There are a lot of watchmaking complications out there that aren’t particularly useful for the “mass market” – moonphase complications in particular, but also others. A yachting timer (like the Rolex Yacht-Master II ) for example, is designed to aid in the countdown to the start of a regatta (a yacht or boat race). Oh, I’m sorry. You don’t spend your weekends competing in regattas? That’s ok though, as its function also has other applications in the real world (but more on that later).
When competing in a regatta, getting off of the starting line is a bit of a convoluted process. Powered by wind, there is no “mashing the throttle” from a standstill to get things moving. Thus, a running start of sorts needs to be undertaken, which means a countdown takes place as boats jockey for position in relation to the starting line.
Typically a 5-minute interval (with some variance), the yachting timer complication – also called a regatta timer – was created specifically for timing these countdowns. A sound is typically triggered to announce the starting of this countdown, giving competitors warning to start their timers and prepare to launch out of the starting gates. If you want to dig deeper into that, Cruising World has a great “Racing 101” feature, but you probably get the fundamentals by now at the very least.
Sure, a small percentage of us might get out on a sailboat from time to time. Of that contingent, a few might actually even compete here and there. The thing is, you really don’t need to be out on the water to make use of a yachting timer. Just think for a second about all of the little tasks in your daily lives that could benefit from a short-run countdown timer. Steaks on the BBQ, your child’s time-out, that chat with a work colleague that always feels like it goes on forever (“oh, sorry Susan, I’ve really gotta run”), short intervals of billable time in the office, time remaining in a presentation; if you think about it long enough, you’ll certainly come up with a few more too. You might not need/use it every day, but at the very least, it makes for an interesting alternative to the conventional chronograph.
Over the years, a number of brands (other than Rolex) have gotten into the category, especially during the ‘70s. Heuer’s catalog included both the Skipper and later the Heuer Regatta. The former used a 15-minute chronograph sub-dial, with each 5-minute increment/slice being painted a different color – a method both simple and effective.
The Heuer Regatta on the other hand is slightly different. 5 circular cut-outs on the dial change color minute by minute as they count down. Rather than a conventional chronograph setup, the Regatta is more like an Omega Chronostop in the sense that the timer is always running, yet you can instantaneously reset your 5-minute interval on the fly by using its pusher at 2 o’clock.
Beyond these two noteworthy pieces, there were also a number of pretty obscure offerings from Lemania, Aquastar, Memosail, and others, but of course, the big modern entry to the category comes from Rolex, and she’s a complicated thing to say the least. The Rolex Yacht-Master II is hands-down the most interesting, complex, and cleverly engineered yachting timer on the market thus far. Powered by the Rolex Caliber 4161 movement, and good for a power reserve of 3 days, its countdown timer is actually programmable in intervals between 1 and 10 minutes. Confused? Here’s how it works.
First, unscrew the crown (without pulling it out), and rotate its external Ring Command bezel counter-clockwise till you reach an end stop. This is the “programming position.” From here, using the reset pusher at four o’clock allows you to move the oversized countdown timer hand between the 1 and 10 indices on the inner timing track of its bezel. Next, you simply reposition the bezel and screw its crown back down, and from this point onwards resetting the timer on the Yacht-Master II will reset it to the preset interval. At this point, whether you want to time the five-minute countdown to the start of a regatta, or the two minutes per side you want to grill that thick-cut steak for, you’re all set.

A Great Watch. the bezel has scratched over 5 years. but I love the chronograph style. I do travel and love the 24 hr time zones.
too heavy a wrist watch to be worn daily, it tires. scratches the bezel very easily.

Slava movements for sure (at least all the ones I have seen are powered by a 2427), no idea who built/cased them though. There are a lot of companies out there selling Slava powered watches (Spetsnaz, Poljot International, Basilika, etc), not sure if it is related to any of them or if it is its own venture.
Thank you for the pictures. I feel more confident the watch will be of good quality when it arrives. And will post pictures and review next week Which watch today Churchy?
Thanks for sharing, David, looks like you got a good deal there! How's the lume?
Just the sword hands, but quite bright and lasts well. Which watch today Churchy?
One of the perks of being a celebrity surely must be gaining access to the hottest new wrist candy. We spotted three watches that were only released this year on the wrists of stars this week, with Mark Wahlberg rocking the fresh denim-strapped Patek Philippe World Time Date, Simu Liu sporting the new malachite-clad Jacob & Co. Palatial Classic, and Lucien Laviscount flexing the latest Audemars Piguet [Re]Master .
Other celebs wore older but certainly not obsolete timepieces on the red carpet. Nick Jonas was spotted in the coveted Rolex Yacht-Master “Popeye,” Paul Feig showed off a classic Rolex Daytona , Sam Asghari donned the iconic Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Duoface , and Archie Renaux flaunted the Hublot Classic Fusion Black Magic .

The Jacob & Co. timepiece that Simu Liu wore to the Los Angeles premiere of Jackpot was rocking—literally. The sizable 42 mm beauty is one of the three new Palatial Big Date models the Swiss watchmaker unveiled in March. Available in either stainless steel or rose gold, the trio showcases striking
made from blue Lapis Lazuli, green Malachite, and black Onyx, respectively. Each piece of stone features a unique pattern, so no two Palatial faces will be alike. Liu’s example has a malachite face with striking veins in green and black, a large date with a double disc at 12 o’clock, and a power reserve indicator at six o’clock. The price of each individually numbered piece is available upon request.
Lucien Laviscount wore a très chic Audemars Piguet during the premiere of the new season of Emily in Paris on Wednesday. Released in May, the [RE]Master02 is a modern reimaging of the asymmetrical models AP produced in scant quantities in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Crafted from Audemars Piguet’s proprietary sand gold, the angular 41 mm case shifts between white and pink hues while the caseback gives a clear view of the trusted time-only only Caliber 7129. The distinctive blue dial showcases a unique parallel brush finish and 12 gold-lined segments that allow you to help time telling without any markers. Limited to 250 pieces, the watch retails for $47,200.
The playful Rolex Nick Jonas wore to the Los Angeles premiere of The Good Half on Tuesday will likely appeal to cartoon lovers and watch buffs alike. Created as part of a collab between Bamford Watch Department and Dr. Romanelli in 2015, the limited edition features none other than Popeye on the dial. The sailor’s arms function as hands and point to the time, though the rest of the yacht functions as usual. The 40 mm case and bracelet have been finished in a military-grade titanium coating, creating a monochromatic that further accentuates the colorful character. Only 29 pieces priced at £20,500 (about $26,400) were released worldwide, rendering the Rolex Yachtmaster “Popeye” rather rare.
Mark Wahlberg has once again proved he is one of the country’s most clued-in and well-connected collectors. The American actor showed off a newly released Patek Philippe World Time Date during the Los Angeles premiere of The Union on Monday. Unveiled for the second time at Watches & Wonders in April, the timepiece (Ref. 5330G) features a 40 mm white-gold case, a blue-gray opaline dial with a distinctive carbon pattern, and a funky denim-clad leather strap. Powered by the self-winding caliber 240 HU, the world timer offers 24-hour and a.m./p.m. indication for all 24 time zones. It retails for $76,594.
Iranian-American actor Sam Asghari sported a winning Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Duoface during the L.A. premiere of Jackpot on Tuesday. JLC released the first Reverso in 1931, before following up with the Duoface in 1994. The successor had all the Art Deco elegance of the 1930s original but was fitted with a second dial instead of the Reverso’s solid metal caseback. Priced at $25,000, this contemporary iteration (Ref. Q3842520) features a 28.3 mm steel case, a silver guilloché dial with black numerals, and a black guilloché dial with silver markers. The faces show two time zones and a small seconds display. A winning watch, indeed.
Archie Renaux is starring in a dark and scary sci-fi. It is rather fitting, then, that the English actor wore a menacing, all-black Hublot Classic Fusion Black Magic to the Alien: Romulus premiere in L.A. on Monday. Released in 2019, the Classic Fusion Black Magic features a black ceramic case—it comes in four different sizes, but the Brit’s looks like the largest—a matching ceramic bezel, a matte black dial with silver-toned hands, and a black rubber strap. The monochromatic piece costs $9,800 a pop. You can also add a ceramic bracelet for a little extra dosh.
Paul Feig, famous for directing films like Bridesmaids and The Heat , wore the Rolex equivalent of a blockbuster at the L.A. premiere of Jackpot on Tuesday. The Cosmograph Daytona in question could either be the Ref. 126500LN the Crown released in 2023 to celebrate the model’s 60th anniversary or the Ref. 116500LN that the Swiss watchmaker debuted in 2016. It is impossible to say which reference it is without the help of calipers. Both feature 40 mm Oystersteel cases, black Cerachrom bezels, white dials, three chronograph counters, and Oyster bracelets, but the Ref. 126500LN has the new Caliber 4131 movement and refined aesthetic details. The latter retails for $15,100.

Time to drive it like you stole it for the America’s Cup teams as confidence – in everything from boat handling to decision making – becomes key
The America’s Cup is as much a confidence game as it is one of design, technology and boat handling. Whether you’re a Challenger or Defender, asserting your authority wherever you can is all part of gaining the upper hand. On my most recent visit to Barcelona I was delivered a showcase display of just that.
The whistle of the foils came first, followed a split second later by Alinghi Red Bull Racing under full sail and at full noise as the Swiss scorched through the canal-type entrance, leaving the French base to port before spinning into the breeze in the modest sized basin. Stopping with a flamboyant handbrake turn, their chase boat locked into position as the sails came down.
It was a spectacular display of the size, power and speed of an AC75 , but also an illustration of just how confident this team is in its boat handling aboard its priceless carbon machine. Trip up and the unforgiving concrete walls mean you’ll need a roll of bin liners rather than a RIB to get the boat back to the dock.
My viewpoint from the Orient Express Racing Team’s low budget base is close to the harbour entrance and while the French are away from the main Barcelona bustle, theirs is a prime spot for watching the comings and goings of their competitors. Indeed, when it comes to VIP sponsor activation, you could argue that this is the place to be.
Article continues below…
The pursuit of the America’s Cup, the pinnacle of competitive sailing, has long been a storied journey for Britain. With…
The 37th America’s Cup in Barcelona this autumn is getting ever closer, something marked by all teams launching the boat…
I’d been attending the christening of Orient Express Racing Team’s AC75, the last of the Challenger boats to splash. And while the French were the latest to confirm their entry to the 37th America’s Cup and the smallest of all the teams with arguably the least experienced Cup crew, they have one big advantage: their boat was designed by the Defenders.
As their black and gold AC75 slipped through the canvas base doors and into daylight, pulses of dry ice pumped out from the yacht’s cradle as if a steam engine was pulling her into the open. Aside from the stirring music, the christening was a modest affair, finished off with a predictably superb canapé lunch.
Keeping things simple and efficient is the French approach to this Cup, at least as much as it can be when dealing with the most technically complex America’s Cup to date. Buying the Kiwi design not only saved them time and money (while expensive, it was a cheaper option than a fully blown design team). It also meant the key design decisions – which needed to be made 18 months ago – were made by the current Cup holders, who know a thing or two about the AC75 concept.
The French have taken a gamble in waiting for what they call design 3.0, the latest Kiwi package. This cost them time on the water but gave them the latest technology, from top to bottom. All they have to do now is sail it like the Kiwis. And therein lies their next challenge.
Emirates Team New Zealand training on an AC75 with cyclors now returned to Cup sailing . Photo: Job Vermeulen / America’s Cup
According to CEOs Bruno Dubois and Stephan Kandler, the target is to get to understand 90% of the package they have bought. “This is our goal, if we reach this we’ll be dangerous on the race course,” Dubois told me. “Whether we need to refine any details or add a foil tweak here and there is not for us now.”
Keeping things focussed is something the Kiwis have been very good at and it is this approach that the French identify with. Kandler and Dubois have modelled large areas of their team on the Kiwi example; a simple base, don’t reinvent the wheel, and be careful where you spend the money.
“We don’t have the time, money or people to waste, we have to be efficient.”
So, now we have seen all six of the new America’s Cup boats , talking to various teams suggests there’s no consensus yet on who’s quick and who’s not. What the techies will tell you though, is that according to their analysis the differences in hull shapes count for seconds per race while the variations between foils will be measured in minutes.
Ironically, when it comes to timing I hear that as the Challengers completed their set of five boats, it was the Kiwis who were the most nervous as their AC75 took the slow route by sea from New Zealand to Barcelona. With all that’s going on in the world right now the potential for a shipping delay is significant. Having created their perfect machine, demonstrated that it works and met all their internal deadlines in a long and complex timeline, watching the clock and crossing their fingers is an uncomfortable phase in a Cup where confidence is key.

An overview of sailing regatta watches, frederique constant.
The Frederique Constant SA company is established in Geneva, Switzerland, in its current form in 1988 by the Dutch entrepreneur Peter Constant Stas and his wife Aletta Francoise Frédérique Stas-Bax. The brand is involved in all the stages of watch production, from initial design to final assembly. Their first collection was launched in 1992.
At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, the Olympic Committee changed the countdown system for starting yacht races. With an increase in the number of boat categories over the years, the time for successive starts had become too long. So it was decided to reduce the intervening time gap from 5 – 10 to 3 – 6 minutes. The Frederique Constant Yacht Timer was the first watch to integrate these new racing rules.
Frederique Constant developed their new Yacht Timer quartz movement together with Herbert Derksen of Tack and Gybe International ( TNG ), the former helmsman of the Dutch Olympic team’s Tornado sailboat. It is fitted with a countdown function that can be set at 10, 6, 5 or 3 minutes, shown by the coloured balls as the earlier automatic regatta movements have. Besides the visible going of the countdown it is also audible. Both Frederique Constant and TNG have patented the new movement, you can download the patent here .

The line of different models is divided into two main models. The more stylish ones with a round Ø 37 mm case and the more sportive ones with a unidirectional bezel with compass ring, case Ø 40 mm. The first are officially certified chronometers, and were delivered with a test certificate. You can download a brochure of the Frederique Constant Yacht Timer here .
You can read the users manual of the Frederique Constant Yacht Timer here , and learn how the countdown system works.

In 2019, some 20 years after the launch of the first Yachttimer series, the Frederique Constant Yacht Timer , the brand introduces a new Regatta series: the Frederique Constant Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown . This time the watches are driven by a new developed automatic movement, caliber FC-380.
In the dial between 10 and 2 o’clock the well known 5 dots showing the elapsed minutes during the countdown. The indicator disk is coloured blue – white – orange, or white – blue – orange, depending on the color of the dial (navy blue or silver).

In their 2020 brochure, Frederique Constant shows a new version of the Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown models, a ‘sport-chique’ edition as they call it. With a polished stainless steel case and bracelet (with every watch comes an extra rubber strap), and anthracite grey dial. Reference FC-380GT4H6B.
To match the grey dial, the indicator disk is now coloured grey – white – orange during the countdown.
A year later, the first four models have left from the Frederique Constant catalogue.

More banning from Moscow.
This time it is of 32 experts and employees at British think tanks whom Russia has accused of pushing an anti-Russian line in Western policy circles, Reuters reports.
Individuals on the list of those banned, which has been published on the Russian foreign ministry's website, have also been accused of spreading disinformation designed to discredit Moscow.
You may remember our post from earlier this morning about India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi visiting Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Ukraine later this week.
We now have a little bit more detail on Mr Modi's visit to Kyiv, scheduled for 23 August.
The Ukrainian presidential office said on Telegram the meeting will see the two leaders discussing the countries' relations and multilateral cooperation.
"This is the first visit of the head of the Indian government to our country in the history of bilateral relations", the office added.
Ukraine claims to be making advances after launching a shock invasion into Russia's Kursk border region, in a move which has embarrassed Vladimir Putin's top military brass.
Readers have been sending in their questions to our senior correspondents and military experts for their take on the latest developments.
Today, Jane in Shropshire asks:
What is success for Ukraine in their invasion into Russia?
Our security and defence analyst Michael Clarke says:
This incursion is, by definition, a temporary military manoeuvre, designed to put pressure on Russian strategy and gain some military leverage.
It will end when the coming battle of Kursk has reached a point where Ukrainian forces judge that they can still leave the pocket without being too badly mauled by Russian forces, who will be trying to cut them off from their escape route back into Ukraine.
But that point may be some weeks away.
Success and failure will be an essentially political judgement: did Ukraine's Kursk offensive relieve Russian military pressure elsewhere - particularly in the Donbas around Chasiv Yar, Toretsk, Niu York and Pokrovsk, where Ukrainian forces are under real pressure? Did it increase support for Kyiv in the West? Did it affect the mood around Putin and the confidence in the Kremlin that they would win this war sooner or later?
Those will be the metrics by which this bold initiative will eventually be judged.
Sir Keir Starmer's spokesman says there has been "no change" in the UK's position on Ukraine using Storm Shadow missiles inside Russia's borders.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy wants to use the missiles to attack targets deep inside Russia that could speed up the end of the war.
But Britain, along with other Western governments, have so far rebuffed Kyiv's requests amid fears of escalation.
Asked about Storm Shadow missiles and whether Ukraine is permitted to use them in Kursk as part of its push into Russia, a No 10 spokesman said: "We are providing military aid to support Ukraine's clear right to self-defence."
Asked about discussions between the UK and overseas partners, including the US and France, the spokesperson added: "We also have an ongoing dialogue with our allies about a co-ordinated effort between us all to do the same thing and be united in our support for Ukraine.
"So, more broadly, yes, there are conversations always happening between ourselves."
Civilians in Pokrosvk in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region have just a week or two to flee their homes as Russian troops make rapid gains, a Ukrainian official has said.
A key target city for Moscow, fighting around Pokrovsk remains the heaviest in eastern Ukraine.
Several clashes were reported in the area last week as Kyiv pushed on with its shock invasion of Russia's Kursk border region.
Serhiy Dobriak, the head of Pokrovsk's military administration, said residents should leave as quickly as they can.
They have "a week or two, no more", he told Radio Liberty's Ukrainian Service.
He said authorities have capacity to evacuate at least 1,000 people per day, but only around half that amount is currently leaving.
Some 53,000 people, including nearly 4,000 children, remain in the city.
More than 121,000 people have been evacuated from nine border districts in Kursk, Russian media is reporting, citing the country's emergencies ministry.
Ukrainian troops launched a cross-border invasion into the region nearly two weeks ago, in a move that shocked Vladimir Putin and his top military leaders and left them struggling to push Kyiv's forces back.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy said earlier that he was briefed by his top military commander that Ukraine was achieving its goals in Kursk.
Kyiv predicts Moscow will have around 200,000 extra forces in Ukraine by the end of the year, according to a report.
Forbes Ukraine cited deputy defence minister Ivan Havryliuk as saying some 800,000 Russian troops were expected in the country by the end of 2024.
Currently, there are around 600,000 soldiers in occupied areas of Ukraine, he said.
Analysts at the Royal United Services Institute say Russian forces have been expanding in size despite suffering heavy casualties, and the Kremlin believes it can sustain the "current rate of attrition" through 2025.
An adviser to Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Russians must force Vladimir Putin to enter peace talks on "fair terms" if they don't want to see the war on their doorstep.
Mykhailo Podolyak, adviser to the head of the president's office, claims that Mr Putin's own forces are "destroying civilian infrastructure" in the Kursk border region and "looting shops and civilian homes".
"Accustomed to seeing the war as a television show, Russians are now seeing it up close and personal," he said in a post to X.
"You can no longer turn away, we will not allow it.
"If you don't want to see the war, you have to end the war by forcing your 'leadership' to make peace on fair terms."
A mandatory evacuation order for families with children has begun in the city of Pokrovsk in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region, as Russian forces advance.
Vadym Filashkin, head of the Donetsk regional administration, said a decision was made to "forcibly evacuate children" with their parents or guardians after an emergency meeting on the situation.
"When our cities are within range of virtually any enemy weapon, the decision to evacuate is necessary and inevitable," he said in a post on Telegram.
Meanwhile, Russian media is citing the defence ministry as saying Russian forces have captured the Donetsk town of Zalizne.
Sky News cannot independently verify the claim.
Russian troops have been inching towards the key strategic hub of Pokrovsk for months. Its capture would compromise Kyiv's defensive abilities and supply routes, and would bring Russia closer to its stated aim of capturing the entire Donetsk region.
This was the situation on the ground in the region as of Friday:

In under a week, Ukrainian forces have captured about 1,000 square kilometers in their surprise offensive into Russia, Kyiv's top commander said on Monday.
The amount of territory that Ukraine says it has seized in Russia in a matter of days — roughly 386 square miles — is almost as much as Moscow has captured in Ukraine this year.
Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi briefed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other senior officials on the military incursion into Russia's Kursk region, which began last Tuesday.
Kyiv has been extremely tight-lipped about this particularly ambitious operation , which caught Moscow and many observers of the conflict off guard, but has started to disclose more information publicly.
"As of now, we control about 1,000 square kilometers of the territory of the Russian Federation. The troops are fulfilling their tasks," Syrskyi said in a video call with Ukrainian leadership. "Fighting is ongoing actually along the entire front line," he said, adding that the situation was "under our control."
Business Insider was unable to independently verify the provided figure, but Syrski's assessment suggests that the Ukrainian gains over the past week are nearing the total land area seized in Russian advances since January — which would be an impressive feat for Kyiv given the challenges its armed forces have faced.
According to Mitch Belcher, a geospatial analyst at the Institute for the Study of War, which tracks battlefield movements and developments, Russian forces had occupied about 108,163 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory by December 31. By August 11, this figure had increased to 109,338 square kilometers.
"We assess that Russian forces have occupied an additional 1,175 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory thus far in 2024," he told BI on Monday. That works out to just more than 450 square miles. A key question, though, is whether Ukraine can hold its recent gains.
Ukraine's bold attack on Russia began on August 6, with thousands of soldiers accompanied by armored vehicles pouring across the border into the Kursk region. Kyiv appears to have advanced several miles deep into Russia and now controls dozens of settlements. More than 100,000 civilians have fled the area amid the fighting.
The overall goal of the incursion isn't immediately clear. Conflict analysts have suggested Ukraine may be trying to alleviate some pressure on its forces elsewhere along the sprawling front line, gain leverage for potential territorial negotiations with Russia, or even just humiliate Moscow and boost morale in Kyiv.

"We are grateful to all soldiers and commanders for their steadfastness and decisive actions," Zelenskyy said Monday on the Telegram messaging app.
Some experts have suggested that, at the very least, the Kursk operation has temporarily awarded Ukraine the battlefield initiative in one area of the front line while contesting Russia's overall theater-wide initiative.
ISW experts wrote in their Sunday assessment that "Russia's possession of the theater-wide initiative since November 2023 has allowed Russia to determine the location, time, scale, and requirements of fighting in Ukraine and forced Ukraine to expend materiel and manpower in reactive defensive operations."
"The Ukrainian operation in Kursk Oblast, however, has forced the Kremlin and Russian military command to react and redeploy forces and means to the sector where Ukrainian forces have launched attacks," they said.
How this plays out remains to be seen. John Kirby, a White House National Security Council spokesperson, told reporters last week that the Biden administration had been in touch with its Ukrainian counterparts about the ongoing operation.
"We are working to gain a better understanding of what they're doing, what their goals are, what their strategy is," he said Friday.
Ryan Pickrell contributed to this report.
