Alberto Galassi, interview with CEO of Ferretti Group
Driving force of re-establishing Ferretti Group into the leading world yacht builder is a manager Alberto Galassi who has a ‘nose’ for both business and luxury. In short time he has redesigned the company which is developing new products at a high pace with some of the jewels like new Riva 88 Folgore just being launched
As a journalist covering yachting industry, I have always found it interesting to attend Ferretti Group press conferences because there we have chance to meet Mr. Alberto Galassi, CEO of Ferretti Group, with recognizable straight forward way of communication and ability to discuss any question about the company, which has passed ‘ups and downs’ in the past ten years. The openness of Mr. Alberto Galassi comes from big experience in business, both yachting and premium brands industry in which he covered different roles, like the ones in private aviation or Premier League football team, at the same time being very close to Ferrari.
Alberto Galassi is like a jet fighter pilot
From our perspective, the reason why he plays this business well is simple – because he doesn’t only run it, but lives it as well. More than once, Alberto Galassi compared himself with a jet fighter pilot, considering the quickness of important decisions he has to make in short period of time. Therefore, it has been a real pleasure to catch him for a moment at the end of June to discuss the current situation of the Ferretti shipyards but also some nice perspectives for the future.
What is ‘current normal’ for Ferretti Group at this moment? Currently, all our shipyards are fully operational, working hard to meet all the orders we have in our order book, which did not see any defection. We had a fantastic month (June) but we need to compensate three months of work we have lost. We carried out concrete actions to protect all our people (lastly, we carried out a private serological test to all our employees). Ferretti Group has been the first company in Italy to have signed an agreement with local unions to define a clear safety protocol to guarantee worker protection. We have just launched the first Riva model of 2020, the new Riva 88 Folgore , produced in the La Spezia’s shipyard.
In the recent interview you mentioned ‘you are selling boats’. Is there any change to whom do you sell today compared to period before Covid crisis? We did not experience any significant difference regarding our clientele, but we saw big shift in attitude, and willingness to have yachts immediately. People simply don’t want to wait for deliveries, they perceive yachts as a ‘floating private island’ and they take the opportunity to go on the sea alone. They realize that life is short and dangerous. We don’t sell boats, we sell experience, the nice way of enjoying life and we offer them what they want. There is simply no better way to do that than to enjoy the sea privately with those we love. Our yachts are among the most beautiful and intimate places to take refuge, to be with your family in a very safe environment. With short time customers who we don’t know when they approach us become good friends in this way.
‘I like football, cars, boats, watches, all the pretty things, and I have special relation with art, contemporary in the first place’
You know UHNW market very well? I would describe this world as a private luxury, and I know it because I live it and share with our customers what I like, pretty places, good chefs, beautiful locations etc. Our clients like that and become part of the family, and we can direct and follow them in living their dream, and I want to clearly say – we never leave our clients alone, as we respect their trust.
Can you describe your further private interests a bit, you are big fan of art as well? I like football, cars, boats, watches, all the pretty things, and I have special relation with art, contemporary art in the first place. I like Italian artists like Mimmo Palladino, Marco Scutaro, Botero and many other, and all of my yachts have art on board as I am really fond of it as it is my passion.
When selecting people I put attention to motivation, honesty, willingness to fight, passion… Young people have all these qualities but lack the experience which is important as well, but I favor young
Do you see any difference between yachting and aero and automotive sectors? The synergy among these three sectors is in the name of innovation and design. Especially within the highly innovative nautical and automotive worlds, it is possible to find unexpected alliances. An example that I can give you is that our yachts reimagine and combine stylistic elements from automotive design frequently with the addition of in-depth research aimed at enhancing the shapes and volumes. It is not easy to transfer knowledge from one world to another. For example, certain aspects in terms of the high quality of components in the automotive world are very well developed: the automotive world is so much more advanced and there is a lot to learn.
However, let’s not forget that building a boat is considerably different to large-scale automotive production. It is very much a mix of craftsmanship and industry. The automotive industry represents organization, efficiency and quality, whilst the nautical industry brings style, refinement and can truly extract the elegance of the materials used. Both sectors are strongly oriented towards innovation. Another common aspect that links the nautical, automotive and aeronautical sectors is ergonomics, the cutting-age technology and the use of some materials such as carbon fiber. Carbon fiber, which has its roots in aeronautics, was subsequently used in the automotive industry before being used by us.
Important lessons from car industry
You often quote Ferrari’s business moves, apart innovation and design what else can the world of automotive bring to yachting? The yachting industry has learned important lessons from car industry: first of all, rapidity in terms of providing technological advances, because it is necessary to anticipate what will be cutting-edge technology in three, four or even five years, as we’re moving towards a ‘streaming future’, that needs to be incorporated in the design of a yacht.
For instance, the new Pershing 7X adds an important aesthetic innovation in the exteriors, which include the impressive side wings: on the two exterior bulwarks, precisely at the point where the wings sit, the air vents are contained in two openings in the body of the hull which widen into two side muscles, sporty features strongly reminiscent of the style of racing cars. In addition, the exterior design philosophy of the new the Riva 88 Folgore, just launched, displays lines and elements inspired by the automotive world, combining luxury and sportiness, matching innovative materials, like carbon, with traditional stylistic elements, such as mahogany inlays and steel decorations.
You pushed young managers into fire and brought back good results for Ferretti Group, what is important for you when you delegate important roles? That is true: we are a Group and the strength of a group comes out best when everyone is involved and share the responsibilities of the results. This revolves around two main pillars: trust and experience. Ferretti Group’s management have proven capabilities and have shown reliability over time, earning my blind trust. When selecting people I put attention to motivation, honesty, willingness to fight, passion… Young people have all these qualities but lack the experience which is important as well, but I favor young.
We have very demanding lifestyle, living in a plane whole year round and our managers need to have a lot of patience, be precise of what they do and have to be less emotional, in a way they need to have ‘super powers’. A professionally managed company, capable of leaving the top management free to carry out planning and decision-making work in order to expand the business, has been my top priority since the day I took over Ferretti Group. The way in which we were able to turn around this company and the results attained in this 5-year span proved this is the right path to push my team to success.
Mennyacht represents us in the region for more than 25 years as one of Ferretti’s precious partners and the new venture with Ikador comes like jewel in the crown of our relation
The new ways of mobility, primarily electric are very accepted in automotive, but not in yachting? We are extremely committed to do what is in our possibilities to improve the environmental impact of our industry: besides being compliant with the regulation, the efforts of our technical office engineering teams are all striving to develop environmentally friendly solutions to meet yacht owners’ increasing expectations about ecological safeguards. I see yachts with two energy and power requests, we can call it hotel and propulsion. The hotel means all the services you use while anchored, like air condition, fridges and every other device you use. Propulsion obviously means the power you need to move boat around. My opinion is that we are able to cover the need of the hotel power but not propulsion, because the technology is still not there, and therefore we need to look at the hybrid solutions, not full electric.
Big Wally Yacht is coming
What is your next big move, please give us a glimpse? As far as our brands are concerned, our focus at the moment is to develop the potential offered by the acquisition of the Wally brand. Wally is an icon of sailing and motoring, an extraordinary brand that is synergistic with the other Ferretti Group brands. I can say that in the near future we will see the launch of the new and big Wally yacht. For sure this yacht will be joined by new Riva 130 and Ferretti Yachts 1000 , this is what I can say for now.
Can you comment about your regional dealer Mennyacht, and especially new venture for Riva in hotel Ikador? Mennyacht represents us in the region for more than 25 years as one of Ferretti’s precious partners and the new venture comes like jewel in the crown of our relation. Croatia is a very special place, not only for the stunning landscape and crystal-clear water, but also thanks to the partnership of Riva with the Ikador Luxury Boutique Hotel & Spa in Opatija. This renowned Croatian seaside resort hosts an exclusive Riva Lounge and Privée that, as well as other Riva Destinations around the world like Venice, Formentera, Paris and Monaco, epitomizes the most authentic Riva Brand Experience.
Actually, it took us by surprise when this idea came to my table and I am very proud of what has been done as this is fantastic development. In addition to the Lounge and the Privée, a magnificent Aquariva Super is available to explore the beautiful coastline in North of Croatia, and I must admit that I have never visited that part. I love Croatia and have been to Dubrovnik , Mljet and Korčula , but I have never visited Split and more northern part for which I have heard it is very nice. Unfortunately, I will not have time to visit it this summer as I have to work to compensate three months of Covid we mentioned on the beginning, as I explained that I have to live like ‘jet fighter pilot’.

Shipyard Stories: Inside the Renaissance of Ferretti Group
Written By: Rachel Ingram
Alberto Galassi has a monumental mission on his hands. As CEO of Ferretti Group, the Italian bears the responsibility of not one, but seven, iconic boat brands: Ferretti Yachts, Riva, Pershing, Itama, CRN and Custom Line and Wally.
Credited with leading the renaissance of the group, Galassi has spent the last decade helping the company to re-establish its place on the yachting map while “building some of the most stylish yachts ever made and throwing the best parties”. The secrets to their success? People, passion and Italian power.
Ferretti was established in 1968 by brothers Alessandro and Norberto Ferretti who cut their teeth as agents for American firm Christ Craft. In 1971, the duo launched their primary vessel, a 10 metre wooden motor sailor, followed by their first of many motor yachts ten years later. They became known for their innovative approach to engineering, and in 1989 established a specialist research centre to further enhance their vessels. By the early nineties Ferretti was shipping boats to clients around the world. At the same time, it was winning trophies at both the offshore racing championships, furthering showcasing its engineering prowess on the global stage.
In the late nineties, Ferretti launched an acquisition campaign to bring together selected leading boatbuilders under the umbrella of a ‘group’. Starting with Custom Line in 1996, the business went onto acquire Pershing (1998), CRN (1999), Riva (2000) and Itama (2004). In 2012, Galassi became CEO and led the next phase of development, investing heavily into research and innovation, as well as processes and infrastructure. The group, headquartered in Forli, now has six shipyards across Italy and a portfolio which also includes recently acquired Monaco-based Wally, which joined the Ferretti family in 2019. “Wally is the pioneer leading the path for the future,” says Galassi. “For anything new, different and ahead of its time, that’s where Wally comes in."
With Wally completing the group, Ferretti’s focus rest firmly on maintaining the legacy of its existing brands while modernising them in line with present day demands and innovations. This, Galassi admits, is the most complex part of his job. “You have to respect the brand and touch it with a soft hand because you cannot make a 180-degree turn after years of tradition and heritage. The complicated thing is to keep evolving while maintaining the iconic symbols, materials or performances of each brand.”
Riva is perhaps Ferretti’s most recognisable brand – or the “jewel in the crown”, according to Galassi, who has adored the brand since his father bought a Riva in 1974. “You cannot betray the origin and the heritage of Riva. You have to evolve to keep the tradition of the material and the elegance and keep the very sexy style,” he says. “At the same time, Wally has to remain super performing and disruptive, and Pershing must always be a jet fighter. You can't ignore the fact that they are the closest thing to flying with a jet on the sea is to be on the Pershing at 50 knots.”
Bringing seven brands together under one umbrella while maintaining their individuality was another challenge, Galassi admits. His strategy was to recruit dedicated teams for brand. “If you mix them, you're going to have a disaster,” he says. “There's no overlapping but, at the same time, by having the power of the group behind you, you have an industrial advantage in terms of purchasing and developing. How else can you make 50 models in five years?”
While each of Ferretti Group’s brands come with historical prestige, Galassi says it’s the people behind them that make them the success they are today. “I'm just the director of an orchestra made up of fantastic players,” he says. “There’s a team of dedicated, committed, hungry, focused, happy and aligned people that make the essence of Ferretti Group. All of the women and men in management positions are entrepreneurs in themselves. They manage their area like it it's their own company. One of the best things I did was hire a lot of young people and give them the freedom to make mistakes.”
Since its early days, Ferretti has been a face of Italian beauty and craftsmanship, working with Italian people, artisans and designers wherever possible. “My friend Domenico Dolce, the founder of Dolce & Gabbana, always tells me: “Alberto, condannati all bellezza: we are condemned to beauty,” Galassi says. “As Italians, it's in our DNA. We grew up being surrounded by beauty for generations. From the artisans to the supplier, to the furniture company, to the fabric company, there’s something more – either you have it, or you don't. We’re Italians, we’re not perfect, but I think we’re beautiful.”
This Italian style will remain a foundation of the group as it continues to push the limits of engineering and invest in its future, which includes an increased focus on sustainability – including further investment into carbon fibre and hybrid technology – and continued expansion into security vessels – it’s aim is to become a major provider for Navy, coastguard, police and security forces worldwide. Galassi also wishes to launch a ‘services’ offering.
“I would like to enter what they call ‘the software around the hardware’ and provide services to the owners, like chartering, brokering and mooring. I believe that if you can provide to the owner the perfect package of boat plus services, you will be the number one.” He believes this will disrupt the market and be of value to his clients, who repeatedly tell him that the preciousness of time has been an important learning gained from the pandemic.
Italy was hit hard by the Covid-19 crisis in 2020, but Galassi reacted quickly to introduce health and safety measures and guide the group through the crisis, leading it to flourish rather than flounder in the face of uncertainty. The figures are evidence enough of its perseverance. Between 2019 and 2021, the group presented 23 new series and semi-custom models, and in the first six months of 2021, Ferretti Group revealed revenues of €457 million – 75% of 2020’s entire turnover.
“At the end of the day, a boat is freedom,” Galassi explains as he unveils five world premieres at Cannes Yachting Festival, including the Riva 68’ Diable, Riva 76’ Perseo Super, Pershing 6X, Wally WHY200 and Ferretti Yachts 1000. “It’s your private island.”

Ferretti Group profits surge in H1 2024
The first half of the year has brought record-breaking profits for the italian shipbuilder, but does a decline in orders signal a cooling in demand.
Ferretti Group has reported record-breaking profits for the first half of 2024, as the Italian shipyards achieved a net profit of €44 million, a 7.6 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2023. Notably, the growth was primarily by the shipbuilder’s superyacht segment. However, a decline in new order intake could point to a softening in demand.
“One year after the success of the double listing on the Hong Kong and Milan stock exchanges, Ferretti Group confirms its growth,” says Alberto Galassi, CEO, Ferretti Group.
“Margins reached 15.8 per cent, the best result ever for the Group’s profitability, together with a net financial position of €237 million, improved by more than €30 million compared to last spring. The second quarter of 2024 also shows signs of long-term growth, including the consistent recovery in demand from the North American market.”
Ferretti’s adjusted EBITDA reached €96.7 million in the first half of 2024, marking a 15.9 per cent increase from the previous year. This led to the record EBITDA margin of 15.8 per cent, an increase of 110 basis points (1.1 per cent) from H1 2023.
The Group’s net revenue from new build yachts also rose by 7.7 per cent to €611.0 million, up from €567.4 million in H1 2023. Europe now accounts for 51.2 per cent of Ferretti’s total new build revenue and generated €313.0 million in sales– an increase of 17.9 per cent from the previous year. The Middle East and Africa (MEA) region also saw substantial growth, with revenues rising by 27.5 per cent to €112.8 million, comprising 18.5 per cent of the Group’s total revenue.
In the Americas, revenue grew by 3.5 per cent to €161.3 million, making up 26.4 per cent of total new yacht revenue. The North American market showed signs of a strong recovery in the second quarter, with demand increasing by over 28 per cent. In contrast, the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region experienced a steep decline, with revenues plummeting by 58.4 per cent to just €23.9 million.
In terms of new orders, the superyachts segment saw the most dramatic growth, with orders surging by 84.2 per cent to €96.5 million. However, despite these revenue gains, Ferretti faced some challenges in maintaining its order intake in other areas, with orders for H1 2024 being €514.4 million, a 10.4 per cent decline compared to €573.8 million in H1 2023.
This decrease was particularly pronounced in the composite yachts segment, where orders fell by 38.5 per cent to €161.6 million. This segment, which accounted for 45.8 per cent of total order intake in H1 2023, now represents just 31.4 per cent, perhaps marking a shift in market demand. The ‘Made-to-Measure’ yachts segment, however, showed resilience, with orders increasing by 6.4 per cent to €256.3 million, accounting for 49.8 per cent of total order intake.
The shipyard’s entire order backlog as of 30 June 2024 stands at €1.5 billion, a 6.0 per cent increase from the previous year. This growth in backlog was also driven by the strong performance in the superyachts segment, which saw its entire backlog grow by 18.0 per cent to €521.9 million.
However, the net backlog (total orders not yet delivered minus revenues already booked) decreased by 5.2 per cent from March 2024 and 3.0 per cent year-on-year to €785.7 million, potentially signalling a cooling in demand. And while the financial results for H1 2024 are ultimately positive, several indicators point to potential headwinds that could challenge Ferretti moving forward.
The overall order intake decline of 10.4 per cent suggests a softening in demand, particularly in the composite yachts segment. Regional disparities in order intake are concerning too – Europe, Ferretti’s strongest market, saw a significant 39.1 per cent decline in new orders. The dramatic drop in the APAC region’s order intake (down 85.3 per cent) is also troubling, although both of these are contrasted sharply with the MEA region, however, which grew by 60.9 per cent, and the Americas, which increased by 28.1 per cent.
Ferretti is also facing rising costs in several areas, which could impact its margins. The amount the shipyard spent on raw materials and consumables increased by €17.2 million compared to H1 2023 – most likely attributable to inflationary pressures. External contractors’ costs also rose by €28.9 million.
Despite these challenges, Galassi maintains that Ferretti will continue to invest heavily in its future growth. The Group recently expanded its production capacity by acquiring additional land adjacent to its San Vitale shipyard, bringing the total production area in Ravenna to around 100,000 sqm. This expansion is expected to support increased production in the made-to-measure, composite and sail segments under the Ferretti Yachts and Wally brands.

On June 21, Ferretti started taking stock orders from investors in anticipation of the listing. The company, which is controlled by Chinese conglomerate Weichai Group, sold 97 million existing shares, or about 28.7 percent of its share capital, to investors.
Ferretti completed its initial public offering (IPO) in Hong Kong just over a year ago. In 2018, it attempted a similar IPO on the Milan exchange but had to scuttle it due to a lack of investor appetite.
The dual listing is expected to provide growth capital moving forward as Ferretti continues to pursue an ambitious growth agenda that started shortly after Galassi became CEO in 2014. Its new launches were particularly strong during the pandemic: Ferretti grew the number of models across its different brands to 54 last year, up from 42 in 2021.
Recent launches include the Custom Line Navetta 38, Pershing GTX116, Ferretti Yachts 580 , wallypower58X, and Wallywhy150 . It also presented the first model of its new InFYnito range, the InFYnito 90, last January.
In May, the company reported an order backlog of $1.64 billion (1.5 billion euros), with an order intake of $337 million (or 307.5 million euros) for the first three months of the year. Ferretti said yacht orders rose 15.4 percent for its first quarter compared to the same period a year earlier, mostly on international orders.

Our history
Still dreaming after more than 180 years.
The Ferretti Group is among the world leaders in the luxury yacht industry and works in the design, construction and sale of yachts and pleasure boats.
The Ferretti Group is synonymous with luxury, innovation, passion and excellence. It boasts a portfolio of unique brands that were well established long before joining the Group, including Riva, famous for its Italian craftsmanship and design for more than 180 years. Today, Ferretti Group still maintains strong ties to Italy's centuries-old yachting tradition, and is well-known for its distinctive Italian style and design, along with production centres that are on the industrial cutting edge.
The beginnings
1968-94 Ferretti was established in 1968 when the Ferretti brothers became agents for the American firm Chris Craft and began marketing their motor boats: Ferretti Nautica was born.
In 1971 , the company built its first 10-metre wooden ‘motor sailer’, i.e. a boat with both a sail and an engine. In 1982 , Ferretti launched its first motor yacht, propelled exclusively by engine power, and began building open, flybridge and sport-fisherman vessels. In 1989 , a drive towards improved synergies in advanced technology led to the establishment of the Engineering Department, a specialist research centre tasked with researching new materials and designing new standard-series boats.
Ferretti's debut in the offshore-racing arena soon followed. The newly expanded range and the sporting successes paved the way for the group’s internationalisation. Accordingly, Ferretti of America Inc. was founded in 1993 to sell motor yachts in the USA, Canada, Mexico, Venezuela and the Caribbean. Ferretti of America joined an existing network operating in Greece, France, Spain, Germany and Great Britain, helping to boost sales on the international market. Between 1994 and 1997 , the Ferretti team's victories at the European Championship and the Class 1 World Offshore Championship (twice) enabled the company to transfer the results of the technological research originally intended for sporting competitions to the production line.

Acquisitions
1999-2012 In 1994, Ferretti launched a global sales campaign by creating a strategic dealer network outside Europe.
In the late 1990s , as institutional investors acquired a share of the capital, the company looked to an external-expansion strategy through targeted acquisitions of boat builders specialising in top-of-the-range motor yachts. In 1996 , with the arrival of Custom Line, Ferretti began operating in the flybridge segment with 28- to 40-metre fibreglass yachts. In 1998 , CNA Srl (Cantieri Navali dell'Adriatico) joined the group, bringing the prestigious Pershing brand – specialist open motor yachts combining high performance with supreme comfort and design excellence. In 1999 , the group acquired CRN SpA, a specialist builder of 30-metre-plus maxi and mega-yachts in composite materials, with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure.
In 2000 , Ferretti acquired 100% of the share capital of Riva SpA, the world’s most famous and exclusive shipyard. In May 2001 , the parent company Ferretti SpA bought various assets from Oram shipyards of La Spezia, where Riva would set up its new production facilities. In November that year, Ferretti Group finalized its acquisition of Mochi Craft Srl, based in Pesaro. In 2002 , the group took over Diesse Arredamenti, bringing in new skills in the nautical fittings and furnishings sector to enhance its consolidated boat-building know-how. In line with this strategy, in 2002 the group also finalized its acquisitions of Cantiere Navale Mario Morini of Ancona (enabling CRN to expand its production capacity), Pinmar SL, a specialist yacht painter & refitter, and Zago SpA, a high-profile Italian manufacturer of wooden furniture pieces. In 2004 , the group acquired Cantieri Navali Itama, a prestigious company specialising in the construction of open motor yachts. In 2008 , Ferretti Group acquired the assets, brands and operations of Allied Marine, an American firm specialising in brokerage, after-sales services, and the sale of new and second-hand motor yachts.

Buoyant growth
2012-Today 2012 saw a change in the ownership structure of Ferretti Group. Weichai Group ("SHIG - Weichai Group"), one of the largest international industrial groups in the commercial vehicles and construction machinery sector, acquired a 75% holding.
Alberto Galassi, Ferretti Group CEO, led the new management team towards new objectives. The focus was on research & development and product innovation while taking the group’s yachts into new markets, as ambassadors of Italian technology and style. This was a time of major investment in products, processes, communication and events. Ferretti Group grew at an astonishing rate, performing well above the industry average.
February 2016 saw the establishment of FSD (Ferretti Security Division). The division specializes in the design, development and production of a new range of state-of-the-art naval platforms with state of the art specifications and mission profiles tailored to the requirements for the security, patrol, search & rescue in international and territorial waters and coastlines. The first Fast Patrol Vessel by Ferretti Security Division, the FSD195, is a high-performance 20-metre vessel capable of speeds in excess of 55 knots, with a range of over 500 miles and both RINA FPV and CE approvals. The results so far have satisfied shareholders to such an extent that Ferretti Group has been listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange since 2022. Ferretti Group acquires a majority stake in two supply chain companies: Massello Srl and Fratelli Canalicchio SpA. In 2023, Ferretti Group made its debut on Euronext Milan , the Milan-based stock exchange operated by Borsa Italiana, the first and only Group in the world to achieve this double listing in Asia and in Europe.
