Lloyd Stevenson Boatbuilders launches 24m expedition ketch Wind Spirit

Auckland-based shipyard Lloyd Stevenson Boatbuilders has launched a 23.9-metre sailing yacht described as an "expedition ketch". Named Wind Spirit , the yacht was built for an experienced sailor looking for "a long-distance sailing ketch for exploring remote places and high latitudes, with decent performance and great safety." 

The yacht hit the water before Christmas 2022 at Half Moon Bay marina, around ten kilometres away from the yard's main construction site. She will have her home berth in Brest in France, but her owner has planned an ambitious global itinerary that includes some of the world's most untouched regions. All the key infrastructure is electrically powered and much of the electrical generation for the vessel is supplied by solar panels and a pair of hydro generators that charge a lithium-ion battery bank.

Wind Spirit has been built in cold-moulded yellow cedar with an outer shell of e-glass and Kevlar. The wood construction takes advantage of Lloyd Stevenson Boatbuilder's considerable expertise in timber boatbuilding and the sustainably-sourced wood is diagonally planked and forms six layers. 

She has watertight bulkheads, a one-metre-long sacrificial bow and twin helms. The masts are deck-stepped and built in carbon, alongside carbon booms and all-carbon standing rigging. Wind Spirit is fractional-rigged ketch with an upwind sail area of 283 square metres and a downwind sail area of 442 square metres.

Accommodation comprises two double berths and two twin berths with two heads. In keeping with her rugged explorer spirit, she has no owner's cabin. Forward of the accommodation is a saloon and galley area, which includes a port side reading snug. 

The yacht's interior has been finished in natural Anigre wood panels and there are a number of personal touches on board Wind Spirit , including a half-model that was gifted to the owner by a recently qualified apprentice.

 “Our chaps were in their element – it was obviously a challenging project because of the detail and level of accuracy required,” said Lloyd Stevenson Boatbuilders’ project manager Peter Brooking. “But they rose to the task and enjoyed it immensely.” 

Speaking about using Lloyd Stevenson Boatbuilder, designer and owner’s representative Arnaud de Marignac explained:  “We investigated numerous boatyards around the world – mainly in Europe but also in the U.S.” They paid a visit to Auckland and "liked what [they] saw', making it the "obvious choice".

“She quickly proved her credentials during commissioning," de Marignac continued. "In a 20-plus-knot wind on the Hauraki Gulf, we cruised upwind at a little over 10 knots. I did not really expect that from a 50-tonne boat.”

Wind Spirit, the 23.9m (78.4ft) expedition ketch we launched in 2022, departed Auckland,

New Zealand, just before Christmas 2023, bound for Brest, France, over 20,000 nautical

miles away. 

For the intrepid captain and his first mate, the adventure began with setting a course of 100 degrees true, the next port of call would be Horta in the Azores, almost 11,900 nautical miles away.

The first objectives, however, were navigating the Southern Ocean and then the incredible achievement of rounding Cape Horn... two-handed…. Here are a few pictures; there is more to the story on our Facebook page; see the link below.

"Build me a long-distance sailing ketch for exploring remote places and high latitudes, with decent performance and great safety, for a live-aboard owner sailing mostly short - or single-handed."

This is the brief given to Lloyd Stevenson Boatbuilders by our international client. 

Wind Spirit is a fractional rigged ketch constructed of six layers of cold moulded, longitudinal and diagonal planked yellow cedar, with an outer skin of e-glass and Kevlar. With deck-stepped carbon masts, all carbon standing rigging, twin helms and a hull that is an engineering masterpiece that takes advantage of both Lloyd Stevenson Boatbuilders' traditional wood construction experience and their composite expertise. 

Launched just before Christmas 2022, Wind Spirit will be exploring some of the world's most pristine environments, so she is self-supporting and leaves the smallest footprint possible. This is achieved by having all the key infrastructure electrically powered. From the rubber dinghy's electric outboard motor, the water maker, dive compressor and retractable bow & stern thrusters to the oven/induction hob, fridge, freezer, washing machine and dryer.

Much of the electrical generation for the vessel is supplied by solar panels and a pair of hydro generators, charging a lithium-ion battery bank – no genset required. All this hi-tech infrastructure is seamlessly integrated using a CZone system managed by high-performance B&G touch screens.

The general approach for sail handling on Wind Spirit is of traditional sailing skills, where physical exertion is the preference to pushing buttons, as is consistent with the owner's racing pedigree. To this end, very nearly every primary sailing control line has its own dedicated winch, as opposed to the more conventional, a few winches and multiple rope clutches. The sails are hanked on and non-furling; this again is the owner's preference, as furling sails "…are binary. They are either in or out…. Also, Murphy's Law says they will jam at the worst possible time, in the middle of the night with the wind howling on a lee shore, the engine out of commission. Thanks, but no thanks…"

The brief also stipulated that the owner prefers sporty over luxury. Of course, Lloyd Stevenson Boatbuilders' interpretation of sporty is probably not what most people would expect. With a stunning interior made from naturally finished Anegre wood panels, incorporating a 2mm negative detail and finished to LSB's usual, very high standards, you could easily describe her as luxuriously sporty.

Wind Spirit's home port is Brest, France. So how did Lloyd Stevenson Boatbuilders become the builder of choice? According to Arnaud, it was no choice at all. "I investigated numerous boatyards around the world – mainly in Europe but also in the U.S." He finally discovered Lloyd Stevenson Boatbuilders and decided to drop in for a visit. "I liked what I saw – the people and the culture – but especially the depth of the company's timber and composite construction expertise. The choice was obvious…"

The 1988-built Wind Spirit cruise ship is the second of the three Windstar sailing yachts - together with Wind Surf and Wind Star (sistership). The three 4-masted yachts are uniquely designed for tall sailing ship cruises.

The vessel (IMO number 8603509) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 309056000) and registered in Nassau .

History - construction and ownership

Windstar Cruises is a luxury brand operating a fleet of smaller-sized ships (mega-yachts) with capacity up to 310 passengers. The company call at 150 ports throughout the Caribbean, Central America, South Pacific, Asia, Europe. Currently, Windstar is a subsidiary of Xanterra Parks and Resorts (USA's largest national and state park concession management company).

The 160-passenger ship Wind Spirit is trendy and sophisticated, with large white sails on top deck. The sails are computerized and not really necessary for navigating (although in some conditions they are ideal, the engines are cut and the vessel is completely wind-driven), but travelers do not really care when the effect is exquisite.

Decks and Cabins

Wind Spirit staterooms (74 total, in 5 grades) include one Oceanview Owner’s Suite and 73x Oceanview Deluxe cabins. All staterooms are with modern amenities including fully-stocked minibars, Wi-Fi Internet, smart HDTVs (infotainment system), spacious wardrobe (with electronic safe box), phone (direct dial), large bathroom (single-sink granite countertop vanity, WC-toilet, L'Occitane bath products, rain showerheads, luxury towels), premium bedding sets (top-quality pillows and Egyptian cotton linens), fresh fruits and flowers.

The boat has 5 decks , all of which are passenger-accessible and 2 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

During the last refurbishment, Wind Spirit Restaurant was renamed to AmphorA and redesigned, a new menu was provided. Pool Bar was renewed to create alfresco additional seating for Candles Grill sunset dining, with new deck furniture and awning. The reception area was also updated. The Lounge got a brand new AV system and hardwood flooring. 

Wind Spirit ship has two primary dining venues, both open seating: the AmphorA Restaurant in the evenings which offers course-by-course gourmet cuisine and Veranda restaurant with casual full-service and buffet dining (breakfast and lunch). A reservation is needed for Candles if you choose to dine under the stars. The ship combines the highest food and service levels with casual attire and single open seating.

• AmphorA Restaurant (ship’s dining room, open-seating; offers 5-course gourmet dinner menu which is changed daily; along with onboard-made bread, in all ports of call the executive chef goes to the local markets to shop for fresh ingredients)
• Candles Cafe & Veranda (a smaller “dining room” which offers buffet-style breakfast and lunch, as well as a la carte menu through the wait staff; its indoor area is called “Candles Cafe” and features floor-ceiling panoramic windows; the outdoor seating area is called “Veranda” - in the evenings, it transforms into “Candles Grill” al-fresco steakhouse).

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

What wasn't changed during the last refurbishment of Wind Spirit, however, was Windstar Cruises onboard experience. The line has stuck to the core concept: small-ship features and low passenger occupancy balance, with high ratios guest-to-crew and personalized service. Alcoholic beverages and excursions are charged additionally, though soft drinks and water are included. Wind Spirit onboard atmosphere is the right mix of laid-back and upscale.

• The Marina (retractable water sports platform for water skiing, windsurfing, snorkelling, kayaking; the ship provides a banana boat, waterski boat, sea kayaks, Sunfish sailboats, wakeboards, boards for windsurfing, paddleboards, scuba diving and snorkelling equipment, plus four Zodiacs; the steel cage forms a swimming pool in the sea)
• Lounge (ship’s theatre/main show lounge for live evening entertainment); Library
• The Signature Shop/Boutique Shop (sells duty-free luxury fashion clothing and accessories)
• The Casino (with blackjack/roulette gambling tables, slot machines)
• WindSpa (operated by Steiner; has a treatment room, Sauna and Beauty Salon. “Spa Under the Stars” program offers spa treatments out on the deck)
• The Fitness Center (with free weights, exercycles and treadmills; offers complimentary exercise classes)
• Pool Area (with one swimming pool, a waterfall cascading from the whirlpool, sunbathing area served by the Pool Bar)
• The Flying Bridge deck is designed to resemble the traditional navigation point.

The 4-masted megayacht Wind Spirit is a sailing ship with 2 sisterships - Wind Star, and Wind Song. Wind Song experienced an engine room fire in 2002 and was scuttled. These are tall-sailing cruise ships with modern design and 6 sails mounted on 4 masts. The sails are handled via a sophisticated computer-controled system.

The yacht's design is based on smaller 5350-ton motor sailing yachts constructed by the French shipbuilding company "Societe Nouvelle des Ateliers et Chantiers du Havre". Among those are the Windstar sail ships Wind Surf and Wind Star and also Club Med 2 .

In 2012, Windstar Cruises completed an extensive (18-month long) drydock refurbishment project for renovations of company's all three sail yachts - Wind Spirit,  Wind Star and Wind Surf . Works included overhauls of all passenger staterooms, dining venues, public spaces, as well as new sails.

For season 2020-2021 (February through December), Windstar scheduled new South Pacific itineraries on Wind Spirit. The ship had planned 14 itineraries (total 23 departures) visiting call ports in Fiji, Tonga, New Caledonia, Cook Islands, Tuamotus , Niue .
