Mark Twain Riverboat cigar review

The market is filled with a wide variety of cigars, each of which has a distinctive flavor character. One such choice, which is renowned for its smooth flavor transition, is the Mark Twain Riverboat Churchill cigar. This cigar is certainly worth trying, whether you are an experienced cigar smoker or are just getting started.

With tastes of floral, coffee, sweet spice, cedar, and leather, it has a medium body and produces a pleasant, smooth smoke. This cigar has a wonderfully nice finish that lingers for a while.

Connecticut, Maduro $213 (Box of 20)
 Nicaragua  Medium

Appearance of Mark Twain Riverboat Churchill

The Mark Twain Riverboat Churchill cigar features a barber pole wrapper, meaning it uses two wrappers. The first wrapper is a Connecticut shade, and the other one is a Maduro wrapper.

As for this cigar’s band, it uses a huge band that features a very rustic design. The colors of the band are brown, dark brown, white, and what seemed to be an old gold color. There’s an English man portrait in the middle and above him is the phrase “Mark Twain,” written using a white font and multiple gold circle details in the middle of each letter. Below the man is the word “Riverboat,” written in cursive in white font.

Smoking Experience

Upon lighting the Mark Twain Riverboat Churchill cigar, the flavors that kicked off immediately were sweetness and coffee. I also tasted a hint of floral, but not too much, but it was during the first third that the floral notes started to become a predominant flavor. The coffee flavor is at the very front of the flavor palette, accompanied by floral, and the sweetness of this cigar is just right. So far, the flavors are perfectly balanced, and they’re light. The construction of this one is good, but it burns unevenly. The good thing is that despite its bad burn, it didn’t make the draw tight.

For the second third of smoking the Mark Twain Riverboat Churchill cigar, it still burns unevenly, which makes my smoking experience unpleasant. There’s actually one part where the burn canoe down. The ash also didn’t hold quite well as bits of it started to fall off then next was the chunk. As for the smoke output, it gives an ample amount of smoke, and the draw is still good. For the flavor profile of this cigar, the dominant flavor became the floral notes, accompanied by coffee. The sweetness mellows down a little bit, but I could still taste it at the back. The retro-hale has a hint of sweet spice, and the wrapper of the cigar makes my mouth a little bit creamy. Basically, the flavors continued to be light, but the strength is definitely medium.

During my final third of smoking the Mark Twain Riverboat Churchill cigar, there’s a subtle hint of cedar that emerges at the back of the flavor palette and an earthy flavor. Both new flavors are not strong, but it was there, which makes them a great flavor ending note. The floral and coffee are still at the front, but both of them kind of mellow down. The sweetness at this point is already gone, but I think it’s because it transitioned to being a sweet spice and became present on the retro-hale. For the flavor transition, it definitely gained points. As for the construction of this cigar, up until the very end, it gave me a terrible burn, and the ash didn’t even hold on for an inch anymore. The smoke output is not as many too, but the draw remains good.

mark twain riverboat cigar

Overall, I enjoy smoking the Mark Twain Riverboat Churchill cigar if we only talk about its flavor. I really liked how the flavors transitioned from the first third up until the final third. Not much actually happened during the first and second third as the notes of floral and coffee only changed positions, but it was during the final third that it changed the whole game.

I was about to complain about how boring this cigar was because the flavors didn’t even reach their peak and had already mellowed down, but good thing I tasted cedar and earth flavors. Even if they’re not that rich, I still appreciate how they started to emerge at the last minute.

Now, for the construction of this cigar, this is where it lost a lot of points to me. While I didn’t struggle when it came to its draw, I had a hard time trying to even out the burn of this cigar since one part really canoe down. The ash is also not holding on very well, making it a messy experience to smoke this cigar. I almost had to relight it just to make an effort to even the burn, but it’s really bad, and there’s nothing I can do about it. The smoke output is okay, though I don’t understand why I didn’t produce much during my final third.

To simply put, I enjoy smoking the Mark Twain Riverboat Churchill cigar if we’re only talking about its flavors but for the construction, it’s a no for me. But still, this cigar is something I would smoke again in the future since I really loved how the flavors transitioned as well as the actual flavors I got which are floral, coffee, cedar, earth, and sweet spice. I considered the flavors light, but the strength of this one is indeed medium.

If you’re a cigar aficionado who enjoys smoking a cigar that has an excellent flavor transition, then I will definitely recommend this to you. I also find this good cigar perfect to smoke during great weather or whether you just feel like it. But you need to store it properly since it really did me badly on the construction of this one.

Other Cigars Reviews

Other j.c. newman cigar reviews, brick house fumas robusto.

The Brick House brand is celebrated for its high-quality cigars known for their exceptional flavor profiles, making them an ideal choice for enthusiasts. The Brick House Fumas Robusto, particularly noted for its affordable pricing, features a medium-bodied blend wrapped in a smooth Sumatran leaf, filled with Nicaraguan tobacco, and hints of coffee and nuts. However, despite its consistent flavor and reasonable price, the cigar’s overall experience is marred by a tight draw and uneven burn, resulting in a monotonous smoking experience. While it is a decent option for those on a budget, this review of Brick House Fumas Robusto  might not be a repeat purchase for those seeking a more flavorful and seamless experience.

Other Nicaraguan Cigar Reviews

Cao l’anniversaire cameroon robusto.

After a long day or during a significant event, lighting up a CAO L’Anniversaire Cameroon Robusto can offer a deeply relaxing experience for a cigar enthusiast. This medium-bodied cigar boasts an African Cameroon wrapper with Nicaraguan binder and filler, delivering a flavor profile rich with notes of nuts, coffee, and earth, accented with citrus and spice. The robusto shape provides a satisfying size, and its construction promises a firm ash and a smooth smoke. The dual bands add a visually appealing touch to the cigar’s overall presentation. As the smoking experience progresses from the initial third to the last, the flavors intensify, retaining a pleasant nuttiness throughout, while the strength edges from medium to a more substantial medium-plus body. Overall, this cigar is a superb selection for aficionados seeking a balanced, medium-bodied smoke, particularly those with a palate for premium Cameroon-wrapped cigars, as reflected in this review of the CAO L’Anniversaire Cameroon Robusto.

AJ Fernandez Last Call Maduro Geniales

The AJ Fernandez Last Call Maduro Geniales is a full-bodied cigar with a dark and oily Pennsylvania Broadleaf Maduro wrapper, a departure from the typical Broadleaf. The cigar presents a consistent flavor profile, offering a balance of sweetness, leather, toasted nuts, and a hint of coffee, though some notes subside by the final third. Its construction is praised for even burning and a solid ash hold, with no need for retouching, and its strength remains steady throughout the smoke. Despite the high-quality tobacco and craftsmanship, the cigar’s presentation is marred slightly by a band design that lacks the complexity expected from the AJ Fernandez brand. In summary, while the band’s aesthetic might not appeal to everyone, the smoking experience of the AJ Fernandez Last Call Maduro Geniales is largely satisfying for those who appreciate a consistent, coffee-forward flavor in their cigars, leading to a positive review of AJ Fernandez Last Call Maduro Geniales .

Fumare Cigar Lounge, California

The coldest I've ever been -- with apologies to Mark Twain -- was in San Francisco on a clear summer night while watching the baseball Giants play in Candlestick Park in 1981. That indelibly marked me so that when I would visit Northern California and need to rent a car to drive to Napa or Sonoma, for example, I would never ask for a convertible or try to get an upgrade. This past fall, that all changed.

I was "on assignment," as they say, and I had to visit Silicon Valley to check out a little cigar store I'd heard about in Los Gatos, just south of San Jose. In my rented ragtop, my wife and I cruised down the interstate from Oakland International with the top down. We stopped in Pleasanton for breakfast and a marching band competition, then boogied south, wind in our hair.

Los Gatos is a precious little town, made so by all the usual high-end, expensive stores you'll find in the better malls in America. In Los Gatos, though, they line the streets along with the Lamborghini, Bentley, Ferrari and Rolls dealerships and maybe the best thrift store I've ever been dragged into. When the clock struck noon, I bolted and made my way just up the hill to Fumare.

Fumare, which has been there 13 years, is housed in what the fading paint in front of the building indicates used to be the Los Gatos Soda Works, where the local Archies and Jugheads would go after school in the 1950s to hang out and have a malted beverage. Now there's a patio with a couple of tables outside. I opened the door and was greeted by a gentleman in his 70s who told me his name is "Joe, Crazy Joe." After some pleasantries and Joe's spot-on impression of Jimmy Durante, I perused the wall-and-a-half of cigars inside the front room. There was an excellent selection, all the usual, highly-rated labels, including an Arturo Fuente Don Carlos II, the stick I chose. I was planning to walk around Los Gatos and enjoy the cigar, but if I wanted to stay, I would have been very comfortable in Fumare's lounge.

The reason you can smoke at Fumare, in California, is that it's a tobacco store and a private lounge. You need to be a member to smoke here, but memberships are very reasonable, including daily memberships for $10. It's all very aficionado-friendly.

The lounge is basically a place where you can sit and watch one of two TVs and enjoy a drink, but you're not going to get table service. Joe told me that you can bring your own booze (Fumare does have some glasses) or skip down to the local liquor store and buy a bottle of wine. If you're hungry, there's the Tapestry Bistro next door that'll send someone over to take your order and then deliver your food to Fumare. You also need to check out the bathroom, the walls of which are covered with pennies.

Fumare has a second location, in San Jose near the sports arena where the Sharks play hockey. You can smoke on the patio there. I was not going to hang out at either on this beautiful, warm autumn day when I had a convertible, a great cigar and an hour-long drive to a party in Berkeley.

I lit up and put the top down. We were cruising through Los Gatos and were not tempted to stop. The cigar was very nice and remained so until I hit about 60 mph. Then the wind kicked up and I was not controlling the ash very well. It was getting on my shirt, but I didn't care. Dude, the top was down and I was going fast. Of course, I'm not going to recommend that this is the best way to enjoy a great cigar. But it's not all that bad either.

Fumare was bought nearly two years ago by Adam Whitmyer, his brother and a friend. They're looking into getting a liquor license. Adam's day job is selling luxury cars in Silicon Valley. If a customer buys a Bentley, he says, he'll treat them to a box of cigars from Fumare.

"Usually it's a box of something we have a lot of, but if they spend $400,000 with me and they ask for a specific cigar, I'll try to make that happen," Adam said. Then he asked if I was interested in a Bentley.

Alejandro Benes lives in Southern California where he drives at an average speed of 9 mph on the 101.

Cigar hunting in san jose, costa rica.

S an Jose, Costa Rica is a great place to visit, and a wonderful place to live, however in the world of cigars, it has it's darker side.

San Jose is kind of like the Mos Eisley of the world for cigar smoker... As Obi-Wan put it, it is a "wretched hive of scum and villainy."

You are certainly think... "How can this guy say something so strong about San Jose, Costa Rica... this is his adopted home... how bad can it really be?"

Well, yes- my words are extreme, but only because I recommend that you hunt, shop, and buy with EXTREME caution.

My research show that there are no less that 40 cigar producers in the country. However, if you look in the yellow pages, you will only find one. I understand that the yellow pages is not a great guide, and it is a bit of a mafia in itself, but use that example as a metaphor for the situation in Costa Rica.

As many tourist locations outside the US, there is a huge market for fake Cuban cigars, however due to Costa Rica's popularity combined with it's proximity to Nicaragua (to provide rollers and tobacco), the number of fake cigars out there is enormous.

Nearly everyone know the street is full of fakes, but that is not where it ends. Many hotels, restaurants, and even tobacco stores are tainted- mainly unknowingly, others foolishly.

That being said, there are a number of places where you can find real Cuban cigars. La Mata De Tobacco (Multi-Plaza), Don Benigno Cigars (kiosk in Plaza Mayor), La Casa Del Habano (San Pedro near the mall), to name a few.

There are good and bad fakes, and you my find a fake cigar that you enjoy, but truth be told, it is not right, proper, or healthy (who knows how the tobacco was cured).

I am writing this because it is very important to me that cigar smokers get access to great cigars, and purchasing fake cigars in San Jose, Costa Rica is bad for tourism, but is worse for the cigar smoker who gets them.

Proceed with caution when cigar hunting in San Jose, Costa Rica. There are plenty of opportunities to find the "real deal" so do not be foolish. Enjoying a great cigar is a wonderful experience, and following my advice can make that wonderful experience a reality while on a trip in San Jose.

Are you still in Costa Rica? I just bought from a place online it is called solocigar.com and they are located Suite 3, Plaza Uruca San Jose, Costa Rica I was wondering what you thought of this place?

I am still in Costa Rica. Based on the prices they are 100% fake. You might find some decent cigars from time to time (because sometimes even fakes can e good), but it is best to not fuel the counterfeit market. TC-Keith says, "Stay away."

A good cigar is a good cigar , i have bought them everytime im down there, the key is they have to be fresh , look at the wrappers if there dark they are old , tell the vender you want some with a nice gold color. I have also tried a costa cigar called Joya Real it was better than the so called cubans I bought and again it was fresh.

Do you know of any legit shops in Liberia, Costa Rica?

As of right now, I can not confirm any shops in Libera are for real. There is talk about some people whom I trust opening, but nothing yet. I would even be cautious in hotels. Very soon, if not already, in the Libera Airport the Duty Free IMUS store will be opening. They are 100% reliable, but are only availabe to travelers. Another option is having cigars, from San Jose, shipped to you from a reliable shop. Email me directly, and I can help you out. Thanks, TC-Keith

Keith, I've been buying cigars from Jairo Rodriquez for over a year and have been very happy till this last shipment. Not one of the 300 cigars are smokable. In the past a few have been bad but not the total shipment.Joya Real is the company and I'd like to send them back but have no address. Can you help me out?His # (506)379-0401. Richard Roundtree

Dear Richard, As first I was not going to post the comment, but I decided to go ahead and do it so that I could write back to you. I contacted Jario and explained. He said that he has not recently checked his order, but that he will try to get in contact with you. I am on your side here, and you should be 100% satisfied with the product (for the price). Cigar smoking is something that I enjoy way too much to see it disgraced by people trying to make a quick buck by selling bad product. Jairo seemed like a nice enough guy, and I hope that he sorts things out for you. When this is resolved, please add a comment to this post explaining how things worked out. Thanks, Keith

I am travelling to San Jose for a poker tournament on the 21st of May. I will be staying at the Ramada Plaza Herradura. Do you know of a place close to this that has good cigars? I would like to bring some home for my father in law and want top quality. Thank you.

I will be travelling to San Jose on May 21st for a poker tournament. I'll be staying at the Ramada Plaza Herradura. Do you know of a cigar shop close to this where I can get some top quality stuff? I want to bring some home for my father in law and really set him up nicely. Thanks in advance!

djoshaz, There is a Cigar Kiosk is PLAZA MAYOR (pronounce MY JOR) in Pavas. That is the closed and easiest to get to. They carry a decent selection of cigars, but you are guaranteed that all are authentic. I personally would recommend their signature brand "Don Benigno." Their number is 2296-8111. Keith

djoshaz: I just returned from Costa Rica yesterday, and more specifically Herradura. I found a Casa Habanos at the Marina Shops of the Marriott Los Suenos resort. I bought a few cigars for smoking while there, and found them all to be fresh and excellent although somewhat expensive. ($12 to over $40 per stick) I paid $22 for a Hoyo EL which was definitively worthwhile. It was one of the finest, fullest, most complex smokes I've had in a long while. (and I've smoked most of them) I hope this reaches you in time.

Hi Keith, You have any info about this blend, Mythos Solitude Cigar Trophy Best Value 2008. Please let me know

Never heard of it, do you have any additional information?

I was very interested in this thread and then it died... I am going to San Jose in two weeks and wanted to pick up some cigars while there. Thanks for the advice in the original post and with any luck, the legit places you mentioned may be within my reach.

hi where can i buy cuban cigars, really cheap i dont care if there fake.

Keith - I just wanted to thank you for recommending Don Benigno's kiosk in Pavas. We were there in October `10 and told our Taxi driver to make a stop to buy cigars. The kiosk is very unexpecting but delivered on the Montecristo cubans I was looking for. At $12 each I was more than happy and also bought some D.B. cigars.

Can I purchase cigars at San Jose airport ?? Won't have time for much other options

I am traveling to Costa Rica next week. I will be in Cuidad Quesada and the Puntarenas area. I won't be able to travel into San Jose or Heredia. Do you know of any legit cigar stores in the areas that I am traveling? Thanks, Keith

Thanks Keith, I traveled to San José last week and went to both Don Beningos in San Pedro and La Mata based on your recommendation. Finding the real thing requires hunting and education. I was more impressed with Beningos and bought some of their brand, too. For those traveling to San Jose: Look for bar code and the two Cuba stickers on boxes and look for Habana on band as well as as the three wrap edges close together and even to each other on the blunt end characteristic of almost all true cubans.

I have a huge selection of Habannos and am a certified dealer No. 0021. The Havana Humidor room at Hotel Little Havana, Ave 9 and calle 3.5, Barrio Amon, San Jose, CR 506 8776372

I will be traveling to Costa Rica in July 2012, and be staying close to Atenas. Are there any good cigar stores there? Thanks, Greg

San Jose, even with it's problems, is still the best location in Costa Rica to find cigars. In addition to excellent Don Benigno Cigar, rolled in San Jose, there is a new Casa Del Habano here in town. Although I have not visited it, I know the owner/manager and he is a class act. See: http://www.cruzcanelahabanos.com/ for more information.

Are there any cigar shops around La Fortuna

When choosing the original look for the original seal and you should buy it in the convenient store that sells original products. You could also identify if it is fake or not once you tasted it. :D

They are really popular with this Cuban cigar. Hopefully tourist and everyone will not be fooled by a fake one and buy an original Cuban Cigar.

I'm traveling to CR next week so looking for quality cigar shops. I won't have much time in San Jose, but interested in shops near La Fortuna and/or Quepos. Any help?
