Grand Banks 62 first look: new yacht set to launch in 2025

  • Top stories

The Grand Banks 62 is an evolution of a previous design and should be making it's worldwide debut at the 2025 Palm Beach show

Grand Banks has released some exterior renderings of its new Grand Banks 62. An evolution of the current Grand Banks 60 , rather than all-new model, the Grand Banks 62 will be available with either an open flybridge (with or without a hardtop) or a fully enclosed Skylounge.

While the GB62’s three-cabin layout remains broadly the same as the GB60’s, the extra couple of feet adds valuable space amidships. For instance, the aft galley is now significantly larger than before and the previous amidships single cabin becomes a slim double with its own ensuite heads.

This aside, the lower deck remains much the same with an aft facing owners’ cabin up front, a transverse double to port and a separate shower-room/day-head and laundry area to starboard.

The standard engines will be twin Volvo D13-900s on straight shafts, giving a nominal top speed of 31 knots and a recommended fast cruise of 22 knots. These can be uprated to D13-1000s or swapped for 900hp IPS1200s. With the latter installation, the top speed pushes up to around 35 knots with a fast cruise in the high 20s. At 10 knots the un-refuelled range should be well over 2,000nm, regardless of engine choice.

Both models share the same revered V-Warp planing hull. The first GB62 off the line is scheduled to make its debut at the 2025 Palm Beach show. US prices begin at $4.6m, but expect to pay around £3.7 million excluding VAT for a fully specified one on this side of the Atlantic, according to GB Marine Group’s UK contact Colin Watts. The next available delivery slots will be from late 2025 to early 2026.

As well as the Grand Banks range, the Malaysia-based boatbuilder also makes models under the Eastbay and Palm Beach brands.

Grand Banks

Offering three lines of composite luxury yachts featuring traditional nautical styling and offshore capability, Grand Banks Yachts is headquartered in the U.S. Pacific Northwest.

Grand Banks’ genesis was with a company called American Marine, founded in 1956 by Robert J. Newton and his sons, John and Whit, in Hong Kong. American Marine built custom luxury yachts designed by noted naval architects.

In 1962, the Newtons commissioned naval architect Kenneth Smith to design an 11-metre, diesel-powered cruising motor boat with workboat lines called Spray. This yacht, which formed the prototype for the classic Grand Banks cruiser, was so successful that starting in 1963, the family focused on building the Grand Banks line. At first, they built their boats of wood in Hong Kong, then a decade later, began composite production in a new shipyard in Singapore. Now known as the Grand Banks Heritage Series, these models range from 13 to 16.45 metres.

In 1993, Grand Banks launched its East Bay Series of luxury yachts based on the design of a traditional Maine lobster boat. Today, the East Bay series ranges from 13.7 to 16.8 metres. Then, in 2001, Grand Banks introduced its Aleutian Series of Raised Pilothouse motor yachts in order to satisfy the demand from owners of smaller Grand Banks yachts ready to move up in size. The Aleutian luxury yachts range from 16 to 23 metres.

Notable Yacht

The Aleutian 76 RP is Grand Banks’ flagship Raised Pilothouse luxury yacht. Designed with traditional nautical exterior lines and a semi-displacement hull, this versatile motor yacht is capable of cruising at speeds of up to 30 knots or voyaging at a range of nearly 2,000 kilometres. Its layout includes a flybridge and spacious bridge deck up to four staterooms.

Specialisations

Grand Banks offers high quality new luxury yachts built with advanced composite construction. The shipyard is known for its fine woodworking and craftsmanship, and its attention to detail.

Grand Banks Yachts is a luxury yacht manufacturer based in Stuart, Florida . The company was founded by Robert J. Newton and his sons in 1956 as American Marine, a custom boat manufacturer that built sailboats and motor yachts. [1] However, the company's inception is often recognised as 1963, when they produced their first signature powerboat model, which came to be known as Grand Banks. [1]

Throughout the companies history, Grand Banks have been recognised for their construction of luxury motorboats that have stylistic features of a recreational trawler created from a combination of wood and fibreglass . The company operates on a global scale and caters to Australia , Asia , North America and Europe ; with office locations in each continent. [2]

The manufacturing facilities have relocated since the brands inception from Junk Bay , Hong Kong to facilities in Pasir Gudang in Malaysia and Singapore . [3] Manufacturing has hence ceased at the Singapore factory and all motor yachts are produced by the 747 employees at the Malaysian factory. [4]

History [ edit ]

In 1952 Robert J. Newton began building custom built yachts and powerboats in the parking lot of a bottling plant that he owned in To Kwa Wan . [1] The company was originally known as American Marine, Ltd and was a small business consisting solely of Robert J Newton and his sons. They catered to the requests of local marine architects and created prototype sail boats and motor yachts for 11 years. [1]

grand banks yachts wikipedia

However, the company's inception is recognised as 1963; the date in which the business shifted from making custom built motor yachts to the production of a line of boats. [5] It was at this stage the Grand Banks business name was established.

Grand Bank's first prototype for their line of models was a 36-foot diesel-powered cruising boat named spray. [5] It was a modern yacht with trawler style characteristics. The features which defined it as a “trawler style” were the symmetrical saloon shape, small workboat windows and a spacious saloon space. The model was drastically different to yachts being produced at the time.

1965 was the first model year for Grand Banks, in which they transitioned away from single models to creating a series of models. The company built a range of models including the Grand Banks 32, 36 and 46 feet shapes.

The first fiberglass hulled vessels were built in 1974 at a new factory in Singapore. [5] The switch from wood to fibreglass was performed with a great degree of secrecy and the public and dealers were not informed until the new manufacturing procedures had begun. [1] Due to the abrupt nature of the switch and the lack of understanding of fibreglass hulls by the public at the time, Grand Banks received much negativity.

In 1975 the company changed control due to financial pressure and was passed to an investment group owned by Bob Livingston.

In 1990 the company floated on the Singapore market as Grand Banks Holding LTD . [1]

In 1994 the company released the Grand Banks 46 Europa model. [6]

In 1995 the Grand Banks opened the new facility in Pasir Gudang, Malaysia. [3]

In 1997 the company released the Grand Banks 49 classic model. [6]

On April 11, 2014 Grand Banks acquired a 100 percent stake in Palm Beach Motor Yachts for $8 million AUD and manufactures the yachts in its Malaysia facility. [7]

Construction [ edit ]

Grand Banks yachts are constructed at the manufacturing facility in Malaysia. The facility works independently and is vertically integrated , with the entire manufacturing process being completed in each location. The manufacturing process is completed in 5 stages; moulding , carpentry , interior module construction , production floor and sea testing. [3]

Moulding [ edit ]

The two moulds required to build the infrastructure of a Grand Banks are the hull and deck modules. Each has a two-piece mould with thick support structures in which the fibreglass is poured. After a setting period the new structure is then sanded, smoothed and trimmed to remove faults and to give a smooth surface finish. [3] Upon finishing this process, the hull and deck modules are moved to the production floor.

Carpentry [ edit ]

The carpentry stage produces the teak objects, furniture and decking. It is broken down into carpenter stations, each with specialised roles. [3] The specialised stations produce a single item, including: tables, window frames, benches, decking and railings. Upon being constructed, the object is then sanded, sealed and varnished in a separate station.

Interior module construction [ edit ]

The interior of each yacht is built in a series of individual modules which together form the structure of the vessel. [3] This method increases the speed of production; as multiple units can be built at one time. Interior modules include: furniture , stairs , and supporting structures. Upon the completion of each module they are moved to the production floor to be assembled.

Production floor [ edit ]

Each individual component is brought to the production floor for assembly . This is the largest area in the facility and is where majority of the employee's work. [3] Once the three above components are on the production floor the yachts are assembled. Firstly, the two mould modules are assembled and assessed for imperfections. Following that the machinery is placed and assembled; including the engine , inverter and tanks . Once the heavy machinery is in, the carpentry and interior modules are placed and fastened together. The final step is sanding and varnishing to ensure a smooth and consistent teak finish. [3]

Sea trials [ edit ]

Sea trials is the final stage before the yachts can be dispatched. All completed yachts must undergo sea trials to ensure they meet safety requirements and quality standards. [3] Each boat is tested for its safety and operating systems. Upon satisfying the tests and quality control the vessels are partly disassembled for shipping .

Current models [ edit ]

Grand Banks are currently manufacturing four yacht models. The four models they are offering are the: Eastbay 44, Grand Banks 60, Grand Banks 60 Sky Lounge and Grand Banks 54.

PRACTICAL PERFECTION

The GB54 is a perfect fusion of classic style and modern technology. Its elegant form is sculpted by over sixty years of experience in building luxurious, long-distance cruisers. Its class-leading performance and efficiency rest upon a hull that was inspired by the underwater geometry of ocean racing yachts. Add to this the ingenuity of its ergonomics and you’ll find the GB54 extraordinarily light and spacious yet easy to manage and handle with only one or two pairs of hands on-board.

GO FURTHER FOR LESS

The hydrodynamics of our proprietary V-Warp hull create a unique combination of speed, stability and fuel economy.

The warped, semi-displacement form is inspired by the design of ocean racing yachts and flares amidships to roll the seas away from the hull.

This feature maximizes buoyancy and lift while a transom deadrise of 8 degrees helps the 54 achieve class-leading speeds by reducing resistance to the water. There’s no more efficient yacht in its class.

INVISIBLE BEAUTY

Gorgeous as she is from any angle, the true beauty of the GB54 lies in the hidden virtues of her construction.

Virtually all parts of the vessel are vacuum infused in epoxy vinylester to reduce weight while adding strength and durability. The bulkheads and salon furniture are fused to the hull to increase rigidity as are the deck and superstructure which are formed in carbon fiber to enhance structural stability.

The result is a semi-monocoque construction that won’t shake or rattle even when the seas are rolling.

MAKING IT EASY TO TAKE IT EASY

How do we achieve a magical combination of thrills and relaxation? It comes down to control. The GB54 is a high-performance motor yacht that always lets you set the pace – cruise gently to your destination or open her up and cut through the seas with ease.

Either way, the systems and ergonomics of our design have evolved over the years to ensure that handling of the boat is remarkably simple, stress free and requires minimal assistance.
