swan sailing yachts

The Nautor’s Swan shipyard is located in the small Finnish town of Pietarsaari, just a short distance from the Arctic Circle. On this icey stretch of coast, Nautor’s Swan have been building boats since 1966 and the Swan range is known throughout the world. In a build environment where temperatures can fall to minus 30 degrees celsius, and the sea can be frozen for up to five months of the year, advanced engineering excellence is a core part of the yard’s DNA.

Nautor’s Swan handles everything from the design to the finest details in a fully integrated in-house building process. The smaller Nautor’s Swan hulls, for cruising yachts, are hand laid-up and vacuum-infused, while the larger models are constructed in foam-core carbon, which has huge weight-saving benefits.

Swan yacht buyers can also enjoy membership of ‘Club Swan’ – a non-profit organization for past, present and future Swan sailing yacht owners. The Club organizes various regattas, including the ‘Rolex Swan Cup’, the ‘Swan European Regatta’ and the ‘Swan American Regatta’ and these are run in association with the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, the Royal Yacht Squadron of Cowes and the New York Yacht Club, respectively.

Today, with more than 50 years’ of heritage, Nautor’s Swan is globally recognized as an undisputed leader in the international sailing market.

History of Nautor’s Swan Yachts

The Nautor’s Swan Shipyard was founded in 1966 by Pekka Koskenkyla, a man with an inspiring vision to produce high-quality, high-performance sailing yachts for those passionate about cruising, racing and seeking contact with the ocean and nature. Pekka, educated in the USA, had the foresight to engage Sparkman & Stephens of New York, one of the most acclaimed yacht designers at the time, to design the first sailing yacht. The vessel was built in fiberglass and trimmed with wood – materials which would dominate the production of vessels in the years to come.

The first sailing yacht model from the Nautor’s Swan shipyard was the Swan 36, and this led to the Swan 37 and Swan 43, with the latter winning the Admiral’s Cup in 1969.

That same year, fate’s fickle hand dealt the Nautor’s Swan yard a catastrophic blow. The Assembly Hall caught fire and burnt to the ground, destroying with it a dozen hulls in various stages of production. Pekka was forced to sell stakes in the company to finance the yard’s rebuild and see production resumed.

When the yard was re-established, the larger and more elegant Swan 55 and Swan 65 yachts were born. Partnering cruising capability with racing prowess for the typical owner and recreational yachtsman, the designs were immensely popular. Testament to their racing ability, it was a Swan 65 (named SAYULA II) that won the first Whitbread Round the World Race in 1973/74.

In the late 70’s and early 80’s, Nautor’s Swan engaged naval architect Ron Holland as their designer of choice. Holland designed five boats for the yard, of which approximately 300 units were produced.

The mid to late 80s saw Swan enter another new era of design, this time with the appointment of German Frers. Along with a string of great successes in models under 80 foot (24m), Frers was also responsible for Swan’s first Maxi models; the Swan 80, Swan 90, Swan 100, Swan 105, Swan 110 and Swan 115 – with the 115 seeing the yard cross over into superyacht territory.

Frers’ contribution to Nautor’s Swan also permitted them entrance to the ‘one design’ racing sector, with the design of the Swan 45 in 2001. This was followed by the ‘Club Swan 42’ in 2005 which was developed in association with the New York Yacht Club.

In 2002, a new yard, close to the sea, was opened in Jakobstad. The new yard is dedicated to the assembly of the Maxi Swans, building the Swan 60 through to the Swan 115.

In 2017, Nautor’s Swan opened their Boatbuilding Technology Center. Here, there are facilities dedicated to joinery and high-tech lamination, a post-cure oven, painting halls, and areas for warehousing and logistics. The close proximity of the engineering and manufacturing departments results in an efficiency that is rarely seen.

Nautor’s Swan has been controlled and managed by Leonardo Ferragamo and his group of investors since 1998.

Nautor’s Swan is recognized as a leader in the international sailing market.

The Nautor’s Swan collection

Known today as ‘Swans’, the modern yachts built by Nautor’s Swan owe their success and acclaim to the original Swan 36. This first design, which featured a number of significant innovations, offered a level or performance and safety that equalled that of traditional wooden vessels yet the lighter fiberglass hull provided greater steering ability and enhanced living space. The Swan 36 marked the beginning of what would become one of the most prestigious boat yards in the world.

The Swans of the ‘70s and ‘80s were designed by the award-winning naval architect Ron Holland. German Frers took over as Swan’s naval architect of choice from the mid to late 80s, and he designed many highly successful models under 80 foot (24m) for the shipyard.

Swan’s first Maxi yacht models were also designed by Frers: the Swan 80, Swan 90, Swan 100, Swan 105, Swan 110 and Swan 115. The 115 brought Nautor’s Swan into the superyacht sector and the skills of Frers’ have again been employed for the design of Swan’s latest sailing yacht, the Swan 120.

Sporty and Simple is the ClubSwan 28

ClubSwan 28 on the water

With its long history producing good-looking fast cruisers, in recent years, Nautor Swan has consolidated its performance yachts into its ClubSwan range, spanning the giant 125-foot Skorpios and the 80-footer My Son g to their fleets of ClubSwan 36s and 50s. All designs by Juan Kouyoumdjian, the latter saw 11 and 15 compete in their respective five-event annual championships (Nations Cup) in 2023 and are set to be joined by the ClubSwan 43 this year. But Nautor Swan has another new development: While its smallest boats have been the ClubSwan 36 (plus the original Swan 36 back in 1967), its latest launch is its smallest ever, the ClubSwan 28.

This new model is not surprising given that Swan is sailing’s most prolific premium brand, with more large performance sailing yachts in existence than any other manufacturer. Its range firmly extends into the superyacht stratosphere, so why not lure new owners into the fold, earlier, with a modest offering? Federico Michetti, head of sports activities and product manager at Nautor Swan, explains, “The concept of the 28 is to have an entry-level Swan that allows owners to enjoy the journey with Nautor and our events.” He expects that the 28 will entice younger sailors, even those new to sailing, into the ClubSwan realm.

Nautor Swan rendering

Among race boats today, 28 to 30 feet is the cusp between sportboat and yacht, and the ClubSwan 28 is more the former, given its light weight (displacing sub-1,200 kg versus 1,600 kg and 1,800 for the more yachtlike Farr 280 and Cape 31, respectively); outboard engine rather than inboard; and low freeboard and minimal interior, accessed via the foredeck hatch. The ClubSwan 28 is neither an excessively high-end carbon race boat nor a high-volume J/70, but rather somewhere between. “Our aim for it is to race well in 6 knots or 20. It is a powerful boat but not extreme,” Michetti says.

Kouyoumdjian adds: “We incorporated everything that modern boats have to perform very well but didn’t go extreme on any of them.”

Fundamental to the boat’s ethos is simplicity, and for it to be fun to sail, but as Michetti puts it, “at the same time being safe, a boat that can fit the needs of everyone from beginner to expert.”

Aside from its performance, the best demonstration of this is that while most sportboat crews must hike and hike hard (it being so vital to stability on boats of this size), the 28 is a “legs-in” boat.

“We would like to avoid a hiking contest. It is much more social too; sailors can enjoy what is happening around them,” Michetti says. Everything is optimized for this—the sheerline and cockpit arrangement to make maximum use of the weight of the inward-facing crew, while keel draft and ballast make up righting moment lost due to no hiking and crew not moving fore and aft.

ClubSwan 28 cockpit

Compared with the ClubSwan 36’s advanced hull shape and fixed-keel/C-foil combination, the 28 is far more conservative. The hull has a low wetted surface area and rocker aft to minimize bow burying. Its modest 8-foot beam means it can be towed legally throughout Europe without having to be inclined. It also allows the boat and trailer combined to fit into a 40HQ container for shipping farther afield.

The hull shape is quite complex, with flared topsides at the stern, above a substantial chine. Going forward, the topsides turn vertical and then evolve into a deck chamfer forward of the mast. The bow has a slight reverse sheer and a retractable sprit.

The rig breaks new ground, but again, simplicity is the focus. Developed between Kouyoumdjian, Southern Spars’ Steve Wilson and mast-builder Axxon Composites, it is skifflike, with no backstay or runners, and with swept-back spreaders and a GNAV (inverted vang) to keep the cockpit clear. “Imagine a 49er rig that is set up by the headstay,” Kouyoumdjian says. “The prebend and the tension you have in that kind of rig usually comes from presetting the headstay and then you deal with it with the vang and cunningham. But we wanted something variable that could simulate what you could otherwise do with the runners.”

Nautor Swan rendering

The solution is to have a permanently attached mast ram that can be operated while racing via a pump in the pit area. “It brings a lot of things together—not only the tension on the headstay, but also the tension on the rig,” Kouyoumdjian adds. “And when you tension the rig, you bend the mast.”

Therefore, powering up the rig comes with just two or three pumps and an inch of movement of the ram. “Everything on the rig is simple and has been done before many times successfully,” Kouyoumdjian says. “We added the mast up-and-down function. I imagine crews using it on medium-light days: When you get into a luff and you’d ease the runner, instead you’d drop the mast, or anticipating a puff, you’d pump it up. As soon as the wind gets to 10 to 12 knots, then you’d be maxed up, like you would be at maximum runner on a typical boat.”

The ClubSwan 28 will be a strict one-design class. Like the ClubSwan 36, it is being built in Cartagena, Spain, by Sinergia Racing Group. Tooling for the 28 is CNC milled to fine tolerances, and like most other boats in this size, it is a glass boat, built with vinylester resin, although naturally its mast, bowsprit and rudder are full carbon. The keel fin is stainless steel.

ClubSwan 28

What appears to be a 1990s retro feature is the 28’s L-configuration keel, as featured on many vintage 1990 one-designs and early VO60s. Aside from positioning bulb weight aft, this lengthens the keel’s leading edge by 15 to 20 percent, increasing its efficiency and improving, for example, lift to windward. Kouyoumdjian is enthusiastic about this and says that he would readily recommend L-keels on other race boats, but warns that the shape of the bulb’s front must be correct. To enable easy trailering, the keel can be raised, and the rudder assembly lifts out within its own box. A full derig, from water to motorway, is expected to take around three hours.

Production for the ClubSwan 28 will be modest, initially at least, with the yard in Cartagena expected to roll out two per month, with the ready-to-sail price forecast to be around 200,000 euros. The aim is to have international fleets, with boats built by local yards. After Europe, Michetti says, its focus will be the United States, although as yet there is no time frame for this. At the time of this writing, six 28s had been sold, with the first boat due for launch in late May, with all six expected to compete at the Rolex Swan Cup in Porto Cervo in September.

The advantage of the 28 is that the owner is buying into the ClubSwan world, with its established circuit, Michetti says. “If you are building a new class, people need to trust you. You need to create momentum, you need to have sponsors and find locations and organize regattas,” which the ClubSwan management already has, with its comprehensive circuit, mixing established regattas and ClubSwan’s own in the Med, UK, Baltic and US. Aside from enticing new sailors and teams into the ClubSwan family, Michetti also imagines that some teams with larger race boats might acquire a 28 for crew training.

Nautor Swan rendering

There is currently no class crew-weight limit, which risks enticing larger muscle-bound types on board, but Michetti explains: “We want to avoid this crazy ‘saunas before the regatta’ thing” (in other classes, crews typically duck just below maximum weight at weigh-in). ClubSwan 28 crews will comprise four or five with a World Sailing Group 1 (amateur) owner-driver and probably one mandatory female or youth crewmember.

For the 28 this year, there are a number of events, including a kick-off event from Nautor Swan’s base in Scarlino, Italy, in July, plus September’s Rolex Swan Cup and the Nations League 2024-ClubSwan 28 Invitational Sardinia Challenge, taking place in Villasimius, Sardinia, in early November. Given its trailerability, the likelihood is that the 28 will also race inland, for example, on Italy’s famous Lake Garda. Naturally, as numbers grow, there will also be the opportunity for the ClubSwan 28 to get its own start in the world’s top multiclass regattas.

Swan Boat Club crash pre-trial • Trump Michigan visit investigation • No charges in baby's fentanyl death

Mckenzie cochran trial continues friday.

The defense could call its final witness in the McKenzie Cochran trial on Friday. The 25-year-old died after being restrained by security guards at Northland Mall. Those guards are now charged with involuntary manslaughter.

FRIDAY NEWS HIT - The defense is expected to call its final witness today as the trial stemming from the 2014 death of McKenzie Cochran at Northland Mall continues.

Closing arguments could also come today.

John Seiberling, Gaven King, and Aaron Maree were charged with involuntary manslaughter after the 2014 death was reviewed years later. A fourth guard charged with the death, Lucius Hamilton, pleaded guilty, and a fifth guard died before charges were filed.

According to Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, Cochran, 25, of Ferndale, allegedly told the owner of a jewelry store at the Southfield mall that "he wanted to kill someone" on Jan. 28, 2014.

Two security guards responded to the store after the owner called for security assistance. When Cochran approached the guards with clenched fists, one guard maced him and both attempted to restrain him to the ground. Three additional security guards responded and took part in the restraint in order to handcuff Cochran, authorities said.

Video showed that Cochran remained face down with his arms under his body while the five security guards restrained him. Witnesses at the mall, and subsequent interviews with the guards involved, reported hearing Cochran say he couldn’t breathe while he was on the ground.

Charges were brought after the case was reviewed in 2020.

Marshella Chidester pre-trial

Marshella Chidester, the woman who authorities say was drunk when she slammed into the Swan Boat Club in Monroe and killed two children earlier this year, appeared in court Friday.

During that hearing, her next court date was set for Oct. 18. A judge granted her attorney three weeks to file motions regarding experts and witnesses he would like to call during trial. The prosecution has four weeks to respond.

Chidester, 66, was bound over for trial in June for the April 20 crash that killed 8-year-old Alanah Phillips and 5-year-old Zayn Phillips and left more than a dozen other people hurt.

She is charged with two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of operating while intoxicated causing death, and four counts of operating while intoxicated causing serious injury. Her blood alcohol level was .18, more than double the legal limit in Michigan, according to blood test results read during a preliminary exam.

Though evidence showed she was drunk, her attorney Bill Colovos argued that she shouldn't be charged with second-degree murder because she didn't intend to kill anyone.

"There was no intent by my client whatsoever," he said during the prelim.

Michigan Bureau of Elections investigates Trump visit

The Michigan Bureau of Elections is formally looking into two complaints made against the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, alleging possible misuse of public resources to support political candidates – a misdemeanor that is punishable by fines or up to 93 days in jail.

The complaints accused the sheriff's office of violating the Michigan Campaign Finance Act.

Former President Donald Trump held a press conference in Howell that was closed to the public but nationally televised. He was joined by local law enforcement officials, including Howell Chief Michael Dunn and Sheriff Michael Murphy at the Livingston County Sheriff's storage facility. Though it was advertised as a press conference, it has been argued by critics that it was a campaign stop.

"We’re going to take this country, we are going to make it safe again, and we’re going to make America great again," Trump said during his speech, framed by a backdrop of police brass and vehicles.

The event with Trump reportedly led to the closure of several county offices, including courts and the prosecutor's office. Murphy responded to the allegations on Thursday, telling FOX 2 by phone that no deputies were removed from their duties to participate in the event.

Additionally, Murphy said that the arrangement for the press conference was initiated by the Trump campaign, and that the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office would equally accommodate Democratic presidential nominee and Vice President Kamala Harris if requested.

No charges in baby's fentanyl death

One year after Prentesis Keleo Goode, 1, died of a fentanyl overdose in Detroit, his father Donnell Holmes continues to grieve the loss.

There's anger mixed in with that grief after the prosecutor's office declined to issue charges against whomever allowed the child to access the drug due to a lack of evidence.

"I’m just not understanding what the problem is with this case, it’s just being swept under the rug," Holmes said. "And the excuse they gave me was there were two adults in the house and both of them are going to say ‘I didn’t do it’ and nowhere in the world does that make sense."

Though the prosecutor's office says it does not have the evidence, Holmes claims.

"They have enough evidence," Holmes said. "He was there with his mother, and if they didn’t find any fentanyl in the house, it was there in my son."

Holmes has gone to victim advocates, even the American Bar Association — but with no results. He feels he’s exhausted all options — but he won’t give up.

"Kym Worthy, I think you dropped the ball on this one," he said. "Please look at this case again, because my son’s case deserves justice."

The ‘black swan’ sinking of the bayesian.

The storm-related sinking on Monday, August 20, 2024, off the northern coast of Sicily of the British-flagged superyacht the Bayesian has been called a “black swan” event. What does that term mean, and why is it being used now given that oceanic storms are common?

The term was coined by Dutch explorer Willem de Vlamingh who, in 1697, was surprised to find darkly plumed swans in Australia. At the time, Europeans thought all swans were white. Originally signifying any startling statistical improbability , Vlamingh’s term took on darker meaning when, in 1921, economist Nassim Nicholas Taleb used it in reference to unlikely and unanticipated financial calamities. The meaning of “black swan” continued to generalize, and today it’s being used in reference to the Bayesian tragedy. According to the New York Times and the Independent , twenty-two people were onboard the superyacht when it sank. Twelve were crew members. The remaining were celebrating a recent court victory of British tech mogul Mike Lynch, who had been accused of fraud when he sold his company to Hewlett Packard for $11 billion.

Fifteen people — including a mother and her one-year-old baby — survived by swimming to a raft. The body of the onboard chef Ricardo Thomas was found early in the search for survivors. Since then, CNN reports that the bodies of five of the following six people have been found: Mike Lynch; Lynch’s daughter Hannah; Morgan Stanley International director Jonathan Bloomer; Bloomer’s wife, Judy; Lynch’s lawyer Chris Morvillo; and Morvillo’s wife, Neda. No names other than that of Thomas have been released.

While no official pronouncement about cause has been made, media are widely reporting that the Bayesian’s “black swan” event seems likely to have been a waterspout. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), waterspouts are ocean- or lake-based tornadoes that can originate either in storm clouds, in which case they descend to the water, or in the water, in which case they ascend to the clouds. Indeed, the New York Times has reported that a few early morning fishermen saw a waterspout over the yacht. Even so, no certainty is at hand. According to the Times , speculations include the possibility that lightning from the storm struck the yacht’s tall aluminum mast and caused a catastrophic shock that defeated electrical systems and sank the boat. Regardless of how the storm sank the ship, CNN has reported that a villa owner on shore reviewed CCTV security footage from his home and said that it took fewer than 60 seconds for the ship go to down.

Tornadoes aren’t unusual — certainly not in the United States, which has more than any other country. (NOAA pegs the number of reported tornadoes in the United States in 2022 at 1,329. Most occurred in “tornado alley” or, more specifically, all or parts of Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas, North Dakota, Montana, Ohio, Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming, and New York.) Tornadoes and waterspouts may not be as common elsewhere in the world, but they’re not unusual in countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. Quoting AtmosphericG2 , a company that provides historical and forecast weather data to traders, Bloomberg.com reports that about 100 tornadoes a year strike Italy. Seventy percent are waterspouts.

Will Beyoncé Perform At DNC’s Final Night? Conflicting Reports After TMZ Says She’ll Appear.

Will beyoncé perform at dnc tonight here’s what we know as rumors swirl., nyt ‘strands’ hints, spangram and answers for friday, august 23rd.

Given that tornadoes and waterspouts are not startling statistical improbabilities for Italy, why would a waterspout sinking a superyacht off the shore of Sicily be considered a “black swan?”

Granted, it’s a catchy term for a tornado forming without warning immediately over a superyacht carrying principal players from a lawsuit only recently in the news. “Black swan” sounds about right — but only if the waterspout formed almost miraculously over the boat, did its deadly business with astonishing speed, and disappeared. We may eventually learn that that’s what happened.

Meanwhile, the storm pattern over Italy continues. MSN.com is reporting that storm alerts are in place in “Emilia-Romagna, Marche, Umbria, Abruzzo, Molise, Campania, Basilicata, Puglia, Calabria and part of Sicily.”

Mike Lynch’s Sunken Superyacht Is Largely Intact, Italian Officials Say

I talian investigators searching the wreckage of the Bayesian superyacht said it appeared largely intact, a discovery that contradicts earlier eyewitnesses who said its mast had snapped when it sank in Monday’s storm.

Divers are reporting that the 180-foot-long yacht was lying on its side on the ocean floor, an Italian coast guard official said Wednesday. “The divers are looking for structural damage on the hull,” the official said.

The early reports from Italian officials appeared to be at odds with witnesses who had said the aluminum mast snapped during a violent thunderstorm when the vessel sank off the coast of Sicily with 22 people on board, including owner Mike Lynch, a U.K. tech billionaire.

The towering mast on the Bayesian stretched nearly 240 feet into the sky—making the superyacht the tallest luxury sailboat when it was built.

Maritime experts said a broken mast of that height could cause serious damage to a vessel, but the design isn’t a safety concern as long as the masts are well maintained and held tightly upright on the hull by cables called stays.

“Bigger masts support bigger sails and higher sailing speeds,” said Takis Tsakos, a veteran captain who also oversees for clients the construction of superyachts such as the Bayesian at yards in Europe and the U.S. “The yacht fans love the bigger masts because they look marvelous and give the vessel more volume. They are especially impressive at night when they are lit up.”

The Bayesian’s mast could have fallen on the hull, damaging it, or could have been uprooted from its base by the strong winds if the stays weren’t tight enough. Yacht captains say loose stays can make a boat tilt as much as 15 degrees even with the sails folded.

“That would have made a gaping hole and water could have rushed in. It was also a relaxed evening—doors and windows could have been open with more water coming in as the boat tilted,” said Tsakos, founder of Athens-based Yachtways GP, which rents out luxury yachts in the Mediterranean. “These will be determined when the yacht is pulled out of the water.”

The people missing and presumed dead in the sinking of the Bayesian include Lynch, his daughter, a top executive at Morgan Stanley and one of Lynch’s lawyers. The group was celebrating Lynch’s acquittal on U.S. fraud charges.

Italian authorities are continuing to investigate the accident and divers are trying to access the sunken hull. Rescue teams located five bodies from the wreck on Wednesday. The body of the boat’s chef was retrieved from the sea on Tuesday.

Masts must meet the safety standards of classification societies that give the green light for a ship to sail and monitor its maintenance over the years. Oversize masts on superyachts are turned by computer so they face the wind straight on and not sideways even when the sails are folded.

“For a vessel of this size to go down, there must have been tremendous ingress of water inside its enclosed spaces,” said Fotis Pagoulatos, a naval architect who has participated in a number of shipwreck investigations. “Its design allows it to stay afloat, even with two compartments flooded.” He said he wouldn’t be surprised if the yacht’s hull is found cracked and buckled from the forces exerted by the freak weather and possibly the cracked mast.

The single-masted Bayesian was built by Italian company Perini Navi and delivered in 2008 to its original owner. The boat, which was taller than it was long, was one of a class of supersize luxury yachts that cruise the Mediterranean and other hot spots.

Formerly known as Salute, it was one of several that Perini Navi built that was 56 meters long. But its sister ships had shorter masts—generally extending 59 meters, compared with about 72 meters for the Bayesian. Perini Navi didn’t return requests for comment.

The Bayesian has been eclipsed by newer boats owned by other billionaires. Jeff Bezos, the Amazon.com founder, commissioned the 127-meter-tall Koru, a three-masted vessel that was delivered in 2023.

The Koru was so tall that in 2022 it sparked a protest over plans to dismantle a bridge to let it sail out of the Dutch port where it was built. Instead, the ship was towed to another shipyard to have its masts mounted.

Still, the Bayesian remained one of the largest private sailing yachts. It was ordered by a Dutch businessman but, in 2005, he was paralyzed in a yachting accident and it was sold on completion to another Dutch owner and renamed Salute, according to yacht brokers.

In 2014, it was sold to an entity owned by Angela Bacares, Lynch’s wife, and renamed Bayesian. It has no racing history, but boats of this size compete in events such as the St Barths Bucket Regatta, an annual race in the Caribbean, and in the Perini Navi Cup, a four-day race near Sardinia.

Perini Navi is known for creating some of the world’s most famous and luxurious sailing yachts, including the 88-meter-long Maltese Falcon, one of the world’s most recognizable sailing yachts, with rotating masts and a futuristic design.

The masts of the Maltese Falcon are 57 meters tall.

Mike Lynch’s Sunken Superyacht Is Largely Intact, Italian Officials Say

Experts puzzle over why Bayesian yacht sank. Was it a 'black swan event'?

Portrait of Cybele Mayes-Osterman

The Bayesian set off on a leisurely cruise around Italy's southern coast on a sunny day in late July.

The luxurious super yacht − which boasted one of the largest masts in the world and carried a crew of business moguls, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his family and a chair of Morgan Stanley − set sail from the Amalfi Coast, bound for Sicily.

Less than a month later, the ship had sunk 160 feet under the water , leaving its cook dead and six of its passengers, including at least two Americans, missing and prompting a massive search that has drawn international attention.

Now, experts are trying to piece together why in the early hours Monday the Bayesian was quickly pulled under the waves amid a storm that saw at least one tornado spin up over the water.

A perfect storm led to Bayesian sinking, experts say

The combination of unlikely factors that could have contributed to the ship's fate constituted a "black swan event," Matthew Schanck, chairman of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, told USA TODAY.

The Bayesian was well-built: A 2008 product of Italian ship maker Perini, it was constructed in accordance with international maritime standards and commercially certified by the U.K.'s Maritime and Coastguard Agency, according to Schanck.

The bout of bad weather that swept the area when the ship went down was also out of the ordinary in the northern Mediterranean, "which isn't renowned for prolonged, significant stormy weather," he said.

"The fact that those two elements have then resulted in the foundering of a super yacht is pretty extraordinary," Schanck said. "These things don't happen every day."

After the ship sank just before 5 a.m. local time, 15 people, including a 1-year-old, were pulled from the water. Some were rescued from a life raft by the crew of a ship docked nearby.

Ricardo Thomas, the ship's cook and a native of Antigua, was found dead, according to authorities.

As of Tuesday, six people were missing, including Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter. Several missing passengers were involved in Lynch's trial on fraud charges, including Jonathan Bloomer, a Morgan Stanley chair who served as his character witness, and one of Lynch's attorneys. Lynch, accused of fraud after he sold his company to electronics giant Hewlett-Packard, was acquitted of all charges weeks ago.

Tornado formed over unusually hot water

Storms in the area that night may have whipped up a water spout, a tornado over the water , according to local meteorologists.

It was likely triggered by the water's unusual warmth, said Rick Shema, a certified consulting meteorologist who served in the Navy.

"The water spout was an uncommon occurrence," he said. "But again, these things happen, especially in warmer water."

At 83.7 degrees, water in the area was more than 3 degrees hotter than average on the day the Bayesian sank, likely the result of climate change, Shema said.

"Hurricanes can form at 80 degrees. This was almost four degrees higher than that," he said.

The water spout may have spun up when cooler air dropped from mountainous places nearby onto the hot water, he said. "A water spout is a vortex, basically like a tornado, spinning real fast, sucking up water and moisture as the column rises," he said.

Although water spouts only reach around 120 mph, as compared with tornadoes on land, which can reach up to 300 mph, "you don't need 200 mph to sink a ship," he said.

"Even an average tornado, 120 miles an hour, that's a lot of wind," he said, "which would heel the boat over for sure."

Water spouts spring up suddenly, Shema said. Before they strike, winds can be slow, but "once the water spout comes over, bam, it's on," he said.

Before sunrise, the ship's crew may not have seen the water spout coming. "The visibility was probably a big factor," he said.

With the windows of the yacht opened, as they likely were in the hot weather, the water spout could have triggered water that flooded through the portholes, Shema said, causing the ship to sink.

Tragedy strikes: Scramble to find survivors after Bayesian yacht sinks off Sicily coast

Search continues, but shift to recovery phase approaches

Italian authorities said the Bayesian was probably at anchor when the storm struck, meaning it couldn't maneuver and ride the waves, according to Mitchell Stoller, a captain and maritime expert witness. Other ships in the area that turned on their engines rode out the storm, he said.

"When you're at anchor and you see weather, you start your engine and you put the wind on the bow. You don't let it get on the side," he said.

Schanck said another key question concerns the position of the keel, a heavy weight underneath the boat that acts as a counterbalance to keep it upright, when the ship sank. When lifted, "that's going to affect the stability of the vessel, because, obviously, you've now raised the center of gravity of that vessel," he said.

The Bayesian was floating over 160 feet of water at the time, deep enough that the keel would likely be deployed. But the fact that "the vessel heeled over so heavily makes me question that," Schanck said.

The cause of the disaster may not be known until the ship can be examined in more detail, experts say. Prosecutors in a nearby town have already opened an investigation.

Schanck said investigators will have plenty to work with once the operation moves into a recovery phase.

"The vessel is intact and in good condition on the seabed," he said. "There's a lot of eyewitness accounts from other vessels in the area and the shore."

As the search entered its second day on Tuesday, the rescue effort may shift in that direction soon. "I suspect, later on, today or tomorrow, we'll probably see some mention of a recovery operation being stated," Schanck said.

The decision to would depend on whether rescuers find signs of life in the ship and air pockets or survivable spaces, Schanck said. At this point, survivors on the water's surface looks unlikely. "My professional opinion is that the casualties will be located within the vessel," he said.

"There is a risk versus benefit in all maritime search and rescue incidents," he said. "Where we start transitioning to a recovery phase, that line shifts."

  • Italian authorities are expected to reveal further information about their investigation tomorrow morning in a news conference.

Italian authorities are expected to reveal further information about their investigation tomorrow in a news conference.

Prosecutors in the town of Termini Imerese, near where the Bayesian superyacht went down, will begin the news conference at 9am UK time.

Search and rescue teams finished their task of searching for those uncounted for from the Bayesian's sinking today.

Divers have spent all week searching the shipwreck, looking for six people missing after the vessel foundered on Monday morning.

Of those six, all but one had been found by this morning. At around 11am UK time, the final body, believed to be that of 18-year-old Hannah Lynch, was discovered.

It was brought to shore shortly after, signalling an end to five days of intense search operations.

Below, we have a look at some images from the operation today as it unfolded:

The speed at which the Bayesian sunk is "puzzling" and testimony from the crew will be "absolutely fundamental" in understanding how it happened, says the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Sailing Technology.

Dr Jean-Baptise Souppez, an expert in mechanical, biomedical and design engineering, told Sky News a vessel like the Bayesian "shouldn't sink that fast".

"For a ship that size to go down in a matter of minutes is particularly puzzling," he said.

"I think it's important to remember that all these vessels are built to very strong rules and regulations. And one of the reasons this is so puzzling is because those rules should ensure that this doesn't happen."

Investigations into the ship's foundering are already beginning to get underway, where the evidence supplied by survivors will be crucial, according to Dr Souppez.

"A lot of the job will be to try to establish a timeline of what happened prior to the events, in terms of the storm warning and what measures were taken on the vessel," he adds.

"What happened during the crucial minute? From the moment the ship started to lean on its side up until it sank. For this, the accounts from the survivors and the crew will be absolutely fundamental.

"But it will also be a lot of physical evidence from the wreck that the divers have been able to collect, and more that they will be able to observe in the future."

A maritime investigator says the first priority of the Bayesian's crew would likely have been to prepare the ship for the oncoming storm, rather than wake all sleeping passengers.

James Wilkes said the watchkeeper on the yacht "might have considered" waking captain James Cutfield, who he "imagines would have been asleep" at the time.

"He would go down, wake him up, explain what he's got," Mr Wilkes told Sky News.

"The master then would take over. He would make the decisions about raising the rest of the crew, if they're going to lift the anchor and start the engines, motor the vessel out pointed into the weather, that would require all the crew.

"And I should imagine they would have also briefed some or all of the passengers. But their first priority would have been to get the vessel ready to take on the weather that was approaching."

Mr Wilkes added that those steps were likely taken but "by the sounds of it", the Bayesian was overwhelmed by the weather incredibly quickly.

British technology tycoon Mike Lynch was among the people who died following the sinking of the Bayesian superyacht on Monday morning.

The vessel had arrived off the coast of Sicily on Sunday, remaining at anchor 500m from the port of Porticello overnight.

At around 3.50am local time, a violent storm sent chairs and tables into the wind on the shore, while a mini-tornado known as a waterspout is believed to have ripped through the Bayesian.

Fifteen passengers and crew members made it onto a life raft and were picked up by a nearby boat, with seven people unaccounted for from the initial 22 on the ship's manifest.

All seven were found and recovered over the following days. They are believed to be:

Divers confirmed the entrepreneur's body had been recovered yesterday.

Dubbed the "British Bill Gates", Mr Lynch has been in the headlines in recent months over a high-profile fraud case related to the £8.64bn sale of his company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard (HP) in 2011.

HP accused him of deliberately overstating the value of the company before it was acquired by the American technology firm. Mr Lynch denied any wrongdoing. In June, a US jury  cleared him of all charges .

Hannah Lynch

Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter was also on board. A body believed to be that of the teenager was found and recovered from the wreckage today.

She had been on holiday with her parents, having secured a place to study English at the University of Oxford.

Her older sister, Esme Lynch, said her younger sibling was "endlessly caring, passionately mad, unintentionally hilarious and the most amazing, supportive and joyful sister and best friend to me".

Chris Morvillo

US lawyer Chris Morvillo was among those found dead by divers yesterday.

The father-of-two worked on Mr Lynch's US fraud trial and was a partner of law firm Clifford Chance's US branch.

He was also assistant attorney for the Southern District of New York between 1995 and 2005 and worked on the terrorist investigation into the 9/11 attacks.

Neda Morvillo

Mr Morvillo's wife Neda died in the disaster alongside her husband.

The 57-year-old had a luxury jewellery brand, which she ran under her maiden name Neda Nassiri.

Recaldo Thomas

The yacht's on-board chef Recaldo Thomas died in the sinking. He was Canadian-Antiguan and part of the crew of the Bayesian.

His body was the first to be recovered from the wreckage.

Jonathan Bloomer

Jonathan Bloomer, the chairman of investment bank Morgan Stanley International, was confirmed dead yesterday.

According to the Financial Times, Mr Bloomer appeared as a defence witness for Mr Lynch during his US criminal trial, and the pair were good friends. He also chaired Autonomy's audit committee.

The 70-year-old was the chief executive of UK-Hong Kong insurer Prudential until he was ousted by the board in 2005.

He was also chairman of the insurance provider Hiscox.

Judy Bloomer

Mr Bloomer's wife Judy was on the yacht trip with her husband. Divers confirmed they found her body yesterday.

Mrs Bloomer was a former board member at The Eve Appeal charity, which focuses on gynaecological cancers.

The charity described her as a "brilliant champion for women's health and medical research... an incredible supporter, committee member, and trustee of our charity for over 20 years".

More tributes have come in now for Mike Lynch, whose body was recovered from the Bayesian yesterday.

Close friend of the Lynch family Albert Read called him "warm, funny, brilliant, loyal and exceptionally brave".

"I've never met anyone like Mike - a searing intellect, a steel that would transform the world around him, an instinct for family and friends - organising children's treasure hunts, big gatherings of neighbours in Suffolk.

"And, with Angela, a determination to light up the worlds of art and science for his two beloved daughters.

"Warm, funny, brilliant, loyal and exceptionally brave, with a heart as big as his brain."

The final body has now been retrieved from the wreckage of the Bayesian, leaving every person accounted for who was on the ship at the time of its foundering.

The captain of the yacht, 51-year-old James Cutfield, has reportedly already been questioned by Italian authorities for two hours.

He managed to survive the sinking along with 14 other passengers and crew members - including Mike Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares.

Mr Cutfield previously told Italian media "we didn't see it coming" when asked about the extreme weather that sunk the vessel.

His brother Mark said he was a "well respected" mariner who had captained luxury yachts for eight years and previously worked for a Turkish billionaire.

He told the New Zealand Herald he'd been involved in building yachts for 30 years and also raced dinghies competitively in his youth.

A maritime investigator says it is "unfair" to start blaming the crew of the Bayesian for its sinking.

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, which owns a firm which makes and sells vessels like Mike Lynch's sunken superyacht, told Sky News they "are absolutely safe", suggesting human error was behind the boat going down.

He said the "event" that capsized the British-flagged luxury yacht Bayesian off the coast of Porticello, Sicily, on Monday "could have been managed with an average amount of attention".

No official cause has been given for why the boat sank and James Wilkes, a marine investigator, says it's "premature" to start casting blame around before the facts are established.

"It's not uncommon to blame seafarers and the crew when a vessel has suffered a casualty of this magnitude," he tells Sky News.

"There were a lot of people who are understandably upset about this incident. And of course, the builders of this vessel potentially have their reputations on the line, their brand on the line.

"You can imagine why they would be so forceful in their assertions and speculation at the moment.

"But no, I don't think it's fair right now to jump to the conclusion that the crew must have done something wrong, because we simply do not know that as a matter of fact."

He added: "None of us were there at the time when it happened, it was only those 15 survivors on board who can tell us what happened.

"They were undoubtedly doing what they possibly could to keep that ship and the passengers safe.

"So, I think at the moment we should wait to find out what the statements of the witnesses are, and then we can draw conclusions from that point forward.

"It is definitely premature to start casting blame and spreading  aspersions around like that."

Hannah Lynch's older sister, Esme Lynch, has paid tribute to her late sibling after her body was recovered from the wreckage of the Bayesian.

The 18-year-old, who was due to start studying English at Oxford University next month, was the last person rescue divers were searching for in the wreckage.

Esme's statement says: "Hannah often burst into my bedroom and lay down with me.

"Sometimes beaming with a smile, sometimes cheeky, sometimes for advice. No matter what, she brought boundless love to me.

"She was endlessly caring, passionately mad, unintentionally hilarious and the most amazing, supportive and joyful sister and best friend to me.

"And on top of all this, she had even more love to give endlessly to all her friends and passion to give to her incredible studies and goals.

"She is my little angel, my star."

Earliest known shipwreck uncovered in Perth's Swan River identified

By Kate Leaver

ABC Radio Perth

Topic: Archaeology

Maritime archaeologists have identified the Swan River's earliest known shipwreck, a cargo barge that sunk in a storm in 1882.

The vessel used to carry stone throughout the Swan River Colony.

What's next?

WA Museum researchers will continue to search for wrecks in the Swan River this summer with a series of exploratory dives planned.

Maritime archaeologists have identified the earliest known shipwreck in the Swan River, a cargo barge wrecked in an 1882 storm, which is providing a glimpse into life in 19th-century Perth.

Patrick Morrison, a maritime archaeologist at the WA Museum discovered the "well-preserved" wreck 14 metres below the surface near Point Walter last year with two colleagues using detailed 3D maps of the riverbed.

"We were going through some sonar data that had been released by the state government and you can see a lot of these lumps and bumps on the bottom of the Swan River, where it's otherwise pretty featureless," he told Nadia Mitsopoulos on ABC Radio Perth.

"Personally, it's very significant, but historically it's interesting because it's the oldest-known wreck now in the Swan River.

"It gives us a really good insight, because it's so well preserved, into how people constructed ships, the ship's fittings that were used, it gives us an insight into the lives of people on those ships and how they lived there."

WA Museum archaeologist Ross Anderson said the 23-metre-long barge was used to carry limestone and other building materials from quarries in Fremantle and Rocky Bay.

"Most of the stone, if you live in a stone building in Perth, and the south and north moles of the harbour, are all built out of the stone from Rocky Bay," Dr Anderson said.

"They were quarried for over 100 years, between the 1850s and 1960s."

Swan River was used as 'major river highway'

Mr Morrison said newspaper clippings from the time indicated the barge was owned by Alfred Dearden, who had a contract to supply stone to the government to build roads around the Perth railway station.

"The river [was] a bit like the Kwinana Freeway now. It was the main highway of the city and even going up to Guildford for the agricultural produce, but they would just go up and down between mainly Fremantle and Perth," he said.

"There were lots of these barges and they would be sailed sometimes or towed.

"This particular one was being towed by a steamship, a little steamer towing it up and down with their big heavy cargo."

Storm hit barge, two men 'narrowly' escape

Dr Anderson said records showed two men narrowly escaped when rough weather ravaged the barge.

"It gets pretty rough on the river, it gets stormy and choppy on these barges and they're not designed as seagoing vessels," he said.

"So it can get pretty nasty on the river, as people probably know if they've been sailing out there, and that looks like that's what's happened.

"[These men] survived with their lives intact, luckily."

Well-preserved wreck's 'Pompeii moment'

While the team of WA Museum researchers will preserve a ceramic demijohn — a type of flagon used for holding wine — the wreck will remain on the riverbed.

"It is particularly significant and rare to find something that's intact archaeologically, like a little Pompeii moment, if you like, this disaster that's just encapsulated in the bottom of the river," he said.

The ceramic demijohn with text 'J&W Bateman Wine and Spirit Merchants, Fremantle' will be preserved by WA Museum.

"The best place to preserve [wrecks] is buried in the mud at the bottom of the river."

Explore the wreck, but don't anchor on it

Because the wreck is now protected under Western Australia's Maritime Archaeology Act, it is an offence to anchor on, remove, or damage items from it.

But the public is free to dive and explore the wreck.

"People can dive it, there's no restrictions on that, other than they're not allowed to take anything from the wreck or damage it," Dr Anderson said.

"The big threat to the site is if anchor and anchor chain starts getting wrapped around the frames and pulling them out.

"The only way to preserve heritage is for people to understand it and appreciate it and value it and experience it for themselves."

Breaking news, ‘black swan’ weather phenomenon may have sunk bayesian yacht, experts say.

A rare and unexpected “black swan” weather event may have led to the Bayesian superyacht’s speedy demise , maritime experts claim.

The spontaneous formation of a tornado-like waterspout would have given the 22 passengers and crew aboard the luxury vessel little to no time to react to the violent storm Monday before the ship capsized and sank, killing one and leaving six others missing.

Marine experts believe the large waterspout — a slim column of spinning air below a thunderstorm that occurs over water — was a “black swan event” or a weather phenomenon characterized by its extreme rarity and severe impact, similar to Hurricane Katrina in 2005, they told the Times UK.

tornado

“That water carries significant weight,” Matthew Schanck, chairman of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, told the Times. “And if the waterspout ends up dumping a load of that water on board the vessel, that’s going to cause significant damage.”

The Bayesian is believed to have sunk within minutes after being struck by the early morning storm. Six people, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and top New York City lawyer Christopher Morvillo, remained missing Wednesday as Italian officials investigate the ship’s sudden sinking.

One expert, Andrea Ratti, a nautical design professor at Milan Polytechnic University, suggested the ship may have sunk so quickly because its windows, portholes or other openings may have been broken or smashed open by the powerful waterspout, allowing the vessel to quickly fill and sink.

However, a UK industry expert said sinking a ship of that size should have taken hours.

boat

“I don’t think the industry has ever faced anything like this. It’s a horror story,” the unnamed expert declared.

Meteorologists told the outlet the weather conditions that led to the ship’s demise were consistent with a waterspout and that a lot of unpredictability comes with tornado warnings.

“There was a big thunderstorm just to the north of Sicily, a lot of lightning activity, lot of heavy rain, very strong signature of what we call ‘cold cloud tops’ on the satellite pictures. All of those things would add up to a thunderstorm that could easily spawn a waterspout,” said Dr. Pete Inness, a meteorology lecturer at the University of Reading in Berkshire, UK.

yacht

Inness noted that with tornado warnings, officials can estimate when and where they will happen, but until one forms, they don’t know all the details, including how strong they will be.

Additionally, like tornadoes, waterspouts are short-lived weather events that go undetected on radars. Along with the fact that it was dark out during the storm, it would’ve been difficult for the crew to realize what was happening, Inness said.

There were 18 confirmed waterspouts off the coast of Italy on Aug. 19, according to the International Center for Waterspout Research.

56-metre sailboat 'Bayesian' sunk in a violent storm off Palermo, Italy on August 19, 2024

Other experts questioned why the crew wasn’t paying closer attention to various weather warnings ahead of the tragedy.

“I don’t know if there was anyone on board consulting the radar. Let’s say that if I had been on board, at the first sign of a thunderstorm, I would have woken up all the occupants and been ready and alert with lifejackets on until the storm was over,” one of Italy’s leading climate experts, Luca Mercalli, told the outlet.

Even if they had been paying closer attention, it was unlikely the crew could have been prepared for such a “high impact, low probability” weather event, Schanck added.

Rescue workers and divers from the Italian fire brigade conducting a search operation for missing people from the Bayesian shipwreck in Porticello, Sicily, Italy, on August 20, 2024.

“I’ve reviewed the forecasts. There was nothing other than thunder. There was nothing that jumped out to me that made it a dangerous decision to anchor there,” he said.

The experts also squashed a theory shared by American entrepreneur Scott Painter , who suggested the ship’s 240-foot-tall mast — the tallest of its kind — may have made the vessel more vulnerable in the powerful weather event.

One rescue diver told Italian media the yacht was “practically intact” underwater, and Tom Sharpe, a former Royal Navy commander, said the idea that the mast would make the ship unstable was “just incorrect.”

“That mast is designed to have a massive sail hanging off it. So on its own with no sail, that’s not what has caused the boat to go over.”

An official investigation into the incident will likely take months, prosecutors in Sicily said.

The new Swan 80 has been designed by the renowned naval architect Germán Frers creating the overall concept, with naval architect Lucio Micheletti the exterior  and Misa Poggi the interior.

A fresh new look on deck features wood covered cockpit coamings — which have been extended further aft for crew comfort — that add a new perspective to the yacht. With its modern, uncluttered look the design speaks of neatness and efficiency.

Below deck the Swan 80 has the space and capacity to offer a wide variety of cabin configurations and open areas to meet all requirements.

The new Swan 51 offers design and practical solutions that make the yacht comfortable and easy to sail from coastal waters to long offshore passages. The Swan 51 also features a mast which has been moved more to the centre of the yacht, further enhancing balance.

Ultimately, like all Swans, the 51 is a no-compromise sailing yacht, a pure sailor, more a sportscar than a limousine. It is designed to be reactive to steer and responsive to sail adjustments, bringing the sensations of sailing alive.

With options

The Swan 80’s near flush wooden deck serves to highlight the discreet and streamlined coachroof running aft from the mast.

As the whole aft cockpit section of the yacht is flat, it allows any configuration of seating, ondeck storage or other furnishings that might be desired. It is also possible, of course, to remove all deck furniture when in racing mode.

Similarly the open aft deck can be set up for swimming and sunbathing when in cruising configuration, with easy access to the beach area and swimming platform, which in turn are adjacent to the full beam lazarette which can easily accommodate a rigid inflatable boat.

The Swan 80 features twin rudders for directional stability, a tapered hull entrance and powerful aft section, with design allowing optimal balance between performance and stability at different angles of heel.

The hull’s construction of foam cored glass fibre reinforced epoxy with carbon fibre unidirectional reinforcements ensures solidity and durability.

Exterior Designer

Lucio micheletti.

A skilful combination of traditional styling and taut forms, an interplay of materials that creates a lively chiaroscuro with a marked dynamic quality (what the architect Micheletti calls ‘quayside speed’). The cockpit offers the typical three-area division that characterises all Swans. The front area, close to the deckhouse and protected by a sprayhood and a bimini top (a retractable model with rigid structure is optional), is dedicated to guests.

The interior designer

Versatility and flexibility are the order of the day when heading below decks on the Swan 80.

A variety of optional configurations are available for the location of cabins, sitting and dining areas. One possibility sees the spacious owners cabin located forward, with another four guest and VIP cabins all with en suite facilities.

The crew quarters are organised in an area aft, with independent access to the cockpit, engine room and other technical areas to avoid disturbing guests. Another possibility allows for the temporary conversion of a guest cabin for crew use, thus increasing the crew from 2 to 5.

The already spacious saloon area can be further increased by utilising the space of one guest cabin for an additional TV or dining area — another nod to the maxi philosophy.
