According to Urban Dictionary , thot is a phrase used to describe “girls in schools that send out nudes and porn of themselves.” It is a phrase used to describe “women who pretend to be the type of valuable female commodity... until the man discovers that she’s just a cheap imitation of a ‘good girl’ who is good only for mindless sex.” It is a phrase used to describe “fast girls,” and it is also an acronym for “that ho over there.”

In short, thot is another way of calling a girl easy.

Thot is a relatively new phrase.  According to Pink News , “the term first appeared on Urban Dictionary in 2012, with some people using the term after hip-hop artist Chief Keef reportedly said ‘thot’ on the set of one of his music videos.”

However, the word has become increasingly popular over the years, both in person and in music, and most recently Uncle Murda wrote a song called "Thot," “which features lyrics that describe how the singer used to love a woman until he discovered she was a ‘thot.’”

God damn, I used to like you / That p*** was tight too / Can’t believe I almost wifed you / Found out you was a thot too / What you gotta be a thot for?

While thot can stand on its own, some people prefer the phrase “thot be gone,” which means “go away ho.” Others, however, prefer “thotties,” which is a term used to describe a group of “easy” girls or women.

Unlike other common words and acronyms, thot is not a positive phrase. In fact, it is almost always used in a negative and demeaning way. Rappers use it in a derogatory manner, hip-hop artists and other pop culture figures use it in an inflammatory manner, and the average person uses the phrase to be dismissive.

Women who are thots are subpar — i.e., Be careful if you get with that thot; she’s got a bad reputation. Stop playing; we all know you’re a thot. And did you see that thot’s pics? Gross.

So when is it okay to use thot? Well, in my opinion, never.

Thot is callous, cold, sexist, and cruel. But if you choose to use it, remember: words carry weight. They carry meaning . And thot? Well, it means to be mean — and nothing more.

What Does "Thot" Mean?

Shamir's new album Ratchet recently came out and one of the most popular lines it features off the song "Call It Off" is "just can't make a thot a wife." This, of course, which prompts the important question: What is a thot? As usual, let's turn to Urban Dictionary some answers. Warning: The topic we're about to delve into isn't a pleasant one; turn back now if you'd rather not go there (which would be completely understandable).

OK. Ready? Here we go.

According to Urban Dictionary's top definition, a " thot is a hoe ," with the plural being "thotties." Other definitions, however, reveal a little more about how the word itself came to be: "Thot" is actually an acronym that can either stand for "that hoe over there" or "thirsty hoe over there."

As you may have already guessed, the word is frequently used in an unpleasant and problematic way. Rappers and hip hop artists use it as a derogatory term for women to whom they intend to pay no mind and dismiss entirely. Why the dismissal? Because, as those who use the term see it, "they're just hoes," and their worth is apparently completely tied in with their sexuality and sexual prowess. This is presumably why Shamir says that you can't make a thot a wife — thots, by definition, aren't considered particularly desirable because they sleep around (AKA have autonomy over their bodies and sexuality), will inevitably cheat on you (because apparently a sexual woman is incapable of being faithful), and have no other qualities besides being hoes. Yeah. It's super messed up.

The word originates in hip hop and has been featured in various recent songs. Some of these include:

"T.H.O.T" by The Game

Derogatory lyrics include: "That’s yo hoe? I f**cked yo b**ch hold up / Yo face look mad as sh*t / she sucked my d*ck and you kissed her."

"Can't Trust Thots" by Wash

Derogatory lyrics include: The title and everything it entails.

"Thot Walk" by John Boy, Kayleb, and Yung Cyph

Derogatorily mimics how the rappers think thots walk, and yes, it's as stupid as it sounds.

Though the word "thot" isn't inherently gendered, it's used in a very gendered way, with the attacks being leveled almost exclusively at women. A Slate article also makes a point that not only is the word sexist, but also, it has serious race and class implications that target poor women of color, making it different from just "slut." Overall, it's an incredibly problematic word.

I would argue, however, that like any word used derogatorily or to oppress a group of people, "thot" is a word that can be reclaimed and redefined. At its root, a thot is someone who is sexually promiscuous generally used towards women of color. Therefore, it's totally valid for a woman of color to refer to herself as a thot if she takes pride in her sexual prowess and wants to turn the negativity behind the word to positivity.

So: When is it OK to use it? Don't call someone else a thot, because it's sexist, racist, and classist. But if you're reclaiming it for yourself because you're in the group targeted by the word, then more power to ya.

Just How Demure Are You?

A TikTok trend has breathed new life into a fusty word.

If you opened TikTok this week and felt that suddenly everyone was using the word “demure” out of nowhere, you’re not alone.

Your morning coffee with just a little half-and-half? Demure. The way you sit down gracefully on the subway? Very demure. The way you floss your teeth after lunch in the office bathroom before returning to your cubicle? Absolutely, totally demure.

Seemingly overnight, an adjective usually reserved for a reserved woman has become the semi-ironic word du jour on social media.

On Aug. 2, a TikTok creator who goes by the name Jools Lebron posted a video with tips about managing makeup and mustache sweat and being demure.

Later that day, she posted another video , which has been viewed four million times, offering tips on how to be demure at work. “Very demure, very mindful," she says, explaining her perfume, clothing and hairstyle choices for the workplace. Ms. Lebron has since posted dozens more such videos discussing how to be demure in all sorts of situations, like nail salons, hotels and drag shows.

Ms. Lebron, who did not respond to requests for comment, is one of several trans creators on TikTok whose playful use of “demure” in recent videos has helped the word catch on with other users.

“There has been so many demure divas who have come before me,” Ms. Lebron said in a video , naming two fellow content creators as well as Venus Xtravaganza, a trans performer who featured prominently in the influential documentary “ Paris Is Burning .”

On TikTok, the word has spread far beyond its original roots. Now, the viral term has become fodder for brands, like the restaurant chain Chili’s and the New York City Department of Sanitation, which posted on Instagram that the city’s new official garbage bins were … you know what .

Madison Malone Kircher Let’s start with the big question on everyone’s minds: What exactly does “demure” mean in this moment?

Callie Holtermann Every few weeks, a new word starts getting repeated ad nauseam online in ways that only sort of relate to its original definition. Last week, that word was “brat.” This week, it’s basically the exact opposite: “demure.”

Gina Cherelus Someone who is demure is typically reserved and modest, so it’s always fascinating to see how a word has strayed from its meaning. Now, people online are using it to describe their style of dress, hair or even their simple latte order.

Melissa Guerrero I’ve also seen people use the word to describe manners, their cleaning habits and setting boundaries with other people.

Gina Cherelus Someone who is mindful, perhaps even cutesy?

Madison Malone Kircher Right, Gina, there also seems to be a constellation of related words: “mindful,” “cutesy,” “respectful,” to name a few.

Callie Holtermann Demure is not bold and flashy. It’s tucking your hair behind your ear. It’s a Peter Pan collar. It’s nibbling on some raspberries!

Callie Holtermann I don’t think the people using this term online are actually pushing for people — women, especially — to be more restrained and deferential. I think it’s all kind of a bit.

Melissa Guerrero There’s a hint of sarcasm in demure. I don’t know if wholesome feels like that.

Callie Holtermann They’re saying it with a wink: I know that this is typically the affect we associate with femininity, and I’m going to subvert it a bit by applying it to my coffee order or my favorite Real Housewife.

Gina Cherelus I think what’s also happening is that people are tailoring it to themselves with additional phrases and words in an attempt to prove they are better at it then the next person. It’s slightly competitive. Like, You might wear your hair in big curls, but I wear a tight bun because I’m demure, not extra.

Madison Malone Kircher Patrick Ta, the makeup artist, invited Jools Lebron to a brand event in New York this week, which feels like a textbook example of how viral moments quickly become corporate these days.

Anthony Rotunno The word-of-the-week-to-brand-ambassador pipeline strikes again! When was the last time any of you used the word “demure” before this past week? It feels so old-timey.

Gina Cherelus Almost never, but TikTok reminded me that Emily Gilmore from the show “Gilmore Girls” once referred to Rory as such, so yes: old-timey.

Madison Malone Kircher Is Tim Walz demure? Don’t answer that. We’ve seen several recent trends — coquette , the rise of the trad wife — that emphasize the ultrafeminine. Is this related?

Callie Holtermann The way it’s being used now feels related to the great “girl”-ification of the internet last summer: girl dinner , hot girl walk . I think it’s being used in a way that’s broader than the actual definition. Some of this stuff isn’t actually shy or modest.

Madison Malone Kircher Exactly. Making videos for millions on the internet isn’t actually demure. And that’s the point.

Callie Holtermann It feels like a way of establishing one’s own parameters for femininity (and maybe even poking fun at the old ones). Trad wives might be demure in a literal sense, but the people using the word online now are going to stretch and reshape its definition into something that feels authentic — or at least fun and silly — to them.

Madison Malone Kircher Fun, silly and everywhere. I feel like my For You Page is entirely people making demure content at this point.
