If the expense of booking the world’s largest charter yacht for a week is difficult to wrap your head around, then you’ll really have to do mind yoga to understand the ludicrous cost of actually owning a yacht .

Next up, enter the concept (because it really is just a concept for us mere mortals) of getting a prime yacht parking spot at the Monaco Grand Prix and the staggering figures that go with it.

DMARGE did some digging and spoke to Istanbul-based luxury yacht manager Candaş Balci to divulge approximately how much it costs to moor a superyacht in Monaco during one of its peak annual events.

There are different parking spots (berths) in the main marina that come with different rates depending on how much of the F1 track the yacht can see.

According to Balci, for a 35-metre yacht in a place that has no view of the track and only of the inside of the port, it will cost around €30 000 (R480 000) for the week.

The berths that look directly onto the track can go for around €50 000 through to €100 000 (R1,6 million) for the week, “which is almost their yearly berth fee in a normal marina”.

More digging (through  Reddit’s F1 Technical page) uncovered this price list from 2019, which seems more or less consistent with the pricing Balci gave:

Forbes also reported on this some time ago, with similar ballpark figures:

“To moor in one of the world’s most expensive marinas during high season, a superyacht owner can be expected to pay up to $4,130 per night, and during prime time events such as the Monaco Grand Prix rates can skyrocket to $100,000 or more for a five-day stay in Monaco’s prime berths.”

According to  212 Yachts , getting a berth during the Monaco Grand Prix is highly competitive, and something one needs to do well in advance as the port gets filled to capacity pretty quickly.

That means hastily completing a port application form:

In order to do this, you must first select your charter yacht as technical details of the vessel must be specified on the form. Those directly associated with the Formula One, the Monaco Grand Prix and the event sponsors are fast tracked in the process, contributing to the extremely competitive nature of this process.

At what stage the yachtie exits their own competition to watch the race, I will never know.

What It Costs To Moor A Superyacht At The Monaco Grand Prix

Forget the F1 – booking a berth is the real race...

What It Costs To Moor A Superyacht At The Monaco Grand Prix

Image: Gareth Harford

Monaco. The billionaire’s playground. The kleptomaniac’s kryptonite. The ludomaniac’s lair. Superyacht city. Monaco is known as a fabulous place to spend money like wild (and to strut on a treadmill on the deck of your superyacht , whilst watching the F1).

Speaking of which, you might be interested to know how much it costs to moor a superyacht in Monaco during the Monaco Grand Prix. To answer this burning question, DMARGE spoke to Istanbul-based luxury yacht manager Candaş Balci.

Balci told us just to book a fairly average berth in Monaco “for F1 week” was around 30 thousand euros “for a 35-meter motoryacht for a place which had no view of track but inside the port.”

Balci explained: “There are different parts in the marina which have different rates depending on where the yacht will be.”

“If it sees the track or not, price changes as well,” Bali told us.

“The berths which directly see the track were around 50-100K euro for the week, which is almost their yearly berth fee in a normal marina.” Candas Balci

Browsing through Reddit’s F1 Technical page, one user posts a link to a photo which purports to give a list of Monaco’s pricing for 2019. The prices which appear in the photo seem more or less consistent with the pricing Balci gave DMARGE.

yacht parking monaco f1

Another Reddit user said: “My old landlord used to work on super yachts and also happened to introduce me to f1 so I can at least give you an anecdotal response. He said to rent the slip during the race week was around 100k and there was usually a 20k ‘offering to the port master’ as a separate transaction. He called it a bribe but I’m not sure it’s fair for me to use his characterization.”

RELATED: Hotel Staff Reveal The Wildest Rich Person Requests They’ve Ever Received

Forbes also wrote about this topic a number of years back. They reported: “To moor in one of the world’s most expensive marinas during high season, a superyacht owner can be expected to pay up to $4,130 per night, and during prime time events such as the Monaco Grand Prix rates can skyrocket to $100,000 or more for a five-day stay in Monaco’s prime berths.”

Monaco’s Port Hercules has 700 berths. Ac cording to 212 Yachts , “During the Monaco Grand Prix, the port is filled to capacity, with berths booked well in advance of the event.”

212 Yachts also says that to get yourelf a berth you need to complete a port application form. This is a highly competetive process.

“For the best chance of a successful application, it is essential to submit this form as early as possible,” 212 Yachts states.

“In order to do this, you must first select your charter yacht as technical details of the vessel must be specified on the form. Those directly associated with the Formula One, the Monaco Grand Prix and the event sponsors are fast tracked in the process, contributing to the extremely competitive nature of this process,” ( 212 Yachts ).

There you have it: you can add knowing how much it costs to moor a superyacht in Monaco to your list of superyacht knowledge (which should also include knowing what it costs to spend a week on a superyacht in the medditeranean and why travelling around Europe on a superyacht is more stressful than you think ).

The Monaco Grand Prix holds an esteemed status as the pinnacle and most revered race within the illustrious “Triple Crown” of motorsports.

"Winning the Monaco Grand Prix is the highlight of any racing driver's career"

- Nico Rosbert

As Nico Rosberg once said, “Winning the Monaco Grand Prix is the highlight of any racing driver’s career”!

  • It is one of the most challenging tracks to drive because of its narrow streets, With its close barriers and unforgiving walls, the Monaco Grand Prix offers no room for mistakes. Even the slightest error in judgment or loss of concentration can result in a race-ending collision or damage to the car.
  •  Known as a street circuit, the tight, narrow layout winds through the streets of Monte Carlo, leaving no margin for error. The lack of runoff areas and minimal overtaking opportunities means drivers must take calculated risks, making split-second decisions as they navigate the tight corners, sharp hairpins, and elevation changes.

Must watch this video from Nico Rosberg (who is also a Monaco resident) and won this race three times, how he explains the challenges of the Monaco track!

  • Variable Weather Conditions: The unpredictable weather in Monaco can make the race even more challenging. A sudden downpour can turn the already demanding circuit into a treacherous obstacle course, testing the drivers’ ability to adapt to changing conditions on the fly. Rain can make the track slippery, reducing grip and increasing the likelihood of incidents. I must admit we are all secretly hoping for rain because that’s when the race gets more challenging and we get to see the most exciting drive moves! Although in the end.. all we want really are champagne showers!
  • The race consists of 78 laps and the average speed is 96 MPH!
  • Michael Shumacher still holds the record for the fastest lap time in Monaco in 2004 who finishes in 1:14:439 (seconds and miliseconds matter in this sport!)

yacht parking monaco f1

There are many ways of watching the race, you can watch it on the stands, in a hotel balcony, on a building terrace and of course the favorite one is to watch it onboard a superyacht!

Monaco residents or companies that have terraces with track views usually rent their terraces or organize hospitality themselves where they provide catering of food drinks and entertainment.

Hotels that have a track-side view also organize packages, although the view in most cases is not superb. You can also rent a room with a track view for example the best ones are at the Fairmont Hotel and also the Hotel de Paris. The advantage of the Fairmont is that you get free access to Nikki Beach, so if you plan to do pool parties this is your best bet!

I watched it once from Hermitage and even though the lunch was fun the view was quite limited.

The most common way is to watch it from the stands, although there are many and in different locations and if you are not familiar with Monaco, you can learn all about the grand stands and location here.

The paddock club is the most social option, located in the port and near the pits its an open area with many places to lounge, gourmet cuisine eat, open bars relax, meet the drivers and other VIP celebrities. Tickets for this type of hospitality is around 7,000 USD but you can get authographs from the drivers after the race is done!

Insider tip:

To book a table at a restaurant that has track view and that way you only spend on lunch (around 100-300 euros) instead of paying for extra tickets. Here is a list with all the restaurants in pole position. Restaurants like Quai des artistes have great packages of food entertainment and great track views.!

If you can’t attend the race, no worries you can also live stream it from the comfort of your home.

yacht parking monaco f1

The epitome of luxury and the ultimate viewing experience for the Monaco Grand Prix is undoubtedly from the deck of a yacht. However, renting a superyacht for the entire week comes with a hefty price tag of approximately 500,000 euros, not to mention the additional challenge of securing a berth at an extra cost. Actually securing the berth is one of the hardest things! We have been doing it for years, and yet every year is a gamble!

yacht parking monaco f1

But fear not! You can still indulge in the opulence and live the dream of watching the Monaco GP from a yacht without breaking the bank. Our exclusive hospitality packages start from just 600 euros per day, offering a fraction of the cost while delivering an extraordinary and super-luxurious experience. Moreover, the most glamorous parties and after-parties take place right in the port, onboard these magnificent vessels, creating a truly magical atmosphere.

To ensure seamless access to the yachts, it’s important to note that all access from the port is blocked. The best way to board is by tender, either from La Rascasse or, ideally, from the Port of Fontvieille. However, keep in mind that there may be some “tender traffic,” so it’s wise to plan ahead for a smooth transfer.

A friendly tip: Brace yourself for a bit of turbulence during tender transfers from yachts at anchor or when coming across from Port Fontvieille. Expect a touch of sea spray and perhaps some unruly hairstyles, but the exhilaration of the experience more than makes up for it.

Last minute Yacht Deals:

Budget tip: The Monaco Grand Prix’s Sector Rocher is one of the cheapest general admission areas in the world, with tickets going for €120 on race day and just over €300 for the whole weekend.

How to get free tickets:

Companies like Netjets invite their clients and rent huge roof top terraces and have incredible entertainment packages.

If you own a yacht (or planning to buy one) reach out to your favorite broker, most brokerage houses in Monaco have nice views!

If you are a member of the Yacht club (or have a friend who is) ask him to invite you to watch the race from there where you have the best harbor views! This year they are also hosting a free party on Saturday!

There are a lot of companies hosting and entertaining clients so if you are a good customer make sure to reach out, remember if you don’t ask you don’t get!

Pro tip: There are FREE autographs sessions by the drivers in the Live fan zone in place d’armes and best part is that no ticket is required!

Hotels in Monaco get booked really quickly and usually those dates are overpriced, We have a great option where you can stay onboard a yacht for a cheaper price than any hotels so contact us for more info!

Budget tip: the best is to stay in the surrounding towns like Menton, Cap D’ ail, or Nice.

 Getting there

The best way from Nice to Monaco and to ensure you arrive on style is for sure by helicopter, which takes only 7mins from nice and costs less than 200 euros.

Parking- If you are hoping on a tender to your superyacht, the best way is to park in Fontvieille, come in early there are big parking like in Carrefour supermarket. Another big parking in Fontvieille is the Stadium parking. Parking can be a nightmare in Monaco during the GP so plan an alternative (and pack flat shoes and be prepared to walk)

Taxis – somehow there are not enough taxis in Monaco during events like this so trying to get one is a nightmare, and sometimes they can even scammed you and treat you like a dumb tourist so be careful!

Train- coming by train has its charms as well. Train tickets are less than €10 for a return trip from Nice or Ventimiglia if booked in advance, although prices do rise for on-the-day bookings. The trip takes 20 minutes from Nice or 36 minutes from Ventimiglia, and each journey showcases one of the most stunning stretches of coastline the region has to offer.

yacht parking monaco f1

What to bring, wear, and not-pack..

The weather is like in May.. it May be sunny but it May also rain.. so be prepared for both!

If you are seating on the stands, they are not covered so be prepared!

  •     Cash – most places take card, but you never know!
  •     Headphones
  •     Flat shoes
  •     Sunglasses
  •     Sunscreen
  •     Extra battery pack
  •     Rain jacket and/or umbrella

Do not bring strollers, scooters, scooter helmets, heavy backpacks, etc cause due to high security this won’t be allowed.

Shoes   First of all you don’t need shoes onboard a yacht so don’t overthink your outfit shoes! Bring a second pair of flat shoes just in case, because once the race is finished the streets are still closed and you may need to walk a lot! Over 21 km of safety railing and 20,000 sqm of catch fencing is set up, so be ready to walk a lot!

Parties and after-parties

If I’m honest, we are not all here following closely the race 🙂 mostly is about the vibe, the excitement in the air, the entertainment, and THE PARTIES!

Steps for the ideal Monaco experience:

Step 1: Watch the race

Step 2: Go for a nice dinner (Buddha bar, La Mome, Le Grill..)

Step 3: Party onboard a yacht

Step 4: Join the Dj Party

Step 5: Go to Sass Cafe

Step 6: Follow the after party

Monaco’s nightlife during the Grand Prix comes alive with vibrant energy, offering unforgettable experiences at renowned nightclubs like Amber Lounge, Sunset, Jimmy’z, and Twiga.

Arguably the most fun party in Monaco! Best way to arrive is by tender of course (but make sure you bring cash!) it’s a BEACH party so no heels! Arrive early cause sunset as the name implies is the most fun! It’s a great place to meet people (and no so loud like other clubs) but the music is more chill loungy and not a real dance club.

The most famous nightclub in Monaco is Jimmy’z , its literally a legend! Super glam and its iconic dance floor could tell many stories! Here is where the best DJs play and has the best high energy atmosphere. Also its super hard to get in so either come in super early or book long in advance.

 Amber Lounge

Some call it the ultimate party destination during the Monaco Grand Prix, Amber Lounge the party where celebrities and F1 drivers go. With its glamorous ambiance, live performances by international artists, and a buzzing atmosphere, it offers an exclusive VIP experience where you get a chance to rub shoulders with the who’s who of the racing world! Tables start around 30K and its usually sold out so make sure you book in advance.

Flabios Briatore’s restaurant (near Cipriani) has the best of Italian cuisine, exotic cocktails, and an electrifying club scene where you can both eath there and then party! The ambiance and décor are very unique so is a must-visit if you want a sophisticated nightlife experience.

OK Ciao Bye

A Monaco Grand Prix Weekend for two for €300

Despite the glitz and glamour of the VIPs and yachts and helicopters, it is possible to see the Monaco Grand Prix on a tight budget. Grandstands are set up at different spots around the circuit, each offering different views, and different experiences. And with a little sense of adventure, you can do a Monaco Grand Prix weekend for two people for €300.

Monaco E-Prix

Individual tickets to the race can be purchased online, and prices are broken down by location and day. Thursday is a day of practice sessions, and prices are the lowest, starting at €30. It’s not nearly as exciting as the race, but it’s a cheap and easy way to get great seats in prime locations and you still get to feel the roar of the cars as they speed by.

Saturday is qualifying, where each driver goes for the best time, hoping for the coveted “poll” position, which often leads to a win. Race day ticket prices go up considerably, with grandstand seats ranging from €420 to €780. The cheapest section to the view qualifying and the race is up on the grassy hill in La Rocher. General admission tickets cost €70 on Saturday and €100 on Sunday. But make sure to get there early, as people will often camp out in the area to get a good spot.

Accommodation

Staying the night anywhere in Monaco or the surrounding towns can be out of most people’s budgets. But neighbouring Nice is only about 30 minutes from Monaco by train and has several budget hotels and some hostels. Rooms can be found in Nice under €100 per night, and many will offer Grand Prix packages.

Aire Camping France

But perhaps the least expensive way to see the Monaco Grand Prix is by camping out . Various places along the roads leading to Monaco are filled with people pitching a tent and camping out for a good view. There is also a proper camp ground 30 minutes from the Principality, called La Laune . The are at a distance in the hills, but are located near a regional rail station and a bus stop to Nice and Monaco. Prices start at €19,50 per day for two people and parking.

Further out towards Antibes, there is Les Embruns campsite that provides options for camping with a tent or a caravan starting at €30 / day for two people. This is a convenient location because you are only 100 metres from the sea and walking distance to the Biot rail station for Monaco. Both sites offer several amenities including Wi-fi, table rental, refrigerators, and camper hook-ups.

Statue of David Coulthard’s F1 car

The Principality is abuzz with activity during the Grand Prix. Big screens located around the city so you don’t miss a moment and the roar of the sheer power of the cars can be heard from anywhere. Whether wining and dining on a private terrace, partying it up on a super-yacht, or camping out on the mountain, the Monaco Grand Prix offers something for every budget.

The yacht-spotter's guide to the F1 Monaco Grand Prix

Every year, Monaco’s Grand Prix pulls in some of the fleet’s finest superyachts for a weekend of adrenaline-fuelled F1 action and A-lister events in the heart of the principality. Yachts moored stern to the circuit have a premium vantage point over the cars tearing around the track, while superyachts at anchor can enjoy all the Formula One buzz with the added benefit of privacy and seclusion.

BOAT takes a closer look at the superyachts spotted near the event...

Renaissance

Length : 111.9m Builder : Freire

Renaissance is the largest private yacht built in Spain and one of the world's most expensive charter yachts . Which is quite the feat for Freire, a commercial shipyard that has built only one private yacht in the past. With 7,200GT to play with, her list of amenities include a sushi bar, a dedicated hair and beauty salon, a ballet bar with a mirror for stretching and two cinemas – one indoor, one outdoor. The owner's deck is described as "palatial" and comes with its own a media room, a lounge with bar and dining and a private terrace with a Jacuzzi for six.

Length : 52.1m Builder : Sanlorenzo

Spotted pulling into port with a Bugatti on the aft, Seven Sins is the perfect yacht for soaking up the Formula One action. She is part of Sanlorenzo's hugely successful 52Steel series, with features including a glass-bottomed pool on the aft that floods the beach club below with light. Her palatial interior design offers plenty of space for kicking back and watching the races in a more relaxed setting and her sharp Officina Italiana Design exterior is sure to attract attention in Monaco harbour.

Length : 90m Builder : Benetti

Lionheart was launched in 2016 as the shipyard's largest build to date, though she was surpassed by the 107-metre Mar (ex Lana ) four years later. She was the third yacht to be ordered from Benetti by the same owner, Sir Philip Green. While her curvy exterior and private balconies will be visible to those visiting Port Hercule this weekend, interiors have always been shrouded in secrecy. It is known that  Stefano Natucci  collaborated with Benetti on the exterior design and Green & Mingarelli Design  is responsible for the interior design.

Fountainhead

Length : 87.8m   Builder : Feadship

Created with family use in mind, Fountainhead features a recreation room and library that can be converted into cabins to supplement the six existing guest cabins and owner's suite. She was designed by De Voogt Naval Architects and Sinot Yacht Design , though "a signature blend of art, antiques and aesthetics" by Belgian artist Axel Vervoordt are also displayed throughout.  Leisure highlights include a fully-equipped gym with health club, a contra-flow swimming pool and a tender garage that houses wave runners, kayaks, surfboard and diving equipment, among others. The superyacht is named after the famous novel by Ayn Rand.

Coral Ocean

Length : 72.6m Builder : Lürssen

A World Superyacht Award winner, Coral Ocean earned the judges' commendation following a sensitive, multi-million refit that converted the heritage vessel into a successful charter platform. All deck spaces were upgraded, including a reimagined sundeck that now houses a glass-sided spa pool, sunbathing and observation deck and a central deckhouse with a television lounge, dining area and bar. Coral Ocean was one of the largest launches of 1994 and her secrecy for the first two decades of her life solidified her as an icon for the German shipyard. She is owned by Australian garbage waste disposal giant Ian Malouf.

Length : 72m   Builder : Lürssen

Delivered in 2006, Titania  (ex Apoise ) was put up for auction by her owner in 2010 and was snapped up for €33.75 million – roughly half the estimated value – by Phones4U tycoon John Caudwell. He then went on to refit, lengthen and rename the superyacht, which he discusses in an exclusive interview with BOAT International . Designed by Espen Øino and Francois Zuretti , the Lürssen was the star yacht in season six of The Crown and is a popular charter yacht. No wonder, as she sports a beach club that can be converted into a nightclub, an onboard masseuse and beautician and an impressive array of watersports – including a waterpark and a 12.7-metre slide.

Length : 70m Builder : Royal Denship

Force Blue first hit the water in 2002 as the 63.3-metre Big Roi , a trawler-style expedition yacht that has since been refitted to varying degrees. The most recent work was done at Lusben in 2022 and involved a seven-metre stern extension to allow for a large, wrap-around swim platform. The main deck was extended in the process as well. Design highlights include a black-tiled spa (with heated massage table), a cinema, a barbecue and dining area that turns into a disco and a dining room that doubles as a conference space. An elevator serves all decks.

Length : 67.5m Builder : Icon Yachts

The flagship of the Dutch shipyard, Loon (ex Icon ) is now anchored in Port Hercule where she is likely to cause another social media sensation . She was delivered in 2010 to a design by RWD , with clean, contemporary interiors by Studio Linse . A raised main deck pool is one of her many highlights with two panels of glass that filter natural light into the beach club below. A bar, gym, massage room and sauna are also found at this level. Loon was sold to a new owner in April 2023, after which she joined the charter fleet with IYC .

Length : 66m   Builder : Oceanco

AHS has undergone numerous name changes (she was sold and renamed mostly recently in January ) but started life as Dilbar in 2005. A successful charter yacht, she can be easily distinguished in port by her classic canoe stern. An interior by the late Alberto Pinto provides accommodation across eight cabins, including a full-beam owner's suite with its own lounge and adjoining private office. Other highlights include an outdoor cinema, a beamy sundeck with 19,000-litre pool and a helipad that transforms into a sun lounge.

Length : 49.9m Builder : Zepter

The Croatian yard's first superyacht offering, JoyMe is usually berthed in Cap d’Ail but has been sighted in Monaco for the past two Grands Prix. She’s one of the most recognisable yachts at the event, with her custom red and white exterior and unusual eye motif – said to be the eyes of the commissioning owner’s daughter. Leisure highlights include a Pop Art-inspired interior by  Marijana Radovic , a sundeck with a 3.5-metre Jacuzzi and a lower deck arranged with a gym, Finnish sauna and Hammam spa with sea views. Accommodation is across five cabins, including the "VIP deck" owner's cabin which has a walk-in bathroom, lounge and private sunbathing platform on the bow.

Length : 45.2m Builder : Royal Hakvoort

The most recent delivery on the list, Milele is one of this year's World Superyacht Award winners . According to the judges, she stood out thanks to her "incredible build quality” and surprising spaces on board. Most notable of these is the innovative foredeck garage, which stores a submarine and crane, and has a full entertainment suite with a large television screen built into its hatch. She was designed inside and out by Omega Architects with an efficient hull design by Van Oossanen Naval Architects .

“River cruising is the beneficiary of a larger travel trend in which luxury travelers are looking to do nothing,” Daniel Levine, director of New York consultancy Avant-Guide Institute , tells Robb Report . “By that, I mean they can visit multiple ports and soak up plenty of culture and history, all without changing hotels.”

This new fleet of river cruisers can access inland cities and remote stretches of countryside that are inaccessible to large oceangoing vessels. Plus, Levine says, there’s an added advantage to river travel: no seasickness.

One leader of the new set of purpose-built riverboats is Aqua Expeditions , the luxury river cruise operator whose first vessel, Aria Amazon , set sail on the Peruvian Amazon in 2011. Over a decade later, the fleet has grown to three river ships, none with more than 20 suites, cruising both the Amazon and the Mekong River in Vietnam and Cambodia, along with two oceangoing yachts in the Galapagos and Eastern Indonesia.

Aria Amazon on the Peruvian Amazon.

“On my river ships, 30 percent of departures are now private buyouts, similar to traditional charters,” says founder Francesco Galli Zugaro. These clients, mainly multigenerational family groups or large gatherings of friends, are people who tend to vacation on yachts rather than the typical cruise ship crowd. Most of them have come to the riverboats, says Galli Zugaro, after chartering one of Aqua Expeditions’ two yachts.

On board the Aria Amazon.

The desire for off-the-beaten-track travel is fueling this new interest in riverboat charters, says Frédéric Crétin, a Monaco-based charter broker at superyacht brokerage Camper & Nicholsons . “We’ve had a surge in enquiries for the Peruvian Amazon, especially with Americans since it’s not too far from home,” says Crétin, who manages whole-boat bookings for the Aqua Expeditions fleet.

Heritage Line operates five traditionally-styled ships along the upper and lower Mekong River and in Vietnam’s Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay. “Our vessels, particularly our small ship sailing charters on Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay, have seen an increase in private stays,” says CEO John Tue Nguyen. “We now average 12 to 15 charters annually, including families, multi-generational bookings and VIP travelers.”

In Egypt, a gap in the market to showcase the country’s temples in a private, exclusive way, was behind the launch of the Nile River’s first luxury charter yacht in 2022, Berge . “Our clients are mostly royal families, politicians, celebrities, and athletes,” says Armen Kazazian of Kazazian Cruises , the yacht’s owner. “They don’t want to share the Egypt experience with hundreds of other people.”

The 180-foot, nine-cabin vessel has recently been joined by a sistership, the 196-foot, nine-cabin Arax . True to superyacht protocol, charters are secured with an official MYBA (The Worldwide Yachting Association) contract, and in the lead-up to the charter, a preference form is sent out to gather information on dietary preferences and daily routines to ensure everything is ready for your arrival.

Luxor by boat.

The differences also include having no water toys as one would on a conventional yacht charter. “But we overcome that with the destination and experiences, such as candlelit dinners on private islands,” says Kazazian.

443-foot Transcend Riverboat

Inland cruising has multiple benefits, says Matthew Shollar of Transcend Cruises , Europe’s first charter-only, river-cruise company. “You’re not just in coastal locations and you can take your whole group off the boat to a spa, or go biking, or shopping,” Shollar says. “And a riverboat always docks close to your destination.”

In September 2025, the company’s first ship, the 443-foot Transcend , will launch, with a second identical vessel following in early 2026. Penned by Tillberg Design of Sweden, both are built to European riverboat specs but draw inspiration from superyachts for style and amenities, including a 2,600-square-foot indoor/outdoor fitness, spa, and guest wellness facility.

Ascend Cruises Meeting Room

“The single most expensive piece of equipment on board is a hot tip from superyachts, a 144-inch C Seed unfolding television,” continues Shollar. “It’s a worthwhile investment for guests to enjoy everything from silent discos to movie nights on the sun deck.”

While the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) trade is set to be Transcend Cruises’ main market, the founders know that there’s a demand for private buyouts—especially given their vessels’ capacity to accommodate up to 120 people, or 10 times the 12-guest standard on most charter yachts. The vessels’ 60, 210-square-foot cabins can be converted into 30 larger 420-square-foot suites.

Belmond’s Coquelicot river boat.

Transcend will sail “the highest-demand European waterways,” including the Rhine, Danube, and Moselle, offering waterside access to historic cities like Trier, Budapest, and Belgrade.

River Barge Kir Royale in France's Champagne region.

But a second collection of smaller luxury barges is carrying charter to canals and smaller waterways. Both Belmond’s 128-foot Coquelicot and European Waterways’ Kir Royale launched in France’s Champagne region this year, with a max capacity of six and eight guests, respectively, and the possibility of whole-boat bookings. This combination of space, intimacy, pastoral views and access to exceptional vineyards can’t be replicated on oceangoing yachts.

While luxury riverboats are still a small niche compared to the larger world of superyacht charters, they offer another kind of cruising experience, one that combines slow-moving water with a relaxed lifestyle in some of the most sought-after destinations on the planet.

Watching the Monaco Grand Prix from the comfort of a superyacht is the ultimate way to experience the on-track action, electric atmosphere and untold glamour of one of the most iconic sporting fixtures on the planet.

Monaco ’s Port Hercules is home to some of the most coveted berths in the world and competition during race week revs up another gear as the rich and the famous clamour to get a prime viewing spot.

But rest assured, no matter whether you wish to watch the race from a superyacht or use a private yacht as a base while disembarking to enjoy the on-land happenings, there will be a top spot in Monaco to suit you. Here’s how you can select and secure the most suitable berth.

Track view berths

Yachts lined up at the Monaco Grand Prix

There is no finer way to see the grand prix than while situated on board a luxurious superyacht sipping champagne and sampling gourmet delights. And fortunately, as the Circuit de Monaco wraps around the port, there are berths in Port Hercules offering enviable views of the track.

These track-view berths are located along Quai des Etats-Unis and around the bend onto Route de la Piscine. This area of the marina is known as Zone 1 and demand for a place here during race week is always significantly higher than the number of berths available.

Applications to secure a Zone 1 spot must be made through the port’s official website at least eight months ahead of the fixture and priority is given to those with the most relevance to the grand prix, such as the racing teams, drivers and sponsors.

With this in mind, it is easy to appreciate why being allocated a zone 1 berth is not always possible. But there are some other options. In particular, buying a yacht hospitality package offered on one of the superyachts that has the connections to secure one of these popular berths. These can start from as little as €600, making it a cheaper option than renting the entire superyacht.

Non-track view berths

Yachts lined up at the Monaco Grand Prix

If you are intent on chartering your own private superyacht over the race weekend, there is more chance of securing a berth in Zone 2 of Port Hercules.

Although it is not possible to see the track from these slips, the yachts are still well placed for those on board to soak up the buzzing atmosphere. Plus, as large screens broadcasting a live feed of the race are strategically placed around the marina, guests will not miss out on the F1 action.

Attendees in these berths will also be well-positioned to join in with the post-race social scene. Once the racing is over, guests will be able to take the tender ashore and sample Monaco’s upscale culinary offerings, swanky bars and glitzy after parties.

Away from Port Hercules

Port Hercules in Monaco

Another option for yacht-goers is to berth in Fontvieille Harbour, which is located to the south of Port Hercules. The track does not pass through this area of Monaco, but the marina is quieter and remains open at all times – unlike Port Hercules which can't be accessed from the street during race and practice sessions.

This is a good choice for F1 fans who want to watch the race from the grandstands while having a quieter base to retreat to. Applications must be made at least three months ahead of the event.

There is also the opportunity to charter a private yacht and anchor off the coast of Monaco. Some of the world’s finest superyachts can be seen positioned here over the race weekend, with their occupants catching tenders ashore to immerse themselves in the goings-on of the grand prix.

This option can suit those who value their privacy as well as those who want to rent a larger superyacht, as space is limited in Port Hercules. It also cuts out the process of having to apply for a berth.

Things to know

Yachts lined up in Port Hercules at the Monaco Grand Prix

Due to the circuit taking place on the city streets, much of Monaco is closed off during practice and race sessions, meaning access from the land to Port Hercules and vice versa is not possible. Instead, tender transfers from yacht to port and vice versa are the most common mode of transport for superyacht guests.

Therefore, those watching the race from Port Hercules will need to ensure they get on board their superyacht before restrictions fall into place. Similarly, those based on a yacht anchored off the coast will need to arrive on land before access is forbidden.

Plus, superyachts cannot leave Port Hercules between Wednesday and Monday of race week. This means a minimum charter period for those renting their own private yacht in the port is five days.
