aussiestewardess – where are we

Our Promise

By putting your trust in Quay Crew, you can trust us to:

  • Be honest and transparent – if you’re not suited to the role or the culture of the yacht, we’ll tell you; and if the yacht isn’t offering a competitive salary or package, we’ll consult with them too.
  • Give career advice – on the roles you’re currently suitable for, how you can improve your CV and what secondary skills could make you stand out.
  • Never send your CV on-spec – we’ll always speak 1-2-1 with a candidate before putting them forward for a role and follow up with verbal references from past yachts and employers.
  • Communicate – at every stage of the process, whether it’s good or bad news.

Testimonials.

“I think the reason that Quay Crew is (in my opinion and most of my colleagues’ opinions too) the industry’s leading agent is down to the culture of integrity, honesty and real care that permeates your company, and the careful selection of a candidate that will stay in the job. Long may it continue. I will never hesitate to use, recommend or assist Quay Crew for as long as I’m in yachting, and after.”

Chief Officer – 70m Yacht

“Having moved into the yachting industry from the commercial sector, Sam gave me valuable feedback on my CV and routes into the industry. I can highly recommend Sam to anyone looking for their next engineering position as she does her best to make sure that the yacht is right for you.”

2nd Engineer – 52m Yacht

“Having been in contact with Caroline since the summer, I felt the whole way through my search application process that she was completely on my side and has supported me and given me the confidence to propel my career to the next level.”

Chief Stew – 60m Yacht

“I would just like to take this opportunity to express how amazing Max has been in finding myself and my partner a position on a brand-new build. Max has been such a rock star in not just finding me one job but two jobs, which I am absolutely grateful for. It’s really nice to have a crew agency like Quay Crew who are reliable, trustworthy as well as always wanting to consider your best interests. The team at Quay Crew are absolutely exceptional and I will always recommend only the best for them. ”

Captain – 30m+ Yacht

“The best crew agent I have ever dealt with…always on the ball, super efficient, attentive and always available. There are so many agencies that only care about the yachts because they are the ones paying and completely ignore the crew so I want to thank you for all your help. ”

Head of Service – 100m Yacht

“I really appreciate the communication and commitment from Quay Crew and would like to mention that Tom has been incredible throughout the process. He had a vast amount of information relating to the role and yacht and knew exactly what would suit me. I highly recommend Quay Crew.”

Bosun – 60m+ Yacht

“Quay Crew was the most professional of the agencies I was using in my search. I had constant communication throughout and the whole process was personal. I’m very happy with the placement and would recommend Glen and the team to anyone. ”

2nd Officer – 65m Yacht

“What sets the team apart more than anyone else is the open and honest dialogue as well as the feeling that we’re working towards the same goal. Rather than just being another number or CV on someone’s desk, I established an amazing rapport with Glen so that he was able to really know what my goals were and where I wanted to take my career…and he was absolutely instrumental in seeing that I achieved that by placing me on my current vessel. At some point in the future, I plan to be on the opposite side of the interview process and Quay Crew will be the first agency that I reach out to.”

2nd Officer – 80m Yacht

“I wanted to say how fantastic Tom has been in finding a job for me. From first talking to him on the phone, he gave some fantastic advice about the industry and made the whole process feel calm and easy. His communication was absolutely exemplary and he went above and beyond to secure me a job. I would highly recommend Quay Crew to anyone.”

Deckhand – 90m Yacht

“I recently completed a 4 week trip through Quay crew on a yacht that Phil placed me on. I had applied for the role through other agencies but they refused [to put me forward] and Phil was the only recruiter that I spoke to who also saw flexibility in the job requirements. It’s a pleasure dealing with a recruiter that actually understands the role and the candidates suited for it. I hope to work with Phil and the Quay crew team again in the future.”

Layoffs in 2024: A List of Companies Cutting Jobs This Year

C ompanies are cutting staff and focusing on efficiency amid a commitment to do more with less following a year of widespread layoffs.

Cisco Systems and Deere & Co. announced layoffs this week, joining Tesla, Alphabet and Amazon among major companies to cut jobs in recent months. The layoffs this year suggest that companies are cutting in more targeted areas—even as some of the biggest tech companies have continued to grow, adding more jobs than they’ve cut.

Job growth slowed sharply in July and the unemployment rate rose to 4.3%—its highest level since 2021, the Labor Department reported earlier this month. U.S. employers added 114,000 jobs in July, missing expectations.

Here’s a look at some of the companies that have announced layoffs so far this year.

Cisco Systems

The company plans to cut its workforce by 7%, or about 6,000 employees, citing a need to lower costs and invest in growth areas.

The company said it laid off workers amid challenging conditions in global agriculture and construction. The world’s largest seller of farm equipment didn’t specify how many workers it let go.

The chipmaker said it would lay off 15,000 employees this year and pause dividend payments as part of a cost-cutting effort.

The maker of tax preparation software said it would lay off about 1,800 employees, or 10% of its workforce, and shutter two of its North America worksites.

Kenvue, the Johnson & Johnson spinoff that makes Tylenol and Benadryl, said it would reduce its workforce by about 4%. The company had about 22,000 employees as of the end of last year, according to its annual report.

Peloton Interactive

The company said it is reducing its global workforce by 15%, or about 400 employees. The struggling maker of fitness equipment also announced the departure of CEO Barry McCarthy.

The e-commerce giant is slashing hundreds of jobs from its cloud-computing business, in its latest round of job cuts this year. Amazon in January said it would eliminate hundreds of jobs across its film and television studio and Twitch streaming platform.

The company said it would cut more than 10% of its global workforce amid dimming growth prospects and a slowdown in electric-vehicle sales.

The iPhone maker said it would lay off more than 600 workers, according to state records in California, in its first major job cuts since the pandemic.

The Swedish telecommunications-equipment company said it plans to cut 1,200 jobs in the country. Ericsson had around 99,950 global employees at the end of 2023, of which just under 14,000 are in Sweden.

The Chrysler-parent will cut about 400 employees in the U.S., mostly in the automaker’s software and engineering units.

The consumer-goods company said it plans to separate its ice-cream division into a stand-alone business, and about 7,500 jobs would be affected as part of a restructuring program.

The networking-equipment company plans to cut about 5% of its workforce as part of a restructuring. Cisco had about 84,900 employees as of July, according to a filing.

The e-signature company said it would lay off about 6% of its workforce, mostly from its sales and marketing teams.

Estée Lauder

The cosmetics company said it would cut up to 3,100 positions, or about 5% of its workers, following several weak quarters.

The travel company is cutting roughly 9% of its workforce, or about 1,500 people. At the end of last year, Expedia had approximately 17,000 employees.

The electric-vehicle startup issued a going-concern warning and said it would lay off 15% of its staff.

The grocery-delivery company is cutting about 250 employees, roughly 7% of its staff, as it focuses on profitability. It said its chief technology officer and chief operating officer will leave the company for personal reasons.

Morgan Stanley

The bank plans to cut hundreds of jobs in its wealth-management division, according to people familiar with the matter. The layoffs are expected to hit less than 1% of the wealth unit’s employees, which number less than 40,000. The company ended 2023 with about 80,000 total employees.

The sneaker company said it would reduce its workforce by about 2%, or more than 1,600 people, in a bid to cut costs. The cuts aren’t expected to affect employees in stores and distribution centers or those on its innovation team.

The identification-software company is laying off 400 employees, or about 7% of its workforce, in its latest round of job cuts.

Paramount Global

The parent of CBS and Paramount Hollywood studio said it would lay off 800 people, or roughly 3% of Paramount’s workforce, according to a person familiar with the matter. The layoffs follow CBS earning record ratings for the Super Bowl.

In the Snapchat parent’s latest round of job cuts, the social-media company is reducing its workforce by about 10% to trim costs amid a soft advertising market.

The company will lay off about 900 employees from its PlayStation unit. The cuts represent about 8% of the unit’s staff and will include the closing of PlayStation’s London studio.

Warner Music

Warner Music Group said it would cut 600 employees, or around 10% of its workforce. Chief Executive Robert Kyncl said in a note to employees that the changes would result in $200 million in annual cost savings, which would mostly be used to support the company’s core business.

The videoconferencing company said it would cut about 2% of its workforce. The layoffs come about a year after the company reduced its staff by 15%.

Google laid off hundreds of employees in January in divisions including hardware and internal software tools, as the search giant continues to reverse its pandemic hiring spree. The company later in January said there were more layoffs to come but didn’t specify how many employees would be cut or which teams would be affected.

The world’s largest asset manager said it would layoff 600 employees, or around 3% of its total workforce. The company laid off about 3% in January 2023 as well.

The bank said it would eliminate 20,000 jobs by the end of 2026 as part of a multiyear restructuring plan.

The free messaging platform popular with videogamers said it is cutting 17% of its staff.

The language-learning software company cut 10% of its contractors and said it would use artificial intelligence to handle some content creation.

The online marketplace said it would lay off about 1,000 employees, or 9% of its full-time workforce, as part of efforts to boost performance at a time of what it called rising competition and softer consumer spending.

The smart vacuum company said it would cut 350 jobs, or 31% of its workforce, following the termination of its merger agreement with Amazon.

The retailer said it is eliminating 2,350 store and corporate positions, or 3.5% of its overall workforce excluding seasonal hires, to trim costs.

The tech company is cutting 1,900 employees, or about 8% of its videogame staff, after last year’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard. The layoffs affect less than 1% of Microsoft’s total workforce.

The digital payments company plans to trim 9% of its workforce this year. Last year, it said it would lay off 2,000 employees, or a 7% cut.

Rent the Runway

The fashion subscription company said it is cutting 37 roles, or about 10% of its staff.

The cloud-based software company is laying off around 700 employees, or 1% of its workforce, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Sports Illustrated

The legacy sports publication announced major layoffs, according to its union, sparking turmoil at the magazine. The announcement came after Sports Illustrated’s publisher said it failed to make a payment to its licenser and lost its license to publish the magazine.

United Parcel Service

The package-delivery giant plans to cut about 12,000 jobs this year amid a slowdown in its delivery business. The cuts will result in $1 billion in savings, UPS said.

Unity Software

The videogame company said it would lay off 1,800 employees, or about 25% of its workforce, following cuts by other game companies over the past year.

Universal Music Group

The music company plans to lay off around 100 to 300 employees globally this year, according to a person familiar with the matter.

How did Raygun qualify for the Olympics? Is she really the best Australia has to offer?

Since Australian breaker Rachael "Raygun" Gunn failed to score a single point in any of her Olympic bouts, many have asked how she qualified for the Games.

Fellow breaker and anthropologist Lucas Marie says she won her qualification "fair and square" last year, but African American man Malik Dixon has criticised the Olympic body for letting her in.

What's next?

Breaking will not be an event at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games — a decision made before Raygun's performance.

The 2024 Paris Olympics marked breaking's debut as a sport at the global event, with 36-year-old lecturer and breaker Rachael "Raygun" Gunn representing Australia for the first time.

Having failed to win a single point in any of her Olympic bouts, Raygun quickly became a viral sensation.

The question on many people's minds now is: How did she even qualify?

Lucas Marie is a breaker who has competed, performed, taught and judged breaking competitions over the past 25 years. He's also an anthropologist who recently co-authored an article with Gunn.

He says the answer to that question is simple.

"There was an Oceania qualifier in which any B-boy or B-girl from Australia [or] New Zealand could enter, and that was in Sydney in October 2023," he told ABC News.

"And leading up to that, there were a lot of other events in which breakers were competing.

"She won those battles fair and square and won the qualification in Sydney.

"And it wasn't really a surprise to anyone.

"She's been fairly consistent, winning or coming second or third at a lot of breaking events in Australia for the last five to 10 years."

Marie said there was nothing out of the ordinary about Raygun's performance.

"It's not like gymnastics where there's this kind of agreed-upon standard," he said.

"It's always had a rawness to it. It's always had an improvisational kind of quality. And I think looking different and trying different stuff has always been celebrated.

"And I think Raygun, in a way, was just expressing a core kind of hip hop trait in a way a lot of breakers do."

He described her efforts as bold.

"I thought — and this is how I judge a lot of breaking events — I thought, 'Oh, she's making some really interesting choices to mimic Australian animals.' And you can kind of see the choices that she's making in the moment."

Is she the best Australia has to offer?

Team Australia chef de mission Anna Meares insisted after Raygun's performance that she was the best breaker the country had to offer. But is this true?

"It's sometimes just who's performing better on the day," Marie said.

"And at the qualification event in which she won, and other events in which she's won, she performed better on that day and won the ticket.

"That doesn't mean she's the best. It doesn't really work like that.

"I think she's a great breaker. She won the qualification. She's won other events in the past, and she was a good representative for Australia at that competition."

Asked whether there were B-girls in Perth, regional Victoria or rural Brisbane who might have qualified but could not afford to travel to Sydney for the tryouts, Marie agreed this was possible.

"Of course, there's breakers all over the country that maybe should have been in that event, but they weren't."

Breaking will not carry over to the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, a decision made before Raygun's battle.

Marie described this as sad.

"Maybe, based on the ratings, they'll reassess that and maybe allocate some medals to breaking," he said.

"I really hope that's the case, and I hope that for other breakers who want to compete in it as a dance sport."

Marie said that at the end of the day people should remember they were dealing with a human.

"As a friend of Rachael's, there's a human being who's getting a lot of negative attention," he said.

"I think people kind of miss that sometimes and forget the human aspect of all this."

'Toying with the culture'

Malik Dixon is an African American who has been living in Australia for more than a decade and is a Sydney University graduate.

He said Raygun made a total "mockery" out of breaking at the Olympics.

"She was dressed like a member of the cricket team or an Australian PE teacher, and from that point it just seemed like satire," Mr Dixon told ABC News.

"It just looked like somebody who was toying with the culture and didn't know how culturally significant it was being the first time in the Olympics and just how important it was to people who really cherish hip hop and one of the elements of hip hop, which is breakdancing.

"It made me think, was Borat her breakdancing coach?"

Mr Dixon said too many people felt entitled to African American culture.

"The African American space has been one where we've shared our community so much and without any restraints, any barriers, roadblocks, obstacles, any gatekeepers, that essentially what should have been African American cultural capital is just shared, which is cool," he said.

"We like to share, right?

"We shared 400 years of free labour.

"To see Rachael in her attempt to be a part of the culture just be grossly underwhelming made it seem like she didn't take it seriously."

Olympics body criticised for Raygun qualification

Mr Dixon criticised the body that qualified Raygun, saying she devalued breaking with her performance.

"Whatever governing body nominated her as Australia's entrant into the Olympics either did not understand the assignment or didn't really believe in the integrity or significance of breakdancing, because if they did they would just say, rather than disrespect the culture, we're just not ready to send an applicant this year."

He said Raygun was extremely audacious and not self-aware.

"You've got to know your role, know your position, know your limitation," he said.

"And I think that part of privilege is saying that there are no limits to what I can do.

"Part of privilege is having the authority to say that there are no limits and there are no requirements, there are no prerequisites to what I can do."

Raygun's degrees do not hold much water with Mr Dixon.

"Due to consumerism, this Foundational Black American product, which is hip hop, is global," he said.

"And even people who have no connection to any African Americans or any local or regional things that come out in these songs, they have become a part of the whole experience now.

"If I came in and said that I was an authority on Greek music and I was going against the grain of what the mainstream Greek musicians thought, or the school of thought, and I've said that I was the authority, people would check me on that.

"If I had a PhD in sprinting, does that qualify me to go against Noah Lyles? No, it doesn't."

He also doubts Raygun was the best breaker Australia had to offer.

"[There's] got to be somebody out here that's better than that! The kangaroo! The sprinkler! She did the sprinkler out there, man!" he said.

Should everybody just lighten up?

Should we lighten up? Mr Dixon does not believe so.

"Larrikinism is used as a get-out-of-jail-free card and to escape responsibility of how words or actions impact a hurt person," he said.

"But when the majority culture is offended, there's no playing around.

"This is a part of my culture, and I don't think Australians are in a place to tell me how I should feel about breakdancing being mocked on an international stage.

"People who don't have any or limited access to black people or hip hop culture now may see Rachael and her buffoonery as a representation of hip hop and black culture.

"People who were already side-eyeing breakdancing as an Olympic sport, Rachael Gunn has put the nail in that coffin.

"This might be the most viral clip of the whole Olympics. From a comedy standpoint, she's got it, but from an Olympics perspective, its regressive."
