With few exceptions, in Spain and Mallorca only 11 passengers are allowed and are not considered professional crew, regardless of the length of the yacht. There are brands of yachts of excellent quality. We have made a selection of the best brands, such as Sunseeker, Cranchi, Ulstein among others, and of course, you can also charter a princess yacht in Mallorca with Alcudia Bay Boat Rental. This type of yacht comes from an English shipyard founded in 1965, with naval architects as famous as Bernard Olesinski, who in the 80s gave a strategic turn to the brand. Princess Yachts was also a pioneer among European shipyards in obtaining ISO 14001 certification in recognition of its efforts to reduce its environmental impact.

MOTOR YACHT CHARTER IN MALLORCA

Why charter motor yachts? After 12 years of chartering motor boats in Mallorca, the time has come to expand our experience and specialization in motor yacht charter. Small has become tiny, what we considered modest has now become minor. The extraordinary dimensions of motor yachts translate into comfort and well-being and, in the event of any unforeseen event, a motor yacht allows you to get out of the most challenging contingency in a fast, safe and totally reliable way. For all these reasons we have selected the yachts with the best motor brands, checked by official technical services, because the certainty of your safety is the source of our tranquility.

SUPERYACHTS IN MALLORCA

We are aware that there are larger super yachts in Mallorca than the ones we offer, but they are not located in fixed harbors as the ones we offer are. udia Bay Boat Rental offers. Normally, the superyachts are located temporarily in Croatia, on the French Riviera, in Naples or even in the Caribbean during the summer season and only a small part of the summer in the Balearic Islands. Our superyachts are available at all times in Mallorca, in port, mostly in the bay of Alcudia. This provides much greater availability in the charter of our mega yachts, without logistical problems, without a “maybe” for an answer and with the guarantee of excellence that only Alcudia Bay Boat Rental offers.

CHARTER A YACHT A WEEK

As we have already mentioned, you can not only charter a yacht for a day, but you can also charter your favourite yacht for weeks. This option will give you the chance to discover all that Mallorca has to offer, which is a lot: from Andratx to Pollensa, passing through the Sierra de Tramuntana, the largest mountain range in Mallorca and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or the incomparable bays of Alcudia or Pollensa, where its turquoise waters are calm and transparent, to the delight of contemplating the Levante Mountain range from the yacht, famous for its vitality and for the variety of species and biological richness. The Levante area, with its innumerable coves, similar to those of Menorca, is one of the favorite locations. You will be able to see Palma Cathedral from the sea, an authentic Levantine Gothic temple that overlooks the Roman Renaissance walls. All this and much more can be seen during your stay on board our megayachts. In addition, you will have the opportunity to have fun at the leisure attractions of each destination, including the capital, Palma de Mallorca, if you wish. Why rent a hotel when you can charter a yacht for a week and stay in a location with all kinds of luxuries and comforts with exclusive service just looking after your needs?

YACHT HIRE IN MALLORCA: YOUR OWN CORNER OF LUXURY ON THE SEA

What if I get tired of the yacht? You won’t get tired, the large yachts behave very well with the swell, reducing it until you feel a sense of calm sea. As additional extras to guarantee your entertainment, on many of our yachts you can enjoy jetskis, paddle surfing, snorkeling equipment, tender and even a kitchen service on board, to name just a few. Boring, isn’t it? It’s impossible. Don’t think twice, charter one of our yachts in Mallorca and enjoy your own corner of luxury on the sea. You won’t regret it!

The Balearics islands yacht charters

The Balearics islands yacht charters

Strategically positioned on ancient trading routs between  Europe and Africa, these islands got their fair share of invaders:  Greeks, Romans, Turks, etc. Christian kings, Arab rulers and Jewish  merchants have all left their mark there. With a yacht charter in  Mallorca you can easily explore its diverse architectural heritage, in  colorful fiestas, ceremonies and cuisine.

Like mainland of Spain, the Balearics Islands have been inhabited  since pre-historic times. So many invaders laid claim to them at various  points in history. Both Catalan and Castilian Spanish are spoken in the  Balearics Islands, which has been an autonomous region since 1983.

One of the Balearic Islands yacht charter bases is located in  Mallorca, a beautiful mountainous island, with rolling hills, sandy  beaches and stalagmite caves. It's landscape, culture and entertainment  offers a wide range of experiences during your sailing vacation. And it  is also by far the most culturally rich.

The great Polish composer Frederic Chopin stayed at the monastery of  Valldemossa with his lover Aurora Dupin, better known as the French  novelist George Sand, in the winter of 1838, where he composed his 24  preludes. The English poet Robert Graves hosted Pablo Picasso and actors  Alec Guiness and Peter Ustinov at his house. The painter and sculptor  Joan Miro also found his home here. His works are on display in the  Fundacio Pilar i Joan Miro, on the outskirts of Palma.

Yacht charter Mallorca is incredibly diverse in its landscape,  architecture, culture or just entertainment. There is so much to enjoy  in Palma during a sailing vacation: from stunning nature reserves and  charming fishing villages to picturesque ruins and impressive country  estates. With bareboat or skippered charter you'll get whatever you want  here: wonderful beaches and vibrant nightlife with dancing and music,  or rural retreats with sedate and peaceful atmosphere.

Mallorca sailing conditions

The climate is mild, typically Mediterranean, with dry and sunny  summer. During July and August, average temperature raises to 75 – 85 F  with stable light winds from 5 to 15 knots. The winds are predominantly  southeast on the west part of the island and northwest on the eat part.  July marks the beginning of the peak sailing season, which will last  till the end of September. Cold winters are very rare in this area, with  average temperature around 60 F, Palma boat rentals are available the  year round. Nights are cold, but days are mostly sunny with partial  clouds. The highest rainfall is usually between October and December.  All in all, the weather is very pleasant and mild all year around.

Winter navigation

The average temperature in December-January in navigation area  near Balearic Islands is mild. The average max temperature is 18 C and  the minimum temperature 13 C. But it’s quite frequent to have a few days  with 20 C or above.

It’s necessary to be equipped with warm clothes and waterproof  jackets, but don’t be afraid it is just a precaution and if sunny and on  land, you will have chance to wear T-shirt.

All boats are supplied with bed linen and warm blankets; additional  heaters are also available to make the main saloon and cabins warm and  toasty in almost any conditions.

Nevertheless you should keep in mind that it is better to bring all  staff in soft bags or backpacks because space on the boat is limited.  Take the most comfortable clothes (wool socks, wool sweater, waterproof  jackets, water resistant shoes, wool hats), sunglasses, and protective  sun cream, personal medicines, toilette accessories and gloves.

Places of interest

Places of interest

The island's north-west coast is especially scenic, with its  terraced cliff sides and hidden coves. Once you venture away from  crowds, this area will give you a pleasant sense of isolation. It's  craggy coast is dotted with watch towers, ancient monasteries and  churches and picturesque idyllic villages.

Sun Marroig, estate of 18th century, has been converted into a museum with a great collection of pottery and paintings.

Mirador del Ses Animes, the former defense tower, standing on a steep rock, is visible from far away.

Port d'Andratx, used to be a small fishing port, now harbors  expensive yachts for the rich and famous. The cute town, with its white  shuttered houses and cobbled streets, lies in a valley, while the old  watch towers are formidably standing on the hill above it.

Another popular attraction is the pearl factory at nearby Manacor.

On the island's east coast, near the fishing port of Porto Cristo,  are the Caves of Drach, which contain one of the world's largest  underground lakes.

Mallorca's Caves

Mallorca's Caves

Caves in Mallorca are formed out of limestone rocks. Some are the  size of a cathedral with dripstones that form fantastic forms and are  illuminated for better impression. Once they provided shelter for early  settlers or hiding places for pirates. Although Mallorca has about 200  caves, only a few of them are open to public. And it's worth taking a  tour! There is a number of caves with underground lakes. They have great  acoustics and concerts can be performed by the musicians seated in  boats.

Beaches of Mallorca

Beaches of Mallorca

Mallorca has about 80 beaches. The best are around Badia de Palma.  Some of the beaches include restaurants, fun parks, water sports and  beachside bars. But it is still possible to find secluded beaches:  however they may have quite a few facilities and could be difficult to  reach.

Palma de Mallorca

Palma de Mallorca

Palma over the years has transformed itself from a provincial  town into a metropolis. With a quarter of a million residents, it is  Mallorca's main city and the capital of Baleares province. It captivates  you by the evident signs of its rich history: dominant cathedrals,  grand public buildings, exquisite private mansions.

On a hill overlooking the port there is Bellver Castle, a fine  example of the 14th century military architecture. Caiman Forum Palma,  built in 1902, the most impressive 20th century building, now serves as a  cultural center. Palau Reial de I'Almudaina, the former royal residence  built in 1309, is now turned into a museum. And here is the Gothic  Cathedral, built of golden sandstone, is one of the most breathtaking  buildings in Spain. Palma Cathedral is one of the best-sited cathedrals  anywhere - it is positioned high on the sea wall towering over the  harbor. The construction began in 1230 and finished in 1601. At the  beginning of the century Antonio Gaudi remodeled most of its interior.

Among other structures of interest are Arab Baths of the 10th  century, Church of San Francisco of the 13th century and The Forn Teatro  (Theater Bakery), well-known for its impressive facade and it's  delicious pastries.

Spanish cuisine is as varied as the country itself. Good  quality local cuisine is always available. Most of the Balearic dishes  are Catalan in origin: ensaimadas  - spiral pastries dusted with icing  sugar or sobrasadas - spicy pork pates.

But the influence of each occupying force over the centuries - Arabs,  French or British – also has left its mark on the local cuisine, as  well. Sobrasada - a sausage-meat spread. Embutits – cured meats.  Surrounded by water, there is no wonder that seafood (especially lobster  and cray fish) predominates here. Caldereta de llagosta (lobster stue),  once a simple fishermen's dish is now a delicacy. The classic Mallorcan  dish is Pa Amb Oli, a slice of toasted bread rubbed with garlic and  drizzled with local olive oil. Tapas are popular bite-sized snacks,  often served hot with chilled wine or beer.

The must-see attraction are two cave complexes called “Coves del  Drach and Coves dels Hams” that offer and incredible experience of  Mallorca’s natural beauty

Cala Figuera

Cala Figuera

More than in any other part of Mallorca, Cala Figueres retains the  atmosphere of an authentic fishing port. Here you will see white washed  houses on the water’s edge and fishermen fixing their nets. It’s a good  idea to arrive early and buy some catch of the day.

Cala Santanyi

Cala Santanyi

Cala Santanyi located on the south-eastern part of Mallorca, is a  popular beach and diving area. Local diving school offers great diving  courses so or you can just bask in the crystal-clear water. There are  several resort style hotels in the area

Cala D’or

This place is famous for many hidden calla’s and coves in the  area. For the food lovers, Cala D’Or offers a number of diverse  restaurants and busy bars.

Cala Ratjada

Cala Ratjada

Sailing east of Mallorca you will find this small fishing  village known for its fine white sand beaches, pristine clear water and  turquoise sea. If you’re looking for a slightly more serene experience  take a short walk away from the beach to the lighthouse at Punta de  Capdepera which offers fantastic view over to Menorca.

For the foodies, take a lunch trip to Es Coll d’Os which has a great  atmosphere and prides itself on home grown food. For a traditional meal,  Reco D’es Moll servers the finest Tapas in the area.

Sailing to the north tip of Mallorca you will find Pollenca, a  well sheltered anchorage, but there is also a marina if you’re looking  for some creature comforts. You should also check to see if there are  any festivals or fairs happening whilst you’re visiting as they are  popular and frequent here.

Mahon

Mao-Mahon is the capital city of Menorca. It also known as the  second deepest natural harbor in the world; 5km long and 900 meters  wide. Sailing to Mahón harbor you will see La Mola Fortress, former  military prison during the Franco dictatorship and the Saint Felip  Castle. These sites certainly make entrance to the harbor quite an  experience. Once you are in Mahon you can choose either to take a  mooring, anchor or shelter in the harbor.

Near Fornells bay you will notice couple of pretty coves and three  small islands home to the indigenous blue green lizard 'S'argantana  Balear'. These coves and islands can only be reached by boat.

Must try local cuisine. Dinner in Fornells is a real feast for fish  lovers. This place offers number of fantastic fish restaurants which  Fornells has become renowned for.

Ciutadella

This is a former capital of Menorca, a small charming town,  with old cobbled streets and reminiscent of a bygone era. Entering the  harbor, you will be amazed by stunning beauty of this town. Take a  mooring in front of the pier that is lined with bars and restaurants, so  you can literally hop off your yacht straight into a bar; and then roll  back out again.

The old town Cuitadella it's definitely worth visiting. You will  reach it by heading up some cobbled stairs where you will find many  remains of what the town used to be like, including the still standing  Cathedral of Menorca in the old town.

Cultural heritage, shopping, leisure and gastronomy in Palma

The most important ports of Mallorca

Ports of mallorca.

Puerto Portals

Just 10 km from the centre of Palma and 16 km from the airport, Puerto Portals is one of the most prestigious marinas in the Mediterranean. Restaurants, bars, jewellery shops and fashion boutiques surround this luxurious place, which is an essential destination during your yacht charter.

Puerto Portals is a reference point for Mediterranean gastronomy. The aroma of its dishes enchants everyone who visits it, and you will find some of the most emblematic restaurants on the island here.

Port d'Andratx

Port d'Andratx is located on the south coast of Mallorca. It is a small, well-kept harbour and a focal point for luxury tourism and yacht charters.

Port d'Andratx has several tourist attractions nearby, such as the island of Dragonera. In this quiet and exclusive port, you can visit one of the best beach clubs in Mallorca, Gran Foiles, a place for wellness and relaxation in the open air with a restaurant, solarium, swimming pool and cocktails.

Port of Soller

A holiday aboard a luxury yacht in Mallorca should always include a stop in the port of Sóller. Sóller is a beautiful Mallorcan village located in the "Valley of Gold".

One of the island's main attractions begins and ends in the village of Sóller. It is the wooden railway that connects the village with the capital and was originally used to transport fruit from the valley to Palma.

Bay of Pollença

The bay of Pollença stands out for its native botanical richness and crystal clear waters, aspects that have made it one of the spots where captains like to drop anchor to spend the day, perfect for having a bit of fun with the water sports activities your yacht offers and relaxing.

As you would expect, the Bay of Pollença offers a wide range of gastronomic and leisure facilities of a high standard to all those who choose to spend their holidays on board a yacht in Mallorca.

The small coves of Cala d'Or are world-famous, their hiking trails allow you to discover their natural wealth, and you have the option of visiting the Mondragó Natural Park or the famous Drach Caves, a network of natural caves of incomparable visual richness.

Luxury and well-being are guaranteed in Cala d'Or with its top-class leisure facilities, which include the possibility of access to exclusive spaces such as the Yacht Club Cala d'Or, a complex that includes a restaurant with privileged views of the bay.

Places to see in Mallorca

A yacht charter in Mallorca is your passport to a holiday at sea, surrounded by luxury and comfort . In addition to the gastronomy, the privileged climate and the sandy beaches with crystal clear waters, we will take you to some places you should definitely visit.

The Tramontana Mountains: The Sierra de la Tramontana runs along the western part of the island, and while you stop off in Puerto de Soller with your charter yacht, don't miss to visit some villages like Valldemossa, where you can enjoy some of the most beautiful views on the island, or take a tram ride through some of Mallorca's most idyllic natural areas.

Palma Cathedral: When you arrive in Palma on your luxury yacht, you will be impressed by the majesty of the cathedral, which, together with the Almudaina Palace, forms the most famous architectural ensemble on the island. Palma Cathedral is just a few metres awa from the sea, and artists of the calibre of Gaudí and Miguel Barceló contributed to its construction.

The Dragon Caves : Your yacht charter holiday in Mallorca will have been worth it just for this visit alone. One of your fondest holiday memories will undoubtedly be a visit to the Dragon Caves in Porto Cristo. This underground rock network is more than 1200 metres long and 25 kilometres deep. Mallorca-based captain of sunken Lynch family yacht put under investigation

Prosecutors have opened probe over manslaughter, shipwreck, crowdfunding site set up in mallorca to support the crew of sicily tragedy, mallorca rushes to support the crew of sicily tragedy.

Italian prosecutors have placed under investigation the Mallorca -based captain of the superyacht that sank off Sicily last week in a storm, killing British tech magnate Mike Lynch and six other people, a judicial source said today. James Cutfield, a 51-year old New Zealand national, is being investigated for manslaughter and shipwreck, the source said, confirming earlier reports by Italian media.

Being placed under investigation in Italy does not imply guilt and does not mean formal charges will necessarily follow. Notices to people under investigation need to be sent out before authorities can carry out the autopsies on the bodies of the dead. The decision was made after Cutfield was interrogated for a second time. Reuters has been unable to contact Cutfield.

More related news.

It is still unclear whether other members of the crew or other people will also be put under investigation along with the captain. The British-flagged Palma -based Bayesian , a 56-metre-long (184-foot) yacht, was carrying 22 people when it capsized and sank on Monday within minutes of being hit by a pre-dawn storm while anchored off northern Sicily. Fifteen people survived, including Lynch's wife, whose company owned the Bayesian.

Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, was among those who died. While the yacht had been hit by a sudden meteorological event, it was plausible that crimes of multiple manslaughter and causing a shipwreck through negligence had been committed, the head of the public prosecutor's office of Termini Imerese, Ambrogio Cartosio, said on Saturday.

Maritime law gives a captain full responsibility for the ship, crew, and all on board. Cutfield and his eight surviving crew members have made no public comment yet on the disaster. "The Bayesian was built to go to sea in any weather", Franco Romani, a nautical architect who was part of the team that designed it told daily La Stampa in an interview published on Monday. He said the yacht could have taken on water from a side hatch that was left open.. However, all of the crew many of which are based in Mallorca, including the captain, are free to return home.

Deutsche Luxusyacht fährt jungen Mann tot (20) – und flüchtet vom Tatort

Stand: 27.08.2024, 19:10 Uhr

  • The six bodies found during the search in recent days were all in cabins on the left-hand - and highest - side of the ship. Five were found in the first cabin and the sixth was found in the third;
  • Prosecutors said the six passengers were most likely asleep when the boat sank;
  • The probe is now focusing on the crew and their responsibilities, with the captain set to undergo more questioning.

Monday 19 August

The Bayesian yacht, flying a British flag, sinks at around 5am local time when the area was hit by a tornado.

Fifteen people are rescued from the 56 metre vessel - including a mother and baby - but another seven remain missing.

One body, later confirmed to be the yacht's chef Recaldo Thomas, is found near the wreck.

It emerges that British technology tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah are among six people that remain missing.

Tuesday 20 August

The search continues for the six tourists missing.

It is reported that among those missing are Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo; and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

Police divers try to reach the hull of the ship, resting at a depth of 50 metres.

Italy's fire brigade Vigili del Fuoco say early inspections of the wreck were "unsuccessful" because of limited access to the bridge and furniture obstructing passages.

The operation is later described as "complex", with divers limited to 12-minute underwater shifts.

Tributes pour in for Mr Thomas, with his friend Gareth Williams saying: "I can talk for everyone that knew him when I say he was a well-loved, kind human being with a calm spirit."

Wednesday 21 August

The search for the six people unaccounted for enters a third day, with crews carrying out inspections of the yacht's internal hull.

A team of four British inspectors from the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) arrive in Porticello to look at the site of the sinking.

A helicopter is drafted in to help with the search effort and remotely controlled underwater vehicles are being used, with naval units and cave divers also taking part in the search.

Five bodies are found inside the yacht on Wednesday afternoon. Only four of them are brought to shore.

Body bags are seen being taken to Porticello in the afternoon where dozens of emergency services staff wait.

Searches finish for the day just before 7.30pm.

Thursday 22 August

The search resumes for the remaining missing person.

The body of the fifth missing person, found but not recovered the previous day, is brought to shore.

A fire service boat with flashing blue lights returns with a blue body bag to the port of Porticello just after 8.45am local time on Thursday.

Tributes pour in for Mr Lynch and Mr and Mrs Bloomer after they are identified as having died.

The search is called off at around 8pm in Sicily, with divers expected to begin again at 6.30am on Friday.

Friday 23  August

The search continues for the final person missing from the wreck of the Bayesian, Hannah Lynch.

Vincenzo Zagarola, of the Italian Coastguard, says the search for Hannah has not been "easy or quick", comparing the sunken yacht to an "18-storey building full of water".

The coastguard confirms in the late morning that her body has been found.

A green body bag is brought to the port of Porticello from the site of the sinking.

A spokesperson announces on behalf of the Lynch family that they are "devastated" and "in shock" after the deaths of Mike and Hannah.

Hannah's sister Esme pays tribute to her "little angel".

Saturday 24 August

A press conference is held in the court of an Italian town, Termini Imerese.

Public prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio tells reporters that his office has opened an initial investigation against unknown persons into manslaughter and negligent shipwreck.

As the focus now turns to the manslaughter investigation, here's another reminder of the seven victims of the sinking and the 15 people who survived.

A close friend of the Lynch family has added to the chorus of tributes for British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, who died in Monday's superyacht sinking.

Susannah Gurdun, who lives in Suffolk, recalled being "daunted" when she first met Mr Lynch at a dinner party, before discovering he was "so much more than the corporate cliche".

"He was riveting.  He was funny, and kind, and endlessly interesting; capable of talking about anything and everything," she said.

Ms Gardun said the businessman also had a "thrilling ability" to make complicated subjects "accessible to those of us less blessed with a science acumen".

"In particular, he was wonderful with children.  I will never forget hearing him explain to a group of them - including our ten year old son - the physics of why the sky went pink at sunset," she said.

She went on describe Mr Lynch as a "true genius" and "phenomenal creative".

Ms Gardun said his daughter Hannah was also showing "serious literary promise", and added that it was "beyond tragic that we will never know where her own particular brilliance might have led".

"I still feel blessed to have shared that time with them in Spain.  Not just because I witnessed Mike’s incredible storytelling; but because I was given a chance of understanding what that moment said about all four of them as a united vibrant loving family," she said.

"He was an extraordinary human being and it was - truly - a privilege to have known him."

A yacht crew member who survived the sinking has paid tribute to Hannah Lynch, calling her a "diamond in a sea of stars".

Sasha Murray, chief stewardess of the Bayesian, has released a statement after divers recovered the final missing body from the wreckage, which is believed to be 18-year-old Hannah.

"Those who knew her will know that Hannah was a diamond in a sea of stars," she said.

"Bright, beautiful and always shining. What most people may not have seen was the extraordinarily strong, deep and loving relationship she shared with her parents, whom she adored more than anything.

"While swimming with them she often said, if anything ever happened she would save them.

"I have no doubt that the Irish, Latina fire that burns in her soul kept that spirited determination alive."

Ms Murray's statement comes as a new image of Hannah Lynch and her father Mike Lynch is released:

Prosecutors announced in this morning's news conference that they have opened a manslaughter and negligent shipwreck investigation.

Officials were unable to answer several queries from the media, saying they needed time to establish the facts, but what are the key questions facing prosecutors?

Why weren't passengers who remained on board the vessel warned about escaping from the yacht?

The prosecutor in charge of the case, Raffaele Cammarano, suggested that some passengers may have been asleep when others were awake.

Asked why they were not woken up or alerted, he said that is something investigators are trying to work out from the statements of the survivors.

He called it an "essential" part of the inquiry.

Why were several of the passengers in one cabin?

The press conference heard several bodies onboard the sunken yacht were found in a single cabin which was not theirs.

Mr Cammarano said investigators currently do not know the reason for them being discovered in the same cabin.

The chief of the Palermo fire service, Bentivoglio Fiandra, said the yacht pinned to the right and suggested people tried to go on the other side, taking refuge in cabins in the higher part of the wreck.

Why did the boat sink?

The vessel had been deemed "unsinkable" by its manufacturer - Italian shipyard Perini Navi.

The Bayesian was hit by a downburst, according to Mr Cammarano, which are powerful winds that descend from a thunderstorm and spread out quickly once they hit the ground.

Officials will look into the safety equipment on the sunken vessel.

Mr Cammarano was asked about whether there is a black box and if the hatches were left open.

He said investigators do not have exact information about the black box and that the first phase of the inquiry will look into it.

Why were nearby vessels not similarly affected?

Another yacht, the Sir Robert BP, was about 150 to 200 metres from the Bayesian when extreme weather hit.

Its crew helped to rescue 15 people from the stricken vessel.

Italian officials said they would be looking at how the downburst could affect one vehicle and not other nearby vessels.

What weather warnings was the Bayesian alerted to?

Maritime director of western Sicily, Rear Admiral Raffaele Macauda, said the weather at the time of the yacht's sinking was abnormal and there was nothing to suggest such an extreme situation would arise.

He said there were forecasts of winds and a storm alert, but there was no warning of a tornado.

"Given that the conditions were such, there wasn't anything to suggest there could be an extreme situation arising," he said.

"There are vessels that can monitor, after all, these events and one would have thought that the captain had taken precautions."

How long will it take to recover the sailing vessel?

Mr Macauda could not confirm how long it would take to retrieve the shipwreck of the sunken yacht.

"Everything depends on the availability of the owners and the timeframe of the retrieval of the wreck and of course all that has to be submitted to the port authorities and in parallel of course there will be the inquiry results and it's only really then that we will be able to authorise the operation," he said.

"I can't say, like some experts who have already spoken on the subject, [said] that it will be eight weeks."

He made clear that the owners will bear the full cost of retrieval, although he could not estimate the figure.

Italian authorities detailed the challenging and meticulous rescue operation to recover the six missing people from the Bayesian wreck (see 9.18am post).

But why was the five-day search so difficult?

More on this morning's press conference.

One of the main updates from prosecutors was that they have opened manslaughter and shipwreck investigations after the deaths of seven people in the Bayesian sinking.

Watch the announcement below...

Prosecutors have given a lengthy news conference this morning on their investigation into the sinking of the Bayesian.

Read the full report on the prosecutors' probe below...

Marine investigator James Wilkes has been speaking to Sky News after this morning's press conference.

"Naturally, there are more questions than there are substantive answers at the moment - that's the nature of investigative work.

"Something forced that yacht to roll beyond its nominal stability limits, such that it wasn't able to right itself with the ingress of a certain amount of seawater that was coming into the yacht.

"So the investigators are going to ask themselves one initial question - what must the conditions have been for this to happen?

"Then they are going to look at the contributing factors to the yacht, sinking, and, and the unfortunate loss of life."

Prosecutors said this morning that the future of the investigation is reliant on recovering the wreck.

Mr Wilkes said the yacht is a "major piece of physical evidence in and of itself."

"It's lying at 50 metres, which is a recoverable depth.

"If it was significantly deeper, then I'm not sure they'd be considering salvage at this stage or certainly, the salvage question would be a lot more complicated to answer.

"But if there was the ability to raise that yacht in one piece safely, then it gives the investigators physically more to look at."

Mr Wilkes said he was unsure if the yacht would have a "black box" - called a voyage data recorder in shipping.

"It would record things like GPS position, heading speed, engine telemetry, whether the radars were on, what they were recording, alarms, communications from the yacht itself, any audio on the bridge.

"But more often than not, these are on merchant ships. The yacht was a commercial yacht in the sense that it could be chartered out so it's quite possible it has a voyage data recorder on, but I'm not sure that it does. I don't know that as a matter of fact," he said.

56m perini navi sailing yacht BAYESIAN yacht sinks off coast of sicily

Live updates: Seven dead in 56m superyacht Bayesian sinking tragedy

Seven people have died in the Bayesian sinking disaster. These include the six missing people who were inside the yacht when it sank, as well as a seventh person who was located shortly after the disaster. The seventh person is understood to be the yacht's chef, Recaldo Thomas. The other six are:

  • British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, once dubbed 'Britain's Bill Gates'
  • Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, Hannah
  • Morgan Stanley's chairman, Jonathan Bloomer
  • Judy Bloomer, wife of Morgan Stanley chairman
  • Chris Morvillo, a lawyer working for London-based law firm Clifford Chance
  • Neda Morvillo, an American jewellery designer and Chris' wife

It is understood that the yacht was being used to celebrate Lynch's recent victory in a 13-year £8 billion fraud acquittal.

No one remembers the mast snapping before 56m superyacht Bayesian sunk, says crew

No one recalls seeing the mast snap on board the 56-metre Perini Navi sailing yacht Bayesian which sank off the Italian island of Sicily on 19 August. The eyewitness account of a crewmember on board the vessel, which was obtained by BOAT International , said that the boat was struck by a freak weather event which led to the yacht heeling at around 20 degrees to starboard. As crewmembers were securing items, the heeling angle began to increase rapidly until the yacht started taking on water and sank rapidly.

The crewmembers who were up on deck were able to evacuate the yacht with minor injuries. The yacht is understood to have sunk in just twelve minutes, and it is believed that a "major ingress" of water from the top down would have caused the sinking, according to a captain who wishes to remain anonymous. This is based on the fact that no breaches have been reported in the yacht's hull, and the fact that the yacht should have been able to remain afloat with two flooded compartments.

"Very difficult to understand what could have overwhelmed a vessel of that size" says captain of sistership

The captain of the sistership to the sunken 56-metre Perini Navi sailing yacht Bayesian has said it is "very difficult to understand what could have overwhelmed a vessel of that size" and called the 56-metre Perini Navi series "bulletproof".

David Hutchinson, captain of Rosehearty , said he had taken the yacht around the world multiple times and he had "total faith in the boat".  "We've been to Antarctica and Chile, and we've had her in 70 knots of wind," he says, and the vessel had never put them in a situation that felt unmanageable.

However, Hutchinson noted there were differences between Bayesian and Rosehearty ; notably, Bayesian's  74-metre mast, which would have been heavier and added increased windage. The yacht's layout was also different, with guest accommodation on Bayesian located further forward.

Live updates

  • During a news conference on Saturday morning (24 August), prosecutors confirmed they are in the early stages of investigating a "crime hypothesis" of culpable shipwreck and manslaughter. Authorities also said the yacht likely sunk because of a downburst (powerful wind that descends from a thunderstorm), rather than a waterspout.
  • A search and rescue for six missing people has concluded. The final missing person is understood to be Hannah Lynch.
  • According to Reuters, six bodies have now been found in the sunken yacht. These include Mike Lynch, a British technology entrepreneur who co-founded Autonomy Corporation and founded Invoke Capital, although Italian authorities have not confirmed this.
  • One person was found immediately after the yacht sunk, and this is understood to be the yacht's chef.
  • Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, and a one-year-old are among the fifteen people rescued along with Bayesian' s captain, James Cutfield.
  • Another sailing vessel in the area, the 42-metre Sir Robert Baden Powell ,  stepped in to offer assistance in the initial rescue.
  • Divers have been able to reach Bayesian' s sunken hull, which lies at 45 metres of depth about half a mile from the coast. The yacht had the largest aluminium masts of any sailing yacht on the water.
  • Eyewitnesses in the area reported "hurricane" conditions off the coast but local weather websites did not indicate any severe squall, which suggests that the weather event was not forecast.
  • At around 5am local time on 19 August, Bayesian was hit by bad weather and sunk.  The sailing yacht was anchored or idle at the time of the incident.

Built in Italy by renowned builder Perini Navi and delivered in 2008, the yacht's naval architecture was developed by Ron Holland Design while the interior design is by Rémi Tessier . She was formerly known as Salute and was last refitted in 2016. She was listed for sale earlier this year, according to BOATPro . The yacht had accommodation for nine guests and 12 crew.

America's Cup sailing is around the corner. Did you know it has ties to North Jersey?

4-minute read.

Portrait of David M. Zimmer

The Olympics are over, but the oldest competition in international sports is just around the corner.

The America's Cup sailing event, founded in 1851, returned on Thursday with a preliminary regatta off the coast of Barcelona that sets the stage for a one-on-one final in October.

One of the challengers is a homegrown one: the New York Yacht Club.

Now headquartered deep in the heart of Manhattan, hosting club regattas out of Newport, Rhode Island, and having its racing team training in Pensacola, Florida, the club and America's Cup originator was initially based on the Hudson River. Its first clubhouse was in North Jersey.

Built in Hoboken in 1845, the Gothic cottage first stood by the waterside at Elysian Fields, near the bluff that holds Stevens Institute of Technology. John Cox Stevens, the club's first commodore, donated the land at the foot of 11th Street. His brother, Edwin Augustus Stevens, founded the university. Both were involved with the creation of the first winner of the America's Cup, a yacht named America.

America's Cup's founders

The brothers came from one of the most distinguished families in U.S. history. Their grandfather served in the Continental Congress, and their father, John Stevens, was a Revolutionary War colonel who became a pioneering entrepreneur and an inventor of steam engines and boats.

From their mansion overlooking the Hudson River and Manhattan Island, the colonel and his sons developed the first steam ferry to cross the Hudson. When Robert Fulton secured a monopoly on Hudson River steamship navigation, the Stevens family shifted its focus to other lucrative ventures. In 1809, the family's vessel Phoenix became the first steamer to operate offshore when it began service in Philadelphia.

Five years earlier, in 1804, a 19-year-old John Cox Stevens piloted the first propeller-driven boat. Shortly thereafter, he built a sailing yacht called Diver and raced it against fishing boats and ferries in New York Harbor for wagers. In 1844, he and his friends founded the New York Yacht Club aboard his yacht Gimcrack.

The clubhouse, which was modest compared with the club's current Beaux-Arts landmark in New York City, served as the center of club activities for 23 years, records show. That span covered the development, construction and trials of the yacht America.

America's Cup has North Jersey origins

The yacht America was designed by George Steers, a self-taught innovator of yacht design, to challenge the best in the United Kingdom. Its cotton duck sails were sourced from John Colt's mill in Paterson. When the yacht made it to Britain's Isle of Wight, the Royal Yacht Squadron organized a fleet race on Aug. 22, 1851. The winner received a silver trophy valued at 100 pounds sterling. They called it the Hundred Guinea Cup. It is now known as America's Cup, after the yacht that won it.

Within two months, John Cox Stevens and the syndicate that owned America had sold it and given the trophy to the club. The cup came with conditions. According to its formal Deed of Gift, it must serve as an everlasting prize for “friendly competition between foreign countries.” The cup's holder must welcome challengers.

The first challenger was the Royal Thames Yacht Club and a yacht called Cambria. The competition held in New York Harbor on Aug. 8, 1870, was won by the New York Yacht Club. The club went on to win every America's Cup match thereafter until 1983.

By then, the clubhouse was long gone. It survived calls for demolition in the early 20th century and in 1904 moved from its home just north of Castle Point in Hoboken to Glen Cove, Long Island, to serve as "Station 10." At a time, there were 11 stations along the club's racing and cruising route where members could land and load.

Vastly different competition

For the second half of the 20th century, the clubhouse was on loan and on display at Mystic Seaport, the maritime museum in Connecticut. Since the start of this century, it has sat on the grounds of the club's racing base Harbour Court, in Newport, Rhode Island. The club's America's Cup yacht, called Patriot, was built and designed in Rhode Island.

A far cry from America, a 101-foot schooner that was used by the U.S. Navy during the Civil War, the 75-foot-long Patriot relies on a pair of hydraulic hydrofoils on either side of the hull to seemingly fly above the ocean's surface at speeds of more than 50 miles per hour. Due to that technology, the modern America's Cup is a vastly different competition from what it was just 20 years ago. Still, at its core, the cup remains an event in which wind-powered vessels must chart an ocean course to victory.

The last cup was a disaster for the New York Yacht Club, which in team American Magic had one of three challengers for the title held by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. That cup's Patriot capsized in the round-robin qualifiers and, after major repairs, finished last in the event.

America's Cup 2024

This year, five challenger teams are taking on the cup holders from New Zealand. They include American Magic and the new Patriot, led by Olympic gold medalists Tom Slingsby, who won for Australia, and Paul Goodison, for Great Britain.

The first look at them in action comes during the final America's Cup preliminary regatta from Aug. 22 to 25. The match racing event will feature four races per day, with the top two yachts, technically classified as AC75s, advancing to a one-race, winner-takes-all final.

The results of the preliminary regatta have no impact on the America’s Cup standings. Still, they were crucial for shaping team strategy.

The New Zealand team, as the cup defender, has a straight path to the America's Cup, held from Oct. 12 to 21. The five defenders, however, must face off in the Challenger Selection Series from Aug. 29 to Oct 7 for the right to compete in the America's Cup best-of-13 match race final.

The races will be streamed free on the event’s website, YouTube and Facebook. Coverage is also available in the U.S. on ESPN+.
