52m Benetti My Falcon refitted into 'party yacht'

The 52 metre  Benetti  yacht My Falcon  has emerged from its major refit at Turkish yard  Bilgin  and completed its transformation into a fully fledged "party yacht".

The sun deck has been transformed into an area to entertain family and friends. The deck has been divided into three large areas featuring a large forward sundeck kitted out with tables, backrests, bar and BBQ. It also features new tables that can be raised and lowered depending on an event's requirements.

The old Jacuzzi has also been replaced with one surrounded by glass walls while all systems have been upgraded. A day head has also been fitted in close proximity to the Jacuzzi.

The owner opted to upgrade the seating areas with glowing fabric to "enliven the atmosphere during night". The bar area has also been rebuilt with more lighting while speakers, lasers, steam units and a DJ cabin have been added to transform the sun deck into a private night club.

Inside, the colours have also been completely changed in the main and upper decks, with the owner opting for an ebony colour scheme.

The layout of the upper deck has also been rearranged to accommodate a new bar area while decorative panels, mirrors and glass all feature in the new interior design scheme. The main saloon, meanwhile, remains largely untouched save for more colourful upholstery on all seating.

Current accommodation is for 12 guests in six cabins each of which will benefit from My Falcon ’s new design scheme.

On the technical side, the automation system, hydraulic mechanism, fire detection system, main switchboard, exhaust discharge and circulating pump all received upgrades. My Falcon  continues to be powered by two 1,850hp Caterpillar diesel engines giving her a top speed of 16 knots.

The new and improved My Falcon  was delivered to her Kuwaiti owner in time for the summer season.

The 5 tragic minutes that sank a superyacht

PORTICELLO, Italy — Survivors of a storm that sank a superyacht off Sicily recounted their ordeal to one of the doctors who rushed to their aid, with some saying it took mere minutes for the 180-foot ship to go down.

Dr. Fabio Genco, head of the Palermo Emergency Medical Services, told NBC News on the phone Thursday that he arrived in the seaside village of Porticello before dawn Monday, about an hour after the $40 million Bayesian sank in the violent and sudden storm.

Of the 22 people onboard, 15 survived despite storm conditions and darkness, climbing onto a lifeboat before being rescued by a nearby sailboat. The crew members have made no public statements so far, though some have been interviewed by investigators.

“They told me that it was all dark, that the yacht hoisted itself up and then went down,” Genco said, recounting what the survivors told him. “All the objects were falling on them. That’s why I immediately made sure, by asking them questions, if they had any internal injuries,” he said.

It appears they had just minutes to abandon the sinking ship, Genco said.

Divers Retrieve Bodies From Tech Tycoon Mike Lynch Yacht Sunk Off Sicily

“They told me that suddenly they found themselves catapulted into the water without even understanding how they had got there,” he said, “And that the whole thing seems to have lasted from 3 to 5 minutes.”

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, which owns Perini Navi, the Bayesian's shipbuilder, told Sky News that there were no flaws with the design or construction of the yacht. He said their structure and keel made boats like that “unsinkable bodies.”

In an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, he disavowed responsibility, blaming instead the actions of the crew. “Mistakes were made,” he said.

Genco said one of his colleagues who arrived at the scene before him initially thought that only three people survived, but the coast guard reported there were other survivors and more emergency services were called in.

When Genco arrived, he found scenes of panic and despair.

“Unfortunately, we are used to such panic scenes because we are used to the shipwrecks that happen on Lampedusa ,” Genco said, referring to the island southwest of Sicily, where the wreckage of boats carrying migrants on the sea journey from North Africa to Italy are often found .

Six of the passengers were declared missing Monday, and by Thursday, the bodies of five had been recovered from the wreck , some 160 feet underwater.

Among those who survived is Angela Bacares, wife of the British tech mogul Mike Lynch , whose body was recovered Thursday.

Divers searching for six missing people following the sinking of a superyacht off Sicily in a storm have found fifth bodies.

Another survivor has been identified as Charlotte Emsley, 35. She told the Italian news agency ANSA that she had momentarily lost hold of her year-old daughter, Sofia, in the water but managed to retrieve her and hold her over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were pulled into safety.

Dr. Domenico Cipolla at the Di Cristina Children’s Hospital in Palermo is also part of a team of medical professionals treating the shipwreck survivors. He told the BBC on Wednesday that Emsley and her daughter, as well as the father of the child, who Cipolla said also survived, are continuing to receive psychological help.

“Psychological support was constant and is constant even today, because basically it is the wounds of the soul that are the most in need of healing in these cases,” Cipolla said.

Genco also told NBC News that he was especially concerned about the child. “She did not understand anything. She was soaking wet and cold,” he said.

Karsten Borner, the Dutch captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, a yacht that was anchored near the Bayesian, said by phone Wednesday that he saw a thunderstorm come in at around 4 a.m. local time (10 p.m. ET) Monday, followed by what looked like a waterspout, a type of tornado that forms over water.

The International Centre for Waterspout Research noted on X that there was a “waterspout outbreak” off Italy on Monday, the day the Bayesian sank.

All the men missing after a luxury yacht sank off Sicily -- who included UK tech tycoon Mike Lynch -- have been found, a coastguard official told.

“I turned on the engine and made maneuvers so that we wouldn’t collide with the Bayesian, which was anchored about 100 meters from us,” Borner said. “Then all of a sudden it disappeared. Then the wind calmed down, we looked around and saw a red flare.”

Borner said he got into his boat’s tender and saw a life raft with 15 people on it. Members of the crew were administering first aid.

“I don’t know why it sank so quickly, but it may have something to do with the mast which was incredibly long,” he said. Questions have been raised about whether the mast was to blame for the accident as tall masts, even with the sails down, have more surface area exposed to the wind, which can contribute to tipping a vessel in a storm.

The CCTV footage that emerged Tuesday showed the yacht’s 250-foot mast, believed to be one of the tallest aluminum sailing masts in the world, lashed by the storm as it appears to tilt to one side before disappearing.

At 88m/288'9", iconic charter yacht Maltese Falcon features a compelling line-up of living areas and modern amenities and abounds in luxury and comfort

One of the most iconic superyachts on the water, the 88m/289ft sailing yacht ‘Maltese Falcon’ turns heads wherever she cruises thanks to her three, DynaRig-designed 190' (58m) masts. Delivered from sailing yacht experts Perini Navi in 2006, the multi-award-winning Maltese Falcon features interior and exterior design from Ken Freivokh and is maintained to an exacting standard with regular refits and upgrades.

Cutting a truly distinctive profile thanks to her revolutionary DynaRig masts, the Maltese Falcon is one of the most universally recognizable sailing yachts in the world. She has received critical acclaim from the yachting industry and global media attention that has led to a total of 10 prestigious awards. She has a glowing reputation as a charter yacht as well, with guests praising her attentive crew, refreshing interiors and continuous connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Exterior Design

Styling the exterior as well as designing the interior, the world-renowned Ken Freivokh has ensured that the spaces are not only stylish, but highly functional. Indeed, beneath her commanding sails the Maltese Falcon offers a collection of dedicated living spaces which all exude a gentle and inviting calm. Creating a number of areas which merge seamlessly with the interior, Ken Freivokh provides guests with options when it comes to enjoy the sun-drenched cruising grounds of Maltese Falcon. With numerous tables and seating arrangements on hand from bow to stern, there’s flexibility for both formal and informal occasions. Perhaps the most impressive feature of the exterior, however, is the projector screen positioned behind the lower sail which doubles up as a screen to allow guests to enjoy a movie night under the stars. As if the idea of an luxury outdoor cinema wasn’t appealing enough, it is the largest of its kind to be found on any superyacht.

Interior Design

The interior of superyacht Maltese Falcon is every bit as impressive as the exterior, with a range of colourful finishings making it truly unique. Balancing contemporary artwork from the Owner’s own collection with more traditionally inspired furnishings, both the communal and guest spaces composed of high quality leather, wood, steel, and glass. The layout balances with form and function like just about every other aspect of the yacht, with an atrium amidships uniting the accommodation on the lower deck and the lobby found on the bridge deck. Complete with a dedicated reading room, full-beam dining room, and a highly spacious main salon, it’s clear that every need of those on board has been comfortably anticipated. Flanked by numerous windows and benefitting from skylights, the amount of natural light which spills into Maltese Falcon is certainly worthy of note.

Guest Accommodation

Comprised of a single master cabin, a VIP suite, and four doubles, the accommodation on board Maltese Falcon provides appropriately beautiful spaces for guests to retire to following a day on the water. Situated on the lower deck, the full-beam master cabin includes two walk in wardrobes, his and hers bathrooms, and Californian king-sized bed. With a massive and warm canvas by Squeak Carnwath occupying the wall, charterers are sure to feel well-rested when waking up in this private sanctuary. Up on the bridge deck, the VIP cabin is furnished with additional easy chairs and enjoys a private terrace which can be accessed via a large sliding door towards the aft. The remaining doubles are found on the lower deck, and, despite their size, are complete with all the entertainment options found in the master and VIP cabin.

Onboard Comfort & Entertainment

Besides being able to catch the latest Hollywood blockbuster on one of her massive sails, Maltese Falcon keeps her guests entertained with a wealth of leisure facilities ranging from a dedicated reading room to a fully-equipped gymnasium. Meals are also enjoyed in the most luxurious of surroundings, with both the formal and alfresco spaces enjoying plenty of beautiful furnishings and artwork. For those who prefer their entertainment to take place on the water, a collection of water toys and tenders- not to mention scuba diving gear and a bespoke inflatable slide- are sure to get everyone’s pulse racing for hours on end. For charterers who enjoy rounding their days off in style, a generously proportioned Jacuzzi which looks out on the movie screen is just the thing.

Special Features

Boasting a wholly outstanding performance, the Maltese Falcon definitely stands out for her ability to make timely passages whilst delivering a thrill to all of those on board. Similarly, her outdoor cinema is the perfect thing for those after some engaging nighttime entertainment whilst enjoying a few drinks.

Performance & Range

Maltese Falcon is built with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure. Powered by twin Deutz engines, she comfortably cruises at 12 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 19 knots with a range of up to 4,600 nautical miles from her 81,300 litre fuel tanks at 14 knots.

Mike Lynch, Tech Mogul Acquitted of Fraud, Dies at 59

The British entrepreneur was found not guilty of fraud charges in the sale of his company to Hewlett-Packard. He was celebrating his acquittal when his yacht sank off the coast of Sicily.

Two men walking in suits, wearing ties, with trees behind them on a street.

By Michael J. de la Merced

Michael de la Merced reported on Mike Lynch’s career and legal battles over the course of 13 years across two continents.

Mike Lynch , a British software mogul who was once celebrated as a top technology leader — only to spend more than a decade defending himself against accusations that he orchestrated one of the biggest frauds in Silicon Valley history — died on Monday after his yacht sank off the coast of Sicily . He was 59.

An official in the Italian city of Palermo confirmed on Thursday that Mr. Lynch’s body had been recovered by divers.

Twelve guests and 10 crew members were onboard the yacht, the Bayesian, when it went down during a violent storm. Mr. Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, was rescued, along with nine crew members and five other passengers. Seven bodies have been recovered, including one thought to be that of Mr. Lynch’s daughter, Hannah Lynch.

Mr. Lynch’s death came two months after he was acquitted in federal court in San Francisco of criminal fraud charges, tied to the $11 billion sale of his company, Autonomy, to Hewlett-Packard in 2011. The takeover, widely regarded among investors as one of the worst deals in history , led HP to accuse Mr. Lynch of deception.

Prosecutors in the United States charged Mr. Lynch with more than a dozen counts of fraud and conspiracy related to the deal, with a potential sentence running to about two decades in prison.

On the day in 2023 that a British judge found him liable for civil fraud in the matter, the British government — despite numerous appeals by Mr. Lynch — approved his extradition to the United States. He was confined to a townhouse in San Francisco under 24-hour surveillance, on his own dime. During his house arrest, his mother, Dolores, and his brother, Richard, died.

The accusations sullied the reputation of Mr. Lynch, who was known at one point as Britain’s Bill Gates.

Michael Richard Lynch was born on June 16, 1965, to Michael and Dolores Lynch, working-class immigrants from Ireland, and grew up outside London. He attended private school on a scholarship and graduated from Cambridge before founding Autonomy in 1996. The company helped clients analyze unstructured information to unearth hidden insights about their businesses.

By 2011, Autonomy had become one of Britain’s most prominent technology companies, with its home base sometimes called “Silicon Fen” — a name derived from its location at the southern tip of the Fenland, a marshy area in eastern England.

Mr. Lynch became a celebrity in British tech circles. He was a member of the Royal Society, one of the country’s top scientific associations; an adviser to David Cameron, the prime minister at the time; and a member of the BBC’s board.

Autonomy drew the attention of HP, which had sought to transform its fortunes by buying a high-powered software company, and which eventually paid 60 percent over the British company’s market value. But investors and analysts opposed the deal, and HP wrote down the value of the transaction by $8.8 billion. HP fired the chief executive who led the deal and, soon after, Mr. Lynch himself.

Meg Whitman, the former eBay leader who took over HP, accused Mr. Lynch and his lieutenants of “serious accounting improprieties” that misled her company over the state of Autonomy’s business.

But Mr. Lynch — armed with the hundreds of millions that he collected from Autonomy’s sale — hired an army of lawyers to argue that HP had been aware of the company’s practices. His team also said that Mr. Lynch had largely delegated the company’s day-to-day financial operations.

Mr. Lynch’s trial began in San Francisco in March. It stretched out over three months and involved reams of often dense internal documents. After two days of deliberations, a jury found Mr. Lynch and Stephen Chamberlain, a former Autonomy vice president of finance who faced similar charges, not guilty on all counts. (Mr. Chamberlain was fatally struck by a car on Saturday while out for a run, his lawyer, Gary S. Lincenberg, said Monday in an emailed statement.)

After the verdict, Mr. Lynch said in a statement, “I am looking forward to returning to the U.K. and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field.” He later returned to his homes, in London and Suffolk.

While defending himself against the HP accusations, Mr. Lynch became a venture capitalist, founding Invoke Capital to invest in companies including the cybersecurity provider Darktrace.

More recently, he had begun to focus on artificial intelligence research, including ways the technology could help those with hearing difficulties.

His survivors include his wife and another daughter, Esme.

Kirsten Noyes contributed research.
