Welcome aboard, get to know the royal bombay yacht club.

Ahoy there! Welcome to the Royal Bombay Yacht Club (RBYC) – the crown jewel of Mumbai’s maritime scene. Nestled against the panoramic backdrop of the Arabian Sea, this club isn’t just a place; it’s a passage through time, where every sail hoisted carries a piece of history.

Table of Contents

Since 1846, the RBYC has been more than a landmark; it’s a home for sea lovers and a hub for sailing aficionados. If you’ve ever dreamed of skimming the waves in style or sipping tea while watching ships glide by, you’re in the right spot. Let’s embark on a journey through the club’s storied halls and vibrant waters.

Club Origins

How the royal bombay yacht club began.

It all started with a group of British officers and merchants who shared a passion for the sea. They laid the foundation for what would become a sanctuary for Mumbai’s yachting community. The Royal in its name? That’s no mere decoration – it’s a badge of honor bestowed by Queen Victoria herself.

From British Rule to Modern Times

The club has sailed through eras, witnessed India’s journey to independence, and evolved without ever losing its original charm. It stands today as a testament to the time when it first unfurled its sails, proudly facing the Gateway of India, a companion piece in history.

Step into the RBYC and you step into a world where architecture sings of an elegant past. Its Venetian Gothic design, interlaced with elements of Indian aesthetics, makes the club a visual feast, as delightful to the eyes as the sea is to the sailors.

The Story Behind the Club’s Style

Every archway and window pane at the RBYC whispers tales of the days of yore. Designed to impress, the club’s structure is a cherished piece of Mumbai’s architectural legacy, inviting members and guests to wander through its history-laden corridors.

The Sailing Community

Meet the club’s sailors.

The real treasure of the RBYC isn’t just its majestic sails or historic walls; it’s the vibrant community that animates its premises. Here, bonds are forged over shared adventures, and stories are passed down like precious heirlooms.

Learn to Sail at the Club

Dream of conquering the waves? The club’s seasoned instructors will turn that dream into reality with classes that cater to every level, from the greenest of landlubbers to seasoned skippers looking to polish their tacks and jibes.

Dress Codes and Club Rules

At the RBYC, tradition is dressed in finery. Adherence to the dress code isn’t just about looking good; it’s about honoring the club’s storied past. So don your best and revel in the elegance that this institution upholds.

What’s Happening at the Club

The club’s calendar is a carousel of events, each one a chance to dive into the club’s social whirlpool. Whether it’s a high-stakes regatta or a laid-back evening soiree, there’s always something stirring the waters at the RBYC.

Wrapping Up

Why we love the royal bombay yacht club.

As our journey through the RBYC comes to a close, one thing is clear: this isn’t just a club; it’s a gateway to an ocean of memories. It’s a place where the spirit of sailing and the pulse of Mumbai merge into a wave of unforgettable experiences.

The Sailor's Style Guide: How to Dress at a Yacht Club

If you've been invited to a casual yacht club rendezvous, you'll need the right threads to fit in.  in this guide, we'll walk you through the yacht club attire you'll need to fit in. hint: you can find the perfect outfit head to toe with castaway.

You've been invited to a meal or event at a local yacht club, but you've never been to one before. Suddenly, the panic sets in. What should you wear? Fortunately, there are lots of options and visiting a yacht club does not mean you have to spend a lot of money just to fit in. This post will give you some pointers on yacht club attire so that you feel neither under nor overdressed, and can really enjoy yourself and have a great time at the club.

Before you even think about what to wear, check to see if the yacht club you're going to has a dress code posted online. Most of them do, and the rules can vary from club to club. The Nantucket Yacht Club , for example, requires semi-formal attire for its dinners and cocktail attire including ties for men during its dinner dances and balls. The Hyannis Yacht Club goes into a little more detail. It accepts stylish casual wear including clean, neat jeans and shorts for lunch. For dinner, guests are expected to step it up by leaving the denim at home and wearing sports coats. Different areas of a club may also have different dress rules. Bars and outdoor decks tend to more lax and allow casual clothing.

Sometimes, the easiest way of narrowing down what to wear is to eliminate what you should not wear. This is just a partial list of how not to show up at any kind of yacht club unless you want to be denied admittance or receive a lot of disapproving glares. All rules listed apply to the inside of the club, and can vary for beach and dock rulings.

Flip Flops or Going Barefoot: This rule applies INSIDE the club, or for any meal time. Most people love the beach, but going barefoot is not only unacceptable, but unhygienic.

You'll want to wear appropriate footwear such as sturdy sandals or closed toe shoes. While a lot of children and adults love their flip-flops, they may be a little too casual for a yacht club atmosphere. The most popular choice here is a boat shoe style but a bridle bit driver is always appropriate - check the latest . The lightly worn leather and pencil-curled laces fit the bill in the cool department.

Torn, Stained, or Worn Clothing: Any attire that is showing signs of wear such as rips, stains that never came out, holes, missing buttons, etc. should be left at home.

Baseball Caps and Other Hats: Most yacht clubs prefer that men remove their caps when inside the venue. Save them for the sailing excursions.

Extra points on the water if you rock the Club’s Burgee on the hat!

Swimwear: Just a no-no. Save it for the boat and the beach. A cover-up can be acceptable for the patio.

Going Shirtless: Nope!

Undershirts as Shirts: See above. You may also want to be careful about choosing a t-shirt, particularly one with graphics, when visiting a yacht club. Most prefer that you wear a collared shirt, even if it's a casual one such as a polo shirt.

Tank tops for men and any tank tops for women that are skimpy and don't hide undergarments should be saved for another occasion.

Women have a lot of options when it comes to visiting a yacht club. Linen and cotton make the perfect summer blouses. A light but structured Sleeveless Top paired with a  sweater is perfect for warding off cool sea breezes when you're out on the deck. A polo or collared shirt works well for the yacht club scene as well. You can also consider a dressy blouse that has a little bit of flounce to it. If shorts are allowed for the time and area of the club you're visiting, consider sporting  Sailing  shorts  with a cute anchor embroidery. They're cool, classy, and show off just the right amount of leg. Casual skirts and dresses are perfectly fine as well as long as they're not too short and revealing. If you're attending a party at a yacht club you may need to wear a nice cocktail dress, or a classic Tunic Dress for a day event. Special events such as balls and dinner dances usually specify what is appropriate attire on the invitation.

Don't forget to have fun with accessories! A straw handbag can complete a nautical themed look.

For most casual yacht club occasions, men can't go wrong with a collared shirt and long pants or Cisco Shorts . Pastel and preppy shades such as summer green, hurricane red, and islander blue rule here.

When casual attire is allowed, collared sport or polo shirts are always in fashion. Seersucker and linen shirts are available in several colors and patterns for summer club get-togethers. If jeans are not allowed, seersucker or cotton canvas pants are still casual and comfortable yet dressy enough for all areas of a yacht club. If you really want to show your love of nautical dressing, consider wearing a fun Embroidered Pant !

Or you can opt for solid pants but add some nautical flair with an embroidered belt . Classic summer staples like Seersucker and Madras Patches will make you the talk of the Club, in a good way!

For those chilly sea breezes and evenings, a quarter zip pullover wards off the cool air while keeping you stylish and casual.

It's a good idea to keep a sportcoat and a few ties in your closet just in case the yacht club you're visiting requires it. Opt for a fun all over embroidered jacket, or a Madras Patchwork style to really up your game.

Kids' clothing should conform to the same yacht club rules as established for grown-up guests. If you really want your son to look cute, consider dressing him in the same matching outfit as dad.

Dress for Yacht Club Party: From Formal to Casual Elegance

Stepping into a yacht club is like entering a world where tradition and luxury blend seamlessly. It’s a place where the dress code matters just as much as the knots you can tie. I’ve always been fascinated by the elegance and the unspoken rules that govern these exclusive enclaves.

Navigating the yacht club dress code can be a bit like charting unknown waters. You want to fit in, yet stand out; respect tradition, yet showcase your personal style. It’s a delicate balance, but don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. From crisp linens to the perfect boat shoes, I’ll walk you through what to wear to make a splash without rocking the boat.

Understanding Yacht Club Culture

Importance of dress code in yacht clubs, essential clothing items for men and women, footwear and accessories etiquette, navigating formal vs. informal events, frequently asked questions.

When I first stepped into the world of yacht clubs, I was struck by the intricate blend of tradition and modern luxury that permeates these spaces. Yacht clubs aren’t just about boats; they’re about a lifestyle that values elegance, camaraderie, and respect for the sea. The culture within these clubs is rich with history, and understanding it is crucial for anyone looking to blend in seamlessly.

At the heart of yacht club culture is a strong sense of community. Members often share a deep passion for sailing and the ocean, which fosters a unique bond. This camaraderie is evident in the warm welcomes I’ve received and the shared stories of adventure at sea. It’s this sense of community that makes the yacht club experience so enriching.

Another cornerstone of yacht club culture is the respect for tradition. Many clubs have histories that stretch back over a century, with traditions that have been passed down through generations. From the specific flags flown to the ceremonies performed, these traditions help connect members to the storied past of their club.

Understanding the dress code is an integral part of embracing yacht club culture. The attire reflects the balance between formality and the laid-back sea lifestyle. Here’s a quick guide to help navigate through the essentials:

Formal Events Blazer, slacks, tie Cocktail dress
Casual Gatherings Polo shirt, chinos Blouse, skirt or slacks
On The Water Performance gear, shorts Performance gear, shorts

Embracing yacht club culture means more than just adhering to a dress code—it’s about immersing yourself in a lifestyle that values grace, tradition, and a shared love for the sea. As I’ve ventured through this world, my appreciation for these principles has only deepened, enriching my experiences both on and off the water.

The dress code at yacht clubs isn’t just about looking good—it’s a way to show respect for the traditions and values that these clubs hold dear. Over the years, I’ve come to understand that adhering to these attire guidelines is integral to the yachting experience, blending the elegance of sailing with a sense of belonging among members.

Yacht clubs are steeped in history, with many having been established over a century ago. As a member or guest, dressing appropriately is a nod to the rich traditions and the high standards these clubs maintain. It’s not just about the clothes; it’s about being part of a community that values grace and decorum.

At first glance, the dress code might seem daunting. However, it’s really about understanding the importance of various events and activities within the club. For example, casual attire may be acceptable during the day, while evenings often require more formal wear, especially at club dinners or special events.

To make things easier, here’s a quick guide:

Occasion Men’s Attire Women’s Attire
Daytime Casual Polo shirts, shorts, boat shoes Sundresses, blouses, sandals
Evening Formal Blazers, dress shirts, trousers Dresses, skirts, dress shoes

This guide is a starting point, but always check with the specific yacht club for their particular dress code as nuances can vary greatly.

Remember, the essence of adhering to the dress code lies not just in following rules but in embracing the lifestyle. It reflects a shared respect among members for the club’s history, traditions, and the very spirit of yachting. Walking through the club doors dressed appropriately, I always feel a stronger connection to both the past and present of the seafaring community, reinforcing that the dress code is more than attire—it’s about belonging.

When it comes to yacht club attire, both men and women must be mindful of selecting pieces that strike the right balance between elegance and comfort. It’s not just about making a fashion statement but about adhering to a tradition that has been cherished for generations. Here’s a breakdown of the must-have clothing items for men and women to ensure you’re always yacht-club-ready.

For men, the essentials are somewhat straightforward but require attention to detail. A crisp, button-down shirt is non-negotiable. Whether it’s for a casual daytime event or a more formal evening gathering, a high-quality, well-fitted shirt sets the tone. Pair it with chino shorts or trousers depending on the occasion. Here’s a quick glance at the essentials:

Button-Down Shirt Daytime & Evening
Chino Shorts Casual & Daytime
Trousers Formal & Evening
Blazers Formal Events
Boat Shoes All Occasions

For women, versatility is key. A chic, midi-length sundress serves well for most daytime activities, offering both comfort and style. For evenings, women might opt for a more structured cocktail dress. Accessories should be understated yet sophisticated, complementing the outfit without overshadowing it.

Sundress Casual & Daytime
Cocktail Dress Evening & Formal
Tailored Blazers Formal Events
Wedges or Sandals All occasions

Understanding the significance of these items isn’t just about following rules; it’s about embracing a lifestyle that respects the legacy and luxury of yachting. Dress codes at yacht clubs are more than a list of what to wear—they’re a testament to the club’s history, values, and the collective spirit of its members. By preparing your wardrobe with these essentials, you’re not just dressing for the occasion. You’re paying homage to a tradition that has been the cornerstone of yacht clubs around the world.

Selecting the right footwear and accessories is just as crucial as choosing your outfit for a yacht club event. In the world of yachting, where tradition meets contemporary luxury, every detail counts in making that impeccable impression.

When it comes to footwear , both comfort and style take the helm. For men, leather loafers or boat shoes are the gold standard, effortlessly blending with the semi-formal attire expected at most yacht clubs. Women, on the other hand, have a bit more latitude, with options ranging from sophisticated sandals to elegant wedges. The key is ensuring your shoes complement your outfit while also being practical for walking on deck.

Accessories serve as the final flourish to your yacht club ensemble. For men, a classic watch or a tastefully simple bracelet can add a touch of refinement without overshadowing the overall look. Women can elevate their outfit with statement jewelry, a stylish hat, or a chic clutch. However, remember the golden rule: less is more. It’s all about enhancing your appearance without going overboard.

Here are some quick reference tables to guide your choices:

Men’s Footwear and Accessories

Footwear Accessories
Leather Loafers Classic Watch
Boat Shoes Simple Bracelet
Footwear Accessories
Sophisticated Sandals Statement Jewelry
Elegant Wedges Stylish Hat
Chic Clutch

Adhering to a yacht club’s dress code isn’t merely about following rules—it’s about honoring a tradition that values sophistication and camaraderie among its members. By paying close attention to the nuances of footwear and accessory choices, I’m not just dressing to impress; I’m embracing a lifestyle that respects the refined and convivial spirit of the yachting community. In every piece I select, I’m mindful of the balance between personal expression and the elegance that the setting demands.

Understanding the distinction between formal and informal events at yacht clubs is paramount in selecting the appropriate outfit. Each type of event comes with its own set of expectations, which I’ll help you decode.

Formal Events

At formal events, polished elegance is the key. Men should lean towards dark suits or tuxedos , depending on the specific requirements mentioned in the invite. For women, evening gowns or sophisticated cocktail dresses are the norm. Footwear should be equally refined, with men opting for shiny dress shoes and women choosing elegant heels .

Quick Reference: Formal Attire

For Men For Women
Dark Suits/Tuxedos Evening Gowns/Cocktail Dresses
Shiny Dress Shoes Elegant Heels
Minimalist Accessories Delicate Jewelry

Informal Events

Informal events, on the other hand, allow for more personal expression while still adhering to the overarching theme of tastefulness. Here, men can opt for smart casuals like chinos paired with a crisp shirt. Women have the freedom to experiment with flowy dresses or elegant tops and skirts . Comfortable yet stylish footwear such as loafers for men and sandals or wedges for women is recommended.

For Men For Women
Chinos with Crisp Shirts Flowy Dresses or Elegant Tops with Skirts
Loafers Sandals or Wedges
Casual Watches Statement Accessories

Both settings underscore the importance of attention to detail. Accessories, whether for a formal or informal event, should complement but not overshadow the outfit. Understanding these nuances ensures respect for yacht club traditions while allowing room for individual flair.

Navigating yacht club dress codes doesn’t have to be daunting. By grasping the fine line between formal and informal attire and paying close attention to accessories, you’re well on your way to mastering yacht club chic. Whether it’s a dark suit for the men or an evening gown for the ladies at formal events or smart casuals and flowy dresses for those more laid-back gatherings, the key is to dress tastefully while allowing your personal style to shine through. Remember, understanding and respecting these dress codes is not just about fitting in—it’s about making a statement while honoring tradition. So next time you’re preparing for a yacht club event, you’ll do so with confidence and ease.

Just wondering if anyone can advise what the dress code is like in the Yacht Club on MSC

Does it follow the suggested dress code of the rest of the ship or does it have a separate dress code?

Also, is the dress code on MSC still 'suggested'

Hey   Just wondering if anyone can advise what the dress code is like in the Yacht Club on MSC   Does it follow the suggested dress code of the rest of the ship or does it have a separate dress code?   Also, is the dress code on MSC still 'suggested'   Thanks

The dress code on all MSC ships is advisory and is published in the daily programme. The dress code is the same throughout the ship.

The YC is not a prison you are allowed to escape and mingle with "steerage". So no worries on the dress code. Do as you want

The dress code follows the rest of the ship, however on Formal Nights the people in YC tend to dress more formally (i.e. tux for men). I felt a bit underdressed the on our first cruise in YC so the next one I took evening wear with me. However this was on European and TA cruises, I suspect that on Divina out of Miami it may be more relaxed. I think evening wear is more of a European thing?? Even so, it's nice to dressed up for these occasions.

See this thread:- http://boards.cruisecritic.co.uk/showthread.php?t=2430722

My experience in the YC on formal nights is somewhat different. We have sailed there three times and I haven't seen much difference in what men wear there compared to the rest of the ship. There were only a couple of tuxes, many suits and ties, some with suits and/sport jackets with open collared shirts and one or two men with jeans.

Yes, as I said, probably a more casual attitude on U.S. based cruises. Maybe the Divina should get it's own forum as it seems to differ from the other MSC ships???????

Not a bad idea. I would also like to see the Yacht Club get it's own forum. People's thoughts and reviews of the YC often differ greatly than those of the rest of the ship.

Thanks for all your comments it's good to understand. Having sailed with Royal over the last 4 years and not MSC I'm use to the very relaxed dress code on Royal

Your observation of dress 'code' in the Yacht Club tracks right along with ours.

We might have been on the same two Divina cruises this year. :)

Seperate forum for YC sounds like a great idea.

The dress in the Yacht Club whether on casual or gala evenings is no different from the rest of the ship. Jeans are fine on casual nights and suits or sport jackets the norm for the gala occasions. True formal wear is actually seen less in Yacht Club from what I saw on my two YC cruises.

Just got off the Divina this morning and I would second this post. On our Gala night's, the majority on men were in suits or sports jackets with a couple tux's and a couple of men wearing jeans and a t-shirt.

I realize I'm reactivating a year-old thread, but I didn't want to start a new one when much of this concern has been addressed. However, a part that doesn't seem to get much attention: What do women and men who book Yacht Club cabins/suites wear during the day while in the Yacht Club? For men, are dress shorts and golf shirts appropriate? Are dress shorts and t-shirts okay? I've seen a number of photos in which men are wearing slacks and button-down shirts. While I certainly don't want to stand out for under-dressing, I'd hate to make myself conspicuous by over-dressing. Plus, I'll be on vacation, so a break from a daytime suit-and-tie will be great!

Also, our cabin is 15021. How will we get up to The One pool deck? Is there an elevator, or will we be taking stairs from the Yacht Club? Is it okay to pass through the Club wearing swim trunks and a t-shirt on the way to the pool?

Really no different from the rest of the ship. Shorts and T shirts are fine for daytime.

From your cabin to the One Pool Deck is easy peasy, walk down the hall and just outside of the Concierge is the elevator up to One Pool (or down to the Spa). Only goes from Deck 14 to Deck 18 for Yacht Club passengers.

It's the same but you don't have to follow it.

I wholeheartedly agree. Why take up the time of others looking for info. It should be a sub-category.

DH wore sorts and t shirts during the day. If you are sailing from Miami the dress standard is considerably more casual, even in the evenings than on European sailings.

We have a 7-day cruise on the Seaside leaving next Saturday, 13 April 2019, and we're staying in the YC. I really don't want to pack anything formal (sport coats, ties, etc.) Is it really a necessity on a Caribbean cruise?  We can go to specialty restaurants on formal nights without formal attire I assume. The dress code would apply only to main dining rooms whether in YC on main part of ship. Correct me if I'm wrong. TIA

No, you do not need formal clothes in the YC or any place else for that matter. Based on my experience in the YC last December, I did not feel out of place wearing the same type of clothes any of seven nights. I did take a tie just encase we decided to get our picture taken. I wore it the last formal night, at least it did not take much room to pack.

Agree,,,, If you dress smart casual... you will blend right in with the majority of YC diners. On our cruise last year...we saw a man walk in on 2 different nights in shorts!!! So literally no dress code enforcement.

Shorts - really? The audacity of some people. I am truly mortified by the thought of seeing someone in shorts in a dining room.

Beamafar

Depends on the ship, the asst m'D and the itinerary - I've seen men turned away when wearing shorts.  DH was refused entry to TSL last year on Splendida when wearing shorts - it was only shortly after 6pm!

Beam...I'm sure this is more of a European /med cruise which tend to be more formal. Caribbean cruises you can pretty much dictate what you want to wear. . I have found this on all lines I've cruised stateside

Actually, it was a repositioning cruise where temperatures were hotter than average Caribbean ones.

I did advise that it  "depends on itinerary", in fairness, IC.

I'm not disagreeing.... Sadly it is under control of the cruiseline..but most dining room staff tend to ignore and not enforce questionable attire.

On our recent Caribbean in Preziosa YC we were very surprised at the formality of dinner dressing on both Elegant nights. Many, probably about 25%, men wore Tuxedos and another 25% were in suits. Most of the remainder, like me, wore long sleeve shirts with dress trousers. The ladies, as ever, at least complemented their partners in level of dressing and often exceeded. Not a single guest in the YC restaurant 'dressed down' on any night....by that I mean the minimum was a collared short sleeve shirt, and chinos or equivalent.

OK, it wasn't 'stateside' as such because the cruise commenced and ended in Barbados and remained in the Caribbean throughout. The mix of passengers was largely European, many British (500 passengers) and a smaller number of Americans.

We were just on and the norm was slacks and shirt for men and dress or slacks for women.  Fancy nights people spruced it up a bit.  Saw one tux and the guy was cranked with pictures of people in shorts at dinner.  Imo shorts not appropriate but I'm not going to get cranked about it.  I was just happy Octomom wasn't on letting her kids run around dining room during dinner.

What to Wear at a Yacht Club for Lunch – Your Ultimate Guide!

What to wear at a yacht club for lunch

Heading to a yacht club for lunch can be an exciting experience, offering you the chance to relax and dine in an exquisite setting.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a regular attendee, choosing the proper attire is essential to ensure you fit in and feel comfortable.

This article will explore some of the best apparel choices to keep you looking stylish and appropriate for lunch at a yacht club.

Yacht clubs often uphold a certain level of elegance, but there’s no need to feel intimidated when selecting your outfit.

The key is to find a balance between being well-dressed and enjoying the casual ambiance. So here we go; below, you’ll find everything you need to know on what to wear at a yacht club for lunch.

Table of Contents

Yacht Club Dress Codes

Understanding dress codes.

When attending a lunch at a yacht club, it’s essential to understand the dress code beforehand. Yacht clubs typically have varying dress requirements depending on the event and time of day.

For a lunch event, you’ll most likely encounter a more casual dress code. It’s best to familiarize yourself with the club’s specific guidelines and adhere to them.

Common Yacht Club Dress Codes

At most yacht clubs, there are a few general rules to follow when dressing for lunch:

  • Shirts:  Opt for collared shirts like a classic polo or button-down. Avoid wearing tank tops or T-shirts.
  • Bottoms:  Choose comfortable and well-tailored pants, such as chinos or slacks. Shorts may be acceptable, but ensure they are a reasonable length and not too casual or distressed.
  • Footwear:  Wear closed-toe shoes like loafers or boat shoes. Don’t wear flip-flops. Yacht clubs don’t allow it.
  • Tops:  Select a blouse or a nice polished yet comfortable top. Avoid wearing strapless, revealing, or overly casual tops.
  • Bottoms:  Choose tailored pants, skirts, or dresses that are appropriate in length and style. Shorts are generally discouraged, although some yacht clubs may permit them if they are dressy and tailored.
  • Footwear:  Opt for comfortable and stylish footwear like flats, wedges, or sandals. The same as men, don’t wear flip-flops.

Lunch Clothing Options for Men

Formal attire.

When attending a yacht club for lunch and dressing in formal attire, opt for a classic combination of a crisp collared shirt, slacks, or chinos.

Ties are typically not necessary, but if you want to elevate your look, feel free to include one.

Light colors like white or pale blues are perfect for a summery vibe. Finish your outfit with comfortable loafers or boating shoes for a polished appearance.

Casual Attire

If you prefer a more casual approach, your options expand to include versatile pieces like polo shirts, t-shirts, or even tank tops, as long as they’re not too skimpy. Pair your top with boat shorts or loose pants to ensure comfort and a laid-back aesthetic.

Footwear-wise, swap the loafers for a pair of sandals or boat shoes that are easy to slip on and off at the dock.

When dressing for a yacht club lunch, keep it simple and remember that your comfort is key.

Choose lightweight and breathable fabrics, such as cotton and linen, to ensure you remain cool and stylish while enjoying the sea breeze.

Lunch Clothing Options for Women

Dresses and skirts.

When choosing a dress or skirt for lunch at a yacht club, opt for lightweight fabrics like linen or cotton. Go for knee-length or midi dresses in soft, flowy fabrics that provide comfort and style. A linen dress is a classic option. If you’re leaning more toward skirts, choose one that matches the dress code of the yacht club while still making you feel fashionable and comfortable.

Blouses and Pants

Lunch at a yacht club gives you the opportunity to experiment with different styles of blouses. Cotton and linen are the perfect materials for a summer blouse, providing a casual yet sophisticated look.

Pair your blouse with pants that are comfortable for the yacht setting, like tailored linen pants. Avoid overly tight or restrictive clothing. If you prefer jeans, opt for a dark wash to maintain a polished appearance.

Footwear Suggestions

Men’s footwear.

When it comes to men’s footwear at a yacht club for lunch, you’ll want to focus on practicality and style.

It’s important to wear  non-slip and non-marking outsole shoes to avoid slipping or marking the deck in case you get on board a boat.

Boat shoes are a popular and comfortable choice, offering a fashionable look while being yacht-appropriate.

If you prefer sandals, opt for sturdy ones that provide support and grip. Just remember, some boat owners may require you to leave your shoes on the dock before getting on board a yacht.

So you might want to have an alternative footwear option handy. Lastly, look for shoes with  white outsoles , as they don’t mark the deck, keeping the yacht clean and pristine.

Women’s Footwear

For women, the same basic principles apply. Make sure you choose shoes with a  non-slip and non-marking outsole  to avoid any accidents. Boat shoes and sturdy sandals are both fantastic options for combining style and practicality.

If your lunch takes place on a boat, don’t wear high heels , as they can be dangerous and may damage the deck. As mentioned above, you might be asked to leave your shoes on the dock, so having a backup pair is a good idea.

As with men’s footwear, opting for  white outsoles  ensures you won’t leave any marks on the boat, allowing you to focus on enjoying your lunch at the yacht club.

Accessorizing Your Outfit

When choosing jewelry for a yacht club lunch, aim for elegant but understated pieces. Stick to delicate necklaces, bracelets, and earrings, avoiding anything too flashy or clunky. For example, a simple gold or silver pendant can add the right touch of class without being over the top. Remember, you’re attending a lunch event, so keep your choices on the more casual side.

Hats and Sunglasses

Something that most yacht clubs forbid is wearing a hat inside the building.

This rule applies to both men and women. So if you plan to have lunch at the yacht club’s restaurant, you can’t wear a hat unless you sit on the yacht deck or on a balcony.

However, suppose you are allowed to wear one outside; opt for hats with wide brims or classic Panama hats to shield your face from the sun’s rays.

Sunglasses are another essential for a daytime event like a yacht club lunch. Look for pairs that offer full UV protection and complement your outfit. Classic shapes like aviators or wayfarers are versatile and timeless choices.

Just make sure your sunglasses don’t clash with your hat, and you’ll be well on your way to a perfectly accessorized outfit for a yacht club lunch.

Considering the Weather

When planning your outfit for a yacht club lunch, it’s important to consider the weather. In warmer temperatures, opt for light, breathable fabrics like linen or cotton.

A short-sleeved polo shirt or a blouse is an excellent choice for staying cool and comfortable. Women can also wear light sundresses or shorts with a tank top that isn’t too revealing.

In cooler or unpredictable weather, layering is key. Start with a collared shirt or a light blouse, and add a sweater or light jacket if needed.

Don’t forget to bring an umbrella or a water-resistant coat if there’s a chance of rain, and always have a pair of sunglasses on hand for those unexpectedly sunny moments.

When choosing your footwear, remember that you may be walking on wet surfaces or spending time outside. Avoid flip-flops and opt for non-slipping boating shoes , like Sperry, that offer both style and functionality. These shoes come in numerous styles, making it easy to find the perfect match for your outfit.

What to Avoid Wearing

When heading to a yacht club for lunch, there are a few fashion faux pas you should be mindful of. Remember, yacht clubs have a certain level of sophistication, and dressing appropriately is crucial.

First and foremost, avoid wearing any torn, stained, or worn clothing. Clothes with rips, holes, missing buttons, and stubborn stains are not suitable for the yacht club setting. Your outfit should be clean, well-maintained, and presentable.

As tempting as it may be to flaunt your summer style, steer clear of revealing clothing. Avoid items like denim shorts, tank tops, mini skirts, and cut-off shirts. Instead, opt for more modest attire that allows you to stay cool and look chic.

While you may love your comfortable flip-flops or sneakers, it’s not allowed to wear them to a yacht club lunch. These casual footwear options can come across as too casual and out of place. Instead, choose shoes that are stylish and comfortable but more refined.

Additionally, leave your baseball caps and other hats at home. Most yacht clubs prefer that men remove their caps when inside the venue, so it’s best to stick to this etiquette and keep the caps for actual sailing excursions.

Lastly, avoid dressing too casually with clothing like wrinkled or sloppy attire. Yacht club lunches often have a semi-formal or smart casual dress code, so make sure your outfit is polished and well-balanced between casual and formal elements.

Questions People Forten Ask

Q: What is the typical dress code for a yacht club lunch?

Yacht clubs often have a more relaxed dress code during lunchtime. Stylish casual wear, including clean, neat jeans and shorts, is usually acceptable. However, it’s always a good idea to check with the specific yacht club for their dress code guidelines.

Q: How formal should my attire be for a yacht club lunch?

Although the attire for a yacht club lunch is less formal than dinner, you should still aim to look polished and presentable. Opt for refined and comfortable clothing, such as dressy shorts, skirts, or pants paired with an elegant top. You may also want to consider wearing a light blazer to elevate your look.

Q: Are there any specific clothing items to avoid at a yacht club?

When attending a yacht club event, it is best to avoid overly casual clothing items, such as flip-flops, athletic wear, or torn clothing. It’s also recommended to leave the denim at home when attending a yacht club dinner, as mentioned in The Sailor ‘s Style Guide: How to Dress at a Yacht Club. Different areas of the club may have specific dress rules, so it’s always good to inquire ahead of time.

Q: How does a daytime yacht club event differ in dress code?

Daytime events at yacht clubs tend to have a more relaxed dress code compared to evening events. For day events, it is appropriate to wear casual yet polished clothing like shorts, skirts, and light dresses. However, as the sun sets and nighttime events begin, expect the dress code to become more formal, often requiring sports coats or cocktail attire.

Q: Do yacht clubs have a specific dress code to follow when dining?

Yacht clubs usually have a more formal dress code for dining, especially during dinner. In most cases, sports coats are expected, and denim should be avoided. For ladies, sophisticated dresses or skirts with elegant tops are appropriate. Check with the yacht club you are attending to ensure you follow their specific rules and guidelines for dining attire.

Final Words!

Now that you have an idea of the appropriate attire, you’re set to enjoy a delightful lunch at the yacht club. Dress to impress, adhere to the dress code, and don’t forget to indulge in the delicious food and beautiful views the club has to offer.

Loved your article.  It’s very well put together and will be really helpful to someone who will be attending a lunch as a guest at a yacht club.   Even though many clubs have relaxed their dress code, it’s so much nicer to dress well for lunch at such a nice venue.  Your article will make sure that a new visitor to the yacht club doesn’t make an error and inadvertently break the dress code.

Thank you for your kind words! I’m glad to hear that you found my article helpful and informative. I completely agree that dressing well for lunch at a yacht club is a great way to show respect for the venue and the occasion. While some clubs have relaxed their dress codes, it’s always better to err on the side of caution and dress appropriately. I’m happy to hear that my article will help new visitors avoid any potential dress code mishaps. Thank you again for your feedback, and I wish you all the best in your future yacht club visits!

What a beautiful website! This “how-to” type post was very informative about how to dress if you are having lunch at a yacht club. There are many practical suggestions that will make a first time visitor feel comfortable. This article provides all one needs to know about proper dress etiquette for yacht clubs in general.  Yacht clubs promote boating and cruising, and provide social meeting place for the boating community. Do you have to own a boat or sea vessel to join a yacht club? Do yacht clubs screen potential members financial standing or backgrounds before they are accepted? Do potential members have to be sponsored by a member of the yacht club to join? All I need now is to be invited to lunch at our local yacht club. I know just what to wear. Thanks.

Thank you for your comment! I am glad to hear that you found my website beautiful and informative, particularly the “how-to” post on dressing for lunch at a yacht club. I strive to provide practical suggestions that will make first-time visitors feel comfortable and confident in any setting. As for your questions about yacht clubs, boat owners are not always required to join, and some clubs do screen potential members based on financial standing or background. Additionally, some clubs may require sponsorship from a current member in order to join. I hope that this information is helpful, and I wish you the best of luck in being invited to lunch at your local yacht club!
