Palmer Johnson

The Palmer Johnson yard, located in Sturgeon Bay, WI, has a long a illustrious history of building mostly large custom yachts. Founded by Hans Johnson and Herman Gmack, it was originally known as Sturgeon Bay Boat Works when Hans Johnson’s son, Palmer, assumed ownership. During World War II, the company turned it’s efforts toward building boats for the military. It wasn’t until Palmer Johnson retired in 1959, when some local business men assumed ownership, that the firm acquired it’s present name. In 1961, long time Palmer Johnson customer and Texas Instruments CEO, Pat Haggarty, bought the company. An avid yacht racer, he did much to establish the builders reputation in the international racing circuit. It was in the establishment of a separate brokerage division, that the company sold a number of different production fiberglass sailboat models under the Palmer Johnson name. Palmer Johnson never really built fiberglass boats (though it did finish a great number), deciding that it’s future lay with custom aluminum yachts. For a time it contracted with a number of builders, mostly in Europe, that were sold under the Palmer Johnson name. Palmer Johnson production sailboats were only sold for a few years. Nautor of Finland, the builder of the larger PJ models, ultimately decided to sell it’s yachts exclusively under it’s own Swan brand. Today, Palmer Johnson continues as a world renowned builder of large, custom, power and sailing yachts.

The Optimist Dinghy is one of the most popular boats in the world. It is geared towards beginning through intermediate sailors ages 8 to 15.

The 13 foot Flying Junior (FJ) is geared to teen beginners and students who have mastered the Opti.

The Club 420 is a higher performance 14 foot sailboat geared towards advanced sailors and those wishing to race.

The 19 foot Flying Scot is a stable yet responsive centerboard boat ideal for a crew of 3-5 adults.

For over 70 years, SBYC has backed and support the 501c3 organization, the Sturgeon Bay Yacht Club Sail Training Foundation, Inc. (STF). STF offers adults and kids alike affordable instruction to the public. Membership at SBYC is not required.  Thousands of local residents and visitors alike, have mastered the sailing skills and learned the fundamentals of water safety and racing protocols. Sailing teaches students independence and confidence, the meaning of sportsmanship, and offer the opportunity to learn a skill for life.

Embark on a maritime adventure with our Summer Sailing Class, where students age 8 to 80 set sail. Our program, located at the Sturgeon Bay Yacht Club, strongly emphasizes water safety, teaching every sailor to navigate securely on and off the water. This focus on safety complements their sailing skills, ensuring a lifetime of enjoyable and safe boating experiences. Guided by our passionate, US Sailing-certified instructors, each sailor embarks on a journey of discovery and excitement. From rigging their first boat to setting sail towards local landmarks and perhaps even catching the thrill of competitive racing.

At STF, we nurture both individual talent and teamwork. Students not only master the independence of solo sailing but also thrive in the camaraderie and collective learning with their peers. This balance fosters confidence, enhances decision-making skills, and creates lasting memories and friendships. Join us for a summer of gentle waves and gusts of joy, where every day is an opportunity to explore, learn, and fall in love with being on the water. Our sailors don't just learn to sail; they embark on a safe, responsible boating journey and lifelong maritime adventures. I didn't know there were that many of them around. The Hudson River used to have them - maybe still do. It would be a good thing if their stocks are growing.  

Sturgeon are still around but the population is extremely depleted. One lake in northern Michigan has a strictly limited winter fishing date. I think the limit is about 8 fish total in any year. The local Odawa tribe has been involved in a restocking project for a few years in an effort th increase the population.

I've had flying fish jump aboard; one smacked a doctor right in the center of his chest while the doctor was standing watch practicing his harmonica. Even fish are music critics. I understand the Erie canal has a decent population of sturgeon. I've never seen one. They look like something drawn on a chart from the Ottoman Empire. -Will

We have 3 or 4 different kinds of sturgeon in Lake Pontchartrain. Some natural lake water (brackish) ones and from the Mississippi River floodgates, and some from the Gulf. I have seen a few while sailing and bumped one one day. I thought I'd hit a log; it looked to be about 6 feet long as it casually swam away. Big fellas!

It is said that under the Bluewater bridge (Sarnia Ontario to Port Huron Michigan) there is the largest Sturgeon population in the Great Lakes
