Superyachts Allegedly Close Mediterranean Beaches After Their Dumped Waste Washes Ashore [Update]

Multi-million-dollar superyachts have been accused of dumping waste off the coast of france, prompting a local mayor to call for a ban on massive yachts.

Superyachts are causing a real ruckus in the Mediterranean these days. After a yacht commissioned by Apple founder Steve Jobs crashed into another ship last week, a town on the Mediterranean coast has now had to shut beaches as waste from multi-million-dollar yachts washes up on shore.

Waste dumped from multi-million-dollar yachts anchored off the coast of France has been blamed for the closure of beaches to protect the welfare of residents, reports local news outlet ActuNice . Authorities in Nice shut certain coastal resorts on August 11 as waste including oil slicks washed up on shore. The site claims the pollution could have come from the multi-million-dollar CC Summer superyacht, which was anchored off the French coast earlier in August.

When the waste began washing up on shore, local authorities closed beaches and had to call for support from the fire services to clear up oil slicks that were thought to be cause by superyachts .

A second yacht, which has not been identified just yet, has been blamed for another closure of beaches along the Nice coast on August 2. Now, the town’s mayor has had it with billionaires leaving the planet in a mess for the rest of us to clean up and is calling for a ban on massive yachts mooring off the coast, according to a report from AutoEvolution :

In a recent announcement posted to social media, the city announces that a legal complaint has been filed with the competent authorities. The hope is that there will be some way to block this from ever happening again, Alain Lucas, the Mayor’s chief of staff, says for a local publication. The beaches are public and open to anyone, whether local or a tourist, and this could help keep them that way. “Enough is enough, we have to react,” Lucas says. He adds that firefighters also sounded the alarm on the presence of the oil slick near the coast.

The environmental impact of sea travel has been in the news a lot in recent years. Gargantuan cruise ships are an easy target for environmental campaigners as millions of tons of gray water are pumped into our oceans by cruise liners every year.

Smaller private yachts are much harder to monitor , however. Because of this, campaigners have argued that superyachts mean “rich are being held by different standards than the rest of the world,” reports AutoEvolution.

CHELSEA ace Ian Maatsen had to dump his glitzy summer holidays to compete in Euro 2024 for the Netherlands.

Maatsen, 22, spent the season on loan at Borussia Dortmund where he shone bright as he helped the Bundesliga giants reach the Champions League final where they lost 2-0 to Real Madrid .

However, the full-back was initially left out of Ronald Koeman's squad for the European championship in Germany, much to the surprise of many.

Thus, the Dutchman decided to spend his summer holidays in Greece with his girlfriend where he would regroup while enjoying some sunshine.

The defender sailed for Mykonos and shared some snaps of his luxurious holiday on social media aboard his £564,000 yacht.

Maatsen and his girlfriend looked set for a month-long vacation in the Med while island hopping on a Hermes Yacht.

However, the left-back finally got the call from the Dutch national team and immediately swapped the sunny Greek weather for Germany's rainy and cloudy climate.

Koeman has been dealt a couple of devastating injury blows with both Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong and Atalanta ace Teun Koopmeiners ruled out of the tournament.

Maatsen could now play a major role in the tournament following an impressive campaign that saw him register a total of 38 appearances for Dortmund.

The wideman also made the Champions League's Team of the Season - this all comes after another successful loan stint at Burnley whom he helped earn Premier League promotion last year.

However, it doesn't seem certain that Maatsen will be returning to Chelsea this summer as he prefers a permanent move to Dortmund , just like Manchester United ace Jadon Sancho.

The startup behind the green hydrogen venture is DRIFT Energy. Oddball as it sounds, the basic pieces of the puzzle are in place. Green hydrogen is a new but rapidly maturing industry, the idea being to jolt hydrogen loose from water in an electrolysis system instead of extracting it from natural gas or coal. Hydrogen can be burned in a internal combustion engine or deployed to power zero emission fuel cells , which are already making an appearance in the high tech world of yacht racing.

Electrolysis systems are scalable and transportable, so it’s not much of a stretch to see them installed on a ship. DRIFT plans to run its electrolysis systems on electricity generated by underwater hydrogenerators. Turbines of this sort are in use today to provide on-board electricity for yachts and other vessels rather than relying on diesel generators.

Water is the final piece of the puzzle, and water is all around a sailing ship. Conventional electrolysis systems rely on purified water, but water purification systems are commonplace on board ships at sea. In addition, researchers are working on new electrolysis systems that can produce green hydrogen from seawater without the expense of pretreatment (see more clean H2 background here ).

£4.65 Million To Produce Green Hydrogen At Sea

Some leading investors have seen enough to convince them that DRIFT’s seagoing green hydrogen plan has legs. Last week the company announced a £4.65 million round of seed funding spearheaded by the UK firm Octopus Ventures , a branch of the firm Octopus Investments.

Octopus Ventures describes itself as “one of the largest and most active venture capital investors in Europe.” Healthcare is a main focus of Octopus Ventures and sustainability is also a leading concern. The firm is on the prowl for change makers. “The entrepreneurs we back are reimagining how whole industries behave,” Octopus explains.

“By 2030 we aim to have invested £10 billion in the industries that are bringing about positive change,” they add.

Also supporting the seed round is Blue Ocean Accelerator . The firm has developed ocean-focused pre-seed and seed impact startup support hubs in the Bahamas. It is also developing a footprint here in the US through Miami-Dade County in Florida, the Port of San Diego, and the AltaSea innovation campus at the Port of Los Angles in California, which is the site of a wave energy pilot test .

“Our offer is deliberately designed to dramatically increase the odds of success for companies at the earliest of stages,” Blue Ocean explains. “We provide a $150,000 investment alongside a four month expert support program and access to a global network of investors, corporate partners, technologists, as well as public and private markets.”

DRIFT also notes that it has received funding from Innovate UK. The company anticipates that the grant will help streamline the design process of its initial ship, which it is calling “MVY.” Short for Most Valuable Ship, the name refers to the value of producing green hydrogen with renewable energy from the sea.

Green Hydrogen At Sea: From Drawing Board To Delivery

It won’t be long before we find out how all the pieces fit together. DRIFT anticipates that it will lay its first keel sometime next year. The company’s website is a bit thin on detail but it does indicate that the electrolyser will be a megawatt-scale system capable of producing green hydrogen at the gigawatt scale.

The company is also depending on an AI-enabled routing system to take optimal advantage of wind and weather conditions while at sea, timing the return trip to port with its hydrogen storage tanks topped off.

Going by the artist renderings, the ship is a catamaran powered by four hard sails. DRIFT describes it as a “shadow ship.” That can mean many things, but in this context the reference is to the specialized vessels that provide support services to large yachts. In theory, an MVY could follow a superyacht around the world, plying it with green hydrogen any time, any place. “DRIFT Energy MVY yachts are available as bespoke shadow vessels, enabling a bold owner to achieve true net zero and uniquely become fuel independent,” the company emphasizes.

The Marine Energy Connection

As for whether or not the MVY can become commercially viable, that remains to be seen. In the meantime, DRIFT and its “Oceans of Energy” concept present an interesting collaboration between wind energy, marine energy, and green hydrogen production.

Marine energy is another new industry on the verge of coming into widespread use. It refers specifically to devices that harvest energy from the motion of waves, tides, and currents on oceans and inland waters. Most of these devices are tethered to the seabed or some other fixed point, but there is one startup, called Magallenes Renovables, that deploys its tidal turbines from a vessel that resembles a cargo ship (see more marine energy background here ).

As for the green hydrogen industry, that has had its ups and downs. On the downside, the global mining firm Fortescue is representative of green hydrogen stakeholders who entered the market with ambitious plans in recent years, only to scale back in recent months.

Despite the challenges, new green hydrogen hot spots keep emerging. Ukraine, for example, anticipates that its vast renewable energy resources will help support government policies in Europe that support fuel cell vehicles and other hydrogen-centric systems.

Here in the US, the Biden administration is forging ahead with the $7 billion Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub program, which draws on water electrolysis along with other hydrogen supply chains including biomass and fossil fuels.

Keep an eye on Texas. Federal officials have tried and failed to attract offshore wind stakeholders to the Texas portion of the Gulf of Mexico coastline, but last month an unsolicited bidder popped up with a proposal to develop a designated offshore wind energy lease area off the coast of Corpus Christi. Hydrogen stakeholders at the Port of Corpus Christi did not make the cut for Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs funding, but the availability of offshore wind energy could nevertheless help spark a green hydrogen industry at the busy seaport.

Search Resumes for Missing Passengers of Yacht That Sank Off Sicily

Divers have been searching the hull of the Bayesian for passengers including the British entrepreneur Mike Lynch. Witnesses said it was hit by a waterspout during a sudden storm.

Deep-sea divers with Italy’s firefighter corps resumed their search on Tuesday morning for six passengers — including a British software mogul and his daughter — who are missing after a yacht sank off the coast of Sicily the previous day.

There were 22 people on board the British-flagged Bayesian, a 180-foot sailing yacht, which was anchored offshore near the port of Porticello when it was hit by what eyewitnesses described as a waterspout, a small tornado on water, during a sudden and very violent storm.

Fifteen people managed to find safety on a raft and were rescued by the captain of a nearby sailing cruise ship.

The body of the ship’s cook was recovered on Monday, but several people are still unaccounted for, according to to Salvatore Cocina, an official with Sicily’s civil protection agency: Mike Lynch, a British technology entrepreneur, and his daughter Hannah; Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife; and Christopher J. Morvillo, a lawyer at Clifford Chance, and his wife.

Prosecutors in the city of Termini Imerese, just east of where the yacht went down, have been charged with opening a formal investigation into the sinking and determining what led to it.

The search for the missing passengers began on Monday but was suspended late at night. “Access limited to the bridge deck, with difficulty due to the presence of furnishings obstructing passage,” the firefighters wrote on social media on Monday.

The ship was lying on its right side, at a depth of about 165 feet, meaning that divers, working in pairs, could enter it only for about 12 minutes at a time, said Luca Cari, the spokesman for Italy’s national firefighter corps.

“Obviously everything fell and the space is very tight,” Mr. Cari said. The divers were having to remove obstacles, like furnishings and electrical wiring, that were “completely blocking passages.”

“It’s a very complicated operation, very difficult,” he said.

‘God, country and prosperity’: How a finance guru allegedly stole $1 million a day in a real-estate Ponzi scheme

T odd Burkhalter’s pitch for a real-estate lending program was so convincing that regulators say he brought in as much as $1 million a day from investors hoping to strike it rich.

Promising returns of 10% every three months, the Securities and Exchange Commission said Burkhalter and his program, Drive Planning, attracted $372 million from 2,000 investors across the U.S. and abroad in just four years.

But investigators say it was all a Ponzi scheme, and that profits were being paid only out of money brought in from new investors. Much of it was also used to finance Burkhalter’s lavish lifestyle, for which he spent millions of dollars on a yacht, vacation homes and private jets, according to a civil complaint filed by the SEC in federal court in Atlanta.

“Drive Planning and Burkhalter gained the trust of everyday people and encouraged them to invest in this scheme by promising exorbitant returns,” said Nekia Hackworth Jones, director of the SEC’s Atlanta office. “But the defendants’ business was nothing more than a classic Ponzi scheme.”

In a statement, Burkhalter’s lawyers said their client had been cooperating with the SEC, but denied the allegations contained in its complaint.

”Mr. Burkhalter looks forward to quickly resolving this matter,” the statement added. 

‘Transform your financial future ‘

Regulators say Burkhalter founded Drive Planning in Alpharetta, Ga., in 2015 — offering a mix of tax strategies and private investment opportunities, mostly around real estate, which he promised could “transform your financial future” and allow investors to “keep more, make more and live more.”

In 2020, he authored a book called “Bulletproof Your Finances: Confidence in Creating Financial Security,” in which he billed himself as an entrepreneur and financial strategist who “has helped families and businesses design the lives and businesses they’ve always desired.” 

That same year, according to the SEC, Burkhalter launched an investment vehicle that claimed it would pool investor money to offer bridge loans to real-estate developers working on projects.

Burkhalter — who is referred to in court documents by his full name, Russell Todd Burkhalter — promised that investors could expect a 10% return on their money every three months. The minimum investment was $20,000.

The scheme quickly took off, the SEC said. The program — which was dubbed REAL, for real-estate acceleration loans — took in $8.8 million in 2021, $63.2 million in 2022, $163.1 million in 2023 and $100.3 million in 2024, before being shut down in May.

“As of early May 2024, the scheme was receiving applications for over a million dollars every day, driven by an organization of more than 100 sales agents,” the SEC wrote in court filings.

But according to the SEC’s complaint, the 52-year-old Burkhalter never actually used the money for any kind of lending program as he had promised. He simply used newly invested money to pay back earlier investors — the classic mechanism of a Ponzi scheme. 

Of the $372 million investigators say Burkhalter took in, he was able to pay back $154.9 million including the promised returns. Regulators say he didn’t stop there, however, using tens of millions of dollars to finance his own lifestyle.

The SEC said that in 2023, Burkhalter used $3.1 million to purchase a yacht for himself that he named the “Live More.” He also used $2 million to buy a luxury condo in the Mexican resort town of Cabo San Lucas.

Additionally, he diverted more than $22 million to purchase a 250-acre cattle ranch in Mineral Bluff, Ga., on which he erected a large barn that could be rented out for weddings and other events. The property was described on its website as embodying “the American ideas of God, country and prosperity.”

Burkhalter also spent more than $4 million on private-jet travel and hundreds of thousands of dollars on luxury cars and holidays, according to the SEC. He also invested several million dollars in cryptocurrencies for himself, the agency’s complaint said.

When Burkhalter finalized his divorce from his wife in 2023, the SEC said he used investor money to pay her what he had agreed to in their settlement.

He also paid around $65 million in commissions to his sales agents, the SEC noted.

Shutting it down

The SEC first informed Burkhalter that he was under investigation in April, according to court filings. 

By June, the agency had ordered Burkhalter to shut down Drive Planning and cease taking any more investments. He agreed, but a few weeks later paid out another round of commissions to his sales agents using ill-gotten money, the SEC said.

Subpoenas for financial records revealed that the real-estate investment program used virtually no accounting software to manage the money coming in and out, instead relying on a basic spreadsheet, according to court filings.

In a statement, the SEC said a receiver had been appointed to take over and attempt to unwind Drive Planning, and that Burkhalter was ordered to surrender his passport.

The SEC complaint named Burkhalter’s ex-wife and several other companies and properties owned by Burkhalter as relief defendants — arguing that they had benefited from money misappropriated in the scheme that would need to be clawed back.
