A boat has capsized in northwest Nigeria drowning at least 40 people

ABUJA, Nigeria -- A boat carrying mostly farmers capsized on a river in northwest Nigeria, drowning at least 40 people, President Bola Tinub u said Sunday.

The accident happened in Zamfara state, as farmers were trying to get to their land, Tinubu said in a statement. The president promised support for the victims and directed emergency agencies to assess the incident.

Yazid Abubakar, a police spokesperson in Zamfara, told The Associated Press the accident happened on Saturday and that five people were rescued, but 40 are still missing. It was not immediately clear how many people were on the boat when it went down.

The boat was carrying mostly farmers who use the crossing regularly to sell produce at the markets and locals say they’re often overloaded.

Zamfara state is rampant with armed groups who kidnap for ransom, steel cattle and engage in illegal mining.

Boat accidents are common in remote communities across Nigeria because of overloading and boats that are in poor condition.

In August, more than 20 people died in a boat accident on a river in southern Nigeria after the engine exploded.

Most boats don’t carry life jackets or have proper safety measures in place, say locals.

Serious injuries in Southland jet boat crash

A police spokesman said the incident happened near Mavora about 4.20pm, when the boat hit a rock.

Four people were believed to have been in the boat at the time of the crash.

One person received a serious leg injury, and another person received a minor head injury and was taken to Southland Hospital, in Invercargill.

I visited the Amalfi Coast during a EuroTrip with girlfriends and we added a boat trip from Positano to Capri to our plans and it was the best decision! This boat company provided us with excellent service and Giuseppe and his assistant were very friendly and welcoming. We were offered food and drinks on the boat and given the option to eat lunch in Capri and see multiple grottos, including the beautiful Grotta Azzurra. It was awesome to be able to jump and swim in the ocean while avoiding the crowds on the beach! Highly recommend to include this boat excursion in your stay in the Amalfi Coast!

We have had to cancel our trip to Italy and had paid in full for our boat trip to Isle of Capri. On notifying Aldo he did not hesitate to allow us to put our booking forward to next year. We were picked up from our hotel in Sorrento and driven down to Marina Grande where our private boat arrived. Had a great time onboard, towels and prosecco provided and plenty of room to relax and sunbathe. Our skipper recommend a great place for lunch on Capri which we both enjoyed. "SNL" star Colin Jost got candid about his decision to buy a Staten Island Ferry vessel with his former co-star Pete Davidson.

In 2022, Jost, 42, Davidson, 30, and comedy club owner Paul Italia and developer Ron Castellano bought the decommissioned ferry launched in 1965 - the MV John F. Kennedy - at a New York auction for $280,000 with plans to turn it into the Big Apple's hottest nightclub. 

During a recent interview with People magazine, Jost, who noted that he considers himself to be a "conservative" spender, shared his regrets over the investment.

"It is absolutely the dumbest and least thought-through purchase I've ever made in my life," Jost said while speaking to People at the Tommy Hilfiger show during New York Fashion Week, which was held on the vessel.

He continued: "The way I justified it is for the amount of money we were putting into buying it, on just a basic square-footage level, is if you found the right place for it to be, you were essentially buying a building on its side that's 65,000 square feet. So around New York, that is a very good price per square foot."

Jost acknowledged that there has been minimal movement to renovate and run the historic ferry in the two years since he made the purchase with Davidson and Italia.

While speaking with People, he explained that the three investors haven't been able to dedicate much time to the project since they have been too busy with their full-time careers on land.

Jost also noted that running the vessel would require hiring a staff, which he said is a responsibility that he wasn't certain if he wanted to take on.

A few months after making the purchase, the Staten Island native was photographed setting sail from St. George Ferry Terminal for the first time. However, he told People that the partners' insurance company would probably be against future joyrides.

"Maybe they would love it because it would get them out of the contract," Jost quipped. "But it requires a lot of people to move it."

Jost recalled that his wife, actress Scarlett Johansson , reacted with disbelief when he first shared that he was thinking of buying the ferry, but she has since come around and thinks that he and his partners should make the most of it.

"She was just like, 'Wait, so you own this boat now?' Very fair question," Jost said. "She now obviously sees the value in it, but also I think she's like, 'It's now become something that is a defining thing for you guys and an interesting thing for you guys. So you should take it seriously and figure out the best version of it, because for better or worse, it's going to reflect on you.' We don't care because we're comedians."

One of the comedian's other partners on the project, Castellano, revealed in a March interview that the ferry will be converted into a floating hotel with 24 rooms, two restaurants and six bars.

"It’s going to have a lot of things," Castellano told Curbed of the $34 million venue project.

Castellano also shared that the ferry could be towed between New York and Miami.

"I think that’s exactly still the plan. It doesn’t have to be in one place. It can move, so we’re exploring both locations," he explained.

However, Jost told People that he would prefer that New York remain the ferry's permanent home.

Information for:

Your SRL certificate is valid for five years.

SRL is an entry-level command certificate with engineering components. With SRL, you can perform a skipper’s (master’s) functions and duties on:

• passenger and non-passenger ships less than 12 metres length overall, carrying up to 19 passengers within restricted limits (which includes both enclosed and inshore limits)
• fishing vessels less than 12 metres length overall, in enclosed, inshore and inshore fishing limits.

From SRL, you can obtain endorsements that enable you to command larger ships, carry more passengers and/or operate in specific areas.

Requirements

Before you spend time doing sea service and training, we recommend you check that you can meet the medical fitness and eyesight standards (including for colour vision), and that you understand the fit and proper person requirements.

A summary of the requirements for this certificate is provided below. You need to meet all of these requirements to get your SRL certificate.

• prove that you meet the minimum sea service requirements
• complete and pass the approved qualification for SRL
• have current certificates for the required ancillary proficiencies
• pass Maritime NZ’s final exam
• prove that you are a fit and proper person
• be medically fit and have good eyesight
• be at least 18 years old.

The application fee for this certificate is $368, which includes goods and services tax (GST).

Application process

This is the application process for this certificate of competency.

1. Do you meet all the requirements?

• You need to check that you meet all of the requirements for this certificate.

2. Do you have the documents we need?

You need to prove that you meet the requirements. Include all of the documents we have asked for with your application form. Use the checklist in the guideline to help you.

Remember we need copies, not the originals.

3. Send us your application by courier or email

There are two options for you to send your application:

• Send your application by email , attaching the scanned documents. The application form has information about the requirements for electronic copies.
• Use a courier to send us your completed application forms, supporting documents.

The addresses are on the application form.

4. Confirmation and/or request sent

We will send you an email or letter to confirm that we have received your application and advise you of any documents we need from you before we can assess your application.

We must receive your payment before we can finalise your application.

5. Assessment and payment of application fee

Once you have sent us all the documents we need, we will assess your application and make a decision. 

We will send you an invoice with your reference number and information on how to pay the application fee once we begin the assessment. Please note we cannot release your certificate unless payment has been received.

6. Issue certificate

We will send you:

• your certificate, if your application has been successful, or
• a letter or email explaining why your application was unsuccessful.
