Lil Yachty Debuts 'Nuthin' 2 Prove' Album Featuring Juice WRLD, Cardi B, Kevin Gates

On the heels of Nuthin’ 2 Prove ‘s release, Billboard caught up with the rapper on a seasonably warm Saturday (Oct. 20) in Brooklyn, as he enjoyed some Marshmallow Fruity Pebbles for breakfast. Earlier in the morning, Drake shot Yachty a direct message complimenting his album opener “Gimme My Respect” and melodic flows on the second half of the project.

Billboard : How did you get involved with Axe to add another partnership to your decorated business resume?

Lil Yachty: It started earlier this year. Technically, I’ve been wearing Axe since the middle-school days. I had the chocolate Axe. So when the company reached out, I was all the way with it. It took me back to my childhood. Then they came up with the cool idea of doing a song where I leave the hook open for a fan. It went big. There’s been about 20,000 submissions already. I try to listen to a few. 

What do you think about brands embracing hip-hop and the younger generation of artists? I think you’re paving the way in that aspect. 

Yep, you took the words right out of my mouth. I was going to say that. Of course, it’s been done before, but it hasn’t happened as much. When I came in, is when it really started. I need the recognition. We got to figure it out. I’ve been trying to pave the way. It’s just not being done like this. It’s the biggest hip-hop has ever been. People want to be where it’s at and where it’s popping. It’s like playing video games. They’re selling out arenas too.

Why did you title your album Nuthin’ 2 Prove?

It had another name at first. I always felt like people judge me and they always have opinions and shit. They’ll say, “He can’t rap,” or “He can’t do this,” or “He fell off.” I always felt like I had something to prove. It’s always been, “I gotta show them that I can still rap. I gotta show them I can still make a hit or sell out a show.” I’ve been doing music for three years now, and at this point, I’m like, “Fuck them. I don’t give a fuck and I don’t have to prove anything.”

I can do both. I did Teenage Emotion, which was all melodic, and they hated it. Outside my fan base and inside, I kind of lost a lot of fans for that. Lil Boat 2 people liked, but it was all rap. Some thought it was too much. This time, I just did half and half. People said I was trying to copy Drake. I didn’t do two sides, this is one tape. 

Why did you want to come back with your second album of 2018, less than seven months after Lil Boat 2 ?

Shit, I feel like I got another album. I might come back again. I’m going to drop a collab tape in December. I got one done with Juice WRLD, and me and Trippie Redd got one. Both tapes are done. 

That’s dope. Both of them appeared on Nuthin’ 2 Prove . Walk me through “Yacht Club” with Juice WRLD, first.

We got a bunch of songs just like that. We just be in the studio recording. We got hella songs together. This song was actually supposed to go on our tape. It’s crazy, the first song I had for my album was called “Knuck If You Buck” and it’s hard. We just couldn’t find a session. My engineer was listening to my shit and told me, “I ain’t going to lie bro, ‘Yacht Club’ is hard.” I trusted him and switched it. 

What did you think about him jabbing at Drake for knocking up a porn star?

At the time, we were in the booth together actually. He said it and I was like, “Wow, okay.” [ Sighs. ] I talked to Drake about it and he said it was all good. He felt there was really no harm. I told Drake before, because I fuck with Drake. Then it came out and he laughed at it. 

Yeah. Shit made me so happy, bro. This was the first album I’ve done where I felt so much love. I felt love on Lil Boat 2 . People say my first project, Lil Boat , was my best project, but I didn’t feel it because I was so new and it took a minute to grow. This is the first project I’m feeling people are really fucking with. Like, Drake hit me about my album. I never asked him to post that for me, he did that on his own. For him to do that, that shit is crazy. I fuck with Drake. It was last night and I was still awake.

You teamed up with Trippie Redd on “Forever World” again.

“Forever World” was originally his song. He played it for me and I was almost scared to ask him to get on it because it was so good. His assistant CJ was actually singing the background vocals on it. He had put his album out and I knew he was going to use it on there. We were actually supposed to put that song on our project but he was bullshitting. So I said, “Let me get it.” He’s like, “Man, you can get whatever you want from me.” I put a second verse on it and then dropped that bitch. 

Would you want to release the joint tape before the year’s out?

If he don’t bullshit.

What happened with the Glacier Boyz project’s release?

So I came across this Kanye West leak titled “Face Down” with you and Quavo. What’s the origin of that track?

That’s funny. That song is from 2016. It was at Kanye’s studio in Los Angeles. I went to his studio one time with A$AP Rocky early 2016 before Lil Boat came out and I did Yeezy Season 3. I was quiet and I had to sign an NDA. This was when Kanye was working on The Life of Pablo.

There was so many artists there, and I was so new and unknown that I was sitting outside in the lobby with the groupies when Rocky would take me around. I couldn’t even go in the room. I was just watching Kid Cudi , Big Sean , Tyler, The Creator all walk in. I was just sitting on the ground. A couple months went by and Kanye invited me in. He played me all these records and had me put verses on all this stuff, and we did “Face Down” a long time ago. I still love Kanye. 

I feel like you’re gearing up to eventually pivot out of music and into film and entertainment. I know you have a plan. 

I’m on the way to take over acting. 

Word, I can see that. It reminds me of following the blueprint of another Atlanta artist in Ludacris. 

I fuck with Ludacris, heavy. He’s a smart guy. I met him a couple times and I’m glad you said that — I’m about to hit him up. I love music, but this is a lot. 

I saw you tweet about making leaving big tips a priority, what made you want to make sure you properly give back?

My mother always taught me a lot of important life lessons and she would always tell me how important it was to tip. We didn’t have much money, so we would tip what we could. Now, it’s at the point I’m financially stable. When I’m out eating, I hope I have the cash, but  if I write it on the receipt, I’ll leave a big tip. What’s big to them is probably small to me. It doesn’t hurt to leave 100 dollars or 150 dollars extra. Because I would do that at the strip club, where I’m gonna be throwing money.

Lil Yachty makes it look easy. An Atlanta-raised rapper with a sleepy flow and a bright, almost childlike outlook, Yachty (born Miles Parks McCollum in 1997) rose to prominence in 2016 with a pair of mixtapes (Lil Boat and Summer Songs 2) that recast the booming caverns of 2010s rap as something soft, sweet, intuitive, and a little goofy—a sound Yachty once called “bubblegum trap.” Dozens of features and guest appearances followed, including cosigns from Kanye, Chance the Rapper, Calvin Harris, and Macklemore. In 2017, he released his first full-length album, Teenage Emotions. His second, 2018’s Lil Boat 2, took a harder, darker turn but retained the clarity that made his early music stand out. Like Lil Uzi Vert (or Young Thug before him), Yachty represents a turn away from the conventional metrics of rap, favoring slogans over bars, hooks over metaphors, fluidity over stricture, and vibe above all. (He famously—or infamously, depending on your stance toward tradition—once told Billboard that he couldn’t name five songs by either 2Pac or Biggie.) But he’s also emblematic of a broader shift from understanding rap music as an end in itself to seeing it as an extension of the person who made it, a facet of a bigger image or experience. No wonder he FaceTimes with fans, or started his career primarily as a presence on Instagram—for him, the project is social. Still, it wouldn’t make a difference if the music itself weren’t striking—and if he weren’t so casual about it too. Speaking to Beats 1’s Zane Lowe shortly before releasing Teenage Emotions, Yachty—guileless and ever-intuitive—said, “I didn’t know [my sound] was different. I didn’t know until it took off. Then I was like, ‘Well, I don’t sound like nobody else.’” He paused. “I don’t even know if that’s a good or a bad thing. But it’s a thing. It’s a thing.” Yachty’s only expanded his sonic appetite. In 2021, he paid homage to Detroit-area rap with Michigan Boy Boat, an album that saw him adopt the jittery soundscapes and deadpan bars of the region. He added to his repertoire once again with 2023’s Let’s Start Here., a psychedelic rock album that sees Yachty stretch his vocals and soundscapes in even more unpredictable directions. From there, he released Concrete Boys, the debut project from his Concrete imprint. Featuring dexterous flows and spurts of melody from his crew, the 2024 effort affirmed his knack for curation and aesthetics. He’s graduated to a well-tended status as an industry tastemaker and a spitter capable of trading bars with J. Cole. On the track “The Secret Recipe,” we find Lil Boat rapping about being the source of plenty of rap and fashion trends. It’s a fitting song title for a young veteran who’s made a career out of good taste.

Rapper Lil Yachty has been cast in the lead role of the MTV film “How High 2,”  Variety has learned exclusively.

The film began production in Atlanta today. It is a follow up to the 2001 stoner comedy “How High” starring Method Man and Redman. It will premiere on MTV in 2019.

Lil Yachty plays Roger, an entrepreneur and the younger brother of one of the protagonists from the original film. Per the official description by MTV, Roger and his friend go “on a magical hash-fueled journey to fund their on-demand munchies delivery start-up.”

This will not be Lil Yacthy’s first acting role. He previously appeared as himself in an episode of George Lopez’s TV Land series “Lopez” and provided the voice for Green Lantern in the hit animated film “Teen Titans Go! To the Movies.” The Atlanta rapper also acted in a very different recent project: an improbable sing-dong duet with ‘70s teen-pop icon Donny Osmond for Chef Boyardee. “Start The Par-dee,” a full-length jingle that debuted as a music video and an original track on streaming outlets last month. It’s the most recent in a series of high-profile commercial team-ups for the Atlanta rapper, who’s also worked with  Target & Carly Rae Jepsen  as well as  Sprite & Lebron James  (and released his second full-length album, “Lil Boat 2,” last March).

“How High 2” is written by Alex Blagg, Neel Shah, Shawn Ries, and Artie Johann. Bruce Leddy will direct. Shauna Garr returns as an executive producer alongside Mike Elliott, who will produce. Lil Yachty will also executive produce alongside Kevin “Coach K” Lee, Pierre “Pee” Thomas, and Brian Sher for Quality Control, which is moving into film production. Josh Vodnoy, Morgana Rosenberg, and Jason Goldberg serve as executive producers for MTV. The film is produced by MTV and Universal 1440 Entertainment.

Maybe We Know a Little Too Much About Lil Yachty

Last year, I spoke with Lil Yachty about mystique. Our conversation about his Let’s Start Here album got awkward when he told me he didn’t want to reveal too much about its creation. I asked him about plans to release a documentary he recorded about the project, and he told me, “I doubt I’ll drop it. Just like me not wanting to do any of these interviews. I don’t really care to talk about it, [because] you give it all away [when] you pull the curtain back.”

When I asked him if he put a premium on artists with an allure of mystery when he was younger, he told me, “Coming up, you didn’t have all this social media. Even if [they] did an interview, you didn’t get every element of something. It’s the simple things you knew, but they left a lot of room for ‘Wow, how did he make this?’… Which is the beauty in art.” 

“I think Chapter One of my career is extremely oversaturated,” he told me. “I was thinking … I’m easily accessible. I’m on TikTok. I’m on YouTube. I’m on Twitter. I’m just everywhere. I didn’t like that.” But 18 months after our conversation, it feels like Yachty’s would-be triumphant next chapter is being marred by the same overexposure.

Yachty’s rap career is defined by a collage of viral moments. His first single, 2015’s “One Night,” went viral on SoundCloud. He came into public consciousness during the 2016 live stream of Yeezy Season 3. His “Minnesota” hit was the score to the hip-hop generational war being waged on rap Twitter, with his ignorance of Biggie and 2Pac’s catalog not helping things. And his Everyday Struggle admission that he didn’t know the full details of his QC contract made him fodder for anyone seeking to soapbox about naive rappers signing bad deals. Yachty saw all of the criticism, and he pushed back, arguably losing the musical charm that made him a distinct artist by trying to prove he could rap. He told me, that during that period, “I was trying to be the spokesman for the new generation because no one else wanted to talk. I felt, ‘I’m going to stand up. I’m going to speak.’”

But it never stays strictly about the music with Yachty. During a Let’s Start Here listening event, he told the crowd he “wanted to be taken seriously as an artist and not just a SoundCloud rapper, not just a mumble rapper, not just a guy that made one hit.” Some people felt his comments implied that being “just” a rapper was inferior, but he told me that was “absolutely not” what he was trying to say. Regardless of his clarification, the perception of elitism stuck, and was intensified when he surmised that “hip-hop is in a terrible place” during our November 2023 Musicians on Musicians l ive event .

During an emotionally charged Instagram Live session, he claimed that he wrote all of Karrahbooo’s music and threw the remaining Concrete Boys under the bus by claiming he dressed all of them. He and Karrahbooo have since been taking to their stories to clap back at each other, making a bad situation worse. Yachty’s currently being lambasted as the kind of person who can’t wait to tell the world what they did for you — you never wanna be that guy. 

Perhaps people are letting the jokes fly for the moment, and Yachty dropping the right song will shift all the attention away from his mic miscues. Maybe Yachty doesn’t care what the public thinks. But it’s interesting to watch someone who’s repeatedly referenced not wanting to be accessible, and wishing he hadn’t opened his mouth, seemingly be unable to help himself from speaking out — in frequently self-sabotaging ways. It feels like the same digital soil that fertilized Yachty’s career is also his quicksand.

How lil yachty landed a big fortune with his $8 million net worth.

If you’ve been tuned into the landscape of rap music for the last decade or so, you’re no doubt familiar with the work of Lil Yachty. T he Grammy nominated Georgia rapper is responsible for releasing such hits as “Yacht Club,” “Oprah’s Bank Account,” “Pardon Me.” Most recently, his hit “Poland” met with viral success. Since first emerging on the scene in 2015, the rising star has made a name for himself. He’s regarded for his unique image, positive message, and subversive musical range. The rapper’s latest full-length solo album Let’s Start Here completely reinvented his sound for a new audience. Today, Lil Yachty has a net worth of over $8 million according to Celebrity Net Worth . However, comments from the artist himself seem to suggest his actual nest egg is worth significantly more.

He inquired about his placement to the event director, explaining that his vibrant red hair perfectly matched the Aesthetic of Kanye’s latest colorways.

Per his interview, Yachty explained, “They switched it around and like bam, they put me in the front. That opened doors for me. A lot of fashion doors opened up after that.” Years later, Yachty revealed via social media that he had moved back into his mother’s home at the time. The artist explained that he was literally down to his last $70 during the Yeezy show. Clearly, his ascension to millionaire status came fast, and saved him from the throes of poverty.

Just one month after appearing in the Yeezy fashion show, Lil Yachty released his debut mixtape, Lil Boat . Lil Boat helped put him on the map for many listeners of the SoundCloud era . Later in 2016, the rising star would see his first Billboard charting hit, with the DRAM collaboration “Broccoli.” The track remains one of Yachty’s biggest singles to date. The rapper quickly found further success after signing to Quality Control Music and joining the likes of Denzel Curry, 21 Savage, Lil Uzi Vert, and more on the 2016 XXL Freshman cover. Since hard-launching his music career in 2015, Lil Yachty has delivered 5 full-length solo studio albums and 3 mixtapes. Most recently, he hopped on a collaborative album with English singer-songwriter and record producer James Blake. While Lil Yachty’s biggest financial successes obviously stem from his streaming and tour revenue, the artist has also managed to bring in plenty of cash from lucrative brand deals and collaborations with other entertainers. The rapper famously appeared alongside NBA legend LeBron James in a 2017 promotional campaign for Sprite. The campaign saw Yachty sitting at a piano inside an ice cavern, and performing a parody of his own hit song, with lyrics that encouraged consumers to purchase the soft drink. Also in 2017, Yachty announced partnerships with clothing brands such as Nautica and Urban Outfitters, which saw him acting as the face of the brands for the entire Spring season. Since then, Lil Yachty has collaborated with massive brands which include Target, Fortnite, and McDonald’s.

The rising business magnate has also utilized his star-power for a number of crossover deals in the world of entertainment, including a few film and television placements. In 2020, Lil Yachty provided a new and improved rendition of the Saved by the Bell theme song. The new twist on the tune was used for the television revival series of the same name. Likewise, he crafted an original theme tune for Chef Boyardee to use in their ad campaigns. What’s more, he featured on the 25th anniversary soundtrack album for the Pokémon franchise.

Lil Yachty and Karrahbooo’s Feud Escalates With Bullying Accusations

Lil Yachty and Karrahbooo Continue Throwing Shots at Each Other

On Sunday (Aug. 25), Lil Yachty hopped on his Instagram Story to address Karrahbooo's claims about writing her own rhymes and being bullied. Karrahbooo was part of Yachty's Concrete Boys collective. Although Yachty didn't directly address the 27-year-old rhymer, his message suggested that he clapped back at her allegations.

"Don't throw rocks and hide your hands," Boat wrote on his IG Story post below.

After catching wind of the Atlanta rapper's message, Karrahbooo posted a lengthy statement on her Instagram Story about supporting others in times of need and alluded to Yachty picking on her.

"I'll never forget this feeling, this chapter of my life. I'll never be the same," Karrahbooo penned in her IG Story. "I'll never forget who was there for me. I done chopped people out/spent my last/slapped folks 4 ni**as. I ride every time naturally, but that's just how I am. Nobody owe me sh*t tbh I'm just taking a mental note. I can't even look at most people da same way. To know the truth and watch a grown man with 12 million followers overly lie on my name and publicly bully me for literally no reason at all while I silently been conquering all da sh*t ni**as been throwing me this whole time behind closed doors. I'll never ignore the signs again, and I will never stop, no matter how much they hate me."

In her next IG Story post, Karrahbooo responded to Yachty's aforementioned message, insisting that they could discuss their issues on the phone. She also stated that she just wanted to make peace with individuals in the music scene.

"I never threw rocks and u have my number you big grown b**ch. Leave me alone literally @lilyachty," she typed in her IG Story post. "I never said nothing about sh*t and I still ain't say nothing 'bout what's really going on. I don't want no beef wit you industry people. Just move on wit ur life. Stop tryna bring me down when I stay out the way. I'm done talking. You got it. Yo character gone speak for itself."

Why are lil yachty and karrahbooo beefing.

Things went south between Lil Yachty and Karrahbooo after a fan shared a post on social media and claimed that after bumping into Karrahbooo at a restaurant, the rapper told her she was kicked out of Concrete Boys and bullied during her time on the label . On Aug. 22, Lil Yachty went live on Instagram and denied Karrahbooo's bullying allegations . Boat said Karrahbooo was actually the one bullying others.

"Tell people how you talk to people," Yachty said in his heated video below. "How you tell my security guard, 'Oh, you homeless. You work for me. You're poor. We above you.' You talk to people like they nothing...Tell people how you verbally abuse people. How you said you gon' spit on me when you see me."

"I been letting you do this whole thing where you act like you a princess and you sweet," he continued. "Stop the front, bro. We have withheld your actions since the beginning of me giving you this career. What the f**k are we talking about, bro. You don't even do nothing. It's so crazy to me, bro. ’Cause I've given you a career, and from time to time, you just disrespect me.

Boat then mentioned that Karrahbooo has a $900,000 debt to his label. Afterward, the Quality Control rhymer leaked his reference track to Karrahbooo's 2023 On The Radar Freestyle , suggesting that she didn't pen the lyrics.

Karrahbooo Claps Back at Lil Yachty's Claims About Writing Her Lyrics

On Aug. 23, Karrahbooo went on her Instagram Story to clap back at Yachty by sharing three songs she claimed to write and highlighted their streaming counts.

"Running Late," boasted over 7 million streams, "Where Yo Daddy," garnered 3 million streams and the On the Radar Concrete Cypher freestyle hit nearly 3 million streams.

Karrahbooo captioned the image, "put it on yo kid i ain't these songs [M]iles[.] Stop da cap and leave me out ur internet shenanigans [tears of joy emoji]."

She continued: "Stop bullying me big dawg [tears of joy emoji] i never said nothing u letting random fans get in yo head man up."

During her performance at the Dig in Day Festival in Chicago on Aug. 24, Karrahbooo suggested that Yachty's ghostwriting claims were false.

"Who ain't write it, who ain't write it," she rapped during her performance in the video below.

Rapper Miles Parks McCollum - better known by his stage name, Lil Yachty - was born in Mableton, Ga., on Aug. 23, 1997. He first gained fame in August 2015 with the release of his singles "One Night" and "Minnesota." That fall, he dropped out of Alabama State University to pursue his musical career, which saw him release his debut mixtape "Lil Boat" in March 2016. On June 10 of that year, Lil Yachty announced that he had signed a joint venture record deal with Quality Control Music, Capitol Records and Motown Records. His debut studio album, "Teenage Emotions," came out on May 26, 2017. His follow-up album, "Lil Boat 2," was released on March 9, 2018. Lil Yachty described his musical style as "bubblegram trap" for his sampling sounds that range from "Mario Bros." audio and the theme from long-running animated series "Rugrats" to the startup sound of a Nintendo GameCube video-game console. Outside of music, he debuted as a model for Kanye West's Yeezy Season 3 fashion line at New York's Madison Square Garden in February 2016.
