The Buccaneer 24 Trimaran

The plans for this great little all-ply boat are/were still advertised here for about $150 , and include full size templates for frames (Go to this Forum for more info and track down 'OldSailor7' to inquire about these plans.). The boat demounts of course, and the aka tubes simply act as struts with virtually a ball joint at the main hull sleeve.  The attachment of the akas to the amas with saddles and straps is a little crude but it works, all helping to get the boat built in relatively low manhours.  Rigging wise, the mast actually holds the amas up but as long as nothing breaks, it works ok and is light!   The already 'rather loose' system would make fitting and using a rotating wingmast pretty tricky though.

NOTE:  Latest contact I have for Plans for most Buccaneer trimarans is here (2018):    [email protected]

There were originally three models of the Buccaneer. The B24, B28 and B32/33, if I remember well. A B24 in New Zealand (named Miranda—formerly Gulf Chariot), was extended in the stern to 28' to remove the excessive stern rocker that only worked well in light weather. They also removed the main hull daggerboard and added asymmetric foils in the floats (angled at approximately 25 degrees) and fitted a new, underhung and balanced rudder, rotating mast and 7 ⁄ 8 rig. This made the boat much quicker than the original, even though it was too light** to ever be slow (it could be even faster with a slightly taller flat-head rig).  It should be noted that using two ama boards instead of a central one may not suit everyone.   This will often mean getting wet to handle them on a very lively boat and if sailing in shallow or rough water, could be potentially dangerous.   I'd then consider a center or quadrant board that would pop-up more easily.  (I went through the same design trade-off exercise for my W22 and finally choose a quadrant board)

** one thing that kept these boats very light was their lack of epoxy sheathing.  The lightest one I saw was the one shown in the above photo.  At 28 years old she was still light and dry and the interior of the boat was only protected with a wood preservative like Cuprinol ..., not with epoxy.     Keeping a plywood boat dry and aired out is the REAL secret for a long life, but without sheathing you will need to nurse her a little more.

After owning two, I can say the B24 was amazingly nimble in very light airs, as it could be sailed only on the center hull, and in mixed racing in light conditions, she would often keep up with 40' racing monohulls !.   However, the high dihedral that permitted that, also made the boat very tippy at mooring and permitted more heel than normal on todays modern boats.   However, its that relatively high heel that allows wind to escape off the top as it does on monohulls, reducing the capsize moment and perhaps one of the main reasons this 24ft boat has no public record of capsizing to my knowledge.  There's always a design trade-off or compromises to be made ;)     Having sailed them quite a lot, together with their easy 'flip-flop' side to side at anchor or mooring, I'd say they do feel rather nervous and skittish with their light weight and higher heel angles than normal, but are still sporty and fun.  But graduating to Magic Hempel (a D25R) a few years later was like going from a Lotus 7 to an Audi Quattro, offering more performance with a lot less stress.    It's no wonder that I later used Magic Hempel as my guide and benchmark for my smaller W22 design.

For those who like traditional ply on frame construction (see #1 Method), the B24 is no doubt one of the best of the older designs still out there, with the boats by Norman Cross and the demountable Crowther Kraken designs being options from the same time period. I would however, recommend to modify the stern lines of the main B24 hull as was done on Miranda, as this can help the top end considerably. Otherwise, just follow the plans and keep it light. I've seen some that were overbuilt with too much epoxy etc., with added stiffeners, thicker ply and heavy sheathing, and they never did sail as well. Lock Crowther (aeronautical engineer) knew what he was doing! His son still runs a design business, but is into much bigger things.  Lock's other early Kraken designs were also well ahead of their time, with higher overall beam that normal for the 70's and his hulls were long and slim with minimum rocker, far more like today's fast boats than those from his era.    Hats off to Mr Crowther!

Buccaneer 24 (Crowther)

Buccaneer 24 (Crowther) is a 24 ′ 0 ″ / 7.3 m trimaran sailboat designed by Lock Crowther and built by From Plans starting in 1970.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Demountable. Main hull beam 3’. Plans were still available in 2009.

one in SF, then I was negotiating one in ft myers which ironically the second owner in fla knew and crewed on the SF boat (owners group buddies)
Turned down the second as the owner cut up the boat making it a which looked esthetically pleasing but looking/sighting thru the cabins plexiglass like looking threw a enclosed enclosure wasn't...then the first one came back on market as seen here...

Ferraris in the sailing world...I'd carry lotta a extra undies sailing one of those, 15plus knots under sail seems way stressful when done for a duration especially handed IMO.

Love the boat model but have concluded it's too much rocket-sailboat for me, I'd be another author prolly if I bought one...

I have a set of Lock Crowthers famous Buccaneer 24 trimaran plans for sale. This was arguably Locks most successful design in terms of how many have been built and sailed worldwide. Small, strong, fast and seaworthy--one can be built in 500 man hours in a small space. Plans include full size patterns, building instructions, bill of materials, a booklet on the Wood/Epoxy building technique and an article on how one was built in six weeks. Many are still cruising and racing. US$150.00 posted worldwide. If interested PM me for details.

I don't have that option when I click on yor post. It gives me 4 option but sending a PM is not one of the choices. It may be that I don't have full privileges as a new member.

More on Lock Crowther’s Buccaneer 24 Trimaran

by Small Tri Guy | Jul 24, 2010 | Self-built Small Trimarans , Small Tri Info - All | 8 comments

Lock Crowther’s Buccaneer 24 trimaran is a vintage design that still holds its own among contemporary small tri models. This is especially true when it comes to performance.

I first mentioned the Buccaneer 24 trimaran a while back . But this post comes to us from contributor Patrick McGrath, who knew Lock Crowther, served as a Canadian representative for his designs, and personally built 2 Buccaneer 24 models, which included one for himself.

Patrick kindly answers a few questions that I had for him (I could have sent him dozens more :-) … along with most of the photo images found below.

So please enjoy; this post is a gem — Small Tri Guy

I had an RAF career and since air force stations are mainly inland I didn’t see much water until my last posting, which was right in the North of Scotland. On the hard at Findhorn Bay, there was a “Dragon” class keelboat. I thought it was the most beautiful thing on earth and I made a vow that as soon as I got out of the RAF I would have a sailboat.

When I finished my service I went straight to Canada to a job in the Aero business. That winter I built a pram dinghy in my living room and sailed it in the Spring and Summer. I subsequently taught myself to sail fast on a Sunfish. I met a man at work who owned a Sillouette MKII, 18ft mono with twin keels. I sailed a lot with him and got the urge to have my own boat. I fancied a little 20ft DIY plywood mono called “Juanita”.

But then I saw a 3 view of Arthur Pivers’ “Nugget” in “Yachting” magazine. With my aeronautical background I immediately saw the logic of a simple lightweight plywood boat, with positive buoyancy for stability, instead of a heavy lump of lead. I read Arthur’s book “Trans Atlantic Trimaran”—and I was sold.

I bought the plans from Piver and built the boat in my car space in the underground carpark of my high-rise apartment. I built it during the winter in modular sections, carting them on top of my car to a marina at Lake Simcoe. I assembled it in the Spring — launching it in July 1964. With my wife and two boys, we sailed it every weekend in the summer and cruised for two weeks every summer vacation for four years. It was great.

I really got into the business of yacht design and became the Canadian Secretary of the AYRS. I realized that the aircraft industry was a Boom & Bust business and started my own part time company and registered it as “Canadian Multihull Services.” I chose what I considered to be the best multihull designers, and simply asked them if I could represent them by selling their plans in Canada and the USA.

Piver wanted exclusive agency, so I declined, as I did not want to drop the designers that I already had. This included Jim Brown, Norm Cross. Hedley Nichol, James Wharram, Robert Harris, and of course Lock Crowther … plus several others who didn’t make the grade and are now long forgotten. In 1966 Hedley was lost at sea, as was Piver in 1968. I wrote a book called “Modern Catamaran Design” which sold well, but which would seem archaic today. I also wrote the book, “50 Multihulls You Can Build” featuring all the designs offered by the designers whose agencies I had.

By 1970 I had to make a decision. I made the right one, quitting the aircraft business and going full time in my own. It was the best thing I ever did. In 1969 I sold a set of Kraken 40 plans to Dave Green, a Toronto businessman. I helped him build “Ringo” for the New York -Bermuda race. Lock came over for the race and that was when I first met him.

We talked a lot and he told me about his design for a small trimaran that could be built easily and quickly at low cost. He felt that to many boats that are planned, never get finished because of the long time, sustained effort and cost involved. He envisioned a boat that could be made from three sheets of ply joined end to end, without needing a strongback, and having its major stresses passing thu a main bulkhead. This would be achieved with standard alloy tubing for the crossbeams, mast, boom, and spinnaker pole, with stainless steel straps for the water stays, giving a strong, rigid but light structure for the whole boat.

Lock Crowther's Buccaneer 24 Trimaran

The result was the Buccaneer 24. I decided to build one for the 1970 Bermuda race, but I didn’t get it finished in time. I then wrote an article for the long gone “Trimariner” Magazine, called “A Buccaneer for Bermuda”.

Sailing the Buccaneer 24

I built ,sailed, cruised and raced a Buccaneer 24, in Canada in the middle seventies. I subsequently built two Buccaneer 28’s — one for a customer and the other for myself. I then built three Buccaneer 33’s in foam glass sandwhich. I was Locks Canada/USA agent from 1966 to 1977, when I sold my company and moved to Australia.

The Buccaneer 24 is a stunning performer. It is strong and light. It has a moderate waterline L/B ratio, so it is a comfortable cruiser for 3 people and sometimes 4.

Buccaneer 24 Trimaran at Dock

It’s multi chined bottom approximates a semicircle and so its low drag and light weight enable it to quietly move out when surrounding boats appear to be anchored to the water. It moves out smartly in a good wind.

Unlike many modern tris, its cockpit is comfortable and protects the helmsman, with good back support in the form of a coaming, which has lockers in it for easy access to sailing equipment. There is no need for an expensive or complicated mainsheet traveller. A diagram for a simple mainsheet/outhaul is included with the plans.

Buccaneer 24 Trimaran's Slender Hulls

There is a much modified B24, made of foam sandwich, with a streamlined cabin top sailing in Toronto Harbour, Canada, as we speak. It rivals any of the “Modern” designs currently being offered. It is called “Toy” and is a delight to the eye.

I want to make it quite clear that I am retired and am not in the plans selling or boat building business any more. I am only making the B24 plans available on request because I don’t want to let this wonderful example of lock Crowther’s genius to be lost. This was the most prolifically sold and built of all Lock’s designs, and is today the only one which is still available. Because I don’t think that this very special design should be allowed to die, I have been making the plans available again at about a quarter of the cost of comparable Tris.

If you go to “Boatdesign.net” and scroll down to “Multihulls” then search for “24ft Trimaran plans for sale” ,you will find a lot of information, including “Buccaneer 24 Trimaran”, “Buccaneer builders Forum”, “Lock Crowthers Biography” and other stuff.

Cheers, Patrick McGrath

Images of the Buccaneer 24 materials list and building instructions can be found here . And plans for the Buccaneer 24 Trimaran can be purchased from “OldSailor7” at BoatDesign.net

I have read your old book “Modern Catamaran Design”, a great read back then, but don’t have a copy in my personal library. I recall seeing your name around a lot as well. I owned two Brown Searunners so far and have raced and sailed on many other multihulls. Crowther may not be well known today but his cruising oriented Buccaneer series were exceptionally good boats, and fast. His Kraken series were just terrific race boats, and might even be competitive today, though probably some sort of handicap rule would likely be needed. The Buccaneer 24 I always thought was a very interesting smaller tri. I’ve seen them, been on one but never sailed one. I’ve raced on a larger multihull (up by Toronto i turned out) and one member of the Toronto Multihull Cruising Club had a B24. To say it’s stunning performer is, if anything, an understatement. I had a nice, fast small tri when I was single, a Searunner 25. However, it was a slow boat to the Orient when compared to the B24! If you have the guts, you’d make it from City Island, NY out to the end of Long Island in about half a day, meaning leaving early, around 7 or 8am, and arriving around Greenport by or before dark. That’s only about 115 miles along LI Sound. Try that on nearly any other boat except another really fast multihull! (Of course winds have to be right for that too.) I think the B24 is one of the older, faster cruiser/racers that would turn a heck of a lot of folks onto the joys of multihull sailing if they only sailed one!

Can ANYBODY find me a set of Buccaneer 28 plans PLEASE !

Cheers, Reuben Fremantle W.A [email protected]

Hello, How can i find out where to purchased the Plans for the 24 and at what cost ? Thank you very much Lutz

Hi Lutz, Contact the fellow nicknamed Oldsailor at the following page – http://www.boatdesign.net/forums/multihulls/22-24-trimaran-23449.html He sells the Buc building plans.

Good news! 24 years ago I bought and enjoyed a B24 for 8 yrs; saying since, many times “it was the best boat I ever had.” (30odd to date!) well 18 mths ago I bought another one in pieces, and rather neglected. However in Nov 2014 she was launched, and am now completing the interior, electrics, bunks, etc. I put the sails on her for the first time, today, and am now itching to get going/flying again! These babies will do wind speed on a reach, up to 30 kts. I covered the last two miles of a race once with the previous B24 @ 30 kts SOG ! Wow ! Doug

Just an update for everyone. We now market and sell the Buccaneer 24′ Trimaran plans that Patrick used to sell to keep her alive, we took over from OS7 last year on Boatdesign.net you can find us under Outside the box or the plans are available on the plans page of our website. We are also finalising a modernisation of the Buccaneer 24′ Trimaran and these details are on the website also. We purchased a Buccaneer 24′ Trimaran to use as a test bed for our many design ideas. When finished the design will be a foil assisted 8.5mtr Buccaneer inspired performance Trimaran. Regards Brooke Johnston Office Manager Ezifold Yachts Ltd Christchurch New Zealand [email protected]

I’m looking for a set of Buc 24 plans since ezifold yachts is no longer in business. Roman P.

The B24 that is mentioned in this article named “TOY” is currently for sale on Toronto Kijiji. for $9,800 in case someone is interested. It’s not my boat (I own a Farrier F36/39 that we’re sailed to New Zealand and I don’t even know the owner) I hope someone here will buy the boat since she sounds like a special one. I notice that there seems to be no cabin on here and just an open cuddy, so she must be much lighter than other ones

Broker's Comments

I know this boat well. The previous owner used to be a regular participant in the Gibraltar - Morocco Yacht Rally. At different times he won prizes for first single handed boat in and smallest boat in the rally. She is a lively well found boat.

The boat has a complete new wardrobe of sail in 2014. She as also equipped in standard B AIS to make her diminutive self visible in the busy shipping lanes of the Straits of Gibraltar.

She is an ideal low cost starter boat for a young couple. She will fit very nicely in the new small boats marina at just under 8m in length.

These boat details are subject to contract. Note: Offers on the asking price may be considered.
