Welcome to mini land yachts and land yachting.

This website will hopefully provide you with lots of useful information about Minilandyachts; provide answers to some of your questions, and inspire you to have a go at sailing on land.

Introduction

Sandyachting / Landyachting / Landsailing / Dirtboating are all words used to describe the same activity, the sailing of wheeled craft on land.

In the UK we tend to use the term Sandyachting, because that's what we do... sail on sand.

The sport has a long history, mainly because - wherever there is a beach suitable for sandyachting - ie flat, hard and preferably dry sand - someone will have sailed something on it, and they will invariably have been inspired by tales of someone else who sailed something similar, a decade or two earlier.

If you are interested in the History of Sandyachting and it's development in Britain, there is a hardback book with that title, 210 pictures and 201 pages, written in 1990, with copies still available at £20 including postage to mainland UK, direct from the author [email protected] .

The first Minilandyacht was the Windskate, in 1975. It was an immediate success, but the landyachting community are a competitive group of people, in that they generally like to sail faster than their friends, and - as a sweeping generalisation - the bigger the yacht, the faster it will go, so the little Windskate was quickly stretched - for racing purposes - and became Class 5.

The current wave of enthusiasm for Minilandyachts started at The Americas Landsailing Cup event at Ivanpah, USA, in 2000, when Jean-Philippe Krischer of Seagull (France) launched the Ludic.

The Ludic inspired numerous copies - of which the Potty Minilandyacht was but one - and, as with the Windskate, the little Minis were then stretched - for racing purposes - until the Sport's International Governing Body (FISLY) introduced a new Class for the Minilandyachts in 2012, with a specification that said the footprint of all 3 wheels must fit with a rope 5.60m long. The Minilandyachts Class was subdivided in 2017 into Sport - Mini Class 5s - and Spirit, the stretched original little Minis. The Sport Minis seem to have died out; the Spirit Minis are evolving quickly, and the original little Minis have been left behind.

The little Minis are much smaller than the yachts that now race in the Minilandyachts Class - and accordingly are hopelessly uncompetitive - but the vast majority of folk who show interest in the concept of the Minilandyachts are not interested in racing... they simply want to enjoy sailing on their local beach, for the sheer fun of it. If that includes you, then you're in luck, because this website is aimed at you.

My husband and I are the new owners of a Jeanneau 53 that was listed by Ancasta Barcelona. Starting in April 2025, we plan to sail 7 months out of the year in The Mediterranean and work 5 months here in The Netherlands. We were looking for our next boat and had decided on a three-cabin flybridge. Ancasta Chichester was advertising a 1999 Princess 460 which looked like it could fit the bill, so we made an appointment to view. After several months of looking and two failed surveys, I have just completed the purchase of my first boat, a Jeanneau Merry Fisher 795. As a newcomer to boating I have to admit my first impression of boat brokers was pretty poor (compared to other industries I deal with) - descriptions were definitely on the optimistic side, boats were untidy, dirty and generally poorly presented. No excuses, just very poor sales and I would be careful who to list my boat with in the future. Then I came across Ancasta (Leo Walters) who shone bright like a beacon. The description of the boat was accurate, minor faults highlighted and extra pictures provided on request. Communications with Ancasta have been excellent, the boat was very well presented for inspection and after sales Ancasta remained interested to ensure my experience was positive. I wouldn't hesitate going to Ancasta for another purchase and if you are thinking of selling a boat, consider using Ancasta, you will get better service and value for money than many other brokers out there. She was coppercoated in early 2021. Internally she is in nice condition, with good upholstery and Mikuni blown air heating. In the present ownership for 14 years, she is for sale now only because of a bereavement. £69,000 41' 0". to the present owner in 2016, and she is now back on the market. She has had the original 48 hp engine replaced with a 65 hp, and she has a bowthruster and an Aries windvane. In the present ownership she has had new electronics and standing rigging, also expensive renewal of the teak toerails and rubbing strakes. Unusually for a Rival 41, this is a remarkably lightly used yacht, that has never done major mileages. Afloat in S. Wales, though she will be coming to Cornwall later this summer. Moody 31 Mk II £26,000. from 1989 at £26,000 has excellent accommodation including a good-sized aft double cabin. This is one of the later-built Mk IIs, which have a sugarscoop stern. The hull is epoxied, and she has a good cruising inventory including heating and updated instruments. The owners have now bought a larger yacht. Ashore in Hampshire. Beneteau First 285 £19,750, 28' 9". is a moderately fast boat for her size, whilst retaining a comfortable cruising interior with 6' 3" headroom in the saloon. This 1988 example is the shallow winged keel version and unusually for a yacht of under 30 feet has wheel steering. For sale now as the owner want to buy a larger yacht. Yarmouth 23 gaff cutter £24,000, 26' 2". at £24,000 is a GRP gaff cutter and was built as a demonstration boat for the builders. She was exhibited at the 2012 and 2013 Southampton Boat Shows. She has a good inventory including a full cockpit tent, radar and autopilot, and the hull had a full osmosis treatment in 2017/18. Ashore in Hampshire, and . Southerly 100 £36,000, 32' 10". at £36,000 is a Dick Carter design, one of the few really shallow draught modern yachts available. She has a pilot house with interior steering, and a cast iron ballast plate protecting the keel and bottom when grounding. We sold this yacht to the present owner 10 years ago, and since then he has very comprehensively upgraded and equipped her. She is for sale now only for the owner's health reasons. Ashore in Hampshire. £125,000 37' 3". at £125,000 is a really high quality yacht offering an excellent balance of sailing performance, seakeeping and comfortable and beautifully finished accommodation. She has a fixed windscreen aided by clear screens to the "targa" arch giving plenty of protection to the cockpit, with a full cover extension for use in harbour. This yacht feels bigger than her 36 ft nominal length, both on deck and down below. Afloat in Hampshire. Beneteau Oceanis Clipper 323 £52,500. at £52,500 is a really well looked after and updated example of these popular family cruisers. She has excellent recent sails, and an inventory that includes good electronics, cabin heating and a full cockpit "camper" cover. The interior is in immaculate condition, and the dark blue hull also looks very good indeed. This yacht is the deep keel "Clipper" version with blue hull. Wauquiez Pretorien 35 from Wauquiez. This yacht is a quality fast cruiser, with an interior in extremely good condition. In the last five years she has had a bowthruster fitted, all new batteries, a Darglow feathering prop fitted, new standing rigging and rod kicker, and a new laminate genoa, plus other work. Ashore in Devon. Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 36i £69,950, 35' 11", shallow fin. is the preferred "owners" version. This is a shallow fin keel yacht with a very good inventory including excellent sails and a full cockpit "camper " cover. The hull has just had the old antifouling gritblasted off, and is ready for the new owner's preference of Coppercoat or antifouling. Ashore in Hampshire. Hunter Legend 356 £59,500, 35' 6". at £59,500 is an unusual yacht in that she is one of the few genuinely modern twin-keeled family cruisers around. Built by the US based Luhrs Marine in their UK Dorset factory in 2003, she offers a remarkably spacious interior and good sailing performance. Afloat in Hampshire. Hunter Legend 340 £47,000, 33' 6". with the shallow wing keel option at £47,000. Like most American boats this yacht has a spacious interior with good headroom and a large aft cabin double berth. She has a backstayless Bergstrom rig with a large in-mast furling mainsail sheeted to a cockpit arch and a relatively small headsail keeping sheet loads light. Afloat on the Isle of Wight. £49,000 34' 5". with the very useful option of twin bilge keels. The stand-out feature of these models is a very spacious aft cabin with double berth plus sitting space. This yacht has quite recently been re-engined with a 42 hp Sole diesel, more powerful than the original 35 hp Thornycroft. She has a good inventory including recent standing rigging and furling gear. Afloat in Hampshire. Hunter Channel 31 £51,500. was the 2003 Boat Show exhibit, and has been in the same ownership from new. She is in extremely good condition, and though quite extensively cruised by the family, has clearly been very well maintained. The hull is coppercoated and she has a Gori feathering prop. She has a good cruising inventory and Eberspacher heating, along with recent standing rigging. Dufour 36 Classic £56,000, 36' 1". at £56,000 is a very nicely fitted out modern cruising yacht. This yacht is the three cabin version with the shallow fin keel and in-mast reefing. She appears lightly used and well maintained, and the hull was Coppercoated in 2017. Afloat in Hampshire. Nauticat 37 £185,000, 36' 11". from 2002 at £185,000 is one of their later models designed for better sailing performance, whilst retaining a beautifully crafted teak interior with a spacious deck saloon. She has an excellent inventory including electric winches and a comprehensive suite of newish Raymarine electronics. Afloat in Cumbria. Wauquiez Centurion 40 £75,000, 39' 7". at £75,000 is a fast, elegant and highly seaworthy cruiser designed by Rob Humphreys and Ed Dubois, built by the quality French manufacturer Henri Wauquiez. Although she has seven berths, she is ideal for two couples, as she has separate heads by the fore and aft cabins. This 1988 example has the optional shallow draught lead bulb keel and an excellent inventory including a silenced diesel genset. Last year, Adam Dunlop and his wife Lisa sold their home in Twickenham and bought a houseboat, named Orca , moored on the River Thames. “The perfect house and this boat turned up at the same time and we went for the boat,” says Dunlop, 59, a freelance video editor. Orca measures 26 metres, has a top floor which is half deck and half glass box, with floor-to-ceiling windows all the way round. There’s also a kitchen/living room and three bedrooms downstairs. Unlike many houseboats, Orca doesn’t have an engine, so can’t go anywhere, but one of her big selling points was that she came with a share of a private mooring. “You can buy some lovely boats at wonderful prices but, if you don’t have a mooring, you’ve got nothing. The mooring is everything on the Thames,” says Dunlop. Most moorings – essentially a spot where you can leave your boat – involve paying a fee to someone else, and that fee can be as much as a large mortgage every month . “It varies depending on the location and the length of the vessel. The longer the vessel, the more it will incur in mooring fees. However, I would say that the average is around £10,000 a year,” says Nigel Day, co-founder and director of RiverHomes. “Of the approximately 1,200 moorings in London – which are usually classed as either permanent or leisure – only about 100 or so boat owners own their mooring.” Dunlop says: “On our marina, there are seven boats – five own a share – and it works like a share of freehold.” He paid about £775,000 for his houseboat and its mooring, funded by selling his home for £750,000. If the couple had bought the home they had their eye on instead, it would have been cheaper, at about £625,000. The mooring includes a small, shared garden, mooring entrance, parking space and a room in a lock-up. “Private moorings are very rare to find and are a much bigger upfront cost, but the outlay is then smaller,” he explains. The boats on the private mooring pay into a sink fund which covers insurance and maintenance costs. This works out at just under £200 a month but, if there’s any extra maintenance to be done, it’s more. The couple also pay the Port of London Authority, which looks after the Thames, around £135 a month, a figure that varies depending on your boat. While these are extra costs that don’t come with a traditional home, there are some financial advantages to houseboat life. The boat itself is stamp duty-exempt and there was just a small amount of stamp duty to pay for the land that comes with the mooring. Houseboats also generally attract a lower rate of council tax . Water and electricity work in a similar way to if you live on land, although Orca has an air source heat pump that makes the latter cheaper. The pros aren’t all monetary, though. “I have to pinch myself because it’s so peaceful and beautiful,” says Dunlop. “When the tide is low, you can sit out and watch for birds, sit with a cup of coffee and lose yourself in it, but we’re closer to town than we could afford if we lived in a house. It’s also a great place to entertain. We are by a walk and people drop in, we have lovely parties and great summer nights.” “Living by the river feels like being in the country but you’re right in the middle of London. We back on to the high street in Brentford but, because there’s an island [Brentford Ait] behind us, we’re on the quiet side so there aren’t pleasure boats going past. It’s very private,” he says. The couple have three boys, all in their twenties, one of whom is temporarily at home. “They like being here. We have a kayak and a motorboat that we take out. It’s got everything; there’s a nature reserve in front of me, which no one is allowed to go on, and it’s our own bit of private countryside.” There’s also a great sense of community in the marina, which Dunlop says people will either take to or not. “You need to be prepared to muck in and help out. You do talk to your neighbours and there’s a degree of communal living.” In terms of downsides, maintenance is the main one. “There are little things that you need to do and budget for, for example, looking after the exterior wood. Every 10 years, you also have to get all of the boat checked out. Boats are living items, so, after an amount of time, you need to add to them or repair them,” says Dunlop. Workers could get £250k pension pot for free under proposed retirement saving rule “Depending on the type of boat, it must be put in dry dock for its hull to be scraped or pressure-blasted and for the hull to be surveyed,” says Day. “Most boat owners take this opportunity to also blacken the hull and replace any anodes. Many go ahead and paint the rest of the exterior at this time, too. Costs vary between boatyards, but houseboat owners need to budget between £7,000 to £10,000.” The weather is another factor to be aware of and Dunlop recommends doing a houseboat swap before committing to living on a boat all year round. The couple occasionally let Orca on AirBnB so people who want to live on the river can give it a go. “It’s a good idea if you want to try it out. Be aware that, if you do it in summer, you need to be able to do it in winter, too.” Other disadvantages are the lack of fibre Wi-Fi and the phone signal. “Because the Thames is tidal, the phone signal is better at some times than others. At low tide, it’s not very good,” he says. The Dunlops were able to finance their purchase through the sale of their Twickenham home but, if you need to get a mortgage, buying a boat can be difficult. “They are almost always bought with cash. Marine finance is possible (sometimes called marine mortgages), but the term is short, the deposit is high and so is the interest rate,” says Day. “Of the very small number who opt for marine finance, 10 per cent interest or more is typical.” Dunlop at least, has no regrets: “A certain sort of person lives on a boat, it’s self-selecting. You need to have a certain outlook and a touch of romance in your soul.
