THE LUXURY MARINA OF MARBELLA

Puerto banús .

Puerto Banús is a beacon of luxury tucked away in the lively Costa del Sol. It is more than just a marina; it’s a way of life and the home to many upscale boutiques, fine dining options, and a buzzing nightlife. The history of Puerto Banús

Puerto Banús was designed and built in the 1970s. The whole area, including the marina and the nearby residential zone called 'Nueva Andalucía', was all part of José Banús's grand plan.

José Banús, who was born in Masó (Taragona) in 1906, dropped out of school at 14 to join his dad in the construction business. They moved to Madrid and started a company that took off after landing a big project – building a road to Valle de los Caidos. From there, his career skyrocketed, leading him to develop several big housing projects in Madrid.

In the late 1950s, José Banús bought some land between the Guadaliza and Verde rivers (in Marbella), originally saying he wanted to raise cattle there. But when a new law in 1963 made tourism development a big deal, he saw a golden opportunity. By 1964, his vision for turning the land into a tourist hotspot was set in motion. He got architect Antonio Lamela on board to draft up the first plans for what would become the first marina on the Costa del Sol, and importantly, the first to be funded with private money. Construction started in 1965 and was finished up by 1968.

Today, Puerto Banús has turned into one of the biggest entertainment hubs in the Costa del Sol, drawing in around 5 million visitors a year. It's a favorite hangout for international celebrities, too. Designed to mirror a coastal village in the Mediterranean style, Puerto Banús is the place to be for luxury shopping malls, fine dining, and its buzzing nightlife.

Heading to Puerto Banús from Marbella? You've got four easy options:

Bus: Catch a bus and you'll be there in about 14 minutes, with tickets ranging from €1 to €3. Keep in mind that you can only pay in cash in Spanish local busses at the moment.

Taxi: If you prefer a more private ride, a taxi will get you to Puerto Banús in roughly 10 minutes, but it'll cost between €14 and €18. It's a bit pricier, but faster.

Walking: Feeling adventurous? It’s a 1 hour and 30-minute walk along the promenade from Marbella centro to Puerto Banús. It's free and a great way to soak up the sights.

Ferry : You can take the ferry from Marbella Deportivo straight to Puerto Banús for about €10.

Coming from Málaga? Here are your three main travel options:

Local bus: First, take a bus to Marbella, then hop on another bus to Puerto Banús. The whole trip takes about 1 hour and 50 minutes. It's a bit of a roundabout way, but it lets you see more of the area.

Taxi: A taxi from Málaga to Puerto Banús takes about 50 minutes and costs between €75 and €95. It's the quickest but also the most expensive option.

Driving: Got a car? It's a 50-minute drive. There are plenty of (underground) parking spaces in Puerto Banús, but keep in mind that they are relatively pricy for Spanish terms.

Introducing E1

E1 marks a pivotal shift in both traditional regattas and global racing sports. Founded by Alejandro Agag, an electric motorsport pioneer, and Rodi Basso, an Italian engineer who has collaborated with NASA, Ferrari and Red Bull Racing, E1 will make its mark at several iconic locations throughout the year, such as Jeddah, Venice, Geneva, Monaco, Rotterdam and Hong Kong, alongside Puerto Banús.

Comprising up to 10 teams, the revolutionary RaceBird boat, crafted by the visionary Sophi Horne of Seabird Technologies, is central to the competition. With the ability to soar at speeds of up to 50 knots, RaceBird boats are equipped with electric propulsion systems and foiling technology, ensuring high performance with minimal environmental impact. Spectators from across the globe are expected to line the shores as each team battles it out to secure the prestigious E1 title of Champions Of the Water.

"The individuals and celebrities brought together by E1, along with their team members, collectively reach over 1.1 billion followers across various social media platforms worldwide," explained Juan Núñez Insausti, CEO of Puerto Banús. Strategically positioned to welcome yachts entering the Mediterranean for the summer season, on 2 June 2024 Puerto Banús became the place to be as it hosted the E1 championship, with an estimated 20,000 visitors in the Costa del Sol over the weekend. • Saudi Royal yacht moored in Puerto Banús for family summer holidays

ONCE again, the Saudi Royal family has docked in Marbella for its summer holidays, and other tourists and residents have been able to admire the enormous, luxury Lady Haya in the marina.

The ruling family in the Middle Eastern country regularly chooses Marbella and other parts of the Andalucía coast for its annual getaway, so it is not unusual to see one of their impressive giant yachts moored off the shores of southern Spain, especially the Costa del Sol .

This time, their 65-metre-long steel craft, built in 1981 by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and created by Terence Disdale Design, Chester Jones and Mitsubishi HI, is anchored close to the Benabolá pier in Puerto Banús .

According to CharterWorld, which hires out luxury yachts all over the globe, the Lady Haya has space for 16 guests in addition to the Saudi Arabian Royal family, and 21 crew members.

It originally belonged to the late King Fahd, and back in 1981 was at the cutting edge of technology, with two Daihatsu diesel motors with propulsion units that enable it to reach speeds of 18 knots or, when at a cruising speed of 16 knots, can sail for 6,400 nautical miles (11,853 kilometres or 7,365 'land' miles – about three-quarters of the way from pole to pole) before needing refuelling.
