AMERICA'S CUP

Who currently holds the America’s Cup? List of challengers and defenders since 1851

Emirates team new zealand seized their first opportunity in 2022 to clinch the america’s cup and lift the legendary “hundred guineas” cup again..

Svetozar Pavlović

One hundred and seventy-three years ago, on the Isle of Wight, a race began that would become a legend in the sailing world —a race that continues to be discussed today. The competition was for a silver trophy that captured the imaginations and fortunes of some of the wealthiest people in the world, sparking bitter rivalries, intense controversies, and costly legal battles.

What’s more remarkable is that the boat that would become the center of attention by winning the race, the yacht America , started the race facing the wrong way.

The first America’s Cup winner and some of the famous losers?

The Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes is one of the most prestigious yacht clubs in the world because this is where the America’s Cup began. Despite the poor start, America surprised its British hosts by winning the race, and the trophy soon made its way to New York. However, after the victory, the owners and crew were uncertain about what to do with their prize—until someone had an idea. This idea would transform the trophy into the most prestigious sailing award, and it has since become the oldest international sporting trophy in the world.

The trophy was renamed the America’s Cup after the yacht that won the first race , though it is informally known as the Auld Mug

Interesting trivia about the winning boat of the first event was a 100-foot schooner, and after winning the cup, the vessel was sold for a sum of $25,000, $5000 more than it was paid for.

For some, the America’s Cup has grown into an obsession. The quest for this trophy has led some of the wealthiest people to pour vast sums of money into their campaigns, only to come up short. Yet, despite the immense costs, many have returned to challenge for the Cup again and again. The New York Yacht Club, in particular, holds the record for the longest winning streak in history, fueled by these relentless East Coast competitors.

One such competitor was Thomas Lipton , who, despite five unsuccessful challenges with his Shamrock yachts, used the publicity to build his tea empire. His repeated failures earned him the respect and affection of the public, even as they cost him a fortune to defend his campaigns. In contrast, others, like Lord Dunraven , were entangled in bitter disputes , illustrating the passion and intensity that have always surrounded the America’s Cup.

In 1901, Sir Thomas Lipton and Shamrock II came close to a win when they crossed the line just two seconds ahead of Columbia. It was the closest-ever margin recorded in America's Cup history at the time, but 41 seconds adrift on handicap. pic.twitter.com/lY9ngKcvqd — ⚓️MaRiO⚓️ (@1SafetyLast) November 2, 2022

The early days of the America’s Cup are as captivating as today’s high-tech, carbon-fiber racing machines.

The last winner of the 100 Guineas trophy and list of all winners?

The America’s Cup is the oldest international sailing competition. Races are held between a defending and challenging yacht club, with the winner awarded the America’s Cup trophy, known as the Auld Mug .

Any yacht club meeting the specified requirements can challenge the current holder. If successful, the challenging club gains stewardship of the Cup. In 1970, a Challenger Selection Series was held to decide the official challenger .

Team New Zealand syndicate

The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron club is the current holder of the America’s Cup . They successfully defended the 36th America’s Cup in March 2021 using an AC75 foiling monohull called Te Rehutai, owned and sailed by the Team New Zealand syndicate and heavily sponsored by Emirates airline company.

The next America’s Cup will be held between the defending Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and a challenging yacht club from 12 October 2024 in Barcelona, Spain.

The Royal Yacht Squadron’s Castle clubhouse is best known to most sailors as the centre of the action at Cowes Week. Puffs of smoke in the aftermath of the bangs waft across the water towards the fleets of yachts, their crews’ faces pinched with concentration as they plan their beat up the rocky Island shore.

No first-timer to Cowes Week can fail to be awestruck by the Castle. Competitors mill around before their starts, staring at the flags and course-boards, getting a sight down the startline straight into the windows.

Looking is as near as most sailors ever get to this most aristocratic of clubs. Members will repair to the Squadron after racing, taking tea on the lawn, before entering the Castle for cocktails before a party or the fabulous Squadron Ball, but for the rest, the Castle itself, built by Henry VIII to repel the French, is a visual symbol of the club’s exclusivity.

The most prestigious club in Britain, possibly the world, is wreathed in mystique. The only way to join this club of Kings, Lords, Hons and Sirs is to be invited by a member and be subject to a secret ballot. The fact that the membership list reads like Debretts is an indication of most sailors’ chances of being invited.

It’s said that wealthy tea merchant Sir Thomas Lipton was blackballed for being ‘in trade’, which is why his 1898 bid for the America’s Cup was sponsored by the Royal Ulster YC. He was allowed in eventually, but died just two years later so scarcely had time to enjoy the Castle’s delights.

Some accept a blackballing with grace, others kick up a stink, like the owner of a 150-ton schooner who, the story goes, sent a message to the club that he was anchored within close range and would commence shelling unless he received a personal apology from Percy Shelley, son of the famous poet, who had blackballed him.

Flying the white ensign

The appeal of being a member is obvious. Who wouldn’t want to fly the white ensign from their stern? The Squadron is the only yacht club with a Royal Navy warrant to do so, granted in 1829. And who wouldn’t want to walk boldly in to meet and drink with the great and the good?

I asked the current commodore, the Hon Christopher Sharples why, when a number of royal clubs are struggling to find new members, the Squadron has a healthy waiting list. “It’s a very fine club,” he responded. “People enjoy the standards and the tremendous history. Members treat the Castle as a much-loved country home.”

Unknown

RYS commodore, the Hon Christopher Sharples

Originally named The Yacht Club, it was founded on 1 June 1815 by a group of 42 gentleman yachting enthusiasts. Five years later, member King George IV conferred the Royal in the club’s title and in 1833 King William IV renamed the club the Royal Yacht Squadron. Members met in the Thatched House Tavern in St James’s, London, and in Cowes twice a year for dinner.

Today there are 535 members and dinner is served in the magnificent Members’ Dining Room, under the painted gaze of illustrious past admirals and commodores. The room is adorned with silver trophies and scenes of the high seas, and waiters bring course after course from the kitchens and wine cellars below. There are bedrooms for overnight stays, a room for members to keep their ‘mess kit’ or black tie, which is required dress on Saturday nights, and even gun lockers for shooting parties.

But sailing is the club’s raision d’être and neither a title nor a fortune are a guarantee of entry. The club professes that “any gentleman or lady actively interested in yachting” is eligible for nomination.

The Squadron was where yacht racing was born. In the early 1800s the aristocracy came to Cowes to socialise and cruise in their boats. The first races were duels between the yachts of the day, then rules for fleet racing were drawn up. The first club regatta, later to become Cowes Week, was in 1826. For more than a century the reigning monarch would be there to present the King’s or Queen’s trophy.

Some of history’s greatest yachtsmen are on the Squadron’s membership roll: Sir Thomas Sopwith, John Illingworth, Sir Francis Chichester, Sir Alec Rose, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston. Ties with the Navy are strong and some of British maritime history’s most famous names have been Squadron members, not least Nelson’s vice-admiral Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy who commanded HMS Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar, Admiral Lord Cochrane who was the inspriation for C.S. Forester’s Hornblower novels and Admiral Sir Jeremy Black, captain of the aircraft carrier HMS Invincible during the Falklands War.

Perhaps the club is still best known around the world for hosting the race around the Isle of Wight in 1851 won by the schooner America , which took home what became known as the America’s Cup. The Squadron donated the Cup itself in 1851 and mounted a number of challenges to win it back.

More than 160 years later the America’s Cup has still never been won by a British challenger, but now the commodore believes the Royal Yacht Squadron has “the best chance we have ever had” with its sponsorship of Ben Ainslie Racing as official British challenger for the 2017 Cup.

Drink in this new entry in the soda pop presidential poll: Kamala’s Berry Surprise

Yacht club soda, based in north providence, r.i., will now pit donald’s trumpian punch against a new flavor named for the new democratic presidential candidate, kamala harris.

Yacht Club Soda this week is unveiling a new flavor, Kamala's Berry Surprise, that will go head-to-head with Donald's Trumpian Punch.

NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Soda Pop Poll that Yacht Club Soda conducts during presidential election years had been all set, with Donald’s Trumpian Punch going head-to-head with Joe’s Bidenomics Berry.

But when President Biden dropped out of the race on July 21, the 109-year-old North Providence soda company scrambled to adapt, and on Wednesday, new labels arrived for Kamala’s Berry Surprise. This year, the soda poll will gauge the combined Biden/Harris bottle sales vs. the sales of Trump soda.

“Like the rest of America, and the world, we were surprised by President Biden’s unprecedented decision to drop out of the race,” owner John Sgambato said Wednesday. “But making soda at Yacht Club never stops, and our team is fired up to release Kamala’s Berry Surprise.”

Yacht Club Soda is conducting a Soda Pop Poll with Donald's Trumpian Punch now facing Kamala's Berry Surprise.

When the Rhode Island Report podcast visited the bottling plant earlier in the summer, Sgambato said he would be prepared for the possibility that Biden might exit the race. “We’ll have to shift quickly if that happens,” he said. “We’ll figure something out.”

He said Frankie Galasso did the art for the new label, and Kristina Cinquegrana Petrilli produced the design.

In the 2020 Soda Pop Poll , Donald’s Big League Punch beat Joe’s Berry-Blue Lemonade 54 percent to 33 percent, with 11 percent “going independent” by purchasing Gaspee Point Berrymelon Rebellion.

And in 2016′s poll, Donald’s Populist Punch edged Hillary’s Liberal Limeade, 46.3 percent to 44.5 percent, while 9.2 percent went for Gary’s Sassy Sarsaparilla, named for Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson.

Sgambato said people tend to base their purchases on both flavor and political preferences.

“We definitely have some people that come in and feel like, ‘Oh, I’m not buying that one or I’m not doing this one,’ but most people will grab both and try them,” he said. “And then if they like one more, they’ll come back and grab some more, because it is a limited run.”

The flavors are available at Yacht Club’s factory store, farmers markets, and local stores and restaurants.

The rich and famous are not merely looking for the best place to anchor their yachts; they are also seeking out exclusive memberships in stunning destinations, all offering luxury amenities and, of course, bragging rights. These exclusive yachting clubs with often outrageous initiation fees, provide luxurious clubhouses, and provide accommodations for yachties who want to get their land legs. Most of them provide high-end concierge service to its members as well as Michelin-star quality restaurants and more.

Yacht Clubs have been recognized in the Platinum Clubs of America elections for more than 20 years. According to the Platinum Club, “Recognition in the following categories is important in the selection of Platinum status; Tradition, history, and heritage, a respected membership, excellence in amenities, exceptional service, adapting to changing times, and overall experience.

I spoke with the President of Club Leaders Forum, David V. Smith, about the selection, and he says, “we created an alphabetical selection this time as opposed to by rank because we felt that it was challenging to compare a yacht club in Ireland with a yacht club in Singapore, as amenities, location and facilities do vary quite a lot. The yachting and boating world is a different and unique culture, typically a little more relaxed and not as formal as country clubs and golf clubs. However, many of the world’s finest yacht clubs have wonderful history and traditions, with a great sense of camaraderie among their members. Certain yacht clubs were selected by the Panel not necessarily for their facilities and amenities but in their recognition of hosting world class sailing regattas and events.”

Here are the top 50 most exclusive yacht clubs worldwide being awarded the ultimate Platinum Status for 2021.

Yacht Club de Monaco

Founded by Prince Rainier III in 1953, the Yacht Club De Monaco is a prestigious club that holds a unique position on the international yachting scene with more than 1600 members drawn from 66 nationalities.

The reigning Club President since 1984 has been His Royal Highness, Prince Sovereign Albert II, and a suitably formal dress code for day and evening wear is enforced at all times. Membership is limited and very, very exclusive: prospective candidates must submit an application form to the club committee and be introduced by two sponsors, both of whom must be existing members. The successful applicant will be welcomed with an ice-breaking cocktail party and gala dinner in their honor.

The futuristic clubhouse was redesigned in 2013 and overlooks Port Hercules, it offers up very popular cocktail bar and Mediterranean restaurant.

The following information is from the Australian National Maritime Museum.

2024 is the 250th anniversary of the birth of Matthew Flinders; a great seafaring explorer, charting much of Australia’s coastline despite a series of trials and wild adventures. An outstanding sailor, surveyor, navigator and scientist, he was a considerate and self-sacrificing leader who looked after all under his command.

Flinders was laid to rest in London, England (1814), but his grave’s location became a mystery.?The headstone on Flinders’ grave disappeared in the 1840s, and his remains were lost. It took almost two centuries to find his grave, which was unearthed during excavation of the burial ground?in London January 2019. The discovery sparked a passionate?successful campaign?by his descendants and locals, to have Flinders reburied in the town he was born – Donington, England.

The reburial will take place Saturday 13 July 2024 at 10.30pm Sydney   time and will be livestreamed on the  Matthew Flinders Bring Him Home YouTube channel. You can watch on the link below.

Help Wanted

Coral Taylor is trying to find out every girl who won Queen of the Harbour between 1927 and 2010.  We will put up specific questions over the next weeks so keep watching this space.

To date 63 Queen of the Harbour names have been found.  Seventeen more were recently added thanks to the files prepared by John Stanley and stored in the SFS History Room.

It sure takes time to work through the  weekly SFS Programmes and further complicated by the issue that often the event was not sailed on  the same date each year!

If you have any information on the SFS Queen of the Harbour event, please contact me.  In our wider community there may be articles or pictures stored away?  Do you know anyone who could help?

the squadron yacht club

Sydney Flying Squadron (SFS) is the original home of the famous Sydney Harbour sailing skiff class, the 18-footers. The Sydney Flying Squadron Yacht Club was founded by Mark Foy in 1891.  He promoted a vision of open boat sailing with broad popular appeal for spectators and open to all sailors, regardless of financial background. In doing so, he challenged the gentlemanly sailing conventions of the day, particularly by having coloured sails and prize money!

A fleet of replica boats from early 1900s up to the 1940s race each Saturday from October through to Easter each year. They are built and sailed using skills no longer practiced. These boats provide an insight into how sailing used to be almost a century ago.

Amalgamation

View a message from the Commodore on the current state of the amalgamation between SFS and the Australian 18 Footers League.

“Friends of the Squaddie”

Following the work carried out by the Amalgamation Sub-Committee appointed by the SFS Board to examine the Amalgamation proposal, a majority of members of that Sub-Committee have formed the Friends of the Squaddie to campaign for the Amalgamation to be rejected by SFS members.

See the documents that the sub-committee provided to the SFS board on 12-Feb-2024 here:

Amalgamation between Sydney Flying Squadron and Double Bay 18-footer League

The Board of the Sydney Flying Squadron (SFS) has decided to postpone the Amalgamation Member Vote from the proposed date of 16th March, 2024 to a date to be set in late April or May, 2024.

Welcome to Australia’s oldest open boat sailing club

The Sydney Flying Squadron today still enshrines much of Foy’s vision. The Historic 18-Footers race with coloured insignia to enable spectators to distinguish each skiff in following the races. They sail courses in view of a ferry of onlookers following the race, and a timed handicap start enables a thrilling, first-over-the-line finish for the ferry patrons. These unique wooden boats keep alive the skills and excitement of boats you would normally only see in a museum.

From early October to Easter, the SFS sails the Historic 18-foot skiffs on Saturdays. The Club also hosts other open boat or skiff classes, such as the 12 footers. A dedicated spectator ferry runs on Saturdays during the sailing season, providing a magnificent harbour cruise while following the 18-footers’ racing. It is easily the best value, and most visually exciting cruise on our magnificent harbour!

Situated at the end of Careening Cove, Kirribilli, the Sydney Flying Squadron clubhouse enjoys spectacular water views and is situated next to Milsons Park which provides a large grassy rigging area. It is a great sight on Saturday mornings in summer, when the Historic 18-footers are rigged on the lawn, before launching down the ramp next to the Club for the afternoons’ racing.

Facilities include a boatshed, wharf, balcony, bar and the stunningly refurbished Foy’s Kirribilli Restaurant – the perfect location for all your social events. A café operates on the lower deck, accessed from Milsons Park.

Membership is open to sailing and social members and offers the best value of all amongst Sydney Sailing Clubs. The location cannot be bettered.

See you there!

Renewals are now open for 23/24. Beyond access to our historic Club, Membership gets you:
