ELADA (BILGIN 147)

ELADA (BILGIN 147)

In 2014, another H2-designed yacht 45 meter Elada took the stage with masculine design and the blue color. The tri-deck yacht features a beach club at the transom and an expansive bridge-deck terrace.

The yacht’s most striking element, however, is the contrast between its modern, almost futuristic-looking exterior and its classic interior, which is filled with ribbed and scalloped woodwork.

Elada is an Eye-Catching 45-Meter Superyacht by Bilgin Yachts

By Brody Patterson

Updated on August 31, 2017

elada yacht owner name

Elada is a 45-meter semi-displacement yacht built by Turkish shipyard Bilgin Yachts, with interior and exterior design by H2 Yacht Design. Ordered back in 2012 and launched earlier this year, her distinguishing feature is the unusual reserve bow.

The eye-catching vessel is not only remarkable due to her exterior lines, but also thanks to her light blue elements, which give her a very cool and elegant look. Other prominent features include the folding transom door with access to a large beach club and the ample amount of space offered, making the exterior a perfect spot for sunbathing and relaxation.

Elada ’s interiors are just as welcoming: a blend of classic and modern, with more of an emphasis of the traditional. Luxurious details and high-end materials (pelisandro, beli, madrano burl, imbuya pomela, ebony macassar, wenge, backlit honey onyx, and backlit wild agate) create a warm and comfortable space guests will feel right at home in. Speaking of guests, six well-appointed cabins serve as accommodations for up to 12 people.

Delivered, as we’ve mentioned above, earlier this year, Elada is currently used privately, with no current plans to make here available for charter. She is currently cruising around Europe and the Mediterranean.

Bilgin’s New Yacht Elada Has Vastly Different Interior and Exterior Styling, and Both Are Stunning

Bilgin’s Elada , a 147-foot triple-deck motor yacht with a reverse bow and blue accents, is another one-of-a-kind design from the Turkish custom shipyard. The London-based H2 Yacht Design created both the exterior and interior, giving them radically different styling. The sleek, futuristic exterior would make a great backdrop for a sci-fi movie, while the rich wood and marble of the interior contribute to a more classic—indeed, a fairly conservative—design.

The reverse bow is shaped like an eagle’s beak, turned down at the point. Moving aft, the hull has very clean lines. Raised bulwarks along the side decks and a long superstructure give the profile an integrated, lean look, especially considering that the boat has three decks.

H2 designed Elada to be more than just a pretty face, however. A folding door at the transom turns the swim platform into a beach club, while expansive glass doors between the bridge deck and the sky lounge—which has an outdoor dining table for 12—transform the area into an open terrace. Matching hot tubs—one on the bridge deck and the other on the sundeck—are perfect hubs for socializing with guests or for more intimate interactions. To give the yacht a signature touch, the owner requested large swaths of blue painted across the stern and foredeck and on the bridge.

The boat’s interior is dark and rich, with high-gloss veneers and woods—including wenge , burl walnut, zebrano, and palisander—as well as warm leathers and fabrics and cool marble floors. The full-beam owner’s suite on the bridge deck includes a large bedroom, a palatial bathroom with onyx detailing, and an office with its own skylight. A VIP cabin is located on the main deck, while the lower deck houses four double guest suites equipped with en suite bathrooms. The hand-finished wood detailing, often ribbed and scalloped, makes the interior an exceptional piece of artisanship.

Besides its striking looks, Elada is also a performer, able to reach a top speed of 19 knots; its cruising speed is 15 knots. When traveling at the eco-cruise speed of 12 knots, it has a range of 2,600 miles. ( bilginyacht.com )

The Most Expensive Superyacht in the World

When it comes to superyachts, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar, certainly knows how to make a statement.

His luxury vessel, the 463-foot Al Mirqab, holds the title of the world’s most expensive superyacht.

Built in 2008 by German shipbuilder Peters Werft, this impressive yacht is complete with 10 luxurious cabins, a conference room, cinema, and all the amenities one would expect from a vessel of this magnitude.

In addition, the Al Mirqab features a helipad, swimming pool, and even an outdoor Jacuzzi.

With a price tag of over $400 million, the Al Mirqab is one of the most expensive yachts in the world.

In addition to the Emir of Qatar, there are several other notable owners of superyachts.

Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos all own luxurious vessels.

Bezos yacht, the aptly named The Flying Fox, is one of the longest superyachts in the world at a staggering 414 feet in length.

The Flying Fox also comes with a host of amenities, such as a helipad, swimming pool, spa, and multiple outdoor entertaining areas.

Bezos also reportedly spent over $400 million on the vessel.

Other notable owners of superyachts include Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, who owns the $200 million Kingdom 5KR, and Oracle founder Larry Ellison, who owns the $200 million Rising Sun.

There are also many lesser-known owners, such as hedge-fund manager Ken Griffin, who owns the $150 million Aviva, and investor Sir Philip Green, who owns the $100 million Lionheart.

No matter who owns them, superyachts are sure to turn heads.

With their impressive size, luxurious amenities, and hefty price tags, these vessels have become a symbol of wealth and prestige.

Whether its the Emir of Qatar or a lesser-known owner, the worlds superyacht owners are sure to make a statement.

What Amenities are Included on Superyachts?

Owning a superyacht is a sign of wealth and prestige, and many of the worlds most prominent billionaires have their own vessels.

Some owners even opt for hot tubs or jacuzzis for relaxing afternoons in the sun.

No matter what amenities a superyacht has, it is sure to be an experience like no other.

From the sleek interiors to the luxurious outdoor features, these vessels provide a unique, luxurious experience that is unrivaled on land.

Whether you’re looking for a relaxing escape or an exciting adventure, a superyacht is sure to provide.

How Much Do Superyachts Cost?

elada yacht owner name

When it comes to superyachts, the sky is the limit when it comes to cost.

These luxury vessels come with hefty price tags that can range from anywhere between $30 million to over $400 million.

So, if youre in the market for a superyacht, youre looking at an investment that could easily break the bank.

The cost of a superyacht is driven by a variety of factors, including size, amenities, and customization.

Generally, the larger the yacht, the more expensive it will be.

Superyachts typically range in size from 100 feet to over 200 feet, and they can be as wide as 40 feet.

The bigger the yacht, the more luxurious features and amenities it will have.

Amenities also play a significant role in the cost of a superyacht.

While some owners prefer to keep their yachts out of the public eye, others have made headlines with their extensive amenities.

From swimming pools and helicopter pads to on-board cinemas and spas, the sky is the limit when it comes to customizing a superyacht.

The more amenities a superyacht has, the more expensive it will be.

Finally, customization is another major factor that will drive up the cost of a superyacht.

Many luxury vessels have custom-designed interiors that are tailored to the owners tastes.

From custom furniture and artwork to lighting and audio systems, the cost of a superyacht can quickly escalate depending on the level of customization.

In short, the cost of a superyacht can vary widely depending on its size, amenities, and customization.

While some may be able to get away with spending a few million dollars, others may end up spending hundreds of millions of dollars on their dream yacht.

No matter what your budget is, its important to do your research and find out exactly what youre getting for your money before signing on the dotted line.

Keeping Superyachts Out of the Public Eye

When it comes to owning a superyacht, some owners prefer to keep their vessels out of the public eye.

Understandably, these individuals are concerned with privacy and discretion, and therefore tend to take measures to ensure their yachts are not visible to outsiders.

For instance, some superyacht owners opt to keep their vessels in private marinas, away from the public areas of larger ports.

Additionally, some yacht owners may choose to hire security guards to patrol and protect their vessels while they are moored or sailing.

In addition to physical security, some superyacht owners also use technology to keep their vessels out of the public eye.

For example, a yacht owner may choose to install a satellite-based communications system that allows them to keep their vessel completely off-radar.

This system works by bouncing signals off satellites rather than transmitting them, making it virtually impossible for anyone to track the yachts movements.

Finally, some superyacht owners also choose to limit the number of people who have access to their vessels.

For instance, the owner may only allow family members and close friends to board the yacht.

Additionally, the owner may choose to employ a limited number of staff to help maintain the vessel and keep it running smoothly.

These individuals may be required to sign non-disclosure agreements to ensure they do not disclose any information about the yacht or its owner.

Overall, while some superyacht owners may choose to keep their vessels out of the public eye, there are still plenty of other ways to show off the opulence associated with owning a superyacht.

From swimming pools and helicopter pads to on-board cinemas and spas, there are many luxurious amenities that can make a superyacht the envy of any jet setter.

Final Thoughts

Superyachts are a symbol of luxury and status, and the list of yacht owners reads like a who’s who of billionaires.

From the Emir of Qatar’s world-record breaking $400 million yacht to Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s vessel with a helicopter pad and on-board spa, the amenities of these luxury vessels are truly stunning.

With prices ranging from $30 million to over $400 million, owning a superyacht is an expensive endeavor.

Whether you’re looking to purchase one or just curious to learn more about the owners and their amenities, this guide will provide you with all the information you need to stay up to date with the superyacht scene.

modern-classic-bilgin-super-yacht-clarity-was-launched-in-2015

A Moment of Clarity: Inside Bilgin Yachts’ modern classic

First published in the November 2015 edition of ShowBoats International

It’s always fun to speculate how a yacht got her name. Clarity ’s owner saw the Bilgin 160 under construction and envisioned what he could do to perfect her. Was that how she got her name? So much for that idea, Clarity was already the name of his Johnson 87 .

The new Clarity , a graceful 48 metre yacht (including the 5.5 metre bowsprit) that her owner and Bilgin Yachts exhibited at the 2015 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show , is not easy to fit into one category: new build, refit or even classic. She is a little of each.

The “classic” part is obvious. She looks like she was born in a different era, but she is a recent creation from Bilgin Yachts, a custom yacht builder based in Istanbul, Turkey, and she is the second boat in the Bilgin Classic 160 series. The first, M&M , was launched in 2012 and was recently renamed Timeless .

No particular vessel inspired the design. “We have built our classic series with our own ideas,” says Yildirim Bilgen, the company’s sales director. “The main idea was to build a yacht with a design that will last forever.” Bilgin did the styling in-house.

Turkish boat builders, in particular, are very well-versed in wood construction, and Bilgin’s experienced craftsmen, with top-notch tooling at their fingertips, had no trouble recreating the feel of a bygone era. The shipyard also builds cold-moulded vessels, such as 44.2 metre Elada , with a reverse bow developed with H2 Yacht Design and delivered last year. For the classic series, however, Bilgin selected steel for the hull and composite for the superstructure.

The full-displacement hull has a bilge keel and bulbous bow for all-ocean seakeeping. Modestly powered Caterpillar engines yield a serene cruising speed of around 10 knots befitting of the yacht’s appearance. The attractive funnel that she sports is a mere concession to styling, as are the mast and bowsprit.

Inside, Clarity has no shortage of modern conveniences, including a galley with stainless steel appliances, navigation and electronic equipment, zero-speed stabilizers and VSAT.

“I think the Classic is just that — a classic. It reminds me of the glory days of yachting, or the romance of yachting with the style to match,” says Clarity ’s owner. “I think it takes one back to the days when Onassis would entertain the film stars, world leaders and celebrities on the Christina O or earlier to the days of Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland sailing around the Caribbean. We have been careful obviously to have every modern convenience, technology and toy on the vessel, but we also worked hard to give her a chic, comfortable interior.

“I didn’t want a vessel that looked the same as everyone’s; nowadays you sail into a port and everyone seems to have exactly the same brand of boat. I think she is unique and looks fantastic inside and out.”

So, is Clarity a new build or refit? Actually, she’s a bit of both. Bilgin Yachts received great response from its first Classic 160, even as she was under construction, and started building the second Classic before it had a firm order. Hull No. 2 was already very advanced but on hold when she attracted the attention of her current owner, who thought she could benefit from a few tweaks. That’s where the refit part comes in.

“The new layout was based on utilizing the space much more effectively than the previous design. We wanted the interior layout to be much more of what you would expect on this type of vessel with every modern amenity not only for guests but also for crew,” he says.

His vision required reconfiguring all decks, especially the main and lower decks. Step one was moving the crew quarters from their location forward on the lower deck toward the aft section, and creating two new interior accesses, one from the galley and the other from the guest corridor (originally the only access to the crew quarters was through a foredeck hatch). Three crew cabins, a mess and a laundry room are now in close proximity. The captain has a nice double cabin next to the bridge.

Step two was transforming the space previously occupied by crew cabins into a beautiful en suite for the master suite, which is located forward on the main deck. The bed still faces a gorgeous span of windows and stairs now lead down to a marble bathroom. Step three was adding a convivial bar on the upper deck and expanding lounging areas.

Clarity looks just as attractive as Timeless and lest you pay attention, the two Classic 160s may appear identical — then you notice the mast has moved from the main deck to the upper deck. Little by little, like a game of ‘Spot the difference’, more of the details that set them apart emerge from the big picture.

The superstructure on Clarity is longer to accommodate the master stateroom/en suite redesign and her upper aft deck sports a large, horseshoe-shaped bar. The sunpads forward on the bridge deck are much larger. The coaming is higher, LED lights underline the deck, the bridge deck now has a dayhead, there is new storage and passageways and the life rafts were repositioned, among the many differences. Looking at the results, you’d think accomplishing this transformation was easy. There is nothing that feels forced or contrived about the layout — it works.

Project manager Frank “Bobby” Ball oversaw and meticulously documented the conversion. Creating Clarity as she appears today meant the yard had to cut through steel, remove bulkheads, reroute pipes and get approval for each step from classification society RINA. The early days felt more like destruction.

“It was difficult because we took a perfectly good boat and at first, we worked backward,” Ball says. “When we finally were able to go forward, it became very rewarding. Not enough can be said about the quality of the construction; and [the yard] will build whatever you want.”

The owner agrees. “They are very open to delivering whatever specification is given to them and happy to work with any of the nautical build standards,” he says. “We decided at the outset that we would have a build engineer in Turkey working alongside the independent RINA engineer and then make regular trips to inspect progress and discuss any issues that would arise during the build process. This worked really effectively, and as a result, I think we got a great product from Bilgin.”

With several facilities in sprawling Istanbul, Bilgin Yachts does most everything in house and employs several engineers. It is currently expanding its building capacity with a large new construction hall on the grounds of West Istanbul Marina. This year, it delivered both 49.9 metre  Dursur to an owner from the Middle East and Clarity , the first Bilgin to come to North America.

As for Clarity , there likely will be another yacht with her name in the future. The owner had a lot of fun conceiving her. “I will definitely be undertaking the process again,” he says. What does he envision? “Something bigger I would imagine, maybe Nero sized, who can tell?”

An urgent search has been launched after a luxury yacht carrying 22 people sunk off the coast of Palermo, southern Italy.

The vessel, named the Bajesian, got into trouble at around 5am after it was hit by a tornado while sailing near Porticello, a fishing village in Sicily. Four Brits, a Canadian and two Americans are said to be among those missing. The body of one man - believed to be a kitchen crew member - has been retrieved from the water, local media has reported.

Six people remain missing, one of whom is Brit tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch , it has been reported. The mogul, who's family is said to own the superyacht, reportedly vanished following the disaster this morning. His wife, Angela Bacares, is among the survivors who have been brought to shore.

Emergency services have rescued 15 people, including a one-year-old baby and its mother, but coast guard patrols are continuing the desperate search for the others on board the vessel that got into difficulty around 5am this morning.

It is understood that the boat sank during bad weather as a tornado hit Sicily. Divers have already reached the hull, 49 meters deep, about half a mile from the coast. Survivors have been taken to Porticciolo.

Fisherman who joined search effort found 'only debris'

A fisherman who went to the yacht's aid and remained on site for several hours has heartbreakingly revealed he found no survivors in the water, only debris.

"There were two sailboats half a mile away from the harbour with their anchors at sea," Fabio Cefalu told Italian media on Monday.

"After 10 minutes we saw a flare in the sky, we waited about 10 minutes to see the intensity of the tornado and we went out to sea.

"We were first to give rescue but we found no one at sea, we only found cushions and the remains of the boat."

Mr Cefalu says the storm struck in the middle of the night shortly before 4am.

"I saw this morning at about 3.30am this bad weather that was approaching; we were about to go fishing and we stood still for 20 minutes to see the intensity of the tornado coming.

"At about 3.55am it took us full into the harbour and destroyed everything on the pier, everything."

Who is still missing?

As search efforts remain ongoing with cave divers now involved in the rescue effort, six passengers are still unaccounted for on the sunken super-yacht

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, 59 and his 18 year old daughter Hannah, as well as Morgan Stanley chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife are still missing.

The two others that are still unaccounted for are Mr.Lynch’s attorney Christopher Morvillo and his wife Nada.

In total 22 passengers were on board when a sudden tornado sunk the luxury vessel, with 15 having been safely rescued in the aftermath of the disaster.

Tragically, one person has so far been confirmed dead, the boat’s chef Canadian Ricardo Thomas.

Doctor shares what happened inside superyacht as it began to sink

Charlotte Golunski, a heroic mother who managed to save the life of her one-year-old child by holding her above her head after the Bayesian sank, has shared her experience while recovering in hospital.

Dr Domenico Cipolla, A&E chief at the Giovanni di Cristina paediatric hospital in Palermo, described Charlotte's experience, and told reporters: "She told me that while they were sleeping, at a certain point the yacht overturned due to the tornado, and they found themselves in the water.

"Some of them immediately managed to get onto the lifeboat. And some, evidently, didn't make it. She told me that she was in the water for no more than two, three seconds, and she managed to save the baby, to keep her arms up, and then, with the others, they were able to get on the lifeboat, and then, I think, they were rescued by the coastguard.”

Morgan Stanley chairman reportedly among missing

Reports in the Times and local Italian media indicate that one of those still missing after the yacht capsized is the Chairman of Morgan Stanley International.

Sicilian authorities have confirmed that the banking executive Jonathan Bloomer and his wife are among those still missing after the Bayesian sank. The search operation off the coast of Messina is continuing through the night.

Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter are also among the six people still unaccounted for after the yacht sank below the waves, after 4am on Monday. Sadly, the body of the yacht's chef, Ricardo Thomas, is reported to have been recovered.

Horror of Mediterranean yacht tragedy deepens as divers glimpse 'though the portholes'

Six people remain missing after a luxury superyacht belonging to UK tech magnate Mike Lynch capsized in the Mediterranean, just off the coast of Sicily in the early hours of Monday morning. The horrifying aftermath of the tragedy left cushions and deck chairs floating in the water, as well as 15 people who had survived, clinging to a life raft.

A tornado struck the £14m vessel while it was anchored at port, causing the mast to snap and the yacht to capsize in a matter of minutes. Many of the 22 guests and crew on board the 'Bayesian' were in their cabins when the storm struck. 59-year-old Mike Lynch and daughter Hannah, 18, are among those missing, though his wife Angela managed to escape the stricken vessel.

Italian rescuers who dived around 50 metres to the capsized vessel reportedly told Salvo Cocina, head of Sicily's civil protection agency, that they had spotted a grim sight "through the portholes" of the 183-foot superyacht. The divers are alleged to have seen bodies inside the vessel, according to Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera. One body has been recovered of the seven that were initially reported missing, that of the boat's chef, Ricardo Thomas.

Locals continue to watch search efforts while praying for good news

Locals in the quaint fishing village of Porticello have gathered overnight to watch the ongoing search efforts, as two giant floodlights illuminate the ocean while the rescue mission is underway.

Three fire and rescue trucks and a big white tent can be seen according to witnesses at the scene, while a coastguard vessel with blue flashing lights circles the water with cave divers on board around 100 meters away.

The expert divers are combing the area where the yacht stood just hours ago, but with minimal light and more storms on the way, the process is slow and gruelling work.

Oceanographer offer fresh hope to search

As the search remains ongoing overnight, an oceanographer has revealed that the weather window for searching this evening is closing as more storms are forecast to hit in the hours head.

Despite no more survivors being found since this morning, Dr Simon Boxall, from Southampton University told Sky News that, it's important to continue the search for now.

"There are stories of people getting caught in air bubbles, so it's worth looking in the vessel, but time will tell," he said.

Dr Boxall said current warm sea temperatures, 4C above the 20-year average, likely played a role as they can fuel storms and increase the chance of waterspouts.

In his opinion, the experienced crew would have already known about low pressure and bad weather in the area, but were most likely “just caught unawares” by a sudden flare up in wind.

This could easily have “destabilised the vessel” if the storm snapped or damaged the ship’s 75 meter mast.

Rescue effort continues throughout the night

Experienced cave divers for deep sea recoveries continue the rescue operation for missing people who were on board a yacht that sank off Porticello, near Palermo, Sicily, Italy, on Monday morning.

At least one person has died, six remain missing and 15 passengers were rescued, after a 56-meter-long luxury sailboat, the Bayesian, with 22 people on board, sank at dawn during a tornado.

A photo taken from the top of the Bayesian's mast, which reportedly split in half as the yacht sunk this morning, shows the sheer scale of the vessel.

Mike Lynch was living 'second life' after being freed

The ' British Bill Gates' missing after his luxury superyacht sunk off the coast of Palermo was living a "second life" after being freed from a prolonged 13-year legal battle.

58-year-old Mike Lynch , who was acquitted in June following a US fraud trial, was among the six people who remain unaccounted for after their chartered sailboat sank when a tornado over the water known as a waterspout struck the area overnight.

Mr Lynch's disappearance comes just months after cleared of charges alleging he orchestrated a fraud and conspiracy leading up to an $11 billion deal (£8billion) that turned into a costly albatross for Silicon Valley pioneer Hewlett Packard. The not-guilty verdicts reached in June this year by a federal court jury in San Francisco followed an 11-week criminal trial that delved into the history of HP’s 2011 acquisition of Autonomy, a business software that Lynch founded and then oversaw as CEO in Britain.

Search continues for six people missing

Six people remain missing after a superyacht capsized in Sicily, Italy, in the early hours of the morning.

22 people were on board the vessel when it capsized and sank. One man has tragically died and specialist rescue teams are likely to continue searching overnight to trace the other six.

Canadian foreign office in talks with Italian authorities

Canada's foreign ministry is in contact with local authorities in Sicily following reports that there were Canadian citizens onboard the Bayesian when it sunk, BBC News reports.

A spokesperson said they are "aware of reports that a Canadian citizen has died".

Mike Lynch's co-defendant who tragically died is pictured

Stephen Chamberlain, who stood trial alongside Mike Lynch in a high-profile fraud case, was put on life support after he was critically injured in a car crash in Cambridgeshire at the weekend.

He has since tragically died of his injuries, his lawyer confirmed on Monday.

Mr Chamberlain was reportedly hit by a car in Saturday morning's incident and rushed to hospital.

Tragedy to be probed by Marine Accident investigators

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch said four of its inspectors were being deployed to Palermo on Monday to probe what happened.

A basic assessment of the scene will be made by the team, with no investigation launched at this stage, the PA news agency reports.

Crew are 'well known and liked across the industry'

Missing crew members on the Bayesian are "well known and liked across the industry", a yachtsman has told Sky News.

He said the vessel was a "well respected boat and well known in the industry, especially on the Mediterranean and Caribbean circuits", adding: "The weather around Sicily can be slightly unpredictable but this does seem to have been an unusually large freak storm.

“The missing crew members are well known and liked across the industry. We have been nervously waiting for updates since this morning. My thoughts are with all involved during this awful moment."

Bayesian was 'in the wrong place at the wrong time'

Salvo Cocina from Sicily's civil protection agency says the Bayesian yacht was "in the wrong place at the wrong time".

Another superyacht nearby, the Sir Robert Baden Powell, wasn't as badly damaged and helped rescue some of the 15 survivors. The aggressive storm has been put down to a "waterspout" which can form on the base of thunder clouds.

Much like tornadoes, waterspouts bring powerful winds, causing a water mist around the column of rotating air.

Mum saved one-year-old baby by holding her 'above head'

A fearless British mum saved her one-year-old baby from drowning after they were caught in the Sicily superyacht disaster.

Charlotte Golunski has been named as the mother who bravely rescued her daughter in the tragedy early on Monday morning when the £14 million vessel was struck by a tornado off the coast of Porticello. The boat, named the Bajesian, sunk in the weather , launching an urgent mission for six missing people.

Ms Golunski, 35, was on board the yacht at the weekend and was woken by the floods of water. She claims she grabbed her daughter before being forced into the water, using all her efforts to keep her afloat.

Mike Lynch's co-defendant dies after being hit by car

Billionaire tech tycoon Mike Lynch's co-defendant in his US fraud trial has died in hospital after being hit by a car on Saturday - just days before the Lynch tragically went missing after his superyacht capsized and sank off the coast of Sicily.

Inside the luxury Bayesian superyacht

The Bayesian superyacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, can accommodate 12 passengers in four double cabins, a triple and the master suite, plus crew accommodations, according to Charter World and Yacht Charters. It had an initial asking price of £30million.

The vessel, which previously was named Salute when it flew under a Dutch flag, featured a sleek, minimalist interior of light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions and photos on the charter sites.

Mike Lynch's co-defendant on life support in UK

A man who stood trial alongside Mike Lynch , the Brit tech tycoon missing after the superyacht sinking in Palermo, in a US fraud case is on life support following a car crash.

Stephen Chamberlain is fighting for his life after he was critically injured in a collision in Cambridgeshire at the weekend. Mr Chamberlain was reportedly hit by a car in Saturday morning's incident and rushed to hospital.

It's understood he was put on life support on Sunday. Mr Chamberlain had stood trial in the US after being accused of the same fraud and conspiracy charges as his former boss, British tech tycoon Mike Lynch.

Those missing 'could still be in yacht'

The seven missing passengers could still be inside the yacht, which is more than 50 metres underwater, authorities say.

Francesco Venuto, the spokesperson for Sicily's civil protection agency, tells the BBC that they "think [the corpses] must be there [in the boat]".

"We've been searching all day with helicopters and boats, we've found nothing. That wouldn't make sense, in this conditions we should have found something by now," Venuto adds.

Everything we know as search operation continues

  • A superyacht carrying 22 people capsized in Italy during an aggressive storm, leaving one man dead
  • 15 people were rescued and 7 remain missing, including British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah
  • Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, has survived the disaster
  • British passenger Charlotte Golunski, who also survived, says she rescued her one-year-old daughter by holding her up in the water until they managed to get on a lifeboat
  • The Italian coastguard has launched a search and rescue operation using specialist divers, helicopters and patrol boats
  • The search is expected to continue overnight

No investigation launched at this stage

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch said four of its inspectors were being deployed to Palermo following the sinking of the Bayesian yacht.

A basic assessment of the scene will be made by the team with no investigation launched at this stage, the PA news agency understands.

Where did the yacht sink?

The vessel had been anchored around a half-mile off Porticello, about 12 miles east of the Sicilian capital, Palermo.

More photos of the search operation

Images show coastguard rescue teams continuing to scour the area where a superyacht capsized in Italy this morning.

Sicily's civil protection agency, Salvatore Cocina, says the rescue operation will continue overnight - as emergency workers will be joined by a specialist caving search and rescue diving team from Rome.

Hero mum who saved baby in yacht tragedy

A British mum today told how she dramatically saved the life of her baby in a yachting accident which has left seven people feared dead.

The mum who desperately held onto her one-year-old daughter says she managed to clamber onboard a lifeboat with 10 other people as their boat capsized.

Charlotte Golunski, 36, said: "For two seconds I lost my baby in the sea, then I immediately hugged her again amid the fury of the waves. I held her tightly, close to me, while the sea was stormy. Many were screaming. Luckily the lifeboat inflated and 11 of us managed to get on board."

Local fisherman 'saw T-shirts floating in water'

Giuseppe, a local fisherman, has told reporters that he "saw mats and T-shirts floating in the sea" while onboard the nearby motorboat 'Francesca’, adding that he saw people being rescued in an inflatable boat.

Six passengers remain missing and the coastguard is continuing the search and rescue operation "incessantly".

Rescue operation to continue overnight

They are hoping to "achieve results" either during the night or by tomorrow morning at the latest.

Lynch feared he would die and said bye before tragedy

British tech mogul Mike Lynch , who remains missing after a yacht capsized off the coast of Sicily, shared a chilling premonition of death just a month before the harrowing incident.

Mr Lynch was among those plunged into stormy seas when the yacht, named the Bayesian, overturned on Monday morning. 22 people were believed to have been on board the vessel which sunk off Palermo during a tornado.

Speaking to the NY Post last month, the entrepreneur raised concerns that he could perish in jail before proving his innocence in a high-stakes fraud case over the sale of his software company. But he was later exonerated of all accusations related to the staggering $9 billion (£6.9 billion) transaction with a leading US tech enterprise.

What we know about the 184ft-luxury Bayesian yacht

Bayesian, the yacht which capsized in Italy believed to be carrying British passengers, is 56 metres long, according to ship tracking website VesselFinder.

A man has died and six people are missing after a UK-flagged superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily in a tornado - with a prominent British businessman among those unaccounted for.

Technology tycoon Mike Lynch owned the 56-metre vessel (183ft), named Bayesian.

Mr Lynch, known as the "British Bill Gates", has been in the headlines in recent months over a high-profile fraud case.

In June, he was cleared of all charges by a US jury related to the sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011.

Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah is among those missing after his yacht sank, local media reports.

Mr Lynch's wife Angela Bacares is confirmed to be among the 15 people who were rescued after the British-flagged yacht capsized at around 4.30am local time (3.30am UK time) on Monday.

One body has also been recovered, after being found close to the vessel, according to local media.

The boat was hit by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, that struck where the yacht had been anchored during the storm.

Police divers have been trying to reach the hull of the ship, which is resting at a depth of 50 metres (163 feet) off Porticello, near Palermo.

During the rescue effort, divers saw "corpses through the portholes" of the wreck, Salvo Cocina, the head of the Civil Protection of Sicily, said.

“They were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” he added.

The incident comes days after Stephen Chamberlain, Mr Lynch's co-accused in the fraud trial, died in a car collision in Stretham, Cambridgeshire.

Mr Chamberlain's lawyer said he was out running on Saturday when he was hit by a car.

Most on board yacht thought to be British

The boat had 12 passengers and a crew of 10 people. Four of the missing passengers are British and two are American, Italian news website la Reppublica reports.

Most of those on board were reported to be from Britain - including a mother and one-year-old daughter who are among those rescued.

Speaking to the Giornale Di Sicilia newspaper, Charlotte Golunski said: "For two seconds I lost my baby in the sea, then I immediately hugged her again amid the fury of the waves.

"I held her tightly, close to me, while the sea was stormy. Many were screaming. Luckily, the lifeboat inflated and 11 of us managed to get on board."

Ms Golunski was reportedly given stitches for a chest injury following the ordeal. The father of the child also survived, Mr Cocina said.

Eight of the 15 people rescued and taken ashore at Porticello were taken to hospital, while the others were taken to a hotel.

The Italian coast guard said the boat had passengers from Britain, the US, and Canada.

Meanwhile, multiple Italian news outlets reported that people on the boat were from Britain, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and Ireland.

British-French citizens were also among those on the superyacht, according to reports.

'I saw it sinking with my own eyes'

Pietro Asciutto, a fisherman from Porticello who witnessed the storm, told local media: "I was at home when the tornado hit. I immediately closed all the windows. Then I saw the boat, it had only one mast, it was very big. I saw it suddenly sink."

He added: "I think the whirlwind came from Porticello... shortly afterwards I went down to Santa Nicolicchia Bay to get a better look at what was happening.

"The boat was still floating, then all of a sudden it disappeared. I saw it sinking with my own eyes."

Fabio Cefalu, another local fisherman, called rescue services after spotting the wrecked boat off Porticello.

He said: "Around 3.55am we witnessed the whirlwind. After a quarter of an hour, we saw a flare 500 metres away from the dock.

"Around 4:35am we went out to sea for the rescue, however, we only saw the remains of the boat floating. There were no men in the sea. So we immediately called the harbour master's office."

Damaged caused by the storm

A spokesman for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said: "We are in contact with the local authorities following an incident in Sicily, and stand ready to provide consular support to British nationals affected."

Camper and Nicholsons, which provided yacht management services for the Bayesian, has confirmed the vessel sank at around 4.30am local time.

The company said in a statement: "The Italian coast guard is leading search and rescue operations, and has safely recovered 15 individuals. Efforts to locate the seven missing persons continue.

"Our priority is assisting with the ongoing search and providing all necessary support to the rescued passengers and crew."

Online charter sites listed the Bayesian as available for rent for up to €195,000 (about £166,339) a week.
