Sailing the Oceans Blue

This boat has been a legend since the day it was launched —upside down. The keel was so deep it could not be moved in the usual way; the boat was so stable the builders were confident it would right itself. It did and, in doing so, soaked the onlookers who had come to marvel.

Phocea is a very serious yacht. It was designed to be raced single-handed across the Atlantic and is the largest boat ever to be sailed by one person. It is the world's fastest 246-foot monohull sailing boat and the world's largest private sailing yacht. Long and narrow, it slices through the water like an arrow—17 knots is usual, 20 knots is frequent, and it has done 30.5 knots.

It is beautiful for the same reasons that it sails well. "The view from the helm is like being in a cathedral," says owner Mouna Ayoub. "The proportions are right even when it's lying at anchor. This yacht has a pedigree: Any refit would have to recognize the racing spirit that is its soul."

Ayoub allows the world to know her for her collection of couture clothes, her jewels and the parties where she wears them. What the world rarely knows about is her profound love for her family and her need for privacy after an overpublicized divorce. The yacht represents time with her family and privacy for them all.

She can do a very stylish disappearing act. When the gypsy spirit prompts, Ayoub is off to sea, the clothes and the jewelry going with her. Good storage was high on the agenda, and it would be as meticulously crafted as the rest of the boat. The Lürssen shipyard, near Bremen, did the refit; naval architect Butch Dalrymple-Smith advised; London-based Tim Heywood remodeled the exteriors; Jrg Beiderbeck in Bremen decorated the interiors; Tim Gosling, of David Linley Co. in London, designed fine marquetry furniture.

They were all thrust into the whirlwind that is her life. "Working with Mouna is unpredictable but fun," says Gosling. "I would go down to the boat for the day, all the phones would be ringing, Mouna would be on her way to a party and I would tag along. Once I found myself on the dance floor of a nightclub, desperate to discuss the very complicated devices for securing furniture to the floor. She nearly clobbered me with her diamond."

Everyone on the refit team kept in mind that this is a French boat with a French history, designed in 1976 by renowned naval architect Michel Bigoin in Marseilles. Alas, after its first single-handed transatlantic race, size restrictions were imposed on most competitions.

Bernard Tapie, chairman of the soccer club Olympique de Marseilles, was the next owner. He asked Bigoin to lengthen the hull, raise the masts, increase the sail area and install a hydraulic system for trimming the sails. He also came up with the name Phocea , after the proud Phocaean people who settled Marseilles.

Ayoub had seen the yacht under his ownership and never forgot it, so when circumstances forced Tapie to sell it, she saw her chance. "I wanted a boat, but it had to be a sailing boat," she says. "Motorboats look as though you could iron your clothes with them. They're too high; it's like being in a tall building. If you want to swim, you have to go down three stories. On Phocea you could dive off the deck.

"What I love is the silence of sailing, that moment when you're out of harbor, the engine is turned off, and there's only the wind," continues Ayoub. "A motorboat is like a motorcycle—all that noise, all that bouncing around. I would never own one. Everything about sailing appeals to me."

The refit began small, became big, until everything was stripped out and restored or created anew. It took two years, and throughout that time she approved every detail, sometimes several times over.

"We redesigned the gym seven times," says Beiderbeck. "Everything is to a high standard, even the sauna and the hair salon. Now we can laugh about it—she pushed us to do things we didn't realize we could do. For example, floors in the saloon have a gentle curve because the area was originally an open deck. Each piece of the parquetry had to be cut to accommodate that curve.

"Also, the saloon's low silhouette demands low ceilings; there's little space for the mechanics," Beiderbeck points out. "People think boats represent escape and that there should be fantasy interiors. In fact, it's the opposite. Everything must be very disciplined to work in small spaces."

Phocea is a vessel equally suited to peaceful solitude or big-time parties.

Dalrymple-Smith also knew the problems of fitting in essentials. "We needed a secondary means of escape," he says. "The emergency hatch is above the bathroom in the master stateroom, so the whitemarble shower has a golden ladder to match the other fittings. My role was to be the conscience of the project, to remind everyone of the regulations."

The interiors have paneling and rich but simple surfaces, a good background for the star pieces of furniture designed by Gosling. "Air-conditioning makes it possible to have intricate marquetry at sea," he says. "We could do complicated inlays, interpreting Boulle, in wood rather than metal that would corrode. I wanted to convey the feeling of being inside a beautifully made cigar box—but more feminine."

"It wouldn't worry me if it did look masculine," says Ayoub, "that suits my tastes exactly. For a house or for a yacht, decoration is not my goal. I don't want to have things I don't need, I prefer things to be practical and businesslike. I don't like curtains and fabrics—I love marquetry and wood."

All of the paneling is removable for maintenance, because Ayoub once had a boat where they couldn't change a lightbulb without tearing the ceiling apart. At the shipyard she asked them to take the paneling off so she could check everything. She was impressed.

"That was a wonderful sight," she recalls. "I would be just as happy to live with the panels off. Couture clothes make you finicky. The inside of a well-made jacket should be as beautiful as the outside; the construction of a boat should be as beautiful as the final finish. This is a couture boat."

The galley is equipped for large numbers—Ayoub has had receptions for 500 people and dinners for 150 with small tables set up all over the boat.

As a vessel equally suited to peaceful solitude or big-time parties, it is a yacht of many moods. As the captain, Mark Coxon, says, "Designers can make fast boats, but, like Formula One race cars, speed is all they do. You can't live on them. Phocea also has all the comforts and possibilities of a five-star hotel."

The yacht, which can be chartered through Nigel Burgess Ltd. in London, cruises the Mediterranean for six months, the Caribbean for four months, then undergoes two months of maintenance. Details are constantly being refined, and storage is always being added.

When Phocea returns to harbor in Marseilles, there is excitement ashore: The yacht is part of the heritage of the city, and locals are proud.

It is a slow and stately return, "a bit like parking a very large car in the garage," says the captain, "but at sea and under sail this boat really performs. She seems caught up in an irresistible momentum. The boat can still be sailed single-handed; the feeling for one person to be in control of that kind of power is really something."

"This boat is special," says Mouna Ayoub. "The most important thing was to be true to the original racing design. We haven't raced it, but it would be possible if we took out all the furniture and paneling to make it lighter. Phocea was born to race. I never forget that."

A FRESH WAVE OF DESIGN – TIM GOSLING SUPER YACHTS

Exquisite interiors and bespoke furniture should not just be for land. Innovator and design extraordinaire Tim Gosling has reinvigorated the superyacht market, pushing boundaries and creating high-quality and luxurious pieces of furniture. Boasting an impressive portfolio of clients, Gosling has created a new wave of design taking his iconic styles to the open seas.

Renowned for his unique designs and passion for traditional and timeless craftsmanship, Gosling has become an icon within the superyacht industry. His experimental work and desire for pushing the technical boundaries of materials have made him one of the best. When Gosling first started working on yachts, more than a decade ago, he noticed there was a lack of choice in the market for high-quality and bespoke exterior furniture. Working alongside clients, Gosling is able to create a synergy between the sleek exterior and interior by featuring modern carbon fibre pieces with compound curves. Having had the pleasure of working on many sensational superyachts across the world, such as the world-famous Phocea, the largest sailing boat ever made before 2004, Goslings’ passion has continued to ignite.

Deck Lounger

“I have been lucky enough to create work for a range of wonderful superyachts. Some I’m allowed to talk about, but some have to remain in the world of complete privacy and mystery.”

The New Era of Yacht Furniture

In 2013, the highly anticipated Gosling Marine collection was launched. This state-of-the-art collection was the first-ever carbon-fibre range of deck furniture, specifically made for luxurious superyachts. The modern yet timeless designs quickly became a quintessential part of Goslings’ work. Combining trademark ‘white’ carbon fibre with traditional teak, the Gosling Marine collection has been built to last and withstands the elements when at sea. Featuring a unique strength to weight ratio, low maintenance and aftercare, and resistance to corrosion, carbon fibre makes it the ideal material for yacht furniture. Gosling has combined his knowledge of traditional cabinet-making techniques with modern materials, putting his own twist on yacht furniture.

From the iconic lounge tub chair that has become synonymous with the Gosling brand to elegant sun loungers with luxurious teak finishes, our furniture can help to add a stylish and timeless statement to any boat.

Goslings Yacht Design Principles

Light is always at the heart of every Gosling interior, due to its ability to ooze sophistication and transform a space. The idea of white with wood is the key fundamental design aspect of the Gosling Marine collection. By creating the perfect mix between the white and sleek wood, it helps to bring the yacht to life and avoid the environment becoming overly clinical. The collection instead amalgamates the traditional teak with the modern carbon fibre, to create a tactile piece of timeless furniture.

Although air conditioning may be tempting, especially when cruising around exotic islands and through the glistening turquoise Mediterranean sea; it can make the edges of your room dirty. Gosling recommends avoiding putting white carpet up to the edge. Instead, opt for a different hue or to leave an edging of teak.

Gosling is passionate about not simply furnishing a yacht, but transforming it into an idyllic haven perfect for a luxurious getaway. One way in which a room can be transformed is by the use of mirrors. Glass by nature has the ability to amplify the natural and artificial light, creating a larger opulent and indulgent area perfect for relaxing and dining.

Deco Dining Carver

‘In a bespoke world where anything is possible, clients are becoming more adventurous and want to create a truly unique space and new style of boat living.’

A Look At Lady S

One of the most renowned yacht designs recognised worldwide is the beautiful Lady S. At 93m and 2.999 GT, she is one of the largest yachts to ever be launched at the Kaag yard, by Feadship Royan Van Lent. With a passionate team behind her design, the naval architecture was by De Voogt, her exquisite exterior was designed by Michael Leach and his team and the interior designs were crafted by Pascale Reymond and Andrew Langton, all some of the most memorable names in the industry.

With a glorious deck featuring a pool, jacuzzi, waterfall and giant TV screen, she offers endless luxury and comfort to all onboard. We are proud that she also carries a bespoke collection of Gosling furniture, including carbon fibre deck chairs, adding that extra touch of class.

Not only is she extraordinary to look at, but she features some incredible technology including being the first superyacht with an IMAX private theatre on board, with a 6m curved cinema screen and seating over the height of two decks.

She’s exclusively for charter through Edmiston and Robert Shepherd and she comes with a personalised burgundy red Rolls Royce Cullinan.

A Recognised Passion

Over the years, Gosling has had the pleasure of working on numerous high-end superyachts. He has transported his passion for bespoke furniture and intricate interiors to the open sea and has become renowned within the industry. Nowadays, he simply needs no introduction. The annual Monaco Yacht Show is one of the most iconic shows within the marine world, helping showcase the best of the best when it comes to superyachts by bringing together enthusiasts all over the world. From shipyards to designers and craftsmen, all have the chance to showcase their skills in the most idyllic of settings. As a repeat prestigious judge at the event, Tim is able to use his prowess to judge the creme de la creme of superyachts. In recent years, yacht design and interiors have transformed from simply replicating domestic interiors into a fluent design that is specific to the curves and waterline. Good yacht interior design should connect you to the sea and islands, let you embody the experience and revel in it.

‘Yachts, and specifically superyachts, are so exciting to me because they are literally the closest thing we get to creating a space and a structure that responds to the outside environment’.

Take a deep dive into a breathtaking indoor swimming pool, where luxury meets tranquility. A stunning collaboration between Gosling Design, @garnett.architecture and @isglimited

Phocea (yacht)

From wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

phocea yacht interior

Phocea was a sailing yacht that was built at Toulon, France , by DCAN in 1976. [1] She is 246 feet long (75 meters) and can cruise at 12 knots. [1] Like many yachts, she has undergone a number of refits, a major one having been in 2000 in Germany. [2] She can handle 12 guests supported by a crew of 16 sailors. [2] Phocea is a schooner with four masts. [3] Phocea was originally built for speed, and she crossed the Atlantic in 8 days and achieved speeds of 30 knots under sail. [3] The yacht has also been converted more for luxury and used on the charter market. [3]

The Phocea was the World's largest sailing yacht before the 2004 launching of Athena , by Royal Huisman . She was built at the Toulon Naval Dockyard in 1976 for renowned single-handed yachtsman Alain Colas , who named her Club Méditerranée . Shortly after competing in the Observer Single-Handed Trans-Atlantic Race , she was converted into the charter yacht Club Méditerranée . [4] [5] Later in 1997, she was reffited and renamed La Vie Claire with a new Jorg Biederbeck interior design and a new Tim Heywood exterior design. [6]

The Phocea was partially destroyed by fire on 18 February 2021 and sank the next day. She was anchored in Langkawi archipelago in Malaysia. [7]

In July 1997, Phocea was purchased by Mouna Ayoub and modernized at Lürssen . Whilst retaining her unmistakable identity, she has received major interior and exterior enhancements by British naval architect Butch Dalrymple-Smith. The interiors feature wood panelling and furniture designed by David Linley . The Owner's Suite is situated on the main deck, whilst the VIP guest cabin and four other double cabins, all with full ensuite facilities, are located on the lower deck. She won the 1999 ShowBoats award for best refit.

Ayoub's ex-husband Nasser Al-Rashid partly paid for the $17 million refit of the Phocea with the sale of "The Mouna", a 112 carat (22.4 g) record-breaking diamond. [8]

75m sailing yacht Phocea sinks after fire

The 75 metre sailing yacht Phocea (previously Enigma) has sunk off the coast of Malaysia after the yacht caught fire last week.

Speaking to Agence France-Presse, the Malaysian coastguard confirmed that Phocea sank at around 5am or 6am on February 19.

The yacht, which is the ninth-largest sailing yacht in the world , was filmed on fire in strong wind conditions after the blaze was discovered by a local patrol vessel. It is reported that while the coastguard was able to control the fire, the damage to the hull was too severe and caused the yacht to sink. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The vessel requested the assistance of the Langkawi Maritime Rescue Sub Centre and Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency MMEA which began fighting the fire at around 8.18 am local time.

Kedah and Perlis MMEA director, Maritime First Admiral Mohd Zawawi Abdullah said the wind conditions were “making the operation difficult”.

“The seven crewmen were successfully transferred to KM Tenggol and they are safe and unhurt,” he said in a statement. “No oil spill was reported and we will continue monitoring the situation”.

The 75.12 metre Phocea was first built in 1976 for single-handed yachtsman Alain Colas as Club Mediterranée. In 1986 it was converted into a cruising yacht for French entrepreneur Bernard Tapie.
