talking point on the charter market. “I have been amazed at the number of charter brokers that have come on board and asked; ‘What is she?’,” the owner laughs. "The expectation of a Turkish-built boat is just to see another gulet, but with  Rox Star  that is not the case.”

Rox Star ’s owner admits that the charter industry often pigeonholes gulets as ‘not quite’ superyachts, meaning that they don’t offer the same level as luxury as the rest of the fleet. Furthermore, they are often not considered proper sailing yachts. “We hope to redefine that stereotype with Rox Star ,” he concludes.

Meet Captain Sezayi Ozcelik, known as Captain Eroll

Captain Eroll has been on board ROX STAR from her early days. He is a sailing yacht captain at heart, and although Eroll has worked on motor yachts, he missed ‘the feel of the sea in [his] bones.’ Sailing under wind-power has him hooked. This passion and skill makes him the perfect captain for your charter on board this stunning 39.9m (130.9ft) sailing yacht…

What inspired you to become a captain?

A career on the sea was a natural step for me, as I grew up sailing with my family out of Bodrum, Turkey. I was 23 years old when my family built a yacht to take charter guests, and that was my first job. I have grown up in this profession and I love it.

Tell us about  ROX STAR . What makes her special?

She is my favourite yacht. She is amazing to sail, and everywhere we go, others love her too. I always get asked, ‘where was she built – who designed her?’ I think it is because she looks so distinctive. She doesn’t look like a Perini Navi yacht, or like a classic yacht, she is totally different.

Her first owners were husband and wife, an architect and interior designer. They designed every detail of her living spaces. That eye for detail even went as far as carefully choosing the colours of the ropes used for the sails.

What sets her apart from other sailing yachts?

She has a huge sail area, over 700sqm (2,300sqft) of canvas, and she snakes through the water. The sails also make her very stable. Guests love to take the helm and feel her power through the wheel and under their feet. Of course, there is so much to learn and do on a yacht like this, so the whole family can enjoy the adventure.

What do families enjoy on a ROX STAR charter?

The crew are excellent with children – in particular, our engineer and first mate – and they know how to keep the children interested and learning new skills when we are sailing, which means that parents can relax too. The children love to be involved with the crew, and we are delighted when we see the excitement in their faces as they experience sailing ROX STAR.

Charterers like to come with me to the cockpit when we are sailing, so they can join in on the action. When the sails come down, guests like to sunbathe on the sunpads, or sit in the outdoor dining area under the shade canopy.

Then at anchor, we drop the 5.5m (18ft) tender from the davits, for trips ashore and water-skiing. We also have a swim platform astern, and a ladder to get in and out the water. Plus, SeaBobs to zoom about under the surface, fishing gear and kayaks… There is so much to do.

What about the bedrooms and inside space?

The shape of the coach house gives you a very good-sized lounge, with comfy sofas and chairs and even a sit-up bar. There is a skylight which floods in natural light, it’s a really nice feature.

In the master cabin, there is another skylight over the bed which lets you look up at the moon and stars. You have a remote control for the electric curtains, so you can shut them from your bed.

All the cabins and bathrooms have lots of space and luxurious facilities. This is all part of the original owner’s meticulous design…

How do you create a charter to suit your guests?

It is about knowing who they are and what they are looking forward to doing. The Mediterranean is a wonderful playground, and we can find them the best restaurants, archaeological sites, and nightclubs.

If our guests want to host friends on board, we can have a quayside event for up to 50 people. This is because of the foredeck design, which allows us to clear the deck completely and create a wide space for people to gather. It is a lot of fun for our charterers to invite friends to join them for an evening.

Working together with Burgess charter managers and brokers, we create a bespoke itinerary for each charter group. Careful planning is the key to making each charter work smoothly.

You know the Turkish coast very well…

I know this coast intimately, and the sailing conditions here. Now, a couple of decades on, I can say the same for France, Italy, Greece, Croatia – all of the Mediterranean.

It is essential knowledge for building an itinerary to suit our guests. We want to take them to the best places and give them the best charter holiday.

Where is ROX STAR going to be sailing next?

We are currently in Turkey, so we will be sailing from here to pick up guests in Italy and then on to Greece. I love sailing around Amalfi and Positano, and then there’s a beach in Corsica that I like to take guests to – it is isolated from the tourist trail and has no houses or hotels, just a big beach with one restaurant run by local people, it is very nice, and it’s my secret for my charter guests!

Available for charter, ROX STAR can provide charter guests the same incredible on-water experience. This custom-built luxury yacht offers impressive style and amenities. ROX STAR will make you feel like a rock star when you cruise aboard as all eyes are on this yacht when she pulls into port thanks to her striking jet-black hull and sails. ROX STAR is ready to welcome you and your family and friends for the charter yacht holiday of a lifetime.

Design and performance

ROX STAR boast incredible sailing prowess. This ketch-style, displacement hull sailing yacht has a beam of 30 feet (9.20m). She also has an 11-foot (3.50m) draft. Her gross tonnage is 233. ROX STAR is best powered by the wind when under full sail, but if the weather isn’t cooperating, the captain can turn on her engines that provide her with a cruising speed of 12 knots. Underway stabilizers ensure stability and provide guests with total comfort while sailing.

Guests of ROX STAR often mention her unique charm. This stunning luxury sailing yacht for charter features comfortable, modern interior spaces. Beautiful walnut woods are mixed with sumptuous leathers and comfortable furnishings to create ideal areas for guests to socialize and relax. Rox Star is ideal for keeping friends and family entertained. You’ll find plenty of space for dining and relaxing, and air conditioning ensures guests remain comfortable even on the hottest of days.

Rox Star comes complete with a modern stabilization system to reduce roll motion even during rough seas, and the yacht also has ‘at anchor stabilizers’ to keep things smooth even at anchor/zero speed.

Throughout the interior, you’ll see rock star artworks, walnut and leather interiors and a sumptuous, elegant cockpit. A jet black hull and sails adds a real feel of elegance, and Rox Star also has a drop-down swim platform.

Rox Star offers a smooth cruising experience, and her cruising speed is 12 knots. Her top speed is 14 knots, and this head-turner delivers exceptional performance.

The sleek and sophisticated ROX STAR is a stellar charter choice thanks to her high-performance sailing credentials, experienced crew and effortlessly cool interior.

After a refreshing swim off the stern to start your day, a healthy al fresco breakfast is served at the large, comfortable cockpit dining area. It is then time to enjoy a morning of fun on the water off the swim platform, which submerges a metre below sea level for added accessibility. With a large selection of watertoys available, you can explore the anchorage on kayaks, paddleboards, or perhaps try waterskiing and wakeboarding. Snorkelling is a fun activity for all, and diving equipment is available for excursions accompanied by a local guide.

With her anchor raised and black sails unfurled, it is time to show off ROX STAR’s capabilities on the water. Take the helm under the guidance of the captain and experience the remarkable sensation of manoeuvring her through the waves while propelled by the power of the wind. Or simply enjoy watching the crew as they masterfully guide her on her course.

Once the anchor is lowered again and the morning’s action has come to an end, it is time to enjoy lunch on the aft cockpit. A sushi banquet, perhaps, or a selection of fresh local seafood and salads prepared by the chef.

An afternoon trip ashore offers the opportunity to explore a nearby port town or hike along a clifftop trail, should you feel adventurous. Or simply chill out for a few hours and choose between relaxing on the sun pads of the aft deck and the foredeck, accompanied by a freshly mixed cocktail and good company. Alternatively, escape the heat of the day in the sanctuary of the elegant lounge with a drink at the sit-up bar or a game of backgammon with a fellow guest.

Then head to your cabin to freshen up for dinner. ROX STAR accommodates up to 11 guests in five double cabins, including a spacious, full-beam master stateroom with king size bed, skylight and steam shower.

Sundowner cocktails and canapés are served on the aft deck, with breath-taking views of the anchorage at twilight, before you make your way into the lounge for an intimate dinner at the table seating all 10 guests. Then, after the meal, head outside once more to the foredeck which is set up for an outdoor movie night with blankets, or enjoy a nightcap with some stargazing in the lounging area to complete the perfect day on board.
