Terms and conditions, charter experts, llc terms & conditions.

PLEASE READ THESE TERMS AND CONDITIONS (“ Terms ”) CAREFULLY AS THEY CONTAIN IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING YOUR LEGAL RIGHTS, REMEDIES AND OBLIGATIONS AS WELL AS A SECTION GOVERNING THE JURISDICTION AND VENUE OF DISPUTES. THESE TERMS ALSO CONTAIN A LEGALLY BINDING RELEASE, WAIVER OF LIABILITY, AND ASSUMPTION OF RISK. By creating a username, a login, clicking submit, using the services of Charter Experts, LLC d/b/a Virgin Island Sailing® (“ Broker ) or by accessing Broker’s website, you agree that you have read, and acknowledge your acceptance of these Terms. The Terms are subject to change at any time without notice at Broker’s sole discretion. Additionally, any transaction for which you have made payment shall be governed by the form of Terms in effect at the time of such payment notwithstanding any subsequent changes hereto.

If you are obtaining a quote, information, booking travel for and/or securing or procuring a Charter (as that term is defined in Section 1 below) for more than just yourself, all references below to “Charterer” or “you” (and derivations thereof) shall be read to mean you on behalf of yourself and each individual within your group for whom you are obtaining a quote, information, booking travel for and/or securing or procuring Charter.

These Terms shall be read together and construed, to the fullest extent possible, to be in concert with any other agreement by or among Broker and Charterer. To the extent they cannot be so construed, then in the event of any direct conflict between these Terms and any other agreement by or among Broker and Charterer (including but not limited to the agreement executed by Charterer for a Charter Reservation (as that term is defined in Section 1 below), these Terms shall prevail.

  • Prepaid Charter Reservations . Typically, Broker negotiates charter rates in advance with the yacht owner or charter company (“ Charter Provider ”) to obtain cost-effective rates, and facilitate reservations and availability for yacht charters, excursions and travel (the “ Charter ”). Broker also provides services to you by facilitating the booking of reservations for consideration and receives a commission from the Charter Provider (the “ Broker Fee ”). The Broker Fee is included in the pre-negotiated Charter rate provided to you, plus taxes and other fees where applicable. You agree that your payment is for the total amount set forth in the applicable Charter agreement (which Charter Provider may refer to as a Charter Contract, Charter Agreement, Booking Terms & Conditions, Instructions and Terms for Accommodations, as well as other derivations) provided to you by Broker (“ Charter Agreement ”). Upon execution of the Charter Agreement and receipt of the applicable deposit, you will have made a reservation for the Charter that authorizes Broker to facilitate the Charter on your behalf (“Charter Reservation”), including making payment arrangements with the Charter Provider. You further agree that Broker is a third-party beneficiary to the Charter Agreement and shall have the right to enforce such agreement to the extent it deems such enforcement necessary or advisable to protect its rights hereunder or under the Charter Agreement.

Broker retains the Broker Fee as compensation in arranging your Charter Reservation. The Broker Fee varies based on the amount and type of Charter and/or services provided by Broker.  By making a Charter Reservation, you accept and agree to the relevant cancellation and no-show policy of the Charter Provider set forth in the Charter Agreement. Cancellation and no-show policies vary for each Charter. Carefully read the Charter Agreement and additional information provided to you by Broker. It is expressly agreed by Charterer that the Broker Fee is earned at the time the Charter Reservation is made. Late payment, wrong credit card or debit card details, invalid credit or debit cards, or insufficient funds are for your own risk and account, and you will not be entitled to any refund of any prepaid amount unless the Charter Provider expressly agrees otherwise under the Charter Agreement or in some other signed writing.

  • Charter Rules and Restrictions . Additional terms and agreements will apply to your Charter Reservation and any purchase or rental of equipment or other items, supplies, provisions and travel you may select. Please read those additional terms carefully. In particular, if you have purchased airfare, please ensure that you read the full terms and conditions of carriage issued by the supplier. You agree to abide by the terms of purchase imposed by any supplier with whom you elect to deal, including but not limited to payment of all amounts when due and compliance with the supplier’s rules and restrictions regarding availability, charges, fares, and use of products and services.
  • Payment . All payments must be made by personal check, bank/wire transfer, ACH payment and/or with a major credit card unless otherwise expressly stated. The total price for the Charter Reservation will be billed in U.S. Dollars unless otherwise stated. Some banks and credit card companies impose fees for international transactions. If you are making a reservation from outside of the United States on a US credit card, your bank may convert the payment amount to your local currency and charge you a conversion fee. This means the amount listed on your credit or bank card statement may be in your local currency and therefore a different figure than the amount provided by Broker for the Charter Reservation. In addition, a foreign transaction fee may be assessed if the financial institution that issued your credit card is located outside of the United States. Booking international travel may be considered to be an international transaction by the financial institution or card company. The currency exchange rate and foreign transaction fee is determined solely by your financial institution on the day that it processes the transaction. If you have any questions about these fees or the exchange rate applied to your booking, please contact your financial institution. Broker shall not be liable to you for any such service, conversion, or exchange fee.

Broker expressly reserves the right to cancel your Charter Reservation if full payment is not timely received as set forth in the Charter Agreement.

  • Cancellation and Rescheduling . You may cancel or change your Charter Reservation as set forth in the Charter Agreement by and among you, the Charter Provider and/or Broker. Please note that some Charter Providers do not permit changes to or cancellation of reservations after they are made, or after a certain date, as indicated in the Charter Agreement. You agree to abide by the terms of the Charter Agreement with respect to your Charter Reservation. Broker will not be responsible for reimbursing Charterer for any previously tendered deposits or payments by Charterer and disclaims all liability for the failure of a Charter Provider to refund or return any such funds.
  • Credit Card Transactions and Chargebacks . If for any reason, any Charter Provider is unable to provide the Charter, or any part thereof, for which you have contracted, your remedy lies against the Charter Provider, and not against Broker. However, Broker will use reasonable efforts to assist you and Charter Provider in reaching a resolution to a dispute between you and the Charter Provider. In the event that your payment has already been transferred from Broker to Charter Provider or to an escrow account, you agree that you will not seek a chargeback against Broker for such amounts transferred. You further agree to indemnify and hold Broker harmless from and against any liability, loss, damage or expense (including without limitation, reasonable attorneys’ fees) that Broker may incur in connection with chargebacks against Broker or under the Charter Agreement and your performance thereunder. If Broker incurs any costs, including but not limited to attorneys’ fees, to recover any payments charged back by your credit card company or other financial institution, you agree that you will be liable for these costs. If your payment is declined for any reason, you agree to settle any amounts owed to Broker via money order, cashier’s check, personal check or bank/ACH transfer immediately.
  • Broker Responsibility . Broker makes arrangements with the Charter Provider. Broker additionally makes additional arrangements with other suppliers for the various components and other services that comprise your Charter (“Charter Suppliers”). Broker is not an agent of these Charter Providers or the Charter Suppliers (and the Charter Providers and Charter Suppliers are not agents of Broker). Broker expressly disclaims any liability for the actions or omissions of the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers. The Charter Providers and the Charter Suppliers reserve the right to refuse service to you at their sole discretion. Broker assumes no liability for the acts of the Charter Provider or the Charter Suppliers in refusing service. Broker is not responsible for schedule changes and does not offer compensation for those changes. Broker is not responsible under any circumstances for any injury or damages you may suffer, in connection with sea, air or ground transportation, hotel accommodations, or other travel or excursion services arranged by Broker.

You understand Broker is not the source or supplier of the Charter or other travel services you requested and acts solely as a broker for the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers. You agree that the Charter Provider and Charter Suppliers whose names appear in the information supplied to you are those who are solely responsible for providing the Charter you purchase. You consent to and request the use of the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers and agree to not hold Broker responsible should any of them: (i) fail to provide the Charter or travel services you purchased, whether or not such services are listed in the Charter Agreement or otherwise, (ii) fail to comply with any applicable law, or (iii) engage in any negligent act or omission that causes you any sort of injury, damage, delay or inconvenience.

By using Broker’s services, you waive and release any claim against Broker, its affiliated and subsidiary companies, and their respective officers, directors, employees, contractors, and agents, arising out of or in connection with any loss of or damage to property or injury to any person caused by reason of (i) any defect, negligence, or other wrongful act or omission, or any failure of performance of any kind, by any Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, or any other provider of sea, airline, hotel, ground transportation or any other travel provider connected to or otherwise associated with the Charter, (ii) any claim for inconvenience, loss of enjoyment, mental distress or other similar claim, (iii) any delayed departure, missed connection, substitute accommodation, termination of service or change in fares or rates, and (iv) overbooking, flight or other travel cancellation, lost or misconnected personal property, or any claim arising out of the air transportation portion of your travel, and (v) or any other claim arising out of or otherwise related to the Charter Agreement or services provided by the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers.

Excepting only liability that directly arises from the gross negligence or willful misconduct of Broker, you will not hold Broker responsible for any injury, damage or loss you may suffer while on a Charter, whether incurred on the Charter or in connection with any other rental, purchase, excursion or activity, regardless of the relationship of any of the foregoing with the Charter Provider or the Charter Suppliers.

  • Your Responsibility . By booking a Charter with Broker, you agree to defend and indemnify and hold harmless Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, and each of their respective officers, directors, employees and agents, from and against any and all claims, causes of action, demands, recoveries, losses, damages, fines, penalties or other costs or expenses of any kind or nature, including but not limited to reasonable legal fees, arising out of or in connection with: (i) your breach of these Terms or the documents referenced herein; (ii) your violation of any law or rights of a third party; or (iii) your use of the Broker website.

You will review your Charter Agreement and travel documents for accuracy upon receipt. You understand that it is your responsibility to review the accuracy of all details in the Charter Reservation provided to you, and that you may contact Broker if you have any questions.

You assume full and complete responsibility for checking and verifying any and all passport, visa, vaccination, or other entry requirements of your destination(s), and all conditions regarding health, safety, security, political stability, and labor or civil unrest at such destination(s).

You understand that Broker recommends purchasing travel insurance to cover certain risks inherent in travel such as supplier bankruptcy and the inability to travel due to a medical or personal emergency.

  • No Warranties . All Charters, products, services, advice and information is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis without warranties of any kind, either expressed or implied to the fullest extent permitted under the law, including but not limited to, warranties of title or implied warranties of merchantability, satisfactory quality or fitness for a particular purpose. Without limiting the above, no warranty or guarantee is made (i) regarding the acceptance of any reservation request or Charter Reservation; (ii) regarding the availability of Charters, or any other product and/or services through Broker; (iii) that the use of Broker’s website will be error-free; or (iv) regarding the completeness, accuracy, reliability or quality of any information, content, data, service, advice or merchandise provided by Broker or through Broker’s website.

Broker has no special knowledge regarding the Charter Provider’s or Charter Supplier’s financial condition, unsafe conditions, health hazards, weather hazards, or climate extremes at locations to which you may travel during or otherwise in connection with your Charter.

  • Limitation on Liability . In no event shall Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, and/or their respective affiliates, or any employees, agents, officers, directors, members or managers of any of the foregoing (“Broker and Charter Releasees”), be liable for any direct, indirect, punitive, incidental, special or consequential damages arising out of, or in any way connected with, your access to, display of or use the Broker’s website, the Charter or services provided to you in connection with the Charter (including, but not limited to, your reliance upon opinions of the Broker), whether based on a theory of negligence, contract, tort, strict liability, consumer protection statutes, or otherwise, and even if Broker and/or any other of the Broker and Charter Releasees have been advised of the possibility of such damages.

If, despite the limitation above, Broker or the Broker and Charter Releasees are found liable for any loss or damage which arises out of or in any way connected with any of the occurrences described above, then Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Supplier and the Broker and Charter Releasees will in no event exceed, in the aggregate, the greater of (a) the Broker Fee, and (b) One-Hundred Dollars (US $100.00).

The foregoing limitation of liability reflects the allocation of risk between the parties. The limitations specified in this section will survive and apply even if any limited remedy specified in these Terms is found to have failed of its essential purpose. The limitations of liability provided in these Terms inure to the benefit of Broker and/or its providers.

The foregoing does not affect any liability which cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law.

  • Limitation on Time to File Claims . ANY CAUSE OF ACTION OR CLAIM YOU MAY HAVE ARISING OUT OF RELATING TO BROKER’S SERVICES OR THE WEBSITE MUST BE COMMENCED WITHIN ONE (1) YEAR AFTER THE CAUSE OF ACTION ACCRUES, OTHERWISE, SUCH CAUSE OF ACTION OR CLAIM IS PERMANENTLY BARRED.
  • Waiver . No waiver by Broker of any term or condition set forth in these Terms shall be deemed a further or continuing waiver of such term or condition or a waiver of any other term or condition, and any failure of the Broker to assert a right or provision under these Terms shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision.
  • Severability . If any provision of these Terms is held by a court or other tribunal of competent jurisdiction to be invalid, illegal or unenforceable for any reason, such provision shall be eliminated or limited to the minimum extent such that the remaining provisions of the Terms will continue in full force and effect.
  • Governing Law and Mandatory Venue . The laws of the State of Florida govern the rights and obligations of the parties to this Agreement and the interpretation, construction and enforceability thereof. You agree that any action or proceeding initiated by Charterer against Broker shall be brought solely in the federal and state courts of Hillsborough County, Florida, and you submit to the jurisdiction of those courts and waive any objections to the exercise of personal jurisdiction over you by those courts. In the event any action or proceeding is initiated by Charterer in a court outside of Hillsborough County, Florida, Charterer agrees to pay Broker’s costs and reasonable attorneys’ fees associated with defending such action or proceeding and waives any and all defenses to the transfer of said action or proceeding, whether jurisdictional or otherwise, to a federal or state court in Hillsborough County, Florida.

Leadership is often defined as "the action of inspiring others to act in concert to achieve a particular goal." It signifies the harmony in actions that lead to a common objective. A genuine leader not only exudes confidence but also paves the way for their followers towards triumph. Over the years, various leadership styles have been identified and discussed by psychologists.

Qualities such as intelligence, adaptability, extroversion, innate self-awareness, and social competence often emerge as the hallmarks of impactful leaders. There's a consensus that these traits mold an individual into an effective leader. Interestingly, some theories suggest that extraordinary situations can thrust an ordinary individual into the spotlight, bestowing upon them the mantle of leadership. It's also believed that leadership isn't a static trait but an evolving journey. It underscores the belief that with dedication and the right resources, anyone can hone their leadership abilities.

True leadership goes beyond merely advocating for a cause. It involves taking responsibility, igniting motivation in others, and differentiating oneself from just being a 'boss'. A leader's essence lies in their ability to inspire and propel people towards grand visions, whereas a manager typically focuses on oversight and operational aspects.

4 Examples of Leadership Essays

Qualities of a good leader, introduction.

Confidence is the most important attribute first of all. One of the most important qualities in a leader is confidence in one's own abilities. A lack of self-assurance is fatal to a person's leadership potential. If you want others to follow you, you need to exude self-assurance. It's imperative for a leader to have faith in his own judgment and actions. How can people want to follow him if he doesn't even know what he's doing?

Every effective leader knows that they need to be an inspiration to their followers. A leader needs to set an example for his team. In addition, he ought to inspire them whenever feasible. A leader must also maintain optimism in trying times.

What qualities a good leader must have?

Leadership is the ability to influence and guide individuals or groups toward a common goal. A leader must possess several qualities to be effective, including:

Communication skills: A leader must be able to communicate their vision and goals clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing. This requires excellent listening skills, empathy, and the ability to adapt to different communication styles.

Emotional intelligence: A leader must be able to understand and manage their own emotions, as well as those of their team members. This includes being able to understand and respond to the emotions of others, and handling conflicts in a constructive manner.

Visionary: A leader must have a clear and inspiring vision of the future, and be able to articulate this vision in a way that motivates others to work towards it.

Strategic thinking: A leader must be able to think critically and creatively to identify and solve problems, make decisions, and develop plans and strategies to achieve their goals.

Flexibility: A leader must be able to adapt to changing circumstances and be open to new ideas and perspectives. This requires the ability to embrace change, be innovative, and continuously learn and grow.

Integrity: A leader must have strong ethics and values, and be willing to make difficult decisions that are consistent with their beliefs. This requires honesty, transparency, and accountability.

Decisiveness: A leader must be able to make tough decisions quickly, without undue hesitation or procrastination. This requires courage and the ability to take calculated risks.

Empowerment: A leader must be able to delegate responsibilities, give team members the resources they need to succeed, and foster a sense of ownership and accountability among their team.

Conclusion

These qualities are essential for effective leadership, and when combined with hard work, determination, and a commitment to excellence, can help leaders to achieve great things.

How one can be a Great Leader?

Leadership is the act of performing the duties of a leader. In the business world, for instance, it is essential to have someone in charge of a team to ensure everything runs well. Effective leadership is essential for any group that wants to maximize its prospects of success.

Leadership Comes from Experience

As we've shown, leadership can be innate in some cases but is more often learned through practice and exposure. Sometimes the best traits of a leader must be learned over a lengthy period of time, so that one can become a notable one, proving that leadership is not always about a person's innate qualities. Leaders should continuously be on the lookout for opportunities to grow their leadership skills.

Nobody can disagree that experience is a key component of leadership. Numerous examples exist to back up this claim, such as:

Instance 1:

Our school's head boy or girl has traditionally been an older student who has been around for a while and thus has a better grasp of the ins and outs of school politics.

Instance 2:

When there is a vacancy for a team leader, it is common practice for the employee who has consistently put in the most effort and attention to the office job to receive a higher number of votes than their coworkers.

“The best teacher for a leader is evaluated experience.” - John C. Maxwell

How one can be a Great Leader/Skills to be a Great Leader?

Effective leadership is a skill that develops through time. Developing into a leader with all the qualities that are needed takes a lot of hard work and potential. Being a prominent leader calls for a wide variety of traits. Some of these characteristics are addressed in further detail below:

One should be a Good Communicator

To be an effective leader, one must be able to convey his thoughts clearly to his/her/its subordinates.

Should have Confidence

The individual should have faith in what he says and does.

Give Credit to other Team Members too

A leader not only needs to impose his viewpoints and opinions instead he must also hear to the suggestions of other members of the team and offer them credit if their concept is appropriate.

Good Bond with the Team

A leader's ability to command respect from his team members depends on his ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with them.

Leads with Responsibility

A leader needs to be completely committed to his position. It's important that he takes on responsibility so that he can effectively deal with the various challenges he will inevitably face.

Any group or organization needs a leader above all else. Leadership development takes time and effort. One needs to have lived through a lot to be an effective leader. It's not enough to simply have years of experience in the field; one must also have the traits that make one an effective leader. You can't be a great leader unless you possess certain traits.

What makes a Good Leader?

Trying one's hand as a leader appears easy when viewed through this lens. Is that so tough? Of course not; leading is difficult, and not everyone aspires to be a leader. The vast majority of us have settled into well-established careers where we report to superiors and make a living. Still, not everyone is content to go along with the crowd. They become leaders in whatever field they pursue. A leader is an example to followers and will prioritize the needs of those around them.

Some Unique Qualities of a Leader

Many individuals resort to their leaders to vent their frustrations, therefore it's important for them to be good listeners.

A leader ought to be completely forthright; they can't play favorites or give anyone preferential treatment. One of the most essential qualities of a strong leader is the ability to make decisions with integrity.

They need to be aware of the bigger picture and understand what makes an individual stand out or become a leader. It's their expertise in addition to other distinguishing traits. Their awareness of current events and the results of recent studies is essential. In many ways, this is helpful, and it's the leader's responsibility to stay current.

Since some might not understand them, they should utilize straightforward, easily comprehended language. Leaders need to be able to communicate effectively at all times. In reality, what sets them apart is their exceptional communication skills. Adolf Hitler was such a gifted orator that his followers believed every word he said.

No matter how you're feeling or what's going on in the world, if you listen to a leader, they may make you feel energized. Since leaders are in charge of inspiring confidence in their followers, they can't afford to be wary or unsure of themselves. People tend to blindly follow their leaders.

Whether you're a leader or a doctor, you should devote yourself completely to your chosen field. Everything we do is for the benefit of others; engineers, for example, spend much of their time designing and constructing buildings for other people. So, take pride in what you do, and if you possess the aforementioned traits, you are also a leader who doesn't have to rely on others to succeed. No matter what you do, aspiring to leadership positions will always benefit others.

For the simple reason that no intelligent and hardworking kid would ever be considered for leadership. Student leaders are most often selected from among those who participate fully in all activities.

An effective leader can be developed in anyone who has the determination and drives to do so. Both the strengths and the areas for improvement should be nurtured. Whether in the classroom, the workplace, or the political arena, leadership is always necessary. Therefore, one can exercise leadership anywhere they like inside their own organization.

What are the types of Leadership?

The ability to lead is a rare trait that not everyone possesses. The ability to do so is a gift, so count your blessings if you possess it. However, it is crucial to grasp the various leadership styles before you go ahead and polish your skills.

It's no secret that this method of leading has its detractors.

Cross-Cultural Leadership

The leadership of this type is necessary when interacting with people from various cultural backgrounds. Because of the wide variety of cultures represented in the workforce across the United States, many managers and executives hold cross-cultural positions.

Laissez-Faire Leadership

The members of the team are given responsibility in this style of management. They are free to choose how they spend their time at work, with minimal oversight from the boss. It's not a good way to lead, according to experts.

More specifically, to end up with a flawless leadership essay, you will need to indicate what makes a person a good leader. For achieving the latter, you will most likely need to conduct research and trace how a particular person reaches his or her goals. In other words, the task is to discover which actions the person undertakes, what their followers say about him or her, and how the person organizes the work. So, a leadership essay implies providing real-life success examples and further revealing them.

If you are struggling with this step, you may think of some of the most influential people, read about them, and find out what makes them unique. Of course, your leadership essay introduction will always vary depending on the topic of the essay. However, you can always begin by stating your vision of leadership regardless of the topic. Additionally, to motivate the reader and instantly catch his or her attention, you may use a quote of a famous leader, or simply a quote which you find relevant to the topic. Be aware that you should avoid outlining the essence and the role of the leadership in your introduction; leave it for the body paragraphs.

What you may also do in your leadership essay is ask a question, which will most likely intrigue the leader. Or it will at least give your reader an overview of what you will dwell on  in your essay.

Body Paragraphs

You will need to divide the main body into 3-5 paragraphs to make the structure more comprehensive. What you have to do at this point  is  give your reader a sound understanding of your ideas. Therefore, try to fit each idea in a single body paragraph so that you do not confuse your reader. Do not hesitate to indicate your examples to strengthen your arguments. For instance, you may explain a fact that makes a particular person you are writing about a real leader.

Also, always stick to your thesis statement and don’t forget that the body paragraphs should reveal the parts of your thesis statement.

As you may already know, you need to restate your opinion and briefly summarize all the points from the main body in conclusion. For instance, if you wrote your essay on qualities of an effective leader, state the most fundamental qualities and indicate why they matter the most. Besides, try not to copy what you have already written in the body – it is better to restate your opinion using different words. And, of course, beware adding any new and extra information; indicate only those points that you have already outlined in the text. Finally, keep in mind that it is always favorable to keep your concluding remarks short.

Leadership Essay Examples

Writing a leadership essay requires some research and time. In case you feel the necessity to go through an essay example, below is a leadership essay sample you can refer to.

Is leadership an inborn or an acquired feature?

Is everyone capable of becoming a leader, or is this ability innate? A lot of researchers have been struggling to answer this question. One assumption about leadership implies that the leader is the person who possesses particular characteristics. Another assumption claims that leaders are capable of acquiring specific features over their life span. As the evidence shows, leaders own many features that distinguish them among others and make more and more people become their followers. These might be cognitive abilities, psychological traits, professional qualities, and a lot more, and all of them will be either acquired or innate. Based on the importance of leadership qualities, such as commitment, stress resistance, and the ability to make quality decisions, it is reasonable to claim that leaders are made, not born.

One can deem commitment as one of the top fundamental qualities of the leader. In essence, such a feature indicates that a person is passionate about the common goal, strives to be a team player, and makes every effort to reach a shared goal. As the history shows, none of the successful companies was uncoordinated by an influential, committed leader: Apple, Amazon, Microsoft – all of these companies are examples of dominant teams led by a dedicated leader. A committed leader also inspires his or her team to achieve common goals and put more effort into the shared activity. Besides, commitment is unlikely to be an innate feature; it instead comes with experience. This is so, since commitment implies dedicating oneself to the shared task, and one can reach it only via learning and continuous self-improvement.

Stress resistance is another incredibly important feature that every good leader should possess. This is because only a stress-resistant leader has sufficient capabilities to overcome any complexity and not let the anxiety and stress prevent him or her from making proper decisions. Besides, such a leader will most likely have a positive influence on the team, as long as leading by example will motivate the team members to attain the same emotional stability. What is so far familiar about stress resistance as an effective leader’s feature is that it can be either innate or attained. However, although some researchers admit that emotional stability is something one is born with, it is not entirely true; many people still put a great effort into self-improvement, changing the attitude to unfortunate situations, and so on. Therefore, being resistant to stress can be mostly attributed to a personality.

An ability to make high-quality decisions most likely determines the chances for an enterprise’s success. In particular, such quality is incredibly fundamental for a company of any size and professional orientation. Additionally, it is one of the top tasks of a good leader to make final decisions. What he or she should do implies brainstorming, discussing various opinions in the group, making forecasts, analyzing all the pros and cons. However, the leader is the one to make a final decision. Thereby, he is in charge of researching the market, discovering all the hidden truths, and analyzing the organization’s potential and capabilities to result in the most effective decision. As it flows logically from the latter, an ability to make sound quality decisions is purely a professional quality. This leads to the conclusion that one has to work hard to become a genuine leader and master the skill of making effective decisions.

Overall, the leader may possess a multitude of different skills and master them perfectly. However, what has so far become transparent is that any leader, regardless of which team he leads, must possess three essential qualities. These qualities are commitment to the common goal, ability to handle and resist stress, and, finally, an ability to make effective decisions. All of the three qualities are most likely to be acquired over a lifetime. The statement below leads to the conclusion that even though some qualities can be innate, most are not the ones that leaders are born with. Hence, this answers an essential question: leadership feature is acquired, and not necessarily inborn.

Due to human nature, we draw conclusions only when life gives us a lesson since the experience of others is not so effective and powerful. Moreover, we often compare our situations with […]

How to write an essay about leadership

Leadership essays, or essays where you are asked about your work as a leader in your school or community, are not as common as you might imagine. Given all of the emphasis schools and clubs put on leadership roles and titles, essays asking students to dive deeply into this work are actually pretty rare in college applications. That said, it is important to consider leadership very broadly! You do not need to be the President or Founder of a club to write an effective essay for one of these prompts. In fact, sometimes the less common considerations and definitions of “leadership” can make for more compelling essays.

Example Leadership Essay Questions:

  • U of California: Describe an example of your leadership and a way that you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes, or contributed to group efforts over time.
  • U of Texas: How do you show leadership in your life? How do you see yourself being a leader at UT Austin?

LET'S BREAK DOWN THE ESSENTIAL POINTS YOU NEED TO HIT WHEN RESPONDING TO THIS SUPPLEMENT:

Leadership is more than titles – it is important, when you consider questions like these, that you reflect on activities where you have contributed to an accomplishment and learned something (about yourself, about your community). In fact, it would be a more powerful essay to reflect on a leadership contribution that was not connected to a title of leadership, but where you learned something important, than to reflect upon your activity where your leadership title is big “in name only.”

Sometimes leadership happens within your family – you do not need to limit your focus to leadership that happens during your school day.

You can consider this essay happening in two distinct ways: narrative structure – where you present a challenge you faced in a leadership role, actions you did that had an impact, and lessons you learned (skills you gained); OR montage structure – where you take on two different activities that both taught you a common lesson about leadership. Don’t muddle these together! Decide whether you want to write linearly (and chronologically in time) about one activity or if you want to write non-linearly about one leadership lesson.

THINGS TO AVOID:

Try to stay away from topics where your leadership takes the reader on a familiar journey. If you want to write about your leadership on an athletic team, that is wonderful, but try to avoid an essay about how your leadership of your team during The Big Game contributed to (winning/losing) The Big Game and the team becoming closer and being “one-strong-team.” Does that feel familiar to you? That’s because college admissions folks will have read thousands of essays that tell this type of story. If you select a common team to lead, take your essay in an uncommon direction.

Avoid lengthy introductions that take away from your word count and don’t actually support your essay response.

Avoid overemphasis on one aspect that detracts from your ability to talk about the other aspects of your story. In other words, if you spend half of your words outlining the challenge you faced, you only have ¼ of the remaining words to discuss your actions and ¼ to discuss the lessons you learned. This is not a good balance!

ADDITIONAL TIPS AND TRICKS:

  • What did you do?
  • What problems did you solve?
  • What lessons did you learn?
  • What impact did you have?
  • How have you applied these lessons?

Answering these questions (and in this order) actually builds you an outline for this essay!

Do you have an extracurricular activity where the character count really limits you in terms of describing your work and impact? Consider using this essay to further highlight your contributions!

Do you have an extracurricular activity that speaks directly toward your intended major or field of study? This might be a great time to make your application stand out by sharing your leadership and contributions to this field! What problems have you solved? How can you use this prompt to share these solutions?

500 Words Essay on What Are the Qualities of a Good Leader

Leadership is a multifaceted concept that has been studied and analyzed extensively. A good leader is not defined by a single quality, but by a combination of several attributes that enable them to guide, inspire, and influence others effectively. Understanding these qualities can help individuals develop their leadership skills and contribute to their teams, organizations, or societies more effectively.

One of the most important qualities of a good leader is emotional intelligence. This involves the ability to understand and manage one’s own emotions, as well as the emotions of others. Leaders with high emotional intelligence can empathize with their team members, which helps in building trust and fostering a positive working environment. They are also better equipped to handle stress, conflict, and change.

Good leaders are visionary. They have a clear, inspiring, and ambitious vision for the future. They are able to articulate this vision in a way that is compelling and engaging, inspiring others to share in it. Visionary leaders are also strategic thinkers, able to anticipate future challenges and opportunities, and plan accordingly.

Resilience is a key quality of a good leader. The path to success is often fraught with setbacks and failures. Resilient leaders are able to navigate these challenges with grace and tenacity, learning from their mistakes and using them as opportunities for growth. They also help their team members to develop resilience, fostering a culture of perseverance and adaptability.

Communication Skills

In conclusion, the qualities of a good leader are diverse and interconnected. Emotional intelligence, integrity, visionary thinking, resilience, and effective communication are all crucial. However, it is important to note that leadership is not a static concept. It evolves with time and context, and so too should our understanding of what makes a good leader. As future leaders, it is our responsibility to continually develop these qualities within ourselves and strive to embody them in our actions and interactions.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

When crafting a standout leadership essay, the first step is to understand the prompt or instructions given thoroughly. Whether you’re writing a college application essay, a scholarship essay, or a general essay on leadership, it’s crucial to analyze the prompt and identify the key points and requirements.

What exactly are the admissions officers or evaluators looking for? Are they interested in your leadership abilities, experiences in a leadership position, or your idea of leadership in general? Carefully dissecting the prompt will help you determine the focus of your essay and ensure that you address all the necessary elements.

Once you have a solid grasp of the prompt, it’s time to start brainstorming ideas. What are the most significant leadership roles you’ve held? What examples of leadership best showcase your kind of leadership and leadership style? Jot down any relevant experiences, skills, or insights you can potentially incorporate into your essay.

Step 2: Research and Preparation

With the prompt in mind, it’s time to dive into your research and preparation. Start by gathering relevant information and sources to help you build a strong foundation for your essay. This might include academic articles on leadership and management, biographies of influential leaders, or even interviews with team members who have witnessed your good leadership in action.

Consider conducting your interviews or surveys to gain first-hand insights into your leadership abilities. Talking to members of the team you’ve led or colleagues who have observed your ways of leading can provide valuable perspectives that you can weave into your essay.

As you gather your research, begin organizing and outlining your essay. This will help you structure your thoughts and ensure that your essay flows logically from one point to the next. Consider the key elements of a well-structured leadership essay: the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion.

Step 3: Structure of a Leadership Essay

The introduction of your leadership essay is your chance to hook the reader and set the tone for the rest of your writing. It’s important to start strong and grab the reader’s attention from the first sentence.

One effective way to begin is with a compelling hook. This could be a thought-provoking quote about leadership, an anecdote that illustrates your unique leadership style, or a startling statistic highlighting the importance of good leadership. The goal is to pique the reader’s interest and make them eager to learn more about your perspective on leadership.

After the hook, you’ll want to provide some background information on leadership. This could include a brief overview of the concept of leadership, the key traits of a leader, or the significance of leadership and management in various contexts. Aim to give the reader a solid foundation for understanding the core themes and ideas you’ll explore in your essay.

Finally, you’ll want to introduce your thesis statement. This single sentence should clearly articulate your essay’s central message or argument, setting the stage for the rest of your writing. Your thesis should reflect your unique idea of leadership and the specific leadership abilities or experiences you plan to highlight.

The body of your leadership essay is where you’ll explore your examples of leadership and leadership experiences in more detail. Each body paragraph should focus on a specific aspect of your kind of leadership, using concrete examples to support your claims.

Begin each paragraph with a clear topic sentence introducing the main idea or argument you’ll explore. From there, use vivid details, anecdotes, and evidence to paint a picture of your leadership style in action.

For instance, you might dedicate a paragraph to discussing when you had to lead a group and inspire others to achieve a common goal. Describe the situation, the challenges you faced, the actions you took, and the outcomes you achieved. This will demonstrate your leadership abilities and give the reader a deeper understanding of what your leadership means.

Another body paragraph might explore the leadership theories or styles that have influenced your own kind of leader. How have these ideas shaped your approach to problem-solving and decision-making? What examples of leadership can you draw upon to illustrate these principles in practice?

Throughout your body paragraphs, maintain a clear and logical flow. Use smooth transitions to guide the reader from one idea to the next and ensure that each paragraph builds upon the previous one to create a cohesive and compelling narrative.

The conclusion of your leadership essay is your final opportunity to leave a lasting impression on the reader. Here, you’ll want to synthesize the key points of your essay and reinforce the significance of your leadership in essential experiences.

Begin by freshly restating your thesis statement , reminding the reader of the central message or argument you’ve been exploring. This helps to bring your essay full circle and solidify the main takeaway for the reader.

Next, summarize the most important examples of leadership and leadership abilities you’ve discussed throughout your essay. Highlight the key lessons you’ve learned and how your idea of leadership has evolved. This demonstrates your leadership ability and commitment to continuous growth and improvement.

Finally, conclude your essay by reflecting on the broader importance of good leadership. How do your personal experiences and insights relate to the larger concept of leadership? Why is it crucial for individuals to develop strong leadership skills to inspire people and accomplish the task? By connecting your essay to a larger societal or global context, you’ll leave the reader with a deeper appreciation for the value of leadership.

3 Fundamental Qualities of a Successful School Leader

essay on leadership qualities in school

A great principal is remembered with fondness and respect. Yet too often, teachers can regale others with stories of principal mistakes and missteps, laced a tinge of disrespect and a headshake. Why do some teachers think about their principals that way? Most leaders are taught, in leadership preparation programs, to standards written in 2008 called ISLLC Standards . Although a newer set of leadership standards were written, in New York, as in other states, the standards for principals remains based upon these 2008 standards.

School Leadership Skills

As spring flowers struggle to pop up through the thawing ground, principals everywhere are evaluating teachers and reflecting on their role in the evaluation process. Superintendents and other central office personnel do the same as they attend to the evaluations of their principals. The process of evaluation is not as colorful, nor as exciting as a crocus popping through the snow. It is often is felt as a burden, a task to complete and move off the “to do” list.

But standards, like those used to guide evaluations, can inform and guide actions and help nurture growth and develop potential. The evaluation of teachers and principals became a hot button issue when they were measured, albeit in part, by the achievement of the students in their charge. Although in some way that can and should be one measure, it became a huge distraction from the more valuable tool, the standards, that could serve to remind and guide.

A successful leader, according the 2008 ISLLC Standards , is one who promotes the success of every student by:

  • facilitating the development, articulation, implementation, and stewardship of a vision of learning that is shared and supported by all stakeholders
  • advocating, nurturing, and sustaining a school culture and instructional program conducive to student learning and staff professional growth
  • ensuring management of the organization, operation, and resources for a safe, efficient, and effective learning environment.
  • collaborating with faculty and community members, responding to diverse community interests and needs, and mobilizing community resources.
  • acting with integrity, fairness, and in an ethical manner.
  • understanding, responding to, and influencing the political, social, economic, legal, and cultural context.

Clearly an enormous responsibility, yet to promote is not to be responsible for accomplishing any of these 6 standards. Most, however, interpret the standards as setting the finish line to be reached. There is a central theme that can be extracted, and most certainly would be found as the fundamental attributes of those principals remembered with fondness and respect. They are, without a doubt, intelligence, heart, and courage.

All who have stepped into the role of principal have intelligence. They have studied, received degrees and certifications, learned laws, learned and written policies, observed and evaluated faculty and staff, and made decisions about children and staff. The daily work of a principal surely requires being able to think through problems and maneuver around barriers each day. The use of the heart is where the rubber hits the road. Heart involves passion, a fire that burns of conviction and of calling. But that purposeful passion also offers space for empathy and compassion and love to enter and be part of the leadership process. But, heart without courage is not enough for leadership. It is courage that emboldens action, right action whether popular or not.

We began this piece with the intention of writing about the ISLLC Standards giving a nod to this evaluation season and what is happening within schools and districts at this time of year. As we began to distill and reflect once again on these standards it became clear, as we have written about before, the underlying qualities through which the actions of the standards are performed are these three essential characteristics. We have written about the Wizard of Oz before because the story holds lessons in leadership that we hold dear. Like all stories that endure over time and across generations, they continue to teach and unfold before our eyes and ears if we invite them to do so.

The 3 Leadership Qualities That Endure

In that context, this morning, as we write, we think about Dorothy. She is, after all, the leader. She brings to her role three attributes without which leaders cannot succeed. They are:

  • She knows where she wants to go. She doesn’t lose sense of that regardless of how lost she is or how remote the goal seems.
  • Her insight and support awakens and reveals qualities deeply buried within others. When revealed, those others, who might have been perceived to be liabilities as traveling companions, become strong partners on the journey. She trusts them and herself to know when each is needed and in what way.
  • Through it all, she keeps little Toto with her. When she arrives at the final destination, Toto will also.

Superintendents, principals and teachers, all, can be ultimate capacity builders. They uncover and nurture the capacity of one another to discover hidden talents and develop the skillful use of them. From that work, all benefit. Then, leaders and their teams and students arrive at the place where hope has taken them, the place where the dream becomes real.

Leadership Qualities of Great School Principals

essay on leadership qualities in school

School principals really matter. At New Leaders, our research and results already confirmed this, and when the Wallace Foundation’s “How Principals Affect Students and Schools” report was released a few years ago, it further affirmed the fact that effective principals have a pronounced and positive effect on the schools they lead .

Principals are change agents , challenging the status quo to drive excellence and equity in their school communities—and this change doesn’t happen by accident. The most effective principals have a specific set of qualities, cultivated by their own values as much as their desire to make school an empowering experience for students and adults alike.

The most effective principals have a specific set of qualities, cultivated by their own values as much as their desire to make school an empowering experience for students and adults alike.

In our 20-plus years of work with school principals all over the United States, here are the values that we consistently see in your leadership. As the school year comes to a close, we want to celebrate you for these qualities , and remind you of their importance.

‍ You’re not afraid to have high expectations

Having high expectations means you believe students, teachers, and staff can all learn at exceedingly high levels . And, it’s this belief that instills the confidence and agency needed for everyone in your community to strive for higher levels of performance.

You also know the key to creating a high-expectations culture is more than belief—it’s about engaging in actions that turn that belief into truth. It’s why you take the time to balance those expectations with a healthy dose of compassion, understanding that both students and adults need to have equal parts encouragement and challenge in their learning environments to be the best versions of themselves.

For our full list of actions, visit How Great Principals Drive High Expectations .

You help everyone around you embrace inevitable change

As school leaders, we live by the adage, “the only thing constant is change.” So, why is change so hard to move through—and why can it be so tough to bring others along for the ride? We can blame this one on our brain chemistry. Humans are the most adaptable species on the planet, and yet our brains have also evolved to appreciate —and expect, to a certain extent—certainty.

Effective school leaders do their best to disrupt that certainty, always seeking to be proactive about planning—and leading—through change. You do this through embracing an adaptive leadership approach, where you guide your teams to be problem solvers and embrace collaborative critical thinking.

Take a deep dive into adaptive leadership practices by visiting Adaptive Leadership: How Great School Principals Lead for Change .

‍ You prioritize your own continuous learning, even when you’re low on time

Great school leaders take their professional development seriously. They know, in the words of leadership expert and author John C. Maxwell, that “good leaders are always good learners.” After all, it’s not only critical to feed your mind for your own personal benefit. It’s also for the success of the teachers, staff, leaders, and students you interact with every day.

It’s not just the quest for additional knowledge that drives you. It’s the consistent opportunities to reflect, re-examine what you’ve learned, and determine if it’s still the right way forward.

For strategies you can use to continue to flex your own learning muscles, visit Everyday Ways K-12 Leaders Can Prioritize Continuous Learning .

You know communication is the foundation of trust and transparency

Of all the qualities that a great leader possesses, very few of them would be able to be realized without a foundation of strong communication. Effective leaders understand that so much of great communication depends on nuance—the style you adopt, the level of transparency you prioritize, and the amount of empathy and inclusivity you infuse. Each of these go a long way towards creating a school environment where voices are heard, connections are forged, and missions are fulfilled.

That’s why you routinely audit your own communication to find ways to improve, and focus on creating a culture of two-way communication . In doing so, you encourage your teams to collaborate and learn from one another rather than work in silos.

‍ You’re continuously adding to your “resilience bank”

We don’t need to tell you that leading a school can be stressful at times. Whether you’re dealing with large-scale change management or simply absorbing the day-to-day experiences and exasperations of your school community, there’s an important characteristic that gives you the ability to lead through all of it: resilience. Leaders like you understand that personal resilience is like a bank account —one that you need to make small yet regular deposits into. Keeping your resilience bank full is what helps you better respond to adversity

To do this, great leaders understand that while they may not have much control about the nature and intensity of the adversity that they confront, they do have a choice in how they interpret it. It’s about shifting to a mindset of realistic optimism —where you not only seek to understand what’s going on, but you believe you can move forward despite the constraints.

For the days you might find your resilience is a bit lower than you’d like, visit Six Traits of Highly Resilient K-12 Education Leaders .

You’re the data champion for your school

Data is everywhere in our schools . And with data comes equal parts opportunity and challenge. Just because schools have data doesn’t mean they know how to use it to drive improved outcomes. Great school leaders are aware of this, and they take their role of “Chief Data Officer” very seriously.

Your primary responsibility as your school’s data champion is to make sure the right information is collected, reviewed, and acted upon based on strategic goals. This begins with ensuring teachers and staff have access to the right professional development that can help them feel more comfortable with using data. You also know that understanding data has benefits for your larger school community, especially being able to connect and collaborate with parents and families .

Learn insights for continued data literacy by visiting How the Best K-12 Education Leaders Build Data Literacy .

You elevate and empower others to be leaders

Truly great leaders believe in building up the leadership of those around them by sharing knowledge freely, charting a path forward, and leading by example. Consider the leaders who have influenced you. If they had kept all they had learned to themselves, would they have had the effect on you and so many others?

You know that leadership is possible regardless of a title—all that’s needed is a desire to lead and a love for engaging others in your vision. When teachers and staff feel like they’re heard and seen, students feel like they have a voice , and families can be co-creators in their child’s educational journey. It's the first step toward sparking an interest in leadership.

Leaders who want to empower others do so because they undoubtedly remember how it felt to know that someone saw leadership qualities in them that they hadn’t recognized in themselves. Now, you get to do the same for the aspiring principals and teacher leaders in your school. That’s a great feeling.

Take a look at other ways to continue to help others see their leadership qualities by visiting How Great Leaders Pave the Way for Other Leaders .

You know joy is the foundation of teaching and learning

Joy might be the last quality on this list, but as school leaders, it’s actually one of our biggest goals. We want our learning and teaching environments to be joyful and inclusive because we know that when joy is coupled with knowledge and exploration, there’s no feeling like it.

Cultivating this kind of deep happiness requires us to build that same kind of joy for ourselves. Not only does joy remind us of why we’ve chosen to do this work in the first place, but it can also be a balm for the challenging days. Whether it’s working to keep cultural identity and belonging at the forefront of what we do, creating safe spaces that fuel learning experiences, or simply taking the time to have fun and celebrate both in and out of school, you know that joy is really emotional resilience in disguise.

For more insights on how to lead with joy, visit Why (and How) Great K-12 Leaders Prioritize Joy in Schools .

Your leadership qualities = transformational experiences

In celebrating the exceptional qualities of school principals, we can recognize the transformative impact they have on their communities. Your leadership goes beyond administrative duties, fostering environments where high expectations, continuous learning, and resilience are woven into the everyday fabric of school life.

We know you’re not typically into accolades, but you need to be honored. Your growth, adaptability, and joyful leadership ensures that both students and educators reach their full potential—leadership that has a ripple effect for your school.

Effective Leadership: Traits and Behaviors Essay

  • To find inspiration for your paper and overcome writer’s block
  • As a source of information (ensure proper referencing)
  • As a template for you assignment

Effective leadership is usually associated with various traits and behaviors identified in a person. There are many theories on leadership suggesting different traits, but one of the most popular of them, The Five Practices model, identifies the following significant components: modeling the way, inspiring a shared vision, challenging the process, enabling others to act, and encouraging the heart (Caza & Posner, 2018). Thus, to model the way means to engage in the behavior a leader wants from their followers. Inspiring a shared vision stands for being future-oriented, emotionally engaging followers to achieve a clear vision that has been articulated beforehand. Then, challenging the process means that “leaders are more successful when they are able to embrace and promote change” (Caza & Posner, 2018, p. 127). Finally, enabling others to act means building followers’ competence and confidence, fostering collaborative relationships, and encouraging the heart means recognizing the socio-emotional needs of one’s followers. A person with all the traits described above can become an effective leader.

Identifying such a person, however, can be a challenging task. There is a vast number of leadership perspectives, and all of them provide a different viewpoint on what a true leader should look like (Mango, 2018). Furthermore, even a single theory may contain controversies or describe several separate approaches. Researchers have identified a leader prototype as an “abstract conception of the most representative member or most widely shared features of a given cognitive category” (as cited in Jiang et al., 2019, p. 674). Therefore, when hiring a leadership talent, one should establish what leadership traits they want to see in their future employee and conduct a practical evaluation of each candidate to analyze their potential to become an effective leader.

The Most Important Leadership Competencies, According to Leaders Around the World

  • Sunnie Giles

essay on leadership qualities in school

They’re all hard to improve because they run counter to our instincts.

Research over the past few decades has shown us that the most important leadership qualities are centered around soft skills and emotional intelligence. But do these skills point to deeper competencies? A survey of 195 leaders from more than 30 global organizations suggests that there are five major themes of competencies that strong leaders exhibit:

  • High ethical standards and providing a safe environment
  • Empowering individuals to self-organize
  • Promoting connection and belonging among employees
  • Open to new ideas and experimentation
  • Committed to the professional and intellectual growth of employees

While many of these competencies may seem obvious, they are difficult for leaders to master because to do so would require them to act against their nature. Individuals are not hardwired to relinquish control or be open to small failures. The ability to actively improve these competencies should be a priority for leaders.

What makes an effective leader? This question is a focus of my research as an organizational scientist, executive coach, and leadership development consultant. Looking for answers, I recently completed the first round of a study of 195 leaders in 15 countries over 30 global organizations. Participants were asked to choose the 15 most important leadership competencies from a list of 74. I’ve grouped the top ones into five major themes that suggest a set of priorities for leaders and leadership development programs. While some may not surprise you, they’re all difficult to master, in part because improving them requires acting against our nature.

How to Build a Strong Leadership Team at School

Teams need trust, transparency, and an investment in leadership development in order to thrive.

Staff meeting

Building a strong leadership team is crucial for any school’s success. A cohesive leadership team not only steers the school toward its academic goals but also fosters teamwork and an enhanced culture of trust and transparency among everyone in the learning environment.

I used to believe that I could do it all solo. But in my journey as a leader, I’ve learned the power of collaboration —the importance of fostering a supportive team.

Here are three powerful strategies for building such a team in your school.

1. Cultivate a Culture of Trust and Transparency

Trust and transparency form the foundation of any successful team, especially in schools. I’ve experienced how these qualities facilitate open communication and a feeling of security among staff and students, which reassures and boosts their confidence. This reassurance trickles down to teachers, who are more willing to take risks and innovate, leading to improved student outcomes.

When school leaders trust each other, they collaborate effectively, share ideas freely, and support one another through challenges. To cultivate these qualities among your team, hold regular leadership meetings and encourage open dialogue. I achieved this through morning huddles, which are brief, are focused (no longer than 30 minutes), and encourage transparent communication. Team members voice their opinions, share updates, and discuss concerns—and I model transparency by sharing my successes and failures, so that we all learn from experience.

You can also demonstrate your decision-making processes and communication by being open about your intentions and reasoning and helping your team understand your “why.” One effective method I’ve used is “talk time versus go time,” which allows me, the leader, to gain valuable feedback from stakeholder groups during talk time. Once that feedback is gathered, it is go time. Regular feedback helps leaders identify areas for improvement and fosters a culture of continuous development. The more often this is practiced, the greater the sense of shared responsibility and accountability.

2. Foster Diverse and Inclusive Leadership

Diversity and inclusion are critical components of a strong leadership team. A diverse team brings a variety of perspectives and ideas, leading to more innovative solutions and better decision-making, benefiting the entire school.

Encourage staff from various backgrounds to participate in leadership discussions and decision-making processes. Ensure that all voices are heard and valued. Organize events celebrating the diverse cultures represented in your school community, such as cultural heritage days and international food fairs. These events foster a sense of belonging and educate the school community about different cultures and traditions.

You should also provide diversity, equity, and inclusion training for all leaders. These learning opportunities help them understand the importance of diversity and equip them with skills to create an inclusive environment. Encourage leaders in your community to celebrate colleagues’ diverse backgrounds and experiences through team-building activities, cultural events, and recognition programs.

As a former school and current district leader, I encouraged participation in our district and campus improvement teams, which included members from diverse backgrounds, such as teachers, parents, and community members. Variety ensures that all perspectives are represented and valued in discussions and decision-making processes. Incorporating these different viewpoints creates a more inclusive, effective environment that benefits our entire school and district community.

I prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion training for all leaders through the lens of what it means to be an equity leader. An equity leader promotes fairness and inclusivity, ensuring that all students have resources and opportunities to succeed.

3. Invest in Leadership Development

One way I invest in our network of school leadership development is through our annual leadership retreat, which combines team-building activities, fun events, and learning opportunities. Leadership development helps leaders enhance their skills, stay updated with educational trends, and adapt to changing environments. I implement continuous learning opportunities by offering various professional development (PD) activities, such as workshops, seminars, and opportunities to attend conferences. Supporting PD shows a commitment to teachers’ growth and encourages them to bring new ideas and best practices back to their school.

Additionally, I develop internal training programs focused on essential leadership skills such as strategic thinking, conflict resolution, and emotional intelligence. These programs are tailored to address the unique challenges of school leadership, ensuring that they’re relevant and practical. I empower leaders to take calculated risks and innovate within their roles. Doing so supports their personal growth and drives the school toward new opportunities and improvements in educational practices. Creating “innovation hubs” within the school where staff can experiment with new teaching methods or administrative processes fosters a culture of continuous improvement and encourages everyone to contribute to the school’s growth and success.

Tips for Implementation

Implementing these strategies involves practical steps that integrate seamlessly into daily operations. Schedule regular huddle meetings that emphasize open communication. Use them not only for updates but also as a forum for discussing challenges and brainstorming solutions collaboratively.

In addition to implementing the events and procedures noted above regarding diversity and inclusion, develop mentorship programs where experienced staff can support and guide newer or underrepresented staff members.

For leadership development, identify key skill gaps within your team, and create personalized development plans and innovation hubs to facilitate experimentation.

Making an Impact

Building a strong leadership team requires deliberate, sustained effort. By cultivating a culture of trust and transparency, fostering diverse and inclusive leadership, and investing in leadership development, you can create a resilient, innovative team that can drive your school to new heights.

Reflecting on my own journey, I realize the immense value of a supportive leadership team. An “I can do it all” mentality can be isolating and unsustainable. Embracing the above strategies will enhance your team’s effectiveness and create a positive and dynamic school culture. Building a strong leadership team is an ongoing process that requires commitment, patience, and a willingness to adapt and evolve.

Writing a Powerful Leadership/Achievement Essay [Sample Essay]

Writing a Powerful Leadership/Achievement Essay

Essays that ask you to write about significant achievements fall under the category of

what are known as behavioral or experiential questions . The basic assumption behind these questions is that past behavior is a great predictor of future behavior . They are all varieties on the theme of “Tell us about a time when you…” These questions are meant to take the measure of your managerial potential.

Let’s look at how one candidate effectively addressed this essay question from  Stanford GSB  (*this question is not from the current application):

Tell us about a time when you made a lasting impact on your organization.

This writer avoids writing about leadership in any generic way and zeroes in on the specific aspects of his contributions and their impact:

Leadership essay example: The Change Agent

When I was invited to become the Vice President and General Manager at Third Way Associates (TWA)* two years ago, the company was in financial and administrative disorder. Employee retention was poor, and TWA took too long to pay vendors because of poor communication and accounting processes. Cash flow was managed based on immediate needs rather than by the logic of budgets planned by project and city. Sloppy expense reports that were turned in with no receipts were reimbursed to employees.

TWA founders Scott W ____ and Glenn L ____ had good intentions, but spent most of their time selling sponsorships and getting new clients rather than directing and managing the company. As we begin 20XX, TWA is much healthier in every way. Under my direction, vendors are paid in an average of 20 days from date of invoice, instead of 60 days or more. Our cash flow is better administered since I introduced very specific detailed area budgets with over 125 budget lines per city. Because I can give the company founders much better stability and macromanagement vision, the three of us are able to look more to the future rather than simply put out fires.

Despite the difficult economy in 20XX, we not only retained our same clients but also signed several new client agreements for three years or more, including a two-year contract with Big Shoe Company worth $1.3 million. I’ve brought fresh accounts and industries into TWA, including ____ Airlines and Drink Y, among others. Combined, these accounts generated more than $500,000 in 20XX, and we estimate close to $1 million dollars in the following year.

Since my arrival, we have a much wider and broader sales menu which has been crucial to generate more revenue. I’ve expanded our most popular sports events to 25 cities, giving our clients new investment opportunities. These events range from recreational soccer clinic tours to professional soccer games broadcast on TV.

I also expanded our field staff, and at present we have 25 strong and reliable managers who report directly to me from each city. Despite the economy, 20XX was not a bad year for TWA, and this year promises to be even better if we continue our current strategy and continue to work as a team.

Leadership essay analysis

In every paragraph, this writer mentions concrete measures he took to introduce order to a chaotic company that was trying to grow. From instituting budgets with line items, an improved accounts payable system, and recruiting additional big-name accounts, the writer proves how his efforts strengthened the organization.

How can you maximize on your thought leadership experiences?

As you choose among your own experiences as essay material, think about these questions to help you frame answers of substance:

  • What was the obstacle, challenge, or problem that you solved in this accomplishment? A tight client deadline? A complex merger transaction? A new product launch amidst fierce competition?
  • What did you do to rise to the challenge you are writing about? Motivate your team to work overtime? Sell senior management on the deal’s long-term upside? Identify a marketing profile for your product that no competitor can match?
  • What facts demonstrate that your intervention created a happy ending? Did your team submit the project deliverables three days early despite being 20% understaffed? Your client approved the $500 million merger, the largest ever in its industry? Your new product has 20% market share after only one year? What was the impact of your leadership?

Don’t forget about your people leadership skills

What we’ve spoken about until this point revolves mostly on skilled problem-solving, or “thought leadership.” But respected businesspeople need to be equally or even more talented at something we didn’t have a formal name for: people leadership. By effectively leading the thinking of client firms’ problems as well as motivating them to work long hours to develop solutions to these problems and collaborate with clients on implementing them, these businesspeople prove to have what it takes to be exemplary leaders.

So don’t forget to include strong elements of people leadership in your essays. Here are several to keep in mind:

  • Rallying others around a vision. Did you convince your team or group to follow a specific path/solution? How did you do it? Successful clients have talked about handling dissenting opinions diplomatically or presenting their teams’ detailed quantitative evidence for a recommendation. The more you can show that you understood your audience and tailored the content and form of your message to them, the better.
  • Harnessing others’ strengths – and expanding them. Did you provide team members tasks they could handle comfortably based on their capabilities, as well as opportunities to broaden their skills? For example, you may have handed your quant jock teammate the most complicated operations analysis as well as responsibility for leading a key client meeting. In this way, you leverage teammates’ strengths while helping them develop new ones.
  • Getting through tough times. Did you model for your team enviable cool in pressure-cooker situations, maybe helping them keep the big-picture goal in mind or lightening the mood with humor? Did you reward teammates with praise, pizza, or both for working long into the night? Did you pitch in on others’ responsibilities as deadlines loomed? Helping your team handle stress while managing your own is a cornerstone of strong leadership.

Use your words

Another tip: Look for opportunities to incorporate strong verbs that illustrate your strengths in these areas. Good examples of leadership might incorporate several of the following:

  • Establishing a goal or vision
  • Obtaining buy-in
  • Taking responsibility

The old adage, “Show, don’t tell,” remains a classic bit of wisdom in the writing process. Make that a guiding principle not only in your leadership/achievement essays, but throughout your application.

Who is the director of the Secret Service? Kimberly Cheatle has led agency since 2022

A House Republican leader is planning for an oversight hearing with the U.S. Secret Service after President Donald Trump was shot in the ear at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday evening.

Sunday morning the FBI identified Thomas Matthew Crooks as the gunman who opened fire at Trump's rally . The Secret Service reported that the shooter and one rally attendee are dead. Two spectators are critically injured following the shooting.

House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer, R-Kentucky, made the request for a briefing with the Secret Service and said he would call Kimberly Cheatle, the agency's director, to testify at a hearing.

"My prayers are with President Trump and the victims of the assassination attempt at today’s rally in Pennsylvania. I thank the brave Secret Service members who put their lives at risk to protect President Trump and for the American patriots in the audience who helped innocent victims," Comer said in a news release Saturday. "Political violence in all forms is unamerican and unacceptable. There are many questions and Americans demand answers. I have already contacted the Secret Service for a briefing and am also calling on Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to appear for a hearing. The Oversight Committee will send a formal invitation soon.”

So who is Kimberly Cheatle?

Who is in charge of the Secret Service?

Kimberly Cheatle was sworn in as the 27th director of the U.S. Secret Service in September 2022. She was selected by President Joe Biden in August 2022.

Cheatle has served more than 25 years with distinction for the United States Secret Service across a number of leadership roles. She worked on the Vice Presidential Protective Division, and in 2021, Biden awarded Cheatle with a Presidential Rank Award.

What does the director of the Secret Service do?

In Cheatle's role as director of the U.S. Secret Service, she is in charge of executing protection and investigations for the agency.

The workforce is composed of multiple divisions within the Secret Service including Special Agents, Uniformed Division Officers, Technical Law Enforcement Officers and Administrative, Professional and Technical personnel, according to the Secret Service's website .

What did Kimberly Cheatle do before the Secret Service?

Prior to becoming the Secret Service director, Cheatle worked for PepsiCo as the senior director in Global Security, according to her biography with the Secret Service . There, Cheatle oversaw and directed security protocols for the company's facilities in North America.

Cheatle was the agency's assistant director of the Office of Protective Details, prior to joining PepsiCo. She also served as the Special Agent in Charge of the Secret Service's Atlanta Field Office. In that position, she provided oversight for all missions related to investigation, protective intelligence and protective visits in the state of Georgia.

When will the director of the Secret Service testify?

🚨BREAKING🚨 @RepJamesComer has invited U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to testify at a hearing on Monday, July 22. Americans demand answers about the assassination attempt of President Trump. pic.twitter.com/zKia2oIxCf — Oversight Committee (@GOPoversight) July 14, 2024

The hearing is expected to take place July 22, 2024, according to a letter from the Committee on Oversight and Accountability.

When was the Secret Service created?

Established in 1865, the U.S. Secret Service is one of the country's oldest federal law enforcement agencies. The U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division protects the White House Complex and Naval Observatory, according to the Secret Service's website .

One of the newest expansions of the Secret Service's protective missions includes the issuance of Presidential Decision Directives. This established the agency as the lead for coordinating the development and implementation of security plans for National Special Security Events. This covers presidential inaugurations, State of the Union Addresses and other events of national significance.

Why Are There Neo-Nazis on the Streets of Nashville?

A photograph of two men seen from the shoulders down. One is in a police uniform, standing behind the other, who has a tattoo that reads “Proud Boy” on his arm.

By Margaret Renkl

Ms. Renkl is a contributing Opinion writer who covers flora, fauna, politics and culture in the American South. She wrote from Nashville.

I wish I could say I was shocked when neo-Nazis started parading around downtown Nashville last week, wearing shirts emblazoned with swastikas and the words “ Pro-white .” I wish I could say I was shocked when they asked passers-by, “ Are you a Jew? ,” or when they terrified a child , or when they unfurled a hate-filled banner for interstate drivers to see, or when they threatened local businesses with violence . Even on Tuesday night, when they disrupted a meeting of the Metro Council, spouting “antisemitic, homophobic and racist diatribes,” according to the Nashville Scene’s Eli Motycka , I couldn’t say I was surprised.

Just a week earlier, a different group marched on our streets carrying Confederate flags, and in February white supremacists marched here to celebrate “the great white South .” As a blue city in a deep-red state, Nashville has become an appealing target for people who fear diversity. “ Diversity means fewer white people ,” read the fliers that last week’s marchers handed out. “Inclusion means exclusion of white people. Equity means stealing from white people.”

In an irony of timing, “ Dynamite Nashville: Unmasking the FBI, the KKK, and the Bombers Beyond Their Control ,” a new book by the Nashville historian Betsy T. Phillips, was published on the same day that white supremacists harassed Nashville’s Metro Council. The book offers a necessary reminder of the world these neo-Nazis are nostalgic for.

“Dynamite Nashville” is an attempt to find out who was behind three unsolved Nashville bombings of the early civil rights era: at the Hattie Cotton School in 1957, the Jewish Community Center in 1958 and the home of Z. Alexander Looby, a Black civil rights attorney and Nashville City Council member, in 1960. No one was ever charged for the crimes.

Hattie Cotton was bombed the night after a Black child enrolled in the previously all-white school. The Jewish Community Center was bombed for all the usual reasons of antisemitism but also, Ms. Phillips convincingly argues, because local white supremacists believed that Black Southerners would have stayed happily in their segregated places if Jewish people hadn’t put ideas of freedom in their heads. Mr. Looby’s house was bombed in part because he was the attorney at the heart of virtually every civil rights lawsuit in Tennessee. These were typical targets for racist terrorists determined to stop the world from changing.

Though I know Ms. Phillips, as well as the historical context of the bombings she investigates, this book astonished me.
