Larendael introduces Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus

the most innovative location for the construction, refit and maintenance of superyachts

On the 42 ha shipyard acquired by Larendael at the end of August in the Western Docklands of Amsterdam, we are going to develop a campus where several superyachts up to 200 meters can be designed and built. Refits and maintenance of super yachts can also be carried out here, both from private owners and from other shipyards. Uniquely, the Campus will offer the opportunity to design and produce the entire yacht on site, as well as provide space for training.

Innovation is central to the concept of the Campus. We invest in facilities and technical resources to encourage collaboration where possible, with open innovation as the goal. Examples include the search for alternative fuels, but we also see opportunities to make the construction process and the materials used in the ships more sustainable.

Demand for superyachts increases

There are currently some 5,500 superyachts in the world and nearly 200 are added each year. There is particularly high demand from America, the Far East, Middle East and Eastern Europe. Our country has been known worldwide for centuries for its many boat builders. With our quality, reliability, innovation and design, the Netherlands also belongs to the world's top in building superyachts. Superyachts are also becoming increasingly larger. In the past five years, 67 superyachts with a length of more than 50 meters were built in the Netherlands alone. To be able to build and maintain these large super yachts, shipyards are needed that are easily accessible and have the right facilities.

Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus

The Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus is easily accessible for superyachts via the North Sea Canal. A total of seven covered docks will be built, four large docks with a length of up to 200 meters and three large docks with a length of up to 155 meters. In addition, these dry docks will also be used for refits and maintenance of existing superyachts. A yacht elevator will be available for yachts up to 80 meters, allowing maintenance to take place ashore. Outside, there will be space for mooring 40 superyachts up to 200 meters long, with a water depth of up to 13 meters.

Wim Beelen (Creative Founder, Larendael):  "With the development of the Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus, we are investing in the future of shipping at a place with a rich history, namely where the leading shipyard, the Amsterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij (ADM), operated in the 18th and 19th centuries."

Stimulating environment

With the Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus, we are creating an environment where craftsmanship, innovation and sustainability are central. By offering an increase in scale at a location that is accessible without restrictions - both via the water and via the land, we offer superyacht yards and suppliers every opportunity to further expand the Dutch competitive position in the superyacht industry not only in size but also in quality.

Larendael introduces the Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus

super yacht tech campus

Larendael has announced the launch of the Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus, an innovative location for the construction, refit, and maintenance of superyachts. Following the acquisition of the historic 53 ha shipyard located in the western port area of Amsterdam in August 2021 , Larendael has unveiled their plans to develop a Campus that can host several superyachts, up to 200 meters in length, for design, production, maintenance, and refits at the lauded site. Unique to this Campus will be its ability to provide the space required for the manifold stages of superyacht production from design to completion, the quantity of superyachts that can be accommodated, and an exceptional environment for both training and education.

Innovation is the essence of the company’s vision in every aspect of the Campus’s design. Their facilities are thoughtfully arranged and stream-lined to conveniently stimulate collaboration at all phases of design and construction. The Campus will provide a leading edge, open environment where students, professionals, and visitors alike can view and participate in the creation of these exquisite yachts. Additionally, we are committed to seeking opportunities to benefit from alternative fuels for a more sustainable process of manufacturing and ship building materials, preserving our Campus as a leader now and into the future for superyacht production.

The Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus is easily accessible for superyachts via the North Sea Canal. A total of seven covered docks will be built, four large docks with a length of up to 200 metres and three large docks with a length of up to 155 metres. These dry docks will also be used for refits and maintenance of existing superyachts. A yacht lift will be available for yachts up to 80 metres, allowing maintenance to be carried out ashore. Outside, there will be room for mooring 40 superyachts up to 200 metres long, with a water depth of up to 13 metres.

Wim Beelen, Creative Founder of Larendael: “With the development of the Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus, we are investing in the future of shipping in a place with a rich history; the location where the former leading shipyard, the Amsterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij (ADM), was active in the 18th and 19th century”.

Wim Beelen , Creative Founder: In 2020, Wim Beelen sold the company he founded, Beelen, a sustainable contractor in the demolition sector, recycler of construction and demolition residues and processor of industrial waste. He changed course and started Larendael. The development of the sustainable last mile concept, the first multi-story xxl logistics city hub, in Amsterdam brought him back to the water. A place where he also likes to spend his free time, because water makes the world a lot bigger. At Larendael, he wants to stimulate and use the open-mindedness of the young generation. In addition, he wants to be primarily occupied with things that give him energy. Building projects from the ground up and making them into something beautiful and unique.

Larendael concludes: “With the Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus we create an environment where craftsmanship, innovation and sustainability can flourish. By offering economies of scale at a location that is accessible without restrictions – both by water and by land – we uniquely provide yacht builders and suppliers a place for the expansion and enrichment of the Dutch competitive position in the superyacht industry, not only in size but also in quality”.

Larendael to Build 53-Hectare Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus

By Jenna Mehdi

Dutch investment firm Larendael has announced plans to build a ‘Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus’ on its recently acquired 53-hectare shipyard in the western port area of Amsterdam. The Campus will host 40 superyachts up to 200m / 656ft in length for design, production, maintenance and refits.

Lauded for its ability to provide the optimum space required for the various stages of superyacht build, the Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus will be built on the site of the former ADM shipyard - a leading Dutch shipyard active in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Campus is built around an ‘energy neutral’ goal, incorporating all construction facilities on site and all campus transportation done on bicycles and electric buggies. Boasting high-tech facilities such as a ‘multidisciplinary Experience Center’ , which offers visitors the superyacht lifestyle experience and introduces them to current industry trends, crew will also be catered to with relaxation facilities and luxury accommodation. The Campus will also be equipped with ‘R&D units and innovation labs’ in the aim of providing an environment for tech companies and think tanks to ‘come up with groundbreaking innovations for the yacht building industry’.

Ideally located for superyachts accessing via the North Sea, the Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus will be built in phases; the first phase, involving preparation of the ground for construction, will begin in December 2021. Construction of quays and piers will begin in April 2022, with the final phase, construction of the Campus structures, commencing in December 2022.

"With the development of the Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus, we are investing in the future of shipping in a place with a rich history." Wim Beelen, Creative Founder of Larendael

Captain of superyacht that sank off sicily declines to respond to prosecutor questions, lawyer says.

Italian Navy scuba divers work at the scene of the search for a missing boat, in Porticello, southern Italy, Thursday, Aug. 22, 2024. Rescue teams and divers returned to the site of a storm-sunken super yacht to search for one person, who are believed to be still trapped in the hull 50 meters (164-feet) underwater. (AP Photo/Salvatore Cavalli)

ROME – The captain of a superyacht that sank during a storm off Sicily last week, killing seven people, decided not to respond to prosecutors’ questions Tuesday, his lawyer said.

James Cutfield, a 51-year-old New Zealand national, is under investigation for possible manslaughter and culpable shipwreck charges and was questioned for the third time by the Termini Imerese prosecutors Tuesday.

Recommended Videos

“He just exercised his right to remain silent, probably prosecutors were expecting that,” lawyer Aldo Mordiglia told The Associated Press, adding that the captain’s legal team has just been named and needs time to work on his defensive strategy.

Cutfield was among 15 survivors of the Aug. 19 sinking that killed British tech magnate Mike Lynch , his daughter Hannah and five others.

Chief prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio, who’s heading the investigation, has said his team would consider each possible element of responsibility including those of the captain, the crew, individuals in charge of supervision and the yacht’s manufacturer.

The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged luxury yacht, went down near the Mediterranean island in southern Italy. Investigators are focusing on how a sailing vessel deemed “unsinkable” by its manufacturer, Italian shipyard Perini Navi, sank while a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed.

Prosecutors said the event was “extremely rapid” and could have been a “downburst” — a localized, powerful wind that descends from a thunderstorm and spreads out rapidly upon hitting the ground.

The crew was saved, except for the chef, while six passengers were trapped in the hull.

Good morning,

Hiring is difficult enough, but now companies large and small are being inundated with job applicants from North Korea.

Tech startup Cinder suspects as many as 80% of its applicants from some job websites are part of a remote work scheme to help fund the North Korean state.

“We saw one email account using automation to apply to 300 different jobs, they're just spraying and praying,” a cybersecurity expert told Forbes . Once hired in a role, often in IT, some North Korean workers use AI to “do the work for them,” each making as much as $300,000 a year.

Rapid expansion by Alphabet’s Waymo continues with a second assembly factory in Arizona to bolster their robotaxi fleets in Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Austin, Forbes has learned. The expansion in Arizona comes after Waymo last week said that its driverless service now provides at least 100,000 paid rides per week to the public, double its ridership from months ago.

A federal judge in Texas temporarily halted a Biden Administration program that offered legal status to undocumented immigrants married to U.S. citizens , a stay that could last up to 14 days, with possible extensions. The Department of Homeland Security began accepting applications under the “Keeping Families Together” program last week and “thousands” have already applied, according to the New York Times .

BUSINESS + FINANCE

Dutch privacy regulators fined Uber a record $324 million Monday for violating the European Union’s data protection laws by transferring sensitive personal data to the U.S. without adequate safeguards. It’s the biggest fine Uber has faced globally , per Bloomberg. Regulators found that Uber had transferred the personal data of European cab drivers—including taxi licenses, IDs, location data, photos, payment details, and “in some cases even criminal and medical records.”

Colin Huang, chief executive officer and founder of Pinduoduo, now PDD Holdings, in 2018

Billionaire Jared Isaacman, who made much of his wealth from his payment processing company Shift4 Payments, is set to embark today on a SpaceX-backed mission that will include the first commercial spacewalk in history. Tesla CEO Elon Musk in the company's electric Roadster, its first model, in January 2009.

Elon Musk’s 18-year-old manifesto that underscored his mission for Tesla has vanished from the company’s blog page , as Musk has pivoted into promoting robotaxis and autonomous vehicles as key to the automaker’s future and profitability. The “Secret Master Plan” laid out Musk’s perspective that Tesla’s key purpose was to show how electric vehicles and solar power could help fight climate change—a view that has dramatically changed with the billionaire's politics in recent years.

Italian authorities launched a manslaughter investigation into the captain of the luxury Bayesian sailing yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily last week in a wreck that killed seven people, including British tech entrepreneur Michael Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter and Morgan Stanley International director Jonathan Bloomer. Prosecutors will investigate whether the crew of the ship appropriately handled the storm that hit the yacht before it capsized, if passengers were warned of imminent danger and if hatches on the ship were left ajar, which would have contributed to its quick sinking.

TRENDS + EXPLAINERS

Your Social Security number, address, and other personal information may have been exposed in a massive security breach that has resulted in at least a dozen lawsuits. One way you can protect yourself is to create an account with the Social Security Administration, as well as to freeze your credit with the three major credit reporting agencies, which is free and does not impact your credit score. Still, that doesn’t prevent someone who already has access to your account from making bogus charges, so make sure to regularly check your bank statements and credit cards.

DAILY COVER STORY

38 great colleges with less admissions stress.

Illustration by Cecilia Runxi Zhang; Photo by allanswart/Getty Images

TOPLINE As the new school year begins, high school seniors are beginning the most stressful experience of their academic lives: applying to college. Adding to their angst is the focus on a small group of name brand schools with impossibly low admissions rates—7% or below for eight of the 10 top-ranked schools on Forbes ’ new America’s Top Colleges list and all eight members of the Ivy League.

But here’s the good news for teens and their parents: There are terrific schools, providing a great, rigorous education and strong career prospects, that admit 30%, 40% or even 50% and more of their applicants.

How do we know? The Forbes Top Colleges list uses a unique methodology that emphasizes students' success—high graduation rates (for kids from all economic backgrounds), hefty early-career salaries, relatively less student debt. We don’t factor admissions rates in at all .

But this year, after we compiled our list, we looked at schools’ admissions rates and found that 38 of our top 100 admit more than 30% of applicants, with 16 admitting 50% or more. In other words, these are great schools, with less admissions stress.

That doesn’t mean you can get in without solid grades or get out without working hard—it just means that gaining admission is somewhat predictable , and doesn’t depend on family connections or a lottery-like, unpredictable win.

The stress-less 38 are scattered across the country, from New York to Georgia to Utah to California, and include big, public research universities like the University of Wisconsin-Madison and small, private colleges like Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania.

WHY IT MATTERS “Parents and students often see low college acceptance rates as a proxy for quality —after all, if so many students are clamoring for spots, the school must be great, right?” says Forbes staff writer Emma Whitford. “But as application numbers are inflated and acceptance rates pushed lower and lower at a small set of name brand schools, this assumption becomes less valid. Instead of exclusivity, other important characteristics—like graduation rate, median earnings of graduates, program offerings, cost and campus culture—should guide your college search. It not only makes sense, but makes for a less stressful application process.”

STRATEGY + SUCCESS

Providing employees with actionable feedback on a regular basis has a major impact on performance and retention . Offer feedback soon after hiring an employee, and use it as an opportunity to check-in. Keep in mind the frequency of feedback, too—those earlier into their careers may need more feedback than more seasoned employees. And don’t forget that it’s a two-way street, and ask your employees what’s working well for them and how you can improve as a leader.

Mike Lynch’s Body Is Found After Sicily Yacht Sinking, Official Says

The authorities have recovered the bodies of all but one of the six people missing after disaster struck a yacht carrying the British software tycoon.

Emma Bubola reported from Porticello, Italy, and Elisabetta Povoledo from Pallanza, Italy.

The body of the British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch was among those recovered by Italian divers, an official in the Sicilian capital, Palermo, said on Thursday, confirming that he was killed when a violent storm struck his yacht this week.

Of the 22 people on board the yacht, which had anchored off the Sicilian coast early Monday, when it sank, nine crew members and six passengers survived.

As of Thursday afternoon, Italian recovery teams had retrieved the bodies of the one remaining crew member and five passengers who had been on the yacht, which now lies in 165 feet of water near the port of Porticello, and were searching for one more passenger.

The death of Mr. Lynch was confirmed by Massimo Mariani, the prefect of Palermo, who said that the remaining missing person was the technology entrepreneur’s daughter Hannah.

The others victims were Jonathan Bloomer, the chairman of Morgan Stanley International; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Christopher J. Morvillo, a lawyer at Clifford Chance; and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

“This is an unimaginable grief to shoulder,” the Bloomer family said in a statement. “Our parents were incredible people.”

The Morvillo family said it was “completely devastated by the passing of Chris and Neda,” and added, “Their passing is a tremendous loss.”

The yacht was caught in a sudden downpour. Weather experts said that strong winds and lightning had hit the area and that the yacht had most likely been struck by air generated within a thunderstorm descending rapidly or by a waterspout , similar to a tornado over water.

12 guests occupied the yacht’s six cabins. There were also 10 crew members.

Open hatches, doors and cabin windows could have let in water during a storm, according to the manufacturer.

Rescue teams involving deep sea divers with the Italian firefighters’ corps, coordinated by the coast guard, as well as helicopters and rescue ships, had worked to reach the hull of the ship, which had settled on its side on the sea floor.

Carlo Dall’Oppio, the national head of Italy’s firefighters, said on Thursday that the boat was tilted by 90 degrees on the sea bottom. He said the bodies had been found “in the cabins,” although it remained unclear if they were all found in the same one.

The rescue teams recovered four bodies on Wednesday and one on Thursday, bringing them ashore in body bags in front of a crowd of reporters and onlookers.

The priority remained “the recovery of the missing body,” said Mr. Mariani. Once that search is completed, the judicial authorities would decide the next steps, he said.

The bodies recovered so far were already at the disposal of prosecutors, he said, “and then there is the investigative phase,” which would include the recovery of the yacht.

The Italian prosecutors handling the case have attracted strong criticism from the local press association because of their reluctance to share any information with reporters.

As of Thursday, they had not held a news conference or released a statement on the investigation, generating what the Sicilian press association called “a black market of news” that made it hard to verify information.

Finally, on Thursday afternoon, Ambrogio Cartosio, the prosecutor handling the case, said that a news conference would be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the town of Termini Imerese, the location of his office.

Mr. Mariani said the operations to recover the bodies had gone quickly, taking into account that the divers had a limited amount of time — about 12 minutes — to operate before coming up.

“It was complicated and also potentially dangerous for the divers,” he said, because of the size of the yacht. “There are objective difficulties; thankfully, they are well trained and know what they are doing.”
