Volvo Ocean 65, VO65 NO6
Persico Marine, Volvo Ocean 65 Built 2015 / €400,000
Broker’s Comments
The Volvo Ocean 65 is an iconic ocean greyhound. Conceived especially for the Volvo Ocean Race, with a brief following a downturn of entries from the spiraling costs of the Volvo 70 – a study was undertaken to provide a one-design class to keep costs down and provide a close and entertaining race for the public to follow.
Farr Yachts’ design produced a yacht that was capable of being just 2.7% slower than the Volvo 70 class, but significantly more robust, and designed with more protection for the crew. In fact, the Volvo 65 holds the Volvo Ocean Race 24 hour distance record, a testament to the strong build and excellent design of the yacht.
Volvo Ocean 65 NO6 has competed in the race a few times, originally as VESTAS and TURN THE TIDE ON PLASTIC. Now available from the new owners for the next race and beyond, she comes as a complete package with support containers.

TWO CLASSES
The next edition of The Ocean Race will be open to two classes of high-performance ocean-going racing yachts
The Ocean Race 2022-23 features two fleets of highperformance ocean-going racing yachts – both are capable of high speeds and in the right conditions can cover 600 nautical miles or more in 24-hours. The 60-foot IMOCA Class is racing around the world for The Ocean Race Trophy, while the 65-foot VO65 Class is racing for The Ocean Race VO65 Sprint Cup over three legs: Leg 1 from Alicante, Spain to Cabo Verde, Leg 6 from Aarhus, Denmark to The Hague in the Netherlands, and Leg 7 from The Hague to Genova, Italy.
Perhaps best known for single-handed or doublehanded racing, the IMOCAs will race with a full crew for their first participation in The Ocean Race.
The IMOCA Class uses a development design rule which allows the designers to experiment with hull and sail shapes within set parameters. However, masts, booms and standing rigging are one-design.
Like the VO65, IMOCAs also have a powerful sail plan and a canting keel, but the class rules also allow the use of retractable underwater foils which further boost performance by lifting the boat partially out of the water.
- 60-foot (18.3 metres) carbon construction single hull yachts
- Built to a development rule, so designers can experiment within hull and sail shapes within set parameters
- Raced by mixed sex crews of four or five sailors
- A weighted swinging keel and a pair of retractable underwater foils dramatically boost performance
- Capable of travelling over 600 nautical miles in 24 hours
Having previously raced around the world in the last two editions of The Ocean Race, in the 2022-23 race the VO65s are racing over three legs for The Ocean Race VO65 Sprint Cup.
Built to a strict one-design rule, the boats are identical in every way, and therefore extremely evenly matched.
A towering sail plan along with a weighted keel that can be canted horizontally underneath the boat make the VO65s powerful and fast in open ocean conditions.
- 65-foot (20-metre) single hull carbon construction yachts
- built to a one-design rule, so identical hull and sail design
- raced by mixed sex crews of minimum seven sailors
- a weighted swinging keel gives the boat huge leverage and power
- capable of travelling over 600 nautical miles in 24 hours

What else will I need to pay for?
In addition to the charter fee you will pay an Advanced Charter Allowance (ACA) from which the cost for all food and drink for the duration of the charter, fuel, marina and any other additional expenses will be deducted.
What happens once I have booked?
Once you have booked a cruising charter we will be in touch to gather your charter preferences including dietary preferences, meal times and itinerary. We will liaise with the chef to arrange a proposed menu for the charter and put you in touch with the crew via Whatsapp chat.
What are high and low season dates for Caribbean cruising charters
High Season includes the Christmas and New Year period (approx 28th December – 7th January) and 2 weeks around Easter
Can I charter a yacht for a corporate event?
Yes, we offer corporate yacht charters that are perfect for team-building exercises and other corporate functions.
What insurance will I need?
The yacht is fully insured but you will need your own personal insurance that covers yacht racing
Do I need an owners rep/boat captain and what role will they have?

Eating out as a crew?
If you decide to venture out as a group and wish to include the permanent crew, please remember that what is your holiday is their job. If you would like to show your appreciation for all their hard work in making your holiday a success by asking them to join you for a night out, then please be kind enough to pay for their expenses.

For most racing charters your schedule will include 2 training days prior to the event start date, for offshore races a third day for boat preparation will also be included.
What additional costs should I expect?

As the regatta date approaches we will connect you with the Boat Captain via Whatsapp chat and provide useful information on both the event and on the location. We are available at any time via phone or email to answer any other questions or queries you may have.
What is the security deposit for?
The security deposit is to cover damage to the yacht, that is more than just general wear and tear that would be expected when racing. In the worst case scenario it will cover the excess should there be the need for a claim on the yacht’s insurance. However, it is also there to cover less serious damage that does not warrant an insurance claim like damages to sails. If there is no damage then we will refund the security deposit in the week following the charter. If there are any damages the value of these damages will be assessed and the balance of the security deposit refunded after these costs have been deducted.

The VO65, the Volvo Open yachts
The VO65s refer to the category of racing yachts created specifically for the 2014-15 Volvo Ocean Race, and subsequently used again in the 2017-18 Volvo Ocean Race and Ocean Race 2023. The VO65s replaced the Volvo Open 70 class yachts used in previous editions of the competition. These high-performance yachts, designed to challenge the oceans in a global competition, have captivated sailing enthusiasts around the world.
Design and Performance
These yachts are designed to face the most extreme ocean conditions. These yachts are known for their exceptional performance and their ability to navigate through stormy seas with speed and agility. Here are some of the main features of the VO65 yachts:
VO65s have a length of approximately 20 meters (65 feet). This dimension is designed to balance speed and maneuverability, allowing the yachts to sail efficiently through diverse ocean conditions. This measurement is a key specification for the class and ensures that all yachts comply with a uniform size , which is crucial for fairness and competitiveness in events such as the Volvo Ocean Race and the Ocean Race.
Structural design
The hull design is optimized to deliver exceptional performance in a variety of sea conditions . They can face strong winds, rough seas and long ocean crossings with confidence. Their shape is designed to provide speed and stability. Regarding the keel , the maximum draft has been increased from 4.5 to 4.7 meters, which means a longer and lighter keel.
In terms of structure, the Volvo Ocean 65 has eight bulkheads in its interior, as opposed to the four present in the Volvo 70. This increase represents a more resistant and robust structure, capable of withstanding greater demands and speeds. Additionally, it incorporates a reverse bow designed to maximize the length at the waterline and increase hull speed, although this design leads to greater water ingress on board.
Sail Configuration
The VO65s feature an efficient sail configuration that allows teams to adjust their sailing according to wind conditions. With the exception of the storm jib, all sails could vary in weight thanks to North Sails' 3Di process. It should be noted tha t the use of carbon in the sails is prohibited , as it could interfere with satellite signals, which are crucial for communication and data transfer. Each team was allowed to purchase two sails of each type for the regatta and another six for training before the start of the competition, with the restriction of only being able to purchase two mainsails.
Advanced Technology
They incorporate cutting-edge technology in navigation, communication and energy management systems. With a spectacular multimedia system on board, featuring a set of five static cameras and two links, working together to cover all possible angles. These cameras are remotely controllable, and the addition of new microphones enables audio recording in various locations. In addition, they h ave increased protection against wind and water , allowing interviews to be conducted even on the deck of the vessel.
Reduced Crew Size
Although they can carry a full crew, VO65s are designed to be efficiently handled by smaller crews, requiring highly specialized tactical and navigational skills on the part of the participants. These characteristics make VO65 yachts impressive machines in ocean racing, challenging the limits of naval design and sailing ability in some of the most demanding conditions on the planet.
The Volvo Ocean Race
It is a world-renowned regatta that attracts elite international teams, each composed of experienced and passionate sailors. The ability to maneuver these high-tech yachts in extreme conditions is key to success in this challenging race. Each leg of the Volvo Ocean Race is a test of endurance, tactical skill and determination. The VO65s become the protagonists of thrilling moments as they sail across oceans, facing strong winds and rough seas in their quest for ultimate victory. The VO65s are not only a marvel of naval engineering, but also embody the passion and courage of sailors who dare to challenge the limits of the ocean. The Volvo Ocean Race continues to be a thrilling maritime odyssey that tests these yachts and their intrepid crews, taking high-performance sailing to exciting new horizons.

Volvo Ocean Race : Almost as fast as 100-foot record holder "Comanche"
Tatjana Pokorny
· 25.05.2018
In the battle for a new 24-hour record in the Volvo Ocean Race, the leading boats have repeatedly outdone each other over the past few days on the ninth leg from Newport to Cardiff. Simeon Tienpont's team AkzoNobel currently holds the new impressive record with 601.63 nautical miles at an average speed of 25.8 knots. If you compare this distance with the world record set by Jim Clark's American "Comanche" in 2015, there's not much left, even though the VO65 yachts are a whopping 35 feet shorter. "Comanche" managed 618.01 nautical miles three years ago.
The previous records from the Volvo Ocean Race have long since been surpassed. In 2008, skipper Torben Grael and his team managed 596.6 nautical miles in 24 hours on the 70-footer "Ericsson 4". For comparison, the 24-hour record for single-handed sailors set last year by Alex Thomson with his Imoca "Hugo Boss": 536.81 nautical miles at an average boat speed of 22.36 knots.
As much as the crews have used the speed to make rapid progress towards the Welsh destination harbour of Cardiff, they are now dreading entering the flat zone that blocks their way past Fastnet Rock and on to the British west coast. The two front runners, AkzoNobel and Team Brunel, have already slowed down accordingly, reaching speeds of only 11 or 12 knots on Saturday morning. Almost 40 or more nautical miles behind them, the pursuers were still travelling at between 16 and 18 knots, but also have some ground to make up and will soon be caught in the weaker winds themselves.
A good 600 nautical miles before reaching the stage harbour, the two Dutch boats were separated by just over four nautical miles on the sixth day of the stage. Behind AkzoNobel, Charles Caudrelier's Dongfeng Race Team was in third place on Saturday morning, more than eleven nautical miles ahead of the fourth-placed team, Vestas 11th Hour Racing. Still in fifth place, the Spanish team Mapfre, which leads the overall standings, struggled to catch up with the leading group. Dee Caffari's Team Turn the Tide on Plastic followed 79 nautical miles behind the Dutch team. David Witt's team Sun Hung Kai / Scallywag was 108.3 nautical miles behind, but was still unable to close the gap significantly.
