Built in 1961 by J.A. Silver in Rosneath, Scotland, and designed by John Bain, she is part of the Ormidale class. After an impeccable four-year restoration by Gardner Marine completed in 2023, SILVER LASS has been transformed with modern technology, a solid teak interior and rebuilt Gardner 6LW engines with new ZF hydraulic gearboxes. Her hull is cladded with full copper sheathing under the waterline, showcasing her superior quality. Having cruised the Mediterranean, the Black Sea and the River Danube, SILVER LASS is back in the Med. Her superior amenities and robust build make her perfectly suited for all sorts of cruising grounds, including New England and all other waters of the US.

Her interior features solid reclaimed Burmese teak woodwork throughout, complemented by luxurious fittings and fabrics from Ralph Lauren, Waterworks, Lora Piana, Porto Romana, and Johanna Howard. The main salon and dining area boast a TV with an electric lift and a convertible coffee table that seats eight when lifted. LED ambient lighting and solid teak doors enhance her sophisticated ambiance. Modern upgrades include full air conditioning and heating systems, large battery capacity for silent use, hydraulic stabilization, and state-of-the-art navigational and steering systems.

SILVER LASS welcomes up to eight guests in four beautiful cabins. The full-beam owner’s suite features white-painted teak side walls, teak cabinetry, bronze lighting, multiple portholes for natural light and an en-suite bathroom with elegant finishes. Two additional guest cabins, including a VIP double with storage and a guest bunk cabin, share the same refined styling. A spacious twin cabin in the bow, with its own en-suite, can serve as either a crew or guest cabin. All cabins are equipped with individually thermostatically controllable air handlers, USB sockets, Carrera marble tops, unique handmade mirrors, reading lights and ample luggage storage.

The aft deck is the focal point of SILVER LASS’s alfresco space, boasting newly installed teak decks with epoxy-sheathed sub decks and a custom-made table crafted from reclaimed Burmese teak that seats eight. On the port side, you’ll find a handmade swim ladder, while the starboard side provides easy access for tenders and features a boarding ladder. The original classic davits are still in place, ensuring the safe launch and storage of the 3m tender. The forward wheelhouse offers a covered seating area with a concealed deck fridge and is equipped with top-of-the-line Sonance all-weather speakers for exceptional music quality. An awning with lighting can be added for shade, and Sunbrella covers protect all deck furniture and hatches when not in use.

The covered wheelhouse, fitted with brand-new Simrad navigational equipment, serves as the central control point. The foredeck, adorned with classic teak hatches, provides ample space for relaxation, with sunbeds on the coach roof offering the ideal spot to bask in the sun.

Built in 1961 by J. A Silver Ltd, Rosneath, Scotland and impeccably restored by Gardner Marine in 2023, Silver Lass is a classic Gentleman’s Motor Yacht of the highest quality.

Part of the Ormidale class of vessels designed by John Bain, SILVER LASS is one of the few that was originally built for Mediterranean use. Under the same owner from 1969 – 2008, she extensively cruised throughout the Mediterranean, West and East and then into the Black Sea and up the River Danube.

The vessel was restored in house by Gardner Marine over a period of 4 years to bring this vessel back to perfect condition. In the heart of the vessel are two fully restored and completely original Gardner 6LW engines, close coupled to new ZF hydraulic gearboxes. A host of modern upgrades have been installed in the background of the vessel including full air conditioning and heating systems, large battery capacity for long periods of silent use, hydraulic stabilisation, and all new navigational and steering systems.

True to the period with solid teak interior, SILVER LASS has been cleverly rebuilt with modern technology sympathetically installed to provide the utmost comfort and luxury. She returned back to the Mediterranean in 2023 where she had spent so much time all those years ago, now in search for her new owners.

Bayesian yacht captain faces manslaughter probe after deadly sinking in Sicily

PORTICELLE, Italy -- The captain of the luxury Bayesian yacht that sank near Porticello, off the coast of Sicily, last week will face an investigation into multiple counts of manslaughter and negligent shipwreck, the Italian prosecutor's office announced Monday.

James Cutfield, 51, was the head of crew aboard the 56-meter (184-foot) sailing boat when it capsized in the throes of a ferocious storm last Monday, killing six passengers, including British tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah. The yacht's chef Recaldo Thomas also likely died in the wreck.

The other victims were Morgan Stanley International director Jonathan Bloomer, prominent American lawyer Chris Morvillo, and both of their wives - Judy Bloomer and Neda Morvillo. Chris Morvillo, a partner at Clifford Chance, was involved in successfully defeating the US fraud case against Lynch in June.

Cutfield and 14 other people survived the sinking, including Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares.

A weather phenomenon known as a waterspout - one of several types of tornadoes - is thought to have capsized the yacht. But Italian authorities are investigating whether the crew's actions and their handling of the boat contributed to the deadly sinking.

New-Zealand born Cutfield is not in custody, according to Italian prosecutors, but he cannot leave the country while the investigation is ongoing.

Those killed were likely asleep at the time of the storm, a prosecutor said at the weekend, which is why they were unable to escape. On Saturday, the prosecutor and head of the fire brigade recovery team both said five bodies were found in the same room of the ship, which may have meant they were searching for an air pocket while the ship sank.

Investigators warned that the circumstances of the sinking remain largely unclear, including whether there was a black box onboard the ship, and if some of the ship's hatches were left ajar - which would explain why it sank so rapidly.

Salvage crews are expected to raise the Bayesian - named after the statistical theory on which Lynch made his fortune - in the coming weeks. Under Italian law, the cost of raising and salvaging the ship falls on the ship's owner.

As Bacares' company owns the vessel, they must find a salvage company and raise the ship, which is then handed to Italian authorities as part of the investigation, the main prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio said on Saturday.

After the yacht is raised, investigators will determine if the hatches were open during the storm, Cartosio added.

Italian prosecutors will also investigate whether the ship's chief mate was on the bridge when the ship sunk, and if anyone tried to warn the passengers of imminent danger.

Captain of Bayesian superyacht investigated for 'manslaughter and shipwreck' after Sicily tragedy

The captain of the Bayesian superyacht which sank off the coast of Sicily last week is being investigated for manslaughter and shipwreck, according to reports.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his daughter were among seven people who died when the ship sank during a tornado near Porticello in the early hours of August 19.

Captain James Cutfield, a 51-year-old New Zealand national, is being investigated for manslaughter and shipwreck, Italian newspapers La Repubblica and Corriere della Sera said.

Being placed under investigation in Italy does not imply guilt and does not mean formal charges will necessarily follow.

The head of the public prosecutor’s office of Termini Imerese, Ambrogio Cartosio, said on Saturday that it was plausible that crimes of multiple manslaughter and causing a shipwreck through negligence had been committed.

Magistrates questioned Mr Cutfield for more than two hours on Sunday, La Repubblica reported.

The newspaper claimed that prosecutors may also investigate a crew member who was on duty when the storm hit and survived the incident.

Under maritime law, a captain has full responsibility for the ship and the crew, as well as the safety of all aboard.

Mr Cutfield and his eight surviving crew members have not publicly commented on the investigation.

Last week, Mr Cutfield told Italian media that he “did not see” the storm coming.

On Saturday, maritime director of western Sicily Rear Admiral Raffaele Macauda said the weather at the time of the yacht’s sinking was abnormal and there was nothing to suggest such an extreme situation would arise.

The 184-ft long superyacht was carrying 22 people when it capsized and sunk last Monday just minutes after being hit by a pre-dawn storm.

Fifteen people survived the incident, including Mr Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares.

Franco Romani, a nautical architect that was part of the team that designed the boat, told La Stampa that the Bayesian was “built to go to sea in any weather”.

Giovanni Costantino, founder and chief executive of The Italian Sea Group, has described the Bayesian as “one of the safest boats in the world” and denied suggestions that the boat’s construction was at fault.

Mr Lynch, who founded software giant Autonomy in 1996, was cleared in June of carrying out a massive fraud relating to its £8.64 billion sale to US company Hewlett Packard. The boat trip was a celebration of his acquittal.

Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy Bloomer, Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo, and his wife Neda Morvillo were also lost when the Bayesian sank.

Italy opens investigation into captain in deadly yacht sinking, lawyer says

James Cutfield, a veteran sailor from New Zealand, is being investigated after the Bayesian capsized, killing seven, including tech guru Mike Lynch.

Italian prosecutors are investigating James Cutfield, the captain of a superyacht that sank off the coast of Sicily last week in a storm , according to a lawyer representing him.

The accident killed seven of the 22 people on board, including British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch .

Cutfield’s attorney, Aldo Mordiglia, said by email that the captain is under investigation for manslaughter and will be interviewed by public prosecutors later on Tuesday.

Italian media reports have also said that the 51-year-old New Zealander will be questioned by prosecutors as part of a probe into how the ship sank within minutes of being hit by a storm on Aug. 19, and whether any errors were made.

Cutfield is “very affected” by the whole affair, another of his lawyers Giovanni Rizzuti told Italian media , and plans to defend himself against any charges.

News that the focus of the investigation has turned to Cutfield was first reported by La Repubblica newspaper. Italian prosecutors said Saturday that they had opened an investigation into possible culpable shipwreck and manslaughter, but no suspects were named at that time.

Registering suspects is a requirement before autopsies can be carried out on the victims, Italian news agency ANSA reported .

In Italy, being placed under investigation doesn’t necessarily mean that charges will follow. Under maritime law, the captain is responsible for the ship, its crew and any passengers on board.

Other crew members were interviewed on Monday.

The British-flagged Bayesian capsized after being caught in what authorities called a “violent storm” in the early hours of Aug. 19. The 183-foot yacht sank to a depth of more than 160 feet. The bodies of Lynch and five other victims, including his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, were found days later inside the sunken yacht. The body of the yacht’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, was recovered during initial search efforts.

Other boats in the area during the storm were unscathed, leading the yacht’s designers to speculate that a hatch could have been left open, allowing water to enter the yacht.

“The Bayesian was built to go to sea in any weather,” Franco Romani, one of the Bayesian’s architects, told La Stampa newspaper on Monday.

Cutfield’s brother, Mark Cutfield, told the New Zealand Herald last week that his brother is “a very good sailor” who has spent much of his life working on boats in the Mediterranean after sailing competitively in his youth.

The captain of the Bayesian is facing further questioning from prosecutors on Tuesday after he was placed under investigation for possible manslaughter and shipwreck, according to his lawyer.

New Zealander James Cutfield is being investigated after the superyacht sank in a storm off the coast of Sicily last Monday, his lawyer Aldo Mordiglia confirmed on Monday.

Magistrates spoke to Mr Cutfield on Sunday for the second time in a week, the Italian daily la Repubblica reported, questioning him for more than two hours.

Mr Mordiglia said his 51-year-old client faced further questioning from prosecutors on Tuesday.

Being placed under investigation in Italy does not imply guilt and does not mean formal charges will necessarily follow.

Another of Mr Cutfield’s lawyer, Giovanni Rizzuti, told the Guardian on Monday that his client was “deeply affected by this ordeal”.

It comes amid tributes for the owner of the British-flagged vessel Mike Lynch, his daughter Hannah Lynch, Morgan Stanley chairman Jonathan Bloomer , his wife Judith Bloomer , Clifford Chance lawyer Christopher Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo, who all died in the disaster.

Her husband and 18-year-old daughter Hannah, however, were among the seven people who died.

Many of the survivors have stayed in Italy as authorities try to work out what happened onboard ahead of the sinking last week.

But on Sunday, Ms Bacares reportedly left Sicily along with other survivors in a private jet.

Chief prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio confirmed an investigation has been launched on Saturday.

He said his team will consider each possible element of responsibility, including those of the captain, the crew, individuals in charge of supervision, and the yacht’s manufacturer.

The Bayesian, a 184ft (56m) British-flagged luxury yacht, went down near the Mediterranean island in southern Italy last Monday.

Investigators are focusing on how a vessel deemed “unsinkable” by its manufacturer, Italian shipyard Perini Navi, sank while a nearby sailing boat remained largely unscathed.

Prosecutors said the event was “extremely rapid” and could have been a “downburst” - a localised, powerful wind that descends from a thunderstorm and spreads out rapidly upon hitting the ground.

The crew were saved, apart from the chef, while six passengers were trapped in the hull.

What is a downburst?

Officials said the superyacht had been hit by a downburst and the Italian officials said they would be looking at how it could affect one vehicle and not other nearby vessels, according to the translation of the conference.

A downburst is an intense burst of wind at ground level emenating from the strong downdraft of a thunderstorm; the wind often blows radially from a point source, as opposed to the rotating winds associated with a tornado.

Downbursts usually last just a few minutes, and can be particularly dangerous for aviation.

They have been blamed for a number of air crashes over the years, although the risk tends to be well forecast by meteorologists allowing pilots to avoid them.

A court-appointed armed guard, tasked with ensuring Mike Lynch did not abscond while facing fraud charges, has paid tribute to the tech mogul, saying the security team “became less of a detail and more like a family”.

Rolo Igno also described “the memory of a beautiful soul” in Mr Lynch’s daughter Hannah.

Mr Igno said he had the “privilege” of spending “almost every waking moment” with Mr Lynch while he was in custody in San Francisco, describing the detail as unlike any other he had ever worked and one that was “life changing”.

“As an executive protection agent, the number one rule is simple, don’t ever get close to the principal,” he said.

“They aren’t your friends, they’re a client and the relationship is strictly professional. But with Mike, that didn’t fly with him and for me that rule quickly dissolved.”

Autonomy, the software firm which Mike Lynch sold in a £8.64bn deal in 2011, was a pioneer of business data analysis, using machine learning and what Mr Lynch called “adaptive pattern recognition”.

It used a statistical method called “Bayesian inference” at the heart of its software, devised by the 18th-century mathematician Thomas Bayes.

The yacht’s name, Bayesian , harks to the same model that was at the heart of Autonomy’s – and Mr Lynch’s – success.
