Pionier 9 is a 29 ′ 10 ″ / 9.1 m monohull sailboat designed by E. G. Van de Stadt and built by Tyler Boat Co. Ltd. and Southern Ocean Shipyard Ltd. starting in 1959.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
• LOA: Length overall in feet
• Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

VDS #055. The PIONIER (9) is said to be the first series-built fiberglass cruising yacht built in Europe. A prototype was built of wood that became the ‘plug’ and the first boat was finished in the summer of 1959, just in time to participate in the Flevo Race of that year. E. G. van de Stadt sailed the race himself and finished first in class. The PIONIER 9 was also built in the UK, molded by Tyler Boat Co, and finished by Southern Ocean Shipyard. Review of Pionier 9

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

The Pionier 9 is equipped with a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a full keel.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.40 - 1.50 meter (4.59 - 4.89 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Pionier 9 is 1.49, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.6 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Pionier 9 is about 117 kg/cm, alternatively 659 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 117 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 659 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

A sturdy yacht designed by Van de Stadt, she has been in the present ownership for 32 years. She is offered for sale due to ill health. The hull has been treated for osmosis,which involved removal of the keel,all gel coat from waterline to keel level removed and replaced followed by two coats of primer and nine coats of epoxy.The keel was then replaced and glassed in. The hull has had additional stiffening added and has a set of beaching legs available allowing her to take the ground easily. The vessel has been stored ashore for three years and would benefit from a make over by an enthusiastic owner. They were described by the press at the time as "wind driven torpedoes". Built in the early days of GRP, she has a reassuringly thick hull to push through waves whilst allowing for flex. Emhoff used his speech to show a personal side of Harris , who he described as the anchor of their family. While Harris skipped night two of the DNC to campaign in Milwaukee, she symbolically accepted the party’s presidential nomination after delegates at the convention held a ceremonial roll call. The speaker lineup today includes Harris’ running mate Tim Walz, former President Bill Clinton, and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

2. Chicago protests

Large protests are erupting outside the Democratic National Convention this week, including clashes with police in the streets of Chicago . Crews set up an additional line of security fences in the area on Tuesday — a day after a group of pro-Palestinian demonstrators , rallying against US support for Israel in its war against Hamas, breached a barrier near the United Center. Tuesday’s protests also saw some tense moments outside the Israeli Consulate in Chicago where protesters and police in helmets began pushing and shoving, a CNN crew observed. Hundreds of officers have taken to the streets, clearing the roadway and sidewalks. It’s unclear how many arrests had been made Tuesday but multiple people appeared to be detained by police.

Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is considering dropping out of the 2024 race and endorsing former President Donald Trump, his running mate Nicole Shanahan said in an interview Tuesday. She framed the decision as an effort to reduce “the risk” of Vice President Kamala Harris becoming president, arguing Kennedy pulls more votes from Trump than from Harris. When asked about the role Kennedy could play in a future Trump administration, Shanahan speculated that her running mate may be open to taking a role as secretary of health and human services. Trump said Tuesday he would “certainly” be open to Kennedy playing a role in his administration. This comes as new filings also show Kennedy is facing dwindling campaign resources and nearly $3.5 million in outstanding debts.

Russian authorities today accused Ukraine of launching “one of the largest ever” attempts to attack Moscow with drones. Russia said their defense systems had destroyed 45 Ukrainian drones overnight — including 11 over Moscow, two over the Belgorod border region and two in Kursk. Since the Ukrainian incursion began nearly two weeks ago, its forces are inching forward in Kursk and destroying key bridges in an effort to cripple Moscow’s logistical capabilities and disrupt supply routes. Separately, Russian authorities have urged people in the border regions to stop using dating apps and limit their use of social media to prevent Ukrainian forces from gathering intelligence as they press on with their advance.

5. Superyacht sinks

Italian authorities continued their search today for six missing people after a tornado sank a luxury yacht Monday off the coast of Sicily. Fifteen passengers were rescued from the boat shortly after it capsized, according to Italy’s Coast Guard. One body was later recovered from the hull of the stricken vessel, called the “Bayesian.” Two Americans and four Britons are among those missing — including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch , Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and Chris Morvillo, a prominent lawyer. Initial reports suggest a small waterspout, which developed over the area Monday, could have been behind the yacht’s sinking.

Tributes paid to 'UK's greatest tech entrepreneur'

Friends and colleagues of Mike Lynch have paid tribute to "the UK's greatest tech entrepreneur" after he was confirmed to have died when a luxury yacht sank off the coast of Sicily.

The British businessman, 59, was killed, along with his daughter Hannah, 18, and five other people when the boat foundered in stormy weather early on Monday.

Their bodies were recovered following a search by divers spanning several days, with Hannah's the last to be brought ashore, on Friday.

Mr Lynch was a prominent figure in the UK tech industry, where his backing of successful companies led to him being dubbed the British equivalent of Microsoft founder Bill Gates.

However, he later became embroiled in a long-running legal dispute which resulted in him being controversially extradited to the US, before being acquitted earlier this summer .

In a statement on Friday, a spokesperson for the Lynch family said it was a time of "unspeakable grief" for them.

“The Lynch family is devastated, in shock and is being comforted and supported by family and friends. Their thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragedy," they said.

Andrew Kanter, a close friend and colleague of Mr Lynch, said he was “the most brilliant mind and caring person I have ever known.”

“Over nearly a quarter century I had the privilege of working beside someone unrivalled in their understanding of technology and business,” he said.

Former Sun newspaper editor David Yelland said Mr Lynch was "an irreplaceable loss not only to those that loved him but also to the country".

"He is the UK's greatest tech entrepreneur of recent decades, a family man, a long-time client of my business and a friend," he said.

"To think Mike Lynch lost his life just as he began to rebuild it is devastating for all those that know him."

Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy Bloomer, Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo, his wife Neda Morvillo and Recaldo Thomas, the yacht's chef, also died when the vessel sank.

In a statement confirming their parents' deaths, the Bloomer family described the couple as "incredible people and an inspiration to many".

Mr Lynch is survived by his wife Angela Bacares, who was rescued, along with 14 others, after the yacht sank, as well as their elder daughter Esme.

Mike Lynch and Angela Barcares lived at the Loudham Hall estate in Suffolk.

Brent Hoberman, co-founder of Lastminute.com, described the events as "tragic", saying Mr Lynch had much more to give to the UK tech scene.

"He was still on his journey, and he’d been sidetracked for a decade with this court case," he told the BBC.

"I think there was a lot of unfulfilled potential."

IT analyst Richard Holway said in a post on LinkedIn that Mr Lynch - a friend of more than 25 years - was "a unique British tech talent".

"Goodness knows what he could have achieved next," he added.

Business highs and lows

Mr Lynch co-founded tech firm Autonomy in 1996, which expanded rapidly and was sold to Hewlett Packard for $11bn (£8.6bn) in 2011, from which he is believed to have netted £500m.

But questions over the sale of Autonomy led to a long-running legal battle.

In 2022, Mr Lynch lost a civil fraud case against HP at the High Court in London.

A day later, he was extradited to the US as part of criminal proceedings, and was facing a possible two decades in jail.

He was acquitted in June this year after a jury found him not guilty of the crimes.

He told BBC Radio 4 that though he was convinced of his innocence, he was only able to prove it in a US court because he was rich enough to pay the enormous legal fees involved.

Mr Lynch is reported to have gone on the yacht trip with his family to celebrate securing his freedom.

Its name, Bayesian, is understood to derive from the theory that his PhD thesis - and the software that underpinned Autonomy - was based on.

Witnesses say its aluminium mast broke in half in a storm, causing the ship to lose its balance and sink.

Dick Smith, a neighbour of Mr Lynch, told the BBC he was "reeling from the shock of the news".

"He was so approachable and a very easy person to talk to with a nice sense of humour," he said.

"You might think with all that money he would be difficult to talk to, but in fact he was a very easy person to talk to."

Born on 16 June 1965, Mr Lynch was the son of a nurse and a fireman, and was raised near Chelmsford in Essex.

His first computer was a BBC Micro, and he wrote fondly of how it shaped his passion for programming in a 2011 BBC article celebrating 30 years of the device .

While at school his "first foray into commercialisation of technology" came when designing a digital sampler that could sample music, then selling the designs, according to a 2017 interview .

He continued the hobby while studying Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge - where he said he annoyed his college by getting "solder in the carpets" of his room.

While at Cambridge he earned a PhD in mathematical computing, and later undertook a research fellowship.

In 1991, Mr Lynch helped establish Cambridge Neurodynamics - a firm which specialised in using computer-based detection and recognition of fingerprints.

His tech firm Autonomy was created five years later, using a statistical method known as "Bayesian inference" at the core of its software.

The company's fast-paced growth and success throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s saw Mr Lynch earn a number of awards and accolades.

In 2006 he was awarded an OBE in recognition of his service to UK enterprise.

He served on the board of the BBC as a non-executive director, and in 2011 was appointed to the government's council for science and technology - advising then-Prime Minister David Cameron on the risks and possibilities of AI development.

Following the sale of Autonomy, Mr Lynch established tech firm Invoke Capital, which helped create prominent UK cybersecurity firm Darktrace in 2013. Lynch had a seat on its board until earlier this year.

Reacting to the news on Thursday, a spokesperson for Darktrace said that they were shocked by the tragedy, describing Mr Lynch as an "active champion" of the UK's technology sector.

The go-anywhere 46m/151ft expedition yacht PIONEER is available for charter this summer in the wonderfully wild and remote cruising grounds of Greenland and the Northwest Passage.

Built for off-the-beaten track adventures, PIONEER was launched by Palmer Johnson in 2006 and, following an extensive 2015 refit, has been adventuring to far-flung destinations. She is now offering the rare opportunity to explore Greenland during the month of July.

Designed by Vripack, she has an 8,000 nautical mile range and a modern stabilisation system for smooth and comfortable cruising in this ice-covered region. The jagged, fjord-line coastline certainly invites exploration, with astounding Artic wildlife to spot on land and under the water.

The Northwest Passage, meanwhile, is a series of waterways winding though the Canadian Artic Archipelago, and charters will be able to experience the amazing wildlife, history and local Inuit culture the passages offers from mid-August as PIONEER returns south towards the Caribbean .

As well as taking in sublime landscapes of snow-capped mountains, lush meadows and floating icebergs, guests will also be able to experience the endless days known as the midnight sun, dive shipwrecks, sea kayak like a local and retrace the routes of by-gone explorers.

The modern-classic interior aboard luxury yacht PIONEER provides a sumptuous retreat after a day of diving under the icebergs, heli-skiing or trekking though mountainous terrain. Warm woods and pale furnishings create a welcoming atmosphere for all to enjoy on a private yacht charter .

On the main deck, guests can get-together in the large salon or take some time out in the adjoining library before being served dinner in a formal dining salon. There are plenty of opportunities for dining and relaxing on deck too, with a highlight being the split-level sundeck.

After a busy day on the water, charterers can retreat into one of five staterooms. Located on the upper deck, a master suite incorporates a private lounge and benefits from stunning panoramic vistas. The remaining cabins are on the lower deck alongside a fully-equipped gym.
