Megan and Cieara, with a combined 12 years of experience working on superyachts, co-founded Super Yachting Nautical Careers (SYNC) in Cape Town in 2018. Having swiftly ascended through the ranks and served as Chief Stewardesses aboard numerous superyachts alongside high-profile guests and celebrities, they possess invaluable insights into what it truly means to excel as a Superyacht Stew.

While Megan has since transitioned back to the boats, where she thrives as an exceptional Chief Stewardess, her legacy remains integral to SYNC’s ethos. Cieara now spearheads the company alongside the Superwoman Olga, while the Superyacht stew course is expertly led by rotational Chief Stews, notably Cassidy Malherbe, our primary Chief Stew who brings a wealth of experience onboard and is an exceptional teacher.

At SYNC, we lead with our hearts, prioritizing genuine care and support for individuals—particularly women—seeking to enter the industry in a conscious and confident manner. Our mission is rooted in empowering others, sisterhood, connection and support, ensuring they feel equipped and empowered to embrace their roles and thrive in the dynamic world of yachting.

Cieara joined the Superyacht industry at age 20. With a passion for travel, the ocean, sailing, nutrition, health and adventure, Cieara didn’t hesitate to jump on board the Superyacht industry. Her service and culinary background made it easy for her to move between departments working on beautiful motor and sailing yachts around the world.

Her enthusiastic, friendly and hard-working nature helped her quickly climb the ropes to Head of Service, Chief Stewardess and later as Chef on pristine and luxury yachts where she became a valuable and versatile crew member.

With a drive to become a well rounded crew member, and motivated to grow and explore, Cieara has worked for 8+ years on both Motor and Sail yachts ranging from 30 – 110 meters.

Having recently returned home to Cape Town, she is excited to share her vast knowledge of the industry with aspiring stewardesses and help them to launch their careers with confidence, clarity and skill.

After graduating with a degree in Psychology and English, Megan knew that she had to follow her life-long dream of venturing overseas to explore the world. Being a lover of people, travel and adventure, when she heard about the superyacht industry she knew it was the perfect job. Megan received her first Junior Stewardess job on board a heavy charter boat. Working for high profile guests, with busy turnaround times, laid the groundwork in her training and helped her quickly move up the ranks to Second Stewardess on a 62m yacht and then to Chief Stewardess on a 67m yacht.

Megan’s passion for the ocean has lured her back onto the yachts. Right now, she could be sipping Sangria in the South of Spain or swimming with whale sharks in the Sea of Cortez.

We are pleased to offer the courses needed to take you from novice to experienced crew in a timeline that suits your needs and budget. All the qualifications in the world will not help if you are not hard working, professional, clean, smart, with impeccable manners and have a full understanding of the industry.

Peter Daly is the Principle of Sail and Power SA. He has been boating for over 30 years, the last 10 in South Africa. As well as being a Yachtmaster Instructor he is also the only Powerboat and PWC Trainer in Africa. This means most of the instructors working in South Africa has been trained or Moderated by Pete.

It is vital to understand the role and responsibilities of a super yacht entry level crew member when investing in training qualifications.

The responsibilities of newbie Deckhands are limited, due to the lack of yachting experience, they will have when starting out in the industry. These vessels are worth millions of Dollars and as a result, the new Deckhand’s role onboard is limited to cleaning, polishing, maintenance and duties such as tender driving, anchoring, line handling – until he has proven himself as trustworthy, responsible and showing initiative.

The same can said for the Stewardess joining a vessel for the first time. Having silver service employment in 4 or 5 star hotels will help a lot. Bar work at the local Pub may not.

Diversity in qualification not only opens additional avenues for employment but will set you apart from the other crew and get your CV noticed within a pile of newbie job applications.

We have looked at the market and come up with a range of courses that cover the needs of the newbie on a gap year or two, to the career-minded individual looking for a long-term future in the Superyacht Industry.

Our courses are not set in stone you can pick and choose your elements, take a few weeks to complete them or a year or two it up to you. We want you to succeed and enjoy your training.

Superyacht Training

All journeys to a superyacht career start with STCW. It is a compulsory requirement for any crew who want to work at sea on all commercial vessels, including cruise ships, ferries and Superyachts.

STCW stands for Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW)and was introduces as Governments around the world formally agreed to standardise training around the world. The STCW was introduced in 1978, amended in 1995 (which is why sometimes you see old documents referring to STCW’95) and again in 2010.

STCW Basic Training Course

The STCW Basic Training Course runs every week and the minimum legal requirement for all crew working commercially at sea. Our courses are accredited by SAMSA (South African Maritime Safety Authority) and recognised by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and are valid for a period of 5 years.

The Basic Safety Training Courses include:

• Fire Fighting an Fire Prevention
• Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR)
• Personal Sea Survival (PST)
• Elementary First Aid

The modules that are required differ slightly between cruise ships, Superyachts and offshore.

To work on a Superyacht, the course takes 11 days to complete and is made-up of the basic modules, plus PDSD:

• Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (PDSD)

To work on a Cruise Ships, the course can take between 9 to 11 days to complete and is made-up of the basic modules, plus some additional training depending on your department:

• Crowd Management & Passenger Safety (CMPS)
• Crisis Management And Human Behaviour (CMHB)
• Proficiency in Security Awareness (PSA)
