In the very technical, precise, and number-loving world of yachting–be it hull length, maximum speed, year built, and so much more–there seems to be much confusion in the categories of yacht types. Those in and out of the yachting industry often hear the terms yacht, superyacht, and even megayacht thrown around casually, and, quite often, interchangeably. So what is a superyacht, really? Is the term “yacht” all-encompassing? Is “gigayacht” really a thing? Do exact numbers come into play? Read on for a deep dive into the different types of yachts.

What Is a Yacht?

While the term “yacht” technically refers to any boat–sailing or motorized–that has sleeping accommodations aboard, the word is typically used for vessels under 80 feet in length. Usually used for pleasure, yachts can also be categorized as vessels specifically used for racing and/or cruising. While still the dream of many, the general term “yacht” usually refers to the “smaller” (we use that word very lightly) boats you may see cruising exotic locations.

What Is a Superyacht?

Much like a yacht, a superyacht is also a luxurious vessel used for pleasure; the distinction is in its size. Much of the confusion between whether a vessel falls under the yacht, superyacht, or even megayacht category is still pretty unclear amongst industry professionals. The numbers vary depending on who you ask. Generally speaking, though, a superyacht is usually a yacht whose length exceeds 80 feet. But here’s where things get really puzzling. What really is “large”? Where on the spectrum do different yachts fall? And where does it end? Does Size Really Matter?

Other than literal size–mostly gauged and compared by the length of the vessel–you may be wondering what really is the difference between all these types of yachts. Some may think: the bigger the better . This all depends on what you value most. Usually, the bigger the yacht, the bigger the crew. With more crew members available to maintain a ship and serve passengers, often the service aboard superyachts (and megayachts) is of the utmost level. On the flip side, some may feel that regular yachts are more their speed–literally; smaller yachts can sometimes reach speeds that larger vessels can’t match, upping the action. Mega Yacht vs Superyacht: Unraveling the Differences

Superyacht vs. megayacht—the definitions are oft-debated, and industry professionals have yet to fully agree. But as yachts get bigger by the year it’s a subject that keeps evolving. 

Is it based on size alone or also function? Is it yet another debate between proponents of the British language and that of the Americans? Here we’ll take a look at all the sides of the argument and see how what was once “I say tom-ah-to you say to-may-to” may, in fact, be on its way to an important and necessary definition in the superyacht world.

What is a Superyacht?

For as far back as we look, the marine industry has always defined boats and yachts, categorizing them by their main function or style. From center consoles to schooners, trawlers to catamarans, we have a category for them all. The term superyacht, however, has always been based predominantly on size—yachts over 80 feet to be precise—and of course they had to be luxurious, too. No-one is calling a 90-foot commercial fishing boat a superyacht, but a 90-foot luxury sportfishing model by Viking Yachts fits the bill just fine. The other major criteria to be classified as a superyacht—apart from being privately owned—is to have a full-time captain and crew (as opposed to the owner being the captain). The only true bottom line, however, is that the industry has long agreed that superyachts were the largest and most elite vessels in the world.

What is a Megayacht?

Here the definitions get trickier. Even the spelling isn’t fully agreed upon yet as some write mega yacht, others megayacht. For a long time, the term megayacht was the more common term for large luxury yachts in the United States, while in Europe they have always been superyachts. But that picture is certainly changing now, because of the emergence of some true behemoths of yachts.

A decade ago a 180-foot or 55-meter superyacht was considered big. These days, that superyacht is dwarfed by some gargantuan vessels ranging all the way up to the very largest private yacht in the world, Azzam , at 590 feet in length. It seems logical therefore that we need a different classification to separate a 35-meter superyacht from a 350-meter one. And the term megayacht has fit nicely into that space. While industry insiders are not all aligned, most categorize a megayacht as being larger than a superyacht—some say over 260 feet (80 meters), others classify a megayacht as over 200 feet (60 meters). But as we’ll see below, gross tonnage, the crew and guests, as well as safety, maintenance, and management also play a role in this new classification.

The world’s megayachts are a sight to behold and are often the driving force of the yachting world’s innovation. Some of the most famous include Eclipse at 533 feet (162.5m) one of the first megayachts built back in 2010, Dubai at 531 feet (162m), Blue at 525 feet (160m), and A+ at 483 feet (147.25m). Superyacht vs Megayacht: What Are the Main Differences?

For those using the term megayacht as a classification of yacht larger than a superyacht, the generally accepted size, as mentioned, is a private luxury yacht over either 200 or 260 feet (60 or 80m). But actually it’s more than just length that is playing a deciding role. Gross tonnage in shipping dictates how a vessel is operated, and any vessels over 3000GT will have a whole different set of regulations. Some yachts over 200 feet long are above 3000GT and almost all yachts over 260 feet exceed 3000GT, so it seems logical that this definition stands. There are exceptions, such as the 278.8 feet (85m) Victorious , for example, whose gross tonnage is 2,291GT. While certainly a superyacht, is she a megayacht? Based on overall length, we’d have to say yes, but the captain’s qualifications, the number of guests she can accommodate, and the safety and management regulations will be quite different. 

Megayacht vs superyacht crew and guests

When talking about yachts over 3000GT, there are many operational regulations that change considerably above and below 3000GT, especially the captain’s qualifications. Instead of just 12 guests, they are able to accommodate many more overnight passengers and the guest-to-crew ratios are greatly increased. In essence, a private yacht over 3000GT will need to be classified and run as though it is a commercial vessel with regards the captain, crew, and passengers. 

Does the type of crew makes a difference to the classification? Yes, a yacht over 3000GT is more likely to have masseuses, dive instructors, personal trainers, watersports instructors, and Michelin chefs, but that doesn’t mean superyachts can’t also have them (and there are many that do). 

Megayacht vs superyacht cost

It makes sense that the larger the yacht, the more it will cost, but the price tag isn’t necessarily a defining characteristic of whether a yacht is a superyacht or a megayacht. In fact, the most expensive superyacht ever built is History Supreme , worth $4.8 billion. What is most surprising here though is that History Supreme is ‘just’ 100 feet long. It is, among other extravagances, inlaid with 24-carat gold, which helps explain the price tag, but it’s a perfect example of how cost doesn’t define megayacht status. As a comparison, estimates of Azzam ‘s cost are just under $600 million to build. Having said that, there are industry insiders who believe that an extremely high level of service and facilities can raise a superyacht into the megayacht realm. Superyachts, Megayachts, and Gigayachts?

Before we’ve even come to a final consensus on the definition of a megayacht, we encounter the term gigayacht. To look at the possible need for yet another classification we go back to our example of Azzam at 590 feet long. Should an almost-600-foot ultra-luxury private yacht be categorized the same as a 260-foot yacht? Many in the industry think not, that it provides a better categorization of the biggest of the big yachts in an industry producing ever-larger designs. Others roll their eyes, however. Whether the terms mega- and giga are just marketing spinners or a genuine need for classification of the ever-growing luxury yachts being launched is, for now, a case of “Watch this space.”

Understanding the Differences Between Yachts, Superyachts and Megayachts

Yachting is a luxurious pastime that has captivated the affluent for centuries. However, within this realm of opulence, there are significant distinctions between various types of yachts, particularly when comparing yachts, superyachts, and megayachts. These differences are not merely in size but encompass design, amenities, technological advancements, and even the lifestyle they offer.

What is a yacht?

A yacht is a sailing or power vessel used for pleasure, cruising, or racing. Generally, yachts range from 30 feet (9 metres) to about 79 feet (24 metres) in length. They are typically characterised by their elegant design, comfortable interiors, and the ability to provide a luxurious experience on the water. Yachts can be categorised into several types, such as sailing yachts, motor yachts, sports yachts, and expedition yachts, each serving different purposes and offering unique experiences.

Key features of yachts

• Size and Design: Yachts usually fall within the 30 to 79 feet range. They are designed for personal use and can accommodate a small number of guests comfortably.
• Amenities: Standard yachts come with essential amenities like bedrooms, bathrooms, a kitchen (galley), and living areas. Some may also have additional features such as sun decks, swimming platforms, and basic entertainment systems.

The term “super yacht” refers to larger, more luxurious vessels that exceed the typical size and amenities of standard yachts. Super yachts are generally over 79 feet (24 metres) but can be as long as 200 feet (60 metres). The primary differentiator is the level of luxury and customisation available.

• Size and customisation: Superyachts start at 79 feet and can extend up to 200 feet. They are often custom-built to the owner’s specifications, featuring bespoke interiors and exterior designs.
• Luxury amenities: These vessels come equipped with high-end amenities such as multiple staterooms, expansive salons, gourmet kitchens, formal dining areas, and crew quarters. They often have additional features like jacuzzis, gyms, helipads, and advanced entertainment systems.
• Crew and services: Unlike standard yachts, superyachts typically require a professional crew to operate and maintain them. This can include captains, engineers, chefs, and service staff, ensuring a high level of service and comfort.
• Range and capability: Superyachts are designed for long-range cruising, allowing owners to explore remote and exotic locations . They are built to handle more extended voyages and rougher seas, providing a more adventurous yachting experience.

Another example is the Amels 188, which boasts a dedicated beach club, wellness centre, and an impressive range of 4,500 nautical miles.

Megayachts represent the epitome of luxury and opulence on the water. These vessels are usually over 200 feet (60 metres) in length and are designed to offer the highest level of comfort, technology, and service imaginable. Megayachts are synonymous with extravagance and are often owned by billionaires, celebrities, and royalty.

Key features of megayachts

• Unmatched size: Megayachts are the largest in the yachting world, often exceeding 200 feet. They can feature multiple decks, expansive outdoor spaces, and vast interiors.
• Extravagant amenities: The amenities on megayachts are unparalleled. These can include swimming pools, cinemas, spas, onboard hospitals, submarines, and even mini-submarines. The interiors are often designed by renowned designers, featuring the finest materials and craftsmanship.
• Advanced technology: Megayachts are equipped with the latest technological advancements, including state-of-the-art navigation systems, advanced communication setups, and extensive security measures.
• Crew and operations: Operating a megayacht requires a large crew, sometimes exceeding 50 members. This ensures that every aspect of the yacht’s operation and guest experience is managed flawlessly.
• Exclusivity and privacy: Megayachts provide an unparalleled level of privacy and exclusivity. They are often used for private events, exclusive parties, and extended vacations in utmost secrecy.

The Azzam, currently the world’s largest private yacht, measures an astounding 590 feet and boasts features like a missile defense system and a submarine. Another example is the Eclipse, owned by Roman Abramovich, which features two helipads, a disco hall, and a cinema.

Most people define a superyacht as a vessel used for pleasure, which is larger than 24m (80ft) and has full-time captain and crew employed all year round. This is therefore quite different to a smaller privately owned yacht, captained by its owner, with perhaps one or two temporary crew to assist them in the summer.

The dividing line between superyachts and megayachts however is more blurred, and there is no strict or commonly agreed definition.  If a dividing line was to be proposed on length, then many would agree that this would be around the 80m (260ft) mark, but there is no hard line and some industry insiders also use the gross tonnage (volume) as the dividing line, 3,000GT being a line that a lot of regulations follow. It could also be said that the word superyacht can be used in a more inclusive way, and that all megayachts are superyachts, but not all superyachts are megayachts.

To explain, just a decade ago a 60m (200ft) was considered mega. Today there are yachts being built that are as large as 180m (590ft). As the size of yachts continues to grow so does the need for observers to demarcate the elite 100m+ (330ft+) yachts, and with this comes the introduction of the hyperbolic terms megayacht and even gigayacht.

However, most would agree that today’s megayachts are 80m+ (260ft+) with a minimum of 25 crew who operate the vessel all year round using largely rotational crew and run to a high commercial shipping standard.

What is the difference between a superyacht and megayacht?

Megayachts are run more along the lines of a cruise ship or passenger ship and follow many of the same regulations whereas superyachts can still, at least to some extent, follow a more bespoke pattern defined by its owner. This is not to say that a megayacht does not go or do what its owner wants it to do, but there are much stricter regulations in place for yachts over 3,000GT, including full merchant navy certification for all deck and engineering officers.

Length vs gross tonnage

The simplest way to explain the difference between length and size of a superyacht is with the 157m (512ft) DILBAR. The megayacht is the fifth largest yacht in the world by length (in June 2022), but with a gross tonnage of 15,917GT, in volume terms she is actually the largest yacht in the world (although she is soon to be overtaken by the in-build 183m (600ft) REV OCEAN). Compare DILBAR to the longest yacht in the world, the 180m (590ft) AZZAM, which has a gross tonnage of 13,136GT, and you can see that longest and largest are two different things.

When it comes to gross tonnage the big step-changes with regard to shipping regulations are 500GT and 3,000GT. Being over 80m-long all megayachts are over 3,000GT. The likes of the 108m (354.2ft) IJE, for example, is 3,3670GT and is operated by a crew of 30, and similarly the 92.4m (303.2ft) TATOOSH has a gross tonnage of 3,229.

However, a yacht like the 85m (278.8ft) AKYACHT VICTORIOUS , for example, at 2,291GT, is a bona fide superyacht at the very top end of that definition, but significantly she is well under 3,000GT. In fact, the difference between managing yachts under and over 3,000GT is quite significant, including for example different captain’s qualifications between a Master 3000, designed for superyacht helming of yachts under 3,000GT, and a Master (Yachts) Unlimited, which enables that captain to run any vessel of any size, even the Queen Mary 2 or a supertanker.

Benefits: what makes a superyacht a superyacht?

Synonymous with luxury and glamour, a superyacht typically offers owner and guests the freedom to travel the world in ultimate comfort and privacy. A superyacht will be professionally crewed, providing its owner and guests with spectacular service, including a captain, chef, engineer and chief stewardess as a minimum.

Ranging from two decks to up to three or four decks for guests, a superyacht will have sumptuous accommodations for between six and 12 guests, as well as luxurious communal living areas, both inside and out on deck. From entertaining and dining areas to beach clubs, swim platforms and sun decks, along with watertoys, superyachts are designed entirely for relaxation and fun, with no other commercial purpose.

Most of the largest superyachts are custom built, representing the pinnacle of design and craftsmanship, while the smaller range of superyachts, between 30-40m (100-130ft) are usually built on a semi-custom platform with their own unique interior design. However, rest assured almost every superyacht, be it a 24m (80ft) or an 80m (260ft), will carry some watertoys to keep every guest entertained while on board, along with a tender to escort guests ashore at their whim and in comfort.

B enefits: what makes a megayacht a megayacht? 

Aside from having all of the same facilities and amenities of a superyacht, a megayacht will sometimes have special passenger licenses allowing them to accommodation and carry more than 12 guests at the same time. Guest to crew ratios are also greatly increased, with crew numbers on the largest megayachts reaching 80+, sometimes including Michelin-star trained chefs, masseuses, beauty therapists, dive instructors and personal trainers, as well as captains (often on a rotational basis), chief engineer and engineers, first officer, first mate, chief stewardess, a number of deckhands and stewardesses.

Megayachts will have their own gyms, spas, helipads, helicopter hangars, cinema rooms, spa pools and swimming pools, private owners’ decks or even apartments, and beach clubs to rival some of the best on land. Some come with their own chase boats, while others may cruise in tandem with a support vessel to carry all manner of watertoys and other equipment, including submarines.

Superyacht vs Megayacht Charters Differences

Superyachts are all large enough to have at least two or three full-time crew on board. Charter yachts in this size range usually start with three or four guest staterooms and can have six or more staterooms at the larger end of the size range.

What’s great about the superyacht size category is that it offers a truly interesting mix of options for charter clients. Some of these charter yachts are decked out for snorkeling and diving, while others are set up more for fishing and water sports. Still, others may focus on outdoor dining and sun, while others have more features for onboard entertaining and parties.

Charter clients can truly choose the type of experiences they want to have in this size range, aboard yachts that are tailored for those experiences. Many families, for instance, choose superyachts with features and crews that are specifically set up for kids. Some even have baby gates, child-size life jackets, and water skis for smaller feet.

Megayachts are typically semi-custom or fully custom designs, which means no two are ever completely the same. Owners of megayachts can often specify anything they want in terms of onboard features: indoor or outdoor cinemas, fire pits, infinity pools, tricked-out gymnasiums, DJ booths, dance floors, helipads, and more.

Thomas Legner (61) ist der Generaldirektor von The World, der größten privaten Wohnyacht.

Das Schiff verfügt über 165 Wohnungen, die den Bewohnern gehören, und segelt ständig um die Welt.

Legner sagt, auf dem Schiff sei es nicht wie auf einer Kreuzfahrt – es sei wie ein exklusiver Country Club auf dem Wasser.

Dieser Artikel basiert auf einem Gespräch mit Thomas Legner, dem 61-jährigen General Manager von The World. Er wurde aus Gründen der Länge und Klarheit überarbeitet.

The World ist die größte private Wohn-Yacht der Welt. Sie hat nichts von einer Kreuzfahrt, sondern ist eher ein Country Club auf dem Wasser. Es gibt 165 Apartments auf dem Schiff , und wir haben durchschnittlich 200 Bewohner an Bord. Unser jüngster Bewohner ist fünf Jahre alt, und unser ältester Bewohner 80.

Ich bin seit Januar 2014 General Manager des Schiffes. Zuvor war ich General Manager für das Intercontinental in Wien und davor für das Four Seasons tätig. Zu The World wollte ich, weil es kein anderes Schiff dieser Art gibt. Die Passagiere entscheiden, wohin wir jedes Jahr fahren. Wir sind schon bis in die Antarktis und nach Papua-Neuguinea gereist.

Es ist keine Kreuzfahrt, es ist ein exklusives Zuhause auf dem Meer

Da es sich nicht um eine Kreuzfahrt handelt, gibt es auch keinen Kapitänstisch oder Begrüßungsdrinks. The World ist ein Zuhause. Die meisten Menschen leben fünf bis sieben Jahre auf dem Schiff, aber einige Bewohner sind schon von Beginn an, also seit 22 Jahren dabei. Unsere Bewohner können das ganze Jahr über auf dem Schiff leben, wenn sie es wünschen. Aber da sie oft noch andere Wohnungen haben, teilen sie ihre Zeit zwischen den Residenzen auf.

Es gibt vier Möglichkeiten, an Bord des Schiffes zu kommen: ein Apartment kaufen, als Gast eingeladen werden, als potenzieller Käufer einen Probeaufenthalt genießen oder dem exklusiven Mitgliederclub Exclusive Resorts beitreten. Der Club besitzt vier Immobilien auf The World als Teil seines Angebots, aber es gibt eine Warteliste, um an Bord zu kommen.

Immer wieder kommen Gerüchte darüber auf, wem ein Apartment auf The World gehört. Wir hatten in der Vergangenheit schon Politiker und Fernsehstars an Bord, aber wir verraten nichts über die Bewohner des Schiffes. Ich würde einfach sagen, dass jeder Bewohner auf seinem Gebiet führend ist. Im Moment steht nur eine kleine Anzahl von Wohnungen zum Kauf zur Verfügung.

Die Anwesenheit des Personals sollte man spüren, nicht sehen

Wir haben sechs Restaurants an Bord, eine Kunstgalerie, ein Schwimmbad, ein Fitnesscenter, einen Golfsimulator und ein Spa. Außerdem haben wir eine Boutique und einen Lebensmittelladen. Die Mitarbeiter wissen, dass sie in einem Zuhause arbeiten. Wir sind respektvoll und höflich.

Keines der Besatzungsmitglieder außer dem Kapitän würde einen Bewohner oder Gast jemals mit seinem Vornamen ansprechen. Wir behandeln sie so, wie das Personal eines Luxushotels seine Gäste behandeln würde.

Ich bin der festen Überzeugung, dass man Service spüren, aber nicht sehen sollte. Wir haben ein Profil jedes Bewohners, in dem alle seine Vorlieben aufgeführt sind, von Allergien bis hin zu der Frage, ob er große oder kleine Eiswürfel in seinem Getränk mag. Die Bewohner können Zutaten im Lebensmittelladen des Schiffes kaufen und in ihrem Apartment kochen. Doch wenn sie in ein Restaurant gehen, sollten sie uns nur einmal sagen müssen, was sie mögen oder nicht mögen.

Anders als bei einer normalen Kreuzfahrt ist das ganze Schiff auf die Vorlieben der Bewohner ausgerichtet. Dabei kann es sich um die Art der Bettwäsche handeln, die sie in ihrem Appartement haben möchten, oder darum, welche Hafenaktivitäten sie mögen. Wir planen die Reiserouten zwei Jahre im Voraus. Dazu erstellen wir einen Fahrplan, sobald die Bewohner über die Ziele abgestimmt haben. Derzeit arbeiten wir an dem Fahrplan für 2027.

Crew und Bewohner haben einmalige Erlebnisse

Wir sind immer bestrebt, den Bewohnern besondere Momente zu bieten. Bei einer Gelegenheit, als es ein perfekter Tag auf See war, haben wir das Schiff am Äquator angehalten. Wir haben ein motorisiertes Schlauchboot, nördlich des Äquators und ein anderes südlich des Äquators platziert. So konnten die Gäste mitten auf dem Atlantik über den Äquator schwimmen.

Auch die Besatzung genießt besondere Momente. Wenn die Bewohner Ausflüge machen, kann die Crew mit Dünenbuggys durch die namibische Wüste fahren oder unter dem Sternenhimmel im Wadi Rum in Jordanien speisen.

Es ist unsere Aufgabe, die Wünsche der Bewohner zu erfüllen. So kann es sein, dass sie einen Tisch in einem Michelin-Stern-Restaurant mit Warteliste wünschen, was wir auch in der Regel schaffen. Andere brauchen vielleicht in letzter Minute einen Privatjet . In einem früheren Leben wäre ich vielleicht in kalten Schweiß ausgebrochen, aber jetzt machen wir es einfach möglich. Der Schlüssel zum Umgang mit Last-Minute-Anfragen liegt darin, flexibel zu sein und Alternativen zu haben, wenn die ursprüngliche Anfrage nicht möglich ist.

Wir haben Probleme, die es auf Kreuzfahrten nicht gibt

Als Wohnschiff haben wir Probleme, die es auf Kreuzfahrten vielleicht nicht gibt. Eines unserer größten Probleme ist die Lagerung. Wir haben wahrscheinlich 80 Golftaschen im Lager. Die Bewohner bringen auch ihre Möbel und Kunstwerke mit, aber sie wollen nicht alles ausstellen. Vielleicht wollen sie den Picasso später gegen den Rembrandt austauschen.

Wir geben niemals bekannt, wo sich das Schiff zu einem bestimmten Zeitpunkt befindet. Die Besatzung ist auch angewiesen, aus Sicherheitsgründen niemals in den sozialen Medien zu verkünden, dass sie sich auf The World befindet und wo das Schiff liegt.

Die Pandemie war die größte Herausforderung für mich als General Manager

Der herausforderndste Tag für mich als General Manager war im März 2020, zu Beginn der Pandemie. Wir waren gerade in Fremantle, Australien, angekommen, als die Flughäfen und Häfen zu schließen begannen. Die Gäste und die Hälfte der Besatzung flogen nach Hause. Der Rest der Besatzung blieb an Bord, um das Schiff zu warten.

Ich weiß noch, wie ich mit dem Kapitän auf der Brücke stand. Er sagte, es sei das erste Mal gewesen, dass er nicht wusste, ob er nach links oder nach rechts fahren sollte, da wir kein Ziel hatten. Die Ungewissheit war schwierig.

Der schönste Tag auf dem Schiff war die Begrüßung der Menschen, die im Juli 2021 zurückkehrten. Ich bekomme immer noch eine Gänsehaut, wenn ich daran denke. Einige Leute hatten wir seit über einem Jahr nicht mehr gesehen. Alle waren zu Tränen gerührt.

Das Schönste an meinem Job ist der Umgang mit der Besatzung und den Bewohnern und die Schaffung von tollen Erlebnissen. Vor ein paar Wochen sagte mir jemand, The World sei wie Four Seasons auf Steroiden. Unsere Crew-Mitglieder schaffen etwas so Unvergessliches, dass die Leute gar nicht mehr gehen wollen.

A hitherto unprecedented feat of engineering come luxury, Ulyssia is set to overshadow not just the grandeur of the Titanic — which, I think we can all admit, would feel a little dated today… even if it had stayed afloat — but its monumental size too. At a staggering 1,063 feet, this floating palace promises to redefine luxury sea travel.

Design And Specifications

Designed by esteemed designer Espen Øino, Ulyssia features a self-proclaimed sleek and elegant silhouette, marking it as one of the longest vessels to ever grace the seas. With a robust steel hull and a lightweight aluminium superstructure, it will be constructed by historic German shipyard Meyer Werft. This colossal yacht surpasses current giants like the 593-foot Azzam , presently the largest superyacht on the seas, and the 1,198-foot Icon of the Seas , the biggest cruise liner.

The interiors of Ulyssia , brought to life by the Italian firm FM Architettura, promise five-star luxury. The yacht will house 132 private residences, ranging from 1,216 to (ab eye-watering) 10,000 square feet. These private abodes include penthouses, family duplexes, and apartments with one to six bedrooms. Each residence will boast elegant reception rooms, open-plan kitchens, private terraces, and uninterrupted ocean views. Owners can either choose from eight exquisite design options or customize their interiors.

Amenities And Cutting-Edge Technology

An onboard wellness centre, managed by Swiss experts Chenot, includes a state-of-the-art spa, fitness centre, and a medical facility equipped with advanced tools like X-rays, MRIs, and ultrasounds. For foodies, the yacht will feature multiple restaurants with world-renowned and emerging guest chefs. A gourmet market will offer local produce from the ship’s cruising regions, complemented by a well-stocked wine cellar…

An incredible mega yacht so large that has its own submarine could double as a billionaires playground and a research lab.

Plans for the 700ft Goliath yacht includes research equipment, jet skis, helicopters and three heated pools.

The vessel is touted to cost a whopping £1 billion - $A2 billion.

Part of the Goliath series, the Q-quest yacht designed by California based yacht designer Steve Kozloff.

The massive research floater has been described as an expedition dream, providing plenty of lab space for research, experimentation, and medical intervention.

The mega-yacht is also loaded with plenty of exploration vehicles, including six hydrofoil tenders, two seaplanes, three jet skies, two helicopters, a U-Worx Research submarine, and a garage for two overland SUVs.

A separate hangar at midship stores two Cessna Caravan Seaplanes, selected for their ability to transport resupply across long distances.

The three upper decks are reserved for the owner and guests, offering 18 VIP cabins and a primary suite with a private balcony and pool.

It also boasts five-star amenities like a beach club, Turkish bath, three heated pools, yoga studio, and a 20-person theatre.

The mega yacht also has an impressive 3,000-square-foot owner’s suite with panoramic views at the bow, a large spa and pool, a basketball court.

There’s another pool with a shaded lounge area above the hangar, a dining room at the stern, and a solarium with a second dining area, plus a beach club with a full bar.

A total of 26 owner’s guests will reside on the three upper decks, while an operating crew of 150 including doctors, scientists, pilots, nurses, research engineers will reside in unspecified quarters.

Luxury aside, the predominantly research vessel would carry a complete oceanographic laboratory, a medical laboratory with MRI and X-ray imaging.

It could even hold as many as 20 hospital beds with 5G-connected robotic surgery facilities.

Propelled by thrusters powered by batteries, the vessel can reach a top speed of 20 knots with a range of 20,000 nautical miles.

Kozloff told autoevolution : “The mission of G-Quest, a 705-foot yacht, allows its owner to oversee their philanthropic efforts while living in luxury at sea.

“It is designed for both humanitarian and research objectives.”

The G-quest isn’t the only luxury yacht to boast a helipad.

Plans for the “Floating Dubai” vessel include an enormous pool deck , a relaxing spa and not one, but two enormous helipads on board.

Christened UAE One, the superboat was designed by Milan-based Enzo Manca, who collaborated with a sheikh to make it the flagship of the United Arab Emirates.

In a statement, Manca said: “The idea of UAE One was born in 2020, during a very special meeting between me and a sheikh of the United Arab Emirates on vacation in Italy.

“The sultan was very clear and categorical, he wanted something really special and unique.”

UAE One is inspired by historic defence ships, yet its curving lines distinguishes it from other vessels on the high seas.

With nine decks and a total area of slightly over 30,000 square feet, the monster yacht is designed to give guests, diplomats, and kings the finest experience possible.

There is an owner’s suite, eight cabins, and 14 mini suites within.

The staff has 35 cabins as well.

The main deck, meanwhile, has a beautiful 18-metre geometric swimming pool.

There are also several outdoor lounges for sundowners, a platform for ocean swims, and a wellness centre with a spa on board.

Newly released video captures a luxury superyacht being battered by a violent storm before it suddenly sank off Sicily with 22 people aboard  Monday.

The grainy images obtained by NBC News and other outlets were recorded on closed-circuit television not far from where the Bayesian was anchored,  about a half-mile from the port of Porticello, on Sicily’s northern coast .

The yacht's 250-foot mast, illuminated with lights and lashed by the storm, appears to bend to one side before it finally disappears and is replaced by darkness.

The speed with which a yacht built to handle the roughest seas capsized stunned maritime experts.  

“I can’t remember the last time I read about a vessel going down quickly like that, you know, completely capsizing and going down that quickly, a vessel of that nature, a yacht of that size,” said Stephen Richter  of SAR Marine Consulting.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and five of the 22 other people who were aboard the 184-foot vessel remain unaccounted for and are believed to be trapped in the Bayesian’s hull, nearly 170 feet underwater.

Superyachts like the Bayesian, which had been available for charters at a rate of $215,000 a week, are designed to stay afloat even as they are taking on water to give the people aboard a chance to escape, Richter said. 

“Boats of this size, they’re taking passengers on an excursion or a holiday,” Richter said. “They are not going to put them in situations where it may be dangerous or it may be uncomfortable, so this storm that popped up was obviously an anomaly. These vessels that carry passengers, they’re typically very well-maintained, very well-appointed.”

Built by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered Bayesian could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world,  according to  CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters. 

On Tuesday, Italian rescue workers  resumed the search for Lynch  and the five other passengers still missing: Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife.

“The fear is that the bodies got trapped inside the vessel,” Salvatore Cocina, the head of civil protection in Sicily, told Reuters .

The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was one of the 15 people rescued Monday after it capsized.

“It’s extremely rare for a boat of this size to sink,” Richter said.

What’s not rare is the kind of storm that sank it , said Simon Boxall, senior lecturer in oceanography at Britain’s University of Southampton.

“People assume the Mediterranean is this rather calm and passive place that never gets storms and always blue skies,” Boxall said. “In fact, you get some quite horrendous storms that are not uncommon at this time of year.”

The president of Italy’s meteorological society has said Monday’s violent storm may have involved a waterspout, essentially a tornado over water, or a downburst, which occurs more frequently but doesn’t involve the rotation of the air.

Luca Mercalli, president of the Italian Meteorology Society, also said recent temperatures may have been a factor. 

“The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius [86 Fahrenheit], which is almost 3 degrees more than normal,” Mercalli told Reuters. “This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms.”

The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who two months ago was  acquitted by a San Francisco jury of fraud charges  stemming from the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion.

Prosecutors alleged that Lynch, dubbed “Britain’s Bill Gates,” and Autonomy’s vice president for finance, Stephen Chamberlain, had padded the firm’s finances ahead of the sale. Lynch’s lawyers argued that HP was so eager to acquire Autonomy that it failed to  adequately check the books .

Lynch had taken Morvill, who was one of his defense attorneys, on the luxury trip. 

Chamberlain was not on the Bayesian.

In what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a  car struck and killed Chamberlain on Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said.

“Steve fought successfully to clear his good name at trial earlier this year, and his good name now lives on through his wonderful family,” Chamberlain’s lawyer, Gary Lincenberg, said in a statement .
