Review of Chrysler 26
Basic specs..
The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.
The Chrysler 26 has been built with different keel alternatives.
CentreBoard
One option is a centreboard keel. A centreboard keel is a pivoting lifting keel, allowing to sail both coastal and inland waters.
The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.19 - 1.29 meter (3.90 - 4.20 ft) dependent on the load.
Another option is a swing keel. A swing keel is a pivoting lifting keel, allowing to sail both coastal and inland waters.
The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 0.70 - 0.80 meter (2.30 - 2.60 ft) dependent on the load.
Another option is a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel.
Chrysler 26 can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.19 - 1.29 meter (3.90 - 4.20 ft) dependent on the load.
Sailing characteristics
This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.
What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?
The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.0 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

Does anybody have any thoughts good or bad about the chrysler 26 ? i would love to hear your comments. Chris

One at the lake A friend has a 26, he liked his Chrysler 22 but, he needed room for more beer. I have not heard of any known issues with this model. I helped him remove the boat from the lake last fall. When we were motoring to the launch ramp he raised the keel and water started to run in on the floor at the keel cable location. He said he thought it was the volcano tube having a hole rubbed in it from the cable. I have not heard what he found to this date. It sails and handles the weather conditions as good as the Catalina 25, O’day 26, Compac 25 and Balboa 26’s I’ve sailed on, so I would say you made a good choice over some of the other 26’s out there.
Re: One at the lake good info thanks watercolors, im in the process of restoring one now. so far ive redone the bottom, new motor, resealted the deck, and i rewired the whole dam thing. now im getting new cushions made and putting in a wood floor. for some reason they glued the carpet to the floor (horrible idea) and glued FURR in the aft birth (YUK). the winch cable must have punctured the tube and that caused water to flow through. i had this problem as well and had to install a new volcano tube - i used automotive tubing for radiators which is much thicker. i like how much room it has below
Re: One at the lake My first sailing experience was on a bright red fixed keel Chrysler 26. My girlfriend's (at the time) Father had one he kept on Narraganset Bay. He picked it for headroom and interior volume as he was like 6'4" and about 300lbs. Not a pretty boat with the green fiberglass hatches, but can't beat the room for the price and well built.
Thanks Bob, why do you suppose the c26 is so cheap ? i cant figure it out. i paid 2500 for mine, that included the trailer but i had to sink 2k into it to fix it up.

Hi Ralph, is there faceplates on the C26 swing keel ? mine looks like it has a pin inside of a iron fitting so i dont see plates.
When They Were New... ... I really lusted after both the 22 and 26. As I recall, the finish work and hardware was a step up and the rudder and keel were cool. Have a terrific time!

Good luck with your 26,Owed a chrysler 20 for 30 years ,great boat.
About the 26 Chrysler I have purchased a 1978 Chrysler 26' swing keel and the first time we took her out , I have hit some shallow ground only sand , but in wisdom I have tried to crank up the keel to get free , and when I cranked it a couple of times , I felt a pop like something got loose or jumped off , the rails , Does anybody know if I can fix that while she is still in the water or do I have get her out , the keel is all the way down now , and the crank feels , just free, I have not opened up the cover yet , to inspect wondering if anybody has any ideas , thanks

rpell46 said: Been there........ Sounds like you snapped the control cable or the shackle that connects it to the keel. If it's just the fitting, you could probably dive on it and replace. If it's the cable, then it's half the job inside the boat pulling out the old cable and re-threading a new one. Then, diving to connect it to the keel. It is much easier if you haul it out or find a sand bar to lay over on at low tide. Good luck either way. Click to expand
777, I've sailed against a Chry 26 2 times in very heavy weather and had a ball. I could not gain an inch nor could he. Both time we sailed together for a little over an hour. He'd lead then I'd lead. Wow, great way to spend a day. He and I have never met but that's just a reason to sail tomorrow. Now let's get serious. I have owned 5 centerboard boats. Two were weighted centerboards and 3 were simply centerboards and did nothing for ballast. Centerboards are looking for reasons to fail. As you have seen on this site there are many questions about them and tales of woe about the failure of the c/b. Make sure NOW that your board, winch, cable and hinge pin are in very good repair and then check it every year. If you leave the boat in the water at a slip or mooring raise the board to stop pin wear. If you are worried about the cable breaking while doing this then replace the cable. Simple. Enjoy your boat. I know a sailor out here that really enjoys his. Ray

I raced and day sailed on a friend's 26 and really enjoyed the boat. Very solid. The only real issue I can remember is the rudder shaft bent and we had to limp in after a race. He decided to do a full restoration and it turned out great. The bent rudder shaft was hollow tubing and he did change that out to a solid rudder shaft. We could never confirm if the hollow rudder shaft was OEM or a repair by a previous owner. I think we replaced the centerboard cable and pin once in the ten years he owned the boat.

Chrysler Corp. had been in the boating industry since 1957, and began building sailboats in the mid 1960's. It bought out a company called Lone Star Boats of Grand Prairie, Texas in 1965. Last year I picked up a 1977 Chrysler c-26 foot sailboat. It is a swing keel model that is 26 feet long and has a beam of 8 feet. Its displacement is around 5000 with a ballast of around 2000. I was new to sailing and figured it was the biggest boat I could find that I could trailer so it would last me awhile.

The standard 26 cabin features include an enclosed portable marine head, double leaf dinette table, cutlery locker and cupboard, space for one 50-pound and one 100-pound icebox, and a smooth fiberglass headliner. The position of the iceboxes is something we question -- particularly in a 26-foot boat.
