Whether you’re seconds from the water or nestled deep into a beach community, living in a coastal location comes with countless joys. Salty breezes, endless blue skies, intriguing wildlife, the lulling sound of water. It only makes sense to lean into the natural surroundings when designing and decorating your home. Think dreamy coastal color palettes , natural textures, and sun-bleached wood grains.

“One of the things I love most about beach houses is the freedom to really have fun with the design. Beach houses allow for a bit more creativity and personality,” says Marnie Oursler , a builder in the Delaware beach region and founder of Marnie Custom Homes. “You can take design risks and incorporate elements that might feel too bold or playful in other settings but are perfectly at home by the coast.”

Looking for inspiration for your own home? Interior designers share some of their favorite beach house décor ideas and tips to provide you with some design direction.

Make a Statement With Lighting

Keyanna Bowen / Marnie Custom Homes

Consider light fixtures the jewelry of your space—an opportunity to dazzle and make a true statement. Here, a modern chandelier featuring translucent calcite slabs serves as a centerpiece against a backdrop of weathered shiplap, crisp white accent chairs, and streaming window light.

Invoke an Open and Airy Feel

Raquel Langworthy Photo / K+Co. Living

Beach homes often feel expansive and inviting, which is achieved through open floor plans , high ceilings, light color palettes , and—perhaps most importantly—floor-to-ceiling windows with minimal drapery. Along with allowing in lots of light, this also gives you a front-row seat to beautiful views and helps create a connectedness to nature.

Mix and Match Textures

Katie Winnington / C&E Furniture

This soothing beach house bedroom weaves in a variety of textures, which adds instant depth to the neutral color palette . "This is our ideal bedroom: cozy and inviting with a contemporary beachside cottage vibe," says Katie Winnington , principal designer at C&E Furniture. "The wood grain on the dresser stands out beautifully, becoming the focal point of the room, while the neutral accents around it enhance the overall space perfectly."

Adopt the Unexpected Red Theory

Brooke Copp Barton + Megan Taylor Photography / Otto Tiles & Design

If you're craving more color than what the classic white, beige, and blue color scheme offers, go ahead and take the " unexpected red " approach. "I love the sheer boldness of this room, the mix of materials, colors, and patterns here," says Damla Turgut , founder and creative director of Otto Tiles & Design. "The trick to successfully creating this more maximalist beach house look is keeping the color palette tight. Shades of blue, red, and green are all grounded by neutrals."

Incorporate Plenty of Seating

Julie Leffell / Tusk Home + Design

Having plenty of seating makes your beach house an inviting place to host family and friends. A large dining table and an oversized sectional are the perfect pieces for a beach house, providing your family and guests with ample space to share a meal and then cozy up after a day on the water.

Consider Wicker Furniture

Creative Tonic

Wicker is a classic beach home staple, and it's pretty versatile. Though it's often utilized outdoors thanks to its durability, you can also weave it into your interior spaces in the kitchen, at the bar, or even in the living room via accent furniture.

Put Time Into Your Outdoor Space

The beauty of beach homes is that the weather beckons you to spend as much time outside as possible. Take care to make your outdoor deck, patio, or yard as inviting as possible by outfitting it with plenty of seating. In this design by K+Co. Living , numerous conversational areas are incorporated along with a space for al fresco dining.

Choose a Light, Neutral Color Scheme

Dana Hoff / Marnie Custom Homes

When in doubt, opt for a creamy neutral color story that's reminiscent of the beach. "Soft, neutral color palettes—think whites, sandy beiges, and ocean blues—create a calming atmosphere that mirrors the serenity of the beach," Oursler says. Pops of blue, teal, and even red can help add some dimension.

Incorporate Something Blue

Blue tones also make sense in a beach house and can range from splashy teal to deep ocean blue to pastel variations. In this design by K+Co. Living, blue accents find their way into a kitchen via backsplash, cabinets, and the underside of a large island.

Add a Rug to Ground the Space

Flooring serves as the canvas upon which the rest of a space’s design elements build. "To capture the perfect coastal aesthetic for your beach house, add an area rug that features colors and textures straight from the ocean’s palette," says Katherine Cohen, associate creative director at FLOR . "Look for styles that feature natural textures, elegant lines, and sun-washed hues to bring a sense of refinement and relaxation to your space."

Weave in Natural Details

The use of wood, greenery, and other natural materials helps create a connection with the surrounding environment. Consider a wooden table or bench, living plants, seashells, pottery, rattan, and beyond.

Opt for Pale Wood

While dark wood accents work here and there, the majority of wood pieces you bring into your beach home should be pale, as shown in this beach house design by K+Co. Living. Doing so seamlessly ties in with the light-neutral color scheme and alludes to a naturally sun-soaked wood. This applies to furniture, flooring, shelving, and beams.

Build a Nautical Bunk Room

Beach homes are often gathering spaces for friends and family, making bunk rooms an excellent way to accommodate more people. Have fun with it by leaning into a nautical theme. "Bunk rooms are a staple at the beach as I’m always trying to design the most functional spaces with a fun vibe," Ousler says. "For a twist, try installing your shiplap vertically like we did here and use fun accents like cleats for drawer handles and rope for a handrail."

Choose Bold Flooring

Overdale House + Darren Chung Photography / Otto Tiles & Design

Have fun with your beach house bathroom by incorporating bold flooring or splashy wallpaper. "A bathroom should be a sanctuary, and I’m never more relaxed then when I’m soaking in the bathtub after a day at the beach," Turgut says. "There’s an instant appeal to a classic blue and white color palette in a bathroom, but it can feel a little cliché. For a sophisticated and contemporary feel, combine it with soft neutrals and maroon, these additional hues will instantly elevate the palette, creating a more refined look."

Try Weathered Wood Walls

Add dimension and character to your beach home with walls featuring reclaimed or weathered wood. "One of my favorite ways to bring charm to a new build is with incorporating wood walls into my designs," Oursler says. "Whether you use reclaimed wood, new wood, or new wood made to look old, a plank wall adds tons of warmth and texture to a space."

Leverage Wow-Worthy Accents

C&E Furniture

This beach house living room wows with wood and rattan accent chairs that double as conversational pieces. Large windows let in lots of light while putting ocean views on display, and a plush sectional invites you to relax and unwind.

Keep Clean With a Mudroom

Studio Far West / Otto Tiles & Design

The practicality of a mudroom (sandroom?) works brilliantly in a beach house setting, too. It's great for tossing sandy clothes and shoes and hanging wet swimsuits to dry. Plus, the space provides lots of storage. "Stripes and geometrics work in harmony here thanks to the concise color palette and variety of textures—cement flooring, timber paneling, jute carpet, and cotton cushions," Turgut says.

Get Playful With Surfboards

Surfboards are quintessentially beachy, making them an excellent décor detail in coastal homes. Consider hanging them in the entryway or a large wall, or add them to a shower as done by Ousler in this design. "I absolutely love this design because it brings joy and perfectly captures the essence of beach living," she says. "The double outdoor shower with custom surfboards as the backdrop is functional and fun."

Or Opt for Paddles

If surfboards aren't quite the vibe for your beach house, perhaps paddles feel more appropriate. This upcycled set has been painted fun primary colors and placed vertically on a crisp white shiplap wall.

Build an Outdoor Bath

Aller Dorset / Otto Tiles & Design

Maximize how much time you can spend in the beautiful outdoors at your beach home by building an outdoor bath. "Who doesn’t want to run back from the beach and shower off whilst still enjoying the view? The combination of yellow and white has a sunshine appeal that is energizing, and the palette provides a fresh take on coastal style," says Turgut. Use the same tiles for the floors and walls to create a cohesive and balanced look and choose a matching tub.

Living Vehicle GT39 rival’s interiors of luxury yachts, offers freedom of off-grid living on the road

yacht interior decor

Before the pandemic, we lived in a generously simple world with mobile homes catering to the bare minimum needs on the road. A bedroom, convertible living room, kitchenette, dry bathroom, and that was almost it. Most of the interior was paneled with wood and the exterior was done in aluminum for durability. Now, with the likes of Living Vehicle, a Santa Barbara, CA-based boutique travel trailer builder – that has been marrying luxury and sustainability over the years – is redefining the word: luxury mobile living with the new GT series.

Electric trailers by Living Vehicle have been close competitors to the Airstreams. These models are designed to sell a way of life that in Living Vehicle’s ideology is “sustainable, off-grid, and luxurious.” The company has ventured into a new category with the GT series fifth wheelers. These models: the flagship GT39 and the smaller-sized GT32, combine off-grid fierceness with luxury that matches the feel of a yacht on land.

Designer: Living Vehicle

yacht interior decor

Living Vehicle has always focused on developing off-grid mobile trailers that can be used for full-time living, the Cyber Trailer for instance. The GT39 may be a different unit in approach, but its fundamentals are aligned with the company’s signature style. The fifth wheeler measures 39-foot long and features an architecturally designed interior. It fits the master bedroom – with a king-size bed and panoramic windows – in the gooseneck and is apt for sleeping four to six people with a living room that transforms into a guest sleeper.

yacht interior decor

The Living Vehicle GT39 model tips the scale at 16000 lbs but has, and we cannot iterate enough, a motor yacht-style luxurious interior comprising 8-foot ceilings, hardwood flooring, powder-coated aluminum cabinets, and top-of-the-line appliances. The living room with reclining seats has a 70-inch home theater system and fireplace, just adjacent is a chef’s kitchen attached to a bar that doubles as a workspace. Next up with the bathroom with a composting toilet and a teak-paneled shower.

yacht interior decor

Stretching the interior luxury into the exterior landscapes is the fold-down deck of the GT39, which is spacious enough to be used as an outdoor dining space or an outdoor kitchen at the campsite. The fold-down deck is covered with a folding awning. The interesting element of this yacht for the road is the option of installing anywhere between 2.2 and 5 kilowatts of solar panels on the roof. Stretching the entire length and breadth of the LV model, the solar cells can extend onto the awnings for additional coverage. To enhance the self-sustaining capability, this fifth-wheeler’s solar system is supported by a hybrid backup power generator and complemented by a battery pack of 72kWh.

Since the GT39 is meant for permanent, long-term living on the road, it comes with four-season climate control, along with smart home technology, and Starlink connectivity. Living Vehicle is now taking orders for the new GT39, but the pricing for the model is undisclosed. If interested, you would have to get in touch with the company for a quote.

This article is part of our Design special section about creating space with the look and feel for one person.

These days, the Dutch entrepreneur Rick Vintage lives alone on an old boat, a 75-foot-long vessel from 1895 called “Vrouwe Jacoba” (Mrs. Jacoba, in Dutch) on a canal in a quiet corner of Amsterdam. It is moored in front of a 4,800-square-foot garden that contains a tiny house, now inhabited by his daughter Lux, 18, who comes on board mornings for coffee before dashing off to school. He lives with his dog, Moos. There are no passers-by, and he often dines alone on the deck. “I’ve always been a bit of a hermit,” he said in a video call from the Netherlands.

But it was not always so for Mr. Vintage, whose life was strikingly different only a few years ago. He founded his wallpaper business NLXL in 2010 with his wife, Esther Vintage, starting with images of wood planks for their beach house. “I put planks on the scanner, made prints and installed it in our living room,” he said. “I could smell it: This was going to be a worldwide success.”

But he worried that the design was too similar to work by Piet Hein Eek, whom he described as a design hero. “So I decided to send him a message to ask if he’d be interested in working with us.”

A long canal boat with a navy hull and an open deck with seating moored beside a garden framed by two trees.

They became partners on the design, called Piet Hein Eek Scrapwood Wallpaper. “I always make sure, in advance, that with whom I work it’s fun to work with and might be a friend. It turned out to be one of the most joyful collaborations till now and we’re friends now,” said Mr. Eek in an email.

The Vintages expanded their offerings, adding digitally printed trompe l’oeil patterns, including embossed tin and weathered concrete, and the company became an overnight success. “We acquired 3,000 resellers in 70 countries in one year and a half. And I became rich,” he said. He got to meet many designers he admired, including the English fashion luminary Paul Smith, who said upon being introduced, “I know who you are. You’re the wallpaper guy.” (Mr. Smith would later put NLXL wallpaper in the windows of his New York store, as would Saks Fifth Avenue.)

At the time, he lived with his wife and two daughters in an 18th-century farmhouse in Voorburg, outside of The Hague. But the money and the fame turned him into, in his own words, “a bit of a prick.” The orders — and the cash — kept pouring in, and the company won numerous awards.

The Belgian designer Job Smeets recalled the time, in 2014, his company, Studio Job, and Mr. Vintage shared an Elle Deco International Design Award for their collaboration on a hallucinatory wallpaper, called Industry, patterned with skulls, machine cogs and missiles. The awards ceremony was in a luxury hotel in Milan, and the audience was filled with design legends like Alessandro Mendini and Gaetano Pesce.

“Rick took the mic,” Mr. Smeets recounted, “and instead of giving a speech, he spontaneously started to sing, in a really beautiful baritone kind of voice, a phonetic Italian song that sounded totally Italian, but all the words were made up. And the whole crowd went crazy, everybody standing ovation, and it was like the best thing ever.”

In those days, many people told Mr. Vintage he was special. “And I guess I started to believe that I was,” he said. He bought expensive cars — three Porsches in one year — and was flying around the world. It was time for a change, but not necessarily the one he had intended.

In 2016, he and Esther divorced and Mr. Vintage moved into an apartment in an ornate 1830 building in The Hague. It was boldly decorated with miles of designer wallpaper and clusters of trendy furniture, including a sleek Koen sofa by Piet Boon and Tree Trunk chairs by Mr. Eek. (Both Piets are Dutch designers and NLXL contributors.) There was also the ultimate display of bachelordom — fake plants, dominated by a surrealist Gufram cactus . The eye-catching space was written about extensively .

“Two years later I drove to a party in Rotterdam in my brand-new Porsche 911 GTS with my 20-years-younger girlfriend next to me,” he recounted. He was scared of the person he had become, he said, a man who didn’t know where his own daughters were. “This is when I really pulled the plug on all the traveling and all the glamour. And I started to live a different life. That’s how it all began.”

He split up with the girlfriend and spent the rest of the year on his Koen sofa, alone, with occasional depression and anxiety attacks. He wondered who he was without all the applause. “Somewhere, in the back of my head, I knew that I had always been very good at being alone, but I just didn’t remember how.”

Meanwhile, NLXL was losing a lot of money. Not only had Mr. Vintage taken a long hiatus from work after the divorce, but big and small companies had begun copying the collections. He sold his assets — including cars — to pay the bills and pared down the staff to just two people: he and his ex-wife.

Then came the pandemic; he contracted Covid. But somehow the enforced isolation become a comfort. “There I was — alone, broke, with Covid, no applause — and feeling better than ever,” he recalled.

He began to reconnect with his daughters. In 2020, Lux had just started studying music in college in Amsterdam, and he looked for a place in that city, but found everything in the central area “crazy expensive.”

He spotted an ad for a houseboat with a garden on the edge of town. With Lux and his other daughter, Ella, now 21, who lives with her mother in Voorburg and studies nutrition, he went to have a look. Twenty-four hours later, he owned it.

Life on the Vrouwe Jacoba wasn’t always accommodating, Mr. Vintage said: “The toilet didn’t flush, the heating didn’t work and there was leakage everywhere. The interior — which I had decided not to change — was mainly yellowish ’70s wood strips, and the kitchen didn’t even have a stove.”

So gradually, he made adjustments. Though he aspired to live without luxury, he still wanted a hot shower. He had the plumbing fixed and installed a wood-burning stove himself. “I invested in some good tools and started working,” he said. He eventually got proficient enough at DIY to build a comfortable kitchen. Because the boat is made of steel and lacked insulation, it was cold in winter. To combat this, he covered the floors with vintage rugs. There is, he said, “really an incredible difference between not having this on the floor and having these rugs on the floor.”

Much of the designer furniture, including the Gufram cactus, was too big for the boat, so he put it in storage and moved the Tree Trunk chairs out to the garden. He saw no reason to part with the Koen sofa on which he had spent so many hours; he simply cut off the side and back frame to make it fit. “I took a photo and sent it to Piet Boon to congratulate him on his newest sofa design,” he said.

Far from offended, Mr. Boon described Mr. Vintage in an email as “an entrepreneur who enjoys life to the fullest and has a knack for seizing opportunities. His trendsetting sensibilities mean he consistently brings fresh ideas to the table.”

Mr. Vintage said he misses having a girlfriend, but conceded that it can be difficult to find someone he can be alone with.

“I am grateful for the past relationship and current friendship I have with my ex-wife, Esther,” he said, “since she is the only one I can still be alone with.” Because he finds working alone much more challenging than living by himself, he and Esther meet to work together two mornings a week.

Still, he is hardly antisocial. “In summer, I cook outside on the deck,” he said. “Sometimes friends come over since my ship is the best place to have dinner when it’s warm. If it’s really hot, we jump in the water.”

Lux finds her living arrangement ideal. “I make music and write my songs here,” she wrote in an email about her 260-square-foot house on the shore. “I can sing as loud as I want. Living in a dorm, I wouldn’t be able to sing or play guitar.” In her father’s apartment in The Hague, there was always a lot of city noise, she recalled. “Here, I wake up to the sounds of birds — and I love it.”

In 2022, Mr. Vintage started a new company, Dorbll, an app-driven video doorbell. In the past, he was a workaholic, going to bed at 1 a.m., getting up at various times to answer emails from different world markets. Now he works more reasonable hours.

“I need time for me, my daughters, my friends, my dog,” he said. “I’m now 57, I make 10 percent of what I made before, I lead a comfortable, stress-less life, and I am very happy being by myself.”

Luxury Superyacht Interior Design Ideas

Luxury Superyacht Interior Design Ideas

Jonathan Holmes

Home decoration doesn’t have to be restrained to dry land abodes. For those who count a luxury boat as a second home, or have their sights set on being able to say so someday, superyacht interior inspiration becomes a hot topic. There are design principles that remain relevant whatever the shape, size and style of the property, such as harnessing natural light, but beyond that, superyacht interior design requires its own, shipshape decorating agenda.

Incorporating the structural elements

Boat interior design typically faces a few physical barriers that affect the aesthetic. Often, some of the necessary structural facets of the build are exposed, such as steel supporting girders in the centre of a room, or technical obligations like marked security exits and emergency lighting that need to be visible, but will detract from the room’s style.

The key is to turn these challenges into opportunities. In the case of the supporting columns, they can be transformed into elegant pillars with additional, dummy columns added to make a statement with strong symmetry.

Channelling natural light

Just as with houses on the shore, a luxury yacht interior is always going to be benefit from natural light pouring in. Many contemporary yachts are purposefully being designed to echo what you see in contemporary buildings – ceiling to floor sheets of glass. Or as close to that as they can.

Not only does this direct a greater degree of natural light into the yacht’s living spaces, but it challenges the traditional window design you’d see at sea, making them appear less stereotypically nautical.

Maximise the amount of light by using high-gloss, polished surfaces that will reflect the sun’s rays as well as oversized mirrors if the wall space allows. If the yacht’s windows are more traditional in their dimensions, avoid heavy window treatments like fully-lined, voluminous curtains that, even when pulled back, will block some of the natural light from entering.

Working with oddly shaped rooms

Many vessels have a matrix of unusually shaped rooms that can make living quarters feel cramped. One way to work around this to use glass instead so that there’s still the required support in place, but the walls become transparent, opening up the environment.

This takes a lot of planning with the shipyard and means creating a channel that holds the glass within the boat’s structure – it should be installed even before the flooring so that the wall flows smoothly through the floor. But if this degree of build isn’t passable or if you’re only concerned with decoration rather than the boat’s architecture, remember to stick to just a few colours and materials in your boat’s scheme.

By having walls, ceiling and designer furniture all in the same colour, they fuse together and make unusually shaped rooms appear less cumbersome. In the Martin Kemp Design interior, you see a focus on white and the same tone of wood used from room to room, which result in any awkward angles being smoothed out.

Make the most of the minimal square footage

Even on the grandest of super yachts (have a read of our Q&A with superyacht firm Bannenberg and Rowell for seriously grand boat design talk), space is always the biggest constraint. Practicality doesn’t have to overrule good looks, but the two do need to balance to achieve a harmonious interior. Nothing is more frustrating than when there’s not enough room to store belongings, so by ensuring there’s a considerable amount of clever, integrated storage, the less there is to line the corridors and litter any surfaces.

Other key design tips to not over-occupy minimal square footage include ensuring any electrical wiring and speakers for technology like music or entertainment systems is concealed in the boat’s walls with a flush finish if possible. With lighting , concentrate less on floor lamps and more on wall lights , ceiling lights and pendant lights . Look closer at the Martin Kemp Design yacht bedroom and you’ll notice there are bedside wall lights and shelves rather than lamps and tables, as well as lots of LED strip lighting that take up no room.

Luxury Superyacht Interior Design Ideas - Living Room Yacht Interior - LuxDeco.com Style Guide

Build in seamless storage

Attention to detail is always pivotal in interior design, because the smallest of touches can have a huge effect. In terms of a boat’s design, a strong example is making sure any storage is handleless.

Push-to-open mechanisms or cutout handles really do make a room feel far sleeker. The handle-free option combined with integrated storage that’s flush to the wall allows for significant fluidity. This doesn’t mean to say that every piece of storage has to be fitted. But try to bring in any freestanding items of storage in line with the architecture of the room. Follow any places where the walls come out and let them be your guide.

Looking back at the Martin Kemp Design bedroom, the chest of drawers doesn’t protrude past the wall on the left-hand side of the room, and in the twin bedroom, the bedside tables are at the same level as the bed frame which creates a seamless line.

Luxury Superyacht Interior Design Ideas - Twin Bedroom Cabin Yacht Interior - LuxDeco.com Style Guide

Working with low ceilings

Superyacht design almost always should seek to combat the notorious low ceiling environment. Boat ceilings can be as low as seven feet, so employ design trickery techniques that can give the illusion that they’re on the taller side.

Reflective materials used well will add lift and can even create a feeling of infinity when they’re used in a detail-oriented way. For example, in the Martin Kemp Design bedroom pictured, where there’s a combination of gloss paintwork and reflective panels laid in a chevron formation which draws the eye up and along.

Equally, dark colours used overhead with a reflective finish adds depth to the ceiling that’s hard to calculate – there’s no telling where it ends, and so the ceiling height feels lifted, like it might go on and on and on.

12 AFFORDABLE BOAT INTERIOR DESIGN IDEAS

When we first moved aboard, our sailboat interior was a mess and we didn’t have the money to update it . We wanted to go cruising and our priorities were things like new sails, rigging, fiberglass repair, and electronics.

As much as I wanted a beautiful boat interior it was impossible to justify hiring an interior designer or updating the upholstery when we didn’t even have a dependable bilge pump! Fortunately, I found some creative boat interior design ideas and was able to makeover our sailboat for next to nothing.

In addition to sharing our boat interior restoration ideas, I’ve included my favorite boat interior photos from Pinterest and Instagram to further stoke your inspiration!

A quick note that this post contains affiliate links (so if you purchase through a link we’ll earn a small commission). The opinions are our own.

1. START BY DEEP CLEANING

As un-fun as it might be, a deep clean is the cheapest way to radically brighten your interior. It’s especially affordable if you use homemade boat cleaners. Dirty boat upholstery, mildewed cabin liners, and salt-encrusted hatches made our boat feel damp, dark, and generally unpleasant.

Deep cleaning (after years of neglect) drastically improved the boat cabin’s appearance and gave me a better idea of where to focus our boat interior makeover.

  • Professionally launder your upholstery
  • Wipe down the cabin liners with vinegar to prevent mildew and mold
  • Wash hatches to maximize natural light
  • Clean under all the cabin soles and the edges of any rotting boards
  • Wash the walls and treat any wood with the appropriate wax, oil, or varnish
  • Scrub out the bilge to prevent that boaty smell.

2. INSTALL INTERIOR BOAT LIGHTS

One of the great challenges of sailboat interior design is lighting. I’ve always felt that living on our sailboat is like living in a basement apartment because it is totally lacking in natural light !

One of the quickest ways to brighten things up is to install marine LED lights. The key to making LED boat lights look great, is placement.

yacht interior decor

The 3 best places to places to put LED strip lights on a sailboat

1. Under counter lighting. They look especially nice under cupboards or overhangs because the light strip is hidden.

View this post on Instagram < New battery installed! Lights and radio work. There’s LED strip lights which are great, but in the future we may need to swap those out for the multi colored ones. Our house has party-mode, the boat should too! #catalina22 #sailing #boatlife A post shared by SV Buza Sasha (@sv_buza_sasha) on Jul 11, 2018 at 5:18am PDT

2. LED rope lights make great courtesy lights . Tuck strip lighting on either side of a walkway to help guests navigate in the dark.

Battery operated fairy lights look cute coiled in a jar of seashells and are another easy way to add decorative lighting because no wiring is required. For the same reason, Solar Luci lamps and Solar Luci strings are a great option for lighting the cockpit.

3. COZY-UP TO NEW BEDDING

Ditch those damp cotton sheets and invest in hydrophobic options like 100% polyester. If you have a vberth, quarter berth, or non-standard sized bed, you may want to spend a few extra bucks on custom fitted boat sheets.

I know many cruisers who swear by memory foam mattresses and the Hypervent mattress pad for preventing condensation. If you like duvets and comforters, consider a mulberry silk option because it’s mold and mildew resistant.

4. FRESHEN THE HEAD

Add a splash of color to a dark bathroom with cheerful microfiber towels , Or, if you don’t want to feel like you’re camping, try the more luxurious quick-drying Turkish towels .

Tie them in with a cute wall-mounted soap dispenser and a spill-proof whicking air freshener and you’re on your way

5. GO GALLEY GOURMET

  • Replace a rusted or dull faucet with a sparkling new one with a pull-down sprayer.
  • Splash-out with colorful dish towels
  • Use biodegradable loofas and scrubbies instead of plastic
  • Pick up non-breakable dishware and glassware in fun patterns and designs.
  • Create extra space with chopping board stove and sink covers
  • Add custom knife, wine, and spice racks
  • Add a green bar to keep greens fresh without a fridge

6. BOAT INTERIOR UPHOLSTERY IDEAS

Reupholstering a boat is the single most expensive part of a sailboat interior refit but it makes a huge difference. It costs thousands of dollars if you hire someone to do it. Fortunately there are a few tricks we used to avoid a full upholstery overhaul.

  • Fun throw cushions and blankets can give your interior new life (and cover stained or threadbare upholstery)
  • Packed out seat cushions can be easily fixed by inserting a layer of high-density foam and batting on top of the existing foam.
  • If your upholstery is in really bad shape you may want to sew elasticated cushion coverlets that go over the top side of the cushion (it’s also a good way to protect nice new upholstery from boat projects (see: dirt, grease, and sweat stains).
  • You can reupholster your boat for a fraction of the cost if you do the sewing yourself. It’s possible to score good deals on durable materials and marine-grade fabrics online. Also, if you’re not a sewer but you’re going cruising, you may want to bring your boat interior fabric with you and have the cushions sewn up in a place like Mexico or Fiji. We eventually had all of our saloon cushions sewn up for $100 USD in Ensenada, Mexico.

If you choose to reupholster your boat, look for boat interior upholstery fabric . You don’t have to worry (as much) about finding a waterproof or UV-resistant fabric (because it will be inside). However, always choose a synthetic fabric , heavy-duty nylon thread, and plastic zippers. Cotton will eventually rot and metal zippers will rust. You can get away with not using marine upholstery but natural fibers are a big no-no!

7. CUT A RUG

8. LOVE YOUR WALLS

Securely fasten art, photos, and souvenirs to your walls. Mirrors are great for creating the illusion of space.

Privacy curtains are also a good way to add a splash of color and are straightforward to make

There are more projects to do, but we’re enjoying the results so far! 9. WHITEN AND BRIGHTEN YOUR SAILBOAT INTERIOR

Painting panels in light colors can brighten and modernize a boat cabin and set off teak trim. We repainted our red and blue fiberglass bathroom white and it made the space feel much bigger. It also makes it easy to clean because you can see the dirt.

10. STOW SIMPLY WITH CUTE STORAGE SOLUTIONS

Boats are always short on storage space but a few decorative baskets and storage containers can really improve the look of the space while giving you more room to tuck things away.

11. FUN AND FUNCTIONAL WINDOW COVERINGS

12. CHOOSE A FUN FEATURE

Let your imagination run wild. A feature wall, table, or piece of artwork can really change the feel of a sailboat interior. Have fun with colors, patterns, and make your new floating home your own.

There’s some irony when it comes to looking at the hottest interior design trends for custom sailing yachts: much of the inspiration for today’s designs draw from the past – combined with modern innovation.

Interior designs that emphasize simplicity, balance, and natural materials are hardly revolutionary.  Quite the opposite.  But there is a new take and balance between old and new, iconic and innovative, that seems to provide the perfect balance for creating incredible interior spaces.

We’re exploring the top 7 trends in custom yacht design for 2023.

Natural Light and Connection Between Interior and Exterior Spaces

The use of larger windows is a trend that has been gaining popularity in yacht design in recent years, as yacht owners increasingly want to maximize their views of the surrounding environment and bring more natural light into their living spaces.

One way that yacht designers are incorporating larger windows is by using high-strength glass materials that can withstand the harsh marine environment. For example, tempered glass or laminated glass with multiple layers can provide the necessary strength and durability to withstand the wind, waves, and impact from flying debris.

In addition to using strong glass materials, yacht designers are also using innovative engineering techniques to maximize the size and placement of windows. Lightweight structural materials such as carbon fiber and titanium in the yacht’s construction, allow for larger windows without compromising the yacht’s structural integrity. In the photo of ANNA, above, the white-painted transverse structural knees are part of a carbon fabrication that strengthens the cabin and carries the mainsheet loads while blending into the classic joinery.

M ulti Functionality and Flex Spaces

The design for 68-ft CIRRUS comes from blending 40’s & 50’s era style. The large saloon is designed to provide long-term comfort and versatility with innovative vertical storage and a vaulted ceiling that includes panoramic angled glass as well as overhead skylights. Design by Stephens Waring under construction at Jim Betts Enterprises.

Owners are spending more time aboard their vessels and are adding to the list demands and programmatic needs. These include home-office, fitness centers, gourmet kitchens, and gathering places for family and friends to spend longer durations of time together.

Because space is at a premium on a yacht, designers are creating multi-functional spaces that can serve multiple purposes. For example, a seating area that can be converted into a bed or a dining table that can be lowered to create additional seating. Clever storage solutions are also being incorporated into yacht design to make the most of available space.

Old World Charm Meets Modern Sensibilities: Spirit of Tradition

44-ft ITALMUS blends a 1940’s vernacular into the stylistic details and overall aesthetic of the yacht. The interior styling and design is aimed to mirror the era with a theme of highly crafted raised paneling and elegant joinery detail of select quarter sawn mahogany and finished in satin varnis.  Design by Stephens Waring, built by Van Dam Classic Boats. Yacht designers have always had a particular reverence for heritage and history.  The notion of heading out to sea conjures images of bygone eras past.  Capturing that essence requires a balance that avoids becoming kitsch or contrived.  While mid-century design may be considered the hot design trend of 2023, as designers steeped in a Spirit of Tradition design philosophy, we feel we’ve never left the genre.

Spirit of Tradition designs embody some historically identifiable link, particularly expressed in the shape and aesthetic exhibited in the design form of the hull and superstructure. Equally important, a Spirit of Tradition vessel must embrace modern development in materials, construction methods, mechanical systems and naval architecture science. Without the Spirit in development, we’re left with only Tradition.

Natural Materials

Yacht owners by their very nature are drawn to water and the natural world, so it makes sense to incorporate natural elements such as wood, stone, and other organic materials in design. These materials create a sense of warmth and connect the interior spaces to the natural surroundings.

As experts in wooden boat design, we have long touted the benefits of timber for structural elements.  However, incorporation of hardwoods, as well as a growing trend in sustainable timbers, have become increasingly popular with owners looking to achieve aesthetic, durability, and sustainability objectives in interior design.

Other natural materials such as leather and wool are also being incorporated to add texture and comfort. These finishes not only look beautiful, but they are also durable to withstand the harsh marine environment.

Renovation and Restomods

yacht interior decor

The owner of Marilee (built in 1926) had the bold vision to create an interior that reflected the yacht’s century-long provenance while creating an open space below.  The team worked with Paul Waring of Stephens Waring Yacht Design, to create a traditional and properly constructed interior with an updated layout for relaxed, modern day use. Photo credit: Alison Langley

The popularity of restomods has been well established in the world of classic cars, but it has only recently grown in popularity in the world of yachting. Fortunately, this is changing with plenty of success stories to point to.  Restomods are ideal for owners looking for cost-effective transformations that maintain sentimental connections to vessels and deliver stunning customized spaces that can be more cost effective than new custom builds. They are also popular with owners who inherit family boats, but need more utility and comfort for future generations.

Historical interiors often lack the ergonomics and amenities most owners seek today.  Good restoration projects embrace as much of the original charm and character of the original design as possible while improving comfort and livability.  Upgrades to electrical systems, electronics and navigation, plumbing and propulsion systems are low hanging fruit.  The interior design aesthetics requires a careful and complementary approach which honors the original character while updating comfort, utility, and aesthetics.

Flexible Spaces for a Crew Cabin

yacht interior decor

65-ft ANNA’s design includes a unique pocket door system.  The design provides an easy way to expand square footage when the cabin  is not needed or to private a comfortable extra cabin or crew quarters when extra hands or guests are aboard. Design by Stephens Waring. Construction by Lyman Morse Photo credit: Alison Langley

Owners often struggle with the balance between the desire for a larger vessel with larger interior spaces and the challenge of maintaining a total vessel size (and cost) which is manageable.

As we get older the idea of managing and skippering our own vessel can come at the expense of enjoyment.  Hiring crew alleviates some of the operational challenges and burdens, but it also means sharing interior space with others.

Flexible crew cabins provide a cost effective way to optimize space for when crew is and isn’t aboard. One solution is the installation of pocket doors on sleeping quarters. This converts square footage from private berths (crew quarters) to main salon gathering space when doors are opened and transforms the space to private rooms for guests and crew when needed.

Smart technology

yacht interior decor

Yacht owners are increasingly interested in incorporating smart technology into their vessels. This includes lighting, climate control, entertainment systems, and security features that can be controlled remotely. Smart technology allows yacht owners to control the environment on board and manage energy consumption more efficiently. It also adds an extra layer of security by allowing the owner to monitor their yacht from afar.

8 Interior Design Firms Making a Splash in the Yacht World

From patricia urquiola to ken fulk, these high-profile designers are nixing traditional yacht interiors for free flowing designs with luxe furnishings., by andrew sessa.

Celebrated architects and decorators known for shore-side projects are increasingly taking to the water, where they’re proving they’re anything but “at sea.” Armed with high-profile yacht commissions, these designers are throwing the cookie-cutter layouts and tired aesthetic tropes of typical marine interiors overboard. Instead, they’re employing floorplans that flow more gracefully, luxe furnishings and blue-chip art that would feel at home in the most sophisticated urban pied-à-terre.

The force of this shift could be felt at September’s Monaco Boat Show, where new designers brought an outsider’s eye to the industry. One especially envelope-pushing case in point: Oceanco recently began an initiative to reimagine the super yacht from top to bottom, tapping forward-thinking Dutch interiors studio Tank as well as former Rolls-Royce design lead Giles Taylor to make it happen. While we wait to see, and sail on, what they’ll create, we’ve gathered an elite crew of star decorators, many brand-new to the life aquatic, whose genre-changing work is on the water right now.

This studio launched its superyacht arm, Njord , in 2020 to meet the needs of residential clients spending more time on the water during the pandemic. “They loved their yachts for a week or two, but the boats didn’t feel like home when you lived on them for months,” says cofounder and creative director Marie Soliman-Berglund, whose team set out to give the vessels that special ambience. Apart from adding decadent details such as decks from French flooring purveyor Oscar Ono and cutting-edge air-filtration technology, Njord created taller rooms, or the illusion thereof. The main saloon on the 249-foot Eden features a metallic fabric overhead and an opening to the floor above. Combined, the interventions give the space a “sense of height and elegance” that’s tricky to achieve in a ship’s tight quarters.

Patricia Urquiola

Italian yard Sanlorenzo recently built upon its award-winning aesthetic credentials by enlisting Spanish-born Urquiola for an ongoing collaboration. Featuring a travertine-encased central staircase of bronzed steel and oak and pieces from Urquiola’s own furniture collections, SD96 puts a refreshing focus on flowing spaces and open views. “I like working on projects where the client asks you to do something you’ve never done before,” says Urquiola, who notes that being “a beginner in the industry helped me propose my personal way of experiencing the boat, making sure that the usual comfort of a home is replicated in a smaller space.”

Bryan O’Sullivan Studio

Lauded for his recent work with Maybourne Hotels —including London’s Connaught , Berkeley and Claridge’s —the Irish-born O’Sullivan crafts superyacht interiors that incorporate his signature mix of custom pieces, midcentury furniture, curated artworks, rich textures and colorful accents. His 164-foot Mosaique and 221-foot Icon impress with such atypical nautical furnishings as a one-ton serpeggiante -marble soaking tub, a Vladimir Kagan glass-topped coffee table and curving sofa, Pierre Chareau lighting and custom pieces from Apparatus. Currently he’s at work on the full refit of a 230-foot yacht and annual updates to Icon .

Peter Mikic

Mikic , a former fashion designer, actually made his interiors debut at sea, crafting elements for London property developers the Candy brothers’ yacht in 2006, which led Elisabeth Murdoch to commission Mikic to decorate her entire 159-foot Elisabeth F. two years later. “I designed it in a way that was like an apartment,” he recalls of the vessel, which won awards at both the Monaco and Antigua boat shows. “I had almost no built-in furniture, which is crazy.” Today he continues to buck marine norms. Combining classic elegance with playful colors, patterns and textures, he gave a 109.5-foot yacht a bachelor-pad feel, and he’s now putting sheepskin-clad Fritz Hansen chairs and tufted boucle sofas on a 195-foot sailing yacht alongside contemporary British artworks by the likes of Bridget Riley.

Yale School of Architecture grads Eric Clough and Eun Sun Chun—whose projects include a 6,000-square-foot Houston penthouse and more than 150 Christian Louboutin boutiques— recently completed their first marine commission, a refit of Monte Carlo Yachts’ 105-foot MCY 105 for a client in Hong Kong. Chun and Clough selected surprisingly seaworthy fabrics from Loro Piana and Hermès , furniture by Blackman Cruz and Carl Hansen and lighting from the Urban Electric Co. One particularly homelike vignette finds classic Hans Wegner Wishbone chairs surrounding a French-walnut dining table under an abstract painting by Laurent Hours.

Foley & Cox

Founding principal Michael Cox and design director Zunilda Madera bring an acute appreciation of luxe details to yacht interiors (thanks in no small part to the decade Cox spent with Ralph Lauren ’s home brands). For the 152.5-foot vessel of a client whose homes in Monaco and Austria they decorated, the duo combined custom furniture from DeAngelis —including plush upholstered sofas with a depth and a softness that defy at-sea expectations—with finds from the Paris Flea Market . These idiosyncratic pieces, they say, bring a collected, eclectic patina to the yacht, reflecting the client’s personality.

Ken Fulk Halekai Deck

The deck aboard Halekai by Ken Fulk.  Courtesy of Ken Fulk

A consummate showman, Fulk just completed his first yacht interior, a wooden sailing vessel for longtime clients. It combines historic inspiration with whimsical contemporary twists. The ship’s name, Halekai, means “home on the sea” in Hawaiian, which points to the state of mind of both clients and design team. With Honolulu’s Iolani Palace as a jumping-off point, Fulk combined the European and the indigenous, creating such evocative details as carved teak doors and custom marquetry in teak and koa wood and embroidered headboards based on a royal Hawaiian wedding quilt.

Tara Bernerd

Known for designing hotels and restaurants from Chicago to Osaka, Bernerd first brought her signature industrial élan and masculine edge to the sea nearly a decade ago. “Yacht interiors so often veer towards the traditional,” she says. “We’ve sought to bring a fresh, contemporary, sporty feel with pale washed woods and beautiful linens mixed with textured fabrics.” On a just-completed 102-foot Sanlorenzo yacht, marble insets adorn built-in cupboards while panels of green onyx clad a bathroom’s walls and the front of the glam below-deck bar.

Coral Ocean superyacht interiors, designed by Sabrina Monte-Carlo

What drives and inspires superyacht interior specialists and what trends are coming?

Three superyacht interiors specialists tell Belle Rice where they find their creativity, and the trends they're predicting...

Interior design trends can come and go faster than a Williams Turbojet, and what can seem innovative and chic one moment can quickly become de rigueur. Luckily for the superyacht industry, the very best in marine architects and interiors specialists lead the pack in cleverly incorporating design trends in ways that ensure rooms stay stylish and timeless for years, not for just the next fleeting summer on the Med.

So, what drives and inspires the designers who create the chicest, most innovative spaces? It’s all about the clients, says Cana Gökhan, co-founder at Red Yacht Design . “Understanding [their] personalities, tastes, lifestyles and cultural backgrounds is crucial. Our main inspiration comes from nature and the sea, and we always use colours and textures, in particular, to create a harmonious atmosphere on board.”

For Vripack ’s Marnix Hoekstra in the Netherlands, inspiration is found as far from his desk as possible, exploring cities to discover new art. “I really like to step out of the little bubble which is our superyacht and interiors world, and what I’ve found is the best way to do that is to hit the streets. We call it the ‘trend walk’,” he says, “and what we do is go out and discover – London and Amsterdam have great areas where upcoming artists are creating their ideas and art. Typically they don’t have a lot of money to make expensive stuff, but they do have passion and a clear mind and vision as to why they’re making something.”

This gives him and the Vripack team a means to anticipate future trends, he explains. “It allows you to look at the zeitgeist, and then you find that in a couple of years that will extrapolate to the real world and all of a sudden, you see other companies picking [those trends] up in the mainstream.”

Coming from different walks of life and dotted about the globe, designers who specialise in the smartest of interiors all have at least one thing in common: a motivation to create fascinating design. “It’s all about making interiors interesting again, and fighting against bland, predictable looks,” says Manola Ballerio of Sabrina Monte-Carlo , noting with excitement that “rich, saturated, dopamine-inducing colours are back.”

Ultimately, though, you can always go back to basics to make sure you get it right. “It is challenging to consider practicality, function and aesthetics simultaneously in design,” says Gökhan, “and even in the age of all this ostentation, I am always looking for ways to simplify interior design. The concept of simplicity is my most significant source of inspiration.”

Trend alert

Auxiliary rooms.

“While the walk-in wardrobe was the dream room in every residence, we’re seeing a trend of new ‘auxiliary’ rooms, such as a china pantry next to the dining room or kitchen to showcase collectable tableware. Post-Covid-19, games rooms are also making a comeback, and we love a good entertainment room with a bar, pool table or foosball with landscaped wallpapers or great lights.” – Manola Ballerio, Sabrina Monte-Carlo

Sustainability

“A lot of new materials, art and finishes are emerging from the world of sustainability, durability, upcycling and recycling. We use recycled textiles for wallpapers, and on Project Zero we used a leather-like material invented in Germany that is made from beeswax and pine, which has the advantage (over faux leathers that are made from fruit) of smelling like a fresh forest.” – Marnix Hoekstra, Vripack

Deck layouts

“Recently, the front deck has come to the fore; we often see closed or semi-closed uses in this area, but it’s not been very popular until now. Sustainability will always be a critical issue across the industry, and we anticipate seeing more asymmetrical, exciting and beautiful private and open-plan deck layouts in the coming months.” – Cana Gökhan, Red Yacht Design

Superyacht Interiors: The Top Luxury Designs

Luxury Brands

Everyone knows that a yacht or superyacht is nothing without a luxury interior. Indeed, there’s now a whole range of interior designers who either specialize in or regularly create yacht interiors. So, how do you find the best projects? Here at Insplosion, we want to help. That’s why we’ve gathered a list of our top luxury superyacht interiors !

Yacht fans may also like: Sabrina Monte-Carlo: Famous Interior Designers of Monaco

Brigadoon | studio indigo.

Including the Brigadoon in this list is pretty mandatory. After all, this luxury yacht by Studio Indigo is an actual winner of the World Superyacht Awards 2019! Thus, this project is all about the grand but understated mid-century luxury decor. The flowers, the wood, and navy-colored details combine to make this into a pretty classic luxury boat interior. Indeed, it’s the beautiful and neutral harmony that truly takes this project to the next level.

Studio Indigo Yacht Brigadoon

Besides, it’s quite a practical design. As you can see, the bedrooms and closets are amazingly organized. It’s all about luxury, yes, but also about comfort and practicality. The high seas are no place for clutter, which can cause accidents in bad weather.

But, in contrast with the brown color palette, you have this lovely deck area. With its slightly japandi style influences, this is the perfect place to relax in at the end of a long day.

Aurora Borealis | Winch Design

The Aurora Borealis does justice to its namesake. Indeed, it is as white and bright of an interior as the aurora itself. However, there are all sorts of little decor elements which are reminiscent of the sea. Just notice the shell-shaped ashtray and sea-horse patterns on some of the pillows! Finally, the mid-century lighting really adds a nice touch to the ambiance.

Aurora Borealis Yacht by Wich Design

But there’s much more to admire. How do you like the lovely art deco bar? The lines themselves almost remind you of corals and shells. And the airy, light decor is just as present in the dining and living areas. While just as luxurious, this interior is much different from the Brigadoon’s.

Finally, we’ll leave you with this gorgeous view of the yacht’s deck at night. Once again, the seatings and patterns are chosen to be evocative of the ocean. It’s as gorgeous of a yacht design as you could ask for.

Superyacht Forever | St. Corona Interiors

If you’re looking for something equally light, but much more sober, look no further than Superyacht Forever . This creation by St. Corona Interiors also follows a white color scheme, but the decor elements aren’t quite as feminine. There’s not as much art deco influence here. The lines are much cleaner and simpler, almost minimalist compared to the glamour of the previous project.

ISaloni 2017: The Best Luxury Design Trends

The bar and living room area follow more or less the same route. Indeed, they favor light color schemes and clean, shapely lines. It’s all about practical luxury, functional without being quite minimalist.

Finally, we have the bedroom. While not opulent in the slightest, this room has the same sort of stylish beauty as the rest of the interior. Once again: you don’t want clutter on the high seas!

Logica | Martin Kemp Design

At last, we reach the Logica .  This project for a luxury yacht by Marin Kemp Design is everything our interior decor dreams are made of. Like the Aurora, it takes a much more art deco approach to superyacht interiors. The little metal details are just what we like to call luxury hardware!

Logica Yacht by Martin Kemp

The bedroom and living space designs follow very similar color schemes and strategies. Since you can’t have any clutter, it’s all about denoting luxury through the tiniest details.

Finally, you have the bathroom project, which is as light and gorgeous as the rest of the design. It’s a luxury bathroom through and through.

So, which of these superyacht interiors did you prefer?

The minimalist trend in yacht interiors focuses on creating spaces that are both sophisticated and functional, with a strong emphasis on open layouts, clean lines, and a neutral color palette. This approach not only enhances the sense of space within the yacht but also places a greater emphasis on the quality and craftsmanship of the materials used.

Sustainable Luxury

Sustainability is becoming a key consideration in luxury yacht design, with a shift towards eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient systems, and designs that minimize the environmental impact. This trend reflects a growing awareness among yacht owners and designers of the importance of preserving the marine ecosystem while enjoying its beauty.

Smart Yacht Technology

The integration of smart technology into yacht interiors is revolutionizing the way yacht spaces are experienced and interacted with. From advanced navigation systems to automated lighting, climate control, and entertainment systems, technology is enhancing comfort, convenience, and security on board.

Maximalist Accents

While minimalism dominates, there’s a rising trend of incorporating maximalist accents to inject personality and vibrancy into yacht interiors. This includes bold patterns, vibrant colors, and eclectic art pieces that stand out against more subdued backgrounds, offering a touch of opulence and individuality.

Connection with Nature

Designs that forge a deeper connection with the surrounding seascape are gaining popularity. Large panoramic windows, outdoor living spaces, and natural materials like wood and stone help blur the boundaries between the interior and the exterior, allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in the maritime experience.

In envisioning the latest trends in luxury yacht interior design, we imagine spaces that blend minimalism’s serene beauty with the individuality of maximalist accents. Picture interiors where sustainability meets luxury, crafted from eco-friendly materials, bathed in natural light through expansive windows that seamlessly integrate indoor comfort with the breathtaking vistas of the sea.

Bespoke Artistry and Craftsmanship

Customization is key in luxury yacht interiors, where bespoke artistry and craftsmanship take center stage. Themed Interiors

Themed interiors offer a way to transport guests to another world. Whether it’s an Art Deco glamour, a tranquil Zen retreat, or a Mediterranean villa, these themes can be woven throughout the yacht to create a cohesive and immersive experience. Careful selection of materials, colors, and artworks helps to fully realize these visions.

Multi-Functional Spaces

In the world of yachting, space is a premium commodity. Designing multi-functional spaces that can adapt to different needs—such as convertible dining and entertainment areas, or guest cabins that double as offices or studios—is a hallmark of smart luxury design. Innovative furniture solutions and spatial layouts play a crucial role here.

Outdoor-Indoor Living

Blurring the lines between outdoor and indoor living spaces enhances the connection with the marine environment. Expansive deck areas with comfortable lounging options, fold-down balconies, and glass walls that open completely transform the living experience, offering an unobstructed communion with the sea and the sky.

Wellness Centers

With a growing emphasis on health and well-being, luxury yachts are incorporating dedicated wellness centers. These spaces might include spas, saunas, gyms, and even onboard pools or yoga studios, designed with a focus on relaxation and rejuvenation, complemented by panoramic views to inspire and invigorate.

Lighting plays a pivotal role in setting the mood and accentuating the beauty of the interiors. Advanced lighting systems offer the ability to customize the ambiance of each space, from vibrant and energetic to soft and serene, enhancing the architectural features and design elements with just a touch of a button.

Eclectic Material Palette

Lastly, the use of an eclectic material palette adds depth and character to yacht interiors. Luxurious textiles, exotic woods, precious metals, and innovative composites can be combined in harmonious or contrasting ways to create visually stunning and tactilely rich environments.

Best Small Yacht Interior Design Ideas

Designing the interior of a small yacht presents unique challenges and opportunities to create a luxurious, functional, and inviting space. Despite the limited square footage, smart design strategies can transform compact yachts into stunning examples of efficiency and elegance. Here are some of the best small yacht interior design ideas that maximize space without sacrificing style.

Multi-Use Layouts

The key to maximizing small spaces lies in versatility. Designing multi-use layouts means every inch serves multiple purposes. For example, a dining area can easily convert into a lounge or an additional sleeping area with the right furniture. Fold-down tables, convertible sofas, and retractable surfaces are essential in achieving a functional yet flexible interior.

Small Yacht Interior Design Idea 1

Light and Airy Interiors

Creating a sense of spaciousness is crucial in small yacht interiors. Opt for light color palettes, reflective surfaces, and minimalist design elements to make the space feel larger and more open. Large windows and strategically placed mirrors can amplify natural light, enhancing the overall airy feel and connecting the interior with the surrounding seascape.

Small Yacht Interior Design Idea 5

Smart Storage Solutions

Effective storage solutions are vital to keep small yacht interiors uncluttered and organized. Custom-built units, hidden compartments, and multi-functional furniture (such as beds with storage underneath or ottomans with hidden compartments) help utilize every available space efficiently. These solutions ensure that essential items are stored neatly, keeping the living areas spacious and comfortable.

Small Yacht Interior Design Idea 2

Sleek and Simple Design Aesthetics

In small yacht interiors, less is often more. A sleek and simple design aesthetic, focusing on clean lines and uncluttered spaces, can make the interior feel more expansive. Selecting a few high-quality materials and finishes can add a touch of luxury without overwhelming the space. This approach also allows the beauty of the craftsmanship and the materials themselves to shine through.

Small Yacht Interior Design Idea 3

Use of Vertical Space

Don’t overlook the potential of vertical space. High shelves, wall-mounted storage, and tall cabinets can provide additional storage without taking up valuable floor space. This strategy not only helps in organizing belongings but also draws the eye upward, creating a sense of height and openness in the interior.

Small Yacht Interior Design Idea 4

How do I choose a yacht interior designer?

Look for designers with experience in maritime projects, a portfolio that resonates with your style, and a collaborative approach.

Can yacht interiors be eco-friendly?

Absolutely. Many designers now incorporate sustainable materials and energy-efficient technologies to minimize environmental impact.

How often should yacht interiors be updated?

While there’s no set rule, consider refreshing the interior every 5-7 years to maintain modernity and comfort.

Are smart technologies reliable on yachts?

Yes, with advancements in marine technology, smart systems designed for yachts are robust, offering convenience and enhancing safety.

How can I maximize space in a small yacht interior?

Utilize multi-functional furniture, smart storage solutions, and a minimalist design approach to create a spacious and organized environment.

In conclusion, luxury yacht interior design is a fine art that harmonizes functionality, aesthetics, and personalization, crafting spaces that are as majestic as the seas they navigate. Through innovative use of space, light, and materials, these designs offer a sanctuary of comfort and style, reflecting the unique identity of their owners while ensuring a seamless connection with the marine environment.

Room on yacht with intricate blue stone flooring and walls

Running from September 28 through October 1, the Monaco Yacht Show is the highlight of the global boat show circuit. This year’s edition promises to deliver plenty of buzzy debuts, headline-making yacht news, and high-design highlights. There are several new additions to this year’s event in Port Hercules including a sustainability hub and a gadget- and gizmo-filled adventure area , packed with new water toys and flashy supercars —it is Monaco , after all.

For denizens of design, the Yacht Design & Innovation Hub is returning for a second year, with presentations, galleries, and exhibits by yacht architects and designers. But, of course, the big boats steal the show. With yacht interiors that range from the classically nautical to the budget-blowing bonkers, these are the superyachts to have on your radar at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show.

An oversized chandelier defines the space in the informal dining room aboard Ahpo .

Lürssen, Ahpo

All eyes will be on the whopping 377-feet Ahpo , by Lürssen, when it debuts this year at the Monaco Yacht Show as the largest yacht in the port. Venice-based exterior and interior designer Nuvolari Lenard added plenty of personality and luxury to the vessel with oversized crystal light features, a hammam made of mosaics in the massive wellness area, and a grand staircase at the center of the yacht, crafted to resemble an olive tree.

Interiors of main deck lounge on a yacht

Blue accents channel the traditional nautical aesthetic.

Feadship, Rock.It

The 198-foot Rock.It is not short on style: Gleaming wood panels with creamy white leather inlays feature throughout; glowing white onyx contrasts with rich black Portoro marble; and the well-dressed owner’s cabin rivals the top suite of an old-world European hotel with a warm wood study and bathroom with a claw-footed tub. The refined design can be attributed to the Netherlands with Dutch shipyard Feadship behind the build and Dutch design studio Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design taking on the interiors.

Modern and laid-back, Come Together is effortlessly cool.

Amels, Come Together

Built in the Netherlands by Amels with interiors by London-based Winch Design, the 197-foot Come Together has soft and laid-back beach-y vibes with a dose of Southern California cool. Elements like bleached oaks, woven linen fabrics, cabinetry with natural coconut shell, and hair-on-hide leathers all unite to bring the natural world aboard this chic ship.

Crisp and clean, the interiors of Be Cool are to-the-point in a refreshing way.

Swan 98, Be Cool

There’s a fleet of around a dozen large sailing yachts on display at this year’s yacht show in the dedicated Sailing Yacht Area. One of the most notable new launches of the bunch is Swan 98 Be Cool  by Finnish shipyard Nautor’s Swan. The clean and crisp interior hull design by Genovese architect Misa Poggi embraces graceful nautical style and Scandinavian practicality with navy linen and cotton fabrics, dark oak, and handsome tobacco-hued leather.

Kokomo ’s interiors will speak to the minimalist.

Sunreef, Kokomo

Packed with cutting-edge green tech and ultralight solar panels, Sunreef’s newest catamaran  Eco 80 will be making waves at this year’s show. However, it’s the interiors of the 80-foot Kokomo (done in-house by Sunreef) that will impress the design lovers. Outfitted in cool and calm shades of white with rattan finishes and eucalyptus veneers, Kokomo is both on-trend and a complete classic.

Seating room with glassbottomed pool above it.

The glass-bottom pool is a highlight of the yacht.

Abeking & Rasmussen, B2

One of the largest vessels currently on the market, the 281-foot B2 by German yard Abeking & Rasmussen, will be showing off an ultra-chic over-$4-million interior refit just completed in July at this year’s show. Sprawling out over five decks, Winch Design has curated a serene floating sanctuary of indoor-outdoor living, the highlight of which is the main deck’s glass-bottom pool, stationed above the light-filled beach club lounge with fold-down balconies that extend the living space right to the water’s edge.

With dark wood, tubular steel accents, and black furnishings, the interiors of State of Grace could be described as a nautical take on the Bauhaus aesthetic.

Perini Navi, State of Grace

State of Grace by Italy’s Perini Navi is a gorgeous high-performance sailing sloop. It’s picture-perfect with polished teak decks, an ocean-blue hull, and billowing white sails. Inside is a study in midcentury-modern elegance with a split-level saloon and a spacious and full-beam owner’s suite with a hammam shower.

Soft furnishings can help establish a seaside feel throughout your boat . Reinvent seating, curtains, and bed linen by opting for classic nautical stripes in various hues – navy, white, and red being traditional favorites.

Embrace patterns displaying anchors , seashells , ropes , or other marine-associated objects.

Do bear in mind that synthetic fabrics prove better suited for maritime conditions, offering higher resistance to moisture and UV damage.

Key points:

  • Opt for stripes in hues of navy, white, and red.
  • Use patterns featuring anchors , seashells , ropes .
  • Choose synthetic fabrics for higher resistance to maritime conditions.

Compact Foldable Furniture

compact foldable furniture

Maximization of small spaces is crucial onboard boats. Hence the need for furniture that can condense or collapse when not in use emerges.

Key points include:

  • Sofa-beds that double as seating during the day and sleeping quarters at night.
  • Nesting tables proving useful for both entertainment and dining pursuits, easily tucked away when not in use.
  • Chairs that fold flat against the wall significantly reducing their footprint.
  • Extendable counters providing an additional workspace in the galley, yet retractable to maintain unobstructed walkways.
  • Fold-down desks serving as temporary workspaces, disappearing against the wall after office hours.

The incorporation of such elements results in a layout that’s amazingly flexible, with each piece serving more than one function, thus conservatively using the limited available space.

Maritime Artwork and Decor

Key elements to consider:

  • An antique sailor’s map, a variable piece that could be hung as a focal point.
  • Brass ship bell, a classic touch to transport your space back in time.
  • Coastal paintings, a subtle nod to marine life can add an artistic feel.
  • Fish net decor, a trendy, lightweight accent that can be applied virtually anywhere.
  • Marine animal sculptures, a great blend of art and passion for the sea.
  • Repurposed ship items such as a wheel or porthole mirror, these add a distinctive nautical charm while still being functional.

Hardwood Flooring With Compass Rose Inlay

hardwood flooring with compass rose inlay

– It embodies the spirit of navigation, often a symbol in maritime tradition. This imprinted emblem in your wooden floors celebrates the mariner in you.

– Placement is crucial. The most impactful location would be the central area, an immediate catch to any eye venturing inside.

– Select hardwood for its durability and elegance. Options like oak, teak, or mahogany suit well due to their resilience in varying boat conditions.

– Collaborate with a skilled woodworker. Precision is necessary as the beauty lies in intricate detailing of the compass rose.

– Finish with a high-quality sealant. This adds longevity and shine to your flooring while protecting it from potential water damage.

– Remember to maintain. Regular cleaning ensures the inlay continues to be the attention-grabbing centerpiece of your boat interior.

Convertible Dining Cum Bed Space

convertible dining cum bed space

Implementing smart designs tailored for convenience and functionality is paramount in optimizing boat interiors. A convertible dining space that doubles as a sleeping area exemplifies this concept perfectly.

  • Multifunctionality: Fusing a place to eat with a place to sleep efficiently conserves space.
  • Comfort: Ensure practicality is complemented by comfort. Opt for thick foam cushions easily reconfigurable between dining and sleeping arrangements.
  • Design: Stick to a design that complements the nautical theme, echoing the overall interior aesthetics.
  • Storage: Opt for designs with hidden storage compartments under the seating area to utilize space efficiently.
  • Material: Use marine-grade fabric resistant to UV rays, mildew, salt, and other elements unique to nautical conditions.

Bright Color Palette for Spacious Feel

bright color palette for spacious feel

A considered choice of bright colors can trick the eye, imparting an illusion of a larger space. Opt for lighter hues like sky blue , soft yellow , and cream that reflect light and make your boat interior appear airy and open.

1. Sky Blue: Reflects the open sea and sky, enhancing the sense of space.

2. Soft Yellow: Mimics sunshine, amplifying light and space.

3. Cream: A neutral choice that bounces light around the room.

4. Accent Colors: Small dashes of bolder shades, like red or navy, can add depth without compromising the overall spacious feel.

5. Color Consistency: Keep the same palette throughout the boat to maintain a unifying, expansive feel.

6. High-Gloss Finishes: High-gloss paint or finishes can further reflect light, augmenting the spacious effect.

7. Contrast: Use contrasting colors on trims or moldings to define edges and give the illusion of depth.

Applying these insights can metamorphose a cramped boat into a bright and seemingly larger living space.

Under-seating Storage Solutions

under seating storage solutions

Utilize bench seats with removable tops for easy accessibility.

Cushioned corners to avoid injuries during turbulent journeys.

For sections beneath the seat, built-in dividers will help organize items more efficiently.

Installing a lock on each storage compartment ensures better security.

Maintain a small gap between the bottom of the seat and the storage base to avoid damage from possible water ingress.

Opt for marine-grade materials for durability in the salty, humid environment onboard.

The use of soft-close hinges gives a luxury feel and prevents slamming, reducing damage and noise.

Desk areas can also adopt under-seating storage by integrating drawers under each seat.

Use sliding doors for the under-seat storage to optimize space while maintaining easy access.

Padded lids can offer additional seating when entertaining guests.

Ceiling Fishing Rod Holders

1. Space-saving: Utilizing overhead space which is often underused.

2. Preservation: Prevents potential damage or warping to rods.

7. Capacity: Can hold several rods depending on size and structure.

8. Flexibility: Adjustable for rods of different lengths and thicknesses.

Indoor Hanging Hammock

indoor hanging hammock

Installation of an indoor hanging hammock can bring a relaxing, laid-back beach vibe to your boat interior. It should be carefully positioned to avoid disturbing the boat’s balance. Easily mountable points on the ceiling are recommended.

  • Multipurpose: Perfect for lounging or an extra sleeping berth.
  • Space-saving: Folds away when not in use.
  • Durability: Materials resistant to saltwater corrosion.
  • Comfort: Accommodating various hammock materials (rope, cloth).
  • Style: Range of colors and patterns to suit decor.
  • Safety: Appropriate supports for weight capacity.

Remember, a bad hammock installation could inadvertently cause structural damage to the boat’s hull or superstructure. Opt for professional help if you’re unsure of the installment procedure.

Porthole Windows for Natural Light

porthole windows for natural light

Maximizing the ingress of daylight, these circular windows add a charming nautical touch. Their position diversely enhances spatial illumination, giving the boat interior a bright, warm appeal.

  • Elucidating underutilized corners with angled light.
  • Adding uniqueness with customized window frames.
  • Enhancing sea views from the inside.
  • Creating an illusion of expanded indoors.
  • Ensuring privacy as required.
  • Enabling excellent ventilation.
  • Facilitating flexibility with operable windows.

Remember, the strategic positioning and the right sizing of portholes deliver the optimal natural light, adding openness to the boat’s interior. Pairing them with compatible window treatments ensures utility in varying light conditions.

LED Light Strips for Ambiance

led light strips for ambiance

Opting for LEDs opens up a spectrum of opportunities to match the mood or time of day.

1. Available in a spectrum of colors, hence offer personalized control over mood lighting.

2. Energy-efficient and offer pronounced battery savings for those long sailing trips.

3. Waterproof options hold up well against moisture and are durable in a marine environment.

4. Flexible and slim, they can illuminate tricky nooks and crannies without taking up space.

5. Strips with remote controls allow easy customization of brightness, color, and transition effects.

  • Hang strategically as tie-backs for draperies.
  • Wrap around poles or railings for firm hold and aesthetic appeal.
  • Employ for nautical-themed centerpieces with sea glass and driftwood.
  • Combine with metallic hooks to act as functional coat hangers.
  • Contrast thick braided ropes against stark walls to create feature walls.

Remember the goal is subtlety with the coastal vibe; avoid overuse.

Skylights for Stargazing

skylights for stargazing

Transforming the roof of your boat into a window to the cosmos, skylights dramatically amplify the perception of space inside your small cabin or room.

Here are some key aspects of this:

  • 1. Calls for professional installation to maintain watertight integrity.
  • 2. Use of marine-grade materials vital for resistance against corrosive salty air.
  • 3. Positioning matters , ideally away from masts, riggings, or any sailing apparatus.
  • 4. Go for reinforced safety glass to withstand weather conditions and seagull landings.
  • 5. Shading or blackout options should be integrated for daytime comfort.
  • 6. Choose from stationary, manually operable or electrically operable skylights based upon budget and preferences.
  • 7. Cleaning accessibility needs to be considered.

As dusk creeps in, lie back and watch the constellations play out their ancient stories through your skylight. It’s a luxury not many aboard can boast.

Thematic Boat Name Signage

2. Reflects the personality or a story associated with the boat.

3. Adds aesthetic value to the interior.

4. Crafted typically from brass, wood, or acrylic.

7. Weather-resistant materials for durability.

8. LED-backlit options for a modern touch.

9. Customizable sizes to suit different spaces.

10. Easy installation with minimal tools.

Vintage Marine Maps As Wallpaper

Transforming an ordinary wall within your boat into a focal point of conversation can be achieved through the utilization of vintage marine maps. These elements not only add an authentic nautical ambiance but also bring a sense of history into your space.

Key points to consider:

  • 1. Selecting maps based on regions significant to your maritime travels.
  • 2. Deciding on a wall that provides substantial visibility to showcase the map.
  • 3. Ensuring the map is properly sealed and protected to preserve its antique quality.
  • 4. Consulting a professional for wallpaper application to assure longevity and adherence.
  • 5. Opting for a complementary color scheme to accentuate the map.

The introduction of marine maps not only adds vintage charm but successfully introduces a geographical narrative aboard your vessel.

Display of Antique Navigational Equipment

display of antique navigational equipment

Incorporating maritime pieces adds an authentic touch and visual interest to the boat’s interior.

  • Antique sextants , astrolabes or compasses can be intimately connected with your seafaring roots.
  • Vintage topographic charts or sea scrolls provide decorative intrigue when framed and hung.
  • Brass telescopes or ship wheels offer a whimsical and eye-catching centerpiece.
  • Antique lanterns serve as functional, atmospheric lighting, creating a warm, comfy aura.

Care should be taken to securely mount these pieces to withstand rocking and jostling while at sea, maintaining their original charm without any risk of damage.

Teak and Holly Sole for Traditional Touch

Combining the rich warmth of teak with holly strips’ cool touch paves the way for an eye-catching design and a welcoming atmosphere.

The use of total solid hardwood ensures high durability – a vital feature for yacht flooring, with considerations such as foot traffic and exposure to saltwater.

Additionally, the material’s inherent non-skid properties add to its practical appeal.

  • Promotes a natural and hearty ambience.
  • Combines warmth of teak with cool holly strips.
  • Solid hardwood increases durability.
  • Non-skid properties for safety.
  • Resistant to saltwater and brackish environments.

Built-in Aquarium for Aquatic View

built in aquarium for aquatic view

A truly captivating design element, the built-in aquarium merges the beauty of the underwater world with innovative interior design. Prioritize these concepts when considering this addition:

  • Placement: Port or starboard side, ensure ample natural light filters through to display the aquatic life.
  • Species Selection: Opt for saltwater or freshwater fish that require low maintenance and offer vibrant hues.
  • Size: Match the aquarium size with available space and boat stability, bearing in mind the need for regular cleaning and water changes.
  • Lighting: Install LED lights for night view and to highlight the colors of fish and coral.
  • Integration: Embed the aquarium seamlessly into the boat’s structure, probably forming part of a divider between areas.
  • Maintenance: Plan for an easy-to-access maintenance hatch and consider automated feeding and cleaning systems.
  • Safety: Use toughened, marine-grade glass and secure sealing to prevent leaks or breakages.

Incorporating a built-in aquarium can create a mesmerizing focal point that invokes a sense of peace and fascination, enhancing the overall experience of life aboard.

Brass and Glass Fittings for a Retro Vibe

  • Opt for glass tables with brass bases for a luxurious lounging area.

The beauty of brass and glass fittings lies in their ability to seamlessly merge with other decor elements. Whether the overall design scheme of the boat is minimalistic or opulent, these fittings are sure to add a sparkle and vibe that spells retro.

Integrated Mini-bar for Entertaining

It’s essential to optimally utilize compact spaces aboard. An integrated mini bar serves this purpose effectively and augments the entertaining possibilities.

1. Custom-built cabinetry that includes bottle slots, wine coolers, and glass racks.

This beautiful narrowboat interior shows how to create all the charm of a country cottage on the water. Beautiful unfinished timber floorboards, a cast iron wood burner and rustic cabinetry work together for a coherent look.

Every detail here has been carefully chosen – note, for example, the old-fashioned whistling kettle and rag rug. The result is the perfect space to relax and unwind.

4. Classic Cream

Classic Cream

Below deck spaces can be dark, but that’s not the case with this beautiful interior. Although the area is quite small, the use of cream counters and soft furnishings creates a light, airy space.

The polished furniture also helps reflect the light. And curved edges ensure there’s nothing to injure passengers as they move around the cabin.

Clean surfaces and minimalist door furniture add to the sense of space. And we love the clever way a room divider doubles as extra workspace for the kitchen.

5. Comfortable Curves

Curves can be particularly striking in boat interiors , working well with the lower ceiling heights. Here, a table is surrounded by a sofa that, together with a separate bench, almost forms a circle.

This is another case where powder blue has been chosen for the upholstery. Blue is a favorite for maritime interiors, and the pale shade works beautifully in darker spaces.

6. Social Space

We love the sociable feel that’s been created inside this elegant sailboat. Two curving sofas with tables provide a comfortable space for people to get together over food and drinks.

Here a white ceiling and pale floor help bounce the light around. That’s allowed a darker shade of blue velvet to be used on the sofas, creating a luxurious feel. Subtle detailing like the chevron woodgrain on the wall panels adds to the upscale finish.

7. Compact and Comfy

This super-elegant interior shows how a neutral color scheme effortlessly creates a feeling of sophistication. The gray and cream cushions work beautifully with the honey-toned cabinetry and flooring. Details like the gray rug tie everything together.

We love the wall-mounted wood-burning stove too. It’s a great way to create a cosy atmosphere without taking up valuable floor space.

10. Spotlight on Luxury

Spotlight on Luxury

Lighting can add a whole new dimension to your boat interior . In this stylish cabin, an array of spotlights on the ceiling highlight sparkling accents like the chrome pedestals. The contrast with the matte upholstery creates a feeling of high-end glamor.

And this is another interior where opposing seating creates a sociable space. This would be the perfect spot to get together for evening drinks.

11. Glamorous Cruising

Glamorous Cruising

The curved lines and quality finish in this glamorous cruiser interior make the best of every inch of space. And a combination of recessed spotlights and downlighters creates a snug and cosy atmosphere.

Adding plants can be a very effective way to add softness to what might otherwise be a masculine space. Here a small potted ivy brings a touch of shore-life below deck.

12. Dramatic Contrasts

Dramatic Contrasts

We love the way this cruiser interior uses strong colors for a dramatic look. There’s no sign of the usual marine blue here. Instead, black wall cabinets and sofa backs contrast with cream upholstery and white walls.

The look works because the dark shades don’t overpower the space. The lower cabinets are finished in natural wood, and the countertops are white. And there are plenty of spotlights at both floor and ceiling height to maintain the light levels.

13. Dual Levels

Dual Levels

This luxurious yacht interior shows how using different levels can get the best from a small space. An upper platform provides a comfortable lounging spot, whilst the kitchen and dining area are below. And whilst they’re right next to each other, the varied heights provide an illusion of space.

The caramel upholstery, polished wooden cabinetry and white walls work beautifully together. The result is a calm and relaxing cabin.

14. Maritime Chic

Maritime Chic

This interior is open to the elements. That means everything here has to be weatherproof – as well as smart enough to impress passers-by!

The navy and white pinstriped upholstery looks super-smart, as well as hiding any stains. And the contrast with the white walls and polished wood creates a luxurious and unmistakeably nautical look.

15. Contemporary Kitchen

Contemporary Kitchen

This stylish contemporary kitchen shows you don’t need a large space to include showstopping design elements. We love the contrast between the walnut cabinetry and white walls. And adding spotlights around the top of the cupboards turns the whole kitchen into a focal point.

Clever touches make the most of the available space. Mounting the microwave on the wall frees up counter space. And the basin cover provides extra room for food preparation.

16. Luxury Facilities

Luxury Facilities

Few things spell out luxury on your boat quite as well as a stylish head! And this boat interior has it in spade s.

The staircase separates a commode and basin from a wet room, all with matching fixtures. A large mirror helps create a feeling of space in the WC. And spotlights in the ceiling provide bright light without impeding headroom.

Plants work particularly well in bathrooms – on water as well as on land. Here a small plant in a rattan container adds to the spa-like feel.

17. Blonde Ambition

Blonde Ambition

Pale wood can create a stunning interior, as in this attractive cabin. The blonde tones don’t absorb the light, and they look great punctuated with contrasting dark doors.

The small kitchen nevertheless manages to fit in a good-sized fridge and freezer. Its stainless steel doors work perfectly with the metal surrounds and frosted glass of the wall cupboards.

18. Superior Lounging

Superior Lounging

We love the way the generous interior space here has been given over to luxury. The two modular low-level sofas follow the lines of the boat, leading the eye out onto the deck. Mounting the TV at an angle allows it to be viewed by those in any seating position.

The central table is hinged to provide an extra-long surface, but it’s narrow enough not to obstruct walkways. And we love its decorative compass motif.

19. Light Fantastic

Light Fantastic

This cleverly styled interior showcases how effective lighting can be at creating zones within your space.

The downlighting in the kitchen area provides a bright space that’s perfect for cooking and washing up. But in the lounge area, the lighting is more subdued, creating a tranquil and relaxing ambience.

20. Stylish and Elegant

Stylish and Elegant

This fabulous boat interior has all the elegance and comfort of a high-end hotel.

The look is achieved by keeping the color scheme simple and consistent. Walls, carpet and upholstery are all the same shade of cream. Cabinetry and beams are all finished in the same honey-colored teak.

An entertainment center and cabinets act as functional yet beautiful room dividers. And generous sofas invite you to kick off your shoes and relax.

21. Silver Accents

Silver Accents

This unusual interior shows that bold choices can work brilliantly. Galvanized metal trunks make striking coffee tables, while aluminum panels on the armchairs add to the space age look.

The silver tones are replicated in the rug, and even in the outdoor seating on deck. The result is both unique and stylish.

22. Captain’s Table

Captain’s Table

In this boat interior, the captain’s seat is integrated with the on-board living area. Matching cream upholstery on both the captain’s chair and adjacent sofa keeps the space feeling coherent.

Spotlights cast a warm glow over the space, making it feel snug and cosy. And cabinets along the side walls provide plenty of discreet storage.

23. Smooth Transitions

Smooth Transitions

We love the way this elegant interior transitions smoothly onto the deck , creating a feeling of space. Smart chrome accents add sparkle – whether from the stylish table legs, the kitchen faucet, or the cabinet handles.

The cream cabinets have a smart gloss finish to bounce around the light. The contrast with the matte cream upholstery makes the sofas seem even more inviting.

24. Glossy Finish

Glossy Finish

This interior highlights the way that combining matte and gloss finishes can create a feeling of luxury. The woodwork here has a deep lacquer – almost a mirror finish. It could appear gaudy, but against the matte cream sofas it instead looks incredibly classy.

A couple of cushions add a pop of color to the design scheme. And a white ceiling with multiple spotlights adds a sense of height.

25. Cool Blue

Cool Blue

In this interior, blue accents are paired with white leather upholstery to create a classic nautical palette. The blue here appears in the accessories – everything from a sweet ceramic vase to elegant rugs, cushions and throws. The result is a crisp, fresh look.

A glass-topped coffee table is both useful and beautiful. Chrome legs mirror the guardrail beyond the windows. And because the light travels right through the glass, it doesn’t interrupt the flow of the space.

26. Ultra High End

Ultra High End

The interior of this luxury yacht shows what can be achieved if money is no object. All the items of furniture here are one-off creations. We adore the unusual bar and matching coffee table, their curves reminiscent of a beehive.

Cream leather upholstery tones perfectly with the blonde wood. And large vases of orchids enhance the glamorous look.

27. Space for Entertaining

Space for Entertaining

This spacious interior includes several features we’ve seen in other schemes. Luxurious cream leather upholstery? Check. Highly varnished surfaces? Check. And a glass topped coffee table to avoid the space looking cluttered. Check, check, check.

But there are quirkier touches too. We love the metallic upholstery on the 1920s shaped armchairs. And the spectacular chandelier above the dining table is a pleasing addition to the more usual spotlights.

This interior shows that you can mix different design ideas to create a unique and spectacular result.

INTERIOR DESIGN is a multi-faceted profession in which creative and technical solutions are applied within a structure to achieve a built interior environment. These solutions are functional, enhance the quality of life and culture of the occupants, and are aesthetically attractive.

INTERIOR DESIGNER implies that there is more of an emphasis on Planning, Functional design and effective use of space involved in this profession, as compared to interior decorating. An Interior Designer can undertake projects that include arranging the basic layout of spaces within a building as well as projects that require an understanding of technical issues such as acoustics, lighting, temperature, etc. Although an Interior Designer may create the layout of a space, they may not build the space without having their designs stamped for approval by an architect, which is why many Interior Designers also complete school to become architects as well. An Interior Designer may wish to specialize in a particular type of interior design in order to develop technical knowledge specific to that area. Types of interior design include residential design, commercial design, universal design, exhibition design, spatial branding, etc.

Top trends in luxury yacht interior design

Luxury yacht interior design is constantly evolving, embracing new trends to create stunning and functional spaces that cater to the desires of discerning clients. One notable trend in yacht interiors is the use of sustainable materials, reflecting a growing awareness of environmental responsibility within the industry. Another popular trend is the incorporation of smart technology, seamlessly integrating features like automated lighting and climate control for enhanced comfort and convenience.

In terms of aesthetics, contemporary minimalism continues to be a favored style among yacht owners, with clean lines and neutral color palettes creating a sense of calm sophistication. On the other end of the spectrum, there’s also a resurgence of classic glamour in yacht design, with luxurious fabrics, ornate details, and rich textures evoking a sense of timeless elegance on board.

From innovative layouts to cutting-edge decor elements, staying ahead of these top trends ensures that luxury yacht interiors remain at the pinnacle of sophistication and style.

Material and design choices for yacht interiors

Choosing the right materials and designs for yacht interiors is crucial in creating a luxurious and stylish space that reflects your personal taste and lifestyle. From opulent marble countertops to sleek stainless steel fixtures, every detail contributes to the overall aesthetic of your yacht’s interior.

When it comes to materials, consider durable yet elegant options like teak wood flooring or leather upholstery for a timeless look. Incorporating high-quality fabrics and finishes will not only enhance the visual appeal but also ensure longevity in a marine environment.

In terms of design choices, think about maximizing natural light with large windows or incorporating innovative lighting solutions for ambiance. Selecting a color palette that complements the ocean views can create a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Whether you prefer modern minimalism or classic elegance, the key is to balance functionality with aesthetics to achieve an inviting and sophisticated yacht interior that suits your unique style preferences.

Popular interior styles for yacht furnishing

When it comes to interior styles for yacht furnishing, there are a few popular options that exude luxury and sophistication. One classic style is the nautical theme, featuring navy blues, whites, and touches of gold or brass accents to create a timeless maritime ambiance.

For those seeking a more modern look, contemporary design with clean lines and neutral colors like grey or beige can provide a sleek and elegant aesthetic onboard. Incorporating state-of-the-art technology seamlessly into the design can elevate the overall experience.

Alternatively, an eclectic style mixing different textures, patterns, and colors can add personality and vibrancy to the space. Think bold artwork pieces paired with plush velvet furnishings for a stylish yet cozy atmosphere that feels like home away from home on the open seas.

No matter which style you choose for your yacht furnishing, creating a harmonious blend of comfort, functionality, and aesthetics is key to achieving a truly luxurious onboard experience.

How to design the perfect layout for your yacht

Designing the perfect layout for your luxury yacht is a crucial step in creating a comfortable and functional space that reflects your personal style. Start by considering the flow of the space – ensure there is enough room to move around freely without feeling cramped.

Think about the purpose of each area on the yacht – from dining and lounging to sleeping quarters and entertainment spaces. Each area should serve its own unique function while seamlessly connecting with the rest of the layout.

Utilize natural light to create an open and airy feel onboard. Large windows, skylights, or even glass floors can bring in plenty of sunlight and offer stunning views of the surrounding waters.

Consider incorporating versatile furniture pieces that can easily transform to suit different needs throughout the day. Opt for sleek designs that maximize space without compromising on style.

Lastly, don’t forget about outdoor areas! Designing a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces will enhance your overall yachting experience as you enjoy breathtaking sunsets or dine al fresco under the stars.

Clever storage solutions for yachts

When it comes to designing the interior of a luxury yacht, clever storage solutions are key. With limited space on board, maximizing every inch is essential for both functionality and aesthetics.

One smart storage solution often seen in yachts is utilizing hidden compartments beneath seating areas or within walls. This not only saves space but also maintains a clean and uncluttered look throughout the yacht.

Another popular option is incorporating multi-functional furniture pieces that serve dual purposes, such as a coffee table with built-in storage or a bed frame with drawers underneath. These innovative designs help minimize clutter while adding practicality to the living spaces.

Vertical storage solutions like tall cabinets or shelving units can also make use of otherwise wasted space, providing ample room for storing belongings without sacrificing floor space.

Overall, integrating these clever storage solutions into the design of a yacht ensures that everything has its place, creating a harmonious and organized environment for passengers to enjoy their time at sea.

Luxury yacht interior design is truly an art form that combines creativity, functionality, and elegance. From incorporating the latest trends to selecting the perfect materials and styles, designing the interior of a yacht requires careful planning and attention to detail.

By following top trends in luxury yacht interior design, creating a layout that maximizes space, choosing high-quality materials and stylish designs, as well as implementing clever storage solutions, you can transform your yacht into a luxurious floating oasis.

Whether you prefer a modern minimalist look or a classic nautical style, there are endless possibilities when it comes to designing your yacht’s interior. So let your imagination run wild and create a space that reflects your personal taste and lifestyle while enjoying the ultimate luxury on the open seas.

YEKATERINBURG: FACTORIES, URAL SIGHTS, YELTSIN AND THE WHERE NICHOLAS II WAS KILLED

Sverdlovsk oblast.

Sverdlovsk Oblast is the largest region in the Urals; it lies in the foothills of mountains and contains a monument indicating the border between Europe and Asia. The region covers 194,800 square kilometers (75,200 square miles), is home to about 4.3 million people and has a population density of 22 people per square kilometer. About 83 percent of the population live in urban areas. Yekaterinburg is the capital and largest city, with 1.5 million people. For Russians, the Ural Mountains are closely associated with Pavel Bazhov's tales and known for folk crafts such as Kasli iron sculpture, Tagil painting, and copper embossing. Yekaterinburg is the birthplace of Russia’s iron and steel industry, taking advantage of the large iron deposits in the Ural mountains. The popular Silver Ring of the Urals tourist route starts here.

In the summer you can follow in the tracks of Yermak, climb relatively low Ural mountain peaks and look for boulders seemingly with human faces on them. You can head to the Gemstone Belt of the Ural mountains, which used to house emerald, amethyst and topaz mines. In the winter you can go ice fishing, ski and cross-country ski.

Sverdlovsk Oblast and Yekaterinburg are located near the center of Russia, at the crossroads between Europe and Asia and also the southern and northern parts of Russia. Winters are longer and colder than in western section of European Russia. Snowfalls can be heavy. Winter temperatures occasionally drop as low as - 40 degrees C (-40 degrees F) and the first snow usually falls in October. A heavy winter coat, long underwear and good boots are essential. Snow and ice make the sidewalks very slippery, so footwear with a good grip is important. Since the climate is very dry during the winter months, skin moisturizer plus lip balm are recommended. Be alert for mud on street surfaces when snow cover is melting (April-May). Patches of mud create slippery road conditions.

Yekaterinburg

Yekaterinburg (kilometer 1818 on the Trans-Siberian Railway) is the fourth largest city in Russia, with of 1.5 million and growth rate of about 12 percent, high for Russia. Located in the southern Ural mountains, it was founded by Peter the Great and named after his wife Catherine, it was used by the tsars as a summer retreat and is where tsar Nicholas II and his family were executed and President Boris Yeltsin lived most of his life and began his political career. The city is near the border between Europe and Asia.

Yekaterinburg (also spelled Ekaterinburg) is located on the eastern slope of the Ural Mountains in the headwaters of the Iset and Pyshma Rivers. The Iset runs through the city center. Three ponds — Verkh-Isetsky, Gorodskoy and Nizhne-Isetsky — were created on it. Yekaterinburg has traditionally been a city of mining and was once the center of the mining industry of the Urals and Siberia. Yekaterinburg remains a major center of the Russian armaments industry and is sometimes called the "Pittsburgh of Russia.". A few ornate, pastel mansions and wide boulevards are reminders of the tsarist era. The city is large enough that it has its own Metro system but is characterized mostly by blocky Soviet-era apartment buildings. The city has advanced under President Vladimir Putin and is now one of the fastest growing places in Russia, a country otherwise characterized by population declines

Yekaterinburg is technically an Asian city as it lies 32 kilometers east of the continental divide between Europe and Asia. The unofficial capital of the Urals, a key region in the Russian heartland, it is second only to Moscow in terms of industrial production and capital of Sverdlovsk oblast. Among the important industries are ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, machine building and metalworking, chemical and petrochemicals, construction materials and medical, light and food industries. On top of being home of numerous heavy industries and mining concerns, Yekaterinburg is also a major center for industrial research and development and power engineering as well as home to numerous institutes of higher education, technical training, and scientific research. In addition, Yekaterinburg is the largest railway junction in Russia: the Trans-Siberian Railway passes through it, the southern, northern, western and eastern routes merge in the city.

Accommodation: There are two good and affordable hotels — the 3-star Emerald and Parus hotels — located close to the city's most popular landmarks and main transport interchanges in the center of Yekaterinburg. Room prices start at RUB 1,800 per night.

History of Yekaterinburg

Yekaterinburg was founded in 1723 by Peter the Great and named after his wife Catherine I. It was used by the tsars as a summer retreat but was mainly developed as metalworking and manufacturing center to take advantage of the large deposits of iron and other minerals in the Ural mountains. It is best known to Americans as the place where the last Tsar and his family were murdered by the Bolsheviks in 1918 and near where American U-2 spy plane, piloted by Gary Powers, was shot down in 1960.

Peter the Great recognized the importance of the iron and copper-rich Urals region for Imperial Russia's industrial and military development. In November 1723, he ordered the construction of a fortress factory and an ironworks in the Iset River Valley, which required a dam for its operation. In its early years Yekaterinburg grew rich from gold and other minerals and later coal. The Yekaterinburg gold rush of 1745 created such a huge amount of wealth that one rich baron of that time hosted a wedding party that lasted a year. By the mid-18th century, metallurgical plants had sprung up across the Urals to cast cannons, swords, guns and other weapons to arm Russia’s expansionist ambitions. The Yekaterinburg mint produced most of Russia's coins. Explorations of the Trans-Baikal and Altai regions began here in the 18th century.

Iron, cast iron and copper were the main products. Even though Iron from the region went into the Eiffel Tower, the main plant in Yekaterinburg itself was shut down in 1808. The city still kept going through a mountain factory control system of the Urals. The first railway in the Urals was built here: in 1878, the Yekaterinburg-Perm railway branch connected the province's capital with the factories of the Middle Urals.

In the Soviet era the city was called Sverdlovsk (named after Yakov Sverdlov, the man who organized Nicholas II's execution). During the first five-year plans the city became industrial — old plants were reconstructed, new ones were built. The center of Yekaterinburg was formed to conform to the historical general plan of 1829 but was the layout was adjusted around plants and factories. In the Stalin era the city was a major gulag transhipment center. In World War II, many defense-related industries were moved here. It and the surrounding area were a center of the Soviet Union's military industrial complex. Soviet tanks, missiles and aircraft engines were made in the Urals. During the Cold War era, Yekaterinburg was a center of weapons-grade uranium enrichment and processing, warhead assembly and dismantlement. In 1979, 64 people died when anthrax leaked from a biological weapons facility. Yekaterinburg was a “Closed City” for 40 years during the Cold Soviet era and was not open to foreigners until 1991

In the early post-Soviet era, much like Pittsburgh in the 1970s, Yekaterinburg had a hard struggle d to cope with dramatic economic changes that have made its heavy industries uncompetitive on the world market. Huge defense plants struggled to survive and the city was notorious as an organized crime center in the 1990s, when its hometown boy Boris Yeltsin was President of Russia. By the 2000s, Yekaterinburg’s retail and service was taking off, the defense industry was reviving and it was attracting tech industries and investments related to the Urals’ natural resources. By the 2010s it was vying to host a world exhibition in 2020 (it lost, Dubai won) and it had McDonald’s, Subway, sushi restaurants, and Gucci, Chanel and Armani. There were Bentley and Ferrari dealerships but they closed down

Transportation in Yekaterinburg

Getting There: By Plane: Yekaterinburg is a three-hour flight from Moscow with prices starting at RUB 8,000, or a 3-hour flight from Saint Petersburg starting from RUB 9,422 (direct round-trip flight tickets for one adult passenger). There are also flights from Frankfurt, Istanbul, China and major cities in the former Soviet Union.

By Train: Yekaterinburg is a major stop on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Daily train service is available to Moscow and many other Russian cities.Yekaterinburg is a 32-hour train ride from Moscow (tickets RUB 8,380 and above) or a 36-hour train ride from Saint Petersburg (RUB 10,300 and above). The ticket prices are round trip for a berth in a sleeper compartment for one adult passenger). By Car: a car trip from Moscow to Yekateringburg is 1,787 kilometers long and takes about 18 hours. The road from Saint Petersburg is 2,294 kilometers and takes about 28 hours.

Regional Transport: The region's public transport includes buses and suburban electric trains. Regional trains provide transport to larger cities in the Ural region. Buses depart from Yekaterinburg’s two bus stations: the Southern Bus Station and the Northern Bus Station.

Regional Transport: According the to Association for Safe International Road Travel (ASIRT): “Public transportation is well developed. Overcrowding is common. Fares are low. Service is efficient. Buses are the main form of public transport. Tram network is extensive. Fares are reasonable; service is regular. Trams are heavily used by residents, overcrowding is common. Purchase ticket after boarding. Metro runs from city center to Uralmash, an industrial area south of the city. Metro ends near the main railway station. Fares are inexpensive.

“Traffic is congested in city center. Getting around by car can be difficult. Route taxis (minivans) provide the fastest transport. They generally run on specific routes, but do not have specific stops. Drivers stop where passengers request. Route taxis can be hailed. Travel by bus or trolleybuses may be slow in rush hour. Trams are less affected by traffic jams. Trolley buses (electric buses) cannot run when temperatures drop below freezing.”

Entertainment, Sports and Recreation in Yekaterinburg

The performing arts in Yekaterinburg are first rate. The city has an excellent symphony orchestra, opera and ballet theater, and many other performing arts venues. Tickets are inexpensive. The Yekaterinburg Opera and Ballet Theater is lavishly designed and richly decorated building in the city center of Yekaterinburg. The theater was established in 1912 and building was designed by architect Vladimir Semyonov and inspired by the Vienna Opera House and the Theater of Opera and Ballet in Odessa.

Vaynera Street is a pedestrian only shopping street in city center with restaurants, cafes and some bars. But otherwise Yekaterinburg's nightlife options are limited. There are a handful of expensive Western-style restaurants and bars, none of them that great. Nightclubs serve the city's nouveau riche clientele. Its casinos have closed down. Some of them had links with organized crime. New dance clubs have sprung up that are popular with Yekaterinburg's more affluent youth.

Yekaterinburg's most popular spectator sports are hockey, basketball, and soccer. There are stadiums and arenas that host all three that have fairly cheap tickets. There is an indoor water park and lots of parks and green spaces. The Urals have many lakes, forests and mountains are great for hiking, boating, berry and mushroom hunting, swimming and fishing. Winter sports include cross-country skiing and ice skating. Winter lasts about six months and there’s usually plenty of snow. The nearby Ural Mountains however are not very high and the downhill skiing opportunities are limited..

Sights in Yekaterinburg

Sights in Yekaterinburg include the Museum of City Architecture and Ural Industry, with an old water tower and mineral collection with emeralds. malachite, tourmaline, jasper and other precious stone; Geological Alley, a small park with labeled samples of minerals found in the Urals region; the Ural Geology Museum, which houses an extensive collection of stones, gold and gems from the Urals; a monument marking the border between Europe and Asia; a memorial for gulag victims; and a graveyard with outlandish memorials for slain mafia members.

The Military History Museum houses the remains of the U-2 spy plane shot down in 1960 and locally made tanks and rocket launchers. The fine arts museum contains paintings by some of Russia's 19th-century masters. Also worth a look are the History an Local Studies Museum; the Political History and Youth Museum; and the University and Arboretum. Old wooden houses can be seen around Zatoutstovsya ulitsa and ulitsa Belinskogo. Around the city are wooded parks, lakes and quarries used to harvest a variety of minerals. Weiner Street is the main street of Yekaterinburg. Along it are lovely sculptures and 19th century architecture. Take a walk around the unique Literary Quarter

Plotinka is a local meeting spot, where you will often find street musicians performing. Plotinka can be described as the center of the city's center. This is where Yekaterinburg holds its biggest events: festivals, seasonal fairs, regional holiday celebrations, carnivals and musical fountain shows. There are many museums and open-air exhibitions on Plotinka. Plotinka is named after an actual dam of the city pond located nearby (“plotinka” means “a small dam” in Russian). In November 1723, Peter the Great ordered the construction of an ironworks in the Iset River Valley, which required a dam for its operation. “Iset” can be translated from Finnish as “abundant with fish”. This name was given to the river by the Mansi — the Finno-Ugric people dwelling on the eastern slope of the Northern Urals.

Vysotsky and Iset are skyscrapers that are 188.3 meters and 209 meters high, respectively. Fifty-story-high Iset has been described by locals as the world’s northernmost skyscraper. Before the construction of Iset, Vysotsky was the tallest building of Yekaterinburg and Russia (excluding Moscow). A popular vote has decided to name the skyscraper after the famous Soviet songwriter, singer and actor Vladimir Vysotsky. and the building was opened on November 25, 2011. There is a lookout at the top of the building, and the Vysotsky museum on its second floor. The annual “Vysotsky climb” (1137 steps) is held there, with a prize of RUB 100,000. While Vysotsky serves as an office building, Iset, owned by the Ural Mining and Metallurgical Company, houses 225 premium residential apartments ranging from 80 to 490 square meters in size.

Boris Yeltsin Presidential Center

The Boris Yeltsin Presidential Center (in the city center: ul. Yeltsina, 3) is a non-governmental organization named after the first president of the Russian Federation. The Museum of the First President of Russia as well as his archives are located in the Center. There is also a library, educational and children's centers, and exposition halls. Yeltsin lived most of his life and began his political career in Yekaterinburg. He was born in Butka about 200 kilometers east of Yekaterinburg.

The core of the Center is the Museum. Modern multimedia technologies help animate the documents, photos from the archives, and artifacts. The Yeltsin Museum holds collections of: propaganda posters, leaflets, and photos of the first years of the Soviet regime; portraits and portrait sculptures of members of Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of various years; U.S.S.R. government bonds and other items of the Soviet era; a copy of “One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich” by Alexander Solzhenitsyn, published in the “Novy Mir” magazine (#11, 1962); perestroika-era editions of books by Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Vasily Grossman, and other authors; theater, concert, and cinema posters, programs, and tickets — in short, all of the artifacts of the perestroika era.

The Yeltsin Center opened in 2012. Inside you will also find an art gallery, a bookstore, a gift shop, a food court, concert stages and a theater. There are regular screenings of unique films that you will not find anywhere else. Also operating inside the center, is a scientific exploritorium for children. The center was designed by Boris Bernaskoni. Almost from the its very opening, the Yeltsin Center has been accused by members of different political entities of various ideological crimes. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00am to 9:00pm.

Where Nicholas II was Executed

On July, 17, 1918, during this reign of terror of the Russian Civil War, former-tsar Nicholas II, his wife, five children (the 13-year-old Alexis, 22-year-old Olga, 19-year-old Maria and 17-year-old Anastasia)the family physician, the cook, maid, and valet were shot to death by a Red Army firing squad in the cellar of the house they were staying at in Yekaterinburg.

Ipatiev House (near Church on the Blood, Ulitsa Libknekhta) was a merchant's house where Nicholas II and his family were executed. The house was demolished in 1977, on the orders of an up and coming communist politician named Boris Yeltsin. Yeltsin later said that the destruction of the house was an "act of barbarism" and he had no choice because he had been ordered to do it by the Politburo,

The site is marked with s cross with the photos of the family members and cross bearing their names. A small wooden church was built at the site. It contains paintings of the family. For a while there were seven traditional wooden churches. Mass is given ay noon everyday in an open-air museum. The Church on the Blood — constructed to honor Nicholas II and his family — was built on the part of the site in 1991 and is now a major place of pilgrimage.

Nicholas and his family where killed during the Russian civil war. It is thought the Bolsheviks figured that Nicholas and his family gave the Whites figureheads to rally around and they were better of dead. Even though the death orders were signed Yakov Sverdlov, the assassination was personally ordered by Lenin, who wanted to get them out of sight and out of mind. Trotsky suggested a trial. Lenin nixed the idea, deciding something had to be done about the Romanovs before White troops approached Yekaterinburg. Trotsky later wrote: "The decision was not only expedient but necessary. The severity of he punishment showed everyone that we would continue to fight on mercilessly, stopping at nothing."

Ian Frazier wrote in The New Yorker: “Having read a lot about the end of Tsar Nicholas II and his family and servants, I wanted to see the place in Yekaterinburg where that event occurred. The gloomy quality of this quest depressed Sergei’s spirits, but he drove all over Yekaterinburg searching for the site nonetheless. Whenever he stopped and asked a pedestrian how to get to the house where Nicholas II was murdered, the reaction was a wince. Several people simply walked away. But eventually, after a lot of asking, Sergei found the location. It was on a low ridge near the edge of town, above railroad tracks and the Iset River. The house, known as the Ipatiev House, was no longer standing, and the basement where the actual killings happened had been filled in. I found the blankness of the place sinister and dizzying. It reminded me of an erasure done so determinedly that it had worn a hole through the page. [Source: Ian Frazier, The New Yorker, August 3, 2009, Frazier is author of “Travels in Siberia” (2010)]

“The street next to the site is called Karl Liebknecht Street. A building near where the house used to be had a large green advertisement that said, in English, “LG—Digitally Yours.” On an adjoining lot, a small chapel kept the memory of the Tsar and his family; beneath a pedestal holding an Orthodox cross, peonies and pansies grew. The inscription on the pedestal read, “We go down on our knees, Russia, at the foot of the tsarist cross.”

Execution of Nicholas II

According to Robert Massie K. Massie, author of Nicholas and Alexandra, Nicholas II and his family were awakened from their bedrooms around midnight and taken to the basement. They were told they were to going to take some photographs of them and were told to stand behind a row of chairs.

Suddenly, a group of 11 Russians and Latvians, each with a revolver, burst into the room with orders to kill a specific person. Yakob Yurovsky, a member of the Soviet executive committee, reportedly shouted "your relatives are continuing to attack the Soviet Union.” After firing, bullets bouncing off gemstones hidden in the corsets of Alexandra and her daughters ricocheted around the room like "a shower of hail," the soldiers said. Those that were still breathing were killed with point black shots to the head.

The three sisters and the maid survived the first round thanks to their gems. They were pressed up against a wall and killed with a second round of bullets. The maid was the only one that survived. She was pursued by the executioners who stabbed her more than 30 times with their bayonets. The still writhing body of Alexis was made still by a kick to the head and two bullets in the ear delivered by Yurovsky himself.

Yurovsky wrote: "When the party entered I told the Romanovs that in view of the fact their relatives continued their offensive against Soviet Russia, the Executive Committee of the Urals Soviet had decided to shoot them. Nicholas turned his back to the detachment and faced his family. Then, as if collecting himself, he turned around, asking, 'What? What?'"

"[I] ordered the detachment to prepare. Its members had been previously instructed whom to shoot and to am directly at the heart to avoid much blood and to end more quickly. Nicholas said no more. he turned again to his family. The others shouted some incoherent exclamations. All this lasted a few seconds. Then commenced the shooting, which went on for two or three minutes. [I] killed Nicholas on the spot."

Nicholas II’s Initial Burial Site in Yekaterinburg

Ganina Yama Monastery (near the village of Koptyaki, 15 kilometers northwest of Yekaterinburg) stands near the three-meter-deep pit where some the remains of Nicholas II and his family were initially buried. The second burial site — where most of the remains were — is in a field known as Porosyonkov (56.9113628°N 60.4954326°E), seven kilometers from Ganina Yama.

On visiting Ganina Yama Monastery, one person posted in Trip Advisor: “We visited this set of churches in a pretty park with Konstantin from Ekaterinburg Guide Centre. He really brought it to life with his extensive knowledge of the history of the events surrounding their terrible end. The story is so moving so unless you speak Russian, it is best to come here with a guide or else you will have no idea of what is what.”

In 1991, the acid-burned remains of Nicholas II and his family were exhumed from a shallow roadside mass grave in a swampy area 12 miles northwest of Yekaterinburg. The remains had been found in 1979 by geologist and amateur archeologist Alexander Avdonin, who kept the location secret out of fear that they would be destroyed by Soviet authorities. The location was disclosed to a magazine by one his fellow discovers.

The original plan was to throw the Romanovs down a mine shaft and disposes of their remains with acid. They were thrown in a mine with some grenades but the mine didn't collapse. They were then carried by horse cart. The vats of acid fell off and broke. When the carriage carrying the bodies broke down it was decided the bury the bodies then and there. The remaining acid was poured on the bones, but most of it was soaked up the ground and the bones largely survived.

After this their pulses were then checked, their faces were crushed to make them unrecognizable and the bodies were wrapped in bed sheets loaded onto a truck. The "whole procedure," Yurovsky said took 20 minutes. One soldiers later bragged than he could "die in peace because he had squeezed the Empress's -------."

The bodies were taken to a forest and stripped, burned with acid and gasoline, and thrown into abandoned mine shafts and buried under railroad ties near a country road near the village of Koptyaki. "The bodies were put in the hole," Yurovsky wrote, "and the faces and all the bodies, generally doused with sulfuric acid, both so they couldn't be recognized and prevent a stink from them rotting...We scattered it with branches and lime, put boards on top and drove over it several times—no traces of the hole remained.

Shortly afterwards, the government in Moscow announced that Nicholas II had been shot because of "a counterrevolutionary conspiracy." There was no immediate word on the other members of the family which gave rise to rumors that other members of the family had escaped. Yekaterinburg was renamed Sverdlov in honor of the man who signed the death orders.

For seven years the remains of Nicholas II, Alexandra, three of their daughters and four servants were stored in polyethylene bags on shelves in the old criminal morgue in Yekaterunburg. On July 17, 1998, Nicholas II and his family and servants who were murdered with him were buried Peter and Paul Fortress in St. Petersburg along with the other Romanov tsars, who have been buried there starting with Peter the Great. Nicholas II had a side chapel built for himself at the fortress in 1913 but was buried in a new crypt.

Ural Mountains

Ural Mountains are the traditional dividing line between Europe and Asia and have been a crossroads of Russian history. Stretching from Kazakhstan to the fringes of the Arctic Kara Sea, the Urals lie almost exactly along the 60 degree meridian of longitude and extend for about 2,000 kilometers (1,300 miles) from north to south and varies in width from about 50 kilometers (30 miles) in the north and 160 kilometers (100 miles) the south. At kilometers 1777 on the Trans-Siberian Railway there is white obelisk with "Europe" carved in Russian on one side and "Asia" carved on the other.

The eastern side of the Urals contains a lot of granite and igneous rock. The western side is primarily sandstone and limestones. A number of precious stones can be found in the southern part of the Urals, including emeralds. malachite, tourmaline, jasper and aquamarines. The highest peaks are in the north. Mount Narodnaya is the highest of all but is only 1884 meters (6,184 feet) high. The northern Urals are covered in thick forests and home to relatively few people.

Like the Appalachian Mountains in the eastern United States, the Urals are very old mountains — with rocks and sediments that are hundreds of millions years old — that were one much taller than they are now and have been steadily eroded down over millions of years by weather and other natural processes to their current size. According to Encyclopedia Britannica: “The rock composition helps shape the topography: the high ranges and low, broad-topped ridges consist of quartzites, schists, and gabbro, all weather-resistant. Buttes are frequent, and there are north–south troughs of limestone, nearly all containing river valleys. Karst topography is highly developed on the western slopes of the Urals, with many caves, basins, and underground streams. The eastern slopes, on the other hand, have fewer karst formations; instead, rocky outliers rise above the flattened surfaces. Broad foothills, reduced to peneplain, adjoin the Central and Southern Urals on the east.

“The Urals date from the structural upheavals of the Hercynian orogeny (about 250 million years ago). About 280 million years ago there arose a high mountainous region, which was eroded to a peneplain. Alpine folding resulted in new mountains, the most marked upheaval being that of the Nether-Polar Urals...The western slope of the Urals is composed of middle Paleozoic sedimentary rocks (sandstones and limestones) that are about 350 million years old. In many places it descends in terraces to the Cis-Ural depression (west of the Urals), to which much of the eroded matter was carried during the late Paleozoic (about 300 million years ago). Found there are widespread karst (a starkly eroded limestone region) and gypsum, with large caverns and subterranean streams. On the eastern slope, volcanic layers alternate with sedimentary strata, all dating from middle Paleozoic times.”

Southern Urals

The southern Urals are characterized by grassy slopes and fertile valleys. The middle Urals are a rolling platform that barely rises above 300 meters (1,000 feet). This region is rich in minerals and has been heavily industrialized. This is where you can find Yekaterinburg (formally Sverdlovsk), the largest city in the Urals.

Most of the Southern Urals are is covered with forests, with 50 percent of that pine-woods, 44 percent birch woods, and the rest are deciduous aspen and alder forests. In the north, typical taiga forests are the norm. There are patches of herbal-poaceous steppes, northem sphagnous marshes and bushy steppes, light birch forests and shady riparian forests, tall-grass mountainous meadows, lowland ling marshes and stony placers with lichen stains. In some places there are no large areas of homogeneous forests, rather they are forests with numerous glades and meadows of different size.

In the Ilmensky Mountains Reserve in the Southern Urals, scientists counted 927 vascular plants (50 relicts, 23 endemic species), about 140 moss species, 483 algae species and 566 mushroom species. Among the species included into the Red Book of Russia are feather grass, downy-leaved feather grass, Zalessky feather grass, moccasin flower, ladies'-slipper, neottianthe cucullata, Baltic orchis, fen orchis, helmeted orchis, dark-winged orchis, Gelma sandwart, Krasheninnikov sandwart, Clare astragalus.

The fauna of the vertebrate animals in the Reserve includes 19 fish, 5 amphibian and 5 reptile. Among the 48 mammal species are elks, roe deer, boars, foxes, wolves, lynxes, badgers, common weasels, least weasels, forest ferrets, Siberian striped weasel, common marten, American mink. Squirrels, beavers, muskrats, hares, dibblers, moles, hedgehogs, voles are quite common, as well as chiropterans: pond bat, water bat, Brandt's bat, whiskered bat, northern bat, long-eared bat, parti-coloured bat, Nathusius' pipistrelle. The 174 bird bird species include white-tailed eagles, honey hawks, boreal owls, gnome owls, hawk owls, tawny owls, common scoters, cuckoos, wookcocks, common grouses, wood grouses, hazel grouses, common partridges, shrikes, goldenmountain thrushes, black- throated loons and others.

Activities and Places in the Ural Mountains

The Urals possess beautiful natural scenery that can be accessed from Yekaterinburg with a rent-a-car, hired taxi and tour. Travel agencies arrange rafting, kayaking and hiking trips. Hikes are available in the taiga forest and the Urals. Trips often include walks through the taiga to small lakes and hikes into the mountains and excursions to collect mushrooms and berries and climb in underground caves. Mellow rafting is offered in a relatively calm six kilometer section of the River Serga. In the winter visitor can enjoy cross-mountains skiing, downhill skiing, ice fishing, dog sledding, snow-shoeing and winter hiking through the forest to a cave covered with ice crystals.

Lake Shartash (10 kilometers from Yekaterinburg) is where the first Ural gold was found, setting in motion the Yekaterinburg gold rush of 1745, which created so much wealth one rich baron of that time hosted a wedding party that lasted a year. The area around Shartash Lake is a favorite picnic and barbecue spot of the locals. Getting There: by bus route No. 50, 054 or 54, with a transfer to suburban commuter bus route No. 112, 120 or 121 (the whole trip takes about an hour), or by car (10 kilometers drive from the city center, 40 minutes).

Revun Rapids (90 kilometers road from Yekaterinburg near Beklenishcheva village) is a popular white water rafting places On the nearby cliffs you can see the remains of a mysterious petroglyph from the Paleolithic period. Along the steep banks, you may notice the dark entrance of Smolinskaya Cave. There are legends of a sorceress who lived in there. The rocks at the riverside are suited for competitive rock climbers and beginners. Climbing hooks and rings are hammered into rocks. The most fun rafting is generally in May and June.

Olenii Ruchii National Park (100 kilometers west of Yekaterinburg) is the most popular nature park in Sverdlovsk Oblast and popular weekend getaway for Yekaterinburg residents. Visitors are attracted by the beautiful forests, the crystal clear Serga River and picturesque rocks caves. There are some easy hiking routes: the six-kilometer Lesser Ring and the 15-kilometer Greater Ring. Another route extends for 18 km and passes by the Mitkinsky Mine, which operated in the 18th-19th centuries. It's a kind of an open-air museum — you can still view mining an enrichment equipment here. There is also a genuine beaver dam nearby.

Among the other attractions at Olenii Ruchii are Druzhba (Friendship) Cave, with passages that extend for about 500 meters; Dyrovaty Kamen (Holed Stone), created over time by water of Serga River eroding rock; and Utoplennik (Drowned Man), where you can see “The Angel of Sole Hope”., created by the Swedish artist Lehna Edwall, who has placed seven angels figures in different parts of the world to “embrace the planet, protecting it from fear, despair, and disasters.”

Sverdlovsk Philharmonic Concert Hall

Zaha Hadid Architects have been selected by the jury of the international design competition to build the new Sverdlovsk Philharmonic Concert Hall in Yekaterinburg, capital of Sverdlovsk oblast region in Russia.

A cultural hub across Eurasia, Yekaterinburg has built a rich musical tradition; moving the city’s acclaimed Ural Philharmonic Orchestra, from the existing 1936 building to its new home, will provide an inspirational venue and also create a new public plaza.

Echoing the physical aspects of sound waves, the design of the new Philharmonic Concert Hall is based on the properties of musical sound resonance creating wave vibrations in a continuous smooth surface. The design re-interprets these physical acoustic properties to define spaces for the auditoria that are suspended within the canopy, appearing to float above the new civic plaza that is both the lobby of the Philharmonic Concert Hall and an enclosed urban square.

Providing a 1,600-seat Concert Hall and a 400-seat Chamber Music Hall of the highest acoustic standards, these new auditoria are nestled within the surface deformations of the suspended canopy; liberating the lobbies from obstructions to open this space as a vibrant new gathering place for the local community.

The new building will inhabit the void between the old Civic Assembly Building and Weiner Gardens; not competing but complementing the surrounding heritage built ensemble that will include the preservation and renovation of the current concert hall. The new building seamlessly merges with the park’s landscape; opening its transparent glass facade to offer views of the renovated Weiner Gardens and a new amphitheatre for outdoor performances in the summer.

Enhancing its connections with the surrounding urban fabric of the city, the new building’s large glazed facades blur the boundary between interior and exterior, inviting visitors to experience a new public civic space that continues to its rooftop terrace overlooking the city’s Church of All Saints.

A total of 47 international teams submitted proposals to the design competition that was organised by the Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure Development of the Sverdlovsk Region with the assistance of the charitable foundation for support of the Ural Philharmonic Orchestra.
