Hunt Ocean 76 yacht tour: See inside this 3,800hp American beauty from a yachting pioneer

  • Top stories
  • yacht tours

Hugo Andreae takes us on a tour of the beautifully bespoke Hunt Ocean 76 motor yacht, which is built on a hull design from the legendary Raymond Hunt...

Deep-vee innovator C. Raymond Hunt is the brains behind this elegant motor yacht, which made its first inroads into the UK in 2019. Hunt Yachts, as a brand, may be unfamiliar in these parts but you can bet your bottom dollar you’ll recognise its lineage.

The man responsible for Hunt Yachts’ hull design is C. Raymond Hunt himself, a man credited as a pioneer of the deep-vee hull form and responsible for hulls from iconic brands such as Bertram Yachts and Boston Whaler as well as myriad offshore racers.

Hunt’s boats are renowned for their flawless high-speed seakeeping and ability to maintain those speeds in challenging conditions. Owned by the same group as Hinckley (of Picnic Boat fame), Hunt Yachts builds its largest Ocean range in Taiwan while commissioning and sea trials take place as its base in Portsmouth, Rhode Island.

The Hunt Ocean 76 resonates upscale Americana, particularly inside where it’s festooned with varnished cherry timber, pillowy cream upholstery and furniture that could have been plucked straight from the country club. Cutting-edge cool it is not but it’s proper and loaded with Down East charm.

This is a boat to be used to cover great distances at a decent lick; the standard engines are a pair of 1,600hp CAT C32s, good for a top speed of 29 knots but it’s the uprated 1,900hp motors capable of 31 knots and a 27-knot cruise that will really allow the athletic hull to sing.

Surfhunter 25

  • By Saltwater Sportsman Staff
  • Updated: September 21, 2007

surfhunter.jpg

The new Surfhunter 25 by Hunt Yachts is the reissue of a legendary New England coastal classic, with a few timely improvements. The Surfhunter maintains the original hull, with 24 degrees of deadrise, but has been augmented with wider submerged chines to improve stability at rest, and fitted with a Mercruiser Bravo III sterndrive. Standard power is a single 300-hp 5.7 Mercury Mag MPI Horizon gas engine linked via a driveshaft to the dual-prop Bravo III. Forward placement of the engine allows plenty of cockpit space for fishing, with full access to the transom.

Gunwales are redesigned for improved fishing comfort through the addition of under-gunwale rod racks, which increase toe room. Twin helm seating is standard. The helm is to starboard, and electronics can be either surface- or flush-mounted. A center hatch and companionway lead below to an enclosed trunk cabin featuring a vee-berth, room for a head, and counter space with room for a stove. A stainless sink and locker are standard. Boat Review: Hunt 25 Surfhunter CC

  • By Dean Travis Clarke
  • Updated: September 24, 2007

09surfhunter

Hunt Yachts in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, builds boats that fit its marquee – each one is a yacht. Every hull produced by this company turns heads (both male and female) as it passes by, attracting those with a taste for elegance as well as function. The Hunt 25 Surfhunter CC offers the same seaworthiness, classic good looks and ability to raise and catch fish found on boats much larger in size.

Performance Our test day couldn’t have been more beautiful: Sunny and calm with a gentle northerly breeze that didn’t generate any wave action even remotely challenging for the Surfhunter to negotiate. The best I could find was a large jet-powered motor-yacht, creating a 5-foot wake as it cruised past Brenton Reef Light on its way into historic Newport Harbor. Hitting that wake at cruising speed in both directions proved to be a non-event. Aligning the hull broadside to the wake to test its beam sea roll-moment, I found a short roll with very gentle transitions. Overall, the 25 Surfhunter cuts into head seas beautifully with no pounding and an extremely dry ride. I found it equally dry heading down-sea with nary a swerve at the back of the next wave.

The Surfhunter’s propulsion – an 8.1 liter, 375-hp Volvo Penta Ocean Series gas I/O – pushed her up on plane in just under 3 seconds. Wide-open throttle touched 42.2 knots at 4,850 rpm and the most economical cruising speed turned out to be a sweet spot right around 30 knots sipping a mere 13 gph.

Optional engine packages include the smaller 260-hp Volvo Diesel I/O or IB, 375-hp Volvo Ocean Series IB or a single 315-hp Yanmar diesel jet drive. I can tell you that maneuvering with the latter will amaze you. And before you say, “I have no interest in a sterndrive boat,” consider this: With the Ocean Series gas inboard coupled via a jackshaft to Volvo Penta’s nearly indestructible composite outdrive, you don’t need to worry about corrosion or hitting debris.

At dead-bait trolling speeds the boat produces an absolutely clear wake.

Our test boat reversed course in two boat lengths by leaning hard into the turn, smoothly bleeding off speed and never once pushing my passengers toward the outboard rail. When docking, you’ll surely appreciate that the Surfhunter backs up with exquisite control, again due to the counter-rotating propellers. About the only factor I didn’t like was the minor “wandering” the 25 exhibits at idle speed. Before the end of our sea trial, I had gotten used to it. And as soon as you boost the rpm slightly, it tracks straight and true.

Hunt makes its own adjustable helm and companion seats in-house and offers both seating and leaning-post configurations.

Around the cockpit, Hunt provides storage for three rods under the covering boards and two in each gunwale, with an option for more across the back of the hardtop. The transom holds a sink, freshwater washdown on a hose and a livewell.

For anyone with an appreciation for the fine yachting tradition, this little yacht overcomes the limitations of its size to epitomize the art of boatbuilding at its finest.

Hunt Yachts 32 CC

  • By Kevin Falvey
  • Updated: September 14, 2015

hunt yachts review

That Hunt Yachts’ 32 CC performs better than most boats should come as no surprise, given Hunt’s legacy and the fact that many other builders utilize Hunt’s design services. Notable is that the 32 CC maintains better than 1 mpg efficiency no matter how hard and how fast you run it. The 32 CC also achieves plane without an abrupt hump, an ability appreciated for the clear sight lines it provides as well as for being related to this boat’s ability to maintain plane at just 11.8 knots. Staying on top at slow speed is appreciated for maintaining steerage in rough weather or while running in the dark. Hard-over turns with the twin, Yamaha F300 outboards turning 5,000 rpm proved the boat will tolerate overexuberant helmspersons (or emergency maneuvers).

As to its mission, the 32 CC rates as a luxury SUV, though that image falls short given that a truck simply takes you to activities while the 32 CC is integral to all kinds of fun. It’s fitted with a leaning post that deftly incorporates a grill with a livewell and tackle stowage with space for a buffet. The C-shaped bow lounge is luxuriously upholstered — in a material that will resist sun, salt, fish blood and spilled drinks. Clever rod stowage hides to starboard. Beneath the port lounge is an insulated fish box that also serves as a cooler or general stowage. Like all boxes aboard the 32 CC, this one drains directly overboard for safety and convenience. There’s a table to serve crew seated here, and the genius of connecting the center-console to the port side of the boat becomes apparent when you see how much space that adds to this bow lounge — and to the cabin.

Check out this video to experience a unique feature of the Hunt 32 CC!

We walked down, rather than climbed, belowdecks to discover a bright space that immediately dispelled any notions we may have had about using words such as cave, dank or cramped as descriptors. A pleasant space into which crew can retreat proves essential to the day-boat mission. Here, we were pleased at the flood of sunlight pouring in through the fixed, flush-mounted window across the front face of the console. An opening port ensures ventilation. The single berth and a microwave-equipped “galley-ette” provide a just-right amount of domesticity. To privatize the head, Hunt utilized a bifold door, rather than a bulkhead and door. Open, this hides the commode and cabin space is increased. Closed, you have as much privacy as you can expect aboard a 32-footer.

Taking Flight with the Hunt Harrier 36

  • By Patrick Sciacca
  • Updated: February 19, 2018

Hunt Harrier 36

The Hunt Yachts Harrier 36 was based on C. Raymond Hunt’s renowned deep-V hull form. Matched to optional 440 hp Yanmar diesels (370 hp diesels were standard), the hull made 36-plus knots in 3- to 4-footers on our test day back in 2002.

Notable Features: An electric Stidd helm seat and satin-finish cherry joinery, plus hydraulic rams that lift the bridge deck for engine access.

Belowdecks: A queen berth offered weekend-long cruising capability.

Availability: At press time, we found two Hunt Harrier 36s on the market: a 2010 with twin 435 hp Volvo Penta diesels and Hamilton water jets for $495,000, and a 2003 with twin 470 hp Yanmar straight-shaft diesels for $220,000.

From the Archives: “Performance and strength are derived from the Airex core in the hull and Airlite in the deck and superstructure. The E-glass and epoxy resins are vacuum-bagged and oven-cured. Carbon fiber is used to stiffen the longitudinal stringers without adding weight.” — Yachting , October 2002

Trout Unlimited plans Spokane River Scavenger Hunt

From staff reports

Anglers who know the Spokane River well can test their mettle against others in a scavenger hunt with a fly rod next month.

The Spokane Falls chapter of Trout Unlimited has planned the urban fly-fishing competition for Sept. 14.

Participants will compete in teams of two to catch fish between the Washington-Idaho border and the boat ramp at the Spokane wastewater treatment plant.

Point values are assigned to different fish, with most species counting for one point and the largescale sucker counting for three.

Quantity counts for nothing. The competition will be won by the anglers who catch the widest variety of species.

There will also be other ways to earn points, such as filling a trash bag with litter and photographing a crayfish.

The winners will receive a guided trip from local guide Marc Fryt.

The event will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. To sign up, email [email protected].

Family clings to hope of air pocket in sunken superyacht as debris hampers search

PORTICELLO, Sicily — Divers searching for six missing people from a superyacht which sank off the coast of Sicily told NBC News Wednesday that debris inside the vessel, as well as its depth, were making their job difficult.

As hopes of finding anyone alive dwindled, the divers said that they had managed to force open one of the Bayesian’s access doors but access to the cabins where people could be trapped was being hampered by detritus.

The divers, who were not authorized to speak publicly, added that the depth of the wreck meant they were left with only 10 minutes to search the 184-foot yacht once they reached it. Then they had to return to the surface, they said.

On Wednesday, the dock where they set off from was swarming with vehicles, boats and rescuers. Nearby tourists, reporters and photographers have gathered, eager for news. Helicopters occasionally fly over the area.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and five of the 22 other people who were aboard the yacht remain unaccounted for and are believed to be trapped in the Bayesian’s hull, nearly 170 feet underwater.

The Bayesian, which had 22 people aboard including 10 crew, was anchored some 700 metres from port before dawn when it was struck by a waterspout, a sort of mini tornado.

Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda, are also missing.

Officials confirmed Monday that at least one person, the ship’s cook, had died.

Rescuers said Tuesday that there might be people trapped inside the cabins, especially considering the timing of the storm, but that they had so far been unable to check through the ship’s portholes.

“The operations are long and complex,” Italy’s national fire department, whose diving teams have been participating in the search, said on X .

Italy's coast guard also said Tuesday that divers were also using a remotely-operated underwater vehicle to aid in the search.

Sailboat sinks off Sicily

The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was one of the 15 people rescued Monday after it capsized near Sicily’s main city of Palermo in what Italian officials called a “violent storm.”

Built by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered Bayesian could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters.

Lynch, who was regularly described in U.K. media as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” was acquitted by a San Francisco jury of fraud charges stemming from the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion.

The Bayesian, which had 22 people aboard including 10 crew, was anchored some 700 metres from port before dawn when it was struck by a waterspout, a sort of mini tornado.

Prosecutors alleged that Lynch and Autonomy’s vice president for finance, Stephen Chamberlain, had padded the firm’s finances ahead of the sale. Lynch’s lawyers argued that HP was so eager to acquire Autonomy that it failed to adequately check the books .

The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who brought Morvillo, one of his U.S. lawyers and Bloomer, who testified in his defense, on the trip.

Bloomer’s twin brother, Jeremy, told the BBC on Tuesday the family was “coping the best we can” and he was hopeful there might still be air pockets inside the hull.

Chamberlain was not aboard the Bayesian.

In what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a car struck and killed Chamberlain on Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said.

Claudio Lavanga and Claudia Rizzo reported from Porticello and Yuliya Talmazan from London.

Claudio Lavanga is Rome-based foreign correspondent for NBC News.

The former head of the Pentagon program responsible for the investigation of UFOs—now known as unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP)—reveals long-hidden secrets with profound implications for not only national security but our understanding of the universe.

Luis “Lue” Elizondo is a former senior intelligence official and special agent who was recruited into strange and highly sensitive US government program to investigate UAP. To accomplish his mission, Elizondo had to rely on decades of experience gained working some of America’s most classified programs. Even then, he was not prepared for what he would learn, including the truth about the government’s long shadowy involvement in UAP investigations, and the lengths officials would take to keep it a secret.

For years, Elizondo and his colleagues found themselves on the front lines of what may be the greatest mystery and cover-up in history. Unidentified craft that seem to defy our knowledge of physics — within air, water, and space — have been operating with complete impunity since at least World War II. The military, the CIA, and even past presidents have known the truth that humanity is, in fact, not the only intelligent life in the universe. The nonhuman intelligence controlling these UAP are actively conducting surveillance on our most sensitive military installations, and have interfered with ongoing military and nuclear operations. US service members and intelligence officers who have encountered UAP have sustained serious medical injuries. And all of this is happening worldwide.

The stakes could not be higher. Imminent is a first-hand, revelatory account inside the Pentagon’s most closely guarded secret and a call to action to confront humanity’s greatest existential questions.

Italy opens manslaughter investigation into Sicily yacht sinking

Italian prosecutors say no suspect has been identified in the investigation into the deaths of seven people after Monday’s sinking of the Bayesian.

Italian prosecutors said Saturday that they have opened an investigation into culpable shipwreck and manslaughter over the deaths of seven people in a yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily this week.

The British-flagged Bayesian sank in a storm off the northern coast of Sicily, after encountering what authorities called a “violent storm” early Monday, and sank to a depth of more than 160 feet. British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his teenage daughter Hannah were among those who died.

Ambrogio Cartosio, the head of the public prosecutor’s office of Termini Imerese, told a news conference Saturday that an investigation had begun but that no suspect has been identified so far.

“We are only in the initial phase of the investigation. We can’t exclude any sort of development at present,” he said, adding that “it is probable that offenses were committed, that it could be a case of manslaughter,” according to a translation by the Associated Press .

Cartosio said the captain, crew and passengers are under no legal obligation to remain in Italy, but authorities expect them to cooperate with the probe, Reuters news agency reported .

Fifteen people, including Lynch’s wife and Hannah’s mother, Angela Bacares, were rescued shortly after the 183-foot vessel sank.

The body of the yacht’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, was recovered during initial search efforts.

Four bodies were pulled from the wreckage Wednesday. They were identified as those of two couples: Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International; Judy Bloomer, a charity trustee; Chris Morvillo, a partner at the law firm Clifford Chance in New York; and Neda Morvillo, a jeweler.

Mike Lynch’s body was recovered Thursday, while the final body, that of his daughter Hannah, was recovered from the hull Friday.

The Bayesian is owned by a company controlled by Bacares, and several of the passengers had business or legal ties to Lynch. Chris Morvillo represented Lynch in a recently concluded legal battle. The voyage was intended to be a celebration of Lynch’s acquittal in the United States of fraud charges, Britain’s Telegraph newspaper reported .

Lynch, 59, co-founded Autonomy, once Britain’s largest software company, and the cybersecurity firm Darktrace, among other ventures.

He sold Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011 for more than $11 billion but was subsequently accused of overvaluing the company and charged by the United States with fraud. He was acquitted on all counts by a federal court in San Francisco in June.
