First electric propulsion X-Yacht is powered by Oceanvolt

One of Denmark’s best known sailing yacht manufacturers has launched their first electric propulsion X-Yacht, a 49 foot, 12 ton X4⁹E equipped with two 10kW electric saildrives from Oceanvolt .

“I’m really happy to say that the time is right to present the first X-Yacht with electric propulsion,” said Kræn Nielsen, CEO of X-Yachts . ”A new range of electric powered sailboats is a natural step for us in order to support a greener future, a nice match with other initiatives, such as being the main sponsor of the Race For Oceans Foundation .”

This first electric propulsion X-Yacht has been built for John Haurum, who is looking forward to using it for ocean cruising, but also appreciates the high performance aspects of the X-Yachts brand, and is sailing the new X4⁹E, now named ‘ Flux ‘, in the Garmin Round Denmark Race. He also hopes to enter the ARC cross Atlantic rally for cruisers.

Electric propulsion X-Yacht: cruising and speed

Andras Ørbæk Olesen, Sales Manager of the electric propulson X-Yacht, was also excited. “When I first met John and he told me about his thoughts of having a new boat with electric propulsion, I instantly felt his interest and passion in this eco-friendly system. To John, it was way more than just a product and a new boat – it was a passion for a new future with sustainable energy combined with his passion for sailing.”

Twin motors with ServoProp regeneration

The X4⁹E is a specially adapted version of the existing X4⁹ and considerable development went into the new model. There was close cooperation not only between client and shipyard, but also between X-Yachts and Oceanvolt, engaged because of their long experience in electric motors for sailboats and leadership in regeneration technology. Their website has a page showing their technology is now standard equipment on dozens of monohulls, multihulls and motorboats.

The motors run on 48V, and are mounted on each side of the traditional engine compartment, below the aft cabin bunks. The design team reconfigured the former diesel compartment, which “still has the nice aluminum finish on all sides, but with the noise insulation excluded – it is not needed anymore.” 

The ServoProp designation of the motors (SD is SailDrive) indicates they are fitted with Oceanvolt’s award winning ServoProp variable pitch propellers, which work to maximize the capabilities of the Oceanvolt regenerative system.

For sailing boats regeneration (sometimes called hydroregeneration) is one of the major advantages of electrical propulsion over diesel. When driven by the electric motor, energy from the battery is consumed much like a combustion engine consumes diesel. But when sailing under wind power, the rotation of the propellers due to water movement is used to generate electricity and recharge the battery.

8 hours of sailing charges batteries

The X4⁹E can produce up to 3.5 kW when sailing at speeds over 8 knots. This means that sailing for about eight hours will charge the batteries from empty to full. John Morsing adds that “As a side note, this ‘full tank’ is 100% green and free of cost!”

To give some idea of what kind of range to expect from the electric propulsion X-Yacht, Oceanvolt has provided these use cases (assumption of conditions for all examples is no wind / no waves).

CASE 1: Full or almost full battery bank, need to travel for long distance under power.

• Generator delivers all power (11 kW) to the two ServoProps, i.e they are run at 5,5kW each.
• Boat can travel at 6.7 knots
• Fuel consumption of the generator will be 3.8 litres per hour: 1.7 NM per litre of fuel consumed
• X4⁹E can continue with this setup until diesel in tank is consumed

CASE 2: Need to recharge battery bank while under generator power.

• Power of ServoProps must be decreased to a level lower than 5,5kW each, e.g. to 4kW.
• Generator delivers 11kW:  8kW for the ServoProps, and 3kW for recharging battery.
• Boat speed will be reduced to 6 knots
• Fuel consumption remains 3.8 litres per hour.
• After 10-12 hours max. battery bank is fully recharged, X4⁹E can continue as in Case 1

CASE 3: 15 NM miles to destination. Battery bank 80% full, crew would like to travel as fast as possible to destination under engine.

• With both ServoProps working full power of 2 x 10 kW, boat will sail at 7.8 knots. It will therefore take approx. 2 hours to reach the destination.
• Battery bank is 80% full – not enough to supply the ServoProps all the way to the destination.
• Generator must be started.
• Generator will deliver 11kW to ServoProps, battery bank will deliver the remaining 9kW
• Boat will be brought to the destination under full power.

‘ Another great success ‘

The X4⁹E is also equipped with solar panels, which are largely used to provide electricity for the boat’s ‘hotel load’: lights, navigation systems, appliances, etc. For those who are not planning blue water cruising the boat is also available as an all-electric model without any diesel generation.

Uncompromised Comfort

Space is luxury, five star outdoor living, safe by design.

Who said that true sailing performance comes only with plain unfriendly interiors. The X-Yachts design superiority hides behind the vacuum infusion technology on the hull construction, the galvanized steel frame over the keel and the right weight distribution of all the fittings which let room -weight wise- to include all the necessary premium materials to create the feeling of a five star hotel, but this time on a board.

The 3 cabin layout,  with two generously sized WCs/showers on a 46ft yacht is delivering lots of space everywhere, making living on board a truly relaxing experience. Ideally this yacht will comfortably accommodate 6 adults but if wished can sleep another two persons in saloon area and another two children or agile adults at the aft removable sea berths (check Layout & Accommodation details below).

The well-proportioned saloon gives the yacht a spacious feel, but well positioned hand rails and good furniture placement ensure it is always safe and easy to move around no matter the heel angle.

Everything in the interior is a beautifully crafted in the known all time classic X-Yachts way.

The standard full teak bathing platform creates a perfect area for relaxing as well as easy access from the water or dinghy. In this way you can take full advantage of the swim stops or the overnight stays on one of the endless safe anchorages of the Greek archipelago.

The  cockpit space on board the X4⁶ is not only designed to be functional and safe while at sea but also creates a luxurious outdoor living space. The twin wheels and recessed mainsheet track ensuring that the cockpit area is spacious and uncluttered.

A deck shower is fitted as standard. The high back rests not only offer protection while at sea but also create a comfortable seating area on the fitted cockpit cushions

The X4⁶ incorporates 40yrs design experience of the Danish boat yard. A boat you feel sure to spend time on, even when the weather conditions are not ideal.

The vacuum infused epoxy, full sandwich hull saves important weight and it maximises strength and stiffness. All saved weight is used to increase the yachts’ stability enabling the crew to have a more relaxed time and to feel more safe and comfortable.

The galvanized steel frame is mounted to the inside of the hull and takes all the loads from the keel and mast. This keeps the yacht stiff, strong and safe. In the same aspect the lead bulb are encapsulated in a reinforced epoxy e-glass shell.

Sailing Performance, on Every Angle

Any boat can go well downwind with a decent sailplan and hull shape. The challenge for the Danish X-Yachts designers was how to achieve a big smile on the face of the skipper any time all directions of sailing are included in the route. And they did a pretty good job as you will realise from the first moments behind helm.

The x46 converts the Greek archipelago into a sailing arena waiting for you to explore and the Greek islands as your buoys. Easy you will consistently see two digit numbers in speed over ground when in broad reach with asymmetrical spinnaker and will be pointing incredibly high, with velocity-made-good unimaginable, compared to any other conventional yacht out there.

Flexible Sailplan, Easy to Handle

We have engineered the sailplan of all X4 6  to be a perfect match to the sailing characteristics of the hull, to the different uses for holidays or racing and to the local Greek conditions. So all boats are fitted with:

• Main sail, tri-radial design, with three reefs, handled by a single line reefing system
• 106% Jib, tri-radial design, sheeted to tracks, adjustable from cockpit.
• Stay sail, with inbuilt inner forestay (anti-torque luff) , for use when the wind picks up, very easy to set up or completely get it out of the way, even on the go when windy (optional)
• Asymmetrical spinnaker for light wind broad reaching, with a sleeve for easy dropping, even single handed (optional)
• Optionally a Code Zero, to get you going when close reaching in light wind conditions

Ultimate Sail Design

All X-Yachting tri-radial sails have been thoroughly engineered up to every small detail, in order to perfectly match the X-Yachts sailing philosophy and honour the true sailing performance of each boat separately. Countless hours of work have been dedicated locally in Greece, from our globally  recognised partners Quantum Sails and their talented sail designer and race winning sailor Pat Tahtatzis to design, test and execute this important challenge and the result is in one word: “Perfect!”

Accommodation

3 cabins / 2 wcs / sleeps 6 adults + 2 adults + 2 children.

The layout includes the master bow cabin with a double bed and an ensuite WC with shower, the aft starboard cabin with one more double bed and the aft port side cabin with split bed which can be converted (upon request during booking) to full size double bed. The aft head has an independent entry door from the saloon area so that it can be shared from both aft cabins.  So 6 adults can comfortably sleep without any compromise.

If the team is up for it, another two adults can sleep in the saloon area in the two sofas. Also in both aft cabins there are sea berths which we can install (as an option), on the sides over the main bed, where another two children or agile adults can sleep (one per sea berth). This feature is often used by couples with one child/teenager or so or young friends.

So in total there can sleep max 10 passengers on board which is also the max nominal capacity of the boat.

Spacious Comfort:

The cockpit of X-Power 33C is spacious with three pilot seats and eight sofa seats. The cockpit table is height-adjustable and in conjunction with its surrounding space it can be transformed into a sunbed near the bathing platform. The X-Power 33C has an optional T-Top, creating the perfect protection from both sun and wind along with the standard windscreen. A bimini and cockpit tent are optional.

The pantry is easy accessible aft of the pilot seats, it is practically designed and houses as standard a gas cooker and a 30L drawer fridge, with an optional second drawer possible.

Creating the interior of the X-Power 33C, the designer selected only the very best quality materials giving a luxurious first impression. The cabin cushions are produced in a durable upholstery, and will ensure a comfortable lying position and a good night's sleep. Furthermore, there are plenty of light sources in the cabin.

Below deck, there is a nicely appointed compartment with toilet and shower facilities, along with a mirror that doubles as a window when required.

The cockpit:

The control panel is carefully designed to be user-friendly and intuitive to allow the driver to focus on the right thing - enjoying the boat ride in comfort and safety. The navigation and operation system are operated via two integrated 16" screens from Simrad. With only a few operating items at the control console, the boat is easy to pilot for the driver in charge. The built-in control units fit seamlessly into the panel, and thanks to the illuminated display, intuitive guidance and large buttons, the panel is quick and easy to operate.

Facts about petestep:

In the production of X-Power 33C, we are using the patented Petestep® technology that results in a more comfortable and fuel-efficient boat ride. Quieter No more clatter in waves! Because Petestep® hulls don’t have any horizontal flat surfaces that smash the water under the hull, the biggest source of hull noise is removed. This makes Petestep® hulls create a lot less noise from waves, which significantly adds to the comfort of the ride. More stable Petestep® hulls increase stability, both at speed and at the dock. At zero speed, Petestep® hulls have a wider footprint that makes the boat less prone to heeling. When at speed, the deflectors stabilise the boat, once again contributing to a better ride. Leaner Petestep® hulls reduce resistance by removing friction and reducing energy waste. Up to 35% less energy is required to propel the boat forward, which could lead to significantly lower fuel consumption at comparable level of comfort. Softer Conventional spray rails with their flat surfaces are associated with hard landings. Petestep® deflectors, on the other hand, dampens landings and lowers slamming by up to 50%, resulting in unmatched ride comfort.

Books are misunderstood in our world today. Most people find them boring and that's why they don't read any books in their entire life. This is because they have not realized the great power they have. Here are five quotes that highlight the power of books:

Francis Bacon (1561–1626) :

"Reading maketh a full man; conference a ready man; and writing an exact man."

Bacon, an English philosopher and statesman, saw books as essential for personal and intellectual growth. He believed that reading enriches the mind and character, contributing to a person's completeness. Bacon argued that while reading expands knowledge, discussion prepares one to express and use this knowledge effectively. Writing, in turn, sharpens clarity of thought. His focus on these three elements highlights the important role of books in developing wisdom and enhancing intellectual abilities.

Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882) :

"A book is a delivery room for the birth of ideas."

Emerson, an American essayist and philosopher, saw books as fertile ground for new ideas and breakthroughs. He viewed them as catalysts for generating and sharing thoughts that can inspire and transform people and societies. Emerson’s view shows that books are not just stores of knowledge but active participants in the creative process, nurturing and producing new concepts and innovations.

Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900) :

"Without books, the development of civilization would be impossible."

Nietzsche, a German philosopher known for critiquing traditional values and exploring existential themes, recognized the vital role of books in the evolution of human culture and society. He understood that books are not just a way to preserve and share knowledge but also a key force behind cultural and intellectual progress. Nietzsche's recognition of the essential nature of books highlights their importance in the ongoing development and change of civilization.

Plato (c. 428/427–348/347 BCE) :

"Books give a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything."

The ancient Greek philosopher and Socrates' pupil Plato held great regard for the transformational potential of literature. He believed that books were essential to the development of human mind and creativity. Books arouse intellectual curiosity and impart knowledge, which in turn animates the mind and spirit. According to Plato's metaphorical language, books are essential for the growth of individual souls as well as the larger intellectual and philosophical landscape, enhancing our capacity for knowledge and creativity.

Cicero (106–43 BCE) :

"A room without books is like a body without a soul."

Cicero, a Roman orator, statesman, and philosopher, valued the role of books in human life. He believed that books are essential for the intellectual and moral strength of individuals and societies. Cicero compared a room without books to a soulless body, showing his belief that books add intellectual and spiritual richness to spaces. His view highlights that books are key to a meaningful life, adding depth to both personal and community experiences.

Missing boater found in Ohio River identified

GALLATIN COUNTY, Ky. (WXIX) - Crews have recovered the body of a man who went missing early Monday in the Ohio River, according to the Gallatin County Emergency Management Agency.

The Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office said the man, identified as 48-year-old Aaron Kime, was found shortly before 12:30 p.m. near the area where he fell off his boat around 3 a.m. on Monday.

Kime fell from his boat along the Ohio River in Warsaw, near Paint Lick Road.

The effort changed from search and rescue to search and recovery on Tuesday, Gallatin County Emergency Management Agency Director Brandon Terrell confirmed to FOX19 NOW.

Kime and some of his friends were returning from pleasure boating unrelated to Riverfest. He was sitting on his boat when he stood up and fell into the water, the EMA said Monday.

The family of the 48-year-old released a statement:

First responders including Terrell began search operations around 3 a.m. Monday.

At least 10 agencies assisted in the search with boats and sonar.

Terrell said these were the agencies involved in the effort Tuesday: Gallatin County Fire Department, Gallatin County EMA, Jeff-Craig Fire Department, Kentucky Fish and Wildlife and Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

Indiana authorities were involved because the area of the river where the man vanished borders them, Terrell said.

1 man found dead, 2 still missing after boat crashes into jetty

OLD SAYBROOK, Conn. (WFSB/Gray News) - Officials say one man was found dead and two others are missing after a boat crashed into a jetty in Connecticut.

The Coast Guard says a boat carrying nine people crashed into a jetty along the Connecticut River at high speed. The call was received around 9 p.m. Monday, WFSB reports .

Investigators believe the group was returning from a day trip to Block Island and are all local to the Old Saybrook area.

A single motorboat was found, half-submerged, near the Harbor One Marina in Old Saybrook. There was significant damage to the boat.

The boat was pulled from the river late Tuesday morning, and firefighters responded to a fuel leak that was cleaned up.

Six people – a man and five women, whose ages range from mid-20s to 30s – were rescued. They were all taken to the hospital and later released.

Authorities began searching for three missing men, who were reportedly not wearing life jackets.

One of the missing men was found dead during the search early Tuesday, according to officials with the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

The search for the two remaining victims, both in their 20s, continued Tuesday. Crews utilized sonar technology in a search effort, with five boats scouring the waters around the crash site.

Authorities are investigating various factors, including currents, tides, wind direction and the boat’s GPS data to determine the boat’s speed and conditions leading up to the crash.

The boat has been towed to the DEEP office in Old Lyme for further analysis.

Guilford’s dive team responded, along with boats, personnel and ambulances from nearby towns, working to locate and assist the missing persons.

The Coast Guard also sent a helicopter from Cape Cod to assist search efforts.

This summer we will finalize the first X-Power 33C with twin outboard engines. The powerboat will be ready for sea trial during July and the first boat is ready for delivery January 2023.

During the summer, we will use the boat for selected boat shows and other events both locally and abroad. We have decided to work closey together with two of the biggest brands in this market Yamaha & Mercury. The first boat will be equipped with 2 x 300 hp. Smaller engine sizes will also be available as well as single engines for customers with less requirement for speed and option

When introducing the X-Power 33C with twin outboard motors, it allows for more “Ease of use” features like joystick steering, active trim, adaptive speed control, improved engine data on the twin Simrad MFD & other special features. Not only will it add a different appeal to the boat but also improve performance and maneuverability.

The Best Celebrity Vacations of 2024, Ranked in Order of How Badly I Wish I’d Taken Them

Vacation : It is, famously, all The Go-Go’s ever wanted ( vay-cay-tion, had to get away !), but it’s also an exercise in capitalist comparison and ensuing despair. Personally, I can’t seem to scroll through my Instagram feed these days without learning that seemingly everyone who used to bully me in middle school is currently in Lisbon. And when it comes to celebrity vacations, my heart is even smaller, colder, and more infected with jealousy. Good for them, but also…that should be me on that yacht in the Mediterranean!

Sure, most celebrities work hard (I mean, not ER-nurse hard or third-grade-teacher hard, but they’re definitely called upon to put in the hustle in their own way), and yes, I’m a socialist who believes we should basically all be on government-sponsored holidays all of the time, but I still can’t help going green with envy at the sight of some of our most beloved music, TV, and film stars getting away from it all during the summer. And so, without further ado, here’s a ranking of the celebrity vacations that I wish I had taken this summer.

Stockholm looks beautiful and all, but it’s too much biking for me. Next!

6. Salma Hayek dancing on a yacht in Ibiza

This is the energy I hope to embody every day of my life, even though I am rarely on a yacht and even more infrequently in Ibiza.

5. Nicole Kidman (and her hat) on Fire Island

“I got a lot of love,” Kidman said in a recent interview of her visits to New York’s gay beach haven (possibly not actually this summer, but play along)—adding that she used a time-tested accessory to avoid undue attention: “I wore a hat.” I can’t believe that worked, but I am jealous of the Fire Island visitors who got to party next to an incognito Nicole Kidman without even knowing it!

4. Magic and Cookie Johnson’s French party yacht

Imagine if your summer plans were simply chartering a mega-yacht for yourself, your family, and a bunch of your friends (including Samuel L. Jackson, NBD). Well, Magic and Cookie Johnson don’t have to imagine it, as this is simply their estival reality. Obviously, their European journey was the real thing to envy, but for some reason, I’m deeply charmed by the image of this mega-famous athlete kicking back and watching women’s Olympic gymnastics on his multi-million-dollar vessel.

3. Bradley Cooper, Gigi Hadid, Margot Robbie, et al. on a superyacht in Italy

Okay, I have to rank this yacht a little higher than the Johnsons’ merely because a pregnant Robbie is on it, and I would lay down my life for her. (True Barbiecore stans never die, we just age!) Am I a fan of Cooper’s man bun? Not really, but presumably there are lots of places on the boat where I could go to avoid the sight of it.

2. Dua Lipa (and Callum Turner) in Italy

Dua is a known vacation queen after my own heart, and the pop star’s 2024 summer holidays in Italy look pretty picture-perfect: blue seas, pool floats shared with boyfriends, eclectic knit bikini cover-ups, and blended drinks abound. But the real sign of a good time is how blurry and, well, bad some of these group shots are . If all the photos are perfectly composed, it can’t have been that good of a party, as I always say.

1. Zendaya and Tom Holland, also in Italy

This vacation looks very similar in energy to Dua Lipa and Callum Turner’s, except without the relentless party energy. And given that I am a recovering English major who is now fully in my 30s, I have to admit that this is the platonic ideal of celebrity vacations for me. Trading books with your partner in a private pool, with your hair in two casual braids while the sun beams warmly down upon your relaxation activities? A dream.
