Round recap: Tiger Woods cards 70 Friday at Hero World Challenge

Tiger Woods making a comeback on the Bahamian shores should ring a bell. He’s done it before.

The Woods-hosted Hero World Challenge has served as the 82-time PGA TOUR winner’s defacto testing grounds as he’s recovered from myriad injuries. And it will do so again this week.

Woods played his first PGA TOUR round Thursday since withdrawing during the third round of the Masters with plantar fasciitis. He posted a 3-over 75 and sits 18th on the leaderboard, eight shots behind first-round co-leaders Brian Harman and Tony Finau. Woods spent the last seven months outside the limelight, recovering from his right ankle fusion surgery in April.

Woods cut his 18-hole pro-am short on Wednesday, opting to play just the front nine at Albany Golf Club and conserve his energy. He has played in just five tournaments since his 2021 car accident and has completed a full 72 holes just twice.

“I'm excited to compete and play, and I'm just as curious as all of you are to see what happens because I haven't done it in a while,” Woods said earlier in the week.

Following his round Thursday, Woods noted: “Physically I knew I was going to be OK. Mentally, I was really rusty and made a lot of errors in the mind that normally I don't make.”

Woods will tee off at 11:02 a.m. ET on Friday with Rickie Fowler, who carded a 2-over 74 on Thursday.

Round recap: See how Tiger Woods' first round unfolded at Hero World Challenge

Read on for live updates from Tiger's second round at the Hero World Challenge.

Hello, all, and welcome to Round 2 of the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas. Just like yesterday, Tiger Woods will tee it up with a good friend, going from Justin Thomas to, now, Rickie Fowler. Woods shot 75 in the first round and pronounced himself mentally rusty, which was plain to see, especially as the day wore on. Fatigue will be something he's got to overcome in his first competitive action since he WD'd from the Masters in April. He'll also turn 48 on Dec. 30. We'll see whether he can remain mentally sharper throughout the round today.

Hole 18 (par 4, 456 yards): Tiger's tee shot on the last runs just through the fairway into the rough. He comes up short with his approach, but is able to convert a tough up-and-down for par.

Not that he's trying to teach us anything, but Tiger has reminded what a fine line it is at the very top of professional golf.

He has looked, at times, like his vintage self, but as Paul McGinley just said on Golf Channel, "He's making mistakes that are uncharacteristic." And it doesn't take a very big mistake at that level to find yourself falling well behind.

Tiger's par at 18 gives him a 2-under 70, all in all a better effort than Round 1, but still with much to work on. He's 1 over for the tournament, and will go into the weekend well off the lead. As long as he keeps moving well, he'll have a chance to figure it out.

2-under 70 on Friday 1-over for the tournament 10/13 fairways hit; 14/18 greens in regulation

Hole 17 (par 3, 168 yards): All in all, Woods has been noticeably sharper from tee to green in Round 2, and after finding the green at the par-3 17th rolls in a long, left-to-right birdie putt with some pace on it.

Tiger Woods uses the entire cup on 29-foot birdie putt at Hero World Challenge

That makes him 2 under on the day, 1 over for the tournament. That was his first birdie since the 7th hole, about two and a half hours ago, and it will leave a slightly better taste on what has been another bittersweet back nine.

You'd have to say that Woods has given away about three shots on the back nine, one with a three-putt bogey from inside 20 feet; one with a missed 5-footer; and one by putting it into a greenside bunker. If there's one obvious sign of his long layoff, it's these mental lapses.

2-under on Friday through 17 1-over for the tournament 10/12 fairways hit; 14/17 greens in regulation

Hole 16 (par 4, 472 yards): Tiger finds the fairway on 16 but misses the green right and short from about 220, and can't get up and down from a terrible lie.

That's his second straight bogey and third in the last four holes. He's now 1 under on the round, 2 over for the tournament, and is in danger of repeating his late fade from Thursday. Without playing competitively, it's hard to remain sharp for the full four-plus hours of a round, and this presents perhaps his biggest issue and his biggest challenge going forward.

He said he'll play once a month in '24, best case, but without the competitive reps, it's very, very hard to be mentally sharp in that third and fourth hour of a round.

1-under on Friday through 16 2-over for the tournament 10/12 fairways hit; 13/16 greens in regulation

Hole 15 (par 5, 543 yards): Woods splits the fairway at the par-5 15th hole, which is way better than he did here yesterday, when he drove it into a bush and eventually made double.

Tiger's tee shot at the par-5 15th travels an eye-popping 370 yards and finds the fairway, so that's not the problem. The problem, as he alluded to after the first round, is mental fatigue leading to a lack of focus and commitment.

He short-sided himself with his second from 182, the ball finding the left greenside bunker; hit a poor bunker shot; putted it BACK into the bunker; and got up and down for bogey.

2-under on Friday through 15 1-over for the tournament 9/11 fairways hit; 13/15 greens in regulation

Hole 14 (par 4, 301 yards): Woods with another solid tee shot at the driveable par-4 14th and that leaves him in a low spot and needing to chip up a steep bank onto the green.

Decent second shot comes up about 5 feet short, and he pulls the birdie try and settles for another par. Another missed opportunity, and now he comes to 15, where he hit his worst tee shot of the day in Round 1.

Tom Lehman once told me the best advice on Ryder Cup nerves was to "get committed and swing." This is where Tiger said he had problems Thursday. So far he's been better from tee to green today, but has suddenly looked a bit wobbly with the putter. Essentially gave away one, arguably two shots the last two holes on the greens.

3-under on Friday through 14 Even for the tournament 8/10 fairways hit; 12/14 greens in regulation

Hole 13 (par 4, 502 yards): After blasting a 359-yard tee shot at the 13th, Tiger hits a so-so approach from 152 to about 20 feet for birdie. He started this round red-hot, 4 under through seven holes, but has cooled a bit with five-straight pars, including two on par-5s.

Three-putt bogey on 13 drops Tiger to 3 under for the day and even par for the tournament, and he's about to come to the part of the course that gave him so much trouble Thursday. This is what he was talking about yesterday with mental lapses. I've got to believe he was trying to force something with that birdie putt, which was hit too hard. Hasn't made a birdie in about 90 minutes.

3-under on Friday through 13 Even for the tournament 7/9 fairways hit; 11/13 greens in regulation

Hole 12 (par 3, 204 yards): A solid 4-iron from Woods at the par-3 12th finds the green, albeit 40 feet short of the hole.

To watch Woods in his prime, up close, was to be dazzled by the speed (and the sound) with which he moved through the ball, especially with the long irons. He's still got that. He's also still got the course management. What will take longest to recover is the ability to finish his rounds, and, after that, the ability to string four rounds together.

A casual two-putt from distance keeps the round going.

4-under on Friday through 12 1-under for the tournament 6/8 fairways hit; 10/12 greens in regulation

Hole 11 (par 5, 566 yards): Another fairway hit for Tiger at the par-5 11th hole, and now, more than two hours into the round, we have to remember the mental stamina part of the equation. Can he bring this very good round to the house or will a slight lapse in focus cost him as it did Thursday?

Uncharacteristic mistake by Tiger at the par-5 11th as he misses the green from just 95 yards in the middle of the fairway. Instead of a birdie look, he's left himself with an up-and-down challenge and bump-and-runs it to 6 feet, 2 inches. Although he pours in the par putt, it's not quite what he had in mind and a far cry from the way he played the 5s in his prime. That will have to come later.

4-under on Friday through 11 1-under for the tournament 6/8 fairways hit; 9/11 greens in regulation

Hole 10 (par 4, 635 yards): Steve Sands on the broadcast sums up Woods at nearly 48: "He's managing the game that he can play with now; this is not 15 years ago." And you'd have to say he's doing a fine job of it.

Despite tee shot coming to rest in an awkward spot next to the fairway bunker on 10, Woods takes very little time and hits a little three-quarter shot onto the green. Should be able to get out of there with a par and get back on offense.

Woods’ second shot at the 10th is as good an example as any that he remains confident in that fused ankle. In the few precarious positions he has found himself in over the first two days, he’s hardly taken any time to set his feet and play. There’s a lack of mobility, yes. But there’s no passiveness.

Woods routine two-putt par on 10.

What's striking about Tiger is not just his four birdies on the front side but the total absence of pain and anguish on his face from the plantar fasciitis that knocked him out of the Masters. Somewhere, a subtalar fusion surgeon is smiling.

4-under on Friday through 10 1-under for the tournament 5/7 fairways hit; 8/10 greens in regulation

Hole 9 (par 5, 635 yards): Tiger finds the fairway again at the par-5 ninth and is suddenly four off the lead, 4 under on the day. He's never won the Hero since it moved to Albany in '15, but what's really interesting is all the places we've got coming up in early '24 where he has won. The upcoming season is getting spicier with every Woods birdie, and every pain-free step.

Woods' speed is still better than TOUR average, and he was a good 10 yards past Fowler off the tee at the ninth. Tiger's second, a fairway wood from 298, curves in there from left to right and bounds just over the green. He'll need to get up and down again for his fifth birdie of the day but hits a mediocre chip and can't convert from 13 feet.

Par and 32 on the front, which is still pretty darn good for a guy who hasn't played a competitive round since April.

4-under on Friday through 9 1-under for the tournament 5/6 fairways hit; 7/9 greens in regulation

Hole 8 (par 3, 214 yards): Tiger's tee shot on the long par-3 comes up short, leaving himself short sided with a tricky path to saving par.

Tiger hit that exact bump and run into the hole short of the par-3 eighth green during his Wednesday pro-am. This one comes up a bit short and leaves him a tester for par. First real stress of the day… and he buries it. He’s in a zone.

There are three par 5s on the front nine at Albany, and if Tiger can find a way to birdie the third one, at No. 9, he will have shot 31 on the front nine. Rust? What rust?

4-under on Friday through 8 1-under for the tournament 4/5 fairways hit; 6/8 greens in regulation

Hole 7 (par 4, 344 yards): Woods tee shot comes up just short of the green at the reachable par-4 seventh hole, but a chip to 30 inches or so and a tap-in birdie has him to 4 under on the day, 1 under overall.

Tiger Woods cards four birdies in first seven holes at Hero

He said he wasn't mentally sharp Thursday and wanted to work on that. Job done, apparently.

4-under on Friday through 7 1-under for the tournament 4/5 fairways hit; 6/7 greens in regulation

Hole 6 (par 5, 579 yards): Woods gets up and down from the greenside bunker to birdie the par-5 sixth hole and is now 3 under on the day. It's a good sign for many reasons, among them the fact that he's historically feasted on the 5s, with roughly a 4.5 scoring average. His 4.37 average on the par 5s in his best season, 2000, was .13 better than second best Vijay Singh.

3-under on Friday through 6 Even for the tournament 4/4 fairways hit; 5/6 greens in regulation

Hole 5 (par 3, 162 yards): Looks like a routine par at the par-3 fifth. Green. Two putts. Ho hum.

An update on Woods’ gait is really not an update at all. It looks good! A continuation of what we saw yesterday. He looks comfortable and unbothered through 23 holes of competition play

2-under on Friday through 5 1-over for the tournament 3/3 fairways hit; 4/5 greens in regulation

Hole 4 (par 4, 481 yards): Tiger’s hands are alive and well.

His approach shot missed just short of the green on the 481-yard par-4 fourth, but a delicate bump and run through the grainy Bermuda grass trickled to within four feet. He saved par. These are the up and downs that Tiger has made looked routine for so long. But I promise you, that was not routine. Woods looking sharp through four holes.

2-under on Friday through 4 1-over for the tournament 3/3 fairways hit; 3/4 greens in regulation

Hole 3 (par 5, 546 yards): Among the bugaboos in Woods’ first round was his par-5 scoring. He played the five par 5s in 1-over, a fact that quite annoyed him.

He won’t feel any better after his first par-5 today. In ideal position after his tee shot with just 220 yards left to the third green, Woods dumped his approach in the right greenside bunker. He left himself 10 feet for birdie, but missed on the low-side.

Still, 2-under through three holes is encouraging. It’s one shot better than he played the opening stretch on Thursday.

Fowler eagled the third, Woods par, which means they are 4 under through three, best ball. Some good mojo in this group. In Fowler, Woods is playing with his second straight fellow PLAYERS champion (Justin Thomas yesterday) of the five in the 20-man field. The others include defending PLAYERS champ Scottie Scheffler, and Jason Day.

Tiger isn't the only one making a comeback today. After his disastrous 81, Will Zalatoris has eagled the third hole and is 3 under through five holes.

2-under on Friday through 3 1-over for the tournament 2/2 fairways hit; 3/3 greens in regulation

Hole 2 (par 3, 179 yards): Woods missed his tee shot right of the 178-yard par-3 second hole on Thursday and left himself a tough up and down from the bunker.

He remedied that today. Woods carved in what might be his best iron shot of the week to within 5 feet of a tucked left pin and drained the putt.

It’s a great start to the day and a great sign that Woods’ body recovered as he liked after his first day of competition. He admitted after is first round that he was sore “everywhere.” Whatever afflictions he is feeling thus far aren’t yet visible in his performance.

2-under on Friday through 2 1-over for the tournament 1/1 fairways hit; 2/2 greens in regulation

Hole 1 (par 4, 426 yards): Just like he did in Round 1, Woods splits the first fairway with his drive. Lots of analysis of his return to competitive action. He wore down mentally as the day went on, he didn't hit enough fairways and greens, etc. I was more interested in his body language when it was over. Woods was all smiles, which told me he got what he wanted out of the round. Namely, he was not in extreme pain. As long as he can move freely, and as long as he feels well enough to keep going, he has to feel confident he'll figure it out as he goes.

It’s considerably more humid out here today. Woods has reached for his towel multiple times already. It should keep the back loose, but stamina will remain a question as it’s only forecasted to get warmer throughout the day.

Birdie at the first for Tiger. Will be interesting to watch as he plays his way back into some semblance of form.

Tiger Woods opens Round 2 with birdie at Hero World Challenge

The golf knowledge is off the charts, and if his body allows, he's going to figure out a way. This week I wrote about Kirk Gibson's famous home run off Dennis Eckersley at the 1988 World Series, when Gibson could barely walk. What I did not mention is that Gibson knew what was coming; the scouting report said Eckersley would throw a backdoor slider on a 3-2 count, which is what happened. You get the feeling Tiger is like Gibson in '88, operating with just a little bit more knowledge than the competition.

1-under on Friday through 1 2-over for the tournament 1/1 fairways hit; 1/1 greens in regulation

10:38 a.m.: Same routine for Woods to start day two here. He arrived at the putting green about an hour before his tee time and hit putts for about 10 minutes before heading to the short game area.

It was a part of his game that flashed brilliance during his opening round. He holed three birdie putts over 20 feet, including a 48-footer on No. 11. It was also an area that showed some rust. He hit a poor bunker shot on No. 7 that led to a disappointing par on the drivable par-4. He also three-putted for bogey on the par-3 17th for his third straight hole of bogey or worse as he closed his round. Will those brief moments of rust stick around today? Or will he show a refined short game during his second loop around Albany Golf Club?

Shaquille O'Neal Net Worth: How Big Shaq Dunked on the Business World

The queen of the beam: simone biles' net worth, snoop dogg's net worth is also really high, quick links, it's all in the name, and it's all in tiger’s game, spending big on luxury, the yacht’s maintenance cost.

Tiger Woods has been living life in his very own 'heaven-on-earth' yacht, named Privacy, during the U.S open. Docked near the Shinnecock Hills in New York, Woods chose the more convenient yet costly approach to steer clear of the horrendous traffic golfers encounter on their way to the game. Privacy has affluently given in Five staterooms for guests, four rooms for the crew, a gym, an eight-person hot tub, kayaks, scooters, and whatnot. This absurdly large and exotically expensive watercraft has been one of Tiger’s most significant investments . Besides traveling to the Bahamas for the Hero World Challenge, Tiger has taken this lump-some beauty in many different locations.

The Privacy yacht of Tiger Woods has a palatial prominence in the large luxury club of big boats. One must be aware of Privacy’s multifaceted facilities and amenities it tags along with for Woods and his ventures.

Privacy, as what Tiger titled the mega 55 million dollar custom-built watercraft he owns, was kept that name so he could keep his personal life relatively private. Emerging a website for the same, Tiger Woods and his alleged affairs and life have always been a private game for the world.

This 100-footer has been crafted and modeled after James Bond’s submarines and was made very clear about his prime-time derived inspiration. Woods’ Privacy yacht is no less than luxury on the water for a capacity of more than one person’s needs with its crew pack of nine members, a three-person-elevator, and an eight-person jacuzzi fitting. The yacht inhibits a travel speed of approximately 17 knots, making the watercraft an excellent choice of Woods, eschewing away the road traffic.

This commodious 47-meter creation also covers a large bar, a station to fill scuba tanks, and an inflatable decompression chamber, making it plush and posh for the up-market. The cherry woodwork has beautifully encompassed the interiors of this big boat with a VIP stateroom aft and two queen-size cabins amidship and a twin cabin, making ample room for Woods and his frequent tour buddies, as rightly mentioned in USA today .

The workout room has been converted into the fitness space from the lush cabin it originally was crafted as. Tiger’s workout necessitates a treadmill, exercise bike, and free weights being ornately equipped in the arena. The transparent stairs and a cherry handrail add the oomph to the yacht from an aesthetic point of view.

Tiger’s open floor plan entails a main living area with only a single divider between the saloon and the dining room. The functionalities cost up to 2 million dollars a year to operate smoothly. Tiger, the highest-paid athlete's yacht, is a trifold fiberglass motor yacht with a numbing 9-meter beam up in the roar. The motor force on the yacht derives from a pair of 1,800 hp MTU/Detroit Diesel motors, while two 99 kilowatt Northern Lights generators providing electrical power are the substantial swanking components.

Tiger Woods’ yacht can carry three SeaDoos, two ocean kayaks, and two Vespa scooters, and that’s not all it. This massive boat can hold up to a whopping 12,000 gallons of gas. Powered by twin 1800-horsepower, the type of fuel aggravates the support the best of this booming boat craft, as stated in the Yacht Harbour .

The golf player surely doesn’t face costing issues for his water mansion. Privacy costs around 2,40,000 dollars per week which count up to 1.6 million dollars gushing in water, technically per year. Wood’s numbers plummet quite a bit if the boat's utility has extended periods.

Tiger’s net worth pulls all strings to maintain such a luxury lifestyle with the Privacy boat, as he’s made more than 100 million dollars single-handedly during his career. Residing his heart near the boundless beauty, Antigua - right on a beach with his own beautiful home, thus privacy is safe, secured, and un-stowed when he’s not using it.

The 14-time major champion in golf with a net worth of approximately $700 million has a stunner crew for this super-boat. The ship’s operating budget floats around for the yacht maintenance and crew member salaries - two-thirds of operating expenses, excluding the benefits. The shining nine members help the boat afloat and manage the supplies, food, and other miscellaneous costs such as paying off fines imparted on by authorities - which also takes away one-third of the cost as revealed in Wheels inquirer .

Being an ultimate lump of luxury on the water, Privacy has not failed to shock and surprise us with the available amenities and provisions for Tiger and his ventures.

Tiger Woods will hold a press conference on Tuesday afternoon ahead of this week's Hero World Challenge at Albany.

The popular TWLegion account, which is typically the first to break the latest Woods headlines in the game and now has more than 35,000 followers, was the first to announce the news on Monday evening.

The PGA Tour then followed up to officially confirm the news.

Woods, 45, is the tournament host of this week's tournament in the Bahamas and it is anticipated the 15-time major champion will be on hand to welcome some of the game's best PGA Tour players.

The former World No.1 is also going to present the tournament like normal and he is likely going to be hitting balls at the back end of the range during the practice days, much to the delight of Woods fans around the world.

Woods has been recovering from leg injuries sustained during his horror car accident in Los Angeles back in February.

Earlier this month, Woods was seen hitting balls on camera for the first time since the car crash.

#NEW : I’m hearing that TW is going to be hosting the Hero World Challenge in person and that a press conference is going to happen tomorrow. Also told to not be surprised if he’s hitting balls on the back end of the range, source noted that he doesn’t wanna take away from event — TWLEGION (@TWlegion) November 29, 2021
Tiger is set to speak to the media for the first time since the accident, and will be hosting his tournament in person, also his first official public appearance. It comes just a week after he posted a swing video, prompting speculation of a comeback. pic.twitter.com/VIWSaK1nmJ — TWLEGION (@TWlegion) November 29, 2021
It was time for him to talk and he’s going to at long last. With regard to his golf game, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s just along the lines of continuing to progress. Have to look at how he’s done these things before. — TWLEGION (@TWlegion) November 29, 2021

"Trust me TW will only add to the event," replied a Woods fan. "Get in some practice before Thursday and then let the golf take over. The top players welcome his presence."

"Cannot wait to see Tiger back, really hope this is true," said another.

One golf fan commented: "I don’t care if he’s hitting a wadded up tournament guide into an overflowing trash can, I’ll watch that for 6 hours straight."

There was already strong rumour Woods was going to be making an appearance this week after his yacht was spotted mooring in Albany.

The Hero World Challenge will see 20 of the game's best players tee it up for the Tiger's famous trophy.

Tournament favourite Rory McIlroy is certainly hoping the rumour of a Woods appearance is true.

"From what we've seen in short video clips, he's back to hitting golf balls which is great news and while he's not teeing it up in the Bahamas, it would be great if he was present as I'm sure it would be a big lift for not only Tiger but all golf fans," said McIlroy.

McIlroy headlines the betting, narrowly ahead of in-form Collin Morikawa.

Justin Thomas, Viktor Hovland, Jordan Spieth, Bryson DeChambeau, Xander Schauffele and Brooks Koepka will also fancy their chances of landing the spoils.

Tiger Woods live updates: Hero World Challenge complete coverage, analysis

Tiger Woods is making his first start since April this week.

getty images

Tiger Woods is playing his first golf tournament since the Masters — and the first since his April subtalar fusion surgery. Yep, Tiger’s back. We’re covering this week’s Hero World Challenge accordingly, and to help keep you in the know on all things Tiger, we’re aggregating all our reporting and updates below. Check back often!

Another familiar pairing

Sean Zak: To see Tiger Woods — the tournament “committee of one” as he likes to joke — choose Justin Thomas as his playing partner for Thursday’s opening round was unsurprising. Woods seems as close with Thomas as he is with any top-level pro. But when their scorecards moved in different directions Thursday, they ruined the chance of an encore Friday since the Hero World Challenge updates pairings after every round.

Instead, Woods will find himself playing alongside another of the Jupiter, Fl. faithful: Rickie Fowler. Recall that it was not just Thomas but Fowler as well who Woods cited as motivating factor during his comeback to the sport in 2017 and 2018. Thomas and Fowler routinely pressured Woods into backyard chipping sessions and practice rounds at Medalist. Both also starred on the winning 2017 Presidents Cup team, which was the first time we really heard that Woods was beginning to chart out his return. Fowler then went on to win the Hero World Challenge that December.

Fowler (+2) and Woods (+3) will tee off at Albany at 11:02 a.m. ET Friday.

One round down

Alan Bastable: Tiger Woods said he was rusty heading into his first competitive round in seven months. He was right.

When he wrapped his round at Albany just before 4 p.m. ET, Woods had made 4 birdies, 7 pars, 5 bogeys and 1 double-bogey on his way to a three-over 75 leaving him eight back of first-round co-leaders Brian Harman and Tony Finau.

Woods hit 6 of 13 fairways and 10 greens in regulation.

Asked afterward by Golf Channel’s what he got out of his round, Woods quipped, “I got a lot of shots.”

Woods said he struggled with a lack of commitment over shots, especially toward the middle of his round when the wind was whipping. He also cited a “lack of feels,” which is to be expected after such a long layoff. As for his physical state, Woods said only that he was “a little bit sore.”

He’s baaaaaack…

James Colgan: It’s been a rough morning for the (nonexistent) Tiger Woods haters. In his first tournament action in seven months on Thursday at the Hero World Challenge, Woods’ game has looked impressively sharp.

There have been a few high points thus far. There was the bombed drive on No. 1 (326 yards, the longest of the day), the mega-birdie-make on No. 5 (a 30-footer!), and, of course, a few towering iron shots into his first few greens. But more than any one moment or swing, the most impressive part of today has been watching Woods’ body in action again. His swing looks more fluid and athletic than it has at any point since the car accident in early 2021, and his gait looks slightly less tenuous. Yeah, he’s still gimpy and his swing is still top-heavy, but considering the circumstances, this is about as well as we could’ve hoped him to look.

Oh, and he’s managing an even-par score heading to the turn. Not bad considering the uncertainty around his game.

Tiger inspiring his peers in new way

Alan Bastable: It’s still stunning that the future of the PGA Tour was decided without input from the guy most responsible for the Tour’s present-day success. But here we are and now there Woods is — in his new role of Tour policy board member — attending meetings, taking calls and pecking away at his keyboard to make sure that, effective immediately, the Tour gets things right.

“Lot of time on the phone, emails, Zoom calls, phone calls, whatever it may be,” Justin Thomas said of Woods earlier this week. “He doesn’t take it lightly. Obviously, he’s spoken to it, but it was an honor for him to kind of get the torch passed to him from Arnold and Jack. So I think he’s looking at it as he wants to kind of pass that to whatever the following generation is.”

Thomas called Woods’ jump to action “inspiring,” which is a common sentiment on Tour. Woods has never starved for admiration from his peers, but now he’s earning it less so with his play and more so with his politicking.

What time does Tiger tee off?

Kevin Cunningham: At 11:52 a.m. ET on Thursday, it will finally happen: Woods will hit his first shot in competition since withdrawing from the Masters due to injury. Woods had a lot on his mind during his pre-tournament press conference , but now attention turns toward the course.

Tiger will play the first round alongside Justin Thomas, and you’ll be able to watch much of their round on TV.

Golf Channel will carry TV coverage for Thursday’s round at the Hero World Challenge beginning at 12:30 p.m. ET. Golf Channel will also show Tiger’s first tee shot just before noon. In addition, Peacock will provide a live simulcast of Golf Channel’s coverage.

Where’d Tiger go?

Dylan Dethier : I walked the first four holes with Woods on Wednesday morning and then stopped off with another group, figuring I’d catch up with Team Tiger on the back nine. Surprise — he only played nine holes!

His group, which included Hero CEO Dr. Pawan Munjal stopped at the turn. The word on the ground is that Dr. Munjal isn’t crazy about the length of an 18-hole round, anyway, so I think the group may have been just as happy with a lunch with Tiger rather than trekking the back nine. And Woods’ caddie-slash-manager Rob McNamara said that Woods playing nine holes had been part of the morning’s plan. But it’s a reminder that, despite his optimism going into the week, Woods’ health status remains a huge unknown.

Those four holes were rock-solid, for whatever that’s worth. Which isn’t much.

Tiger’s Pro-Am appearance cut short…

Woods played 9 holes Wednesday morning in the pro-am before repairing to the clubhouse for lunch. The pro-am is an 18-hole affair but Woods reportedly shortened his round to save himself for the main event. According to Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis , “It was a decision he made prior to play in an effort to save himself for the tournament. According to his camp there are no physical issues.” By all accounts, Woods was moving well, albeit with a slight limp, and swinging well, too.

Tiger at impact this morning—awesome photo from @Cannonball63 . So far so good! Off in the first pro-am group and moving well. Fairways and greens. Par-par-birdie start. Slight limp, but he says no ankle pain. (sidenote: Dr. Munjal's been working on his game! dialed in this AM) pic.twitter.com/sMLZBs40sU — Dylan Dethier (@dylan_dethier) November 29, 2023

Tiger’s making 3 gear changes…

Jonathan Wall : But one is tough to spot.

Tiger has some new toys in the golf bag this week that are impossible to miss. Two weeks after Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood debuted  TaylorMade’s Qi10 LS driver  in Dubai, Woods became the latest staffer to vet the Qi10 LS driver in competition.

There’s also the return of the lead tape…

How did Tiger’s press conference look up close?

Dylan Dethier: On the ground in the Bahamas, there was an element of deja vu to the proceedings. After all, this week on the golf calendar has become known as the week Tiger Woods stages his comebacks.

Some comebacks have worked. Others haven’t. But the man and the setting felt remarkably familiar; a reminder of how much has stayed the same.

That made it even easier to notice what’s changed.

What’s different this time? Read that HERE .

Tiger seems focused on his new role…

James Colgan: …as PGA Tour spokesman.

When he arrived at the lectern for his opening salvo from the Hero World Challenge — a frequent spot of Woods comebacks over the years — it was telling that his focus appeared to be on his new gig. For the first time in at least a decade, the most interesting thing about Tiger Woods was not his golf game nor his return to major championship contention but rather his newly-anointed position.

“We have to protect the integrity of our Tour and what that stands for going forward,” he said poignantly. “Trying to figure all that out in the past few months has been a very difficult task, but we have to protect what the Tour is for the players.”

More on Woods and his new job HERE .

Tiger puts PGA Tour leadership on notice

Sean Zak: Woods is now one of six players on the PGA Tour’s all-important Policy Board. He never once held that position during the peak of his playing days, but he does now, thanks to  a late-summer quasi coup  during which 41 pros demanded Woods be granted a place on the board.

Why did that happen? Woods is never keen to dive into detail, but for a man who doesn’t say much, it’s often telling when he repeats himself. Tuesday’s phrase of the day was just three telling words:  Can’t happen again . As in, what happened in the weeks leading up to maybe the most pivotal decision in PGA Tour history — the Tour’s framework agreement with the Saudi Public Investment Fund, which was made without Tour players’ knowledge — can’t…happen…again.

Read Woods’ entire message to PGA Tour leadership HERE .

How’s Tiger’s walk?

Jack Hirsh: Before he withdrew, the last scenes of Woods at the 2023 Masters weren’t pretty. One of the greatest athletes of his generation, if not of all time, could barely walk.

Nearly eight months and at least one surgery later, Woods says walking 72 holes over four consecutive days — which he has done only twice since the 2020 Masters — isn’t a worry anymore.

“I’m not concerned at all about walking it,” Woods said,  echoing what he told the Associated Press earlier this month . “It’s more, as I said, I don’t have any of the ankle pain that I had with the hardware that’s been placed in my foot, that’s all gone.”

Read more about Woods’ expectations for his health HERE .

Where will Tiger play in 2024?

Josh Berhow: At Tuesday’s press conference, Woods laid out his best-case scenario for a 2024 playing schedule. His plan is surprisingly aggressive, but one golf fans no doubt will love to hear.

“I think that best scenario would be maybe a tournament a month,” Woods said. “I think that’s realistic.”

Woods added that he’d probably have to start with the Genesis (his event, held in February at Riviera) and then something in March “near the Players.”

“Again, we have set up right now the biggest events are one per month,” he said, referring to the Tour’s eight Signature Events throughout the season. “It sets itself up for that. Now, I need to get myself ready for all that. I think this week is a big step in that direction.”

You can read more about Woods’ ambitious plans HERE .

Who’s Tiger’s caddie?

Jessica Marksbury : Tiger Woods and Joe LaCava spent 12 years together, but officially parted ways earlier this year as Woods focused on recovering from his latest surgery. After serving as a fill-in caddie for Steve Stricker,  LaCava sought Woods’ blessing  to start working with Patrick Cantlay full-time.

With Woods making his first competitive start since the Masters at this week’s  Hero World Challenge , there was much hypothesizing about who he would have on the bag. And it didn’t take long for the topic to come up in Woods’ pre-tournament press conference. The answer isn’t a big surprirse, with Woods tapping longtime friend and confidante Rob McNamara.

Full story on McNamara’s appointment HERE .

Tiger’s betting odds

Josh Sens: What are Woods’ chances in the  Hero World Challenge , at Albany, in the Bahamas? Las Vegas doesn’t like them. As of this writing, Woods is dead last on the betting board, at 40-1.

Woods is the GOAT. He’s also only human. We’re fading his chances this week but have thrown a couple darts elsewhere on the board. You can find my picks HERE .

Tiger’s tee time

Kevin Cunningham : It’s no surprise to see Woods paired with good friend Justin Thomas for the first round of the Hero. They’ll go off at 11:52 a.m. on Thursday, the seventh tee time of 10 on the day. Here are the others:

10:46 a.m. – Brian Harman, Lucas Glover 10:57 a.m. – Cameron Young, Sepp Straka 11:08 a.m. – Tony Finau, Wyndham Clark 11:19 a.m. – Keegan Bradley, Rickie Fowler 11:30 a.m. – Matt Fitzpatrick, Justin Rose 11:41 a.m. – Sam Burns, Scottie Scheffler 11:52 a.m. – Tiger Woods, Justin Thomas 12:03 p.m. – Jason Day, Collin Morikawa 12:14 p.m. – Will Zalatoris, Jordan Spieth 12:25 p.m. – Max Homa, Viktor Hovland

Tiger woods starts hot, struggles late friday at 2023 hero world challenge, share this article.

Tiger Woods started brilliantly Friday, but it was once again a struggle on the way back to the clubhouse.

Woods’ second round in the 2023 Hero World Challenge at Albany in the Bahamas got off to a brilliant start, making birdies on his first two holes and sitting 4 under thru 7 and at the turn. Similar to Thursday’s opening round, he struggled as the day wore on. However, Woods was five shots better Friday, shooting 2-under 70 at the unofficial event that benefits his TGR Foundation.

“It was better than yesterday, for sure,” Woods said. “I’ve been more committed than I was yesterday. I made a few mistakes and overall the round was better, for sure. The start was better, the middle part of the round was better. I missed a couple putts there towards the end I thought would have kept the round going and unfortunately it kind of stalled out a little bit. Certainly better than it was yesterday.”

Woods made bogey after a three putt from 13 feet on the par-4 13th. Then, with only 182 yards left on his second shot into the par-5 15th, he made bogey after his birdie putt rolled back into a greenside bunker where he played his third shot from.

Then on the par-4 16th, his approach shot came up short, and he was unable to get up and down, marking his third bogey in four holes.

He stopped the bleeding with a long birdie putt on the par-3 17th hole, salvaging the day and giving him a bit of momentum heading into the weekend.

When his second round finished, Woods ranked first in Strokes Gained: Off the Tee, but he was dead last in putting among the 20 players in the field. However, he sits at 1 over for the tourney after 36 holes in his return to action after nearly eight months.

Tiger Woods will return to competitive golf for the first time in nearly five months when he tees it up in the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas on Dec. 1-4, he announced on his Twitter account Wednesday.

Woods, 46, hasn't played since missing the cut at the 150th Open Championship at St. Andrews on July 15. The 15-time major champion made just three starts this past season; he was 47th at the Masters in April and withdrew after 54 holes at the PGA Championship in May.

The Hero World Challenge, which benefits Woods' foundation, will be played in Albany, outside Nassau. The 20-man field also includes Scottie Scheffler , Xander Schauffele , Jon Rahm , Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth . Norway's Viktor Hovland is the defending champion.

Woods announced Wednesday that Kevin Kisner and Tommy Fleetwood would round out the field.

Woods is still recovering from serious injuries he suffered in a car wreck outside Los Angeles in February 2021. He said doctors nearly amputated his right leg because of his injuries.

Woods announced Monday that he will be playing in The Match at Pelican Golf Club outside Tampa, Florida, on Dec. 10. He'll team up with Rory McIlroy in a 12-hole match against Spieth and Thomas under the lights.

Woods is also expected to play with his son, Charlie, in the PNC Championship in Orlando, Florida, on Dec. 17-18. He hasn't yet officially announced that he'll play in that event.

More Positive Signs For 'Rusty' Woods At Hero World Challenge But Scheffler And Spieth Take Charge

Tiger Woods continues his return on day two at the Hero World Challenge in The Bahamas

Tiger Woods Hero Drive

Tiger Woods’ hopes of winning on his long-awaited return may be fading, but the 15-time Major winner showed more encouraging signs during the second round of the Hero World Challenge in The Bahamas.

Starting the day on three-over par following a rusty back nine on Thursday, Woods was fast out of the gates with birdies at the opening two holes.

He made further gains at the 6th and 7th to make the turn in four under (32), before making a series of unforced errors on the back nine, not unlike the opening round.

The mistakes came on 13 and 15, and looked to be more mental errors than anything else.

First came a missed putt from short range on 13, and that was followed by the very rare sight of Woods putting into a bunker on the par-5 15th, where he had to hole from 15 foot to limit the damage to a bogey.

However, a lengthy putt did finally drop on the 17th to bring a smile back to the 82-time PGA Tour winner’s face.

“Cleaned up a little bit from yesterday for sure,” Woods said after his round.

Asked for his opinion on why he struggled on the back nine for the second day running, Woods was quick to reply.

“Maybe because I haven’t played for a while,” he responded, adding that he felt he displayed “better commitment” during round two.

The more encouraging signs for Woods and his fans was the way he drove the ball and the apparent ease with which he walked the course.

Woods is playing just his eighth tournament since he was involved in a car crash in February 2021, and he admitted that he was “rusty”.

Once the five-time winner of the Hero World Challenge had signed for a second-round 70, the leaders set about increasing their advantage going into the weekend.

And there were several of those, with Tony Finau , Brian Harman, Matt Fitzpatrick , Scottie Scheffler , Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth all enjoying the lead at some point during the second round.

World number one Scheffler (66) made eight birdies and looked set to take the lead on his own into final two days, before dropping a shot on the 18th.

However, with the 2022 Masters champion looking more assured once again on the greens, he’ll be the one to beat on the weekend.

Scheffler has been working with putting coach Phil Kenyon since the fall, and said after his round that he had “a much clearer picture” of things on the putting surfaces.

Spieth, meanwhile, was equally impressive on Friday afternoon, posting 67 to share the 36-hole lead with fellow previous Masters champion Scheffler.

Hero World Challenge scores:

  • -9 Scheffler, Spieth
  • -6 Fitzpatrick, Morikawa, Finau

Tiger Woods score

  • Round 2: -2 thru 18 (70)
  • Tournament: +1

Updates from...

WOODS PIPES IT OFF THE 1st

Woods is off and running with a 290 yarder down the middle of the first to leave him 138 in.

His wedge settles within 6ft and we've got an opening birdie putt coming up!

WOODS IN GREEN TODAY

BIRDIE AT THE 1st!

Woods converts from 6ft and he's under par straight away. Back to +2 for the tournament.

WHAT A START!

From 178 yards on the par 3 2nd hole he's stuffed it to within 5ft.

Could be a birdie-birdie start here.

BIRDIE-BIRDIE

What a start from Tiger! He's two-under after two holes and back to +1.

Great start from TW

Can Tiger capitalise on his fast start with another birdie (or better) on the par-5 3rd?He has 220 yards to go for his second.

JUST A PAR...

A missed 10-footer for birdie on the par-5 3rd there. Don't worry, we're not about to start with all the, 'In his prime, he'd have sunk that' stuff....However, in his prime he never missed a putt. Not one.

ON THE MOVE

Justin Rose (-2 through 2, -2 overall); Rickie Fowler (-3 through 3, -1 overall). And good to see another comeback man Will Zalatoris start well (-2 through 4, +7 overall). Leaders at -5.

LEFT FAIRWAY AT 4

287 yards to the left fairway, leaves a long one into the 4th, some 196 yards.

TIGER ROLLING THE ROCK

Admit it, you never thought yo'd see this again...

HOW TO WATCH THE HERO WORLD CHALLENGE

In case you're wondering when you can tune in to watch Tiger & co in the Bahamas, here's how to watch the Hero World Challeng e.

SAFELY ABOARD ON 4

Tough hole is 4, but TW is safely aboard the green facing a 23-footer for birdie.

POSITIVE SIGNS FOR ZALATORIS FANS

We've waited a long time to see young William Zalatoris back in action. After a tough time yesterday, he's come out firing. He's now -3 through 5 and back to +6.

looks good, right?

Dialed in early 🎯@TigerWoods starts his second round with a nice approach on No. 1. pic.twitter.com/VdxDQl7L2W December 1, 2023

TW PAR AT 5

A tidy enough two-putt par at 5 for Woods. He remains -2 and +1 overall. He's playing with Rickie Fowler today who is also going along nicely. Hopefully these two quality ball strikers can feed off one another and climb that leaderboard.

BIG DRIVE ON PAR-5 6TH

Plenty of good signs early on in the second round for Woods, who has just sent another drive down the fairway - this one measuring 307 yards, which leaves him about 280 to go.

UP-AND-DOWN FOR BIRDIE?

Tiger Woods finds the sand, which is easy to do here in The Bahamas, and has one of those lengthy bunker shots for his third - the type amateurs call hard but pros make look easy. Let's see what Tiger has for us...

TIGER WITH 5FT FOR BIRDIE...

It was a wonderful third shot from the bunker. He needed that to build on that fast start. Woods is now back to even par for the tournament. Nicely done. Exactly how he would have hoped to start the day.

Elsewhere...

Because there are, you know, a few other decent players here. Justin Thomas has started beautifully (-4) with two birdies in his first two holes. Matt Fitzpatrick moves to within two of the lead, with a birdie on the 2nd. Leaders at -5. Not long now until everyone is out on the course.

GREENSIDE BUNKER

TW has a slash at that one and finds the front left greenside bunker, some 55ft from the hole. Something similar to the last hole required for birdie...

TIGER ON HIS BIKE

Tiger Woods Motorbike

A lot of talk about Tiger Woods and all his injuries lately, but he looked to be in no trouble at all as he arrived on his motorbike earlier with his bag across his back.

WE'RE UNDER PAR

What a second shot that was. Something tells me Tiger's been hitting balls in his backyard. Another peach of a long bunker shot sets up a birdie putt from 4ft - which he sinks. We're under par, -4 for the day through 7 and -1 overall. Old Tiger stats.

TROUBLE ON 8

Work to do for Woods on the par-3 8th - 8 foot for par. The word 'momentum' comes to mind.

LIVE COVERAGE

You can watch Tiger Woods' comeback at the Hero World Challenge . We have five players in the lead at -5.

Tiger Woods rolls in an 8-footer for par on 8 - right in the center. He's four shots back. There are going to be some low ones out there today. Five par 5s on the course, drivable par 4s. Just depends on the wind as to how low these 20 players can go. A day when bogeys will feel like doubles.

GREAT DRIVE ON 9

A low one from Tiger Woods on the 9th, just the 347 yards. He'll be eyeing up another birdie here. The question is, will fatigue play any part today? He looks to be moving nice and freely at present.

FINAU TO -6

New leader, it's Big Tone. The laid back American gets to -6 with a birdie on the 1st.

WOODS IN GOOD SHAPE

The good run could continue courtesy of two very good shots into the par-5 9th. He's just through the green with room to work with. Lovely low cut there to chase it up, just runs through.

A rare blemish

Comes out softly, no tap-in birdie as expected. We'll have some work to do....

HOT TO RETAKE THE LEAD

By Tony Finau...

A chip-in birdie to take the lead 💪@TonyFinauGolf is out front at the Hero World Challenge. pic.twitter.com/mLrU0yEVJG December 1, 2023

TIGER OUT IN 32 (-4)

Tiger rams in the par putt after running his birdie effort 3 feet by. He was odds on for another birdie there, but that's still a very tidy outward nice for the 15-time Major champion.

trouble on 10 for tiger

A tough tee shot back into the breeze and Tiger looks to be in a bit of trouble, maybe the lip of the bunker. Not an easy hole, just fails to carry that trap and it could lead to his first bogey of the day. We shall see...

good break on 10

Not the best of stances, but Tiger has somehow not rolled into the fairway trap on 10. Three-quarter swing and he finds the front of the green. Nicely done. Outside chance of a birdie.

TROUBLE FOR FINAU

Our leader lost his tee shot on the 3rd, and we're going to see some changes at the top of the leaderboard. He's now played four and he's not on the green. Fitzpatrick will probably have a chance to lead with a nice approach on 6.

TIGER WALKING WELL

The best news is that Tiger Woods is walking with more of a spring in his step, no hobbling at this stage. Good speed with his lag putt on 10. That will be a par.

DOUBLE FOR FINAU

Now Tony Finau is a pretty laid back guy, but the blood pressure will surely have gone up after that mess on the 3rd. He was leading at -6, but he's just made a seven there, a good seven at that. All came after losing his opening shot. Makes a 15-footer for double. Hats off. Gritty.

FAIRWAY ON 11 FOR TW

Another great swing on 11 and Woods continues to impress. The tempo looks fantastic. He's flushing it.

JASON DAY ON THE MOVE

Four birdies in a row for the Aussie, and he's just one shot back. Nice to see Day rolling the ball sweetly on the green. The former world number one in decent shape at -5.

WOODS SHORT ON 11

Maybe a bit of wind trouble there, but Woods is facing a tricky little up-and-down on the 11th. We say tricky, but Woods will probably fancy it.

STRIPE SHOW

Tiger Woods ball striking

The story of the day so far: Tiger Woods striping it.

Paul McGinley likes that one. A bladey type of chip from Woods, who gets it up-and-down for par on 11. Opts not to go the aerial route. Top marks for creativity. We don't see enough of that in the modern game, but that's a topic for another day.

TIGER FINDS GREEN ON 12

Par-3 12th. Looks a peach of a hole, albeit a dangerous one. Woods flushes that, keeping it down underneath the wind, whilst Matt Fitzpatrick misses a good opportunity to take the solo lead on 7. Another big positive for Woods who doesn't seem to have lost his ability to see the shot he needs. He's executing them, too.

SWEARY SPIETH

Very high standards. Spieth is not happy with that one on 6. Blame the caddie, who's new. His normal looper is having a well-deserved week off.

England's Matt Fitzpatrick looking ominous with that flat stick, rolls in another one to take the solo lead - he's -5 through 8 and -7 overall.

THOMAS JOINS FITZ AT TOP

That kind of day, lots of changes. JT is looking very good right now. Meanwhile, Woods drops his first shot of the day at 13, back to even par with a missed three-footer there. That'll wind him up.

WOODS NOW 7 BACK

Despite the promising signs - and they are very promising - Woods is a distant seven back right now. Needs a strong final five holes. Drivable 14th next up... leaves it down in the dip, so he's going to need his best touch to get that up-and-down, playing up a steep bank. Not beyond his capabilities, by any means.

DELICATE FROM WOODS

Back to 14 and Woods nips one off cleanly to set up a birdie chance, about 8 feet or so. He could do with sinking that one for an immediate bounce-back following the sloppy bogey on 13.

BIRDIE FOR WOODS

Pulls it. Back-to-back holes where Woods has failed to convert inside 10 feet. Not unexpected. Would be a shame if he can't finish off what has been a good round so far. A few signs of rust on the greens in the last 20 minutes.

SCRAPPY FROM WOODS

Woods in a bit of danger of letting today's good work slip away. A loose shot there on the par-5 15th into the sand. Still a chance he can get that up and down for his birdie, which would bring a smile back to his face.

OH DEAR!

Is that rust? Not so sure. Makes a mess of his bunker shot and then putts into the bunker.... not a good number coming here on what is a very scoreable part of the course.

GOOD BOGEY?

Woods limits the damage to a bogey with a gritty 15 footer for a 6. Scratching my head. When did Tiger last putt into a bunker?

CHANGES AT THE TOP

Spieth leads. Remember him? Decent player. He's -3 for the day and -7 overall. Thomas is back to -6 after a rollercoaster on the 11th.

TIGER SLIPPING

Not literally, but he's throwing shots away here a bit like yesterday. Back-to-back bogeys. He's now on the 17th green. And sinks a bomb! Back to +1.

ZALATORIS WITH A NEW PUTTER

Misses a putt for a 67 a day after he shot 81. A 13-shot turnaround for the man making his comeback. That looked a lot better. Fingers crossed the American enjoys a healthy 2024. If he does, he's going to win things, that's for sure. Still not sure about that putting technique, but who am I to criticise someone who has finished runner-up in three of the four Major Championships.

TIGER WITH POOR FINAL APPROACH

From the first cut. 172 yards. Hand off the club and he just manages to avoid bouncing into the water. Wasn't the best of lies, not easy to control from there. Needs to get up and down for par, and I've got a feeling he's going to treat us to one final good chip of the day.

BEAUTY FROM TIGER

The short game looks good, as does the long game. That's an excellent chip and he taps in for a 70. Just those uncharacteristic mistakes.

TIGER CARDS 70

It promised to be so much better at one stage, but just a 70. A lot of good shots in there, but some uncharacteristic mistakes, too. You have to expect that after seven months out. This is also just his eight tournament since he was involved in that awful car crash in February 2021.

"I'M RUSTY"

Well, yeah. Asked the question as to why he seemed to be struggling to close out rounds, Woods responds: "Maybe because i haven't played in a while." You tell 'em, Tiger.

TIDY SHORT-GAME SKILLS

Matt Fitzpatrick showing off and making himself unpopular with the greenkeepers.

THREE AT THE TOP

Matt Fitzpatrick, Scottie Scheffler and Jordan Spieth now share the lead at -7. I fancy -10 might be leading this by the end of the day.

MAKE THAT 4

Thomas, Fitz, Scottie and Spieth are having some kind of shootout here. All well into the back nine. -7 leads.

THE CREAM HAS RISEN TO THE TOP

Scheffler gets it to -8 through 14. Fitzpatrick almost jumps past him with a 360-degree lip out. Still, he's -6 for his round and he shares the lead with the American.

BUNKER TROUBLE FOR JT

What a horrid lie. JT buried greenside on 16 but plays a fantastic shot, chopping down and popping it out to about 5 feet. Very good. Cleans up to stay at -7.

Glover with an ace on 17. The former US Open champion has a one and an eight on his card. Can't imagine how much a round of beers at this place costs, but I'm sure he can afford it.

DOUBLE FOR FITZPATRICK

Didn't see that one coming. Tee shot into the scrub to blame and the Englishman drops back to -6. Scheffler, meanwhile, gets it to -9 and he still has three holes to play. No one will want to see Scottie heading into the weekend with shots to play with. Sound the Scottie Scheffler alarm. When he's hot, he's hot. He might be extending that lead soon.

SPIETH TO -9

Scheffler and Spieth lead at -9, the latter seeing his fourth eagle attempt of the day coming up inches short.

HERE'S THAT ACE

🚨 Hole-in-one! 🚨Lucas Glover hops it in for an ace at No. 17. pic.twitter.com/p1ZJZvsLYd December 1, 2023

I like to think Lucas Glover will be receiving a huge bar bill for this effort, so big it wipes out most of his obscene earnings in 2023.

SCOTTIE BEING SCOTTIE

-10. -7 for the day, this is more the Scottie we've been used to seeing over the last couple of years. Is that work he's doing with putting coach Phil Kenyon paying off already?

LAST TEE SHOT FOR THE LEADER

Scheffler finds the sandy area down the 18th, but it might have bounced out of it. The world number one would take a par here, then he can put his feet up and buy Phil Kenyon a drink. It's an early call, but I'm saying Scheffler wins at least two Majors next year - not the Masters, Tiger wins that by seven.

TROUBLE FOR SCOTTIE ON 18

Greenside bunker on 18. He's facing water, too, which pros don't seem to get too fazed by. Lie isn't great. How's your feel, Scottie? 8/10. Lovely splash shot, but he still has about 6-8 feet for par on 18. On 17, Spieth grazes the edge of the hole, good chance gone there after a beautiful tee shot.

DAY 2 COMING TO AN END

The second round is coming to a conclusion. Scheffler shoots a 66, with his par effort on 18 missing right. Meanwhile, Cameron Young with the drive of the day, using the TV tent/tower/building/thing to good effect. It's a fairway found on 18, when it was really 30 yards wide. At least.

SPIETH FOR THE OUTRIGHT...

How has that not dropped? A 67 for Spieth. That was clinical from the three-time Major champion today.

SCHEFFLER ON HIS PUTTING

"I have much more of a clearer picture." That could spell trouble for his rivals in 2024.

HARMAN IN THE MIX

The final few words of the day for The Open champion, Brian Harman. He's just one shot back after playing the last five holes in five under. Join us again tomorrow for what promises to be a fantastic weekend in The Bahamas.

Hero World Challenge

The new home of the Hero World Challenge

This December, the Hero World Challenge will make its new home at Albany in The Bahamas. The luxury resort community, set on 600 oceanside acres on the island of New Providence, is the collective vision of its founders — Joe Lewis and Tavistock Group, and Tiger Woods. Albany is proud to be home to the Hero World Challenge, jointly hosted by these two friends.

Conveniently located just minutes from Nassau’s international airport and two private airfields, Albany is easily accessible with direct international flights.

The community opened in 2010 and features an unparalleled combination of surroundings, architecture, sporting amenities and service. The rare collection of amenities is highlighted by a luxury boutique hotel comprised of private residences, a mega-yacht marina, a state-of-the-art fitness center with boxing, yoga and Pilates and a CrossFit course, relaxing spa and salon, several pools and family water park, kids’ clubhouse and programming, a variety of restaurants and a unique, desert links-designed championship golf course.

Sure to challenge this year’s field, the 7,400-yard, par-72 course designed by Ernie Els is characterized by windswept dunes and a number of scenic and strategically challenging water features.

Whether visiting Albany for a vacation or residing there full time, the community provides something for all ages and pursuits. From villas and custom home lots to exquisite marina residences, the accommodations at Albany provide some of the most luxurious living spaces in the Caribbean.

Experience Albany through the 2015 Hero World Challenge, the first PGA TOUR-sanctioned event in The Bahamas. To be a part of the gallery at the Hero World Challenge held at Albany, visit heroworldchallenge.com .

Who’s caddying for Tiger Woods at the Hero World Challenge? Here’s the audacious story of his big break

NASSAU, Bahamas — Rick Rielly, the longtime director of golf at Wilshire Country Club, still remembers the first time Rob McNamara showed up to work for him.

“He was 13 or 14 years old and 80 pounds sopping wet,” he said. “He shows up with a towel, he might’ve had a ball retriever and I had him sit on the bench outside the golf shop until something opened up for a single because the caddie yard was a bit gruff in those days.”

Thirty-five years or so later, McNamara has a single bag for the next four days at the Hero World Challenge – the one and only Tiger Woods.

With Joe LaCava, Woods’s caddie since 2011, having moved on to Patrick Cantlay last year when Woods was sidelined following surgery to his right ankle in April, Woods was in need of a bagman this week – and likely at the PNC Championship and beyond – and turned to his right-hand man in McNamara, who has been one of his closest confidants for more than two decades.

“He’s seen me hit a few shots,” Woods said, underselling the value McNamara has brought to his game since he went without a coach beginning in 2017.

All those years ago, McNamara’s father, who had a thick Irish brogue and lived in the neighborhood, talked his way past the gate at Wilshire, a private club not far from Hollywood, and charmed Rielly into giving his son his start in the game. McNamara was shy with a goofy laugh and a thick head of curly hair, but before long members took a liking to him and he worked his way into the bag room while also developing into a decent stick. He went off to Santa Clara University in Northern California and played on the golf team, graduating as a physics major in 1997, just as Tiger was getting started as a worldbeater. But it was golf not science where McNamara eyed making his mark.

After college, Rielly’s father, Pat, moved into the picture as an important figure in McNamara’s career development. Pat was a former PGA president and director of golf at Annandale Country Club in Pasadena, and hired McNamara as an assistant pro, working in the shop. It wasn’t long before McNamara realized the club pro ranks wasn’t the path for him.

He did a stint at a start-up golf web site but when that company went under, Pat assisted on his next big break. When McNamara showed an interest in working as a sports agent, Pat asked his other son, Mike, who worked at IMG –the sports marketing giant founded by Mark McCormack – to arrange an interview. Pat was a good judge of talent, and McNamara got hired in 2000 as an account manager. Shortly after he moved to Cleveland and started at the firm that represented Arnold Palmer, Annika Sorenstam and Woods, one of the company’s top executives, Alastair Johnston, invited McNamara to his office for a get-to-know meeting.

“It took only a few minutes for Alastair to explain that in all his years Mr. McCormack had never weighed in on a hire at my level before, but after one short call with Pat that all had changed,” McNamara told Golfweek in 2022. “Pat somehow managed to convince Mark, a power-broker attorney and sports-marketing pioneer, that I was the only possible candidate that could handle the job and that it would be a massive mistake for IMG to miss out on this random ex-college golfer who at 24 years old had little to no experience.”

The curly hair is long gone but McNamara has gone on to become Woods’ right-hand man, with an official title of executive vice president of TGR Ventures.

In his early days at IMG, new media was new and he was a digital native, who helped protect Tiger’s rights.

“None of us knew what it meant, and Rob figured it out,” Mike Rielly said.

He became part of Team Tiger with the likes of Kathy Battaglia and Chris Hubman, later leaving IMG together when Woods formed his own company. Outside of Mark Steinberg, who has served as Tiger’s longtime agent, McNamara’s been one of Tiger’s most loyal and longest-tenured associates through thick and thin, a contemporary who speaks the same language and a second set of eyes and ears he depends on. It’s a remarkable trajectory from teenage caddie to being in the inner circle with the greatest golfer of his time in a relationship where the respect goes both ways.

“Seeing Robert on TV today, it’s pretty cool to see a kid who started out being overwhelmed and look where he is today,” Rick Rielly said. “He got his break and he took it.”
