Catamaran design.
The Sea Eagle FastCat14 has a catamaran-style hull design with widely spaced side tubes that create lift to reduce center floor friction on the water.
The catamaran design:
The Sea Eagle FastCat is made from a double-layer of PVC-reinforced 1000 Denier fabric that is drop-stitched together by joining the top and bottom of the floor and sides of the gunwales with tens of thousands of high-tensile strength threads.
The drop-stitch construction allows the boat to be inflated up to 15psi. This high-pressure improves performance and provides remarkable stability, buoyancy, and a rigid floor stable enough to stand and walk around on.
The reinforced double-layer protection allows the FastCat to bounce off rocks, logs, and other objects leaving the extremely durable boat unscathed.
With four separate air chambers, the FastCat14 adheres to the highest safety standards (NMMA and CE certified).
In the unlikely event of a chamber failure, the boat will easily stay afloat to ensure your safety and that of any passenger.
This rugged inflatable boat has full-length, underside rubbing strakes and side bumper guards for added protection from bumps and abrasions where the boat is most vulnerable.
The Sea Eagle FastCat14 has ten heavy-duty grab handles conveniently located to make carrying and portage a breeze.
There are 3 heavy-duty grab handles on the port, 3 on the starboard, 2 in the bow, and 2 in the stern.
The FastCat14 has two Universal Scotty Pads in the stern for optional Scotty accessories and two EZ-Attach Bench Seats each with four pre-drilled holes on each end to accept optional Scotty Universal Deck Mounts for four more Scotty accessory mounting locations.
Easily add rod holders, triple rod holders, cup holders, an anchor lock, bait boards, a camera mount, a transducer mount, and more!
Securely attaching the Quik-Cinch EZ-Attach Tandem Bench Seats is fast and easy as 1-2-3!
The custom removable transom improves the storability and portability of the FastCat14 by making it lighter and allowing a smaller folded profile.
Install the transom and attach an electric motor up to a 20 hp outboard and you are ready to glide across the water.
The transom provides the ability to attach an electric motor or up to a 20 hp outboard gas motor for speeds up to 23 mph.
The Sea Eagle FastCat14 is equipped with a canopy attachment system for attaching the optional Wide Sun & Rain Canopy . Protecting yourself and your passenger from the sun and rain has never been easier.
While the high-pressure structural strength of the FastCat14 provides a sturdy floor on which to stand, the non-slip EVA foam deck covering provides secure footing and improved durability.
The high-pressure structural strength of the FastCat14 improves balance, stability, handling, performance, buoyancy, and rigidity for standing and carrying gear and supplies.
The FastCat14 has an incredibly portable hull that will pack into almost any SUV, trunk bed, or RV for easy transport to and from the water.
Or leave it inflated and strap it to the top of your SUV, RV, truck rack, or a lightweight 18-foot bunk trailer with 12-inch high adjustable bunk risers.
You can set up your FastCat14 at the water’s edge or easily get it from your vehicle to water and back with an EZ-Cart or by use of its ten heavy-duty grab handles.
A seemingly endless list of optional accessories can transform the FastCat14 into the tailor-made boat of your dreams.
Whether you are out to do some fishing, snorkeling, scuba diving, sunning, swimming, picnicking, or an extended camping trip, Sea Eagle Boats has designed the FastCat14 to be easily customizable to meet your every need.

Hey Steve Hood, was wondering about the non-slip EVA foam deck on the FastCat14. How does it hold up in the sun? Worried about it getting too hot or degrading over time with exposure.
The catamaran design is a game changer for stability! Been on monohulls most of my life, but this makes me want to switch.
Seriously impressed with the 110w Solar Boat Package. Clean energy powering my trips sounds ideal. Anyone got hands-on experience with it?
Not sure about attaching a 20 HP gas motor to these inflatable beauties. Seems counterintuitive to the eco-friendly vibe. Thoughts?
I get your point, but having the option doesn’t mean you always use it. Plus, for longer trips, that motor could be a lifesaver.
Can you fish off it or will a big catch flip you? Trying to imagine wrestling a river monster on that thing.
Love the Quik-Cinch EZ-Attach Bench Seating System idea. Customizable solutions are exactly what I’ve been looking for. Kudos for the innovation!
Portable, transportable – aren’t those just fancy words for ‘it floats’? But hey, if it gets me to those secluded fishing spots, count me in.
Interesting article, Steve. However, I believe the concept of catamarans dates back much further. The ancient Polynesians were the true pioneers of this design, using it for vast oceanic explorations.
How fast can this baby go with a 20 HP motor? I’m all about that need for speed on water.
Finally, a boat that speaks to my chill vibes. Can’t wait to just float and forget the world.
Removable floor
It's hard to ignore the portability and comfort aspect of our fully removable inflatable floor system. Extremely rigid when inflated (10 psi), "standing on board is no problem", and both easy and quick to deflate and store for transport or storage. This is a big advantage over inflatable boats, which have a built-in floor or RIB, which can both hold water.
PVC or TPU (welded seams without plasticisers)
As standard, the boats are made of quality 5-Layer PVC (0,9mm - 1000 denier - 1100g/m²) fabric from SIJIATEX, which has a very strong UV protection. Optional boats are also available in TPU (1,2mm - welded seams without plasticisers). The 10PSI high pressure floor, including the additional 1mm thick PVC protective coating, is made exclusively of PVC with DropStitch technology. TPU is more abrasion-resistant than PVC and Hypalon/CSM, rafting boats or boats for extreme operating conditions (-70°C to +80°C) are made from TPU, for example. In contrast to PVC, TPU hoses do not contain any plasticisers, i.e. the welded seams remain supple even after welding and can withstand higher pressures than glued Hypalon/CSM seams.
Takacat - Takayak-395
Catamarans are much more tilt-resistant than monohulls, and this also applies to kayaks. Since TAKACAT exclusively develops boats in catamaran design, it was logical that the new kayak from TAKACAT will also be a catamaran => Takayak-395
Generous continuous load area
The number 395 describes the overall length of the Takayak. But much more interesting is the usable length of the inner high-pressure floor of 370cm, with a continuous width of 42cm. So the Takayak offers plenty of loading space for 2 people with luggage, parents with children or for one/two people with one or more dogs.
29cm drive hoses with protective strips on the undersides
The two driving hoses with their 29cm diameter are well proportioned for a maximum load of 260Kg and are powerfully supported by the large-surface high-pressure floor. The lower connecting floor between the two drive hoses additionally protects the inner high-pressure floor in case of ground contact and during landing.
10PSI "Drop-Stitch" high pressure floor
The 8cm thick high-pressure floor can be inflated with an operating pressure of up to 10PSI = 689mbar thanks to its drop-stitch technology. This creates a stable loading platform and shields the entire seating and loading area from the water surface.
3 air chambers + safety overpressure valves
Each driving hose is equipped with a Halkey-Roberts valve at the stern and an overpressure safety valve at the bow. Accidental over-pumping of the tubes is therefore impossible and harmful pressure increases due to strong sunlight are also avoided. The Takayak-395 has a total of 3 independent large-volume air chambers.
One-seam design + 5-layer PVC fabric skin
One-seam design means that each tube is made from a single piece of skin. The tubes have only one longitudinal seam on the outside, which is additionally covered with a resistant 1mm thick protective strip and thus doubly secured. At the bow and stern, the so-called bumpers (end pieces) are then glued in, also double-secured. The One-Seam design reduces the number of seams and seam intersections by over 50% compared to half-shell production and thus significantly reduces the possibility of possible leaks in the seam areas. The 5-ply fabric-reinforced PVC skin with 0.9mm thickness and 1000 dtex meets the standard of quality inflatable boats. Optionally, the Takayak-395 can also be manufactured in 1mm Hypalon/CSM.
Open bow and stern
The open bow and stern create a forced bilge. Water that penetrates the Takayak-395, e.g. due to an overflowing wave or heavy rain, immediately escapes again; no bilge valve can realise such a bilge capability. Another advantage is that it is easy to return out of the water. No time-consuming safety and re-entry training is necessary.
Mobile in a bag
The Takayak-395, together with the high pressure floor, the two paddles, the two kayak seats and the hand air pump can be stowed in a transport bag. The transport bag measures 120 x 40 x 40cm (length/width/height). The driving hoses and the high-pressure floor together weigh 20Kg, the completely parked carrying bag with all accessories weighs approx. 24Kg, depending on the model of the hand pump.
Assembly - quick and uncomplicated
Setting up the Takayak-395 is quick and uncomplicated:
And the Takayak-395 is ready to go out. Depending on the number of people and the load, one or two seats can be clipped in.
Electric Engine connected with a FinBox adapter
Thanks to the straight-through connecting floor between the two tubes, the Takayak-395/300 offers the possibility of e.g. gluing a slide-in fin box from down against the connecting floor and thus using an electric motor as a supporting drive aid. There are many manufacturers on the market who offer slide-in electric motors with FinBox adapters, e.g. Vaquita from ePropulsion, the Scupajet from Austria or the new E-Finn from JAYKAY in Germany. The course is then steered with the help of the paddle. Depending on the drive, speeds of up to 10Km/h can be achieved.
Kayaking redesigned - Takayak-395 - the redesigned kayak from Takacat offers advantages for all those who do not want to do without comfort and unique functionality when kayaking. As a catamaran, a stable position in the water, a ride as if on two rails, boarding and disembarking via the open bow is effortless, even out of the water back into the kayak, plenty of space for dogs and luggage travelling with you and a unique forced bilge.
Takacat LXHD-Series - Heavy Duty Rescue Boats
The Takacat models 340LX-HD, 380LX-HD, 420LX-HD and 460LX-HD are available as heavy-duty versions for water rescue and other operations under difficult conditions. An ideal rapid intervention boat (SEB) for the fire brigade, water rescue and police. Due to their low immersion depth, TAKACAT catamaran inflatable boats are ideal for shallow water operations. The open bow makes it much easier to transfer people into the boat. The same applies to rescue divers and lifeguards. The open transom guarantees that the Takacats never fill up. Any water that is taken over flows straight back out of the boat.
In the heavy-duty version, the Takacats are made of 1.2mm/1450 weight RESC (red/dark blue) thick PVC fabric, alternatively 1.5mm/1750 weight MIL (black) thick PVC fabric or alternatively 1mm Hypalon/CSM. The top of the both tubes is double reinforced with a wide strip of PVC skin to protect against heavy uniforms.
The heavy-duty high-pressure floor has a full-surface and all-round PVC protective coating with an additional layer on the top (2mm) so that the boat can be walked on with heavy footwear without any problems and carrying heavy equipment is no problem.
The heavy-duty transom, made of 2mm stainless steel square tube plus 50mm thick PE1000 transom plates with additional stainless steel reinforcement, can be fitted with a maximum of a 15 or 20hp outboard motor, depending on the model. Thanks to the open bow, a transfer from the water into the boat can be carried out much more easily than with inflatable boats with a bow bulge. Divers can also return to the boat more easily. The open transom allows water that inevitably flows into the boat during a rescue operation to run off again immediately, and the same applies to wave action and heavy rain.
Due to the catamaran construction, the Takacat can also be used for ice rescue in winter, the same applies to the heavy-duty high-pressure floor. Optionally, a GRP floor can be used instead of the high-pressure floor.
The Takacat catamaran inflatable boats of the "Heavy-Duty" LX series are custom-made, i.e. special customer requests can be included in the production.
Takacat - LXRIB - RIB Catamaran with Aluminium Floor
Takacat-LXRIB - The special advantages of inflatable boats, rigid hull boats and catamarans are combined in the LXRIB from Takacat to create an interesting solution. A combination of hydrodynamic and aredynamic influences allow the Takacat LXRIB to float over the water instead of cutting through it, resulting in decent planing characteristics when using compact outboards and good fuel efficiency ..... With its large centre floor and integrated bow platform (460LXR) with anchor locker, the Takacat LXRIB offers more space than other inflatable boats in this size range.
Due to its catamaran-specific stability and gliding behaviour, the Takacat LXRIB is a very good boat for multiple uses such as diving, fishing, camping, water skiing and tubing. The robust Takacat LXRIB is also a very good choice as a safety and support boat for all types of water sports and for boat hire.
TPU (1.2mm - welded seams) is the standard material for the LXR tubes. In the marine environment, boats are constantly exposed to scratches and scrapes on rough surfaces such as sharp rocks. When designing RIB tubes, it is of utmost importance that they can withstand the extreme conditions. Here too, TPU offers advantages over CSM/Hypalon for inflatable boats. TPU is much more abrasion resistant than CSM/Hypalon. This is one of the main reasons why the US space agency NASA uses TPU instead of CSM coatings for most of its textile applications.
RIBs, and especially Extreme RIBs used as military and commercial sea rescue boats, are often used in harsh weather conditions. These include both scorching and sub-zero temperatures. It is vital that the coating of the hoses can withstand these extreme conditions. High temperatures are detrimental to some textile coatings as they increase oxidation of the coating and the underlying fabric. Low temperatures, on the other hand, can cause many materials to lose their flexibility and tear or fail. Both temperature extremes generally affect CSM coatings more than TPU coatings. TPU generally retains its performance properties at temperatures from -50°C to +70°C, meaning that Takacat-LXR can be used from the Arctic to the Caribbean.

Takacat 340 LXRIB
(New aerodynamic tube design from 2024)
Takacat 460 LXRIB
The Takacat LXRIB is a boat that offers a safe feeling for beginners thanks to its catamaran characteristics and, depending on the motorisation, also inspires advanced drivers in terms of performance ..... Videos
The new LXRIB from Takacat combines the aerodynamic design of the LX series with a robust connecting floor made of marine aluminium. The 340LXR will make its world debut at BOOT 2024 in Düsseldorf . The 340LXR and the 460LXR are currently available. Depending on the model, the LXRIB can be motorised with 50 hp. The LXRIB series has been consistently developed with recyclability in mind, i.e. the RIB floor is made of marine aluminium and the welded tubes are made of TPU. TPU can be welded like PVC but has no plasticisers that can evaporate, i.e. it remains elastic even after the seams have been welded. In addition, the softening temperature of TPU is considerably higher than that of PVC, which is a plus for hot regions and when the boat is transported on the davits. Unlike PVC, TPU can be recycled and is compostable. The LXRIB is optionally available with a bow stowage box. The 340LXR weighs 65kg and the 460LXR weighs 105kg. For a RIB, these values can be described as lightweight.
As an option, the LXRIB models can also be equipped with bench consoles, jockey seats and combination consoles, see examples above. Aluminium equipment carriers and electric jack plates are available as further options.

Warning: this catamaran is addictive to sail.
The most professional of all HAPPY CATs, is now even more powerful! This version with a high-tech mast made of 100% carbon, weighs 6 kg less and offers attractive advantages: Sensationally light, only 21 kg per bag. Even more stable sailing on one hull through later tipping point. Very easy lifting after capsizing. Even better mainsail profile due to lower bending curve.
The HURRICANE is now available with a professional carbon mast. A absolute recommendation for sailors who set high priority to best sailing performance as well as sailors who often sail on big inland waters and at sea.
The mast section is drop shaped and equipped with a track for the main sail bolt rope. Made of 100% carbon fiber for highest stability at lowest weight.
The carbon model comes with an additional padded bag for the four mast parts. The whole catamaran is packed in 4 bags.
Two long bags (185 x 30 x 30 cm), one packsack (80 x 45 x 28 cm) and the pack-bag mast (170 x 38 x 17 cm).
Fast, safe, dry.
Cut through the waves at maximum speed or experience more buoyancy:
This is ensured by the convex hull bottom, the hulls with a diameter of 54 cm in combination with the Wavepiercer bow and the long waterline of 499 cm! This is the ideal hull shape as it not only allows you to be extremely fast but also protects you from water splashes so that you can enjoy a stable ride with low water resistance. It is stable and has improved bow and stern buoyancy for extra loads and even more safety. And yet it is fierce like a hurricane!
This inflatable Grabner travel catamaran has been developed and optimised through tank testing and the boat-skin is hand made from strong Grabner car tyre rubber.
Two strong braces reinforce the hulls in the bow area. This gives constant rigidity just like a hard shell hull and creates even more speed and less spray.
The hull and frame are firmly and stably connected by sleeve inserts, while the special square profile frame with angular connectors provides high torsional stability and doesn’t twist. The trampoline mesh is integratedseamlessly and directly into the profile frame and offers plenty of space for comfortable sitting.
A powerful 6 hp-engine can be mounted to the saltwater-resistant anodised aluminium frame to accelerate the inflatable catamaran to a breath taking speed of 25 km/h.
The crossbar, which is included as standard, stabilises the hulls in the bow area.
The optional foredeck increases the usable area, protects from spray when sailing at a high speed and can also be used to fasten luggage – or to lie and sunbathe on it in relaxing holiday moments or when you feel like lazing in the sun! Thanks to the fixed crossbar, you can comfortably get into the boat via the foredeck.
Camera, drinking bottle, tent: With the optional reardeck, you can use the stern to store light luggage. This additional space is great for expeditions or for spontaneous access…
No wind? With the optional motor-bracket, you can mount a small auxiliary electric motor onto the rear bar to keep you going when there is no wind, which will not get in the way when sailing.
The hydrodynamically optimised centreboard extends deep into the water to counteract the lateral drift in the best possible way. The inclination is infinitely adjustable so that the centre of pressure by can be optimally trimmed for speed on any course.
The robust aluminium centreboard releases automatically when it touches the ground and it can be pulled in completely during landing.
The “kick-up” rudder is extremely robust thanks to the cast metal rudder head (black). The sleek, hydrodynamically optimised blade extends deep into the water to improve steering control.
Instead of using cable pulls, you can comfortably and directly haul the blade up or down from the tiller, which has two lock-in positions: folded up or lowered down into the water completely. It releases automatically when it touches the ground.
The high-speed rudder, which is shifted to the rear due to the outrigger, provides the best steering control and makes it easy to steer smoothly and steadily.
Better profil.
The mast foot ball joint is new and innovative. Even when there is only little wind, the mast rotates easily with the sail and thus improves the overall profile. With the rotational limiter, the mast rotation can be restricted for light to strong wind conditions and the mainsail can be sailed flat or more bulging. For the best trim in any wind condition.
The practical mast foot joint also makes it easy to right the mast, which can be righted and lowered by just one person.
More tension.
With the jib halyard pulley, you can easily adjust the tension of the rig manually.
The best trim for the speediest sailing.

Catamarans are easily spotted by being water vessels consisting of 2 parallel hulls (of equal size), connected together by a frame. With a priority on smooth sailing and stability, Inflatable Catamarans are your holiday go to option as they can be driven by engines, sails or a pair of oars.
Oars are used for rowing, and they’re connected to the water vessel via oarlocks or designated pivot points. The difference between a pair of oars and paddles is that paddles are held by the paddlers when propelling the vessel, while oars are connected to watercraft via oarlocks.
With so much to see and do during the holidays and at your leisure, you sure wouldn’t want to miss out on your scheduled adventurous activities. Inflatable catamarans give you the option to go where bigger catamarans/boats would prefer not to, due to sizing and sometimes distance. Take a dive into our top 10 picks for the best kayaking GPSs on the market.
Inflatable catamaran dinghies are geometry stabilized water vessels that derive their stability from their wide beams. They’re unique in size, as their typical size range is between 8 – 14 feet (∼ 244 – 427 cm). The inflatable catamaran could get slightly larger depending on the specific purpose for which it was created.
They are used for a host of different purposes, of which some include: relaxation & picnicking, sporting, diving/snorkeling, fishing, marine research, and search and rescue. Before we proceed any further, even though inflatable catamarans have excellent maneuverability and are relatively stable, always ensure you’ve got a life vest, or if you’re with the crew, life vests .
Also of important note is, if you’re inexperienced, you shouldn’t try doing this on your own. It’s advisable you have an experienced individual with you before heading out, it’s better safe than sorry.
In addition to inflatable catamarans being very portable and lightweight, they provide a lot of comfort alongside fun. Some important accessories to have handy with your inflatable dinghies or catamarans include anchors, foot pumps, storage covers, oars (or paddles), cart with wheels (for ease of transport from and to the target water location).

Row vista - beyond amazing.
Alex, I gotta tell you this. Yesterday I was at Lake Natoma, the home to the Sacramento Aquatic Center, with my Kayak and RowVista kit. What I did not know was that there was a whole bunch of rowing teams practicing. (I later googled and found that they have the PAC 12 happening today, which is a University level competition). The look of amazement and bewilderment that I got from the boys and girls on sculls was amazing. It felt that this was the first time they saw someone row forward which btw is the only way I know, as the first time I rowed was 2 weeks ago. I got smiles, cheers and sometimes envy (side eyes) from over a 100 young people. I thought of going again today but I think I couldn't handle any more attention. The RowVista definitely made me the coolest rower, although not the fastest among these professional athletes. While, I have improved to 4.6 mph (7.4 km/h) over 2 km since I got the kit. Thanks for letting me live this moment, eagerly waiting for the XCAT.
We bought a Carbon 420 in Nov 2020, and have sailed it almost every week since then, sometimes twice a week! Alex is great to work with, answers every question, and is extremely knowledgeable. He truly loves the sport! One of the first things we did was intentionally capsize it to see how hard it was to right... Almost too easy! It's super easy for 1 person to right. And the carbon mast is super light and easy to step. So glad we got the carbon version! We find that it is highly stable, but very nimble. And it can really fly! We love that combination. It's fun and easy! Some accessories we highly recommend: Flextail pump. Cuts inflation time tremendously. And deflates fast to make storage really easy. Upgraded shackles. Huge difference in knowing they are secure, easy to check, and so easy to turn. Worth it! Front trampoline. Rope ladder. Outboard attachment. Trolley wheels. Because we added weight with an electric motor, we made a telescoping extension that hooks over the trolley axle. Now we launch and retrieve easily even at a ramp. The boat just floats on and off the trolley. Super easy and fast! Overall, we highly recommend the Carbon 420. It's perfect for us. We spend wonderful days on the water, sailing, exploring, snorkeling, and just loving the sound of water against the boat. And we definitely recommend Red Beard Sailing... Alex has the best service and the best prices!
Having sailed most of my life I was looking for a cat that did not require a trailer, but was large enough for a family of 6 to go day sailing and over-nighting while providing a level of excitement to keep the kids interested (speed). Other options didn't offer the loading capacity, size, portability, and performance found on the Happy Cat. I purchased our Happy Cat in 2020 and have sailed it with my family at numerous locations around Chesapeake Bay, Maryland, and Lake Ontario. Its portability makes it possible to fit in our RV (I've even had the Happy Cat in our Chrysler minivan along with the whole family-tight, but possible). With two adults on board, flying a hull is easy, non-eventful, and adds exhilaration to a day of sailing. Loaded with my family of 6+gear, the Evolution easily skims across the water at speeds that keep my young kids wanting more! While not the least expensive option, the construction, quality hardware/rigging, ease of sailing, performance, and portability made this a perfect choice for us. Alex assisted in reaching a decision on a boat which was best suited for my needs in a NO pressure manner. After sale support from Alex has been AWESOME! Alex continues to answer questions, provide input, and promptly responds to email, texts, as well as phone calls. Thanks Alex for helping me select the right boat to introduce my four young children to the amazing world of sailing..Oh, by the way, I feel like a kid again when sailing the Happy Cat!!
So happy with this purchase four seasons in. It’s a serious boat with all the lines and controls exactly where you want them. The light weight makes it easy to go in the lightest wind, and the rugged engineering feels solid even when it’s up on one pontoon in 20 knots. One person can easily get it righted if you manage to flip it (which doesn’t happen often). Alex has provided great service the whole way. I haven’t needed much, but he is responsive and knowledgeable. I have patched a pontoon, gotten some rigging replicated at West Marine, and attached a trolling motor to tool around when there’s no wind. All of that has been easy enough, and I see years of great sailing ahead of me in my Minicat 420. Can’t say enough positive things about the boat and Red Beard.
We purchased our RowVista X-Cat in 2016 and could not be happier with it. Superior engineering and construction. Red beard Sailing and Alex specifically are the best in the business to work with. Five stars in every category.
Got our 420 (LD Edition) from Alex at Redbeard this past summer (2017) and love the boat. I have owned and raced A-Class catamarans and while this is understandably no A-Cat, it is an awesome little boat that is a blast to sail! We live aboard our cruising catamaran, JADE, and wanted a portable sailing dinghy to mess around with while anchored in various places. Alex has been a great source, from the original set up and demo of the boat, through the purchase, delivery, inventory and follow up. The boat is very simple to set up (and actually fun to construct) and is lightweight enough to sling over the side with our big boat's spinnaker halyard, so we can set everything up on the trampoline of JADE and then launch and go. The roller furling jib is a great feature that really makes getting underway and docking very easy. My wife and I can sail it together, comfortably, as there is plenty of room on the tramp and hulls. I sailed the other day, solo, pacing a friend on his roto-molded beach cat and kept up in winds that were just shy of 15kts. It comes apart very easily and stows in two heavy vinyl zippered bags which we stow internally in JADE. Because this is a boat that sails really well AND is collapsable and easy to assemble and disassemble, it was the right choice for us. Can't wait to get out and sail it some more!
I had a small Mercury inflatable for about 10 years, and when I went looking for a replacement, I needed something a little larger and--I hoped--a boat I could row. We usually row out to our moorings on the midcoast of Maine and rarely use an outboard either on the dinghy or the sailboats. The design of the Takacat 260 Sport offered less wetted surface to push through the water and more space for people and gear. The high-pressure inflatable floor was an added bonus: soft and sure under foot and quick to dry, not to mention the convenience of having any rainwater settle below the floor and drain readily from the stern when the bow is lifted. This is our second season, and the "Left Behind" is working out beautifully. We frequently carry an oarsman, two passengers and an 80-pound Golden Retriever, although the boat certainly handles better with a lighter load. Alex handled the delivery from New Zealand to Maryland to Maine without a hitch.
This thing is a little rocket. This is my Third year with the X-cat. I still love it. I also have a 30 foot keelboat, but I take the X-cat out a lot. The X-cat is stable & well designed. I just took it out in worsening weather (against my better judgement). Very choppy conditions and accelerating winds with some light rains. I was sure I would pitch-pole but did it just would not happen. I also stayed pretty dry which was a big surprise. The motor is also wonderful for leaving against the tide. We’re still happy with it.
For a long time I have dreamed to own a sailboat, but don't have the space to have a towable one. Storage and transport were major concerns since I live an hour and a half from the nearest sailable lake. I learned about Minicat and was completely amazed about its features. Alex did a good job taking me and my family for a demo sail and the deal was closed the same day. Now we own a 420 emotion and it is our dream turned into reality. For novices like us, it took just a couple of hours on the water to learn by ourselves how to take the boat to where we want to go, it is very stable, fun and easy to sail. The service at Red Beard Sailing is not limited to the sale, we know we can count on them for whatever we need, five stars for sure!

Here in Baltimore, Maryland, we prefer to launch from the Gunpowder State Park, Hammerman Area . This park has great facilities, including a snack stand and proper bathrooms. The basin is pretty well protected, but large enough for ample wind on most days. In all but a NE wind, the water is flat and calm with little powerboat traffic, which is perfect for fast sailing and smooth paddling. If you are not near us, we recommend looking for State Parks that offer Small Boat Launches. We also have found some great resources through the sea kayaking communities, they typically well document launches and paddling areas similarly to how we discribed the Hammerman launch above.
Many of our boats are in stock, but others must be ordered from their respective factory. Portable boats have inexpensive and easy to replace parts, so if you are in a situation where you need to purchase a replacement part (or are looking to keep a few spares on hand), give us a call ( 410-705-5026 ) or drop us an email ( [email protected] )!
Depending on what boat you are purchasing and where you live, registration may or may not be required. In Maryland, we are only required to register our boats if they are intended for use with a motor.
The best way to see one of these boats is to visit our warehouse in Baltimore, MD or schedule a demo day on the water for the boat you are interested in. We host demo days where we have many of our boats on the beach ready to try out as well. There is a lively owner's group for all of our brands, we encourage you to join the community either on social media or other sailing forum to meet with other owners that are local to you! Give us a call ( 410-705-5026 ) or drop us a note ( [email protected] ) and we would be happy to point you in the right direction!
Red Beard Sailing is fully staffed with experienced sailors including yacht delivery captains and certified sailing instructors, but we do not offer sailing lessons. We have many local partners that would love to provide these lessons, with many of these options willing to do so on your personal boat!
We take pride in our brands and our work. We will work to make sure you are 100% satisfied with your purchase or we will work with you to return your boat. Unfortunately, the process of simply taking an order does cost us money that we, as merchants, cannot recover. We assess a 15% restocking fee for all cancelled or returned orders to cover our costs.

High Performance Inflatable Catamarans
Thundercat Racing. Thundercat racing is why you’re here. The evolution of design from highly competitive thundercat racing in South Africa has produced wonderful technology for all of us to enjoy.
We import genuine South African hulls by Aquarius, Caesar, Infanta, Thundercat, Gemini and Mako. Check our new and used thundercat inventory !
Stick with South African thundercat hulls for quality and performance that will guarantee years of reliable fun. “A used South African hull is usually better than a new hull from somewhere else.” – Mr. Cracker
Thundercats are catamaran RIBs (Rigid Inflatable Boat), a high performance relative to the Zodiak. They go by many names throughout the world (pencil duck, rubber duck, zapcat etc) but Thundercat is the most popular in the US. The inflatable sponsons have an aggressive profile in contrast to traditional recreational catamarans that allow them to turn like they are on rails. The hulls weigh around 200 pounds which helps them rocket from waves.
The second most exhilarating event of your life
Often raced in the surf, thundercats are great for rough water conditions because of their large flotation sponsons and open transoms. Any water that makes it into the vessel, quickly runs out the back through the transom. Although it can look dangerous, thundercats are actually safer than most vessels on the water. Typically, a thundercat will have six independently inflated chambers. If one is punctured, the remaining five will easily keep the vessel afloat.
Come race Thundercats in Florida at events like the BayLoosa Challenge!
Thundercats are usually raced 2-up (driver and copilot). Top speed and acceleration will be better with only a driver but the ballast of a copilot is helpful for making hairpin turns. Since the hull weights about 200 pounds and the motor weighs about 200 pounds, the movement of a 100 – 200 pound copilot about the cockpit can drastically change the location of the center of gravity and thus the ability to maneuver.
Thundercats are typically outfitted with 40 to 90 HP outboard motors. The lighter the motor however, the better the handling. The best motor for a thundercat inflatable is a 40 or 50, Yamaha or Tohatsu, short shaft, pull start, manual tilt carbureted 2 stroke. If you want max power, the best practical setup is a 40 HP outboard Mercury 3 cylinders of 1997-2005 vintage, ported to produce upwards of 90 HP. 4 strokes and fuel injected 2 strokes are sensitive to submersion and that’s why the carbureted 2 strokes of yesteryear are still the best fit for thundercat racing. Carbureted 2 strokes are great motors for thundercat power due to the inherent lack of electronics, high power to weight ratios and no need for a starting battery.

Thundercats are great for fishing and general recreation in addition to their wicked high speed performance. The majority of the hull lift comes from aerodynamics which leaves very little of the hull below the water’s surface. Shallow draft makes them great for getting up the creek or to your favorite scalloping spot. Egress and entry is a breeze over the round sponsons which make them particularly nice for free diving. It’s an all-condition life raft capable of speeds in excess of 70 MPH.
Boat, motor, trailer… what else?
The hulls are full of air but slamming your face against one after coming off of a wave is never fun. A full face (motocross type) helmet that is capable of getting completely wet without degradation of the internal padding protects your face from accidental smashing. Cut proof life jackets are mandatory in racing circuits.
Kill switches save lives.
The hulls come standard with storage compartments that are excellent for storing tools and a rope. Riders will need both when getting an overturned thundercat back in service.
A new thundercat hull will typically cost 4 to 6 thousand dollars depending on brand. Be weary of old hulls selling for dirt cheap because gluing seams again and again makes for a bad time. Modern, welded thundercat hulls take more abuse in their lifetime than predecessors or cheap knock offs.
Suitable motors go for $500 to $7000 (very used to new) and props cost between $100 to $1000.
Mercury 3 cylinders are great for thundercats since they are common and inexpensive. Merc 3 Cylinder Wiki
Gas tanks designed specifically for thundercats fit snugly along the transom and leave the deck uncluttered.

In recent years, the demand for efficient waterborne transportation has led to the development of high-speed catamarans. However, increased operating speeds result in elevated ship motions, making ride control systems desirable for passenger comfort, crew workability, and operational efficiency. This paper presents comprehensive towing tank experiments on a 2.5 m hydroelastic segmented catamaran model of a 112 m Incat Tasmania high-speed catamaran. These tests assess the impact of different ride control algorithms on the model’s motion and load responses, as well as passenger comfort in irregular head sea waves. The model featured a ride control system with a centrally positioned bow-fitted T-Foil and two stern-mounted stern tabs.
The study analysed ship motion responses, centre bow slam events, and the motion sickness dose value at specific longitudinal locations of the passenger cabin. The results showed that, in moderate waves, a nonlinear pitch control algorithm significantly improved performance, reducing RMS pitch and heave motions by around 32% and 29%, respectively, peak pitch and heave RAOs by 41% and 31%, respectively, and motion sickness at the forward position by 70%. The structural load analysis demonstrated a substantial reduction in the number of slams of 96% and 50% in small and large seas, respectively, using a nonlinear pitch control algorithm. These results demonstrate the considerable potential for further enhancing passenger comfort, structural response, and operational efficiency of high-speed catamarans using an effective ride control algorithm.
