Introduces young sailors to double-handed sailing The Club FJ is a tough, agile performer for beginners to elite sailors. The Club is a fantastic choice for clubs and junior programs looking to introduce young sailors to double-handed sailing with a spinnaker. Our Collegiate version (no spinnaker) is the most popular boat in college sailing; more collegiate sailing teams in North America sail our FJ than any other double-handed sailboat.

The International Flying Junior or FJ is a sailing dinghy which was originally designed in 1955 in the Netherlands by renowned boat designer Van Essen and Olympic sailor Conrad Gülcher. The FJ was built to serve as a training boat for the then Olympic-class Flying Dutchman. The FJ has a beam of 4’11” and an overall sail area of 100 square feet (9.3 m 2 ). These dimensions make the FJ an ideal class to teach young sailors the skills of boat handling and racing.

The Club FJ has a Vela gray hull and deck.

FJ SCV (East Coast, College, High School)

Description

The east coast high school & college fj.

Click Here to Request a Quote!

Zim Sailing's SCV FJ's are designed to meet the challenging demands of college, high school, camps, and other institutional programs. Often refered to as the SCV or School/Collegiate Version, our Collegiate FJ combines the proven performance capabilities of an FJ with added features that enhance the strength and durability of the boat. The FJ has become the standard dinghy for institutions across North America. The boat is agile and has the ability to sail in a wide range of conditions. The Zim Collegiate FJ dinghy has the same proven, durable lineage as the C420, ensuring a quality, competitive boat. This 'East Coast' style FJ SCV is main and jib only (no spinnaker) and features standard over the transom style rudder head and tiller. This is the standard for High School and College racing on the East Coast.

Hull and Deck

  • All thru deck mounted hardware is supported by tapped aluminum backing plates glassed to the inside of the boat which eliminates inspection ports.
  • Forestay chain plate, extruded aluminum with three ¼” fasteners thru bolted into an aluminum backing plate which add durability and strength to the boat.
  • Shroud chain plate is a forged eye strap supported with aluminum back-up bar under the rail for additional durability.
  • All flanges and hull to deck joints are bonded with Plexus methyl methacrylate structural adhesive to eliminate leaks and hull/deck separation. This is the strongest bonding agent on the market and Zim is the only company to use this to bond their boats.
  • Three stringers have been applied to the cockpit floor for added stiffness and to provide the perfect platform for skippers and crews to step across the boat for perfect maneuvers.
  • Elastomeric urethane bow bumpers are the industry standard for increased durability.
  • One-piece high-density urethane gasket retainer with cloth gaskets to increased durability and allow for easy maintenance.
  • Heavy duty rub rail for added durability. Standard duty rub rail is an option.
  • Filled stern rails are standard.
  • Harken 75mm carbo mainsheet blocks provide increased reliability.
  • Heavy Duty transom pintles are the longest lasting pintles on the market and the rudder retainer clip has a plastic tip to eliminate pinching fingers. The rudder comes with a lanyard to secure it to the boat.
  • Harken or Ronstan jib track with 57mm Harken carbo ratchet blocks. Track includes car retainer.
  • Tennis ball transom bailer is connected to an eye strap on the keelson for easy closure.
  • 4:1 Harken vang system which allows for easy adjustment by crews in team racing.
  • Horn cleat for the aft hiking strap will provide easy adjustment.
  • Jib tack quick pin with lanyard to eliminate pins being dropped in water.
  • Heavy duty webbing hiking straps for longer durability.
  • Selden boom with drilled and tapped screws to prevent block movement
  • External outhaul.
  • Selden boom spigot is fixed to the boom

I would say in the photo the crew should sit right together and forward. In light air you have kind of a draggy rear end you want to get it out of the water. Light air bow down trim. You know on the downwind legs to take the centerboard up right? Minimizes drag. Good luck have fun

@Simon Sexton sounds like weight means lots of wind needed. You may just be at a disadvantage in light air agains a couple of 120lb dripping wet competitors. Sail trim. Your image shows a fairly raked mast. Not sure about what is best on the FJ. In my M15 5 degrees was optimal. When going down wind we wanted the mast to be vertical so we sailed with a rather loose mast. The stays were not super tight. It could be the angles but it appears the boom slants down from the mast. I always try to set the rig with the boom parallel to the water. The center board is variable. It helps to stop you from slipping sideways. Pulling it up on may cause your boat to slip sideways. You need to adjust it based on conditions. 1/3 1/2 or 3/4 depends on what the boat is doing. In a blow you may want a bit of board down wind to maintain stability. Then practice your tacking. Make yourself smooth in the water. And plan your tactics. You should have an advantage over visiting Sailors as you know the water they need to learn where to sail based on conditions ie. tide, wind, etc. Good luck.

Check with some of the local Yacht Clubs and get into their Junior program or the High School Sailing program. They probably have lot's of stuff going on in 420s which will transfer over to the FJ.

1978. 20 year old FJ was my first sailboat. I didn't have a clue how to sail it. Well actually I did have a clue but it was wrong. My wife still thinks I am clueless, but that's another story.....

You know if you are dead downwind, crank on the outhaul. In DDW the sail is stalled so the goal is maximum projected area. Also DDW try heeling the boat to windward a bit. Also if you are near them pay attention to what the Kiwis are doing it sounds like it is less wrong that what you are doing. Also ask them over a beer they might tell you something

To slack the outhaul for a DDW run takes planing, timing and coordination to pull off without stopping the boom swing significantly mid-course change. You probably won't have time on a short course. You have an advantage of ballast due to your size, learn to use it. Keep the stick as vertical as possible. Also, get Jackdaw to advise you. I haven't read anyone else's posts on SBO that knows more about racing than him. Wax the bottom of your boat, if that's legal, I don't know racing rules. It sounds like you've got the theory down, so become a well oiled machine. And learn to read the wind. Being in the right wind can make all the difference. I've been left drifting at the head of a flotilla of floundering racers by one lone skipper who had the right wind while the rest of us just sat and gawked as she crossed the finish line on the outside line. Very frustrating. - Will (Dragonfly)

Oh I have heard about 400 wet sand paper on the bottom not wax at all. Also try to be at the start line at speed when the gun goes off.

Boat: Ensenada 20
, so:

The FJ can be a good boat for beginners, but it is usually best sailed with two on board. There are many models. The International FJ was offered in seat and non-seat models; the latter has you sitting on the gunnel. The tradeoff for this loss in comfort is that you learn to hike out and when you do , it comes up very dry (no bailing). More common now is the Vanguard manufactured Club FJ: very similar, not identical to the original FJ or International Flying Junior, non-seat model.

Please note that some International FJs with seats will require additional flotation to be installed if you want to be self-rescuing.

This is a fast and lively boat. Learning on an FJ is similar to learning on a laser. You will learn a lot because it is very responsive. But it is not particularly stable.

An Oday Day Sailer, an American/Holder14, a Rhodes 19, JY15, etc. might provide more stable platforms for the less athletic beginner.

and we were screwing around. But it's always an easy boat to get back up.

3 sailors is not the issue, depending on their size and weight. We routinely went out with 4 adolescents, or one 20-something and 2-3 teens. Also part of the fun.

I hope you do it and hope you enjoy.

in this configuration. A capsize returns a boat with 300 gallons of inside. Somewhat unstable, requiring a bit of bailing time.

This boat, a more recent CFJ, has large air-tanks molded into the gunnels and no seats per se. You don't bail this boat out after a capsize, unless you really want to keep your toes dry!

Both sail well. I owned the first one. I've sailed the second one. I loved it but wouldn't recommend the first one to a beginner.

Used Sailing dinghies for sale

Jeanneau rush, hallberg rassy 352 mk ii, trintella 1 a, reverso match, despuig cadaques k7, birdyfish version race, john kerr dipping lug, vector 6.50, beneteau first 14, why trust us , already 68 boats sold through us, what is a sailing dinghy, main features of a sailing dinghy.

Sailing dinghies are sailboats with what is called a light construction and they mostly have a decked bow . They have at least one mainsail which can be complemented by a headsail (the jib) and a spinnaker (which will only be used for certain points of sail). The anti-drift plane consists of an unweighted, removable or pivoting daggerboard. The centreboard, the immersed part of the boat, combined with the sail thrust, enables the dinghy to go upwind. Measuring between 2 metres and 5 metres (sometimes more) in length and without any equipment to make them habitable, dinghies can't cope with difficult weather conditions, nor are they able to sail too far from the coast, so sailing dinghies are usually designed for 'beach' sailing .

Like ballasted dinghies and full centerboarders, sailing dinghies obviously belong to the dinghy category; monohull sailboats fitted with a retractable daggerboard preventing them from drifting to windward.

What makes sailing dinghies so fun to steer is their lack of keel and ballast on the daggerboard. This makes sailing dinghies faster and more thrilling but on the other hand, they lose stability. To compensate for this, the crew has to move sideways with a counter heel to reduce list and keep the boat balanced.

Due to the lack of ballast to balance the boat, if you make any steering errors then you can expect to capsize regularly on a light dinghy. However, today's sailing dinghies are built in such a way that the crew can right the vessel easily. Sailing schools also include how to right a boat after capsizing as part of their basic training. Wearing a lifejacket makes things pretty safe even if you do capsize regularly.

Sailing dinghies: popular sailing boats for competitions

Whether they're for 1 or 2 people, several light dinghies have made their mark on dinghy history.

  • the Optimist: often used for children's sailing lessons or as a racing dinghy, it is the smallest existing sailboat with a length of 2 metres;
  • the Moth Europe: a light dinghy you can actually build yourself with a fixed length and sail area;
  • the Finn: an Olympic dinghy with the mast arched backwards;
  • the OK Yole: a light dinghy designed as a preparation boat for the Olympic Finn;
  • the Vaurien: designed in 1951, this dinghy can be used by sailing schools and beginners as it's so easy to handle;
  • the Mousse: dating from the 50's, it is easy to build a Mousse by yourself and it doesn't cost much;
  • the 505: pronounced five-o-fifty, this competition dinghy designed for two crewmembers has all the typical characteristics of a dinghy for the first time;
  • and the Caravelle: a school sailing boat which can hold a crew of 4 to 6 people.

Are you looking for a light and sporty boat? Browse through our used sailing dinghies listings on Band of Boats and find the sailboat that will make your heart skip a beat.
