Solstice 35m Twin Mast Cruising Catamaran

35M twin mast cat7 solstice

Solstice is a conceptual catamaran designed by Yacht and Superyacht designer Andrew Trujillo. The British based designer conceived the yacht as a result of conversations with a Naval Architect friend of his who was currently testing a small twin mast recreational Catamaran.

“The conversation fired my imagination and brought to mind an old university project.  I recall that at University I had designed a catamaran and quite early on I realised that the conventional central placement of masts on the majority of Catamarans, although practical for most applications, is not ideal from a structural point of view.

I have had the chance and privilege to be involved in a catamaran project with a very respected production catamaran manufacturer of late and I thought it would be fun to try something a little experimental for myself. Naturally, twin rig catamarans are not new, with many racing and performance examples available, but I thought a cruising cat would be an interesting conceptual challenge, hence Solstice….”

Echo Yachts Set to Construct World’s Largest Sailing Catamaran Superyacht

By Frances Flannagan

A contract has been signed for Australian yard Echo Yachts to build a full-custom, twin masted catamaran sailing superyacht. Geared up to be the largest sail powered catamaran in the world, this project solidifies Echo Yachts’ place as an experienced builder in both the motor and sailing markets.

Echo Yachts has teamed with two renowned sailing and aluminium multihull design firms to deliver the newly-commissioned 57m sailing catamaran. She will feature an extremely efficient hull form with twin masts and sails, boasting a sail area of 1660 sqm for eco-efficient long range cruising.

This yacht will further be characterised by weight reduction, simplicity and ease of operation, highlighting the efficient design of the Australian yard.

Mark Stothard, Owner and Director of Echo Yachts, commented: ‘ This new superyacht will truly elevate the term ‘green superyacht design’ with its low resistance catamaran hull form, sail powered capability and other emission reducing technologies.’

Dykstra Naval Architects has been chosen to pen her exterior styling, layout and naval architecture. With a strong portfolio that includes S/Y BLACK PEARL and S/Y HETAIROS, this is set to be a harmonious collaboration for this iconic sailing catamaran.

Her detailed naval architecture and structural design will be penned by One2Three Naval Architects. Like Dykstra, this brand is also responsible for some sensational superyachts, including M/Y WHITE RABBIT and catamaran superyacht M/Y CHARLEY 2.

‘One2three are honoured and thrilled to be selected by Echo Yachts and Dykstra to undertake naval architecture and structural design for another ground breaking Echo Yachts superyacht,’  commented Steve Quigley, Owner and Director of One2Three Naval Architects. ‘The Echo/Dykstra full-custom 57m sailing catamaran will cement Echo Yachts’ Australian build capability on the world stage for unique superyachts.’

Echo Yachts’ proven capabilities are showcased as it has expanded from its proven capabilities of the construction of large-custom motor yachts into the sailing yacht market, highlighting Echo Yachts’ wealth of experience and knowledge.

Stothard concluded: ‘Echo Yachts are extremely excited and proud to have been selected to custom build this magnificent catamaran sailing superyacht, and look forward to bringing the yacht to fruition with our Client, Dykstra and One2Three.’

Echo Yachts to build world’s largest sailing catamaran

As the western australian industry continues to grow, the perth-based shipbuilder will construct a fully custom 57-metre, twin-masted catamaran….

twin masted catamaran

Echo Yachts , Dykstra Naval Architects  and One2Three Naval Architects have collaborated on the design and build of a twin-masted catamaran sailing superyacht. The 57-metre yacht has been commissioned by an experienced private client and is poised to become the world’s largest sail-powered catamaran.

“Echo Yachts are extremely excited and proud to have been selected to custom build this magnificent catamaran sailing superyacht, and look forward to bringing the yacht to fruition,” says Mark Stothard, Echo Yachts Owner and Director.

“This new superyacht will truly elevate the term ‘green superyacht design’ with its low resistance catamaran hull form, sail-powered capability and other emission-reducing technologies”.

When looking at the data provided by Echo Yachts, multihulls are expediently more efficient than their monohull counterparts. For instance, when looking at the 91.5m Oceanco Tranquility (previously known as Equanimity ) compared to Echo Yachts’ 84m trimaran White Rabbit – despite having a similar gross tonnage, Tranquility requires 7.2MW of power to achieve a top speed of 19 knots.

In contrast, White Rabbit needs only 4.2MW to reach 18.7 knots –a 40% reduction in power consumption. Considering that the industry has extensively voiced its aspirations to decarbonise and adopt more environmentally friendly practices, multihulls present a compelling option.

Dykstra Naval Architects, headquartered in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, brings its expertise to the table, spearheading the exterior styling, layout, and naval architecture of the yacht. With a portfolio boasting iconic sailing yacht projects like Black Pearl and Hetairos, Dykstra Naval Architects is synonymous with excellence in maritime design.

Handling the detailed structural design is the esteemed Australian firm One2Three Naval Architects. Notable for their expertise in aluminium and multihull design, One2Three Naval Architects is responsible for the intricate naval architecture of acclaimed vessels such as the international award-winning 84m aluminium trimaran superyacht White Rabbit , delivered in 2018, and the 56m catamaran superyacht  Charley 2, delivered in 2023.

The yacht's aluminium hull form is complemented by twin masts and sails, with a total sail area of around 1660 msq, ideal for efficient long-range cruising. While aluminium offers advantages such as reduced weight and increased speed, it also poses specific difficulties that builders must overcome.

One of the primary challenges is ensuring structural integrity and stability. Aluminium is lighter than steel, but it is also less rigid. Builders must carefully design and engineer the hull and structural components to maintain stability and durability while minimising weight.

“Aluminium fabrication also tends to be a little more challenging and requires a higher level of skill compared to steel. For example, our aluminium welders can easily transition to welding steel, but it's more difficult for steel welders to adapt to welding aluminium,” explains Chris Blackwell, Sales and Marketing Manager, Echo Yachts.

“Unlike steel, aluminium involves more complex weld sequencing and techniques. However, this is only a challenge if you're not already proficient in it. When you have industries like we have here in West Australia, where we have the capability to launch ourselves and maintain a high level of competency and accuracy in our work, it's not an issue for us to handle aluminium fabrication.”

The news is significant as there is currently a lot of movement in the Western Australia superyacht sector, with the state having a 12,000-tonne lifting capacity floating dock too. Coupled with several prominent superyacht builders specialising in the design, manufacturing, and export of custom-made superyachts, refits, and maintenance services, the region is a hub for high-end maritime craftsmanship.

The national domestic fleet of superyachts has seen a noteworthy doubling between 2022 and 2023, indicative of a thriving industry. In 2023 alone, the Western Australian superyacht sector is conservatively estimated to support 1,395 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs, contributing significantly to the local economy. This includes $119.5 million in wages and salaries paid to Western Australian workers and a substantial $180.6 million contribution to the Gross State Product (GSP), encompassing both direct and flow-on economic impacts.

This new large-scale catamaran sailing yacht project sees Echo Yachts expand on their proven large-custom motor yacht capabilities by entering the large-custom sailing yacht market.

The potential of multihull vessels in the superyacht segment is a core focus of a feature article in the upcoming New Build Report, featuring insights from Echo Yachts and Shadowcat, dissecting why uptake has been relatively slow, and why the industry could see a paradigm shift towards multihulls over the next decade.

Yacht and Superyacht designer, Andrew Trujillo , is proud to present his latest 35m (115’) twin mast cruising catamaran Solstice concept. The UK-based designer conceived superyacht Solstice concept as a result of conversations with a Naval Architect friend of his, who was currently testing a small twin mast recreational Catamaran.

“Early this year I produced a 45metre concept fast catamaran named “ Equinox ” (a fast power catamaran), so “Solstice” was the natural name and type of design to come up with, I felt. I happen to believe that the future of yachting will be vessels of this type, comfortable, spacious and efficient, with genuine environmental credentials.

Although conceived to be built in Aluminium, she could naturally be built of GRP. Personally, I think that Aluminium would suit her well, but as a concept what she is built of is a little more flexible…”

Luxury yacht Solstice concept is shy of 38 metres (125’) long overall to the tip of the bowsprit (although named a 35metre as that is closer to the length of vessels she would be compared to) with a beam of just over 21 metres (69’), she is in reality, simply vast for a vessel of this length. The space available on the main deck has the potential to become a more impressive space than that available on larger yachts, offering interesting possibilities akin to a residential loft with the large open plan area.  The main deck alone boasts (2,712 square feet) 250 m2 .

As with “Equinox”, the previous concept design, the overall layout has been planned to provide maximum privacy and quiet for the guests, with the starboard pontoon dedicated solely for Guests whilst the Port pontoon is for use by crew for accommodation, laundry and galley functions. Solstice has been designed to carry 8 Guests, and between 7 and 14 crew.

Sited on the port side of central part (tunnel) of the super yacht Solstice concept is the main salon area large formal dining area to seat 14, with a buffet area next to it. A partly shielded pantry serves the dining area. The starboard side and part of the centre has a large lounge area, a smaller and more intimate seating space, a library and card tables. The space aft of the dining area has been planned to have either a grand piano or a large billiards /snooker table.

The helm and pilothouse area is also placed to starboard with the main helm positioned ahead of the starboard mast base, whilst the chart tables and remainder of the pilothouse is placed aft of the mast.

The starboard pontoon has accommodation for a Master cabin fore, with a large ensuite bathroom which includes a bathtub and separate shower, his and hers sinks and large walk in wardrobe. Aft of the Owner’s cabin are two double VIP cabins and a twin cabin. Each pontoon has an area of 125m2 (1,345 square feet). The total space available is closer to that of a 45-47 Metre motor yacht.

The Port pontoon has three cabins which depending on configuration can be set out as two twins and a triple cabin or if Pullmans are used, three triples. Alternatively, if each crew cabin has bunks throughout, there is the potential to have a total of 14 crew. Each cabin has its own head, which is of a modular design, intended to be prefabricated before installation on the vessel.

Solstice yacht concept - aft view

The pontoon also has a large professional galley and an aft sited crew mess area. Laundry facilities are also available off the long corridor along with copious storage. The part height lower deck space  on the tunnel between the pontoons and beneath the main salon area is allocated to tankage and technical space, but also can be allocated for further storage and for supplies.

Perhaps one of the most distinctive features of this cruising catamaran is the twin mast set up. Although the visuals show two large and impressive masts, the advantage of this twin mast setup is that, in theory, as on a ketch or schooner, the masts need not be as large as when using a single mast. I understand that having smaller masts confers a number of advantages, in terms of handling and from a structural point of view. Each mast is sited on a pontoon, this means that they are mounted on very rigidly, and the compression loads are channelled on a part of the vessel that has plenty of structure and strength. A further advantage is that the vessel can sail effectively with rigging on just one of the masts, so she has an element of redundancy, which can be a definite bonus on a vessel designed to be capable of long distance and global cruising.

Solstice yacht is though, a motor sailer, but one with other modern surprises. She features electric azipods which greatly enhance the manoeuvrability, but also have been selected on grounds of packaging and space efficiency. She has two generators in the engine rooms mounted transversally. These not only provide the necessary electrical juice to provide propulsion when not under sail, but also deliver the needed power to fulfil the hotel loads of the yacht. This configuration allows the vessel to work as a hybrid and if provision is made by placing banks of batteries, she can operate as an electrically powered vessel, at least partly. She would also have the potential to use the prop as a generator when under sail, making her environmentally kinder and a much more efficient vessel, massively extending her potential range.

Solstice superyacht has a fly-bridge which offers great overall visibility and is great vantage point with two sunbeds and seating to accompany the helmsperson. The outdoor spaces are also enormous, with the current set up having a large aft dining table to starboard for alfresco dining and a very generous sofa on the port side. Between the two is a large whirlpool.

Solstice superyacht concept - side view

On the foredeck there are twin tables and generous seating areas, which at the switch of button and by placing large cushions can be converted into a sun lounging space.

This yacht is a conceptual project, therefore it seeks to push the boundaries a little but is intentionally thought out with a sense of realism, yet it has the aim of being thought provoking. It also seeks to some extent move away from being very upright and overtly functional looking or odd looking catamaran. Naturally catamarans do look and have different proportions to mono-hulled vessels. Arguably, as a designer the possibilities are greater to experiment. However, the most compelling aspect of designing a vessel like this one is that it seems to answer so many of the questions being asked at present.

Andrew Trujillo’s Twin Mast Cruising Catamaran Concept Called Solstice

By Brody Patterson

Updated on August 31, 2017

twin masted catamaran

UK-based yacht designer Andrew Trujillo presents his 35-meter (115 feet) twin mast cruising catamaran concept called Solstice .

The luxurious vessel is quite spacious for something of its size, though the overall setup was designed to provide as much tranquility and privacy as possible for those on board. Up to 8 guests can be accommodated in the two double VIP cabins, twin cabin, and Master suite. There’s also enough room for between 7 and 14 crew members.

The main salon is a sizeable space intended for formal dining, with seating for up to 14 people, with a buffet area and partly shielded pantry close by. Moving outside, the starboard side and part of the center feature an extensive lounge area, as well as more private seating space, a library, and card tables. In another nice touch, the space aft of the dining area has been designed to have either a grand piano or a large billiards/snooker table.

While Solstice is indeed only a concept and there’s no guarantee she will ever hit the waves, it’s nice to see designers always coming up with new intriguing and innovative creations. If not all, at least some of these features will surely make it into some of the great superyachts of the future.

Echo Yachts to construct world’s largest sailing catamaran

Monday, March 18th, 2024

Written by: Marine Industry News

Australian superyacht builder Echo Yachts has signed a contract to construct a full-custom 57-metre twin-masted catamaran sailing superyacht.

According to the Australian yard , the yacht is slated to become the world’s largest true sail-powered catamaran. The title is currently claimed by the 44.2m catamaran Hemisphere , built by Pendennis.

Dykstra Naval Architects, of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, is providing the yacht’s exterior styling, layout and naval architecture. The firm has previously worked on sailing projects, including S/Y Black Pearl and S/Y Hetairos .

Naval architecture and structural design come from Australian firm One2Three Naval Architects, which was responsible for the design of 84m aluminium trimaran superyacht M/Y White Rabbit , delivered in 2018, and the 56m Echo Yachts vessel M/Y Charley 2 , Australia’s largest catamaran, delivered in 2023.

“We look forward to working with the owner’s team, Echo Yachts and One2Three on taking the current design concept to the next stage of realisation,” says Thys Nikkels, Dykstra Naval Architects CEO.

Echo Yachts’ owner and director, Mark Stothard, adds: “Echo Yachts is extremely excited and proud to have been selected to custom build this magnificent catamaran sailing superyacht, and we look forward to bringing the yacht to fruition with our client, Dykstra and One2Three.

This new superyacht will truly elevate the term ‘green superyacht design’ with its low resistance catamaran hull form, sail-powered capability and other emission-reducing technologies.”

One2Three Naval Architects owner Steve Quigley comments: “One2Three are honoured and thrilled to be selected by Echo Yachts and Dykstra to undertake naval architecture and structural design for another groundbreaking Echo Yachts superyacht. Being at the forefront of innovation is our aspiration and successfully commercialising technology our passion.

“The Echo/Dykstra full-custom 57m sailing catamaran will cement Echo Yachts’ Australian build capability on the world stage for unique superyachts.”

The yacht has been commissioned by a private client. Echo Yachts says it will issue further updates during the build.

» boat builders, » boating events, new 35m twin-masted catamaran concept, designer andrew trujillo has released this 35 metre twin-masted catamaran superyacht concept, solstice. designer andrew trujillo has explored the concept of an environmentally conscious twin-masted 35m catamaran. she follows a 45 metre concept cat produced by trujillo called equinox and as with that idea, features strong environmental credentials and a layout planned to provide maximum privacy and quiet for the guests, within a 21 metre beam. the starboard pontoon is dedicated solely for guests, whilst the port pontoon is for use by crew for accommodation, laundry and the galley. solstice has been designed to carry eight guests and between seven and 14 crew. trujillo, based in shrewsbury in england, was inspired by talking to a naval architect friend who was testing a small twin mast leisure cat. he said, the conversation fired my imagination and brought to mind an old university project. i had designed a catamaran and quite early on realised that the conventional central placement of masts on the majority of catamarans, although practical for most applications, is not ideal from a structural point of view. i have had the chance and privilege to be involved in a catamaran project with a very respected production catamaran manufacturer of late and i thought it would be fun to try something a little experimental for myself. naturally, twin rig catamarans are not new, with many racing and performance examples available, but i thought a cruising cat would be an interesting conceptual challenge, hence solstice. the 115ft sailing superyacht is conceived to be built in aluminium or grp, said trujillo. he said among the benefits of having two masts was that any twin-masted boat was able to carry shorter spars than a marconi-rigged rival. i understand that having smaller masts confers a number of advantages, in terms of handling and from a structural point of view, trujillo said. each mast is sited on a pontoon. this means that they are mounted on very rigidly and the compression loads are channeled on a part of the vessel that has plenty of structure and strength. a further advantage is that the vessel can sail effectively with rigging on just one of the masts, so she has an element of redundancy, which can be a definite bonus on a vessel designed to be capable of long-distance and global cruising. cruising speed is estimated at 25 knots and the big cat features electric pod drive units which enhance maneuverability and create more space inside the hull. two generators create the necessary electrical power to drive the boat when not under sail and will also cover the likely heavy energy consumption of the cat with a full compliment on board. the configuration would allow the vessel to work as a hybrid and if a suitable battery bank was installed, the boat could operate as an electrically powered vessel. she would also have the potential to use the prop as a generator when under sail, boosting her environmental credentials and extending her range..

Do any of u have thoughts on using 2 masts on a cat? What I'm wondering is if you put a smaller mast on each hull instead of one large one on the bridge deck.

It sounds more complicated. But that is an uninformed opinion.

As Jamez said, It has been done before ----and has been done to death. As the old saying says, "Why use two when one will do". If the idea was so good you have to ask your self, why don't you see them all over the place today. All the complications of cost, rigging complexity, control, trim balance, airflow interference------the list goes on.

I would love to have a couple of days on one of the little Schionning RB8000's to try the whole deal out. There would seem to be some limitations for racing (harder to fly a hull and limitations in size of any extras) which is probably why there aren't so many around. Also they are 'different' and sailors tend to be conservative when it comes to their own money. That said, the idea of a cruising boat with only two sails and two strings to pull (like the Radical bay) has some attraction. Tom F Jones wrote at length on his experience with a biplane rig on his 25' Dandy. However Jones' approach was to fit a complete stayed rig to each hull which effectively doubled all the cost and complexity. In the end he changed the boat to a single mast. If you read around a bit there have been some successful biplane rigged cats but they all seem to be based on free standing masts of some type or other, which most of the modern iterations seem to be based around - usually carbon these days. Casting the clock back, a friend of mine built the boat (blue topsides) in the pic around 30 years ago. Designer Bernard Rhodes helped modify the plans (pahi 31) and designed the rig - with freestanding wood/glass masts - which it still carries, through several subsequent owners (pics were taken long after the original owner sold her). Rhodes went on to design and build 'Flying Carpet' a biplane rigged cat of around 11 metres, which he sailed from NZ to Japan and back and then used as a charter boat (white cat below).

Thank u all for your responses. I checked out the sites Jamez referred me to. Great information. My original thought was that 2 smaller masts would mean smaller sails with less rigging meaning easier to handle. I hadn't taken into account the shadowing effect one sail would have on the other, or the different driving forces on the separate hulls. I imagine it would be much like having a motor in each hull, were one is running at full speed while the other is at half speed, with the boat constantly trying to turn towards the slower motor. I truly appreciate your patience with my basic sailing questions. This is my first foray into multihulls after many years with planing power boats. Now that i have retired i'm ready to slow down and smell the roses, so to speak. My next boat will definitely be a cat. Now my mission is to define what i really want to do with it, find one that fits, and get back on the water.

I just remembered that the creative & innovative french designer and builder Dennis Kergomard also designed some catamarans with 2 masts. Al his boats are inspiring and its worth to look around on his website Imo. thanks hasyb. Very interesting concepts. The catamixt appears to use two fixed wing type sails that rotate around the deck house. I wonder if one of these was ever built. Lol..now i have to research fixed wing type sails.

the fastest sailboats built, all of the record breakers, all have single sloop rigged sails. two smaller sails are less efficient that one large one of the same area. Meaning you get more speed out of the same amount of sail area with one large sail. There are other reason to go to twin sails, that is one to make it easier to handle two smallish sails by a single crew. Also, as noted, smaller rigs are easier to make unstayed masts and simpler rigging without being overly heavy. And there is also something to be said for redundancy on a long distance cruiser. Do it to have something unique, but not because it actually performs better. Me, I think simpler is better, which ever one has the few parts and costs less is the one I go for. fewer parts also means more reliable, few parts to break or wear out.
Actually twin rigs did break several records: Yves Parlier with his hydroplaneur broke 24hour record, above mentioned 50/50 broke Lake Balaton record, and also Radical Bay is said (by people who sail it) that it has superior performance. two smaller sails are less efficient that one large one of the same area. Here's a Radical Bay 8000 that claims to have been a winner in international regattas: Crazy Horse . (doing chartering at the moment)

prograd, yes, you are correct, there are some narrowly defined records that often use unconventional rigs. Perhaps I should clarify, as far I am aware, all of the open ocean records are currently held by multi-hulls with conventional sloop rigs. They are advanced design, yes, but the basic configuration is a sloop. It would seem from a pure efficiency standpoint a large single sail should be the most efficient at producing trust. But all of the open ocean records are held by sloops, even the single handed ones. Perhaps the higher pointing ability of the sloop gives it an edge in open water sailing from point to point.

7 Popular Sailboats with Two Masts (With Pictures & Prices)

' src=

Sailboats can come with one, two, or even more masts. You can also have different-sized masts placed on the front, back, or middle of your vessel.

Below, I have listed popular sailboats that have two masts.

Let’s get started!

Table of Contents

Check also: Average sailboat price examples .

Things to Know About Sailboats With Two Masts

When looking for sailboats with two masts, you should know what you are looking for. A Ketch is one type of sailboat with two masts.

Knowing this term can help you to nail down your search when looking for a boat with two masts.

These boats come in many shapes and sizes as well as many different types of designs. Generally, these types of boats have the taller mast being forward and the smaller mast near the aft.

Yawls are also boats that feature two masts.

These also come in multiple types and designs. The difference between the Ketch and the Yawl is that the Yawl has the larger mast in the aft instead of forward. They also have smaller sails and can be easier to handle.

Another type of sailing ship that features two masts is a Brigantine.

This ship has mixed sailing rigs which commonly features squared sails on the front part of the ship and triangular sails on the back of the ship.

These boats are often larger and require more people to handle them.

7 Great Used Boats with Two Masts

There are many benefits to used boats including a lower cost. You can get a larger boat for a lower cost if you choose to buy used.

When looking at used boats, you need to make sure you look at the boat and its features thoroughly to make sure everything is in great working order.

If you do not feel confident that you can properly look over a used vessel, you can even hire a marine inspector to look it over and let you know of any potential issues or needed repairs. You can use this assessment to decide what is worth it, or if the needed repairs fall into the budget.

It is much more common for a used boat to have more than one mast. This is because the newer sailboat models are creating their new designs with just one mast.

One mast ships are easier to handle and manage so new designs are trying to optimize design and ease of sailing.

Below are great used sailboats with two masts which I have arranged by price .

1. 1976 Westerly Center Cockpit Ketch

twin masted catamaran

This 1976 Westerly Center Cockpit Ketch is a small 36-foot long sailboat with two masts. This is a solidly built cruising vessel that features a center cockpit ketch layout.

This boat has a small 38 horsepower engine perfectly fit to navigate its smaller size.

The interior features 1 single berth and 3 double berths all in 3 cabins. This boat also has 2 full heads onboard.

You also have a full galley with a 4 burner stove, refrigerator and freezer, stainless steel sink, and microwave oven.

This boat makes great use of limited space and offers many amenities in a much smaller frame.

Price: $37,000.00

2. 1978 Jeanneau Gin Fizz

twin masted catamaran

The 1978 Jeanneau Gin Fizz is a trusted and popular two-masted design capable of crossing the Atlantic Ocean .

This boat is also very spacious for a boat that is only 38 feet in length. This model also won an award for “security, comfort, ease of handling, and ability to handle varying conditions.”

This particular used model has been well maintained and upgraded over the years.

This boat is great for family cruising, offshore passages, and even racing.

This boat features a 50 horsepower engine to help navigation.

Inside you can find 2 cabins and 1 head. You will be highly comfortable with air conditioning and other interior luxuries.

Price: $46,000.00

4. 1977 Puma 38 Ketch

twin masted catamaran

The Puma 38 Ketch is a two-masted sailboat built for racing like the rest of the Puma sailing line. This brand prides itself on speed and maneuverability.

The 1977 Puma 38 is 34 feet in length with a backup diesel engine that can help you get where you need to go as well as docking into a slip. This motor features more horsepower than the average sailboat with 45 horsepower.

Features on this vessel include autopilot, electrical and manual bilge pumps, a full marine head, running hot water, and refrigerator.

This boat is made of fiberglass with teak finishes and looks well kept. You can find this boat in Spain if you are interested in purchasing it.

5. 1973 Morgan Out Island 41

Originally designed by Charley Morgan, the Morgan Out Island 41 is a center cockpit shoal-draft cruiser that features two masts.

This larger boat is 41 feet 3 inches in length and features many amenities.

This boat is the tri-cabin version and features interior heating, pressurized hot and cold water, a 2 burner gas oven, and a fridge.

This boat also seats up to 7 in the 3 cabins and the saloon. There are also 2 full heads on this vessel.

This boat is even equipped with an inboard motor . Inboard motors are easier when it comes to navigation including backing up, which is generally hard for sailboats to do.

Price: $68,596.00

6. 1970 Hinckley Bermuda 40

twin masted catamaran

This 1970 Hinckley Bermuda 40 is a gorgeous two-masted boat painted with a mixture of desert sand and oyster white on the exterior and features a beautiful and well-kept deck.

This boat has previously had all her systems replaced and upgraded and features a 40 horsepower engine that was new in 2014.

This boat features a mahogany interior and sleeps up to 6 people in 2 cabins. You can also find a 3 burner propane stove with oven, fridge and compressor, new countertops and plenty of storage.

This boat is a stunning and highly upgraded “must-see” at a very reasonable price.

Price: $129,500.00

7. 1995 Amel Super Maramu

twin masted catamaran

A newer model of sailboat is the 1995 Amel Super Maramu sailboat. This sailboat has two masts and is very long at 53 feet.

This boat features an aft deck, steps molded right into the hull, well-protected cockpit an many other features. This boat has a large 76 horsepower engine which is more than the average sailboat is equipped with.

Inside, this boat features 2 cabins and 2 heads with showers. There is also plenty of storage, air conditioning , and electric heaters. There is also a nice salon and galley with a refrigerator, dishwasher, chest freezer, microwave oven, 3 burner stove, and other appliances.

This boat is great for multiple days out on the water and is new and updated. Because of the year, this was manufactured and the features, this boat has a larger price tag than the previous models.

Price: $299,990.00

Final Thoughts:

Sailboats are a great way to enjoy a day out at sea. Most sailboat models come with sleeping arrangements and even a kitchen. This makes them ideal for trips that will take more than a day.

Having multiple masts allows you to harness the power of the wind better and can increase your speed and directional capabilities.

There are many great choices when it comes to boats with two masts, but newer models are starting to steer away from double mast designs. This does not mean that you cannot get a good boat with two masts.

Used boats can be great choices when it comes to purchasing a boat. This is even more true with large, yacht boats such as the ones listed above.

Just make sure when you buy a used sailboat you check that everything is intact and in good working order and if it is not, you have allotted space in the budget to fix what is needed.

Your new double-masted sailboat should provide you with plenty of long-lasting memories and adventures out on the water while you connect with the wind and the sea.

12 of the coolest multihull superyachts

The market for multi-hull superyachts has skyrocketed in recent years as owners begin to favour the high volumes and superlative stability on offer. Once the novelty of a small group of owners, a recent slew of multi-hull concepts and the success of shipyards such as Sunreef has confirmed that two and three-hulled superyachts are well and truly on the up. We remember some of the most ground-breaking multi-hull launches...

White Rabbit

One of the coolest launches of 2018, the 84 metre White Rabbit is the largest trimaran in the world. She was built in fibreglass by Australian Yard Echo Yachts with exterior design by Sam Sorgiovanni and naval architecture by One2Three. White Rabbit was delivered to an experienced owner who owns a number of other multihull superyachts, including a 51 metre shadow catamaran, also built by Echo Yachts, which will be used as a support vessel; for the 84 metre trimaran.

More about this yacht

Inspired by Game of Thrones, the 66 metre shadow catamaran Hodor is a support vessel used to carry all the toys and tenders for her mothership. The vessel is fully custom and was designed by Incat Crowther. Hodor boasts five tenders, including a 17 metre chase boat and a 388 Skater powerboat with a top speed of 165 knots. Other toys include nine Jet Skis, two Yamaha ATCs, four Yamaha TW200 trail motorcycles and a three-person submarine.

A true icon,  Adastra was launched in 2012 by Australian yard McConaghy Yachts . With a length of 42.5 metres and a sleek Kevlar and GRP exterior, this space-age design is every bit as out-of-this-world as its name suggests. Made for exploring, an impressive 10,000 nautical mile range means she can cross the Atlantic twice before needing to refuel. A shallow draft of 1.2 metres allows her to access hard to reach anchorages and shallow bays too.

In 2011,  Hemisphere was launched as world’s largest sailing catamaran with an LOA of 44.2 metres - and she remains so to this day. Built for American owners who had previously chartered a catamaran in the Caribbean, this British yacht was a bespoke project by Pendennis . Fully kitted out for diving, Hemisphere ’s port hull contains a dive centre capable of refilling both air and Nitrox tanks.

Yachts for charter

Royal falcon one.

The 41.4 metre Royal Falcon One is a quirky catamaran launched in 2019. She was designed by Singapore-based Royal Falcon Fleet in collaboration with F.A Porsche Design Studio and built in Sweden by Kockums. Accommodation is for up to 10 guests in five spacious cabins, including a full beam master suite with its own private deck space. Crew are housed in the two hulls.

Yachts for sale

Launched in 2015,  Spirit is a 35 metre New Zealand Yachts powercat featuring  Ken Freivokh interiors and naval architecture by Bakewell-White Design . A perfect example of how catamarans can help to maximise the living space available, Spirit has the interior volume you might expect from a 45 metre monohull. Her unconventional looks will make her stand out from the crowd in her new home of Australia, but Spirit is just one of many striking multihull superyachts to have hit the water in recent years.

Pilar Rossi

Formula One racing legend Nelson Piquet’s yacht Pilar Rossi was built in Turkey as a modest 33 metre Alucraft motor yacht. But his uncle, a Brazilian naval architect, helped Piquet convert her into a 64 metre sailing trimaran by adding outriggers and two masts. The reborn trimaran can accommodate up to 18 guests.

Galaxy of Happiness

Unveiled to the world in May 2016, Galaxy of Happiness  is one of two 53 metre trimarans to be launched by Latvian yard Latitude Yachts . This multihull superyacht is built from a GRP and carbon fibre composite and is capable of a top speed of 30 knots. The interior, designed by Latitude Yachts and Jean-Jacques Coste , features an owner’s cabin and two guest cabins.

Launched in 2004, this Chinese catamaran from Pride Mega Yachts may look like a vision of the future, but the inspiration for Asean Lady is actually ancient. The twin hulled 88.15 metre yacht is based on the proa design that has been used for more than 2,000 years to build fishing boats in the Pacific region. Her stability was put to the test in December 2004 when she survived the Indian Ocean tsunami while moored off Phuket.

Flexibility is the key word that informed the design of the 33.7 metre  Quaranta . Launched at Turkish yard Logos Marine in 2013, this catamaran superyacht features the kind of interior volume more commonly associated with a 40 metre yacht. All six guest suites are located on the main deck and the absence of structural bulkheads means that they can easily be reconfigured. This innovative system helped Quaranta to win the catamaran award at the 2014 World Superyacht Awards .

Seven of the world's best catamaran superyachts.

Are two hulls better than one? If the array of new build and new concept catamarans are anything to go by, it’s a question the yachting industry appears to increasingly be asking.

Celebrity endorsement in the shape of Rafael Nadal has certainly helped raise awareness of the category, but beyond the tennis ace’s custom Sunreef 80 Power , more and more yacht owners are coming to see that cats are worthy of their attention: The twin hull design delivers larger volumes, greater stability, as well as increased efficiency and speed when compared to its monohull equivalent.

Beyond leisure cruising in shallow, tropical waters, today’s class of catamarans are being primed for global expeditions. The category is also shining bright with early prototypes demonstrating how yachting is going green, such as the hydrogen-fuel-cell-powered power-cat tender by America’s Cup team Emirates Team New Zealand.

From classic models to rugged explorers and support vessels to a hydrogen-fuel-cell-powered cat, here are seven stellar twin-hulled vessels that show how versatile the power-catamaran design can be.

Astilleros Armon’s ‘Wayfinder’

twin masted catamaran

The second big cat–following the stealth-like 217.2-foot Hodor–in the Incat Crowther ShadowCat series, Wayfinder launched from Spain’s Astilleros Armon in 2021 as a support vessel to a superyacht. It’s already been spotted in the Mediterranean, dutifully playing its supporting role to the mothership. At 223.8-feet long, and with a 45.9-foot beam, the shadow boat has extra storage space for the mothership, a games room and an outdoor area all rolled into one, with a collection of extra features including a helipad, helicopter hanger, spare parts workshop, medical facilities, a flower room and a pickleball court. There is also space for a main crew of 18, with extra space for 14 supplemental crew or service staff.

Silver Yachts’ ‘SpaceCat’

twin masted catamaran

In October 2022, SpaceCat emerged from Silver Yachts in Fremantle, Western Australia, the first multihull delivery from the Australian yacht builder behind the naval-styled explorer yacht Bold. Like the yard’s monohulls, the superyacht bears the signature of yacht designer Espen Øino who has described the category as the “SUV” of the sea for its potential to first divide opinion and then perhaps dominate the market. A compact 118.1-foot length hides an impressive 4,306 square feet of space across the tri-deck configuration; the largest being the 2,174 square-foot main deck. The series has been designed with owners who may want to own more than one. “The yachts could be positioned on three main continents; one in Asia, one in the Mediterranean, and one in the Caribbean, avoiding any hassle of repositioning and non-availability to use the vessel,” said the shipyard said in a statement at SpaceCat’ s launch.

Abeking & Rasmussen’s ‘Nurja’

twin masted catamaran

When delivered in 2008, the 134.6-foot Silver Cloud stood out for its amphibian appearance and full-width helipad on the upper deck, but what attracted the most attention was her swath (small waterplane area twin-hulled) design, the first time such a concept had been seen in the superyacht fleet. The owner chose Abeking & Rasmussen for the build for a reason. He was impressed by the German yard’s proven success with the swath platform in its military and commercial builds. He believed the stability would offer an antidote to his wife’s seasickness, an assumption that was proven correct. In December 2020, the yacht changed hands and is now known as Nurja .

Sunreef’s 80 Eco

twin masted catamaran

At last year’s Monaco Yacht Show, the largest yacht may have been Lürssen’s sleek 378-foot motoryacht Ahpo but, across the port, a catamaran less than a quarter of the size was turning just as many heads. With over 1,700 square feet of solar panels seamlessly integrated into her hull, superstructure, mast and bimini roof, the 80-foot Sunreef 80 Eco is a vision of the future, with fully electric propulsion for silent cruising. Along with smart innovations, including a rainwater collection system for washing down the deck and the ability to use her solar panels to heat up the boiler, there’s also plenty of proof that going green doesn’t mean compromising on luxury: The interiors are finished with sustainable materials, including natural fabrics and salvaged teak to reach the exacting standards of superyacht comfort.

twin masted catamaran

Equipped with an electric-hybrid drive system, as well as both solar panels and hydr0-generation technology to top up battery power, the French-built Windelo 50 Adventure can reach both the wilds of Patagonia and the palm trees of the Pacific Islands at minimal cost to the environment. Scratch the surface of its classic catamaran aesthetic for more eco-friendly innovations like a hull constructed from a composite material of basalt and PET foam from recycled plastic bottles. These upcycled materials reduce carbon emissions by almost 50 percent compared to traditional materials. The interiors haven’t been ignored either: It’s a modern, functional design emphasizing sustainably sourced wood. The first of this series earned a special mention for sustainability at the European Yacht of the Year 2022 awards.

Profab Central Engineering’s ‘The Beast’

twin masted catamaran

With its thick gray, geometric stripes that stand out against the endless blue of the South Pacific of its home waters, there’s nothing inconspicuous about The Beast . Delivered in 2019 by New Zealand’s Profab Central Engineering, the 128.7-foot vessel is billed as the ultimate adventure charter yacht, equipped with scuba diving equipment, wakeboards, SUPs, a waterbike and even a 42.7-foot sport fishing vessel called Baby Beast. The twin-hull design adds to its personality, says its charter manager, Ben Osborne from 37South in Auckland, New Zealand. “The extra volume allows The Beast to carry larger tenders and more equipment—setting it up perfectly for exploration—style cruising, while not sacrificing on the interior spaces,” he told Robb Report . The interior is styled like a Manhattan bachelor pad and can sleep 12 guests in five cabins.

Silent 120 Explorer

twin masted catamaran

Proof that 007-style toys are no longer the sole domain of football pitch-sized yachts, the Silent 120 Explorer’s onboard stash includes a U-Boat Worx Nemo submarine and Xcraft eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) aircraft. And, true to sustainable super-spy form, rooftop solar panels slide open to reveal a smartly concealed e-VTOL touch-and-go landing pad. A generous 45.4-foot beam—plus the space saved by its solar and electric propulsion systems—is what makes such cool cruising extras possible on a boat of this size. Another of the new wave of cats designed for carbon-free adventure cruising, this latest project builds on the Austrian company’s previous all-electric launches, such as the Silent 60. The first 120 Explorer is set to hit the water in 2024.

euro 1460 bi plane catamaran external cad render schionning designs port bow

Twin-mast catamaran being built for Whitsundays cruising

Schionning-designed bi-plane catamaran to feature lightweight build and electric propulsion.

A new breed of cruising catamaran will soon take to the waters around the Whitsundays, featuring a sail on each hull.

The 14.9-metre-long and 8.0-metre-wide Schionning Euro 1480 Bi-Plane catamaran, based on a Jeff Shionning design, features a sail on each hull that as well as greatly simplifying the rigging, also increases the amount of useable space on the bridgedeck.

The boat, named Ad Astra , is being built at Whitsundays-based Liquid Force Marine for Mackay-based Kevin Berry, who plans to charter the boat during peak season. It will also feature electric as well as wind propulsion, using a pair of lithium-ion batteries energised via 6kW solar panels mounted on the roof to power electric motors on each hull.

“It will be a performance cruiser for personal use, designed with our family in mind, but with all the features required for charter – six berths, large owner’s cabin, huge social spaces as well as plenty of privacy,” Berry said.

“It’s definitely a step up from production vessels.”

The catamaran’s interior features a full-beam main cabin with ensuite and large windows forward on the bridgedeck, and a walk-around galley aft leading out to a large cockpit.

Two queen-size cabins are below decks in each hull, each with ensuite, while a smaller crew berth is located forward.

The catamaran’s build will be a long process. Work started in January, with the boat expected to be on the water by December next year.

Whitsundays-based Liquid Force Marine director David Morris said building a vessel to survey and ASMA compliance added more layers and complexities to the process.

“The Schionning design is ideal for charter,” Morris said.

“It’s open, spacious, modern-looking and stable, and has a unique rig plan for more deck and cabin space.”

The boat only weighs 1000kg, with its construction featuring DuFLEX composite panels with Divinycell foam panels to create a lightweight sandwich, and joined using a technique that glues together the composite panels using heat and pressure to cure the glue.

Morris heads up a team of three boat builders and aims to add four extra staff once the main part of the build starts.

If you want to live on the sea, catamarans are probably the most comfortable way of doing it. Unlike monohulls, catamarans have two hulls, giving you a smooth sailing experience and more interior space. There are tons of small catamarans, each with its pros and cons.

The smallest cruising/liveaboard sailing catamaran is the Smart Cat S280. With a length overall of 27.9 feet (8.5 meters), it offers the most economical and spacious living area you can find on any liveaboard catamaran today.

In this article, I’ll talk about the Smart Cat S280, and then ill show you alternatives. This article is meant to give you examples of boats that might be interesting and it’s a jumping-off point for further research into what suits you the best.

Table of Contents

How To Pick a Small Catamaran

Small catamarans are great if you’re on a budget. They’re also ideal if you want a modest space without too much going on inside. However, every small-size catamaran varies in features and design. So, if you’re looking for one, there are a few essential factors you have to bear in mind.

Performance

When choosing a catamaran , your decision depends on what level of performance you need from the boat. Your choice will often come from what you’re going to use the boat for.

However, the performance of a catamaran is a critical factor for safety as well. For example, the sail plan significantly affects the catamaran’s stability offshore.

Some performance features you have to keep in mind when choosing a catamaran include:

  • Average Speed upwind and downwind
  • How much weight can be loaded before performance is impacted

Interior Layout

Despite their size, small catamarans come with a variety of living spaces. In between the hulls, you’ll find different types of amenities, including a kitchen, lounge, and dining area.

Every catamaran comes with a unique arrangement for its cabins. Usually, you’ll also have cabins in the two hulls and sometimes a master cabin on the deck. The deck may also have a sitting space with trampoline areas to relax.

The cabins on a catamaran are sometimes referred to as berths. Manufacturers modify one or two berths to make a bathroom with a toilet and showerhead or “head.”

Exterior Design

The interior features are essential because they determine not only your living condition while onboard but also how easily the boat can be sailed, are all lines drawn to the cockpit?

Now that we know how to choose sailing catamarans, let’s look at the smallest liveaboard catamarans on the market today, starting with the most compact one.

Smart Cat S280: The Smallest Liveaboard Catamaran

The Smart Cat S280 is the smallest catamaran on the market today. The Korean-made catamaran offers a mix of space, shallow sailing, and affordability.

At the 2020 Miami Boat Show, the starting price of the Smart Cat S280 was $149,900.

It runs on a 19.8 Yamaha HorsePower engine with a 50 Horse Power option. Depending on your location, you can drop down or lift the engine out of the water. It holds a 102-liter (26.94-gallon) fuel tank and a 135-liter (35.66-gallon) water tank.

The open hard-top version is ideal for summer sailing and boat parties. The cat is also available in a closed “house” version, allowing more privacy and climate protection.

The boat features three queen-sized berths, office space, and a kitchen area. It has two living configurations:

  • Three cabins and one head
  • Two cabins and two heads

Each cabin berth has a double-sized bed. The bathroom contains a sink, a head and handheld shower, and an electric toilet. The wide lounge area with two trampolines can accommodate at least four seating positions. It also contains a drop-down anchor with an electric windlass.

The interior is fitted with broad windows and drop-down blinds, cabinet lockers, tour-size hanging closets, and LED step lights to guide you when lights are dim. It also has an 18,000 BTU air conditioning system controlled from the inside. The ceiling has a vinyl finishing, an upgrade from the carpet fabric finishing in previous models.

The kitchen space comes with storage cabinets, a DC 12 V 50-liter (13.2-gallon) refrigerator, enclosed refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, electric stove burner, and a sink. It is wired with a Fusion audio system that includes two speakers.

The Smart Cat S280 supplies hot water to the kitchen and bathroom, thanks to an AC 120 V 6-gallon water heater. The head floor is wooden, while the cockpit has a patterned Seadek floor.

The boat has a VHF radio, a Garmin sail pack navigation package, and a Garmin GPS Chart Plotter. It also includes wind speed and direction equipment, a depth sounder, and a compass. The rigging is performed with a steering wheel.

Specifications

The dimensions of the Smart Cat S280 are:

Max Bridge Clearance46.2 feet (14.08 meters)
Max Draft2.82 feet (0.85 meters)
Beam17.4 feet (5.3 meters)
Length Overall27.9 feet (8.5 meters)
