High-tech yacht made from scrap metal features solar-electric technology that could make waves in ocean research: 'A significant leap forward'

A 55-foot luxury sailing catamaran has been designed with sustainability in mind, leveraging solar power and recycling among other eco-friendly practices.

Actor, film producer, and environmental entrepreneur Daniel Roesner partnered with German yacht design and engineering studio iYacht GmbH to help bring his vision to life, as reported by Interesting Engineering.

"After living four years on a steel cutter to test whether life on the water was for me, I quickly realized that it was my thing and that all I really wanted to do was make films and live on the sea," Roesner shared in a press release. He plans to use the vessel as a home, a floating film studio, and a way to conduct ocean research.

The catamaran, the Hu'chu 55, was built with 90% recycled scrap aluminum. The company states that using waste materials like license plates, road signs, and cosmetic cans reduces the carbon dioxide footprint of the aluminum sheets to one-eighth of the market average, according to iYacht.

Udo Hafner, iYacht's CEO, said "there is an increasing demand for sustainable solutions and boats designed with circularity in mind. It was truly gratifying to bring Daniel's vision to fruition."

The boat has a larger-than-normal foresail to better capture the wind's power . Two silent, vibration-free electric motors and a 100-kilowatt-hour battery storage system bolster that.

Watch now: Honda reveals how it's rethinking electric vehicles from the ground up with exciting new concept cars

Those can be charged by using either the on-board photovoltaic solar panels and the plentiful sun of the open seas or through hydrogeneration. When the boat is sailing, the motion can passively spin the propellers and generate electricity through electromagnetic induction .

Solar-powered boats , and even superyachts , have been growing in popularity. They run on sustainable, green energy instead of planet-polluting dirty fuels like diesel. Cleaner waterways and healthy marine life are just some of the upsides.

Connecting the water heating system to the solar panels can keep them cool and maximize efficiency. The rest of the vessel also focuses on sustainability and circularity. The interiors feature reclaimed wood and recycled cork, and renewable sources will power an onboard vegetable garden and film-editing room.

"We have designed and engineered a dozen multihulls in recent years, but the Hu'chu 55 represents a significant leap forward in terms of sustainability and circularity," according to Hafner.

"Daniel had a very ambitious vision, and we guided him in turning it into a feasible project."

‘Industry’ Is Back With Boats, Cocaine and Bigger Ambitions

In its new season, the HBO finance drama expands beyond the trading floor and moves into the network’s marquee Sunday-night slot.

The creators of “Industry” pitched the Season 3 opener to HBO with three words: “Coke and boats.”

“We were like, ‘Don’t kill us, but this is where we want to start Season 3,’” Mickey Down, one of the creators, said in a video call.

The HBO executives did not want to kill them. They were thrilled that the show, which follows a chaotic group of young employees at an investment bank in London and often deals with the more specialized details of finance, was going in a broader direction.

While illegal substances are nothing new for the show, most of the action had been centered on the trading floor. The new season, beginning on Aug. 11, opens with a hedonistic party on a luxury yacht, filmed in Majorca. It is a flashback with devastating implications for one of the principal characters, a rich woman named Yasmin, played by Marisa Abela.

“Coke and boats” was just one of the ways in which Down and the other creator, Konrad Kay, sought to expand the show, in the new season, Down said.

HBO hopes that the wider vision will draw a bigger audience. The series previously debuted new episodes on Mondays and now gets a marquee Sunday-night slot, taking the place of “House of the Dragon,” which just finished its second season.

“We have high hopes for the show,” said Francesca Orsi, head of drama for HBO, adding that if “the world embraces Season 3 in the way that we have, both in its critical praise but also its viewership, there’s no question that we want to continue moving forward with it.”

The most obvious example of the ways in which “Industry” is broadening is the setting: The show is no longer tied exclusively to Pierpoint & Co., the fictional firm where it began. The upstart Harper (Myha’la), fired at the end of Season 2, teams with an ambitious portfolio manager ( Sarah Goldberg of “Barry”) and plans to mess with her old employer.

The show is also experimenting with a wider array of tones and cinematic tricks. The new season includes a drug-induced hallucination sequence, an episode that plays like a riff on Martin Scorsese’s “After Hours,” multiple deaths and a mystery, which ties back to that cocaine-fueled boat trip.

When “Industry” started, in 2020, Down and Kay, who have backgrounds in finance, were green showrunners who wanted to keep their plots as authentic as possible, focusing on young strivers, office hierarchy and high-pressure deals full of financial jargon. (With a healthy dollop of sex and drugs.) Now that the characters have moved up in professional status, the creators thought they could sustain more complex, heightened story lines.

“You’re way more inclined to go with it because you feel that, oh, I think of this person as a human being because I’ve seen them get salads,” Kay said.

The show’s bigger ambitions also include a significant new addition to the cast, who is no stranger to Sunday nights on HBO. Kit Harington, the “Game of Thrones” star, is now playing an aristocrat named Henry Muck, who runs a green-tech energy company; Pierpoint is handling its initial public offering.

“Henry Muck is the first time, really, we’ve had a character in ‘Industry’ who has had a public face,” said Jane Tranter, an executive producer. “So we cast an actor who had a public face.”

At the time the role came along, Harington was looking to return to television. He had been a fan of the show, which evoked his own past on HBO despite the fact that there is nary a sword or direwolf to be found.

“It reminded me a bit of ‘Game of Thrones’ and the nature of my joining that when we were all young actors,” he said in a video interview. “I kind of had a weird sort of affinity to it.”

The presence of Muck allows the writers to dive deeper into the world of Britain’s elite while teasing out questions about ethical investment, with Pierpoint trying to boost its image by backing a professed do-gooder company. And while Muck considers himself a good guy, constantly using therapy-speak, he is far from Jon Snow, the noble hero Harington played on “Thrones.”

“There’s a sort of bluster that a lot of very posh people, very successful people in the U.K. have,” Down said.

Harington said he had encountered people like Muck in his own life — privileged types who occupy a “gilded environment,” which makes them believe they are immune to the normal rules of society.

“It was exciting coming in and playing, in more than one respect, a disrupter,” Harington said. “A disrupter to their world, a disrupter to this world, someone who sees himself as a disrupter into an industry.”

The arrival of a well-known actor like Harington could also help a series that, through two seasons, has “felt like a bit of a well-kept secret, I suppose, bit of a hidden gem,” said Harry Lawtey, who plays the underachieving Pierpoint banker Robert.

Tranter, the producer, said “Industry” is the kind of series “that you think is just for you, that only you have found.” The hope now is to level up. “There comes a point when you want everyone to find it,” she said.

”Industry” ratings have been minuscule. In Season 2, which debuted in 2022, episodes averaged fewer than 100,000 viewers on the Monday nights on which they premiered. (HBO said episodes averaged 1.4 million viewers overall, including streaming and delayed on-demand viewing.) The move to Sunday gives the show more prominence in the HBO schedule, and Orsi said the network’s streaming platform, rebranded as Max last year, is positioned to give the show more visibility than it had in earlier seasons.

In the new season, “Industry” continues to rely as much as possible on the trading-floor set it built in Wales back in Season 1, partly for budget reasons. But core characters like Myha’la’s Harper are now off on their own, and even those within the Pierpoint orbit found themselves branching out.

Ken Leung, who plays Eric Tao, a newly anointed Pierpoint partner and one of the adults in the room, said he kept getting surprised by the scripts he was reading. They included scenes in which he dressed up as Henry VIII, and others in which characters go completely off the rails.

“You got the feeling that anything could happen in a show that seemingly is in a very fixed environment,” he said. “Suddenly that’s blown wide open.”

Myha’la said, “When the world starts to open up, the possibilities are endless.”

Kay, Down and their collaborators attribute their boldness to the confidence that comes with experience, which also led the creators to direct for the first time this season. They seem to enjoy keeping their audience (and their actors) guessing, and Down said that in some ways they are even blessed by their “bad title.” While its vagueness isn’t great for online search results, it gives the creators a narrative freedom that they are now fully embracing.

As long as “Industry” stays at least loosely based in the world of business or finance, Down said, “it can really be about anything.”

Twenty-five short-course races in three days in winds that rarely topped 10 knots are more than enough to fray the nerves of the most experienced and tranquil sailor. But when it came down to brass tacks on the final day of the  Hinman Masters Team Race , held this past weekend at the New York Yacht Club Harbour Court in Newport, R.I., the key was to forget what was on the line and all the hard work required to get to that point and stay calm. “When you’re thinking about that kind of a situation, where everybody’s finishing at the same time in an important race, you’re really trying to relax and just make your boat stay in the right spot, be legal, not foul, and get across the line in front of the competition,” says Brian Doyle (above, center), who led the host New York Yacht Club to its third consecutive win. “When it’s that close, and everyone’s shooting the line, you never know how the results are going to come out. But we came out on top by inches.”

The race Doyle references was sailed earlier today between Southern Yacht Club and New York Yacht Club. After three grueling round robins among all eight teams and going into a mini round robin among the top four teams, Southern and New York were tied at the sharp end of the leaderboard with 17 points apiece. In this race, the advantage repeatedly shifted between the two teams. As all six boats approached the finish line, it was impossible to tell which team had the edge. The race turned on the battle for fifth place, which was ultimately decided within feet of the finish line. While each team still had two races remaining, the odds for the overall win had tipped decidedly in favor of the New York Yacht Club, which secured the victory by splitting its final two races. Southern Yacht Club finished second—on the podium for the fifth straight year. Eastport Yacht Club took third and Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club finished fourth.

The New York Yacht Club helped usher in a new era of adult team racing with the creation of the  New York Yacht Club Invitational Team Race Regatta for the Commodore George R. Hinman Masters Trophy  in 2000. That race, which requires skippers to be at least 45 years of age and crew to be over 40, was soon followed by the  New York Yacht Club Invitational Team Race Regatta for the Morgan Cup , an all-ages event, in 2003 and, in 2010, the  New York Yacht Club Grandmasters Team Race Regatta , which mandates skippers be at least 60 years of age and crew at least 50. The three team races are traditionally held over consecutive weekends in August at the New York Yacht Club Harbour Court, using the Club’s fleet of 22 Sonar keelboats, and annually attract some of the best adult team racers in the United States and Europe. New York Yacht Club Regatta Association sponsors for 2024 include  Helly Hansen ,  Peters & May ,  Hammetts Hotel  and  Safe Harbor Marinas .

To a spectator, team racing can seem loud and contentious, which is at least partially due to the quantity of starts, mark roundings and finishes that go into an average day. There’s simply a lot more racing, in tight quarters, on short courses, than in a typical fleet-race regatta. For the victorious New York Yacht Club team, however, the key to success lay in familiarity and quiet.

k&n yacht

“Our team’s been sailing together for several years, and we work really well together,” says Doyle. “We know what each other’s going to do. There’s not a lot of conversation between boats or even on the boats. We’re just boathandling well and consistently making moves to move up our teammates. And with that kind of teamwork, it works out well in the end.”

Of the 13 sailors who raced on Doyle’s squad this year, six raced together in the previous three editions of the Hinman Masters while another three sailed two of the previous three years. That experience and trust was essential for a regatta with predominantly light and variable winds.

“No win was ever secure, because as soon as you turned downwind, anything could happen,” says Doyle. “[On the final day] we had the wind coming over Goat Island, which made it even more tenuous, puffy and shifty all the way down the run. It didn’t matter if you were 1-2-3 [at the top mark], you could get overtaken.”

With the win, its ninth in the 25-year-history of the regatta, the New York Yacht Club widened its commanding lead in the overall win column. Southern stands second, with four. But the competition this year was as close as ever, a testament to the continued interest in this discipline and the growing collective skill level of the competitors.

“Adult team racing, though 25 years of the Hinman Masters, has grown substantially,” says Doyle. “It’s really exciting. There’s more and more clubs now with fleets of boats, particularly Sonars, which is great, because they maneuver well and they’re great for team racing. We just heard that some more yacht clubs are purchasing fleets this year, so adult team racing is going to continue to grow.”

The New York Yacht Club’s 2024 team racing schedule will conclude with the  New York Yacht Club Grandmasters Team Race , which starts on Friday, August 23, and runs through Sunday. Ten teams are scheduled to participate in this event, which mandates that skippers be at least 60 years of age and crew 50 or older.

Marine Air Filters & Flame Arrestors

Air Filters & Flame Arrestors

Like many other internal combustion engines, those used in boats and other vessels need clean air to operate. However, unlike automotive and motorcycle motors, most outboard engines don't have an air filter, just a kind of an air box to dampen engine noise. The reason is quite obvious – the quantity of dust and debris found over the water is minimum. However, there is a crucial requirement concerning inboard engines: they have to be outfitted with a flame arrestor, the part looking like a traditional filter. Flame arrestors are also installed in the air intake and can filter the air getting into the cylinders, but their main function is different.

As the name implies, they are meant to stop the flame coming from the motor in the case of backfire. Some time ago, these parts came approved by USCG, but afterward, they started to receive SAE approval. In our online store, you can find a wide range of marine air filters & flame arrestors complying with all the necessary regulations. Many of them are washable and feature the latest technology making these components highly effective in minimizing the risk of fire caused by engine backfire. We carry plenty of flanged and non-flanged models by K&N , Sierra, and other brands , along with related hose adapters and tubes.

Design services: CFD & VPP

CFD Services:  We have developed methods that allow us to apply the best tool to a specific design problem. From simpler panel code methods to the most advanced RANS models with multiple degrees of freedom in waves, we offer sensible solutions to make sure budgets are spent in the most effective way, maximizing the benefits for your project.  We perform our simulations relying on the Das Boot panel code and STAR-CCM+  RANS solver. Numerical models are run on KND parallel server as well as a remote cluster featuring several hundred cores. Most hydro matrixes are computed within 24 hours.

VPP Services:  KND has 15 years of experience developping racing yacht VPPs.  We work with the North Sails VPP, enjoying a very close relationship with its developers. Our VPP modeling capabilities range from the 'standard' fixed keel monohulls configuration to mutihulls and fully foiling yachts using 6 dof.  Our proprietary aero coefficient libraries can be scaled to fit most yacht design programs. In additions, we regularly work with sail designers to develop custom libraries for the most advanced projects.  KND will provide an efficient evaluation of the performance of any given yacht.

Feedback loop: Last but not least, we have developed a link between our VPP and sailing data analysis allowing us to constantly validate our numerical against real data and refine the accuracy level of our predictions for new yachts.

Performance analysis

KND vision relies on an in depth understanding of sailing yacht performance. Along the years, we have built a wide knowledge database and developped methods to deliver more effective analysis and reduce turnaround time.

We gathered through the years a group of expert engineers, working collectively to develop our tools and methods. Each team member has a wide experience of inshore and offshore  performance analysis, from fixed keel to fully flying yachts.

From electronics calibration, to performance reports (starts, strategic, maneuvers, performance, fleet...) our support yields better debriefs, checking sailor's feelings against valid & relevant data.  You will be able to quantify performance gains and develop your polars and sailing targets.

Custom data analysis and reporting can be provided as a remote service or on site (and even on board) depending on the specificities of each program.

k&n yacht

Performance software

Building on KND's expertise in performance analysis, we constantly develop software to make our work more efficient. We believe that these tools can help all sailors who want to look into logged data progress toward squeezing the last % of performance from their boat.

ReXY Gold is meant to provide single and multi-boat analysis for sailors relying on a gps tracker only.  ReXY Team will provide detailed insight for the most advanced programs. It works jointly with RaceReplay and PerfQuery performance analysis programs.

We proudly took part in the design and/or on water performance analysis of a number of the world's leading grand-prix sailing projects

Coronation Street fans stewing as they call out major Ken Barlow gaffe

Ken stood in the doorway looking at Cassie and Steve in Corrie

Soap fans miss nothing – and a recent Coronation Street scene was no exception, when they picked up on a continuity error in Ken Barlow ’s ( William Roache ) well-established history.

Ken is the ITV soap’s longest-serving character, having appeared in the first ever episode back in 1960.

Throughout his time on the show he’s been married four times, fathered four children, adopted another and had countless affairs – but it’s the little things that matter to Corrie viewers.

In 2013, Ken jetted off to Canada to visit grandson Adam (Sam Robertson), who had sustained an injury and needed some TLC.

Upon his return the following year , he announced to his family that he was somewhat of a changed man, and had decided to become a vegetarian.

Ken in his armchair looking at Cassie standing in the living room in Corrie

Since then we’ve seen him enjoy a number of veggie meals – often serving them up to his disgruntled friends and family.

In more recent months he’s had to employ someone else to prepare his cruelty-free dinners. After taking a nasty fall, Ken was implored by nurses to look for a private carer, and he took on neighbour Cassie Plummer (Claire Sweeney) to fulfil the role.

Things got off to a bad start when he found out that she had never trained professionally, but Cassie assured him that had cared for an ex-boyfriend in the past and was perfectly capable.

Her responsibilities have somewhat been diminished since then, as Ken continued to make a full recovery, but he’s still enjoying an extra pair of hands around the house and the added company.

Tracy talks to Cassie and Steve in the living room of Number 1 Coronation Street

His daughter Tracy (Kate Ford) threatened to throw a spanner in the works last week, when she returned from Spain full of fury. She didn’t think he required a carer, but he was quick to disagree.

But maybe she might be onto something… as Cassie had earlier told Steve (Simon Gregson) that she’d prepared him a delicious chicken casserole, that she’d made from scratch!

Now unless she used a chicken alternative, or perhaps a chunk of tofu, there is absolutely no way our Ken would shovel the clucking-good stew into his mouth.

Why was Cassie taking Ken Chicken casserole, he’s vegetarian or vegan #Corrie — Yorkie_Doc (@bridie_gray) August 14, 2024
I’m confused, why is Ken eating chicken casserole when he’s vegetarian? 🤔 — SophieⓋ (@Sophiedt70) August 14, 2024

Viewers were very quick to pick up on the blunder, with one saying on X: ‘Why was Cassie taking Ken Chicken casserole? He’s vegetarian or vegan.’

Someone else said: ‘I’m confused, why is Ken eating chicken casserole when he’s vegetarian?’

No doubt if Tracy picks up on this, she’ll have something to say.

Following an explosive row with Cassie, it’s clear that she’ll use anything against her to drive a wedge into the so-far harmonious setup!

I’m looking to remove stock air box and add K&N filter. My question is there anything other than the filter I will need to install? I’ve seen some people mention adapters and some no mention of it so I’m not sure. Also what is the most common size people use?

Looks better, more room, etc. plus the filters half the price of Yamahas. Mine needs a new one looks like shit. I understand there is no performance gain with an air filter. The stock air box is huge and takes up way to much room.

I bought the drop on replacement filters for my 242 ls but plan to wait to upgrade the air filters in my waverunners with the same engine. Just no need to spend the money right now on air filters that are still new and likely fine. I’ve purchased K&N refresh spray years ago and have used it exactly no times since, the air filters don’t seem to get dirty at all. On my sx 230 they would sometimes get oily not the case with the 240. I believe that the upgrade is the the air filters without the box, if so you may want to speak to someone when you place the order since as I recall one of the air filters needs a special adapter or the stock hose needs to be cut to get it to fit into a 240, at least the generation (2010 through 2014) because of the size/shape/use of the engine compartment. Since you are already upgrading the air filters with ones that also act as flame arrestors you may as well remove the stock flame arrestors and replace them with the rica intake sleeves (I think they are called intake modifiers and run about $50 each). I will do this to my waverunners when I upgrade the air filters, so maybe next year definitely not this year.

Do a search on yamahajetboaters.com , I think that is where I first saw posts about guys that did the same upgrade and the adapter/modifications required. if I remember correctly it’s the air filter on the forward wall of the compartment that requires some modifications because without them the air filter is too long and touches the engine which prevents it from being installed correctly. Also, if you end up buying the flame arrestor get the right ones, those for supercharged engines are a different size.

I got the answer I was looking for. Thanks for the replies.

[Kensblog] Our new boat is complete!!!

k&n yacht

Greetings all:

This is just a quick blog entry to announce that the wait is finally over. After a long Covid-induced delay, our new boat is complete! Roberta and I will be cruising this summer.

Once the boat arrives in the United States it will be “commissioned.”

We have gone through the commissioning process a couple of times on our prior boats. There are usually fine details at the end of a boat-build process, which the factory doesn’t do, that are necessary to complete the boat. For instance, on our Nordhavn 68, Sans Souci, it took months after the boat arrived in the United States to install all of the boat’s electronics. Commissioning is a time of high-highs and low-lows because, after all the waiting, you can finally see and touch the boat, but the process of completing the boat stops you from being able to go cruising.

We shall see what happens, but as you can see in the pictures, Cygnus will be arriving in near-final condition. I may be overly optimistic, but there is very little that should need to be done for Cygnus to be ready for action. We need to install the shades and soft goods (bedspreads, pillows, rugs) but that’s about it. And, our timing is perfect. Cygnus should be arriving in the United States a couple of months prior to the cruising season starting. This gives us plenty of time to finish anything that needs done.

I asked the factory to snap a few pictures of the boat before loading it onto the freighter and these are what they sent. We could not be happier. The boat looks amazing!

k&n yacht

For example, here’s a Nordhavn motorsailer that was dropped while being unloaded: https://oceanlines.biz/2009/07/vessel-assist-salvages-launch-accident-nordhavn-56-motorsailer/

Even when the freighter is underway, you aren’t 100% safe. Recently, a brand new Nordhavn 68 (the same model boat as our own Nordhavn 68, Sans Souci) was arriving brand-new from Taiwan when the freighter hit bad weather, causing extensive damage inside the boat:  http://www.mvtanglewood.com/2021/01/coming-together-to-deal-with-difficult.html

There are a lot of miles between Malaysia and Seattle, with several stops along the way. We’ve been told to expect that the voyage will take a full month.

I don’t know all the details but am assuming that Grand Banks will send a team to fire up the boat when it is offloaded from the freighter. After a month on a freighter it will probably be a mess, but will look beautiful to us. Our current plan is to meet the boat when it arrives, and ride aboard the boat as it is transported from the freighter to the dock for commissioning.

As long-time readers of my blog may know, we’ve never been on a Grand Banks 60 while it is underway. We had never even been aboard a Grand Banks 60 when we ordered the boat! Our future cruising plans will be defined by how easy the boat is to maneuver, how comfort it is at anchor, how maintenance free the boat is, and how seaworthy it feels. Our expectation is that this will be a boat that will take us anywhere we want to go, and we’ve equipped it to take us comfortably virtually anywhere in the world. That said, there can be a difference between reading reviews of a boat, reading the manufacturer’s website, watching YouTube videos, and running the boat yourself. Our goal this summer, in additional to having fun, will be to put the boat through its paces and see how it performs.

Thus far, Grand Banks has exceeded all expectations. I have no doubt Cygnus will meet all of our goals and that we have many thousands of more successful cruising miles in front of us.

Our cruising plans for this summer are unknown…

Until the Covid crisis closed the Canadian border our plans for this year had been to cruise the Canadian inside passage, and perhaps venture as far north as Alaska.

It is possible that the border with Canada will open at some point this summer. It is also possible that we’ll run the boat up to Alaska stopping only for fuel or anchoring at night as we traverse Canada. But, neither of these options is likely.

Realistically, we are likely to stay in Washington this summer. If the Canada border opens we will head north, but if it doesn’t we will not be suffering. There are more great anchorages in the San Juan Islands and Puget Sound than we can possibly exhaust in a single season. And, we are looking forward to spending some time in our home marina, Roche Harbor, on San Juan Island, which still ranks as our favorite marina ever.

That’s it for this edition of the blog.

I hope all of you are staying healthy, and I’m excited that the covid numbers seem to be declining. Let’s hope that by summer the world will be somewhat closer to normal.

Ken and Roberta Williams and, our two pups, Toundra and Keely Grand Banks 60, Cygnus https://www.kensblog.com

Looks great! The Cygnus should be perfect for island hopping this summer. How’s commissioning going?

Congrats to you, Roberta and the pups! Your vision for the boat looks like it has been fulfilled (not that I had any doubt). I tip of the hat to you and the NARCs, (Naval Architects) as she is sitting perfectly on her lines.

Regards John

Beautiful boat, Ken & Roberta.. I’m sure you’re anxious to start putting her through her paces. If Canada remains closed for the summer, as you’ve stated, there are countless locations in the San Juans and the South Sound to explore. We’ll look for your boat during our dinghy forays from the Henry Island outstation over to Roche.

Congratulations Ken and Roberta…! Cruising…2.0 😉 Your GB looks beautiful…we can’t wait to see you all on the East coast. Best of Luck and ENJOY from your old cruising pals, Tina & Braun

We are looking forward to when she is sitting at YOUR dock! Maybe next year…

Hi Roberta and Ken,

Congratulations on such a splendid accomplishment. Building a new boat is not for the faint of heart, and the two of you have knocked this one out of the park. She is absolutely stunning. Inside and out, she just screams quality. And the color- well, it is S P E C T A C U L A R.

Cindy, my bride of 48 years, and I have been cruising the east coast for many years, and we are looking forward to sharing some of our favorite anchorages with you. As readers of all of your blog posts, we have an idea of they types of special places you might enjoy.

Enjoy every moment aboard! And please keep writing as we, along with many, many others, revel in your stories. Keep each other and the pups safe!

Respectfully,

Don and Cindy

I am so jealous! This mini-yacht looks amazing! I could think of nothing better than to spend my day and nights aboard and abroad. Especially with the talent onboard!

Congrats Ken and Roberta!!!! Laurie and I look forward to hearing about your travels. We are headed to your old stomping grounds this summer….Montenegro and Croatia Alec & Laurie and Jack “Gratitude” N6403 Currently in Ragusa Sicily

I am SO jealous!!! I just told Roberta last night that I want to take our new boat back to Croatia sometime in the next five years. You will love it (other than the wind…)

Wow! She’s a beaut!

Congratulations, she is a beauty. Please start your cruising asap so that we can read your blogs.!!! You seem to have got a winner. Well done.

Congratulations. Many of us who enjoy reading your cruising blogs go back a long time. Graham & Linda Pugh – Abbey & Chloe

Congratulations.. I’ve been reading your blogs from the beginning and can’t wait to keep reading about San Souci.

Hey there, Ken! I’ve been following kensblog since San Souci was in early production (long time Nordhavn dreamer) and have to say that I’m in the group of your followers that definitely loves all of the technical and logistical details. I like the travel log stuff too, but as a systems guys and future captain, the tech and logistics stuff that you, PeterH, the Hamiltons (and more) put out is truly instructive and food for the soul. For me at least.

Having said that, I just want to give you and Roberta huge props for Cygnus. Damn! You have both done a truly exceptional job in spec’ing this little ship. She is gorgeous to behold and the little, more obscure details clearly demonstrate your years of trial and error experience on SS. Well done.

I hope the Canadian border opens for y’all, but as you said, if it doesn’t, you’re still in great waters in NW Washington and will have a fabulous time. If/when you get down around Dana Point environs we’d love to come say hello! Light winds and fair seas ahead to you both.

A beautiful yacht. The lines remind me of the Fleming Yachts.

Beautiful boat Ken and Roberta. Congratulations. You can still transit Canadian Waters to go to AK, just no “sightseeing” along the way,. We look forward to good stories and great photos. Thanks for the journey thru your decision and building process!

Right. I researched that recently. Apparently it is ok to even anchor at night, and get fuel, as long as you don’t go ashore. Assuming we have the boat ready to go by the beginning of May and can start exploring immediately, there’s some chance we’ll be bored by July and want more challenge. If the Canadian border is still closed we’ll consider heading up to Alaska.

My problem with Alaska is that I don’t really like cold weather. Alaska is beautiful but so are the San Juan Islands, and the weather is a lot better. Running a thousand miles just for the extra benefit of the wildlife seems somewhat unnecessary. Plus, the whole idea of having the boat on the west coast this season is to stay close to the mechanics while working out the kinks on a new boat.

All of that said, I have many boating friends, and if one of them says, “Come on Ken. Let’s go to Alaska,” or if Roberta twists my arm — Alaska, here we come!

PS We’ve also discussed the possibility of taking the boat out the Strait of Juan De Fuca and running south to Portland (via the Columbia River). It would give the boat a serious shakedown, and check an item off our book-length bucket list. I have no idea what we’ll really do. At this point we just want to be on the boat, anywhere. We’ve been off a boat far too long.

Congratulations Ken and Roberta! She is beautiful!

Ken and Roberta

You have designed a beautiful boat. I hope it exceeds your expectations and gives you all the love and attention you have given to it. It will be great to have your blog active again.

Best to you both Tim

Ken she looks great and I like the colour too. I will be very interested to hear your views both positive and negative when you compare cruising in this boat with Sans Souci. Good luck with the commissioning

I’m incredibly curious what we’ll think when we start cruising. Sans Souci is a tough act to follow.

My prediction:

– We will hate having to take on fuel several times a season. Sans Souci spoiled us. I typically fueled it once at the start of the season and then would never need to fuel it again until the start of the next season’s cruising. – Filling the hot tub will be a pain. The diesel furnace on Sans Souci gave us an infinite supply of hot water – I’m not going to like having the smaller vsat dome. The one we installed on Cygnus doesn’t have the same range and speed of the larger vsat (which wouldn’t fit on this boat) – We’re going to miss the heavy weight and seaworthiness of Sans Souci. It was an amazing boat! Nordhavn boats are incredible.

On the other hand:

– We are going to love having the speed available when we want it – We have no plans to cross oceans. I’m perfectly happy to load the boat on a freighter when we want it in Europe. We already have our ocean-crossing merit badge. I don’t need more than one. – I’m guessing we’ll infinitely prefer the Seakeeper to active stabilizers. – Sans Souci was a huge, heavy, boat with a lot of “windage”. Putting it into a slip when there was any wind or current was not easy. Med mooring it with just Roberta and I was virtually impossible (even though we did it!) Maneuvering this boat will be a dream come true.

Overall … A boat should be matched to its mission. Roberta and I will still do wild and crazy cruising and go to off-the-grid places. But, it won’t be quite as crazy as what we did before (like crossing the Bering Sea). For what we have in mind this will be the right boat.

Or .. so I hope!

She is a beauty, enjoy!

Absolutely amazing! Congratulations, Roberta and Ken! Looking forward to hearing of your adventures, and I also hope that the commissioning process is short and sweet!

She looks beautiful, Ken! Congratulations to you and Roberta. I’m looking forward to hearing about your cruising season. Cheers!

Thank you!!!! – Ken W

K&N Oil Filter

I know the 4.3 liter Mercruiser oil filter has a higher oil flow than a normal auto filter. I was reading that K&N has a marine filter called K&N gold they say is better than stock. Is it as good as the Mercruiser oil filter when it comes to flow? I dont really care about filtration much on the water.

Re: K&N Oil Filter Welcome aboard ! Why put a filter at all if you don't need it to filter the oil?

Re: K&N Oil Filter The Mercruiser filter always has done a great job when it comes to keeping my oil clean so I don't need any better filtration than it has. I just worry about flow to keep things cool I think heat the biggest enemy in a marine engine and a good flow is most important. This K&N filter would be nice because it's so readily available at auto zone... Marine stores aren't always easy to find or open when you need them.

Re: K&N Oil Filter Motorcraft And wal-mart perfect together. Thats where i get all my stuff. Oil also. They also have delco and ac, and all kinds of cheapo filters. No wal-mart by you?

Re: K&N Oil Filter Whatever oil filter you use, it isn't going to make one bit of difference to your oil temperature.

Re: K&N Oil Filter Yes, but I read the auto filters don't have the flow of the mercruiser brand filters. I compared the holes in the Merc brand they are huge compared to all the auto filters. I don't trust the flow not even the AC brand that's made for GM engines.

Re: K&N Oil Filter Even if you were running a high volume oil pump and a 10qt oil pan, the oil filter even plugged up with gunk will still outflow the pump, you engines main oil gallery feed off the oil pump I'll bet isn't 1/2" I don't know chevy specs, but on a ford big block 427 with improved oiling it's only a chamfered 1/2" right off the oil filter adapter. I thing all the flow rating you read are just advertising and yes some may flow more than others but it's moot, who cares if one flows 10gpm and one flows 15gpm when you engine only flows 3gpm.

Bubba1235 said: I would disagree in part. They all flow "ok" when new, but they do NOT do so well as they become clogged (thats what they are there for). Cheaply built filters use a cheap spring on the bypass that can wear/fatigue quickly and as the filter becomes clogged the bypass opens allowing non-filtered oil into engine. Click to expand...

Re: K&N Oil Filter I personally run the KN ONLY because its very hard to get to the stock filter on a SBC with no remote filter. I only use it for the nut. But if I didnt have this problem I'd run anything but a Fram.

Re: K&N Oil Filter Are you sure that the oil flow is good enough compared to the Mercruiser brand filter? Because I don't want to ruin my flawless 1989 mercruiser. If so I wasted a lot of money on filters over the years and feel like I was bamboozled by everyone that told me I won't get good enough flow from the auto filters.

Re: K&N Oil Filter I stick by genuine. That way IF a filter fails (splits or what ever the reason) you are covered from the OEM. I know because I say this from experience. Afriend has a 5.7 mercruiser with 439 hours on the clock and was outside fishing. The weather turned foul and got halfway back when alarms went off, he checked the engine bay and there was oil everywhere, he still had about 5 miles to the marina. Scouped what oil he could out of the bilge, put that in the engine (water and all). He made it back to the marina but the engine was rattling some what. Went to the Mercruiser dealer (who services his engine). Dealer filed a claim with Mercruiser who sent him a complete new engine with in 2 weeks.

Re: K&N Oil Filter You can never go wrong using oem, it's what the manufacturer calls for. That's true for anything you buy for the setup you have. Back to your friend, the oil filter failed or was it installed incorrectly. ie: The rubber o-ring pulled off the old filter, and no one checked to see it was on the old filter, and they installed a new filter with a o-ring, and there was 2 o-rings on the block and the guy in the marina had to make good. Not that merc made good. Friend didn't care someone gave him a new motor. Moral of my long post, always check that the o-ring comes off the block when you change the filter, it should still be on the can.
