Indespensible

I just sailed from Chesapeake Bay to NYC. I don't have AIS on my boat, and was concerned about boat traffic in the C&D canal, the Delware river, and Ambrose channel into the Hudson. I DO HAVE cellular service on my Ipad. We remained within 10 miles of the coastline at all times, and this app identified all the freighters, both near us, and I could also look ahead and behind us. I was then able to hail them and discuss course and direction with them. There were a few times we needed to adjust our course a tiny bit, and avoid issues well in advance. This app was a life saver for our voyage. Even when I upgrade to onboard AIS, I will still use this app to see the freighters that are outside of the VHF line of site range to predict CPA. Thanks Marine Traffic!!!!

Free unlocks expire when app closed

I was looking for an app to track my vehicle shipment. This app does a great job of that and more. There’s a catch for free accounts, however. You get three “past route” and three “vessel info” unlocks before having to register and pay. No problem, I thought. Just want to track one ship over a period of 3-5 days. So day one I unlock the past route and vessel info for my ship. Very cool info! Day two I go to check on the vessel and… I have to use another unlock for both the past route and vessel info. Now day two again, but I closed the app and it wants to use my final unlock for both the route and vessel info. It’s the same ship on the same route. If you’re going to subscribe, this won’t matter to you. If you’re like me and only have a single, one-off use of the app, go for it but don’t close the app! You’ll have to use your limited unlocks again and quickly run out. I hope the app dev will consider allowing each unlock to last for the current sailing of the selected ship instead of what seems to expire as soon as I close the app.

Developer Response ,

Thank you so much for your lovely review. It means a lot to us! Should you have any suggestions on what could be improved, please let us know in our Community Help:https://bit.ly/3qEQGUa Have a great day!

Was good, recent update made it useless.

This app used to be good for what I needed it for, which was seeing the names of ships near me (I work on ships and frequently need to do this for various reasons). Now, the app doesn’t show any vessel names unless you specifically search for a specific vessel, even when the “vessel names” option is checked. Furthermore, the app used to show you a picture of the vessel for free, which is very useful if you have to visit a specific ship and you don’t know what it looks like. Now when you tap on a ship, you don’t even get a picture. So this app is trying to force me to pay for things that it used to do for free, and it still is possible to do for free if I use google or other apps, so there is literally no reason to use this app anymore. On an unrelated note, the old logo was completely fine. The new logo looks nothing like a ship unless you know in advance that it’s trying to look like a ship viewed from the front. Simpler isn’t always better. It’s an app logo, not a company logo. It should quickly convey what the app is for so that it stands out on a page with 27 other app logos.
We are sorry to hear that you feel this way. We always appreciate customers who take the time to give us their feedback and will definitely pass this on to the relevant team for review. If you have any questions, please contact us at https://bit.ly/3dzeALs

Seven bodies have been found after a superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily.

Twenty-two people were on board the vessel named Bayesian when it got into difficulty in the early hours of Monday, with 15 people rescued.

Here's what we know about the sinking of the luxury vessel so far.

Seven people missing after British-flagged yacht capsizes in tornado off coast of Italy

What might have caused the sinking?

The British-flagged luxury vessel, named Bayesian, capsized at around 4.30am local time on Monday morning off Palermo, according to ship-tracking site Marine Traffic.

It sank in as little as 60 seconds with 22 people on board, 12 passengers and a crew of 10, according to the Italian coastguard.

Waterspouts, essentially tornados that form over water, were seen as powerful winds battered the area overnight, local media said.

The yacht may have sunk faster with all the doors open due to the hot weather, Sailing Today magazine editor Sam Jefferson has said.

"I imagine all the doors were open because it was hot, so there were enough hatches and doors open that it filled with water very quickly and sank like that," he said.

Official pictures show air conditioning units in several of the rooms, however, which could counter the suggestion open windows caused the vessel to sink faster.

The huge mast is also likely to have played a role, he added.

What are waterspouts?

Waterspouts typically occur during thunderstorms and can develop very rapidly, within minutes.

Their spin generally reaches wind speeds between 75-200mph, but can reach as high as 300mph.

They can travel at about 10-20mph typically but can reach greater speeds, making them difficult to avoid - especially in something as slow-moving as a yacht.

Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, called the reports of a tornado or waterspout "rare" and "quite alarming".

"The vessel was at anchor in a recognised anchorage," Mr Schanck said.

"Depending on wind direction and the state of the sea, this informs the captain whether it is a safe area to anchor or not. There was nothing that was too concerning, for my eye. All in all, the captain used the information they had to make a safe call."

Who owns the yacht?

The yacht belonged to the family of British tech tycoon Mike Lynch. He was confirmed to have died after rescuers found his body on Thursday. Mr Lynch was on holiday with his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, who is still missing, and his wife Angela Bacares, who was rescued.

Mr Lynch, 59, was known as the " British Bill Gates " and has been in the headlines in recent months over a high-profile fraud case.

In June, a US jury cleared him of all charges, which were related to the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard (HP). The yacht trip is believed to have been a celebration of the end of Mr Lynch's legal troubles.

HP accused him of deliberately overstating the value of the company before it was acquired by the American tech giant.

Mr Lynch was extradited to the US to face trial in May last year and spent 13 months under house arrest in San Francisco as he awaited trial on 17 charges of conspiracy and wire fraud brought by the US Department of Justice - which were later reduced to 15 charges. He always denied any wrongdoing and was acquitted.

Who was on board when the boat sank?

The passengers were largely British and American, with crew members were from New Zealand, South Africa, and Canada.

Charlotte Golunski was among the Britons rescued. Her LinkedIn profile says she is a partner at Mr Lynch's firm Invoke Capital and has worked there since 2012.

Charlotte Golunski

Speaking after the ordeal, Ms Golunski told Italian media that she lost her daughter Sofia for "two seconds" amid the "fury" of the sea but was able to retrieve her. She said she held the infant above the waves until the lifeboat was ready.

"Many people screamed. Luckily the lifeboat inflated and 11 of us were able to get on board," she told ANSA.

The girl's father James Emsley also survived, according to Sicily's civil protection agency.

Also on board were Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of investment bank Morgan Stanley, his wife Judy Bloomer, a top US lawyer Chris Morvillo, who worked on Mr Lynch's criminal case, and his wife Neda Morvillo. Divers confirmed on Thursday that their bodies had been recovered.

The yacht's captain James Cutfield survived, along with South African crew members Leah Randall and Katja Chicken.

Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan chef who was working on the boat, was the first to be found dead, the Italian Coastguard confirmed to Sky News.

During rescue efforts, divers saw "corpses through the portholes" of the wreck as they recovered the body of a man at a depth of 50m (164ft), according to Salvo Cocina, the head of the Civil Protection of Sicily.

What do we know about the vessel?

The Bayesian is owned by a company controlled by Mr Lynch's wife.

It was known for its unusual 72.3m (246ft) single mast - one of the world's tallest made of aluminium - and shared its name with the statistical method Mr Lynch's Autonomy software was based on.

It was built by Italian company Perini Navi in 2008 and last refitted in 2020.

It was listed for rent for up to €195,000 (£166,000) a week, according to online charter sites.

The luxury vessel , which was managed by yachting company Camper & Nicholsons, could accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites.

It won a string of awards for its design, according to online specialist yacht sites.

Mr Schanck, of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, said the vessel would have been equipped with "high standard" life-saving appliances and radio communications.

He added the yacht would have met all international standards and UK Maritime Coastguard Agency regulations before its voyage.

It was previously named Salute, or "health" in Italian, when it flew under a Dutch flag. Its minimalist interior featured light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions on charter sites.

What were its last movements?

The boat left the Sicilian port of Milazzo on 14 August and was last tracked east of Palermo on Sunday evening, with a navigation status of "at anchor", according to vessel tracking site VesselFinder.

The Bayesian previously travelled to other parts of Sicily before its last sighting off the coast of the port of Porticello.

British technology tycoon Mike Lynch is missing after a British-flagged luxury yacht sank in bad weather off the coast of Sicily, sources said. A total of 15 people were rescued from the 55m (180ft) vessel, but another seven are still missing, according to the area's mayor.

A baby, along with its mother, was reportedly among those rescued and taken to hospital, according to Italian news outlet Corriere. Four British passengers, two Americans and a Canadian are said to be missing, Italian news agency Ansa reported. One body has been found, but it is not known what country the person who died is from.

The body, believed to be the vessel's chef, was found near the wreck at a depth of 50m (164ft), fire and rescue services said. A spokesperson for Mr Lynch declined to comment.

Mr Lynch, who founded software giant Autonomy in 1996, was made an OBE for services to enterprise in 2006. Earlier this year he was cleared of conducting a massive fraud relating to a 11-billion-dollar (£8.64 billion) sale to US company Hewlett Packard.

Local media said a fierce storm, including water spouts, battered the area overnight. The superyacht, named Bayesian, capsized at around 5am off Palermo and was flying a British flag, according to ship-tracking site Marine Traffic.

The body was found near the wreck at a depth of 50m (164ft), the fire and rescue services said. The daily Il Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported that the yacht had mostly British passengers on board, but also people from New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Ireland and British-French citizens.

Speaking earlier, Filippo Tripoli, the mayor of Bagheria in Sicily, said: "This morning, off the coast of Santa Flavia, a foreign boat sank due to bad weather, 15 people recovered and seven missing. Already all the police forces and emergency services are operational and our Red Cross volunteers are present."

The rescue operation on a stretch of sea near Palermo, Sicily

Karsten Borner, captain of a nearby boat, told journalists "a little baby and the wife of the owner" of the Bayesian were among the survivors, while those missing included the owner and a child, news agency Reuters reported. He said his crew took on board some survivors who were on a life raft, including three who were seriously injured.

One of the survivors, a British tourist named Charlotte, told la Reppublica she held her one-year-old daughter, Sofia, to stop her from drowning. She said: "I held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning.

"It was all dark. In the water I couldn't keep my eyes open. I screamed for help but all I could hear around me was the screams of others."

Charlotte and Sofia are being treated in hospital, as is Charlotte's husband, James.

A spokesman for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said: "We are in contact with the local authorities following an incident in Sicily, and stand ready to provide consular support to British nationals affected."

Bayesian completed a number of sailings in recent days, calling at various ports in Sicily, according to ship-tracking website VesselFinder. The superyacht can accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites.

She was built in 2008 by Italian company Perini Navi. Her registered owner is listed as Revtom Ltd. There is little publicly-available online information about the company, which appears to be based on the Isle of Man.

Tributes paid to victims of yacht disaster as Hannah Lynch remains missing

British tech tycoon mike lynch is among those to have been pulled from the wreckage but his daughter remains missing, the italian coastguard has said.

sailing yacht a marine traffic

Five bodies discovered in the wreckage of the luxury boat which sank off the coast of Sicily have been identified by the Italian coastguard.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch is among the dead, alongside Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judith Bloomer, lawyer Christopher Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo.

Mr Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch remains unaccounted for, the coastguard said. Search efforts to find her continue today after the five others were brought ashore by rescue teams in Porticello.

The luxury vessel, the Bayesian , was moored half-a-mile off the coast when it sank around 5am local time on Monday while reportedly on a cruise to celebrate Mr Lynch’s recent acquittal of fraud charges in the United States.

In a statement confirming their parent’s death, the Bloomer family described the couple as “incredible people and an inspiration to many”.

They said: “We are grieving for our loved ones and all of those affected by the tragedy.

“Our parents were incredible people and an inspiration to many, but first and foremost they were focused on and loved their family and spending time with their new grandchildren.

“Together for five decades, our only comfort is that they are still together now. This is an unimaginable grief to shoulder.”

Andrew Kanter, a close friend of Mr Lynch described him as a “the most brilliant mind and the most caring person” he had ever known.

He told the BBC : “There is simply no other UK technology entrepreneur of our generation who has had such an impact on so many people. His passion for life, knowledge and all those around him was instantly inspiring to everyone he met, and he will be sorely missed.”

Gareth Williams, friend of Recaldo Thomas, a chef on the yacht, described him as a “well-loved, kind human being with a calm spirit”.

A spokesperson for Clifford Chance, the law firm where Mr Morvillo was a partner said it was “in shock and deeply saddened”.

Who is involved and why were they there?

Mr Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter – who had recently finished her A-levels and was bound for Oxford – were missing after the Bayesian sank on Monday , having reportedly been hit by a tornado.

They were among six passengers missing, while 15 of the 22 people onboard were rescued after escaping onto a lifeboat in the sudden storm in Italy.

Mr Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, was among those rescued, as well as Charlotte Golunkski, who kept her one-year-old daughter Sophie alive by holding her over her head while she was in the water.

The body of Mr Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan man working onboard as the yacht’s chef, was recovered near the yacht on Tuesday morning.

How did the boat sink?

Italian authorities have reported bad stormy conditions that caused the yacht to sink, but investigations into the exact circumstances of the tragedy remain ongoing.

How the Bayesian yacht sinking unfolded and why the search has been hampered

How yacht tragedy unfolded and why the search has been hampered

It is believed the luxury vessel may have been hit by a water spout, a rotating column of wind that forms over a body of water and is often likened to a tornado.

According to the US National Ocean Service, tornadic weather spouts have the “same characteristics” as a land tornado and are often accompanied by severe thunderstorms, “high winds and seas, large hail, and frequent dangerous lightning”.

According to ship tracking data from the Marinetraffic.com website, the Bayesian and a nearby yacht named Sir Robert Baden-Powell started to move out to sea, away from Porticello harbour, just before 4am local time (2am UK time) on Monday.

The tracking data, analysed for the Bayesian shows that it has suddenly stopped 15 minutes later, while the other yacht also stops shortly afterwards – just 200m (656ft) away.

The Sir Robert Baden-Powell is then seen moving slowly around in this area, presumably looking to rescue any survivors. The Bayesian is no longer moving, and this is its last recorded position, according to the tracking data.

What search and rescue efforts are underway?

Rescue divers re-entered the sunken vessel on Thursday to bring the fifth person’s body to the surface, while searches for the sixth missing person are ongoing.

Fire crews from Italy’s fire service Vigili del Fuoco said they had been accessing the vessel through natural entrances, without making openings.

Remote underwater vehicles are being used, with naval units and cave divers also taking part in the search.

Inspections of the yacht’s internal hull took place on Wednesday morning.

“If you manage to get inside, you understand there is a world of objects. So, getting inside and descending into the compartment below from the stairs that are narrow and going into all of the cabins is a really hard and difficult job,” fire department diver Marco Tilotta said per Reuters news agency, according to the BBC.

What will authorities investigate?

Authorities will now attempt to piece together the circumstances surrounding the ship’s sinking.

According to The Guardian , an investigation will be carried out under the supervision of the public prosecutor of Termini Imeresi.

The local port authority has opened a separate investigation to determine whether the crew took safety measures.

A team of four British inspectors from the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) also arrived in Porticello to look at the site of the sinking and investigate what happened because the Bayesian was flying a British flag, it is understood.

The ship’s captain, James Cutfield, was reportedly quizzed by authorities for two hours as they began questioning all crew members.

Speaking to New Zealand media, Mr Cutfield’s brother Mark said his sibling was a “very good sailor” with eight years of experience working abroad on luxury yachts.

Who is Mike Lynch?

Mike Lynch , the British billionaire and tech entrepreneur, owes his fame and fortune to software firm Autonomy, which he sold to Hewlett-Packard for billions in 2011.

Hailing from Suffolk, he graduated with a PhD from the University of Cambridge. Mr Lynch is married to Angela Bacares, with whom he has two daughters.

Who is Mike Lynch? Businessman missing after yacht sinks in Italy

Who is Mike Lynch, the businessman missing after yacht sinking

The father-of-two has a reported net worth valued at around £852m, according to the Independent .

His business ventures led him to once be dubbed “Britain’s Bill Gates” but also landed him in legal trouble.

Autonomy’s sale was wrapped in fraud claims, and he faced civil action in the UK before being extradited to the United States to face criminal charges.

In June, he was cleared of 15 fraud charges after allegations he inflated Autonomy’s worth.

What do we know about the Bayesian?

The 56-metre sailing boat was launched by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, according to the company website.

It was once called the Salute , but was later renamed after Lynch’s PhD thesis on statistical theory by mathematician Thomas Bayes.

Media reports suggest the yacht’s owner is listed as Revtom Limited, a company owned by Mr Lynch’s wife.

Who was Stephen Chamberlain and how is he connected to the situation?

Stephen Chamberlain was an associate of Mike Lynch and stood trial for fraud alongside him after Autonomy’s controversial sale.

Days before the yacht disaster, Mr Chamberlain died after being hit by a car while out jogging.

Mr Chamberlain, Autonomy’s former VP of Finance, was cleared of all charges by a San Francisco court in June.

Relatives of Mr Chamberlain said in a tribute released through police that he was a “much-loved husband, father, son, brother and friend”.

“He was an amazing individual whose only goal in life was to help others in any way possible,” his family said.

After three days of searching the hull of a sailing yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily, divers on Wednesday recovered the bodies of four passengers who were believed to have been trapped inside their cabins when the vessel went down, officials in Sicily said.

The yacht, the Bayesian, with 10 crew members and 12 passengers, was caught in what some witnesses described as a waterspout , essentially a small tornado on water, during a sudden and violent downpour in the pre-dawn hours of Monday.

The recovery of the four bodies was confirmed by Salvatore Cocina, head of Sicily’s civil protection agency, but officials have not yet identified them publicly. Body bags were lifted from a firefighting vessel in Porticello, Sicily, on Wednesday afternoon as a large group of rescuers stood by in their uniforms.

On the dock, a crowd of reporters and bystanders watched on in near complete silence, as a church bell tolled in the background.

Although 15 people made it to safety and the yacht’s cook was confirmed dead, the fate of the remaining six people , including a British tech entrepreneur, Mike Lynch, had been formally unresolved until the update on Wednesday.

In addition to Mr. Lynch, the remaining people who had been identified as missing by the authorities were his daughter Hannah; Jonathan Bloomer, the chairman of Morgan Stanley International; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Christopher J. Morvillo, a lawyer at Clifford Chance; and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

They were part of a group of people celebrating a legal victory for Mr. Lynch, who was acquitted in June of fraud charges tied to the sale of his company, Autonomy , to the tech giant Hewlett-Packard.

The body of the yacht’s cook, Recaldo Thomas, who held Canadian and Antiguan citizenship, was recovered earlier from the water, the Sicilian civil protection agency said.

Deep sea divers with the Vigili del Fuoco, Italy’s firefighting corps, were able to reach the bodies after dealing with what Luca Cari, their spokesman, described as “very difficult” conditions.

The yacht had settled on its side, about 165 feet below the surface, and divers could only remain underwater for a limited amount of time. To complicate matters, they had to navigate through broken furnishings and electrical wiring that blocked the tight spaces inside the hull.

Because of an editing error, an earlier version of this article transposed the number of crew members and passengers on the Bayesian yacht. There were 10 crew members and 12 passengers, not the other way around.
