In traditional terms the yachting world is divided into two categories, motor and sail. Motor requires propulsion from consuming carbon-based fuel, a very simple solution. Sail on the other hand, deploys a complex and fragile rig which can often be restrictive.  Evidence is the first ever wing-yacht, a 156ft catamaran powered by a 400 sq m sail.

Oceanwings manages to bridge this propulsion divide through innovation and inspiration. It produces twice the power of a conventional sail, the wing is reefable, furlable as well as fully automated. What’s more when integrated into a hybrid propulsion system, fuel consumption of the main engines can be reduced resulting in less greenhouse gases.

VPLP Design reveals wingsail yacht concept Evidence

French studio VPLP Design has released its latest yacht concept, a 47.55 metre wingsail catamaran called Evidence.

Using similar technology to that which propelled the America’s Cup racing boats during the last two campaigns, Evidence only requires a relatively small sailplan for her length of 400 square metres.

In a statement, the studio added: “Evidence offers the stability, space and performance of a catamaran with the bonus of a simple, yet pioneering rig — so you and your crew can enjoy the peace and pleasure of sailing under wind power.”

Accommodation is for up to 12 guests split between six staterooms, including a main-deck owner’s cabin that measures 46.5 square metres. A double and a twin cabin are also located on the main deck, while two further twins and another double on the lower deck complete the guest layout.

The crew quarters would be situated entirely in the starboard hull and would allow for a staff of up to ten people. Vital statistics include a 16.6 metre beam and a maximum draught of three metres.

Out on deck, Evidence offers plenty of options for relaxing and soaking up the sun, with a private owner’s cockpit near the bow, upper deck sunpads and a vast superyacht sundeck , complete with glass-bottomed spa pool. Meanwhile, extensive storage space allows Evidence to carry two tenders, Seabobs and a full set of Scuba diving gear.

Auxiliary power would come from a pair of 490hp Caterpillar C12 diesel engines that propel this multihull superyacht to a top speed of 16 knots and offer comfortable cruising at 14 knots.

VPLP’s EVIDENCE Superyacht Speaks For Itself

By Victor Baker

Published on November 14, 2017

EVIDENCE superyacht

Would you go for a petrol or diesel-powered motor yacht or do you like to enjoy some wind in your sails? As you ponder that question, allow us to introduce to you the very first wing-yacht, a sleek 156-foot catamaran, powered by a 400 sq m sail. Called EVIDENCE, this stunning yacht may look minimalist at first glance, but there were some complex calculations in the making of this vessel.

Ocean wings produce twice the power of a conventional sail, as these wings are reefable, furlable, as well as fully automated. If they are integrated into a hybrid propulsion system, as in this case, they can reduce the yacht’s fuel consumption drastically and those unwanted greenhouse gases will also go down as well.

EVIDENCE superyacht

Promising the same levels of performance, space, and stability as a catamaran,  this vessel was designed by the French-based naval architects VPLP and it can accommodate a maximum of 12 guests and 10 crewmembers. EVIDENCE was specifically designed for crossing the Atlantic, hence the automated wingsail and mechanical propulsion that allow it to sail for miles and miles with reduced fuel usage.

The peace and pleasure of sailing with the wind will make any voyage aboard this yacht an unforgettable experience, that will get you in touch with nature. One thing’s for sure – this wing yacht is a welcomed addition to the sailing universe. I’m sorry to say there are no further details to talk about and unfortunately we don’t have any photos of its planned interiors either.

But we’re pretty sure we will hear more about this vessel pretty soon.

OceanWings by VPLP

“It all began in 2009 in San Diego, California, with the wingsail for the Oracle trimaran for the 2010 America’s Cup” says Marc Van Peteghem of the OceanWings’ backstory.

vplp yachts

He heads the French studio VPLP with Vincent Lauriot Prévost that developed the latter radically innovative wind propulsion system which manages to retain the aerodynamic characteristics of a rigid wingsail but can also have the amount of sail surface exposed to the wind reduced because it is both furlable and reefable.

vplp yachts

It is also automated and can be produced on an industrial scale. Most impressively of all, it is now moving from its experimental stage to concrete application.

“Vincent and I asked ourselves how that type of wing could be used for maritime transport.  Whatever it was and technical problems aside, it needed to deliver economic results, a return on investment, and to pay for itself in terms of fuel savings in an economically reasonable timescale.  Only then would it be useful,” says the designer.

vplp yachts

VPLP developed its idea on paper for four long years and then with the financial backing of  France’s Energy and Energy Management Agency, ADEME, it finally got to build an OceanWings working prototype in 2013. The latter comprises two wingsails which together create a system with a 21 square metre sail surface.

vplp yachts

They can be manoeuvred too to optimise their angle of incidence to the vessel’s point of sail and can also be reefed. They are self-supporting and completely automated.

vplp yachts

More importantly still, they are almost twice as efficient as a traditional rig. The OceanWings prototype has been fitted to an 8-metre trimaran, itself highly innovative. In fact, it is built from eco-composites made from linen fibre and recycled thermoplastic resins. On August 28 2013, the first sea trials began while R&D continued.

vplp yachts

The big turning point came in December 2017.

vplp yachts

“Since then we have found an industrial partner, CNIM, a large French group that works in environmental, energy and high tech sectors. So we have transitioned from the final design phase to actually using OceanWings on big catamarans like our Komorebi 200 and on Evergreen Marine Corporation vessels,” continues Van Peteghem.

vplp yachts

“The shipping world – container ships, oil tankers, freighters and passenger vessels – is the very reason by we developed OceanWings.

vplp yachts

The reason is simple. Almost 80 per cent of world trade is by sea and International Maritime Organization projections suggest that will rise to 90 per cent by 2050.

vplp yachts

While pollution and greenhouse gases produced by maritime transportation accounts for just three per cent of the overall world figure right now, it is estimated that without intervention that will rise to 17 per cent by 2050.

vplp yachts

This is why the IMO has set itself the goal of halving emissions by 2050. To do that the ships of the future will have to green.”

vplp yachts

He adds: “We are working on a design for a 120-130-metre mercantile vessel that will be fitted with an OceanWings systems with six elements of 250 square metres apiece. It will save 25% on fuel on a six-knot Atlantic crossing”.

vplp yachts

So it will be a sailing mercantile vessel? “It’s a mixed system with OceanWings combined with a conventional auxiliary engine. It would be better if it was thermo-electric though. In terms of performance we worked with meteorological experts on weather data from the last 10-15 years.

vplp yachts

As an initial solution, we set a series of starting data for the ship and calculated its performance on the basis of historic wind data.

vplp yachts

As a second solution, we considered routage proper, a weather research and consultancy service focused on identifying the best route, just as happens in ocean racing.

vplp yachts

This means that the ship went looking for the conditions most likely to make it faster, which meant it could do without its engine and save up to double the fuel. It’s a navigational philosophy very close to sailing”.

vplp yachts

So OceanWings is economically feasible… “The system works once you can tell the owner that they will break even on their OceanWings investment in five years. We ask for the characteristics of the ship, the route and the frequency of its voyages.

vplp yachts

We do a simulation using past weather readings and then we can predict the savings. For instance, if a ship is following the routes from France to North Africa, it will save up to 40% of its fuel. But that figure can be even higher on longer distances”.

vplp yachts

OceanWings, which was installed on Energy Observer, the hydrogen-engined catamaran that sailed around the world, is also aboard your S-Jet foiling cat project in partnership with Airbus. So is it the future?  “It will take more time for sailing. Right now, automatic control of the foils still isn’t possible. You need manual control on a sailing boat.

vplp yachts

It will take time. But on motor-powered vessels, by which I mean passenger ships, it is the future. Even though OceanWings is high performance and reliable but there is still a long way to go. But it also proves how much sailing has changed on a technological level”.

vplp yachts

And speaking of wingsails and foils, one last question to you as an America’s Cup winner, what do you think of the next one?  “I’m not wild about it. I think it is a pity they abandoned the multihulls. We had found something that allowed different countries to take part with the possibility of developing interesting technologies using accessible budgets. Now they have started with this reactionary solution.  I don’t like it though.

vplp yachts

At the end of the day, because they involve so many people, skills and money, these boats will have to be interesting. To look at at least. But I don’t know if they will add anything new. I love competition and technology but not when they become inaccessible”.

NEMESIS ONE - THE WORLD’S FASTEST LUXURY HYDROFOIL SUPERYACHT

Creating a completely new ‘breed’ of superyachts, catering to high performance enthusiasts, who don’t want to compromise on cruising comfort. Nemesis Yachts is the first multihull yacht builder, to offer a level of performance, previously reserved exclusively for striped out racing yachts. Combining: Ultrafast & zero emission cruising, luxurious & modern interiors, with fighter jet style ‘fly-by-wire’ autonomous controls ...

vplp yachts

August 18th marks a turning point in the segment of high performance sailing yachts, when builder Nemesis Yachts debuted with their groundbreaking 332 feet (101 meters) futuristic hydrofoil catamaran design.

The ‘NEMESIS ONE’ will be the World’s Fastest Luxury Foiling Yacht, able to break the 50 knots speed barrier, while flying on computer controlled hydrofoils. Contrary to being a stripped out racing vessel, the all carbon fiber Nemesis One boasts stunning futuristic, yet comfortable interiors.

The future owner of the world’s fastest sailing yacht doesn’t have to sacrifice on comfort. Powered by VPLP Design’s patented ‘OCEANWINGS’ wing sail, the high-tech superyacht resembles more of a stealth fighter jet, than a conventional sailing yacht.

vplp yachts

The excessive speeds the sailing yacht will be capable of under sail, required the Nemesis team to completely abandoned the classic operating concept of: ‘Pulling lines and handling sails’. To further minimize crew requirements, they’ve implemented state of the art hydraulic and electric controls throughout the design. Replacing bulky winches in the size of a car’s tire and line cluttered cockpits, commonly conceived when thinking of large sailing yachts.

One of the design’s cornerstones is the fully autonomous VPLP Oceanwings wing sail, powering the Nemesis One. The wing automatically adjusts it’s angle of attack, camber and twist, eliminating any need for manual sail trimming. Additionally, the reef and furlable wing sail is a staggering 2.6 times more efficient than a conventional sail plan of equal size. But flying on water at speeds in excess of 50 knots, leaving most performance motor yachts in her wake, won’t come at the expense of security and comfort. Nemesis One will be equipped with the latest generation of smart LiDar (laser radar) sensors, precisely capturing the yachts surroundings. The current sea state, especially wave height, shape and frequency, will be live monitored by LiDar as well. All gathered data will be processed by the yacht’s mainframe and translated into precise control commands for the automated hydrofoils and rudders, making the yacht exceptionally stable & safe at any given speed.

The Nemesis One offers the unique option to exchange the port and starboard facing living modules, for ones with different interior configurations. Making it a breeze to transform the interior layout from owner to charter setup for example. To boost her performance even further, both modules can also be completely removed, transforming the already very fast yacht into ‘Ultra-Light Race Mode’ configuration. Even without wind, the Nemesis One will remain a zero emission vessel. Powered by a retractable hydrogen-electric propulsion, the yacht has no need for any fossil fuel. In addition to the hydrogen fuel, up to 750 sqm / 8073 sqft of solar panels, will generate up to 150kW of power, to recharge the yacht’s batteries.

The Nemesis One’s many innovations do come with a hefty price tag of approx.

$95 million / €80 million. For more information visit: www.nemesisyachts.com

5 new sailing scows aimed at the cruising market

Toby Heppell

  • Toby Heppell
  • October 25, 2023

There has been a raft of new sailing scows announced this year, with the cruising market following the racing world in design philosophy

vplp yachts

Those who followed the early stages of this year’s Rolex Fastnet Race will surely have been intrigued by how well the front runners in the Class 40 fleet appeared to handle the brutal wind against tide conditions that caused problems for a lot of other boats. Conventional wisdom has it that a slim, narrow hull is ideal for sailing upwind in a blow. Yet the recent Class 40s carry their immense beam well forward of the mast, with a bow that’s closer to a square shape than a conventional point.

However, when heeled these boats present a relatively narrow immersed section that doesn’t slam into a head sea with the intensity that the flat saucer-like hull might suggest. At the same time they have enormous righting moment, which gives power to punch over big waves and reduces the total time spent sailing to windward. This stability is also an important factor in the boats’ behaviour in strong gusts: an increase of wind that would have many of the rest of us scrabbling for another reef is often handled simply by depowering the top of the mainsail with a bit more twist.

Although this hull form has only been in existence for little more than a decade, since David Raison won the 2011 Mini Transat in a boat of his own design, it has quickly gained traction across the Mini 6.50, Class 40 and IMOCA 60 fleets. It’s now increasingly appearing in designs for cruising yachts, which also have potential to offer considerably more internal volume than other vessels of a similar length.

vplp yachts

Skaw Paradise

The Skaw Paradise is a very beamy 11.3m foiling scow bow cruiser with its roots firmly in the racing scene, but with the concepts reworked to produce an ultimate cruiser. Skaw CEO and founder Benoit Marie is also technical director, coach and co-skipper (when racing double-handed) for Caroline Boule, who’s notched up a string of impressive results in the Mini 6.50 class this season in her full flying Sam Manuard-designed Nicomatic.

Marie co-designed the Skaw Paradise with naval architect Clément Bercault of Berco Design. “We could not find any boat on the market suiting our needs, so we started designing our own perfect boat,” he says.

“It’s one to take our friends and family around the world to unseen places, in the safest, easiest and fastest manner.”

The Skaw Paradise differs to Nicomatic in that it has fully retractable C-foils that are intended to act like motion dampeners, giving a smoother ride, while also increasing both stability and speed. While much is borrowed from the racing world, this boat has been simplified as much as possible, so it’s not complicated to sail.

vplp yachts

SailScow 37

Much of the drive towards scow bow cruising yachts is driven by top level racing sailors. Armel Tripon, who raced the then radical Sam Manuard-designed IMOCA 60 L’Occitane de Provence in the 2020 Vendée Globe, has lent his name to the SailScow brand that’s working on a range of four designs from 28-42ft.

“The hull I was able to test racing around the globe delighted me,” says Tripon. “I can easily imagine myself cruising on a scow to take full advantage of the sailing performance, the ease of passage through the sea and the incredible comfort at anchor – I can’t wait to try it out.”

The first SailScow model is a 37ft cruiser designed by Gildas Plessis, a strong advocate of this hull shape. It’s primarily of marine ply and epoxy and offers a step change in internal space compared to other yachts of this length. Options include a four cabin layout, with two doubles forward, both with rectangular beds, while aft there’s a further double, plus a twin cabin with bunk beds. Alternatively there’s space for a giant owner’s cabin forward, plus one aft double port and a generous technical and stowage area to starboard.

vplp yachts

VPLP Fast Cruising Scow

PLP’s carbon Fast Cruising Scow is a 40ft concept that aims to maximise both performance and comfort. It has a covered and glazed saloon/cockpit area like those found on cruising catamarans. On the same level as the working areas of the cockpit, it provides shelter from sun and water both when used as a dining area and as a watch keeping zone on passage.

Air draught a fraction over 20m (67ft) helps provide a big rig that will produce plenty of power, while retractable foils will reduce heel angles thanks to the righting moment they generate, at the same time as cushioning the passage of the boat through waves.

vplp yachts

Breton yard IDB Marine was one of the forerunners in producing a cruising boat based on a scow bow design. The Mojito 650 uses the same extreme scow bow hull as the phenomenally successful David Raison-designed Maxi 650 that won the series division of the last Mini Transat race, taking five of the top nine places.

The Mojito 650 is a detuned boat with a new coachroof that gives a panoramic view, plus a six-berth interior with a full-size rectangular double bed forward. There’s also plenty of stowage and all that’s lacking compared to many significantly larger craft is standing headroom and a separate heads compartment. A smaller and simplified rig compared to that of the Maxi 650 makes this an easy boat to sail and a lot less tweaky than the original, yet it’s still one that will happily plane at speeds well into double digits and hold its own upwind against boats 10ft longer.

La Rochelle-based RM Yachts has been forging a different path to mainstream yards for more than 30 years with its range of distinctive fast plywood/epoxy performance cruisers. The latest model – a sixth generation RM designed by Marc Lombard, is directly influenced by today’s raceboats, with the aim of producing a spacious, fast and dry 36-footer that can cover long distances at fast average speeds.

“It offers greater safety, more interior and exterior space and greater ease of movement,” says lead designer Eric Levet. “The hull is powerful and voluminous but not excessively so at the bow, for a good passage through the waves.”

The first example is scheduled to start construction in January next year and is expected to be afloat in July 2024.

How to boat rental?

Looking for a catamaran charter, you should consider a number of factors.

  • Destination – for example, Italy (Sardinia), Spain (Majorca, Balearic islands), Montenegro, or somewhere else.
  • The days of start and finish of your cruise. One should bear in mind that yacht rent is normally provided from Saturday (5:00 p.m.) to Saturday (9:00 a.m.).
  • Number of passengers. To get an appropriate boat model. Budget (service rates are provided below).

4300 yachts owners, 241 bases, 51 destinations for travel

The total cost is determined by yacht model, season and the list of provided services. Thus a 7-day rent of catamaran Lagoon 380 in Montenegro –ranges from 2900 to 4300 € depending on sailing season.

The cost includes:

  • full fuel tank, fully functional and equipped yacht (catamaran) ready for charter;

  • semi-rigid dinghy;
  • 2 sets of linen with bath towels for each PAX;
  • snorkeling sets (masks, swim fins, breathing tubes).

Get an estimate rental cost according to your demands right now ...

Mandatory and additional charges associated with the boat rental

Extra fee is taken for mandatory end-cleaning of the yacht (150 €), outboard engine (80 €) and translog in Montenegro (120-140 €).

Additional payments apart from charter cost include:

  • skipper (140-200 € per day), cook (200 € per day), steward (100 € per day);
  • inflatable donut (100 €) or paddle surf (130 €); a gennaker may be suggested to experienced yachtsmen (300-400 € plus extra 500 € as a deposit) per week;
  • additional linen and bath towels (10 € for each extra set), fishing rods, etc.

Before you sail off you can plan a personal travel route including mooring for shopping, visiting bars, festivals, etc.

Charter deposit insurance (damage waiver)

To insure the client?s responsibility in case of possible damages to the boat during the cruise, the price is calculated based on the model of catamaran.

Technical inspection is done with client’s presence before the charter and right after it. Underwater boat inspection is done by a diver (that is why we always ask our clients to return to base in time).

We offer our clients 2 variants of refundable security deposit:

1) Full deposit. Normally a client can leave the due sum by various means. If there is no damage or loss to the yacht, the deposit amount is returned after the charter.

2) Reduced deposit with a damage waiver. Damage waiver covers client?s responsibility and reduces the refundable deposit amount. The insurance premium is determined by the model of catamaran.

As a rule, sailing yacht charters start with a client’s inquiry – via e-mail, phone call or personal visit to the Yacht Voyage Moscow office. Mind to contact us beforehand: firstly, during the season European tourists also start their catamaran hunting, and secondly, with early booking you may get 10% off charter price.

Our Moscow office phone number +7 (495) 721-49-79. Contacts for Yacht Voyage representative offices in Europe can be found here...

Lagoon Motor Yacht

40 MY , 630 MY , Sixty7 and Seventy8

An extension of the Smartboat, the Lagoon MY wasn’t initially designed as a motorboat but a sailing yacht with the underlying idea of retaining the benefits of a catamaran (stability, independence and space for the owners). Comfort and sea-keeping qualities were given priority over speed. Changing the after section of the hull transformed the Lagoon-type sailing boat into an ocean-going cruiser with an optimal speed of 12–15 knots.

 width=

And these sea-keeping qualities, inherited from the celebrated Lagoon 620, and her considerable operating range offer the owner the potential for long, trouble-free sea voyages. Not only that, the comfortable and luxurious interiors make her a veritable floating residence, whether at moorings or underway.

 width=

The Seventy 8 is none other than the motorized version of the Seventy 7, flagship of the Lagoon range, and enjoys all the same features that contributed to the latter’s success: elegant silhouette, stylish coachroof, plenty of space, customizable flybridge (jacuzzi or sundeck), large platform forward (30 m2), customizable interior of the stern section of the port hull (meeting room, cinema…). And let’s not forget the remarkable hull door on starboard which folds down into a private swimdeck for the owner’s cabin, as well as facilitating ventilation and crew access to the saloon. With a choice of 510 HP or 580 HP propulsion, the Seventy 8 has an operating range of 4,000 nautical miles at a speed of 19 knots. Perfect for fetching distant horizons.
