Innovative, high-tech composite materials constitute most of the structure of our sailing catamarans: hulls, flybridge, decks, bulkheads and more. Fountaine Pajot has perfected a resin injection and infusion technique, an advanced technology that gives our boats all their robustness. Thanks to this expertise, we can make our catamarans considerably lighter while maintaining consistent quality . Injection also makes it possible to meet the most stringent environmental requirements, in line with the commitments of the Fountaine Pajot Group.

Sailing catamarans from 40 to 50 feet are built at the Aigrefeuille headquarters, a few kilometres from La Rochelle. Catamaran yachts from 51 to 80 feet are built in La Rochelle, France, where they benefit from a slipway.

It is essential to define your sailing program: define the size of the crew on board, the level of sailing knowledge, the sailing project and the target sailing area. Every project is different. The ergonomics of Fountaine Pajot catamarans have been designed to facilitate manoeuvring at the helm, enabling a small crew (2 persons) to manoeuvre the boat easily, both in port and at sea. The unique design of the helm station allows good communication between the aft cockpit and the Fly relaxation areas. Of course, your level of navigation will determine your ability to sail with two or more persons!

Our electric catamarans now feature a large surface area of solar panels, up to 2000 WC, perfectly integrated into the design of the coachroof. Combined with equipment such as wind turbines or hydro-generators, they compensate for the energy consumption generated by on-board use during cruising. Fountaine Pajot, one of the foremost builders of sailing catamarans, unveiled their biggest “ Super Catamaran ” ever: the Thira 80.

The release comes on the tail of an ever-increasing trend in the catamaran market—the bigger-the- better era . With Sunreef, Lagoon, and Gunboat all making boats in the 70 to 80-foot range, these companies clearly see a market for the catamaran superyacht.

Boats this size are easily comparable to a motor yacht of more than 125 feet long. The very wide beam provides cavernous interiors for more livable space. And they have plenty of room for the toys of the trade—tenders, jet skis, paddleboards, and more.

While sailing is always preferable, its 175 to 300-horsepower engines are more than capable of moving it on calm days. And it’s hard to beat the ride and comfort of a catamaran at sea, with its extra stability and lack of heeling in the wind.

So, is bigger really better? Let’s dive in and tour the new Fountaine Pajot 80 and all that she has to offer.

Fountaine Pajot 80 Catamaran Review: A New Level of Luxury

Fountaine Pajot’s latest luxury catamaran is also their biggest—the Thira 80. Designed to compete with motor yachts over 100 feet long, the spacious vessel boasts more living space than any other charter cat, with excellent sailing performance to boot.

Also, the Fountaine Pajot 80 features innovative design offerings and accommodations that will make you reconsider the need for a motor yacht.

Here’s a look at this brand-new, state-of-the-art catamaran design’s design, aesthetics, performance, comfort, and technology.

Big, Elegant Design and Aesthetics of the Fountaine Pajot 80

At first glance, it’s easy to see the lineage of the Thira 80—it is undeniably a new-generation Fountaine Pajot, and it is clearly an extension of the Samana 59 and Alegria 67. Her striking grey hulls provide a nice contrast for the sea of other white catamarans in the fleet, and the impressive amount of lounging space is well situated to not make the yacht look bulky.

The 80 has a solid foredeck with no trampolines, making even more space for lounging on what FP calls the “Beach Club.” Sunlounges and an optional jacuzzi hot tub are located forward, with a recessed lounge before the salon. A watertight door directly into the salon and wide side decks with tall bulwarks allow easy access forward.

The boat also features unique side cockpits with fold-down wings, providing an unobstructed sea view.

With a 36-foot beam, there’s ample space for storage and small craft. This is an important element of the yacht lifestyle, with charter companies competing on amenities carried on board.

Below the cockpit lounge seating, Fountaine Pajot has included a special area with room for a water scooter, jet ski, or dive equipment . On the forepeaks, there are shallow wells for paddleboards and more gear.

The dinghy platform is on hydraulics to make a swim terrace. There’s room for up to a 4.3-meter tender.

Performance and Handling of the Fountaine Pajot 80

The Thira 80 is certainly a big boat, but in true Fountaine Pajot spirit, the boat still moves under sail. Her upwind sail area is over 3,500 square feet (325 square meters).

Cruise speed for this boat in most conditions will be around 10 knots, with a maximum of about 13. 

However, sailing performance numbers are hard to come by since the yacht is such a new design.

All line handling is led to twin flybridge helms, removing clutter from the lower salon and centralizing the crew area. Electric winches make sail handling easier. The proven fractional rig is as simple as it gets, and there are electric furlers on the working genoa and light-wind Code Zero.

Three engine options are available from the factory—175, 250, or 300 horsepower.

Comfort and Amenities Onboard the Fountaine Pajot 80

The Fountaine Pajot 80 is an enormous catamaran; it’s important not to forget that it would take a 120 to 150-foot monohull to get this amount of accommodations and living space. At 80 feet, she’s one of the largest production catamarans you can buy today.

The boat is offered in three main layout versions.

The Maestro, or owner’s version, has a large owner’s stateroom and bathroom, an impressive VIP stateroom and bathroom, and two guest cabins with double berths and ensuite heads.

The VIP version includes the large VIP or owner’s stateroom, bathroom, and four guest cabins with double berths and baths.

Finally, there’s the six-cabin version, which features six separate cabins with en suite private bathrooms and showers.

With all of the above versions, the crew has separate accommodations. These include a private double berth for the captain, two single bunks for the crew, and a crew mess area. The crew area is separate from the guest cabins, and the captain’s cabin has access to the cockpit via a gull-wing door. Additional crew accommodations can be fitted in the forepeak lockers if needed.

There are a few other choices to be made when you design your Thira 80. A big selection is where you would like your galley—up or down.

The galley-up design places the chef on the salon deck in the middle of the social space. This is generally preferred on private boats. But on a boat this size with crew to do the cooking, the galley down option places more social space in the salon and moves the galley to the crew area.

Fountaine Pajot 80: A Titan of Technology and Innovation

There are a few notable innovations on Fountaine Pajot’s new flagship.

While the boat retains a profile distinct from the company, a few unique features jump out.

The boat is fitted with wide, safe side decks, making transiting to the bow safe and easy. The bulwarks are high. However, to ensure a clean line of sight for those seated in the salon, there are glass panels in the gunwales so they do not block the view.

There are also ample built-in solar options in the Thira. Flexible photovoltaics are nothing new, and Fountaine Pajot has included a stunning four kilowatts of them on the flybridge and salon roof areas.

But the design can be upgraded further with another 4.2 kilowatts built into the clear overhead panels. These glass overheads are found on the edges of the cockpit roof and in sunroof panels over the salon and flybridge. The effect of these lets filtered light come through, increasing the feel of openness throughout the yacht while also producing a great deal of useable power.

The layout of the Thira continues a trend of other recent Fountaine Pajot projects, namely the Samana 59 and Alegria 67, that include spacious forward lounges. Additionally, the boat has a robust water-tight door that leads directly into the interior salon, much like the smaller Leopard catamarans feature, like the Leopard 50 .

The Thira 80 goes a few steps further and includes a solid foredeck for even more space, with an optional jacuzzi hot tub on the forepeak and large paddleboard lockers on top of each side deck.

The Thira 80 also features fold-down “wings” or terraces on the cockpit edges. These offer increased deck space and better visibility for those facing out toward the sea and beautifully complement the outward-facing seating around the cockpit edges.

Fountaine Pajot 80 vs. Other Luxury Catamarans 

It’s impossible not to compare the Fountaine Pajot 80 to the Lagoon Seventy7, released in 2020. When you look at the specifications, the two boats are remarkably similar. Like the Lagoons, the Fountaine Pajot 80 will be offered in sail and motor yacht versions. Both are flybridge yachts with similar layouts.

The Thira 80 is also Fountaine’s answer to the successful line of “super cats” from Sunreef. The Sunreef 80 shares a similar layout, and the Sunreef Eco line aims to incorporate solar, electric power, and eco-conscious designs into the yacht lifestyle.

For motor yacht purists, however, Fountaine Pajot’s motor yacht version might prove compelling for private owners.

Concluding Thoughts: Who is the Fountaine Pajot 80 Right For?

Overall, the Thira 80 is a modern and innovative luxury catamaran built to harness the top-end charter boat market. Like their primary rival, Lagoon, the French builder has honed in on the superyacht segment—a catamaran so large that it competes on the level of a superyacht .

The Fountaine Pajot 80 is a big catamaran–a super catamaran, in fact–built to be handled by a crew of two or more while entertaining six or more guests. For this purpose, it is ideally suited.

While the Thira 80 is nowhere near the 145-foot Hemesphere superyacht, Fountaine Pajot’s latest and biggest is truly impressive.

It’s easy to see the Thira 80 as a very successful addition to the charter fleets in busy markets like the Mediterranean, BVIs, French Polynesia, and Thailand.

The Sunreef 80 is an all-around luxury sailing catamaran , ideal for exclusive getaways, charter, and transoceanic adventures. This model boasts a combination of exterior and interior areas easily flowing into one another. The clever bridge deck and superstructure design allow for a superior level of comfort onboard, whereas the generous teak use, high bulwarks, and classy lines underscore her modern style with a classic edge.

With a completely fresh superstructure concept, this electric sailing catamaran gains a saloon plan with an outstanding potential for customization. A vast, central lounging space with a panoramic view and endless layout possibilities, it opens both onto the bow terrace and cockpit. The bow benefits from its cozy lounge that is well shielded from sun and wind.

To the aft, the saloon merges with the generous cockpit which is further extended by a large aft platform for carrying the tender. All the areas combined form a universal, open environment where flexibility and freedom reign. While housing the main helm, the 54m² flybridge is dedicated to leisure with more than enough space for movable furniture, a jacuzzi, fully equipped wet bar, a barbecue station, and large sunpads.

The hulls provide impressive volumes to set up a custom layout including airy, luxurious guest cabins, and an opulent master suite with a walk-in dressing, desk, sofa, retractable TV, and an immense bathroom. A perfect setting to unwind and relax after a long day in the sun.

Fountaine Pajot reveals a new 80-foot power catamaran yacht

A new model in the Fountaine Pajot Power Catamaran ranger to meet the needs of an increasingly demanding clientele.

Back in September 2022, the shipyard announced it was commencing construction of  the largest cruising catamaran  ever to be built by Fountaine Pajot, measuring some 80 feet (24 metres) in length and just over 36 feet (11 metres) in beam. One year on, and this superlative  luxury multiyacht  was leaving the Fountaine Pajot shipyard in La Rochelle before heading off to the Cannes Yachting Festival on France’s Mediterranean coast, where her inauguration afloat was eagerly awaited. Named the  Thíra 80  at the event, this  super catamaran  attracted the interest of many visitors to the show and has convinced future buyers. This is a major project for the catamaran specialist, who has risen to the industrial challenge to offer a  new large yacht  with a fine design, combining  innovation ,  luxury  and  comfort .

The arrival of a Power 80 in the Motor Yachts range to meet the expectations and demands of yachtsmen.

At a press conference held during the 2023 Cannes Yachting Festival, Fountaine Pajot announced details of its plans to offer a  motor yacht  version of its new  80-foot catamaran , in response to the growing popularity of the  Thíra 80 . This future  Power 80  will feature a number of modifications to adapt to the specific needs of a clientele accustomed to  large luxury yachts , both monohulls and multihulls.

In terms of layout and design, the  Power 80  will incorporate many of the same features that have made the  Thíra 80  such a success. These include the large windows in the saloon, with glazing that’s lower than usual, giving an unobstructed  view over the sea  when seated on the sofas on the starboard side or in the small saloon area to port.

The new catamaran will also feature the famous “ wings ” on either side of the  aft cockpit , offering the possibility of two  terraces overlooking the sea . Numerous  storage  compartments in the forward cockpit, aft cockpit and the sugarscoops will allow you to stow all your leisure gear out of the way, such as paddleboards, diving equipment or even a  jet ski …

As for habitability and the number of people able to live aboard, the  Power 80  will offer between five and seven double cabins with en suite facilities, depending on the version, with a choice of two  ultra-spacious owner’s cabins . Crew will also be well catered for, with one to three skipper’s cabins in the forepeaks and beneath the aft cockpit, depending on the version.

For Fountaine Pajot, the future Power 80 will be another important step in its drive to expand its range and take on the large catamaran yacht market. It makes a great opportunity to demonstrate the scope of the shipyard’s savoir-faire, with over 40 years’ experience in catamaran design.

Description.

Sunreef Yachts launched the world’s most advanced electric motor yacht , Sol, in its Gdansk facility in Poland . The luxury catamaran is customized to the owner’s specifications and uses the latest green tech to attain the highest levels of sustainability and energy efficiency.

Apart from being equipped with two 360kW engines and a set of 990kWh batteries, this electric catamaran boasts Sunreef Yachts’ revolutionary solar power system with panels fully integrated with the composite structures. Owing to this in-house engineered technology, the 80 Sunreef Power Eco provides unrivaled solar power for extended range and a clean cruising experience.

The solar catamaran was commissioned by an experienced family of yacht owners deeply engaged in sustainability and looking for the perfect eco-responsible motor yacht. The four-cabin catamaran boasts a custom-tailored layout and décor to accommodate eight guests in full luxury. With an energy-saving air conditioning system and smart energy management, this  electric yacht  sets new standards for  eco-cruising .

The Sunreef 80, the flagship of the Sunreef eco-friendly sailing catamarans, combines superyacht-like interior volume, intelligently designed living spaces, reliable sailing performance, as well as the latest in environmentally-friendly technology. With Sunreef's electric propulsion option and proprietary solar power system, luxury cruising has never been quieter or vibration-free.

The first Sunreef 80 launched, the 7X Split, is easily spotted from afar thanks to her graphite-colored hull that is striking in appearance. She sports a spacious 4-cabin layout, including a spectacular master stateroom, occupying most of the starboard hull along with the guest cabin. With a deliberately dim color scheme, the master suite features a massive bed, a desk, a sofa, and a dressing room hidden behind a custom-designed decorative partition. The salon is tremendous, offering stunning views, incredible space rarely ever seen on a yacht of this length, and the finest contemporary decor.

Thanks to Sunreef Yachts’ proprietary solar power system, the Sunreef 80 Eco can generate up to 32kWp. Covering a total area of 164m² solar panels can be integrated with various composite structures of the yacht including the mast, boom, superstructure and hull sides. The luxury catamaran is fitted with a state of the art, ultralight battery bank (30% lighter than the average batteries used in the nautical industry) with a density of less than 6kg / kWh for increased weight-efficiency and performance.

From the most experienced super catamaran builder in the world – the Sunreef 80′ catamaran will be considered a super-yacht on all levels. Aggressive and contemporary styling as well as superb build quality will make this deluxe catamaran a viable choice for sailors who are looking for a luxurious go-anywhere cruising yacht.

The Sunreef 80′ catamaran will be large and high enough to safely allow for a forward cockpit and she will feature a huge fly bridge for helming and socializing. Last month, Rafael Nadal received his fully custom Sunreef 80 Power and things appear to be going swimmingly. The Polish shipyard has released pictures of the 34-year-old tennis pro aboard the luxury catamaran and he’s smiling like he just won a grand slam. That’s because, in the marine world, he did. Great White represents an ace in high-end multihulls.

Nadal first commissioned the 80-footer back in July 2019. The ultra-modern cruiser was specially designed for the current World No. 2 and his wife Maria by the Sunreef team. The all-rounder combines five-star comfort with exceptional seaworthiness and has an epic interior fit for a tennis king.

The yacht’s sizeable living space spans just shy of 4,000 square feet and is one of the largest in class. It has been fully decked out with no expense spared to the exacting standards of keen yachting enthusiast Rafa. The centerpiece is a stunning master stateroom, which features a flip-down ceiling TV above the bed, a walk-in wardrobe, a plush sofa and a private fold-out balcony where the Spaniard can catch some rays. The craft can sleep up to eight guests in total across three roomy cabins and a starboard owner’s suite. Of course, there’s also room for crew.

Elsewhere, there’s a generous light-filled saloon complete with luxe contemporary furnishings, a dining space that seats eight people, and a lounge area with two 77-inch televisions installed back-to-back for obligatory tennis watching.

Outside, meanwhile, Great White has a full-beam alfresco dining space at the stern with its own weatherproof TV and a luxurious flybridge where guests can lounge about on big sun pads and enjoy a bar and yet another pop-up TV. She also sports a wide hydraulic swim platform that offers an extra sunbathing spot by the water, plus an aft garage that holds jet-skis, water toys and a requisite tender.

As to be expected, the cat’s exteriors are as equally impressive. Built in composite, Great White sports a sleek silhouette and clean lines for which Sunreef is renowned. She’s fitted with two 1,200 hp engines that help her run like a star athlete and give a top speed of 24 knots or cruise speed of 14 knots.

Fountaine Pajot unveiled its largest flagship, the New 80, in early September 2022. It was christened THIRA 80 at the Cannes International Yachting Festival in early September 2023 during its World Premiere.

Fountaine Pajot's architects, together with Berret Racoupeau Design, have worked to offer great spaces to both share friendly or spend cosy moments.

The Beach Club platform at the rear of the vessel creates a very large swimming and leasure area, between both transoms.  It is ideal for chilling or practicing watersports. Storing areas are located on the main deck for all your toys. A very large sunbed is located above the plaform, at the rear of the cockpit and oriented towards the back of the boat.

The cockpit sheds a very large table to welcome up to 10/12 guests, as well as various sofas and an staircase access to the flybridge. It also allows access to the VIP cabin or to one of the crew cabins.

Paris Hilton sparked backlash for posting a video of her 19-month-old son Phoenix on a catamaran without wearing a life jacket.

In the TikTok shared Wednesday, Hilton’s baby boy adorably crawled and walked around the boat in a cute burgundy outfit while being filmed by his famous mom.

However, critics in the comments section were more focused on the fact that Hilton didn’t put a life jacket on Phoenix.

“Momma, please have him wear a life jacket always on a boat!!” someone wrote. “Stuff happens. That’s why they’re called accidents.”

“My anxiety not seeing him in a life jacket!! Can never be too safe on the water!” another person wrote.

“Walking on the net over the open water terrified me,” a different fan said.

A fourth person wrote, “It makes me nervous. He needs a life jacket on. I worry so much about him.”

Another comment called Hilton’s video of Phoenix “crazy scary,” while someone else said their “heart palpitated” seeing the 1-year-old without a life jacket on.

Hilton eventually responded to the concerns in a comment on the video.

“Hey Mamma’s, thank you for the advice & always caring about my #CutesieCrew,” she wrote.

“It’s a big boat & my husband and I are following him around everywhere & watching like hawks,” Hilton continued. “My babies are my world.”

The famous socialite shares Phoenix with her husband, Carter Reum. They welcomed Phoenix via surrogate in January 2023.

The couple also share 9-month-old daughter London . She was born via surrogate in November 2023.

Hilton gushed over Phoenix while sharing the 1-minute-long boat video that was played to Ed Sheeran’s song “Photograph.”

“Watching Phoenix explore the world has been so special to me. I am so grateful to be a #SlivingMom,” Hilton’s caption read.

After Phoenix was born, Hilton had to speak out against haters who were making fun of the newborn’s head.

“There are some sick people in this world,” she commented on a video of her son in October 2023. “My angel is perfectly healthy.”

She added: “And yes, of course, he has been to a doctor, he just has a large brain.”

In a lengthier message on her Instagram Story, the “Simple Life” alum said that the comments about Phoenix were “unacceptable” but sadly “inevitable” being that she’s in the public eye.

“This hurts my heart more deeply than words can describe,” Hilton wrote.

While Hilton loves being a mom of two, she’s made it clear that she wouldn’t mind having another child — specifically another daughter.

“I would love a sister for London because my sister and I have such a close relationship,” Hilton told E! News in April, referring to her older sister Nicky Hilton, 40.

“I don’t know, I’m just enjoying them both so much right now. But that would be really amazing,” she added.

Nevada utility awarded over $80M to create new solar plant in Pahrump

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — A Southern Nevada utility has been awarded $80.3 million to build a new solar generating and storage plant in Pahrump.

Sens. Catherine Cortez Masto and Jacky Rosen, D-Nevada, announced in a joint statement that Valley Electric Association will receive the grant.

Funding from the U.S. Agriculture Department will go toward installing a 37-megawatt solar power generation and storage system serving Pahrump and the Fish Lake Valley Region.

"Nevada is one of the solar capitals of the world, and this investment will deliver clean, reliable energy to rural Nevadans while lowering costs and creating good-paying jobs," Cortez Masto said in a statement.

The funding comes from the USDA's Powering Affordable Clean Energy (PACE) program, which is funded in part by the Inflation Reduction Act.

What We Know About Kamala Harris’s $5 Trillion Tax Plan So Far

The vice president supports the tax increases proposed by the Biden White House, according to her campaign.

In a campaign otherwise light on policy specifics, Vice President Kamala Harris this week quietly rolled out her most detailed, far-ranging proposal yet: nearly $5 trillion in tax increases over a decade.

That’s how much more revenue the federal government would raise if it adopted a number of tax increases that President Biden proposed in the spring . Ms. Harris’s campaign said this week that she supported those tax hikes, which were thoroughly laid out in the most recent federal budget plan prepared by the Biden administration.

No one making less than $400,000 a year would see their taxes go up under the plan. Instead, Ms. Harris is seeking to significantly raise taxes on the wealthiest Americans and large corporations. Congress has previously rejected many of these tax ideas, even when Democrats controlled both chambers.

While tax policy is right now a subplot in a turbulent presidential campaign, it will be a primary policy issue in Washington next year. The next president will have to work with Congress to address the tax cuts Donald J. Trump signed into law in 2017. Many of those tax cuts expire after 2025, meaning millions of Americans will see their taxes go up if lawmakers don’t reach a deal next year.

Here’s an overview of what we now know — and still don’t know — about the Democratic nominee’s views on taxes.

Higher taxes on corporations

The most recent White House budget includes several proposals that would raise taxes on large corporations . Chief among them is raising the corporate tax rate to 28 percent from 21 percent, a step that the Treasury Department estimated could bring in $1.3 trillion in revenue over the next 10 years.

Because the vice president supports the Biden budget’s tax hikes, Ms. Harris has also endorsed raising a tax on stock buybacks to 4 percent from 1 percent. Democrats first approved the stock buyback tax in 2022 as part of the Inflation Reduction Act. The legislation also requires big companies to pay taxes worth at least 15 percent of the income they report to investors. The goal of the new minimum tax is to curb companies’ ability to use deductions and tax credits to shrink their tax liability to as low as zero. Mr. Biden’s budget — and now Ms. Harris’s presidential campaign — calls for increasing that minimum tax to 21 percent from 15 percent.

In his budget, Mr. Biden also put out an overhaul of how multinational companies’ foreign earnings are taxed in the United States. The goal is to bring the United States into compliance with an international agreement that aims to stop companies moving into low-tax jurisdictions to avoid paying taxes. Mr. Biden’s budget calls for increasing and reorganizing a global minimum tax. Under the plan, the tax would be assessed on income in each individual country where the company operates, rather than on its global profits overall. The rate would double to 21 percent from 10.5 percent.

The budget Ms. Harris has now adopted also disallows companies from deducting the compensation of all employees making more than $1 million.

High-earning Americans would pay more

The White House tax plan would raise taxes on high-income Americans through two avenues: First, by increasing the rate they pay on existing income taxes, and second, by more broadly reshaping the taxation of investment gains for the wealthiest taxpayers.

Ms. Harris would set the top marginal income rate at 39.6 percent, up from 37 percent. On top of that, she would also increase the rate on two parallel Medicare surtaxes to 5 percent from 3.8 percent for Americans making more than $400,000 and expand the income subject to one of them. Together, the Medicare and income proposals would create a top marginal rate as high as 44.6 percent.

Wealthy Americans would see more fundamental changes in how gains on investments in stocks, bonds, real estate and other assets are taxed. For Americans making more than $1 million a year, investment earnings would be taxed at the same rate as regular income, instead of at the lower rates for capital gains.

The White House tax plan targets what some Democrats see as a gaping loophole in the tax code: the so-called step-up in basis. Under the current law, Americans owe capital-gains taxes when an asset is sold, but not if they pass those assets on to someone else at the time of their death. That means someone who inherits assets from a deceased parent, for example, does not have to pay taxes on how much those assets appreciated since they were purchased. Instead, the person who inherits the assets has to pay taxes on the gains only from the time they were inherited — and only once they are sold.

Ms. Harris has endorsed a plan to tax the gains on those assets at the original owner’s death, though several exemptions would apply, including when a surviving spouse inherits the assets.

The tax plan would also try to tax the wealthiest Americans’ investment gains before they sell the assets or die. People with more than $100 million in wealth would have to pay at least 25 percent on a combination of their income and their unrealized capital gains — the value of the appreciation in the stocks, bonds, real estate and other assets that they own but haven’t sold. The so-called billionaires-minimum tax could create hefty tax bills for people like Elon Musk who derive much of their wealth from stock they own.

Questions still loom

Ms. Harris’s commitment to the White House budget clarifies much about how she hopes to raise revenue if she wins the election in November. But even the thick White House budget leaves several key tax questions unaddressed, including how exactly Democrats should approach the expiration of key provisions in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act next year.

The expiring measures included a broader standard deduction, lower marginal income rates for many Americans, and a generous deduction for owners of many closely-held businesses. The White House tax plan states that Americans making less than $400,000 should not see tax increases in a deal. That means that Ms. Harris wants to extend much of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, her Republican rival’s signature legislative accomplishment.

Extending the tax cuts for Americans making less than $400,000 could take up much of the roughly $4 trillion cost for continuing all of the lapsing provisions.

Ms. Harris’s campaign has said she would seek to reduce the deficit. But other proposed tax cuts are piling up. On the campaign trail, Ms. Harris has rolled out spending plans and several tax cuts, including a more generous child tax credit, that the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget estimates could cost roughly $2 trillion over a decade.

This week, Senator Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat and the majority leader, called for the restoration of a huge tax break: the state and local tax deduction. That deduction is currently capped at $10,000, but the limit expires after next year. Fully restoring the ability of Americans to deduct their state and local taxes from their federal bills could cost roughly $1 trillion over a decade.

So the $5 trillion in tax increases embraced by Ms. Harris this week may not ultimately be enough to cover the cost of her and other Democrats’ ambitions next year.

Justice Department Sues RealPage for Algorithmic Pricing Scheme that Harms Millions of American Renters

The Justice Department, together with the Attorneys General of North Carolina, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Minnesota, Oregon, Tennessee, and Washington, filed a civil antitrust lawsuit today against RealPage Inc. for its unlawful scheme to decrease competition among landlords in apartment pricing and to monopolize the market for commercial revenue management software that landlords use to price apartments. RealPage’s alleged conduct deprives renters of the benefits of competition on apartment leasing terms and harms millions of Americans. The lawsuit was filed today in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina and alleges that RealPage violated Sections 1 and 2 of the Sherman Act.

The complaint  alleges that RealPage contracts with competing landlords who agree to share with RealPage nonpublic, competitively sensitive information about their apartment rental rates and other lease terms to train and run RealPage’s algorithmic pricing software. This software then generates recommendations, including on apartment rental pricing and other terms, for participating landlords based on their and their rivals’ competitively sensitive information. The complaint further alleges that in a free market, these landlords would otherwise be competing independently to attract renters based on pricing, discounts, concessions, lease terms, and other dimensions of apartment leasing. RealPage also uses this scheme and its substantial data trove to maintain a monopoly in the market for commercial revenue management software. The complaint seeks to end RealPage’s illegal conduct and restore competition for the benefit of renters in states across the country.

“Americans should not have to pay more in rent because a company has found a new way to scheme with landlords to break the law,” said Attorney General Merrick B. Garland. “We allege that RealPage’s pricing algorithm enables landlords to share confidential, competitively sensitive information and align their rents. Using software as the sharing mechanism does not immunize this scheme from Sherman Act liability, and the Justice Department will continue to aggressively enforce the antitrust laws and protect the American people from those who violate them.”

“Today’s complaint against RealPage illustrates our corporate enforcement strategy in action. We identify the most serious wrongdoers, whether individuals or companies, and focus our full energy on holding them accountable,” said Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco. “By feeding sensitive data into a sophisticated algorithm powered by artificial intelligence, RealPage has found a modern way to violate a century-old law through systematic coordination of rental housing prices — undermining competition and fairness for consumers in the process. Training a machine to break the law is still breaking the law. Today’s action makes clear that we will use all our legal tools to ensure accountability for technology-fueled anticompetitive conduct.” 

“RealPage’s egregious, anticompetitive conduct allows landlords to undermine fair pricing and limit housing options while stifling necessary competition,” said Acting Associate Attorney General Benjamin C. Mizer. “The Department remains committed to rooting out illegal schemes and practices aimed at empowering corporate interests at the expense of consumers.” 

“As Americans struggle to afford housing, RealPage is making it easier for landlords to coordinate to increase rents,” said Assistant Attorney General Jonathan Kanter of the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division. “Today, we filed an antitrust suit against RealPage to make housing more affordable for millions of people across the country. Competition – not RealPage – should determine what Americans pay to rent their homes.”

The complaint cites internal documents and sworn testimony from RealPage and commercial landlords that make plain RealPage’s and landlords’ objective to maximize rental pricing and profitability at the expense of renters. For example:

• RealPage acknowledged that its software is aimed at maximizing prices for landlords, referring to its products as “driving every possible opportunity to increase price,” “avoid[ing] the race to the bottom in down markets,” and “a rising tide raises all ships.”
• A RealPage executive observed that its products help landlords avoid competing on the merits, noting that “there is greater good in everybody succeeding versus essentially trying to compete against one another in a way that actually keeps the entire industry down.”
• A RealPage executive explained to a landlord that using competitor data can help identify situations where the landlord “may have a $50 increase instead of a $10 increase for the day.”
• Another landlord commented about RealPage’s product, “I always liked this product because your algorithm uses proprietary data from other subscribers to suggest rents and term. That’s classic price fixing…”

The complaint alleges that RealPage’s agreements and conduct harm the competitive process in local rental markets for multi-family dwellings across the United States. Armed with competing landlords’ data, RealPage also encourages loyalty to the algorithm’s recommendations through, among other measures, “auto accept” functionality and pricing advisors who monitor landlords’ compliance. As a result, RealPage’s software tends to maximize price increases, minimize price decreases, and maximize landlords’ pricing power. RealPage also trained landlords to limit concessions (e.g., free month(s) of rent) and other discounts to renters. The complaint also cites internal documents from RealPage and landlords touting the fact that landlords have responded by reducing renter concessions.

The complaint separately alleges that RealPage has unlawfully maintained its monopoly over commercial revenue management software for multi-family dwellings in the United States, in which RealPage commands approximately 80% market share. Landlords agree to share their competitively sensitive data with RealPage in return for pricing recommendations and decisions that are the result of combining and analyzing competitors’ sensitive data. This creates a self-reinforcing feedback loop that strengthens RealPage’s grip on the market and makes it harder for honest businesses to compete on the merits.

Boat Description

The 80 Sunreef Power Eco is the avant-garde of eco-responsible motor-yachts. Powered by 4 electric motors with up to 720 KW of power with a top speed of 15kts.  Power can be provided by up to 1 Megawatt of proprietary chemistry battery bank that charges quickly in a couple hours and has a lifespan of 15 years.  Power is provided by the solar skin, shore power or generator as needed.   On anchor without any charging source all the house systems can operate silently for up to 4.5 days. 

This is fully-customizable luxury catamaran can be configured for personal or charter layouts, and galley up or down.   It utalizes the latest innovations in the industry to achieve outstanding energy efficiency. Thanks to Sunreef Yachts’ light and ultramodern solar power system producing up to 34 KW of power per day light hour, the 80 Sunreef Power maximizes solar energy generation capacity.

The electric catamaran is fitted with a state of the art, ultralight battery bank (30% lighter than the average batteries used in the nautical industry) with a density of less than 5.2kg / kWh for increased weight-efficiency and performance.

The fully-electric 80 Sunreef Power provides for silent cruising and long range with electric motors powered from the dedicated battery bank. 

Green features on board include a high voltage DC-powered air conditioning system, a water-making and purifying system to generate drinking water, a non-toxic bottom paint. A fully customizable luxury craft, the 80 Sunreef Power electric catamaran offers infinite décor possibilities and access to a broad selection of ethically-sourced and eco-responsible finishing materials.
