Cool Breeze - Brenta 80 DC by Michael Schmidt Yachtbau

Brenta 80 dc (christened s/y "cool breeze") is the new baby by michael schmidt under his new brand: michael schmidt yachtbau  in greifswald, northern germany..

Cool Breeze is the result of 40 years experience by Michael Schmidt, the founder of luxury sailing yacht builder HanseYachts. Mr. Schmidt, also the winner of the legendary Admiral’s Cup regatta in 1985 summarizes that project:

“This boat is an accumulation of my life’s work”

The exterior lines of the Brenta 80 DC were made by Lorenzo Argento who worked for the well-known Italian yacht design studio Luca Brenta. He was involved in most WALLY and B-Yachts projects over the last 20 years and founded his own design studio in 2016.

Responsible for the interior is the award-winning architect  Sir David Chipperfield . As a sailor and owner of a Brenta 42, he integrated his love to the sea in this project. He designed a very clean interior.

Michael Schmidt explains:

“The Brenta 80 DC is a completely European product, being built in Greifswald, Germany on the Baltic Sea. Brenta Design of Italy provides the exterior design with the styling and interior being created by David Chipperfield Architects of Great Britain and in RegaYacht, we have found a competent partner for all the composite work.”

Andreas Bock, Project Manager at MS Yachtbau commented:

“Up until now, most bluewater yachts have been heavy and slow. By using the lighter and more durable carbon fiber technology, we’re able to create a yacht that is not only faster but incredibly strong, durable and ultimately safer. Carbon fiber provides a very low displacement, more accurate control and more stability resulting in a more efficient yacht. It’s built for those who embrace the cruising lifestyle, sprinting large distances.”

Shipyard report : Visit to Michael Schmidt and his shipyard YYachts

Grey, wet and cold. At the end of November, northern Germany is at its most beautiful. Clearly, in terms of weather, there are better times of year to visit a boatyard in the far north-east of Germany. BOOTE EXCLUSIV has not been to the company that Michael Schmidt founded eight years ago to build the Brenta 80 DS "Cool Breeze" for himself. The 24-metre sloop, laminated from carbon fibre and fitted with an extraordinary interior by star architect Sir David Chipperfield, made headlines in the yachting world and has long since sailed with a new owner. Michael Schmidt Yachtbau has become a shipyard that has managed to deliver 41 yachts between 70 and 90 feet in length in eight years. Figures that competitors from Finland, Italy and South Africa grudgingly take note of.

Anyone who has ever set foot in a shipyard knows how complex boatbuilding can be. Numerous trades that have to work in perfect synchronisation so that in the end - just in time for the launching date - the owner is happy. It doesn't sound easy, and we are all the more excited when we cross the city limits of Greifswald at the end of November and finally turn into the car park in the Ladebow district in the north-east of the pretty Hanseatic town. Michael Schmidt Yachtbau is emblazoned in large letters on the southern wall of the hall. Some visitors may be taken aback here, as Schmidt's team has been skilfully and uniformly marketing the company's fortunes under the YYachts brand name for a few years now.

Why YYachts?

Why Y? Even Marketing Director Stefan Schöler, who together with Managing Partner Dirk Zademack meets us at the entrance to the office building, is unable to answer this question quickly. The two-storey office complex, made from containers and connected to the shipyard hall via a solid iron staircase, is the control centre of the company, which currently employs around 40 people, including the satellite office in Palma de Mallorca. "Our design office is located in Palma and is managed by Francesca Modica," explains Stefan Schöler. With university degrees in yacht design and architecture, Modica first worked for Lorenzo Argento Yacht Design in Italy before Michael Schmidt poached her for YYachts in 2020. Since then, she has headed up the creative team on the popular Balearic island. The shipyard founder also spends a lot of time in the Mallorcan capital and, at the age of 74, is currently focussing more on the work of his designers. With the ultimate proximity to the Mediterranean sailing mecca, good ideas come naturally.

But the experienced sailor is never short of ideas anyway. Nobody builds like Schmidt - compromises? Never! Many decades on regatta and cruising yachts have moulded him into a walking yachting and sailing encyclopaedia. "Nobody knows as much about shipyards, models, ships and sailing as Schmidt; he is a mentor to me and I still learn a lot from him," admits Schöler. He has been working with the exceptional boat builder for 19 years.

Team consists of full-blooded sailors

Of course, 50 yachts in eight years is only possible with a team that pulls together and knows all about life on the water. The specialists in his founding team had to be one thing above all: thoroughbred sailors like himself. As the search for the optimum never ends for Schmidt, new names have emerged over the years. While designers Luca Brenta and Sir David Chipperfield were still working in creative unison on his 23.99 metre-long "Cool Breeze", he switched to American Bill Tripp as designer and Danish studio Norm Architects from Copenhagen for the interior design of his new Y-line. The British interior experts from Design Unlimited are also sometimes involved, for example on board the almost 30 metre long Y9. Schmidt took a different approach for the completely newly developed Y8, which is also 23.99 metres long: yacht designer Javier Jaudenes, who also lives in Palma, designed the hull lines and exterior styling, while Francesca Modica from the shipyard's own design team was responsible for the interior design. Construction number one of the current Y8 is currently at an advanced stage and is due to sail this spring.

Five construction slots are available in the 70-metre-long hall, and three bays are currently occupied: Y7, Y8 and Y9. "We have optimised the efficiency of the shipyard over the last two years and are currently in the process of making the best possible use of the construction slots," explains shipyard boss Dirk Zademack, who joined Michael Schmidt Yachtbau as Managing Partner in 2019 after 13 years at various large German yacht shipyards. A lot has happened in Ladebow since then.

Customer can choose from several layout options

"We offer the customer between five and six layout options to choose from for each model, and yet we have managed to ensure that the hull structure always remains the same. This means we can have the hull and deck laminated and at the same time start fitting out the interior, which in turn is created in modules that are lifted almost completely into the hull shell by our two cranes."

Adjacent to the boatbuilding hall with five bays and a large area for the interior fitters, the shipyard has also invested in a state-of-the-art neighbouring paint shop. "The investments made in recent years have paid off, and we can currently build five to six yachts per year," says Zademack. The construction times of the models vary greatly. "A Y7 is built in around six months, the Y8 in eleven months, and we work on our small series flagship Y9 for 18 months," Stefan Schöler explains, and Dirk Zademack adds: "Growth at any price is not our motto. We want to keep getting better and further improve our quality." The shipyard founder is also in favour of this. He still personally tests every yacht that leaves his halls. And preferably in an honest breeze - mild summer breezes don't count. "It has to creak in the sheets," laughs Stefan Schöler. And how long will Michael Schmidt continue? As we all know, no answer is also an answer ...

Norm Architects Introduce Scandinavian Minimalism to MS Yachtbau's Luxury Sailing Yachts

Project name, architecture practice.

Designed by Danish practice Norm Architects in collaboration with acclaimed US-American naval architect  Bill Tripp , and built in Greifswald, Germany, by esteemed yacht-builder MS Yachtbau , it would be fair to say that as far as sailing yachts go, “ Bella ” has everything going for it. Measuring almost 22 metres in length, with a sleek, aerodynamic silhouette and elegant interiors of Scandinavian minimalism, Bella, the first of the Y/Yachts model Y7, marries competitive sailing performance with comfort and style like no other.

Founded by Michael Schmidt in 2014, MS Yachtbau grew out a desire to manufacture the perfect sailing yacht. With an equal emphasis on both technology and aesthetics, the brand’s luxury carbon yachts are not only lightweight and fast, but also sport an interior design sophistication not usually associated with sailing boats. Manufactured in collaboration with an eclectic selection of international designers, each Y/Yachts model uniquely marries design, craftsmanship, function and the latest technology, and Bella is no exception.

Underpinned by a minimalist sensibility of elegant simplicity and understated refinement, the interior design is characterised by tactile surfaces, natural materials and matt finishes. Extensive use of wood veneer that gently follows the curves of the yacht’s hull, concealed lighting, and a selection of smooth and coarse fabrics create cosy, homely spaces that are also highly sophisticated. Crisp details and high-quality craftsmanship, from the frameless doors and seamless cabinetry to the convex and concave veneer surfaces, imbue the yacht’s interior with a sculptural quality as well as echo the streamlined profile of the exterior.

What’s really impressive though is how little the spaces reminds one of a yacht interior despite having to follow strict safety guidelines that require for example all furniture to be fixed and handrails to be installed. Instead of curtailing their vision though, Peter Eland and Linnea Ek Blæhr of Norm Architects have taken advantage of such requirements to enhance the yacht’s minimalist sensibility. Case in point, the mandatory handrails whose lithe silhouette of black steel is picked up by the slender desk lamp and bedside light fittings, as well as other black details throughout the interiors. From the smallest features such as these, to the extraordinary engineering that allows the 28.5 tons yacht to smoothly sail across the sea, Bella is a beauty inside and out.

74-Fuß-Megayacht von MS Yachtbau

Greifswald (SP) Michael Schmidt Yachtbau (MSY) in Deutschland hat mit einer 74-Fuß-Segelyacht der Yx|7 Explorer-Linie eine neue Linie von Crossover-Segelyachten vorgestellt. Sie sollen den Speed Y-Serie mit maximalem Komfort verbinden. Diese ganz neue Art von Exploreryachten sei gedacht "für Paare oder Eigner mit einer kleinen Crew gemacht, die mit Abenteuergeist die Welt erkunden möchten, sei es in den Tropen oder in arktischen Gewässern, und die sich dabei auf ein gehöriges Maß an Komfort, Lebensraum und Sicherheit verlassen wollen". Michael "Schmiddl" Schmidt hatte einst die Hanse-Werft gegründet. Die erste Superyacht der neuen Linie ist die Yx|7 Explorer 74. Sie sei "das Ergebnis herausragenden Teamworks mit den Partnern, die beim Bau des aktuellen MSY-Projekts, einer 72-Fuß Forschungsyacht für die Werner-Siemens-Stiftung und des Max-Planck-Instituts für Chemie beteiligt waren". Viele der daraus resultierenden Innovationen und cleveren technischen Lösungen seien jetzt in die Produktion integriert: "Aus dem umweltfreundlichen Forschungsschiff wurde nun mit Mark Tucker von Design Unlimited die neue Exploreryacht konzipiert: Der Rumpf der Yx|7 Explorer 74 wird aus festem und gleichzeitig relativ leichtem Glasfaser-Epoxid-Sandwich mit lokalen Kohlefaser-Verstärkungen gebaut. Das breite Heck und das „Square-Top„-Großsegel garantieren auch hier eine gute Geschwindigkeit unter Segeln." Wie bei Katamaranen und Motoryachten wird die meiste Deckfläche der luxuriösen Megayacht als Lebensraum genutzt. Der Decksalon mit seinen vielen Sitzplätzen bietet die Möglichkeit, die seitlichen und hinteren Fenster und das Dach zu öffnen. Auf der gleichen Ebene befindet sich das Cockpit mit acht Sitzplätzen, integriertem Bimini und der Option von seitlichen Schiebefenstern. Achtern gibt es weitere Optionen, hier sind die zwei Steuerstände das zentrale Element. Beispielhaft für die smarte Handhabung der Yx|7 Explorer 74 werden alle Leinen bis zu den Steuerständen zurückgeführt, um das Segeln alleine oder mit kleiner Crew zu vereinfachen. "Ein weiterer Vorteil ist, dass die Verdrängung der Yacht relativ gering ist, so dass die Eigner wirklich entspanntes Segeln genießen können", heißt es bei MSY. Ein Preis wurde nicht genannt. Nach der Insolvenz der Fosen Yard Stralsund GmbH in der Hansestadt (Landkreis Vorpommern-Rügen) sind davon auch die Arbeiten am Segelschulschiff "Greif“ betroffen. Die Schonerbrigg ist vollständig entkernt und die Außenhaut saniert, so ein Stadtsprecher in Greifswald (Landkreis Vorpommern-Greifswald). Greifswalds Oberbürgermeister Stefan Fassbinder (Die Grünen) ist in Sorge darüber, wie die restlichen Arbeiten am Rumpf und am Hauptdeck umgesetzt werden sollen. Der Insolvenzverwalter müsse nun klären, ob und inwiefern die Stahlbauarbeiten an der "Greif" fortgesetzt werden können. Auch die Masten müssen noch gestellt werden. Zudem sind der Bau und die Montage der Decksaufbauten Teil des Auftrages. Laut Fassbinder sind nur Aufträge bezahlt worden, die auch tatsächlich erledigt worden sind. Er sieht die Fertigstellung im kommenden Jahr in Gefahr. Die Schonerbrigg "Greif“ ist seit 2020 nicht mehr seetüchtig. Deshalb wird sie nun grundsaniert und restauriert. Dafür sind 4,65 Millionen Euro veranschlagt.
