2022 Boat of the Year: Best Dinghy

Sailing World Magazine’s annual Boat of the Year tests are conducted in Annapolis, Maryland, following the US Sailboat Show. With independent judges exhaustively inspecting the boats on land and putting them through their paces on the water, this year’s fleet of new performance-sailing boats spanned from small dinghies to high-tech bluewater catamarans. Skeptics be warned: The Happy Cat Hurricane is legit. This is the unanimous assessment from our Boat of the Year judging squad after sailing the surprisingly quick and nimble 16-foot inflatable catamaran in 10 knots of breeze. While it delivers exhilarating sailing, it’s much more than a recreational rubber dinghy—it’s an adventure craft, a portable sailboat, a pontoon motorboat, a lazy-river drifter, or anything you want it to be once it’s pumped and splashed.

Grabner is an Austrian manufacturer of all types of inflatable watercraft, which the company has been building since the mid-1980s. The Happy Cat Hurricane came online in 2017, and a carbon-mast version was added in 2019. The Hurricane Carbon, which the judges tested, is the company’s flagship go-fun craft, and apparently, it can’t make them fast enough.

We racers know fiberglass better than we do rubber, but Alex Caslow, of Redbeard Sailing in Baltimore (the US importer), says Grabner’s vulcanized rubber is “tire-quality” and sourced from Continental. All of the Happy Cat’s tubes, he adds, are handmade, glued and welded in Austria, producing high-quality hulls that should last at least 20 years. There’s a seven-year warranty on the hulls, he says, but should you ever need to, $2,000 is your replacement price (per hull). The all-up price for a new boat, with everything you need to go racing or gunkholing, is currently $15,000.

The magic to keeping the Happy Cat’s tubular platform stiff is the anodized aluminum frame that holds it all together. Tension cables crisscrossed beneath the trampolines provide additional stiffness in waves. The frame also serves as attachment points for the trampolines, which are clipped on rather than laced like most catamaran tramps.

Happy Cat Hurricane

The boat, Caslow says, can be assembled in roughly 40 minutes—from taken out of the storage bags to inflated and sails hoisted. Upgrading from the standard manual pump to a 12-volt air pump accelerates the process, of course.

Bags? That’s right. The entire boat and rig fit into four bags collectively small enough to transport in the average-size car trunk. This portability is its primary selling point, especially in Europe, where hundreds of owners and devotees regularly gather to rally and raid on alpine lakes and coastal enclaves. Its second selling point is that it sails as well as most fiberglass recreational catamarans.

“It definitely caught my eye when we first walked up to it,” Chuck Allen says. “The bright-red hulls, the carbon rig, all the ropes, but especially the interesting setup with the rudder and centerboard being on centerline. I’d never sailed a catamaran with a centerboard.

“The hulls are really firm—they feel just like a RIB tube, and all the aluminum framing and wires are nice quality. I was really curious how it would sail, and believe it or not, it sailed like a champ.”

Greg Stewart says his first impression was one of skepticism as well. “It seemed like it would be one of those boats that looked cool on land but would let us down, but it didn’t at all. It sailed amazingly. It tacked well enough that I didn’t have to backwind the jib, and got up to speed again quickly.”

The ability to tack it like a dinghy, Stewart says, is because of the centerboard and because the rudder is mounted in the best place possible. “What makes it steer so well is the rudder is so far aft, which gives you a nice turning moment between it and the centerboard.”

The centerboard has up/down lines that are led to the front beam and cam cleats, but there is a breaker line in case you get into shallow waters. The centerboard casing also acts as an anchor point for the dolphin striker.

The reverse “wave-piercing” bows have a lot of buoyancy down low, Stewart adds. When he was sailing upwind through chop, they “just want to lift and rise up over the wave.” If flying a hull gets a bit too unnerving, he says, a small ease on the mainsheet or a slight bear away makes the boat settle right down with a soft and pillowy landing. Stewart forgot to conduct the obligatory capsize test, but he said afterward that the boat tended to simply slip sideways if the weather hull got too high. The optional masthead float, however, would be a good choice for peace of mind, he says.

“There’s a great sensation of speed,” Powlison reports, especially with the 91-square-foot gennaker. “The Velocitek SpeedPuck that was on the boat was reading 10 to 11 knots regularly, and it wasn’t hard at all to tack or jibe either. The spinnaker clew is pretty high, and the boomless square-top mainsail (124 square feet) makes it really easy to get across the boat.”

“This boat rips,” was Allen’s final assessment. He gave it high marks all around, but what ultimately stole his favor was a browse through Grabner’s catalog, which showcased the Happy Cat’s versatility: Leave the mast in its bag, erect the optional sun awning, and slap on the outboard motor bracket to transform it into an outboard-powered exploration craft and swimming platform. Or strap on extra fore and aft trampolines, load the boat up with camping gear in dry bags, and explore new places.

“Its biggest appeal really is its portability,” Stewart says. “If you don’t have easy access to a yacht club or storage near the water, you can easily keep this in the garage or apartment without taking up much space at all. Throw it in the car and take it wherever you want.”

Assembly, Caslow says, is simple and quick once the hulls are inflated. The tubes slide into grooves in the frame, tension cables are clipped on with carabiners, the trampoline is strapped on, and the mast can be raised by one person once it’s pinned onto the ball joint.

When it’s assembled, the Hurricane Carbon is only 175 pounds, but it is still a bit unwieldy for solo ramp launching. For this particular challenge, Grabner offers flip-up “slip wheels” that mount to the aft beam and stay on the boat while sailing. With your standard big-wheeled catamaran dolly, however, it’s easy to move around and beach-launch. And once you’re underway and zipping along, crew extended on the wire and the soft bounce of the hull on your bottom, you’ll just want to keep on sailing—happy as a cat on nip.

2022 Boat of the Year: Best Performance Catamaran

OK, confession time. When the roster of nominees for the 2022 Boat of the Year awards was released, the contest’s team and judging panel couldn’t help themselves, and quietly put three check marks, little symbols of anticipation, alongside a trio of boats: the untamed cats that would vie for the title of best performer in their class. After all, both Balance and Seawind had entered the winner’s circle in previous BOTY competitions, and it was clear they’d have a serious contender for the throne in yet another player from cat-crazy South Africa, the Kinetic KC54. How’d it go? Let’s just say, nobody was disappointed. The conditions on Chesapeake Bay were ideal for putting the three nominees through their paces, and the trio of scalded cats all acquitted themselves superbly. 

For 2022, if anything, the trend for flybridge catamarans is on a major upswing. New cats for 2022 from both Lagoon and Fountaine Pajot continued down that design path, putting an emphasis on living accommodations, not performance. But not aboard the latest Seawind 1600 , a brand originally built in Australia that is now produced in Vietnam. And that suits judge Tim Murphy just fine. “This boat was very dialed in,” he said, “and one place Seawind has always been innovative is with their helms. This one was really great; it was -outboard and aft with great visibility, sort of half-protected where you could step in and out. There was also good access to the boom and mainsail, which you don’t always see on cats. The deck layout was excellent, particularly the forward trampolines. Some cats have lacings with large openings where you can twist an ankle, but these were nice and tight.”

“Compared to other Seawinds that I’ve seen, I was just blown away with it in terms of what it could do and how it performed,” said Ed Sherman.  “It’s a fairly conservative boat in terms of technology compared to some of the other boats in the same category, which depending on a potential buyer’s state of mind, could be either a good thing or a bad one. I loved the centralized winch aft which is where all the sail-handling takes place. It’s pretty brilliant for a short-handed crew, and it’s all in a very safe and easy-to-access location that a cruising couple can deal with without scaring the heck out of themselves.”

The Kinetic KC54 is a fresh entry in the cat universe, and we’ll let Tim Murphy get right to the point: “This is a fairly new company that was started within the past couple of years. My breath was absolutely taken away by this boat; it was spectacular. I think it was the best-built boat in the entire fleet. It’s an all-carbon boat, with a foam core, epoxy resin, all infused–fantastic. The whole boat felt integrated. You didn’t feel like there was a conflict between the forces in terms of accommodation versus performance.” With a price tag approaching $3 million, it perhaps should not be astonishing. That was a major factor in evaluating the boat, and while it did not win its class, the experts panel did present it with a Judges’ Special Recognition prize to honor the boat’s overall excellence.

“It was my personal favorite in this year’s contest,” said Sherman. The materials that were used are absolutely the highest quality available in our industry at this point, and it’s a very high-tech boat in terms of systems.” Gerry Douglas was also duly impressed: “This was the Tesla of sailboats. I think that that was their model. In terms of design and execution and technology, it hit all three of those marks. This boat is built without compromise, and what it cost was not an issue, they just wanted to do the best they could in every aspect of the boat. The construction was impeccable, the fit and finish was amazing. There are some very clever design things in the boat, but it all really worked seamlessly.”  

With that level of competition, the Balance 482 had a tall order to overcome to win its class. And it did. “The sailing performance was excellent,” said Douglas. “The boat felt really good. The steering was terrific. The structure of the boat throughout was exemplary. Storage is really good. Visibility was good. Ventilation was great. There was even a rain collection system on the cabin top, which is the only one of the boats we looked at had that. It was very well concealed because the gutters formed a handhold going forward. The solar panel installation was also well done. The panels were encapsulated into a fiberglass tray that elevated the deck so the panels wouldn’t overheat. Very clever.”

Balance 482

The driving force behind Balance cats is Phil Berman, a world champ at racing beach cats who brought that passion to developing and marketing fully found cruisers. Judge Murphy knows him well: “Phil comes from a very strong view of wanting to see boats that have solid sailing performance. He’s also a strong proponent of daggerboard boats, which tends to be quick shorthand for the dividing line between cats that are more about payload versus cats that are about performance, but not so much where you’re going to fly a hull or break a rudder. There’s a balance within a boat that really performs that you can still live aboard.” A winning balance, it turns out, with the Balance 482 securing its position as the Best Performance Cruiser for 2022.

FUN FOR ALL AGES

The wand system controlling the foils, which can be set to fly very high, very low (even ‘no fly mode’) and all points in between. This means you can progressively add challenges to your UFO experience as you feel ready for them, from ‘beginner mode’ all the way to ‘extreme mode’. Additionally, the highly tunable sail can be set up to provide only the amount of power that your body type needs, and no excess. This means that the UFO is accessible and fun for sailors of all sizes, ages and skill levels. Merely set up the boat for your skill level and body type and go play around.

The UFO is very broadly applicable and has flown payloads from 70 pounds -a tiny kid- to 270 pounds -a tall grown man and a teenage boy-. The foil package just needs power to climb. Ultra light sailors have been caught on camera flying in 5 knots of breeze and the baseline for 225 pound sailors to take off is 10 knots. 270 flies in 12 knots of breeze.

SETUP AND BREAKDOWN

While the boat can be left on shore with everything in place, but the sail down, that doesn’t mean the UFO isn’t easy to put together or take apart. Quite the opposite. Simplicity begets simplicity and the boat is a cinch to put together and take apart.

MANAGEABILITY

Being small is it’s own reward when it comes to handling the boat through all sailing experiences. When you start to really push yourself learning to foil, there are good odds you’ll manage to capsize it. The UFO is easy to right from capsizes and even full “turtle” inversions. This last part is critical, because when catamarans are too heavy to right from turtle the only option is to make the mast float. This has the unintended downside of making the boat very likely to blow away from you. The UFO is designed to stay right alongside you in the event you are separated from the boat. Additionally, the boat possesses an uncommon “park” mode in which it will hold station of its own accord, apparently indefinitely without external input of any kind. The full benefits of that upside have not begun to be fully exploited.

FOILING AT ALL POINT OF SAIL

The Fulcrum design team strictly adhered to the axion “if there’s a point of sail (say, upwind or downwind) that it can’t always foil on, you can’t call it a foiler”. The design team achieved their goal and the UFO is a fully flying boat on all points of sail, which drastically increases its fun-factor.

At what points of sail does the UFO foil at?

The UFO fully foils at all points of sail. Upwind, downwind and reaching.  Additionally, you can set it to  not foil when you’re tired and it will do that as well, so you can get home easily. These two factors make the UFO uniquely good for learning to foil.

Who can fly the UFO?

Within reason, anyone.

UFO pilots have ranged from 8 years old to 72, from 90 pounds to 235. Young sailors do well sailing as pairs or with a middleweight to light adult. It’s rare that anyone on the fulcrum team conceives of a boat with a narrow niche in mind. Why bother? It’s a mistake in yacht design to design a boat for a narrow range of users, when for the most part people are diverse and the objective of one-design boats is to garner large fleets. That said, the boat is likely to be most satisfactory in all wind conditions in the hands of teens, small and medium men and all women. At the extreme low end of the weight range, sailors may find themselves overpowered and at the extreme high end, the wind speed required for takeoff is about two knots higher than average. UFOs have been sailed “two up” as well, though the above limits of weight range still apply to the sum of the two sailors weights.

What wind and waves can I fly a UFO in?

The UFO will sail in practically any wind condition. However, it’s important to remember that with all sailboats there are days that are great to sail in and days where you do something else.

While the UFO can at times with a skilled skipper take off in very low wind speeds, the baseline for reliable flight is around eight knots. Trying to squeeze enough power to fly out of too little wind is tiresome and in those circumstances, it’s best to do something else. In 8 knots and above, flying is magical and unforgettable. In under 8 knots, the UFO reverts to being a pleasant displacement catamaran and goes from being exciting and fast to relaxing and tactical. This is another benefit of being a catamaran.

Over the last six years the UFO has proven to be uniquely good at flying safely and consistently in very high windspeeds. In multi-class foiling regattas the UFO has proven to be the only foiler built to date that simply  loves  high windspeeds. In winds above 22 knots when other foiling boats make for shore, the UFO wants to keep playing. The upper wind limit is more a matter of taste and skill. UFOs have been sailed in 36 knots, but that requires a great deal of skill and focus.  The UFO rig having shared DNA with a windsurf rig seems to play a part in the boat’s remarkable ability to get a kick out of big wind. Since the upper wind limit on the UFO is so much higher, this makes the number of optimal days to fly a UFO (if skilled in sailing one) higher per year than with any other production foiling boat.

Most chop and wave conditions present no issue for a UFO set for the days’ conditions. After all, powered hydrofoils were first developed by various leading Navy’s as a means of smoothly flying over challenging sea-states. Choking up the ride height helps the UFO fly smoothly through the bottom of the wave pattern, undeterred. Rolling seas present even less issue, as the UFO will ride along them just like any other. Extremely tight and tall chop can be very annoying, which is not peculiar to the UFO.

Waves do effect baseline windspeeds to achieve takeoff. Imagine getting a plane to take off on a bumpy runway. This is true for all hydrofoil boats. In choppy water, ten to twelve knots can be necessary to achieve fully easy takeoffs. Some UFO sailors use aggressive kinetic techniques to overcome this and take off in choppy water and low wind.

Will I fly my first time out?

Most people do, but bear in mind that flying is a whole new experience and it takes some learning.

Conditions, setup and technique matter and if you use it incorrectly, you are likely to get some degree of incorrect results. That’s the challenge that the UFO is built to address. Over six years on the market and over 500 boats delivered, the UFO has proven to be the best and most reliable platform for ordinary sailors to reliably teach themselves foiling technique on.

What happens when I crash my UFO into something?

You’ll probably do some damage to it.

The UFO is built with durability as a core objective but it’s worth noting that the gulf between “Feather light under engineered ragged-edge high performance craft” and “literally indestructible” is extremely wide. The UFO represents neither of these extremes. Do not attempt your first flight inside a densely packed mooring field. Obstacles only make you better once you’ve mastered the basics.

How easy is it to rig a UFO?

Best in class, vs other foiling boats on the market. With that said, it’s not easier than doing nothing. Doing nothing is very easy! Putting a boat together is worthwhile but obviously involves effort.

The current cartop to launched speed record is roughly 15 minutes. Socket the mast together. Attach the boom and stays in one go. Step the rig. Flip the boat on its side, insert the foils, right the boat, hoist the sail and launch. Complexity is best avoided.

Leaving the UFO on a dock or a beach with the rig in and the foils simply in the “up” position, achieves an ease of daily use on par with any light beach cat. To go foiling all you need to do is hoist the sail with the halyard, clip the sail to the boom and attach the downhaul line and you’re ready to launch. This brings setup and breakdown to a matter of five minutes or less.

How do I launch and land a UFO?

Far far far more easily than any other foiling boat on the market.

Because the UFO is a very small catamaran, while floating the hulls float relatively deep in the water and create lateral resistance, like the hulls on a hobie 16 or hobie wave. This means that it can sail upwind without a daggerboard of any kind in the water. This is not the case with non-catamaran foilers. The rudder is outfitted with a friction brake and a down-halyard to allow its depth to vary and allow steering in shallow water. So from 16 inches of water and beyond, you can sail away from and back to shore reliably.

Because the UFO’s forward foil assembly is located  in front of  the mast, the UFO can tack and gybe while the forward foil is fully withdrawn from the water. This is unique. It allows the UFO to navigate reliably in the period between launching or landing and flying. The benefits for usability and safety cannot be overstated.

Once you’ve got to deep enough water, lower your foils fully and fly away!

That’s if you’re using a dolly.

If you aren’t using a dolly, the UFO has even more party tricks to show off. Since the foils withdraw to above the waterline of the hull, the hull can be beached or slid up onto a dock float or boat deck without any risk to damaging the foils. The UFO is a boat that’s eager to go sailing.

Can I easily cartop a UFO?

At this hull weight, the boat is very easy to put on top of a car, and its flat bottoms allow it to be strapped down hard with no drama. The other components of the boat collapse down to the point of easily fitting in a standard hatchback.

Where can I store my UFO?

Anywhere you can carry it to. Anywhere it fits.

Behind couches, under beds, under porches, in basements, inside larger boats, chained to apartment fire escapes, hanging in garages. Anywhere it can go that’s convenient for your lifestyle is a good place for it to go.

Why does X look like Y? Surely it would be better to make it like Z.

Just trust us.

If you’ve thought of it, we’ve weighed the pros and cons and its been included or excluded for good reason. Creating a boat that can be produced at an affordable price, for a wide range of sailors with a maximum quantity of accessible performance is an extremely hard target to hit. The UFO meets all of its objectives and does so by blatantly ignoring a few conventions and norms. You simply don’t make an omelet without breaking eggs.

Best catamaran and multihull: We sail the very best yachts on two and three hulls

Toby Hodges takes a look at all the nominees and the winner of the best catamaran and multihull category in the much-anticipated European Yacht of the Year Awards

There are many categories in the  European Yacht of the Year  awards, from the best  luxury yachts  and  performance yachts  to the  best yachts for families  and event a  best specialist yacht category. But with multihulls rapidly increasing in popularity, the best catamaran and multihull category was possibly the most hotly anticipated.

The small number of entrants in this category in no way reflects the rich range or huge demand for multihulls. Many new models were launched by the big yards in the preceding years and they’re struggling to keep up with bulging order books.

However, these three shortlisted represented a choice pick of the latest fast cruisers and each, in their own very different ways, are responding to this insatiable demand for high end space and pace cruising.

Best catamaran and multihull winner 2024 – outremer 52.

My highlight test of 2023? Sailing this Outremer 52 for 200 miles over two days and nights! Quite how such a large vessel, one that is capable of doing laps of the planet in true comfort, is also capable of providing such enjoyable sailing is the secret sauce that helps scoop this prize.

And it was pushed hard for this award by the disruptive HH. But the Outremer is such a well rounded, measured and thought out yacht for bluewater cruising at a reliable speed – it’s the full package, a dream boat for family bluewater sailing and arguably the French yard’s best and most refined model to date.

Designer VPLP was tasked with replacing the popular and well proven 51 with more comfort and stowage, while maintaining the performance. It says it took the best of the 55 (which won this award two years ago), and the best of the 51’s deck plan to create this 52. The result means too many good features to point out here, from the variety of helm positions, including a completely protected position inboard using the swing pedestal, to the well conceived spaces. I’d therefore recommend reading our full test report online or in YW’s June 2023 issue!

Neel continues to enjoy its cruising trimaran niche, using the wow factor of bridgedeck accommodation combined with the type of sailing enjoyment and feedback monohull sailors appreciate.

The impressive lightwind performance and direct feel of a Neel I am used to. But I don’t think I’ve ever been so surprised by the amount of cabins or space as I was on this 52. It’s available with four to six cabins plus the option for two crew cabins aft! Some of this maze works well, other areas, such as the forward cabins in the main hull not quite so well. Horizon and rig sightlines and some finishing also leaves room for improvement.

The HH44 seemingly manages to achieve the space and pace balance in a compact 45ft package, while also being one of the most innovative and exciting new production yachts I have sailed. From its looks to layout, to practical on deck solutions such as swing pedestals, side gates through the bulwarks and transom gates that double as swim platforms and boost cockpit security, it’s packed with fresh thinking.

And on the subject of ‘fresh’, the natural ventilation encouraged into the yacht through those massive forward facing coachroof windows which open – a feat made possible thanks to a stiff carbon composite structure – negates any aircon requirements.

With its deep carbon boards and tall carbon rig the HH44 is a powerful, reactive animal to sail. However, it’s the incorporation of the first parallel hybrid electric drive units which really makes this high tech high performance cat stand out. The electric motors are attached to the aft end of conventional diesel engines, not only providing silent power, but renewable energy through regenerative drives while sailing.

Best catamaran winner – nautitech 44.

If the very best catamaran delivers the ideal comfort to performance compromise, here’s a catamaran that seems to strike the perfect balance.

For those who cite a lack of visibility and protection as reasons not to choose this aft helm route, try sailing this first – direct steering brings so much more helming pleasure that you get the enjoyable feeling and communication more associated with a monohull. The attention to keeping weight low and central, vacuum infused vinylester build and a low coachroof and boom all aid this performance. The fine entry Lombard-designed hulls allowed us to properly point upwind at 8 knots (in 13), but it was the hands-on steering sensation that really stayed with me.

While there’s no real inside/outside boundary – the saloon bridges both – the Chedal-Anglay interior design works well. It is not as voluminous as some, but is certainly enough to be smugly comfortable at anchor, finished to a good quality, with walnut Alpi trim as standard. The layout option for a ‘smart room’ office/laundry/bunk room or stowage cabin is indeed really smart.

Out of all the multihulls nominated or sailed last year, this cat impressed me the most under sail. It’s the ideal size to go distance sailing, with good performance, low draught and space for family and friends. It had me dreaming.

Balance 482

I was drawn to the Balance 482, thanks to the combination of good looking modern design, high average speeds and, chiefly, the profusion of clever thinking and practical ideas that it brings. The South African build uses a foam core with E-glass laminate and cored furniture for a light weight of 11.3 tonnes, but also with the ability to take a generous payload.

An electric furler option combined with screecher sail helps offer effortless handling and fun sailing, although the 482 prefers a breeze in the double figures. Smart options such as load cells on the rigging, a bowsprit camera to monitor the anchor chain, plus engine room and mast cams all help for maintaining vigilance. Other features we like include the solar panels properly installed on raised brackets, raincatchers built into the coachroof, and how all sheets and lines are led to the helm station. But the prize solution is the VersaHelm, which allows you to swing the wheel inboard, close off the helm station, and stand watch and steer from a fully protected position.

Catana Ocean Class

The Catana Ocean Class is a bulky model which is geared more towards creature comforts than the higher performance of its predecessors. That said, it uses carbon in the structure and roof, foam cored furniture, the tanks are mounted low in the hulls and it has daggerboards and fine entry bows. The weight savings help it offer a massive 5.5 tonne cruising payload, plus there’s capacious stowage and large tank, refrigeration and laundry capacity.

Positioned between Lagoon and Outremer, the Catana echoes a bit of its sister brand Bali’s concept with its internal cockpit-cum-saloon layout while providing good ventilation via large sliding doors and opening windows. We liked how it’s easy to handle solo from one helm station, including the electric remote control of the boards, plus the layout of the galley and navstation.

Those chasing speed and helming pleasure should perhaps look to the C-Cat 48, as it’s as close to helming a fast monohull as a cruising cat is likely to get and one of the rare times we enjoyed sailing upwind in light breezes on a multihull! This is largely thanks to a lightweight, stiff build – the Comar yard has managed to save 1.7 tonnes over the first boat (9.5 tonnes light) and increased the draught of the curved daggerboards to 2.95m.

A carbon roof and rig comes as standard, as well as an epoxy hull, full carbon deck, bulkheads and compression beam. It is a little quirky with comparatively small volumes, but this François Perus design will outperform most other performance cats and monohulls of a similar length.

The Excess 14 shares that direct sensation you get from aft helms and some of the performance of the C-Cat, but in a more balanced, voluminous layout for cruising. The Excess 14 benefits from the research of VPLP’s Vannes racing office, where attention was focused on weight reduction, with savings particularly in furniture, on improved stiffness (PET foam cored sandwich for main structural bulkheads), and the efficiency of deeper fixed keels.

The result is telling on the water, as it should be for any best catamaran contender, where you can log easy miles: we clocked late 7s upwind, reached in the late 8s and regularly averaged 9 knots with gennaker in 12-15 knots. Clear glass windows give acceptable visibility from the helms through the coachroof and the comparatively minimalist interior. In short it offers a good mix of volume, reasonable performance and enjoyable sailing – see our full review last month.

Sailing performance was another key facet in the battle of the big cats from the big cat yards, Lagoon and Fountaine Pajot. Both models offer luxurious amounts of space for home from home comfort, as watersports bases for long term cruising.

The decision to push the mast to the front of the coachroof to allow for a larger genoa than its recent preference for self-tacking jibs has paid off on the Lagoon 51. It helped us sail efficiently into the waves (albeit not pointing too high) before clocking double figures reaching with the code sail in 15 knots.

The Lagoon’s large flybridge with dual access is a USP at this size that will be a hit or miss deal breaker for many. The 51 offers unrivalled accommodation volume in three, four or six cabins, and relaxation zones, and good circulation through these big spaces. Once again the jury applauds Lagoon for thoroughly testing the prototype model during a six month tour. Over 100 have already sold.

We saw in our December issue how the experienced owners of the Fountaine Pajot test boat choose to live and work full time aboard their Aura 51. It’s a design that promotes space, enough to take friends, family and crucially for them, all the toys to enjoy at anchor. Its capability of averaging 8-10 knots also appeals, although the single side helm and hydraulic steering result in scant connection to the sailing in light winds (the same applies to the Lagoon).

The fact the yard already offers this in a hybrid version and has an electric and hydrogen model in the pipeline could sway some, but the decision between the FP and the Lagoon will likely come down to preference between a central flybridge or offset bulkhead helm together with interior design and layout.

The cabins are roomy and the bathrooms are as big as those in many apartments. People who dislike tight spaces or value their privacy will find a catamaran ideal. On larger models (50+ feet), you'll have so much space, you may have trouble finding each other. Despite its comparable length, a catamaran always feels larger than its monohull counterpart. If you're used to a 50-foot sailboat, try a 45-foot catamaran and you'll still feel like you have more space.

3. Amenities comparable to a hotel room

Not only are the cabins spacious, but they are also comfortable and cosy. They usually come equipped with high-quality bedding, pillows, shelves, reading lamps, and more, making them feel like a proper room. Who is the catamaran suitable for?

Catamarans are the preferred choice for a group of friends wanting a laid-back holiday on the water but are also popular for corporate team-building events  and specialised stays like yoga. As their spacious deck provides a safe play area for children , they are also ideal for multi-family vacations.

On the other hand, we wouldn't suggest a catamaran to sporty sailors to chase the wind in, as the catamarans for charter aren't intended for racing or regattas. Due to their design, they have limited upwind capabilities (sailing boats can sail up to 30° wind angle, while charter catamarans can only handle up to 50° to 60° wind angle), making them unsuitable for competitive sailing.

Specifics of sailing on a catamaran

The principles of sailing a catamaran are similar to those of a monohull sailboat, but there are some differences to keep in mind. These may have already been covered in your captain's training course.

Travelling on the engine

A catamaran has two motors , each of which can be controlled separately using its own throttle control. Want to turn on the spot? That's no problem at all with a catamaran — simply add throttle with one motor and reverse with the other. Once you get the hang of this trick, you'll no longer need a bow thruster, although catamarans are sometimes equipped with one. This makes docking your catamaran a breeze compared to single-hulled sailboats.

Travelling on the sails

Sailing varies mainly in what courses you can sail and how strong the winds are. Most charter catamarans perform best on courses at 50 to 60 degrees to the wind. This is a greater angle compared to sailboats. So be prepared to have to adjust your planned route.

If you sail a sailboat too hard, the boat itself will tell you that you've over-steered by heeling. A catamaran won't do that, so you have to be very attentive to when to reef the sails. Usually, you will put in the first reef at a wind speed of 18 to 20 knots and the second reef at 23 to 25 knots.

Best destinations for catamaran sailing

In addition to the more traditional locations of Croatia , Greece , Italy ,  Spain and Turkey , we rent catamarans all over the world. In these destinations, you appreciate plenty of space , comfortable access to the water via steps, stability on the waves and amenities such as a barbecue and air conditioning .

However, catamarans are perfectly suited for more exotic destinations . In remote locations, the low draft comes in particularly handy as the seafloor is often poorly charted and the beaches are stunning. The large water and diesel tanks, along with an electricity generator, a desalinator to produce fresh water from seawater, and solar panels are especially useful in exotic locations where the yachting infrastructure is less developed. These features help sailors to be self-sufficient and avoid the need to find a dock every few days.

Popular destinations for catamaran sailing include the beautiful Seychelles , Thailand , French Polynesia and the Caribbean (Grenada, St. Lucia, Martinique, Antigua, St. Martin, Cuba , British Virgin Islands, Bahamas, and Belize).

The McConaghy MC52 is a performance luxury cruising cat reflective of McConaghy’s 50 years of experience in building high-tech composite projects. The luxurious boat features a flybridge, retracting centerboards, optimized hulls, and an open space bridgedeck combining the salon with the cockpit. You can also customize the boat to your specifications.

This hi-tech cat comes with sizeable sliding salon windows and frameless doors that provide fantastic views. Its wave-piercing bows can cut through waves, thus helping to increase performance by minimizing pitch resistance, while still retaining a smooth ride. Also, the saloon offers spacious dining space for up to 8 people, and the galley area is more like a penthouse.

The Nautitech 44 easily blends comfort and fun to deliver an impressive sailing performance, whether you take short trips or long ocean crossings. The boat offers a good balance under sail, and it features helming stations on each hull. Plus, there’s an integrated hardtop bimini complete with sunroof opening. Slim hulls translate to higher speeds, with the vessel reaching up to 17 knots (31.4 km/h or 19.51 mph).

The well-laid-out interior boasts a functional design, ample storage space, plus all the equipment you require for ocean cruising, such as a fridge, watermaker, and solar.

Nevertheless, the boat’s responsiveness makes sailing more pleasurable. Plus, it’s affordable; the price is between $236,000 and $334,000.

Marsaudon Composites ORC50

Marsaudon Composites vessels are ideal for both racing and cruising. The sporty-looking ORC 50 comes with large inverted bows, an angular coachroof, a high freeboard, and a sturdy rotating carbon mast. In addition, the vessel is light which allows it to accelerate quickly, while the angular coachroof offers lots of space and excellent visibility. 

The ORC50 can attain 23+ knots (42.5+ km/h or 26.41+ mph) and is among the fastest high-performance livable multihulls. It’s capable of doing more than 350 miles (563.27 km) per day.   

The downside to the ORC50 is it’s a bit technical to sail, thus requiring a skilled sailor. Furthermore, its immense power and speed can be intimidating to less experienced sailors. Solely designed for speed, the ORC50’s interior is simple, less roomy, and somewhat spartan; hence the boat might not be all that comfy. Still, it’ll get you where you want to go pretty fast, and it’s an excellent value for money at approximately $787,751.25.

Gunboat 62 

The Gunboat 62 is a true high-speed catamaran capable of sailing at 20 knots (37 km/h or 23 mph) over true wind speeds and known to notch up speeds of 36+ knots (66.7+ km/h or 41.45 mph) on a surf. The initial 3 Gunboat 62 boats featured epoxy, E-glass, and carbon fiber construction, but the fourth vessel was all carbon, sported a taller rig and a more expansive sail area. 

These structural features made the Gunboat 62s extremely light, and they formed the original luxury high-performance cruising cats.

This multihull sailboat boasts a carbon mast, round hull sections for a minimized wetted surface area, high-aspect rudders, and retractable daggerboards. The steering station offers 360-degree visibility and sports overhead hatches that you can use to monitor the mainsail trim. The boat also contains 3 private cabins with queen berths, 2 spacious heads with showers, an aft cockpit, galley, and lounge.

On the downside, Gunboats are pricey cats; hence they’re also expensive to maintain. The Gunboat 62 isn’t that spacious either as it’s more focused on speed, but it’s extremely comfortable, plus there’s plenty of space for hanging out. You can buy this catamaran starting from $2 million .

Balance 526

Built with a combination of carbon fiber, E-glass, epoxy, closed-cell foam, and composite bulkheads, this boat is strong, light, and can withstand terrible weather. The retractable daggerboards allow for good upwind performance. All high load areas contain carbon fiber, while furniture and cabinets feature cored sandwich construction, producing the lightest yet most robust catamaran. 

A Balance 526 will reach speeds of up to 20knots without stressing the rig too much.

The boat is available in various layouts and comfortably accommodates 6 people. The spacious aft cockpit and saloon provide panoramic visibility. And since Balance 526 can handle the extra weight, you get performance plus all the creature comforts you desire.

Still, Balance 526’s pricing is on the higher end, beginning at $1,440,000 . Also, the slender hulls result in less space down below. Nevertheless, the boat lives up to its name, achieving the perfect balance between superb performance and comfort.

Smaller hulls mean the vessels have much smaller bow waves to fight, allowing them to move extremely fast. In addition, the less hull area is underwater, the faster the boat is capable of moving since there’s less drag.

Having said that, it’s important to note that a narrow hull is more prone to burying its bows in rough seas. The wider the hull, the more buoyancy it offers, but only up to a given point. After which, the excessive width becomes unmanageable and performance suffers. The key lies in finding the right balance.

Performance Cruising Catamarans Have Considerable Length

The longer a cruising cat is, the faster it’ll move. While each vessel bears a maximum hull speed, in most cases, the lengthier the boat, the higher the speed it can reach. The length of the hull (length on the waterline) also has a significant impact on the speed performance. Thus, the cat attains maximum speeds when the wavelength is equal to the length on the waterline (hull speed).

Therefore, the longer the length of the hull, the better the performance of a high-speed cruising cat. You can also compare two cruising cats’ speeds based on this measure.

Modern cat manufacturers continue designing more innovative high-performance cruising cats that deliver a new blend of performance and cruising features. They achieve this by using advanced construction materials, better daggerboard designs, and creative weight allocation. They also keep a keener focus on onboard amenities. Performance Cruising Catamarans Are Light-weight

The lighter a cruising catamaran, the greater its performance. And some of the most popular high-performance catamarans find an optimal balance between performance and comfort. As a result, modern performance-based cruising cats have embraced the use of carbon composite construction for hulls, daggerboards, and rigging, instead of the somewhat heavier glass fiber materials.

A weighed-down cat produces less speed, which means excess immersion of the hulls renders the boat sluggish . The hull submersion also reduces the bridge deck clearance, promoting uncomfortable hull slamming.

You won’t find much difference in top speed between performance catamarans bearing similar lengths because they all have displacement hulls and mostly sail to hull speed with occasional surfing. This means that under skilled hands, these cats should exhibit roughly the same performance. A cruising cat’s performance is also highly dependent on the state of the sea, wind direction, and speed, amongst many other factors.

What To Consider When Choosing a Performance Cruising Catamaran

Speed is the number one consideration when choosing a high-speed cruising cat. Yet there are other factors just as important since they contribute to the overall cruising performance, including:

  •  What you’ll use the vessel for and where. Are you planning on doing coastal cruising or serious offshore cruising? Consider the number of people that you’ll be sailing with and the activities you’ll engage in. This also helps determine the size catamaran you’ll need.  
  • Comfort. While some racing enthusiasts might prefer spartan accommodation plans, most enjoy relative comfort on the high seas. In any case, modern high-speed cruising cats are designed to provide a certain level of creature comforts. And since most performance cats are custom-made, new boat owners may decide precisely which features to include in their cats. 
  • Quality. To produce light boats, builders employ the use of fine resins, carbon, epoxies, foam cores, and fiberglass. They build using a combination of vacuum-bagged techniques, foam cores, foam composite bulkheads, and make furniture and cabinetry with cored sandwich construction . 
  • Livability. One cannot underrate the appeal of sailing in a vessel with no heeling, not to mention the high privacy attained from separate living and sleeping areas. Panoramic views and exceptional deck space for lounging and entertaining are also essential in ensuring maximum cruising comfort. Fortunately, most high-speed cruising cats offer all these features and more.
  • Equipment. Sailing upwind is a challenge for cruising cats since they tend to make lots of leeway. To make things easier, high-speed cruising cats come equipped with bigger rigs and either daggerboards or centerboards. However, this also means skilled sailors are required to operate them. 
  • Cost. Catamarans are generally expensive, but a cat built with longer, leaner hulls and less costly materials can still give an outstanding performance. Such materials include foam cores, epoxy bulkheads, and epoxy resins. Furthermore, it’s not necessary to use only carbon to build a lightweight boat.

What are catamaran (dinghy) davits and why do you need them.

I keep hearing about davits on catamarans and after seeing a boat that was for sale with a broken davit (and missing its dinghy) I wanted to know more about them, so I did some research and learned a lot.

What are Catamaran Dinghy Davits and Why Do You Need Them? Catamaran davits are a set of crane like arms, typically fabricated out of stainless steel, mounted to the back of the sailboat between the transom steps, with the purpose to lift the dinghy with outboard up out of the water to secure it for sailing and also for security while at anchor. There are many different sizes, shapes and kinds of davits for catamarans.

Dinghy Davits on Catamarans (why you need them)

You don’t actually need dinghy davits but having properly engineered davits on your catamaran can make your life much more convenient and save you lots of headaches and money. You don’t absolutely need dinghy davits on a catamaran or sailboat. As I will explain later in this post, there are other, less convenience ways to lift your dinghy onboard. Other methods may also increase your personal risk of injury as moving around a dinghy and motor weighing several hundred pounds can be hard on your body and deck (and its just a lot of work).

Dinghy theft is on the rise in many popular boating locations throughout the world. Keeping the dinghy in the water at night while you are sleeping and even during the day when you are not on the boat greatly increases your risk of having the dinghy or outboard motor stolen. Why is a Good Dinghy Important?

The dinghy is like the family car for catamaran (and many other sailboat) owners. Unless you are spending all your time in a marina tied to a dock (and even sometimes when you are at a marina), you will need a way to get around. The dinghy allows you to drop the hook (anchor) and get to shore without having to swim. It is how cruisers go to the grocery store, explore islands, visit other boats, get to dive and snorkel locations, explore, walk the dog and get around without moving the entire boat off the mooring or anchorage. The more time you spend on your sailboat, the more important the size of the dinghy and the size of the outboard engine on the dinghy. The larger the dinghy, the more effort it takes to lift the dinghy in and out of the water. That’s where the davits come in.

Choosing the Right Size Dinghy

Choosing the best dinghy for your needs, boat and davit system is an important consideration. You want a dinghy that is large enough to fit your family and/or crew, carry your groceries, and family pet. You also want a motor that will allow you to get up on a plane when carrying the family and/or crew, groceries and pet. But (yes there is always a but), you don’t want to go too large that you outweigh your davit system.

Broken Davits Equal Lost Dinghys

I recently looked at a Lagoon Catamaran that was for sale. It had recently finished an Atlantic Ocean crossing. Not only was it missing one of its davits, but it was also missing its dinghy. I didn’t get all the details, but I can make an educated guess that either the dinghy was too large for the davit system or it wasn’t secured properly. I can also assume that the missing davit was the one on the outboard engine side of the dinghy (which holds most of the weight).

Which is First, Chicken (Davit) or Egg (Dinghy)?

If you are buying a used catamaran, then this decision may already be made for you, but if you need to purchase a new dinghy or both dinghy and davit system, then you need to think about engineering your davit prior to buying the dinghy. At least have an understanding of the limitations of each type of davit system and what it can hold. Buying too large of a dinghy or having undersized davits can be more than an inconvenience.

Important When Buying a Used Catamaran

Make sure your surveyor checks the davit system and provides information about the limitations of it. Many used catamarans have replaced a good dinghy with a smaller, cheap one. Don’t just think you can upgrade the dinghy without considering the davits. If you need to change both dinghy and davits it can set you back (cost you) tens of thousands of dollars, something you will want to upfront before purchasing.

Don’t Assume the Last Owner Did it Right!

When buying a used catamaran that has the perfect dinghy, don’t assume the last owner sized the davits correctly. Many used boats come out of charter and don’t experience rough seas from crossings or challenging passages. The charter companies restrict where they can sail to mostly calm seas. Once again, make your davit system is inspected by your surveyor for proper sizing, installation and any signs of stress.

Engineering the Davit System for the Dinghy

It is important to size the davits for the dinghy that it will be carrying. One common mistake is to take the overall weight of the dinghy and divide by the number of davits (two). So, if the overall weight of the dinghy is 400 pounds, the wrong way to size the davits is to carry 200 pounds each. Keep in mind that the outboard engine most likely will account for up to eighty percent of the weight of the dinghy so the davit carrying the engine side needs to be sized accordingly. Better yet, oversize both davits so that if the dinghy ever gets loaded in reverse or fills with water, it doesn’t get lost.

Properly Securing the Dinghy

Securing the dinghy to the davits is a critical step in maintaining the integrity of the davits. Going back to the example of the 400-pound overall dinghy weight, we can demonstrate how an unsecured dinghy can add a lot of stress to the davits. When the dinghy is secure it doesn’t move and generally, speaking the actual weight of the dinghy is what is transferred to the davits.

What Happens when it’s Not Secure (Fail)

When the dinghy isn’t secured properly and allowed to move around, additional weight and stress is transferred to the davits. Now imagine what happens to the dinghy when you are out at sea. Even in moderate seas, the dinghy is bouncing around and swaying back and forth adding not only downward pressure, but also side to side pressure to the davits. Over time (or the first time), this stress can cause a failure – a very expensive and potentially dangerous failure.

Boats Without Davits (Lifting the Dinghy)

So how do you lift the dinghy when there are no davits? There are a few ways to do it. Any sailboat with a boom can use it like a crane to lift the dinghy. Lift the outboard motor first, then the dinghy. This works great and is the way many smaller monohulls do it, though it does take a fair amount of effort. Of course, you can also lift it by hand, but you need strong crew in order to lift it this way and the chance of dropping it is increase. Some large catamarans have a dinghy garage and don’t need davits. Others have a large swim platform that raises and lowers to store the dinghy. Towing Your Dinghy Behind Your Boat

You can tow your dinghy behind your catamaran. This isn’t recommended for long crossings or if you are expecting heavy seas and it may slow you down, but it is another way to move your dinghy. Of course, towing your dinghy doesn’t help with security while at anchor. You’ll have to think of another way to secure your dinghy and outboard when you are not using it.

How to Get the Dinghy in and Out of the Boat (With Davits)

Dinghy davits are one of the easiest and most convenient way for catamaran owners to raise and lower the dinghy in and out of the water. Rigged with pulleys and a winch, it is much easier than doing it by hand. There are many different davit systems, but generally this is how it works.

First, you connect the lines from the front davit to the front of the dinghy. Then you connect the lines from the rear davit to the dinghy. You can pull the lines manually or if equipped with a winch nearby, wrap around a winch and use it. The winch can be a hand crank or powered. Some systems are set up to lift the front and back of the dinghy at the same time with one line to the winch. For other systems, you may pull the front part way, then the back and back to the front, etc.

How to Drain Your Dinghy

Before pulling the dinghy all the way up, raise the front up higher than the rear. This allows you to drain any water (extra weight) that may be in the dinghy before securing. When all the water is out you may want to replace the plug in the dinghy (so you don’t forget before using) and finish raising both the front and the rear to their maximum positions. If it is raining or you are not going to be using the dinghy for a while, you may consider keeping the plug out so that the dinghy doesn’t fill up with water, which can add significant weight to the dinghy and stress on the davits.

Water Weight Can Add Significant Stress to the Davit System

Water weighs 8.33 pounds per gallon. Think about how much water your dinghy can hold, then do the math (Length of interior space X Width of interior space x 7.5 x 8.33 will get you close to the weight in pounds). Of course, if you need to collect water, keeping the plug in allows the dinghy to double as a water collection device. Just make sure that your davits are designed to hold the additional weight.

A Swinging Dinghy (My Favorite Band)

Yes, that title made me chuckle also. I think if I ever have a band, I would call it the Swinging Dinghys! A band by that name might even land a gig with Jimmy Buffet! Make sure the dinghy is all the way up to eliminate any extra force and stress that can be caused by a swinging dinghy. It may be a good idea to have an extra strap or two to tightly secure the dinghy to the davit or to the boat when sailing to keep if from moving. Rachet straps are a good idea for long passages. Remember a swinging dinghy can jeopardize the davit system (and your dinghy).

Man Overboard!

I have read about this happening to more than one person on the forums. The dinghy line comes loose and someone reaches out to pull the line tight just as a rogue wave hits the boat at a weird angle. In a split second, the person slips (or flips) overboard – hopefully noticed by someone onboard. A couple of points. Make sure you alert your captain and crew before attempting a fix so they are alert to what you are doing. If you are on a passage or in rough seas, it’s a good idea to have a safety line and/or PFD (i.e. life jacket) with EPIRB (beacon) so you can be found if you do go overboard.

Extra Padding

Depending on the davit system and type of catamaran, you may need to add padding on the davit to protect the dinghy when up and secure. The constant rubbing that occurs especially on long passages or crossings or in rough and choppy seas can harm your dinghy.

Custom Davit Systems

The davit system described in the above paragraph is one type, but there are many other types by OEM and custom aftermarket davit manufacturers. Many catamaran manufacturers use a davit system where the entire davit system (the stainless steel arms or frame) drops down towards the water. In this case, you clip each dinghy lines to the davit and lift the entire davit with one line through the winch. Both the front of the dinghy and rear of the dinghy and davit frame lifts at the same time.

Practical Davit Considerations

In addition to making sure the davit system is engineered to handle the weight of the dinghy (both actual and in motion) with consideration for the weight of the outboard motor, there are some other important things to look at.

First, make sure the dinghy fits the davit or the davit fits the dinghy. If not sized correctly, the motor may hit and rub on the davit. Next, consider how you are going to clip the dinghy to the davit. Will you be able to secure it in choppy seas? If you upgrade your dinghy, will your davits hold it. Very important to know before installing new davits and/or before buying a new dinghy. Davits are costly and so is a dinghy.

Most catamaran owners will spend a considerable amount of time in their dinghy. It is a critical part of the catamaran sailing experience. It is therefore not only extremely important to have a dinghy that will fulfill your needs, but also to have a convenient way to store it. If you have the budget, invest in the best davit system you can buy as it will take away one challenge that comes with life on the high seas.

The  Fountaine Pajot MY44 , a creation of Italian architect Pierangelo Andreani and French designer Daniel Andrieu, has a main deck that’s open from the aft-deck seating all the way forward to the starboard helm station. The sense of spaciousness is significant, for several reasons. First, four glass panels aft can all slide to port, creating an indoor-outdoor space with the aft deck and salon. In the salon, 32-inch-high windows extend for 12 feet down the sides of the yacht, with three sections per side, bringing in natural light along with the three forward panes that comprise the windshield. The Olympic sailing team that never was

In the run up to the 1980 olympics Britain had the most talented, best prepared and most professional sailing team ever, yet the athletes never got to compete. Rupert Holmes reports.

In 1980, with the world locked into the politics of the Cold War, the USA attempted to pressurise the USSR, which had recently invaded Afghanistan, by boycotting the Moscow Olympics and trying to stop all other western countries attending. Most ignored this request, but the new British government led by Margaret Thatcher wanted to emphasise Britain’s special relationship with the USA and agreed to the boycott.

All but a handful of the UK sporting authorities ignored the government’s wishes, but the RYA decided to toe the party line. ‘It fell to the late Vernon Stratton [then manager of the British Olympic sailing team] to break the news to us; the whole Olympic squad,’ says Flying Dutchman sailor Patrick Blake. ‘We were in Hyeres, it was pouring with rain and there was no wind, so we couldn’t even go sailing while the enormity of what he had said sank in.

‘Imagine standing in front of the present “Sail for Gold” team to tell them that, in spite of everything they have achieved and are hoping to bring to a climax at the 2012 Games, they are not going to be allowed to compete.’

‘What was so ridiculous is that the RYA was determined to make a decision before the athletes,’ Stratton recalled many years later. ‘The reason was that the equestrians had already decided not to go; Prince Phillip was heavily involved with them and was about to become president of the RYA. My argument was “We’re only a part of the Olympic team, why not wait until the British Olympic Committee makes a decision on behalf of everyone?” But the RYA wouldn’t listen.

‘That decision completely killed our Olympic hopes,’ he continues. ‘We had a fantastic team of highly tuned people, but what did they do? They all went off and sailed big boats and never came back. That’s why we didn’t do as well as we should in Los Angeles.’ [Britain’s sailors achieved just one bronze medal].

Not surprisingly the decision was also to have a devastating effect on the individuals concerned. ‘With no real explanation for the RYA’s decision … I remember it being a dark period in my life, watching British Olympians receive their medals. Reflecting back on this over the last few months I’m truly not sure that I ever got past that time,’ recalls 470 sailor Jeremy Richards.

Names: Rob White and David Campbell-James Age in 1980: 25 and 30 Background and preparation:  Rob and David were dominant in the class, winning the 1979 pre-Olympics as well as the 1980 Europeans, held a few weeks before the Games and at which all the top teams competed. They were subsequently selected for Los Angeles in 1984, but finished sixth. Rob went on to win the worlds and Europeans in 1985 and 1986, crewed by Jeremy Newman and Tim Hancock.

After 1980: Rob has remained at the forefront of the catamaran and dinghy sailing world, where his expertise as a prolific designer and boatbuilder is evident across a huge variety of classes, from Topper International’s products to high-tech racing multihulls, including the C Class. He was also a key figure in the development of the Laser SB3.

After retiring from competitive sailing David has ploughed a huge amount back into the sport, and is well known as a world class race officer and coach, working at all levels of the sport, from Optimists to the World Match Racing Tour. He will be 49er race officer in Weymouth for the 2012 Olympics.

1980 medal prospects:  Rob and David were at the peak of their Tornado sailing prowess and stood every chance of gold.

Name: Chris Law Age in 1980: 28 Background and preparation: Chris was an all-round sportsman, having played rugby for England schoolboys, but his heart was in sailing. He started in Cadets at Tamesis SC with brother Tim, switching to the Finn while still at school. Having sailed Finns for more than a decade, Chris was perhaps the best prepared of all the athletes in the class in the run up to the 1980 Games. He won the worlds in 1976 and the Europeans just three weeks before the Games, beating all the subsequent Olympic medallists with a race to spare.

After 1980: Chris never sailed a Finn again, but raced a Soling at the 1984 Games, with Ed Leask and Jerry Rich- ards (who qualified to sail the 470 in 1980) and finishing an agonising fourth.

Like many of the 1980 team, he went on to sail big boats, including helming ‘Victory’ in the 1983 America’s Cup and ‘White Crusader’ in 1987. He also steered to victory in the Rolex Fastnet and Sydney Hobart races. Later he became one of the world’s top match racers, winning 12 ISAF Grade 1 events and reaching second in the world rankings. Chris also did a great deal of coaching, both of enthusiastic amateurs and young people.

However, the boycott hurt him in many ways and after 1980 he endured a long-running battle with depression, which eventually led to his death in 2007.

1980 medal prospects:  There was never any doubt, either among commentators, or his fellow Finn sailors, about where Chris was heading – he was clear favourite for Gold.

Names: Colin Simonds (helm), Gavin Simonds, Chris Osborne Age in 1980: 29, 25, 26 Background and preparation:  Aged 12 Colin was lent a dinghy and won the first race he entered. By 1976 he had been borrowing his father’s Soling for several years, joined by one of his brothers, Gavin, and Chris Osborne, and was scoring top three results. The trio were reserve crew for the 1976 Olympics and won the practice race by a good margin. These were the days before Olympic sailors were funded and a Soling campaign was not cheap. Colin worked in the Middle East from 1977- 79 to earn the money for a competitive campaign, raising £30,000 – enough to buy a respectable house then.

They won the 1980 trials very comfortably with four wins, a second and a third, ahead of Phil Crebbin and Alan Warren. The bronze medal at the Games went to a boat they had beaten in two events out of four in 1979-80.

After 1980: Colin won selection for the last helm spot on the Victory America’s Cup campaign and qualified for the 1983 Admiral’s Cup. He then moved to racing with a combination of his wife Caroline, Chris Osborne, both brothers and other family in J/24s, taking a second and fourth at the nationals, plus five top 10 European and world results. He also counts the 707 and Laser SB3 among the six national titles he has won in five classes. The brothers have served on numerous committees, including captaining the 200-strong Seaview dinghy class, with Colin also an SB3 world council committee member and rules supremo for six years.

1980 medal prospects:  This was a competitive campaign hampered only by Colin’s need to be out of the country to earn the funding necessary. Although they perhaps never achieved full potential, they certainly had the possibility of winning a medal.

Names: Andrew Hurst, Iain Woolward Age in 1980: 24, 31 Background and preparation:  Andrew and Iain were based in California for two-years’ full-time training in 1978- 79, where they moved up the world’s then strongest Star fleet. They shared a studio flat from which Iain worked at his ‘day job’ for 4-5 hours until around 10am, by which time Andrew had prepared the boat for training.

They were supported by North Sails San Francisco, headed by Star world champion Tom Blackaller, with whom they tested and raced extensively, with emphasis on light air pace, and had a ‘Tallinn special’ boat built for light air speed. Before returning to the UK they were third in heavy air (not their optimised conditions) at the California Regions, behind Blackaller and Buchan but ahead of 25 top US and visiting Olympic crews. At the Weymouth trials they took five straight wins.

After 1980: Following the boycott and a five-week 1984 Olympic mini-campaign Andrew turned to offshore racing. He subsequently helmed or skippered boats winning the Admiral’s Cup, Sardinia Cup, Fastnet, Commodores’ Cup, plus countless other major trophies. He also raced high- profile offshore multihulls, including ‘Jet Services’, ‘Spirit of Apricot’ and ‘Lakota’. He still races a Laser, taking the class prize at the 2010 Bloody Mary. After 1980 Iain returned to San Francisco, where he founded a successful marketing consultancy, and competed in the 1984 Olympics with John Maddocks as crew.

1980 medal prospects:  They put in a huge amount of work and sacrifice to train for light airs, and were frequently the fastest boat in these conditions – a medal was clearly within their grasp.

Flying Dutchman

Names: Patrick Blake and Christian Houchin Age in 1980: 35 and 26 Background and preparation:  The FD class had been dominated by Rodney Pattison, who won gold in 1968, 1972, plus silver in 1976 and whose record as Britain’s most successful sailor was only recently beaten by Ben Ainslie. Chris and Patrick sailed hard for four years, racing in as many European events as possible, and built a boat to a new shape. In the run up to the 1980 Games they were close to the front of most international regattas, beating Pattison easily, but John Loveday at times proved tougher. Chris and Patrick won selection with a day to spare, comprehensively beating the Irish team of David Wilkins and Jamie Wilkinson, who won silver at Tallinn.

After 1980: Patrick went back to his roots, borrowing a Merlin Rocket and winning the championship. International 14s followed, before a move into yacht racing with an X-99. He became X-99 class chairman, still serves on the Merlin Rocket committee, and sails as regularly as possible.

Christian also moved to yachts, first with Patrick, then with Robbie Boulter with successes including winning Cork Week. He later shared a J/24, winning at Falmouth Week, and was active in Optimist circles for nearly a decade, including a spell as vice chair of the UK class. As a director of the Little Britain Challenge Cup he was instrumental in RYA Sailability being chosen as one of the event’s charities, raising £150,000 for the GBR Paralympic team.

1980 medal prospects:  A silver medal was clearly well within their grasp and winning gold was a possibility.

Names: Eddie Warden Owen and Jeremy Richards Age in 1980: 28, 24 Background and preparation:  Winners of Weymouth Olympic Week in 1979 and 1980 beating international rivals who went on to great achievements.

After 1980: Both enjoyed considerable success, with Jeremy sailing a Soling with Chris Law and Edward Leask, winning the 1983 pre-Olympics and 1984 Hyeres Olympic Week. They competed at the 1984 Games, and in 1988, with Lawrie Smith as helm, finishing fourth both times. Jeremy also won the J/24 worlds, with Dave Curtis from the USA. Eddie and Jeremy competed together for about 15 years, including the 1993 Admiral’s Cup, when Graham Walker’s 50ft ‘Indulgence’ won the Fastnet by the tighest margin, to win overall. Jeremy was in the first non-USA team to win the Congressional Cup match race, with Harold Cudmore, returning to win it with Eddie. Jeremy, who works for Gill USA, now races stock cars and an MGB GTV8. Eddie is CEO of RORC.

1980 medal prospects: A realistic opportunity for a medal, with the duo having just taken third place at Hyeres Olympic Week.

Wingsail crumples on a foiling 50-foot catamaran during SailGP training

HAMILTON, Bermuda (AP) — The wingsail of a foiling F50 catamaran being steered by Martine Grael of Brazil suddenly crumpled and crashed to the deck on Monday during a SailGP preseason training camp. There were no injuries.

The boat was foiling at about 70 kph (43 mph) when the wing measuring 24 meters (79 feet) failed. Video from the boat appears to show the crew beginning a maneuver. While one crewman ran to the jib, which began flapping, another crewman scrambled to the base of the wing and then back to the starboard cockpit, narrowly avoiding the falling debris. A loud popping sound could be heard.

Grael, a double Olympic gold medalist, was announced last week as the first woman to helm a boat in the global league, which was co-founded by tech billionaire Larry Ellison and five-time America’s Cup winner Russell Coutts of New Zealand. The six-person crew Monday included both new Brazilian team members and experienced SailGP athletes.

The extensive damage will affect the rest of the training camp since there’s just one boat in Bermuda. The next training camp will be before the first regatta of Season 5 in Dubai on Nov. 23-24.

Exactly one year earlier, Team New Zealand’s 29-meter (95-foot) wingsail suddenly shattered and fell into the Mediterranean in a stunning scene just moments after the Kiwis finished racing on the first day of the France Sail Grand Prix in Saint-Tropez. The crew escaped injuries but the damage sidelined the boat through the following regatta.

The highly complex wingsails look and function like airliner wings, providing the power that allows the 50-foot catamarans to foil above the waves approaching highway speeds. They can be configured for different strength winds and weigh between 400 and 500 kilograms (between 900 and 1,100 pounds).

SailGP includes the world’s best sailors, including many who have won Olympic medals and the America’s Cup. The $2 million, winner-take-all season championship race is the biggest cash prize in sailing.

A woman is killed near Moscow after more than 140 Ukrainian drones target Russia, officials say

Over 140 Ukrainian drones targeted multiple Russian regions overnight, including Moscow and surrounding areas, killing at least one person and injuring eight, officials said Tuesday, in one of the biggest drone attacks on Russian soil in the 2 1/2-year war .

A woman died in the town of Ramenskoye, just outside Moscow, where drones hit two multistory residential buildings and started fires, Moscow region Gov. Andrei Vorobyov said. Five residential buildings were evacuated due to falling drone debris, Vorobyov said.

The attack also prompted the authorities to shut three airports just outside Moscow — Vnukovo, Domodedovo and Zhukovsky — forcing 48 flights to be diverted to other airports, according to Russia’s civil aviation authority, Rosaviatsia.

The first two airports, which are Russia's second- and third-busiest, reopened in the morning but Zhukovsky was still closed in the afternoon because law enforcement officers were dealing with drone debris there, an airport spokesperson told the Interfax news agency.

It was the second massive Ukrainian drone attack on Russia this month. On Sept. 1, the Russian military said it intercepted 158 Ukrainian drones over more than a dozen Russian regions in what Russian media described as the biggest Ukrainian drone barrage since the start of the war. Russia’s Investigative Committee announced a criminal investigation into what it described as a terror attack.

Russia has pummeled Ukraine with missiles, glide bombs and its own drones, killing over 10,000 civilians since the war began in 2022, according to the United Nations.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian air force said Russia launched 46 Shahed drones and two missiles at Ukraine overnight. The air force said it downed 36 of the drones.

Ukraine has invested a lot of effort in developing domestic drone production, extending drones' range, payload and uses. It has increasingly utilized drone blitzes to slow Russia's war machine, disrupt Russian society and provoke the Kremlin.

Ukrainian officials have complained that weapons pledged by the country’s Western partners fall short of what their military needs and commonly arrive long after promised. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged defense companies to increase their output.

On the battlefield's 1,000-kilometer (600-mile) front line, Ukrainian troops are up against Russia's larger and better-equipped army. The two sides are especially contesting parts of eastern Ukraine's Donetsk region , fighting over towns and villages that are bombed-out wrecks, while Ukraine last month launched a bold incursion into Russia's Kursk border region.

In Moscow on Monday night, drone debris fell on a private house on the outskirts of the city, but no one was hurt, Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said. He counted over a dozen drones heading toward Moscow that were shot down by air defenses as they were approaching the city.

Overall, Russia’s Defense Ministry said it “intercepted and destroyed” 144 Ukrainian drones over nine Russian regions, including those on the border with Ukraine and those deeper inside Russia.

Ukrainian officials declined to comment on the attack.

As the war drags on, Russian President Vladimir Putin has been expanding his alliances:

The Russian military on Tuesday began massive naval and air drills , involving over 90,000 troops and over 400 warships, that China will also take part in, the Defense Ministry said.

Putin is also beefing up his military arsenal with Iranian ballistic missiles , the United States and Britain said Tuesday.

Moscow and the surrounding region have often come under attack throughout the war.

In May 2023, Russian officials said Ukraine tried to attack the Kremlin with drones which lightly damaged the roof of the palace that includes one of Putin's official residences.

In August 2023, a drone attack on Moscow's prestigious business district blew out part of a section of windows on a high-rise building and sent glass cascading to the streets, unsettling Muscovites. The attacks exposed gaps in the city and region's air defenses.
