North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper announced the purchase in the Hatteras New Bern, N.C. plant standing in front of the 40’ fiberglass NitWits, the first Hatteras ever built more than 60 years ago.

NEW BERN, N.C. — White River Marine Group, LLC, a leading manufacturer of recreational boats, will open a manufacturing facility in Craven County, with a target of 500 jobs, Gov. Roy Cooper announced Thursday.

The company will make a significant investment in New Bern, creating its first coastal manufacturing site and adding Hatteras to its portfolio of well-known brands.

“Boat and marine manufacturing requires specialized and experienced workers, and White River Marine knows our state can deliver the people they need to successfully expand their business in New Bern,” said Governor Cooper.

White River Marine Group

White River Marine Group (WRMG), an affiliate of Missouri-based Bass Pro Shops, is the world’s largest manufacturer of boats. Founded by noted angler and conservationist Johnny Morris, WRMG builds legendary performance boat brands like TRACKER, the No. 1 fishing boat in America for the past 45 years in terms of units sold, and ASCEND, the world’s best-selling kayaks. Other leading brands include MAKO, Ranger, Nitro, Triton, Tahoe, Sun Tracker and Regency pontoon boats.

The expansion will shift the focus of the company’s saltwater manufacturing from the Midwest to the sea, closer to the saltwater market and a thriving community of craftsmen and women. The company will continue to support and grow Hatteras, as well as relocate production of iconic saltwater boat brands MAKO and Ranger Saltwater to New Bern, which is a premier location for saltwater fishing.

Major Investment in Hatteras Manufacturing

Plans call for a major investment to modernize the Hatteras facility and establish a state-of-the-art coastal manufacturing center generating hundreds of new jobs. Consistent with Bass Pro’s reputation for turning shopping for outdoor gear into an experiential adventure, the plant will offer customers demo rides on the Atlantic Ocean and opportunities to tour the factory. It will also serve as an R&D center for sea-trialing and product development across all three brands.

Morris is a big fan of the area and has spent many days fishing in the Outer Banks for big tuna and marlin. The local sportfishing culture is a major inspiration for the company to relocate its saltwater manufacturing.

“The marine trades are an important part of North Carolina’s heritage,” said North Carolina Commerce Secretary Machelle Baker Sanders. “It’s great to see a company with the leadership and reputation of White River Marine choose our state for this important expansion of their company.”

The regional economy will benefit from a more than $22 million payroll impact each and every year.

White River Marine Group’s project in North Carolina will be facilitated by a Job Development Investment Grant (JDIG) approved by the state’s Economic Investment Committee earlier today. Over the course of the 12-year term of this grant, the project is estimated to grow the state’s economy by $1.17 billion. Using a formula that takes into account the new tax revenues generated by the new jobs, the JDIG agreement authorizes the potential reimbursement to the company of up to $5,441,400, spread over 12 years. State payments only occur following performance verification by the departments of Commerce and Revenue that the company has met its incremental job creation and investment targets. JDIG projects result in positive net tax revenue to the state treasury, even after taking into consideration the grant’s reimbursement payments to a given company.

White River Marine’s JDIG agreement could also move as much as $604,600 into a fund that helps rural communities across the state attract business in the future. When companies select a site located in a Tier 2 county such as Craven, their JDIG agreements move some of the new tax revenue into the state’s Industrial Development Fund – Utility Account. Local communities in more economically challenged areas of the state use grants from the Utility Account to build public infrastructure projects, which can improve a community’s ability to attract companies to their regions.

“It’s great to see the next chapter open for this important manufacturing site in our region,” said N.C. Representative Steve Tyson. “White River Marine Group is the number one company in their industry, and we welcome the new jobs and investment they’re bringing to New Bern and Craven County.”

“Great economic development announcements don’t happen by themselves,” said N.C. Senator Norman Sanderson. “I’m proud of the many community partners that worked tirelessly behind the scenes to help us reach this achievement. All of us will continue to support the company as they put down roots and grow here.”

Partnering with the North Carolina Department of Commerce and the Economic Development Partnership of N.C. on this project were the North Carolina General Assembly, the North Carolina Community College System, the North Carolina Department of Revenue, Craven County, the Craven 100 Alliance, North Carolina’s Southeast, and the Craven County Economic Development Department.

The Hatteras Acquisition

The White River Marine Group, part of the Bass Pro Shops family of brands, purchased Hatteras Yachts and facility in New Bern, North Carolina. The White River Marine Group is the world’s largest boating manufacturer. Its holdings include lines: Ranger, Mako, Tracker, and a number of others.

The White River Marine Group boasts a long history of boating innovation. Its origin lies in the 1978 when Johnny Morris introduced the Bass Tracker. The Tracker was bass fishing’s first every ready-to-fish boat, motor and trailer package.  The company’s platform and history of innovation are well suited to ushering in the next era of Hatteras.

With the acquisition of Hatteras, the company plans a large investment in the New Bern, North Carolina facility. In addition to continuing to produce Hatteras Yachts, White River Marine Group plans to relocate its Mako and Ranger Saltwater manufacturing to North Carolina. The vision includes expansion of the Hatteras yard, both increasing capacity and providing a saltwater base of operations for White River Marine.

The move brings clarity to the situation surrounding Hatteras Yachts. It also promises stability. Johnny Morris, the owner of Bass Pro Shops and the White River marine Group, described the acquisition with genuine passion and excitement.

“We are inspired by the many similarities between the pride and passion of the master boat builders from our home in the Ozarks and the legendary boat builders of North Carolina and the New Bern area in particular. Both share the same genuine commitment to American craftsmanship, with scores of family members working together and generations of highly experienced boat builders taking pride in what they do,” said Morris.

“We’re committed to support Hatteras in staying true to its roots as a legendary saltwater brand built by a passion for fishing while expanding our operations to better serve all those who love the sea,” explains Johnny Morris.

The acquisition, announced on Thursday May 20, 2021, was a well-guarded secret. The announcement showcased White River Marine Group’s excitement and incredible profile. In attendance were not only Johnny Morris and the executives from WRMG, but also North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper and Nascar legend Richard Childress and Daytona 500 winner Austin Dillon.

The Tracker car made an appearance (and did an awesome burn out) on the floor of the Hatteras plant.

The AMF years at Hatteras, as bad as at Harley-Davidson?

I know from my motorcycling past that H-D went downhill rapidly once American Machine and Foundry took over. They are now seen as a typical conglomerate plunderer of it's day: no money for R&D, lower build quality, bad relations with dealers etc. What were the AMF years like at Hatteras? When did they take over and how long did they last? It seems like the managers at Hatteras were able to resist the corporate bean counters better than at H-D.

I had heard the same thing about AMF ("the bean counter years" for Hatteras), particularly as it relates to the electrical wiring on Hatts; however, I'm not noticing anything OEM that unusually poor on mine, but then again electricity is not my forte, so what do I know! I did notice that the nice bronze portlights turned to plastic. The hulls aren't as thick as the older models. The decks are not a rock solid as the older boats and you can feel the difference when walking on them. The old boats feel like you're walking on a concrete slab when you walk around the bow area. Not so, by the time AMF got done with them.

I think this is the ownership chronology Started 1959 Sold to Rockwell International 1968 Sold to AMF 1972 Sold to Genmar (Irwin Jacobs and companies) 1985 Sold to Brunswick 2002 According to Pascoe, the Rockwell years were awful. The AMF years were good. I think we all have opinions about what has happened after that.

Looking for another boat...not a Hatt

If I remember correctly hatteras was not sold to Genmar. Genmar purchased AMF after they refused to sell hatteras and then sold off the rest of the company. I am not sure if Genmar followed the Hatteras style before imparting the carver styling or if it just took so long to do it that it seemed that way but they built classics for a few years in there.

I think I may have had my Rockwell years and AMF years mixed up! I think it was reading Pascoe where I learned about the bad years and the wiring problems. Still, at some point, the boats did start to cheapen up as compared to the really early models. That's where I notice bronze-to-plastic stuff. Even in stupid little things like the cabinet and drawer pulls. The ones on Ed's 1968 Hatt are far superior than the RV style crap I got on my 1980. And then there's the OEM sliding glass "patio" door on my 1980 Hatt in place of the nice wood, sliding or french doors. The aft deck of my boat looks like someone's balcony to their condo. Don't get me started on what a bonehead move by Hatteras that was!

I wonder when in 1985 Genmar took over. My April (I believe) 1985 boat has AMF emblems on her.

Our 1980 53MY has only Hatteras emblems on the boat; the binder with all the oem manuals has an AMF/Hatteras logo.

Many times owners tried to update the look of the boat with newer emblems. I still have the original blue and white plastic block plate that says Hatteras in the center with a space for the size on one end (53) and a space on the other end for AMF. That is the right one for my vintage. I remember our 1975 43DC having the black script Hatteras emblems like these: I'm not sure about when that changed. 1980 could have been either of those two. I see most people updating to this style:

That's the newer, Genmar version. It may have been replaced during repaint.

In 2021, the Hatteras brand was purchased by White River Marine Group, an affiliate of Bass Pro Shops. The New Bern, North Carolina based shipyard is responsible for producing models like the GT65 Carolina, GT54, and the M98 Panacera.

More About Hatteras Yachts

Hatteras Yachts set their voyage in 1959 on the shores of North Carolina. Hatteras has set standards for ruggedness and high performance in all waters since the start with their solid fiberglass hull bottom and the only yacht brand to warrant its hull for five years. Hatteras Yachts build, market and service luxury production sportfishing and motor yachts through a worldwide network of builders.

On March 22, 1960 in High Point, North Carolina, Hatteras produced its first sportfishing yacht, a 41-foot convertible yacht named Knit Wits. Hatteras Yachts became a legend. To this day, Knit Wits, is still in service. After the Yachting Industry demanding bigger boats, the Hatteras sportfishing fleet expanded to 50-foot boats and to today’s date they are up to 101-foot convertibles. Hatteras also began designing as well as producing a whole line of cruising yachts that range from 56 up to 105-feet in length.

In 1967, Hatteras added a second manufacturing facility in New Bern, North Carolina. The original facility was closed after 30 years and all manufacturing was stabilized at the 95-acre waterfront site in New Bern, where they still operate today. Hatteras Yachts then wanted to develop a series of convertibles; sportfishing yachts. Sportfishing yachts, compatible of fishing tournaments as well as carrying owners and guests in comfort while on an offshore excursion. Hatteras also created an array of semi-custom luxury motor yachts, a better focus on comfort and cruising rather than sportfishing.

The ownership of Hatteras Yachts has changed multiple times. The most recent time was in 2021 by White River Marine Group, an affiliate company of Bass Pro Shops. Other boat brands under White River include Tracker Boats, Mako, Triton, Tahoe, and Nitro.

100 Raised Pilothouse

Mr. Loui, 31-meters, the shipyards 100 raised pilothouse series, was the first hull in 2013 for Hatteras Yachts that was designed by the in-house team, who collaborated with T4Design by Enrico Gobbi. Mr. Loui can accommodate eight guests in four staterooms and has a maximum speed of 25 knots. All staterooms acquire entertainment centers, television screens as well as en-suite restrooms. As for maintaining crew members, the Hatteras 100 Raised Pilothouse can accommodate three crew members within two cabins. The salon on Mr. Loui has grand windows allowing a good quantity of natural light to shine through and comfortable seating. As for dining, a dinette in the galley is available for eight guests for a casual setting.  

M98 Panacera

The Hatteras M98 Panacera is the newest model to be announced by the builder. Designed for serious long-distance cruising, as well as formal entertaining, the M98 Panacera is as luxurious as it is comfortable. Hatteras continues to use signature skylights in their motor yacht models to add to the interior's ambiance and increase natural light. The beam of the M98 will be over 22-feet, giving owners a tremendous amount of interior volume throughout the accommodations.

80 Motor Yacht

Can’t decide between the high-class amenities of a 120-foot motor yacht or a manageable 70-footer by two people? The resolution is a Hatteras 80-foot motor yacht with a 21’3” beam. You will be amazed at the design and generous features that the Hatteras 80 Motor Yacht endures. Some of the grand characteristics that you will find are the cockpit underwater lights, a modern flybridge, wine cooler, an aft deck bar that includes a refrigerator and sink, and a sunken wet bar in the salon. All these grand amenities will take your celebrations to the next level. Hatteras 80 Motor Yacht overall offers the most outstanding entertainment space, custom furnishings and numerous options for its layout and navigation system.

This Hatteras model, GT70 is conceived to excel under vigorous conditions while still being able to offer a broad number of features and amenities that structure the premium sportfish category. Its speed goes over 40 knots with a cruising speed in the mid 30’s. As for the interior, the Hatteras GT 70 is very spacious and offers the ultimate sportfishing platform.

68 Convertible

Straightforward, modern but sleek, that is what the Hatteras 68 sportfishing convertible is. From the interior being upscale with high-gloss cherry joinery and sliding doors to the 192 square foot teak soled cockpit with a Pompanette fighting chair for the large game angler. The salon is a spacious area to unwind after a long day and the staterooms are more than luxurious. The bridge on the Hatteras 68 convertible is entirely enclosed with powerful windshields, this is meant to protect you from any element when steering the Hatteras 68 Convertible on any journey.

Hatteras 64 Motor Yacht

The Hatteras 64 Motor Yacht is built for endurance and the craftsmanship cannot be missed throughout all the detail even in the non-skid fiberglass deck. The Hatteras 64 Motor Yacht is Hatteras’ only yacht to feature such unique features such as V-drive and an easy riding modified fiberglass V-hull with an 18’4” beam which provides cruising at around 16 knots and tops out at 19 knots.

Why Buy a Hatteras Yacht

Hatteras Yachts have long been the gold-standard manufacturer known of high-quality sport and cruising yachts known worldwide for craftsmanship, functionality, performance, and style. As the company celebrates its 60th year, a review of its history and unique approach to boat building is timely.

How Hatteras Yachts Came to Be 

The waters near Cape Hatteras, where the cold Labrador Current meets the warm Gulf Stream, can rarely be described as calm. When Willis Slane and his design partner began envisioning a new style of fishing boat to cope with rough sea conditions, they set a new standard for how fishing yachts should be built.   

With the 1960 introduction of the uniquely named Knit Wits, a 41-foot sportfishing yacht, Slane began an evolution in recreational and sport fishing boats that changed the industry. The boat came with an open-air, upper helm station that could easily convert to a comfortable family outing craft.  

Also, the builder and designer employed a new material known as fiberglass that could withstand the pounding and the sea’s harsh elements far better than previous materials used.  

And, powered by two 275-hp Lincoln V 8  engines, the craft moved quickly and powerfully through heavy seas.  

The Knit Wits, later dubbed the Hatteras 41 Convertible, quickly became the standard in the industry, and sales ballooned.  Hatteras Yachts was to lead the way in fiberglass watercraft for decades.  

Innovation, Performance, Safety, Comfort, and Style  

Not resting on their early successes, Hatteras Yacht s grew through innovation, study, and an in-depth understanding of the sport yachting world.    

Still, with the focus on maneuverability and comfortable ride even in rough seas, Hatteras yachts delivered a far smoother ride than the competitors  who  seemed to design their products only for speed in calm waters. When the going got tough, knowledgeable sport fishing and recreational boating connoisseurs chose to stay dry and comfortable in their Hatteras yachts.  

Unlike other manufacturers, Hatteras Yachts avoided using balsa wood cores in their hulls that tended to lighten the boat's weight to enhance the speed. But this inclusion also decreased the strength.  

The hulls and sides of Hatteras watercraft are made with resin-infused solid fiberglass with no “fillings” to lessen the overall weight.  Hatteras hulls feature a downward angle chine with hull side “step-outs” to help reduce spray while increasing the beam above the waterline for more cabin space.  Hatteras Yachts will withstand more significant impact with less damage than others experience. Effectively absorbing a collision with a hidden log or other objects at sea can be a life-saving feature.  

After six decades, Hatteras Yachts is still an iconic, highly respected builder of sportfishing and motor yachts.

Features include a full wet bar and counter storage area to starboard with very generous custom cabinetry, which was an original construction at Hatteras. There are granite countertops with bar sink along the starboard side, a Kitchen‐Aid ice maker, lockers below, and beveled glass locker doors above the counter. Forward of the dining area is a full beam salon with new teak and holly flooring throughout, with the aft stateroom stairwell aft to starboard, including a custom main deck day head (installed 2016).

Accommodations

Owner and two guest staterooms are aft of the full-beam amidships engine room and are accessed by a private stairwell. The inviting Master Suite has a centerline king berth with updated soft goods (2021), storage below, nightstands and dressers outboard, seats, lockers, and drawer storage. There is a walk‐in cedar-lined wardrobe closet and access to the all-new head area. The master bath was renovated with new granite counters, marble floors, a tile shower stall, a custom glass enclosure, and all-new modern fixtures. It also features a 36” TV. 

Moving forward through the privacy door is a hallway with the stairwell to starboard and two large linen closets along the side. The two identical guest staterooms each have single berths inboard and outboard with a nightstand between, locker outboard, drawer storage, mirror with “hidden” 26” TVs, and door to heads. Both guest stateroom heads were also remodeled with new granite counters, marble floors, tile shower stall, custom glass enclosure, and all-new modern fixtures.

As you walk up the flybridge stairs you will notice a lot of money has been spent updating this yacht with a custom hardtop that looks factory but gives air condition shade with a top-quality enclosure that buttons up to the hard top.
