The X-Ray catamaran is developed by Rhebergen Multihull Yachts at Amsterdam in cooperation with Lars Oudrup to be a very fast day-sailer with camping style accommodation, based on the experiences with the Havkat 31 cats, previousy built by RMY. The X-ray is a gorgeous, versatile and indeed very fast catamaran sufficiently seaworthy for spartan voyages along the Nort-west European coasts and trips over tidal shallows. The prototype "Vlerk" is built in the composite strip planking method (woodcore) with western red cedar strips, glass and epoxy, resulting in beautiful long lasting, strong and yet light hulls. The "Vlerk" can be controlled from the comfortable wingseats and offers two berths in the small bridgedeck-cabin, with a lot of extra room under the spacious cockpit tent. In the winter of 2024 both hulls, rudders, daggerboards and the mast were painted and varnished again and decorated with fresh striping. It makes this unique catamaran look like a new boat. Only the sails may have to be renewed in one of the next years.

Description

Hey FallGuy, I’m with you… My project is an ultralight full displacement power boat. A monohull. 40 feet long 8 feet wide and 5500 pounds all up. Bare boat is intended to weigh in at 4500 pounds. Cedar strip and really basic but meant for coastal cruising here in British Columbia. 20hp diesel will push it at 8.5 knots burning 1/2 litre per hour. Top speed of 12 knots on a good day. Anyway, I was getting concerned about the weight so started to change some of my “rugged” building habits. The cabin top is now balsa core instead of more strip planking. The interior is really basic and made mostly from 1/4” ply and stringers. I should weigh it to see where I’m at….

@Ron Badley your project sounds very interesting - I would love to find out more about it, but rather than drifting Oldmulti's thread, would you like to start a new thread about it, perhaps in the boatbuilding forum please?

A 27 year old guy named Josh saw a Polynesian Double canoe (the first jpeg) produced for pacific island transport/trade and was inspired to build one for himself. He is a whale watch catamaran charter captain so he knows a bit about the sea. He decided to design it himself after an internet search showed many jpegs of the original cat. The project he started was named "The Vaka Meraki" and is intended to be 52 x 21 foot of unknown displacement which will carry a Wharram gaff wing sail ketch rig. The reason the specifications are a bit vague is there are few calculations, minimal forward planning and a very strong get it done attitude. The concept is to design and build symmetrical front and back hull halves with the exception of the 6.5 foot bow section and the 6.5 foot stern section. The hull shape is OK but not the best I have seen. A low aspect ratio keel is intended to be attached to the hulls. The intention is to be a sailing cat with good motors. The advantage of the design approach is you can build a quarter hull mould for 4 hull section which will form 2 hulls. Then create a bow mould and a stern mould to create the 2 bows and 2 sterns. To create the hull mould MDF (chipboard) frames were created and stringers were attached forming the base of a male mould. 3 mm MDF sheets with a melamine face were then laid over the fame to finish the male mould. Good so far. Now it came time to fair the quarter mould so a female mould could made. Problem. Josh lives in a sub tropical area with high humidity and temperature variation. The MDF sucked moisture and then dried over a day, result the male mould moved during a day making it impossible to fair. Next idea was to use thin plywood for more male mould stability. More fairing followed with acceptance of any dips in the male mould surface as being OK as the resulting female mould would leave a shallow dip in the real hull surface that can be filled. After about a year worth of part time work the male mould was “ready” for the female mould to be produced. The male mould was covered a Gelcoat, a 300 csm mat in vinylester and additional fiberglass layers totalling about 600 gsm in polyester. The resulting fiberglass female mould still on the male mould was considered too flexible and required some reinforcement. Plastic water pipes were laid and glued to the female mould to provide additional rigidity. It was intended to put fiberglass over the pipes to provide additional stiffness. The first glassing run on a small section of pipe pulled the mould out of shape in that area. No more additional glassing done over the reinforcing pipes. We are now about 18 months in. Now we take a detour. Josh decided to build a 24 foot proa. The main hull was again a simple female mould which again taught him a lot about female moulding, remember to use catalyst in your resin mix etc. When putting in bulkheads, decks and floors etc he found it to be a time consuming task. The proa float hull is 2 beach cat hulls cut at mid section and glued back to back. The proa is virtually complete. Back to the 52 footer. After moving house Josh is still intending to continue with the build but will recommence with a clean up of the mould and continuing to build the bow and stern moulds. I admire this man’s determination but a lot of lessons can be learnt from his experience. The main one is do not start a project without fully understanding and planning what your intended outcome is. Designers are a cheap investment if they can provide you with build experience and problem solutions. EG Harryproa Intelligent Infusion uses stiff cheap MDF female moulds that do not require a male mould up front. You can literally produce a hull in weeks, not years. Other designers like Grainger allow you to build a flat panel boat with a separate round bilge bottom attached etc. The jpegs give the idea. Josh has a youtube blog (about 15 episodes before taking a break) but you can start at Josh’s web site is at: I'm 27 years old and building a 52ft catamaran in my backyard with no plans "The Vaka Meraki" | Sailing Forums, page 1 https://www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Sailing/General/I-m-27-years-old-and-building-a-52ft-catamaran-in-my-backyard-with-no-plans--The-Vaka-Meraki-?page=1

This is about an interesting fast day sailing, camp cruising catamaran that was a prototype of a production cat. The X-Ray catamaran was developed by Rhebergen Multihull Yachts Holland in cooperation with Lars Oudrup, a very competent yacht designer. The X-Ray cat is 27.3 x 17.5 foot with a weight of 1,460 lbs and a displacement of 2,020 lbs. The 43 foot aluminium 115 x 230 mm rotating wing mast carries a 405 square foot battened square top mainsail and a 122 square foot self tacking roller furling jib. Standing rigging is 1x19 stainless steel wire. A prodder carries Code zero’s etc. The length to beam is about 14 to 1. The draft ranges from 1.3 to 4 foot over the daggerboards. The rudders are transom mounted. This cat is focussed on performance not luxury as indicated by the wing seating to increase the cats power and comfort for racing. The numbers would indicate this is a fast cat. If anyone has any knowledge of race results, Texel ratings etc it would be appreciated. The accommodation is limited. The deck pod has two 6.5 x 2 foot berths with 3.3 foot headroom. There is a small stove and not much else. The hulls are storage at best. The cockpit has seating for 4 and an engine under 1 seat with fuel and other storage under the other seat. Some jpegs show a boom tent for additional accommodation. The X-Ray is built in the composite strip planking with western red cedar strips, glass and epoxy, resulting in a long lasting, strong and light hulls. The hulls clear varnished western red cedar over the epoxy. This is a guess, but imagine 9 mm WRC with 300 gsm biaxial cloth in epoxy. Deck superstructure construction is a foam glass sandwich. Cross beams are wood-epoxy-glass construction. Windows are plastic glued to the superstructure. The hull finish is beautiful but would be impractical in Australia sunlight unless maintenance is a fun for you. The jpegs give the idea. 80,000 euro’s and you can own it. Now a small sideline, Lars Oudrup reduced his designing when he found you could buy a production Lagoon 380 for half the cost of a custom one off build of a 38 footer. Lars is a very good designer who knows how to design fast cruising catamarans, who is frustrated by the high cost of labor to build good boats. I will feature one of his designs later.

Thank you, "oldmulti" for the B24-pdf in page 39 . Seems like Crowther was thinking in terms of dolphin striker when he designed the Buccaneer 24. Will back-engineer the beam design and use for my own small tri. Great way to learn!

The Lars Oudrup designed Havkat 24 was an alternative for his production fiberglass MY-Cat 26 foot micro racing cat (IOMR of 1.0), page 35 of this thread. The MY-Cat was a constant winner in the class. The Havkat 24 is 24.6 x 16.5 foot with a weight of 1,460 lbs and a displacement of 2,600 lbs. The 36 foot rotating aluminium mast carries a 295 square foot mainsail with a 96 square foot self tacking jib. Many other sail options like Genoa’s and Code 0 are available. The draft range between 1 and 4 foot over the daggerboards. The rudders are transom hung dagger rudders. The cat is powered by a 6 HP long shaft outboard. The accommodation is 4 single berths in the hulls, minimal galley and porta loo. The headroom is 4.5 foot. The cockpits are more comfortable than a pure racing cat. The aim of this cat is a high performance cruiser racer for those who wanted a home built version of the 26 foot MY-cat. The Havkat 24 is a little shorter and lighter and therefor easier to handle, both on the water as on land. The build is “frameless” strip plank western red cedar with biaxial cloth in epoxy on either side. The main beam is a strip plank glass in epoxy construction. The fore and aft beams are aluminium tubes. The dagger cases are glass. To give you an idea of the performance capability of the Havkat 24 it rates about the same as a Farrier 28R or a F31 with spinnaker. In short high performance. The jpegs are of a partially built Havkat 24 to give the idea. The last jpeg is of the MY-cat that inspired the Havkat 24.

The final Lars Oudrup design for now is one of more popular, the Havkat 31. The following information is a combination of several boats specifications EG the displacement is an actual weight not the design weight. The Havkat 31 is 31.2 x 19.5 foot with a weight of 3,800 lbs and a displacement of 6,300 lbs. The 7/8 rig has a 51 foot fixed aluminium 3 spreader mast, that carries a 500 square foot battened mainsail, a 65 square foot storm jib, a 265 square foot self tacking jib, a 474 square foot drifter, a 990 square foot gennaker and a 1,230 square foot spinnaker. The rigging is Dyeform 1x19 ss-wire with Dyneema backstays. All this sail on a light cat results in an IOMR of 0.9157. This is fast for a cruiser racer for this size. The hull length to beam at the waterline is 10.4 to 1. The daggerboard draft is 6.1 foot with a minimum draft of 1.3 foot. The rudders are stern mounted daggerboard kickups. The underwing clearance is 3.5 foot. The outboard is 20 HP. The accommodation in the hull consists of a double bed in the back of the port hull and a single bed in the starboard bow and stern. In the port hull you will find the navigation area and bathroom. The toilet is equipped with a holding tank. The galley is located in the starboard hull. Headroom in the hulls is 6.2 foot. The central cockpit is large and can have a removable tent Bimimi top over with 5 foot headroom. The structure of the Havkat 31 is made from a sandwich of polyester and PVC foam. The paint system is Hempel LB 25. The internal fit outs are plywood. The main crossbeams are foam glass with aluminium aft and bow beams. The foils are foam glass blades. The equipment tells you this boat can cruise the Havkat 31 with two 10 kg Bruce anchors each with 26 foot of chain and 160 foot of rope; a Microwave with oven-function, a Waeco Compressor refrigerator and 160 litres of water tanks. This is a very practical fast cruiser racer for those who really want to sail. A good design. The jpegs give the idea.

havkat31 sailplan.jpg

H31 study plan.jpg, havkat31 deckplan.jpg.

The following cruising pacific proa has been designed by Othmar Karschulin and built by Manfred Meier in Germany. Othmar Karschulin has been a long term proa enthusiast doing many creative smaller designs with a variety of rigs. This proa is named “Mareinoa” and is 39.2 x 23 foot with a weight of 4900 lbs and a displacement of 6250 lbs. An additional 300 to 450 lbs of water ballast can be carried in the float for additional righting moment. Unfortunately, the water ballast volume must be estimated and replenished in the port for a day sail as no load or unload facility whilst sailing is installed yet. The dual A frame 44 foot mast bases are mounted on the crossbeams and joined at the mast head to carry a roller furling main on a wire of 295 square foot and a roller furling jib of 295 square foot to either bow. The draft over the rudder daggerboards is 5 foot when down with a draft of 1.4 foot when the boards are up. The length to beam on the main hull looks about 13 to 1. The outboard power is 15 HP. The pod on the main hull serves 2 purposes which is increased accommodation and an assistance to righting if the proa is overpowered. The accommodation is 2 double berths, a galley with storage and limited internal seating. The use of the pod area allows the double berths to be 6.5 x 6 foot wide. The cockpit is spacious without the interruption of a single mast. The build materials are Airex sandwich panels and epoxy resin/biaxial triaxial glass cloths which have an excellent stiffness/weight ratio with outstanding insulation properties. The insulation properties are needed as some of the test sails were done in 4 degrees centigrade. The cross beams used are composite with flanges to hold the beams in are steel. Did I forget to mention this proa is transportable. There is a jpeg of it packed up on an 8 foot wide trailer behind an SUV (PS I cannot copy the jpeg). I would not suggest this is a normal procedure but if you wanted to get to the Med fast, its possible. Now we get to performance. The performance is confusing and I will give you some quotes “In light winds the speed is quite considerable. I measured 4.4 - 5.6 knots at 1.8 - 3.1 knots true wind. At 5-6 knots true wind the boat speed was between 6 and 9.3 knots. All this data were taken on a course close to the wind. But because of the relatively high speed this means 90 degrees to the true wind.” “Pointing high to the wind in low speed sailing became quite uncomfortable because the small hull pitched heavily in the waves.” “The reefing process through the three reefing systems is extremely easy. To shunt you have to roll up the genoa then to turn around the main, to lift the first rudder, to lower the second rudder and to roll out the second genoa. This manoeuvre takes almost one minute. With two well skilled people I guess it might be possible to come down to 30 seconds but still it is not comparable to tacking of a monohull.” “I don't want to blame the only mediocre sailing performances on the wind on the rig. The planned optimization measures will hopefully improve this.” Translation of all the above. We have an easily to handle pacific proa that needs refinement in its windward performance. It can sail in stronger winds but has not proven itself at the time of the tests. The mast and rig appear to work well. If anyone knows of later tests or performance reports it would be appreciated. The jpegs give the idea of an interesting design with an easy to handle rig.

I have seen a few jpegs of this tri before but I have seen little detail but now we have additional information. This is a Dick Newick custom design mainly aimed for day sailing with additional simple accommodation for longer trips. The full wingdeck design would be a great fast fun boat. The tri is 27.9 x 22 foot with a weight of 1900 lbs. The displacement is a guess of about 2700 lbs. The 37 foot rotating wing mast of 300 x 127 mm carbon box with fairings, carries between 450 to 600 square foot of sail with a self tacking jib. The central daggerboard draws about 5 foot. The outboard rudder is stern mounted with a vertical raising system. The tri is powered by two 4 HP outboards which drive the tri at 8 knots at half throttle. The accommodation is simple with 1 berth in front and 1 in after-compartment, 2 more trampoline-style seat/berth's in the open 2.2m x2.2m mid-cockpit. A limited galley, portable toilet and limited seat is available internally. The tris is foam sandwich construction using PVC foam, unidirectional glass and vinylester/epoxy with some carbon fibre reinforcement. The original builder sold the tri to its new owner, who only sailed it once before it broke a mooring line and damaged a bow which required a repair. Additional work was done to clean the tri up but it has the classic Newick lines. Imagine a smaller wing version of a 30 foot Val. The jpegs give the idea. A great looking tri.

The Frigate 26 racer cruiser catamaran “Waterwings” was designed in 1992 and initially built by Doug Halacre an hovercraft, aircraft and part time catamaran designer. The design was sold to another person for completion. After many years the project was abandoned and is being sold at a very cheap price for someone else to complete. The cat is 26.3 x 16.5 foot with a weight of 1200 lbs and a displacement of 1800 lbs. The rig is a “cat” rig with a 39 foot large rotating wing mast of 97 square foot and carries a 388 square foot mainsail with 8 full length batterns. There is also a 540 square foot spinnaker. The rigging is 1 x 19 stainless steel. The cat has pivoting centreboards and through hull daggerboard rudders and cases. The draft overall varies from 1 foot to 4 foot. The length to beam on the hulls looks about 12 to 1 (guess). Reasonable OK so far. Now we get to the real fun part. Imagine an 8 foot wide monohull and cut it straight down the keel line to form two 4 foot wide hulls. This cats hulls are very asymmetric. This follows the trend set by Doug Halacre first design, a plywood hard chine asymmetric hull open 26 foot cat called Jet 26. The Jet 26 was 26 x 15.5 foot and displaced 990 lbs and carried a 300 square foot sloop rig on an X beam cross beam. I will find the jpeg in a few days for the Jet 26 cat. Back to “Waterwings”, its asymmetric hulls still provide some accommodation with 4 single berths and 4.4 foot headroom. The hull construction is epoxy/gaboon plywood cold moulded with e glass and carbon epoxy composite reinforcement. The aluminum crossbeams have a plywood extension on the main beam to handle the mast rotation track required to handle the large wing mast. The attached web address gives the best jpeg indication of “Waterwings” as a sailing cat. Its in Dutch but the jpegs are good. https://www.multihull.nl/Folders/frigate26/frigate26.ctc.html This is an interesting design and build that I hope will be completed one day to understand its sailing capability. I have not seen such aggressive asymmetry in hulls previously. The Texel rating of 94 indicates a very high performance cat. The jpegs and article give an idea.

Folks you have always wanted a trailable catamaran (8.25 foot wide on the trailer) with full headroom bridge deck cabin and a sailing beam of 11.5 foot. All of this in a 26 foot cat. Yes, it’s real, it will be a full production catamaran. The advertising says “Imagine you could have an apartment anywhere in the world enjoying breath-taking views of marinas, bays, harbours, canals or lakes.” The Nutshell 26 is being produced in South Africa by Future Composites, designed by Southwell Yacht Design and is 26 x 11.5 foot when expanded which can be reduced to 8.25 foot with a bit of effort. The boat can be put into a 40 foot container for global transport. The weight of the cat is 5,150 lbs, displacement is unknown. The 33 foot aluminium mast aft rig has a 270 square foot roller furling jib. There is an optional Code 0 roller furler of 300 square foot. The hull length to beam is 11.3 to 1 with an underwing clearance of 2 foot. The draft over the low aspect ratio keels is 2.5 foot. The outboard power is two 9.9 hp or two 6 KW electric drives with 2 to 6 Lithium LifeP04 batteries. The electric at speed is 5 knots with a 35 mile range. The outboards provide higher speed and longer range. The accommodation is good and flexible. There is a forward solid cabin containing a large double berth, a steering position with a semi sealed toilet and separate semi sealed shower compartments. Why “semi sealed” because it requires a curtain on the outside to provide privacy for each function. Aft of the solid cabin is the cockpit that contains a moveable dinette and galley (to allow the folding of the hulls). This cockpit has a solid roof and “canvas” sides to form an enclosed space. In short a tent with all the advantages and down sides. I am starting to understand the comment about “marinas, bays, harbours, canals or lakes”. I would not take this cat offshore unless everything was bolted down and more realistic cockpit/accommodation protection was available. The structure is foam fiberglass. Future Composites know how to build a good boat. The rig is easy to use but depends on a structurally strong cockpit roof which acts as a second support point for the mast. This design requires some very good thinking to be stiff enough for sailing at full beam yet still hold together while be trailed in a compressed form. The numbers indicate the performance of this cat will be adequate. It will sail upwind at slow VMG’s but its best performance will be on a reach. We are talking peaks of 10 to 12 knots. This is an accommodation cat first and sailing cat second compared to the other cats featured in this thread. If getting onto water under sail with some real comfort is your priority this cat is very good. The jpegs give the idea. The first hulls were produced in December 2021.

The 5th edition of the International exhibition of yachts and boats –  Moscow Boat Show , held from March 20 to 25, 2012 will be hosted by the first pavilion of Crocus Expo International Exhibition Centre. This popular show is dedicated not only to the specialists of the market segment and professional sportsmen but also to those who consider sailing sport to be their hobby and well cherished dream.

Moscow Boat Show

The project is the result of joint efforts of the Crocus Expo International Exhibition Centre and the National Marine Industry Association. The event is supported by Aston Martin Moscow, Burevestnik Group logistics department and the Yachting specialized magazine. Moscow Boat Show is the largest project in Russia presenting all the best in the world of yachting.

The exhibition annually shows high level of attendance and has already proved as significant and noteworthy event in the world of yachts and boats. Every year new exhibitors join the list of participants, genuine “sharks” of yachting business, the quantity of visitors considerably increases and the exposition becomes more sated and diverse.

The best companies professionally involved into yachting and small navigation business – 180 exhibitors from 17 regions of the Russian Federation and 15 countries traditionally presented the best and the newest in the world of yachting at 2011 edition: from design and facilitation of vessels and up to cruising and training courses for beginning skippers. In 2011 the overall exhibit space comprised 18 000 sq m. More than 25 000 visitors came to the show.

This year the exposition space will increase up to 30 000 sq m and will be accommodated in 4 exhibition halls. The scale of the project confirms confident positions of its positive development. The organizers will try to arrange a genuine fiesta of water on land!

Quite a number of foreign exhibitors will participate in the show. Foreign companies show increasing interest to yachting business in Russia.

Moscow Boat Show provides the perfect platform from which to preview new products, evaluate market trends, and establish long-lasting and commercially profitable partnerships. Despite the dynamic changes taking place in Russia and the rapid growth of the yachting sector, the show continues to complement and reflect the industry’s demand and is a promotional opportunity not to be missed!

As its popularity and success rate has grown over the last years Moscow Boat Show 2012 has developed to incorporate more than just an exhibition. These special events serve to attract leading exhibitors and visitors and allow all participants the chance to broaden their knowledge and of course their sales potential.

Moscow Boat Show helps representatives of yachting business to get acquainted with their Russian colleagues and gradually improves national yachting market to a new level. It is obvious that for 4 years of its running the project has turned to a status event of the international exhibitions calendar. The organizers of the exhibition aim to bring together on the same platform all key national and worldwide players and to offer an excellent platform to encourage networking among specialists and visitors in order to accelerate the development in this field as well as implementing new technologies, the newest equipment, materials and components.
